By Pamela A. Keene All the recent afternoon popup showers and even some torrential downpours seem to have had little to no effect on the water levels at Lake Lanier. But there’s a reason – in fact several – for that. “A number of factors contribute to how much the lake levels will rise,” said policy director, Chris Manganiello, water policy director for the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. “From the amount and location of the rainfall to the daytime temperatures and evaporation, these are just a couple of the reasons that the lake levels don’t come up just because it’s been raining.” James Hathorn, chief of water management for the Mobile District, concurs. He explained that there’s not really a direct correlation between the amount of rainfall and a specific increase in lake levels. “Several factors such as plant growth and the seasonal rainfall patterns contribute to the volume of runoff,” Hathorn said. “The highest run-off occurs in early spring (April) and lowest late summer (July-September). During extreme droughts, runoff from a 1-inch rainfall event can be less than 10 percent.”

Here are other contributing factors, according to the Corps: • The distribution of the rainfall – the greater the extent of the rainfall above the dam the more volume of water available to flow into the reservoir. • The soil state prior to the rainfall – the wetter the soil the more water available to convert to runoff and flow into the reservoir. The time of year, the amount (or percentage) of the rainfall that actually contributes to streamflow varies on a seasonal basis. • The amount of water being released from the dam – i.e., if the amount of water released from the dam is less than what is flowing in, the reservoir will rise.” Manganiello also cited the severe drought of 2016. “White, Lumpkin and Habersham counties were in extreme drought last year and they’re where the majority of Lanier’s watershed is located. Starting in May 2016 through the fall and into the spring of 2017, the rainfall was dramatically below normal, affecting the flow of both the Chattahoochee and Chestatee rivers, the lake’s main tributaries.” The Riverkeeper spokesperson also said that transpiration, the

process of plants absorbing water to live and grow, is a factor. “Plants’ and trees’ need for water affects how much run off makes it to the lake,” Manganiello said. “But also with the number of days we’ve been having with temperatures greater than 90 degrees, the more rapidly the water evaporates from the lake’s surface.” The Corps does a balancing act between all the parts of the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint River Basin, from providing the minimum water flow amounts at certain points along the system from Lake Lanier to the Gulf of Mexico as required by law. Currently, Buford and much of the area surround Lanier is now

under Level 3 drought restrictions. this means that: • General outdoor watering is not permitted, including watering plants and trees, washing cars or running fountains, reflecting pools and waterfalls. • Irrigation of food gardens is permitted between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. only. • Using water to clean hard surfaces, such as driveways and parking, is not allowed except under specific guidelines for commercial use. Georgia reply to water lawsuit was expected late last month He stated that the Peach State allowed nearly unrestricted irrigation on Georgia farms and that metro Atlanta was slow to set restrictions when drought threatened in 2012. In its May 31 exception to Lancaster’s report, Florida claimed that denial of the special master’s ruling is the last remaining legal remedy to save the Apalachicola region from devastation. The legal team claimed that Lancaster erred in concluding that uncertainties in Corps’ operations prevented him from apportioning water from Georgia to Florida. Attorneys pointed to a Corps’ document that stated the Corps would consider adjustments to its water release operations pending a Supreme Court decision. Georgia attorneys expected to refute Florida’s claims and defend Lancaster’s recommendations. Florida has until Aug. 31 to counter Georgia’s reply. Justices are expected to consider the case in its October 2017 term, which runs through September 2018. The Court’s rulings historically concur with special masters’ recommendations, but occasionally render exceptions based on states’ arguments. Each state has tallied upward of $40 million in the legal battle.

By Jane Harrison Georgia’s legal team was expected to counter Florida’s plea for U.S. justices to scuttle a court appointee’s recommendations about water allocation in the two states. Georgia attorneys had until July 31 to respond to Florida’s request to decline a Special Master report issued after more than three years of legal wrangling. Florida initiated the federal lawsuit in Oct. 2013, accusing Georgia of hoarding water on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system and thus drying out oyster fisheries in Apalachicola Bay. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on the river system that stretches from the North Georgia mountains to the Gulf of Mexico. Special Master Ralph Lancaster denied Florida’s claims that limiting Georgia’s water consumption would fix water woes downstream. His report, filed Feb. 14, indicated that Florida erred in not targeting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which controls the release of water from five dams on the rivers. Georgia officials hailed Lancaster’s recommendation for the court to deny Florida’s claims; however his report did not leave Georgia blameless.

