By Pamela A. Keene Mark your calendars for January 13-16, when the 49th Annual Atlanta Boat Show docks at the Georgia World Congress Center. With all kinds of boats for every type of person, the show also offers fun attractions for the entire family, plus boating, fishing and sailing courses for novices and experienced captains to hone their skills. “The Atlanta Boat Show is not only the ideal place to compare brands and get a great bargain, but also a great destination to enjoy some nautical fun with the family preparing for boating season,” said Larry Berryman, show manager. “And with hundreds of products to choose from for every activity and budget, plus activities for boaters of all ages, everyone is sure to be inspired to discover why life is truly better with a boat.” The show will feature a number of special events, including: • Affordability Pavilion – Back by popular demand, this area will showcase boats for those with smaller budgets, highlighting pricing options and displaying boats in

all categories that can be financed for $250 per month or less. • 2nd annual Distortion Boarding, Extreme Rail Jam – Boating and outdoor enthusiasts who are looking for adventure can see the nation’s top riders unload a variety of extreme boarding tricks and stunts over a 30,000 gallon landing pool. Powered by the “Grinch Winch” — a portable towing device that pulls riders at speeds of up to 25 mph — pros from Distortion Boarding, Malibu, Mastercraft and Ski Nautique will perform daily riding exhibitions. • Let’s Go Fishing Center – “Reel” fun for everyone, from aspiring anglers to fishing fanatics, the Let’s Go Fishing Center offers everyone a chance to find out what’s new in the world of fishing with daily free seminars and hone their angling skills with live demos. • Miss GEICO – Miss GEICO is back! One of the world’s fastest offshore racing boats, powered with the same turbine engines that flew missions in the first Gulf War and can reach speeds of more than 185 miles per hour, will dazzle any

boating enthusiast with a need for speed. • Pre-Show Shopping – The Atlanta Boat Show’s newest online offering allows attendees to preshop the 2011 show for the greatest deals on the newest boats by visiting AtlantaBoatShow.com. Show goers can plan ahead and search boats by brand, model and more, schedule dealer appointments onsite or at the dealership, plus have the chance to receive free tickets to the show through select participating dealerships. • Sailing Seminars – New for 2011! Perfect for new and seasoned sailors, Windsong Sailing Academy will host a variety of free, daily educational sailing seminars.

• Tupolev 007 Russian Rescue Boat – During the arms buildup, the former Soviet Republic developed some pretty bizarre weapons, vehicles and boats that were never mass produced. This rescue boat was one of them. The Tupolev 007 is a can’t-miss! Reaching speeds of more than 150 miles per hour, this rescue boat is powered by an MP14 aircraft fighter engine and is one of the only three originally produced and the only one still in existence. Its estimated value is $2 million. Look for Lakeside’s full report and guide on the show in the January edition. MORE INFO: www.atlantaboatshow.com

My 2010 holiday gift guide for family and friends At this point in time, the annual Thanksgiving celebration is another fine memory and the leftovers were better than ever. While some of you have your Christmas shopping done, I’m betting that most of you don’t. I belong to the latter group. When done in the right spirit, giving to others brings a lot of satisfaction and does take some thought. The Black Friday door buster specials are over but there are still lots of great deals out there for those who seek them. By paying close attention to the sales of your favorite retailers, you’ll find suitable items for every budget. Begin with the end in mind. Have a budget and develop a list. Although my shopping is yet to begin as I write this, I do have a list. I develop and refine it all year long so that when the time comes, I have a game plan. Some gift buying is easy; many families have items that show up under the tree as a tradition. In my home certain family members are likely expecting Turtles candy, super soft socks, and calendars. The stockings are sure to have some tangerines and apples in addition to the gamut of mystery items. If you don’t have a well developed

safe to use deep fryers have really come down in cost over the past couple of years. I’ve seen them for as little as $30. With one of these, someone can enjoy quality homemade onion rings, hand dipped corn dogs, fried chicken, or fish. The sky’s the limit and even candy bars or pickle chips might not be safe from hot oil. If you’re checking out fryers, you might want to consider a smoker. There’s nothing like well made backyard barbeque ribs, pulled pork, or a smoked chicken. Good smokers offer a great aid in producing fantastic results that could likely make someone the neighborhood barbeque champion. You’ll find smokers fueled by charcoal, electricity, and propane. Many modestly priced units offer great performance. Almost anyone would appreciate a high quality travel mug. Top end stainless steel models cost about $20 and keep beverages piping hot for hours. It’s no secret that men tend to be weather fanatics. We have The Weather Channel but that’s not enough. We want more. You can satisfy this with the gift of a weather station. Models vary widely in cost and features. Obviously, the more expensive models