Set the lead core line at seven to eight colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 mph with a one ounce jig. Tip your jig with a white or chartreuse chad body or Blueback Herring. We have had a number of questions concerning the rational for the type, length and size of leaders. The following are some considerations and the rational we use. The objective is to select a

line that will maximize the number of bites and is strong enough to land, with a little luck, the lake record (48 pounds). The considerations are the type, length and weight of the line. Do not skimp on the type of line. Use high quality fluorocarbon line for both main line and leader. We recommend using 20 pound test fluorocarbon main line. The smaller the leader line size the less weight the bait will have to carry, resulting in a more active bait fish. Stripers love to chase their bait and the lighter the line the better. Because Lake Lanier has a lot of trees at 30 feet below full pool you have to select a line that allows you to “manage” a hard fighting Striper without getting hung up in the trees. We recommend using a 6 to 8 foot fluorocarbon leader from 12 to 17 pound test. We use a 12 pound test leader in the summer months for our down rods. Typically, we are fishing deep with very little boat movement. As a result, the bait fish must do all the moving and the lighter the line the more active the bait. The 12 pound test strikes the proper balance of bait activity and fish

management when we are fishing down rods with very little boat movement. We tested 12 versus 10 pound test line last year and concluded the lighter 10 pound test line broke off, pulled the hook and got into trees considerably more than 12 pound test without any increase in the number of bites. As a result of our tests we do not recommend leader line strength less than 12 pound test. In the fall and spring we troll from .8 to 1.5 mph. For the most part we are towing the bait fish and can use a heaver line. We use 15 pound test leaders for both free lines and down rods in fall, winter and spring. We use 17 pound test leader when fishing Herring in rivers with current. We use Seaguar fluorocarbon line. Making movies a natural for two Lanier youth By Pamela A. Keene Elijah Marcano and his younger brother Liam Peeples take being in the movies in stride. Elijah, 20, had a two-episode arc in Season 5 of “The Walking Dead,” filmed in Senoia and 10year-old Liam’s film, “Champion” was released in mid-May. If they continue on their current paths, both will likely become household names in Hollywood. Liam – short for William – and his parents Will and Theresa Peeples live on Lake Lanier in Flowery Branch. Elijah just completed his second year at Kennesaw State University where he represented the school as mascot Scrappy the Owl. Liam attends a private Christian school in Hall County. In “Champion,” Liam plays the brother of the film’s main character. “Both of them are represented by Atlanta Models and Talent, and Elijah also has an agent in Los Angeles, so he’ll be moving there to continue college,” Theresa said. “We are so proud of both of them.” Both Elijah and Liam have worked in print, television, film and commercials. Among Elijah’s

recent roles, he was a guest star on “Chicago PD,” played Corey Feldman in an upcoming bio-pic about Feldman, and stage roles, including “Split in Three” at the Aurora Theater in Lawrenceville this past May. “Elijah was not very athletic as a youngster and he was kind of on the small side, so he was more interested in drama,” Theresa explained. “In 6th grade he auditioned for a role in his class production of “Romeo and Juliet,” and ended up playing a

very short Romeo to a much taller Juliet. He stole the show.” Theresa said that Liam really got into acting as a coincidence. “Elijah had some auditions with his agent at Atlanta Models and Talent and I had taken Liam with me. He was only 6 but he just sat quietly in the waiting room,” she said. “The talent agent asked who the well-behaved boy in the waiting room was and asked if he had an agent. See, they’re used to actors at that age often being ﬁdgety, playing with video games,

“He played an abused teen that was suspected of murder but in the end helped the police ﬁnd the real killer,” she said. “They must have ﬁlmed each scene a dozen or so times, several takes from different angles, and all the time, Elijah had to be crying (in the scene). Afterward he told me he had an awful headache from having to crying so much. But that’s what acting is about.”

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Lynch hired as Lake Lanier Olympic Park manager By Jane Harrison An experienced local promoter with the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce began management of Lake Lanier Olympic Park last month. Robin Lynch, who developed fundraising, membership and wellness initiatives for the chamber, started work at LLOP July 1, said Mimi Collins, Gainesville Hall ’96 chairperson. “She has great fundraising experience, organizational skills, event planning and people skills

and her experience working at the chamber transitions well” to the park job, Collins said. Between 11 and 15 applicants sought the position after Morgan House announced his resignation in May. House stayed on the job through July 15 to help train his replacement, Collins said. He will stay involved during preparations for the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships in Sept. 2018. The park’s governing body also approved hiring James Wat-

son as full time assistant venue manager. Watson previously worked part time assisting House. Collins said Lynch spent her first weeks on the job meeting with LLOP stakeholders and canoe/kayak and rowing club members. She does not have experience in the sports that established the 1996 Olympic venue, Collins said, but is taking time to learn more about them. Lakeside will have an interview with Lynch in next month’s edition.

Scheduled for Saturday, August 19, near Helen in the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area, the event concludes with a picnic lunch at the Upper Chattahoochee Campground next to the river.

The specific location is the Mark Trail Wilderness Area off Forest Road 44 north of Helen. Participants are asked to brownbag their lunch and then stay for optional activities in the afternoon. “Volunteers have the opportunity to either hike up to Horse Trough Falls in the campground or experience free tubing or ziplining at Cool River Tubing after lunch,” Westervelt said.

Summer pastime is only minutes away from Lake Lanier By Jane Harrison suburban diamond just south of Lake Lanier’s shores shines in a family-oriented setting where future stars come to bat. A Gwinnett Braves minor league baseball game at Coolray Field, less than 12 miles from Buford Dam, pitches spectators an entertainment jewel faceted with fun, food, fireworks, bobbleheads, and of course, America’s traditional favorite pastime. At first venture to a G-Braves game, lake-lovers might wonder why they hadn’t discovered this break from the lake years ago. Getting there might be a little hectic, but the tension fades soon enough when the ballpark lights hit the windshield. With the turn out of Gwinnett traffic into the ballpark, the air changes. A crew of courteous parking attendants directs you to the best available slot. Get out of the car and take a deep breath. The scent of baseball – hotdogs, popcorn, peanuts and maybe a little sweat – escorts fans to the entry gate where smiling ticket checkers quickly get folks into an arena where fans anticipate a fun

time watching players try to make it to the big time. The Triple A minor league team that moved to the Lawrenceville field in 2008 is striving to win more fans in a metro area flooded with amusement options, including their parent team barely two counties away. General Manager North Johnson hopes newcomers’ experience at the park will bring them back and help lift the G-Braves out of the minor league attendance cellar. ‘Friendly’ experience “Hopefully the moment you pull into the parking lot till the moment you leave the game, you’ll be greeted by friendly caring people,” from the parking attendants and ticket scanners to the ushers and concession vendors, he told a game newbie before the Phil Niekro Bobblehead & Fireworks night last month. “We have a clean, beautiful nine-year-old facility that looks like it just opened. Great solar eclipse is finally here! I have been waiting for August 2017 for a great many years. Ever since I broadcast the annular eclipse in 1984, I could not wait to see the total solar eclipse that will occur this August 21st. Back then, here in Atlanta, 99.7 percent of the sun’s surface was covered. I remember broadcasting outside the WSB studios in midtown and I watched the street lights come on as skies began to darken some 20 minutes after noon. It was perfect timing as it happened during the noon news. I had a thermometer outside and actually saw the temperature drop five degrees. The city was bathed in an eerie twilight. As I looked at the shadow cast by the leaves of the elm tree near the back patio of WSB, I saw what looked like little crescent moons, hundreds of them cast on the patio. It got as dark as the sky would in a massive thunderstorm. The darkness was over just about as quickly as it began. This was not a TOTAL solar eclipse. It was ANNULAR. The sun was never totally blocked from the sun. I would have to wait until 2017. It seemed like an eternity but here we are. So what can you expect to see? If you stay around the lake or Atlanta, you can expect to see about the same thing we saw back in 1992. About 97 percent of the sun will be obscured by the moon. However, if you head just a little north, you will be in the path of totality. I assure you, it will