have a much wider range of capabilities. The top end units are impressive indeed. If someone spends a lot of time outdoors in the winter, fleece or flannel lined jeans are hard to beat for keeping warm. Shop early for these as the most common sizes tend to give out as Christmas nears. If someone enjoys a bit of comfort on cold evenings and mornings, lounge pants are a must. Made of super soft flannel type material, these are perfect for hanging out in the living room in front of a warm fire. Gifts for her Buying gifts for the woman in your life does not have to be difficult, even when she’s counting on you to be telepathic about what she might like. Believe me, I know how many miles you’ve walked and how many hours you’ve spent staring blankly into store front windows. We’ve all been to that place and we’ll all probably be back again at some point. I’m going to offer a few tips so you won’t have as many troubles this time around. Lanier Fishing Report

Continued from Page 4 to know what she likes. Does she like birds? If so, the cardinal/winter scene design might make a fine choice. Does she prefer bright hues or earth tones? Whatever you decide, a critical factor is getting the right size. Go back to the closet checking research I mentioned in the first paragraph. Be sure to check sizes on things that you have actually seen her wearing recently. Is it hard to remember? Also, take a peek at sweaters she has purchased for herself, not the ones you may have given her before you figured things out. Unless you gave them last year, slippers could be a fine choice. By now you know how to find the right size without asking. Choose models that look stylish and feel so good that you wish they came in men’s styles. Under no circumstances should you pick up a set of fuzzy slippers. On a similar theme, a cozy plush bath robe is typically a good bet and there’s no sizing dilemma to contend with. Gloves are always popular. They are typically on the “every other year” list in my home. Really cozy sets can be pretty inexpensive and sizing is simple. They either stretch or come in sizes small, medium, or large. Whether they are for use or permanent decoration, many women enjoy candles around the home. One really neat type I’ve seen this year is the Candle by the Hour. A simple device times a length of slender rope like candle for a one hour burn.

These are a throw back to simpler times when they were referred to as “courting candles” which were used for allocating time suitors could spend with a young lady during a visit supervised by the family. Although some are made in holiday themes, others are elegantly simple and would make fine year round decorations for a den or living room. Nature is yet another popular category. I’ve never given my wife a bird feeder or house that wasn’t well appreciated, especially when surrounded by hungry beaks or hosting a brood of blue birds. If you’re stuck on what to get for her and time is running out, look to the ideas in this paragraph for help. Don’t forget the kids I didn’t really think you would! Because of how special they are to us, we normally take care of them first. As a society, we have broken the norms of boy toys and girl toys. Granted, today a number of toys come in pink and traditional colors but that’s a trend. Pink is hot when it comes to girls having fun with old school boy toys. Although they did not come in pink, my daughter grew up playing with flying airplanes made from kits, fishing rods, and other things that provided fun times for everyone. These days, air rifles are more popular than ever. Basic models by Daisy even (yes) come in pink! There’s See Fishing, page 12

Lake level: Approximately 1068 or three feet below full pool Surface Temp: Upper 50s Clarity: Clear in most areas with just a little color in the very upper parts of tributaries Bass fishing has been fair to good lately. Lately, most of the fish are being caught in water depths of 10 to 20 feet. Areas with rock or wood cover have been the best although some pretty good catches have also been made by fishing docks with deep water close by. Some decent numbers have been caught in shallower waters as well lately. Expect the shallow bite to dissipate with the onset of colder weather. The number one lure it seems has been the standard shakey head rig which is nothing more than your favorite finesse style worm paired with a specialty lead head. Skirted jigs in green pumpkin pepper and similar colors have also been getting some bites in the intermediate depths. There have been no reports of the jigging spoon bite lately but get ready for this pattern. As the water continues to cool look for concentrations of fish holding deeper near the creek channels. Use your sonar to find concentrations of baitfish in these areas. The bass will usually be close by. Striper fishing has been good lately on both ends of the lake. A number of anglers have reported schools of fish chasing bait on the surface. The sea gulls can help you to pinpoint this activity from a distance. Three eighth ounce white and silver mylar bucktail jigs tipped with plastic trailers are the every day favorites for getting strikes from these schoolers. If you get into a pod of stubborn fish, try waiting for a swirl and lobbing a live baitfish with no weight as close as possible to the action. Look near the creek mouths up and down the lake and seek out concentrations of baitfish. If you’re not spotting feeding fish or locating baitfish near, the creek mouths, move up the tributaries and keep an eye on your sonar. While looking for schooling fish, you can have a lot of action on flat lines. Try small live trout or herring drifted about 100 feet behind the boat. Lastly, don’t leave the down rods at home. If you’re spotting schools of fish down at 25 feet or so then bait up and drop down to their level. Both flat lines and down lines will produce many fish throughout the winter season.