be worth the drive. So where should you go? Rabun County in the Glenn northeast Georgia mountains is in the diBurns rect path of totality. It will begin just after 2:30 Lanier p.m. and last about two Outlook and a half minutes. However, you might want to consider another destination. Climatology shows that 70 percent of the time skies are cloudy with storms at that time of day on August 21st. It is possible that we could have clear skies there, but I am not taking that chance. I am going to Charleston where the afternoon seabreeze will scour out the clouds from the coast. You can go on the Sky and Telescope web page and see the exact path. Personally I would not choose the mountains of North Georgia or the mountains of North Carolina. So what is it going to be like in full totality? Nothing short of amazing. IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: You will need your dark safety glasses to look at the approaching and departing eclipse. If you don’t use the glasses the radiation from the sun will literally cook your retinas! The first thing you will see is black sky heading at you from the west. The shadow of the moon will be traveling at you at better that Mach 2! It will first touch Georgia at 2:34 p.m. EDT and will depart the state at 2:40 p.m. EDT. For two minutes and 35 seconds, if you are in the center line, you

Successful Family Poker Run nets funds for charities By Pamela A. Keene With more than 250 boats – local and out-of-towners – this year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run has been called a success by organizers and participants. “I’ve been to all of them since the beginning, but this is the first time I’ve participated in the past three years,” said Buford’s Tod Rawlins, who brought his 15year-old son this year to try their luck. “This was one of the best Poker Runs ever and it was a great fun family event.” Officials said they are on target for the annual fund-raiser that benefits Camp Twin Lakes, Camp Sunshine, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the Edmondson-Telford Center. New events this year included the Friday mid-day raft-up at Pirates Cove, just outside Lanier Islands across from the entrance to Holiday Marina and the Friday night concert at Presentation Point. she said. “We’re still tallying the totals from registration, the silent and live auctions and all the other events of the weekend,” said Sydney Gordon, vice president of Lanier Partners, which produces the event annually. “There were more than 1,100 people at the Friday night concert and captains’ party and we saw a big increase in the number of local boaters and their families that came for the weekend.” Sydney said each of the win-

The victory kept the GBraves at equal wins and losses, trailing International League South leader, Durham Bulls, by six games. With July coming to a close, team manager Johnson hoped for an August rally like the one last year that put them in the league playoffs. If they can’t catch the Bulls, there’re still a couple of chances in wildcard competition. “We never throw in the white towel. In reality, any team’s roster can change dramatically in a day or two,” Johnson said. You never know who’s going to get called up or who might get sent back down from the majors. That’s all part of the challenge and excitement in the minor leagues, especially Triple A, where players mostly in their early 20s aim to fulfill childhood dreams and some who made it to the big league come back to re-

hab after an injury or performance lapse. Players on the brink of goals or in purgatory put it on the line nearly daily from the opener in April to the regular season’s close in early September, each hoping they’ll make it to the show before

New company keeps watchful eye out for homeowners propeties By Pamela A. Keene What do you do when you just can’t get out to the lake to check on your second home? Or what if a weather situation happens while you’re away on vacation? David Bell and his new company Red Ground have the answer. Providing regular inspections for second and vacation homes on Lake Lanier, Bell helps property owners monitor property. “We want to put the vacation back into your vacation home,” Bell said. “Many people own second homes on the lake and they don’t have time to check on their property regularly. And many of clients are seniors who could use an extra hand to keep an eye on things.” Clients contract with Red Ground for regular property inspections and other services. Bell will meet contractors on site to expedite maintenance and repairs, he’ll monitor and move docks to keep up

with lake levels or just come by regularly to check on things. “We often get a call to open up someone’s home or boat for the weekend, stock them with groceries or fill the boat with gas,” he said. “And we’ll even come back after they leave and clean up, cover the boat and make sure everything’s safe and secure.” Bell’s diverse background led him to start Red Ground. In addition to having owned landscape company, worked as a corporate fund-raiser for museums and spent time in the no-profit arena, he rebuilt his home on Berkeley Lake. He also has a network of contractors to compliment his skills for client projects, ranging from electricians to HVAC and plumbing. “My goal is help our clients feel that they’re protecting their investment and have peace of mind,” said. “We want to put the fun back in owning a lake home.”

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, utility man Sean Rodriguez, and pitcher Sean Newcomb rehabbed with the GBraves earlier this season. • What will be the new team name? Voting ended July 24 for a new moniker to create a unique identity for the Gwinnett squad. On the ballot were fan nominees: Gwinnett Buttons, Hushpuppies, Bigmouths, Gobblers, Lamb Chops and Sweet Teas. “We’ll take the fans’ vote seriously,” said General Manager North Johnson. Keene Rico Cunnington, owner of Rico’s World Kitchen and The Brunch Apothecary, is serving up his international foods at the newest eatery at LanierWorld. “The Break,” located next to the resort’s WildWaves and the Raging River, serves up a diverse menu seven days a week. “It’s all about bringing a taste of what we do at Rico’s World Kitchen to the lake,” said Cunnington, “We use fresh ingredients for each made-to-order item and offer a blend of flavors that’s being met with great reviews.” The menu ranges from the Louisiana Po Boy with fried shrimp or fried fish, the Rowdy Rooster hand-battered chicken with jalapeno goddess sauce, the Tuna Hawaiian Hero made with seared Ahi Tuna and seared pineapple, and the Cuban Traditionale with marinated pork, sliced ham and Swiss cheese served on pressed bread, to the Bahn Mi Bao Buns Asian fusion sandwich. The Great Break Steak Sandwich and the Gold Rush Brisket fill out the menu. The Break has a kids’ menu as well. Meet Rich Little: one of a kind national treasure Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene en like Richard Little are rare as hen’s teeth. At age 93, he’s a World War II veteran of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, a paratrooper who, like so many World War II vets, did his duty to protect freedoms that we Americans hold so dear. But, also like the brave veterans from that long-ago era, he’s reticent to talk about his time in the war. Fast-forward to August 2017. A very young-looking Rich Little sits back in his man-cave pinepaneled library of the house he built on Lake Lanier about 25 years ago when he moved to Georgia at the urging of his younger sister, Marianne and her husband Clay Bowers. “I moved here and less than two years later they moved to Lake Tahoe,” he said matter-of-factly with a slight smile. “And then, I figured I’d live here about five years all together, and look at me, I’m still living in Georgia.” Settling in as a southerner He’s made himself right at home as a Southerner. Born in Ohio, he’s lived on the West and East coasts before settling in Georgia. When he was discharged from the Army, he earned his degree from the University of Michigan, then headed to California to work for General Dynamics, the start of his career in jet propulsion that eventually put him in a job at the Pentagon and meant a change of venue from sunny California to Virginia in the 1980s and early 1990s. He also started and ran a consulting

business from 1992 to 1997. He worked with Atlas and Minuteman missiles and spent time doing evaluation and research for NASA. During his career, Rich took plenty of time for leisurely pursuits. When he lived in California he was an avid snow skier. He also is a pilot and owned a few planes, “because it made it much easier to get to the slopes by flying,” he said. “I flew quite a bit.” While in Virginia he raised horses that ran steeplechase; he also rode in fox hunts. “Horses were a big part of my life when I was in Virginia,” he said. “I had a trainer and several jockeys rode my horses, and even when I moved here I almost always go to the Atlanta Steeplechase.” Vintage car collector Rich’s love of the finer things in life has led him to become a classic car collector. He got into cars around 2000, when he purchased a two-tone dark and dove gray Bentley that supposedly belonged to Joan Crawford. He recently sold the 1956 Bentley to a good friend. “I miss that car, but it’s couldn’t have gone to a better person,” he said. “It was really kind of tough when one day at our breakfast group, he drove up in ‘my’ Bentley, but I’m really glad he has it.” Today, he’s got a pristine 1973 Rolls Royce, plus a 2015 platinum 350 convertible Mercedes and a 2016 Cadillac. He’s also owned a Jaguar convertible and several other classics along the way. So how does Rich decide

He often goes with his next-door neighbor Bill Tannehill, who serves on the board of the Lake Lanier Association. “Bill was one of the first people I met when I moved here,” Rich says. “And I often have supper with him and his wife Diane.” He listens to classical music and reads, enjoying the views of Lake Lanier from his comfortable home under tall hardwoods. He travels a bit, visiting his sisters in Tahoe and Santa Barbara. He’s also traveled the globe, but his favorite places are in Europe, including London, Paris and Austria. 1977 film “A Bridge Too Far,” you’ll be familiar with this campaign that was also called “Operation Market Garden.”) “When we were relieved from Operation Market Garden and sent back to France, we were supposed to be resupplied and reoutfitted,” he quietly explained. “But the Germans attacked our outnumbered troops in the Ardennes and the division was rushed to the Bastone area of Germany without any new equipment or outfitting.” His deployment stretched into 1945. “The time, especially between December 15 and January 15 was the longest 30 days of my life. It was very brutal, and we lost more troops than in any other battle of the United States military. That was the roughest part of the war because we hadn’t been resupplied, the weather was 17 degrees below and we were always trying to keep warm,” he said. “It was the coldest winter in 75 years, and the weather was so bad that we couldn’t fly. Rations were in short supply and basically the mission was a failure.” Rich was interviewed several years ago as part of the Veterans History Project, an initiative that videotapes veterans’ stories. “That’s the first time and the only time I’ve ever talked about the war,” he said quietly. “I just haven’t wanted to talk about my military life; that was 75 years ago.” Rich Little is an American Hero, but he would quickly deny that statement. Little reflects on his fellow paratroopers. “There are not many of us left these days,” he said. “We did what needed to be done.”

North Georgia plans full celebration of total eclipse By Jane Harrison Festivals, wine-tastings, and tailgating parties will celebrate the darkening of the sun in North Georgia Aug. 21 during a total solar eclipse. But, those wanting to see the stars twinkle in the middle of the day will have to head northeast of Lake Lanier. Viewers in Toccoa, Blairsville, Clayton, Dillard, Rabun Gap and Hiawassee will experience nighttime darkness for about 2 minutes around 2:30 p.m. While there may be some partial parties around Lake Lanier, folks near Lake Chatuge will be in total celebration phase with boat raft-ups and “I Blacked Out on Lake Chatuge” t-shirts. All the hoopla is worth it, said Lesley Simanton-Coogan, astronomy professor at the University of North Georgia Dahlonega campus. “At any single spot on earth, a total eclipse can only be seen every 375 years,” she said. “It’s

pretty exciting. It’s a pretty big deal.” Simanton-Coogan, director of the Coleman Planetarium on the Dahlonega campus, explained that as the moon moves between the earth and sun, the lunar shadow will fall on a narrow strip of land. Luckily, that path lies “in our backyard,” she added. Celebrants may not even notice the nearly imperceptible start of the show around 1 p.m. when the moon edges into its starring role. To safely view the action, observers need to wear protective glasses certified for looking at the sun. Welders’ Grade 14 glasses will substitute, Simanton-Coogan noted. It is also possible to create a pin-hole box projector to beam the eclipse image onto the ground or white paper. But don’t look directly at the sun to set it up. Regular sunglasses won’t project eyes against solar burns that can damage vision. Sun spec-

tators without proper safety glasses won’t feel the burn, since the eye’s retina has no pain receptors. Organizers of most eclipse events offer free or cheap protective eyewear. Eclipse watchers around Lake Lanier will experience about a 99 percent eclipse, which will create a “gloomy day” appearance, Simanton-Coogan said. Viewing the total eclipse The last total solar eclipse viewed from contiguous United States was on Feb. 26, 1979 whose path passed through the northwestern U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. After the August 2017 total solar eclipse, the next annular solar eclipse that

can be seen in the continental United States will be on October 14, 2023 which will be visible from Northern California to Florida. Backyard color: Bird baths and summer feeding Remember the birds in the summer heat. While they forage for food on their own, they will also appreciate – and flock to – well-stocked bird feeders and clean-water bird baths. Different birds eat different foods and have different feeding habits. For instance, the varieties of woodpeckers in Northeast Georgia are typically tree-feeders that cling to the bark and eat bugs. Cardinals, eastern bluebirds and many others are perching birds and enjoy a stop at a feeder. The most popular bird food for feeders is black oil sunflower seed. You can purchase it in 20pound bags from hardware stores or box retails. It also comes in a wide range of mixes and cost is typically relative to the amount of “good seed” versus “filler” (usually millet) that’s included. Some birds like cracked corn, shucked sunflower meats and other seeds. The best brand by far has been developed in North Georgia – Cole’s. Growing up sailing: UYC Maritime Camp builds confidence, friendships By Pamela A. Keene The lure of sailing on Lake Lanier brings Samantha Gaito and Daniel Postell back to their home lake for a couple of weeks each summer. They’re not campaigning boats or participating in races; they come back to teach in the University Yacht Club Maritime Foundation’s Junior Sailing Weeks each June. It’s part of their summer jobs on opposite coasts of the country – Sam based in South Florida and Daniel in Seattle – pretty much dream jobs for the months between the school year. Both grew up sailing on Lake Lanier and have been coaching with the UYC program since its inception seven years ago. From junior coaches, both worked their way up the ranks, earned their US Sailing Level I Instructor certifications and this past summer served as lead instructors for the program.

“We are so fortunate to have Sam and Daniel with us each year,” said Susan Reddaway, who with UYC’s Rick Smith, manages the program. “And we have so many of the kids who come back year after year; they’re always so glad to see Sam, Daniel and the other instructors who’ve been with us each season.” Each summer, youngsters come together at UYC to learn about sailing, sportsmanship and boating. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lakke Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. What’s trending now on Lake Lanier property The following column was submitted by Sheila Davis, lead agent for “Lake Lanier’s Finest” at The Norton Agency. The agent Davis offers her top 10 trends in Lake Lanier real estate: 1 - A healthy and vibrant market: With lake home prices nearing 2006 levels, and inventory 30-40 percent down depending on price segment, home sellers are enjoying a steady market with prices edging up about 5 percent this year. Those sellers with deep water are clearly winners with low water properties patiently holding off the market until a full pool re-turns. Buyer activity is high, but with low inventory, it can be frustrating for a buyer to find a home. Homes under $500,000 are in high demand with less than 60 days on the market and we are seeing multiple offers and just days on the market for hot properties. Lake lots are selling again, prices ranging from the $200s in multi slip communities up to lux-

ury lots from the $400s up. A recent lot sale in Forsyth County sold for $800,000 in July. Custom homes are again popping up on the lake, as lots and tear downs are seeing new builds. 2 - The retirement revolution: With the success of Cresswind at Lake Lanier, Harbour Point, Marina Bay, Chestatee, and others, more active adult developments are moving fast to capture demand for new lake homes. An 880 unit active adult development on the lake with boat slips is in final approval in the City of Gainesville, (Dawsonville Highway between Ahaluna Drive and Sportsman Club Road). “Diamond Gardens,” in Cumming, off Pilgrim Mill Road, is completing its clubhouse, tennis courts and pool this summer. Plans are to build 50 luxury homes, with boat slip included at its multi-slip marina. 3 - Second homes on the rise: Buyers of all ages are heading to Lanier for refuge from the “concrete jungle” of Atlanta, or as an escape from crowded beach towns or cold weather locations. With shopping and modern conveniences readily available, sec-

ond home residents can enjoy all that communities have to offer year-round. These buyers are looking for deep water boat dockage, and well-maintained and updated properties that they can move in to with little or no renovation. Second homes are selling from the $250s up to $1,8 million this year. 4 - Outdoor living spaces: With our beautiful and mild weather on Lake Lanier, homeowners are seeking outdoor living spaces more than ever. Whether you have a wooded or water view, enjoying nature and entertaining outdoors is something we all want more of. Swimming pools are in big demand. Elaborate outdoor patios, covered porches, outdoor kitchens, stone fireplaces and hot tubs are sought after. Those lucky enough to be close to the water are building outdoor pavilions and covered patios to get closer to the lake. Properties with an outdoor amenity generally enjoy less time on the market and more resale value. 5 - Luxury lake sales looking up: Luxury home sales over $1 million are up 20 percent over the

last 12 months in number of sales. Low interest rates and improving economy are helping this segment of the market improve, regardless of water levels and low inventory. There are currently 50 homes now on the market over $1 million. Twenty homes have sold, and pending sales are up. Fifty percent of these sales are cash buyers, and about half are second homes. The average million dollar lake home has 4-6 bedrooms and 5 baths with an average of 5,500-8,500 square feet. The average sales price in 2017 is $1.25 million with an average of 90 percent sales to list price ratio. Mary Thompson, of Lake Lanier Appraisal Service, says “Values steadily increasing about 1.5 percent a year for homes priced $899,000-$1,299,000 and values are up 8 percent for homes sold above $1,300,000.” About 75 percent of luxury homes sold have pools and most have screened porches or outdoor living spaces. The luxury homes sales are split evenly between south and north lake locations, with the majority in Hall County this year due to low inventory in other counties.

Natural beauty is synonymous with Florida’s Big Bend “Great white heron, the prima ballerina, strikes her pose as blue herons pirouette. An ibis takes flight with grace as a tri-colored heron waltzes, displaying multihued plumage. Alone on the observation deck, I am blessed to view the ballet, a most welcome, daily, sunrise ritual. Even the nesting wood stork adds his cries to the harmonious melody, echoing through rising mist on pristine wetlands. Peace and poise reign until the predatory osprey swoops across the stage, causing other birds to scatter. Even a basking gator’s eyes rise to observe the flutter of wings. Only the great white heron remains composed.” These are the beautiful words of Carolyn Devonshire from her poem: Florida Nature. Such glorious reflections only begin to describe what visitors can encounter in a forgotten part of Florida that extends south and east from Apalachicola through the Big Bend to Yankeetown. The quiet calm often camouflages the mind boggling possibilities that are available in this natural area. This is a part of Florida that is relatively undeveloped and still looks much like it did before the settlers came. The roads along the coast meander, while forest roads are mostly long and straight, so drive slowly as there is so much to see. The Big Bend National Scenic Byway passes through four counties, three state parks, a National Forest and a National Wildlife Refuge.This route takes you through little coastal fishing villages, by old lighthouses and lots of bridges. The miles of longleaf pine forests, fields of wild flowers and roadside bogs are home to a plethora of wildlife. Most serious sea kayakers have experienced multi-day expeditions along Florida’s Big Bend Gulf Coast. This remote area has one of the longest and wildest

White pelicans and great egrets and numerous other wading birds are seen throughout the marshes. Manatee swim below while bald eagles and ospreys maneuver above the clear waters as they try to spot fish, turtles and small rays in meadows of sea grass. This Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail spans much of the Big Bend from the Aucilla River to Yankeetown, and the northern 105-mile segment from the Aucilla to the Suwannee River is managed by Florida Wildlife Commission. Though some commercial fishing is still done, seafood harvesting laws tend to favor sport fishing these days. Therefore, the unbelievable revival of spotted sea trout, redfish, flounder and sheepshead has made this part of Florida a mecca for anglers with rod and reel. Also, the fertile, spring-fed, saltwater flats of the Wakulla, St. Marks, Steinhatchee, Suwannee and Withlacoochee Rivers have made the Big Bend one of the most popular scalloping areas in the world. Volunteer to work with wildlife with DNR Are you looking for ways to work with or for wildlife? Then become a volunteer with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. “I cannot put into any amount of words my respect and admiration for the good folks that volunteer for our agency,” says Rusty Garrison, WRD director. “They give up one of the most valuable of all commodities in our life – their time. They give so much because they want to ensure that Georgia’s precious, diverse resources are there for both today’s visitors and future generations.” What opportunities will a volunteer have working with WRD? Through their varied knowledge and experienced skill sets, volunteers provide a necessary, effective and important role. They might assist with such opportunities as helping teach stewardship, ethics and safety to youth and adults, help maintain trail and roadway integrity, assist class attendees in building bird or bat houses, provide archery and air rifle instruction, participate in wildlife surveys, put worms or other bait on hooks and take fish off, conduct pre-

scribed burns, and they might even “paint faces” at outdoors events. Does becoming a volunteer make a difference? Ask the participants. Ricky Stringer, a volunteer hunter education instructor, said that kids that attended a recent hunter education event told him “Thank you for such a fun day,” and that success was measured in seeing students that had never shot a gun or picked up a bow were able to “bust” a skeet in mid-air and hit a bullseye with an arrow. Stringer hopes that his efforts increase the chance that students will continue these activities for a lifetime and become a longtime supporter of shooting and hunting activities and maybe even, become a volunteer themselves, one day. Volunteers also make a financial difference. In 2016, volunteers served more than 52,000 hours, providing a federal fund match of $4,000,000 in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife Restoration Program funds (Pittman-Robertson Act).