Visit the USCGA during the upcoming Atlanta Boat Show Cold weather is on the way and boats are being winterized. Next on your agenda should be the 49th annual Atlanta Boat Show, again being held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, on January 13-16, 2011. This show will be one day shorter than previous ones. One of the many things I really like about this boat show is the timing. It’s too cold to boat, unless you are a diehard fisherman, and football season is almost over, with the exception of the playoffs and Super Bowl. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is not performing safety patrols on area lakes unless special circumstances call for our presence. It’s a great time to gather up the family and take in a boat show, talking with the manufacturer’s representatives and the dealers, who are selling all kinds of vessels to suit the needs of anyone or any family. There are also booths where all kinds of boating paraphernalia will be offered, from electronics to life jackets. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will also have a booth, again located in the front lobby next to the Coast Guard traveling exhibit. By the

Roy Crittenden USCG Auxiliary

way, it is important to choose the right type of boat for your needs, as we will discuss now. Another thing you should know is that over 90 percent of registered boats in the United States are trailerable boats, meaning that their length usually does not exceed 26 feet and their weight is maximized at around 5,000-6,000 pounds. Vessels larger than that usually call for special towing rigs not available to the average family. “Boats come in many models, sizes, and types. Each serves a specific need. A boat developed for one purpose may serve poorly for another. Likewise, a boat that is safe in one set of conditions may not be safe for others. When you select a boat, be sure that it will suit your needs”. Let’s now look at the overall types of boats avail-

able. Of course, we have sailing vessels and some even have engines! Then we have other groups of boats known as utility boats, runabouts, cruisers, pontoon boats, houseboats, personal watercraft, yes, they are also called boats, and others. These are the types most seen on area lakes and rivers. If a family intends to host guests who are a little apprehensive about boating, a pontoon boat makes a great platform, offering room to walk around and generally slower in speed, offering a smoother ride. If you plan to spend some nights under the stars, you should look at the cabin cruisers, beginning around 24 feet and running on up. They usually accommodate two adults and two children. Houseboats are “floating condos” and you can entertain the whole neighborhood! A fairly new addition to the boating line is the “deck boat,” which combines the space and openness of a pontoon boat with the speed through the water of a planning hull boats like runabouts or cruisers. Generally, there is no cabin space, also common to the pontoon boat. These boats have gained in popu-

larity over the past few years. That’s about as far as we can go with this, but for you first time boat owners, I hope this overview will help. One last thought; it’s a good idea to have a way to keep one or all of your passengers out of the sun, and sometimes out of the rain. This calls for a “hardtop” cover or a canvas top, sometimes referred to as a “bimini” top. The latter type can be folded down when not wanted. You can also add clear vinyl enclosure to further protect you from the elements. And please visit the booths that feature equipment for your boat. This will be a great time to consider a VHF marine radio if you don’t currently have one. The Coast Guard does not recommend a cell phone as your only means of communication. If you have

room on your dashboard, and the location is fairly protected from rain, we recommend one of those. The transmitting power is 25 watts. If your boat is a smaller version with no room for a mounted radio, you may want to consider a hand held VHF radio. TESTIMONIALS FROM BUYERS & SELLERS SHOW BEVERLY WILLIAMS DELIVERS! Jim Gregory & Rick Hoyle, Sellers “Beverly has made selling our home on Lake Lanier a GREAT experience! We have a new friend as well as a great agent! Thanks for everything!”

Buy a “Foreclosure” w/Beverly Tasha W. Barnes, Buyer “From the moment I spoke to Beverly, she was the most courteous professional Realtor that I have ever met. As we discussed my first home preferences, Beverly continuously took into consideration the wants and needs of my disabled mother. Beverly always kept me on track and we were able to find my "perfect first home" within 2 weeks! Beverly Williams made the entire process from the first home viewing...to the initial contract...to the closing A STRESS FREE EVENT. I would highly recommend Beverly Williams to anyone who in the home buying market. Thanks for everything, Beverly!”

Buy a “Freddie Mac” w/Beverly

Mary Ann Drury, Seller “I want to express our sincere appreciation for the extraordinary efforts and time that Beverly put into the sale of our home. She worked above and beyond the expectations of what most people think a realtor will do to assist us in the sale of our home. We knew when interviewing realtors that Beverly was the best of the best. Her honesty and forthrightness were outstanding qualities that caught our attention immediately. Beverly's dedication to follow-up and keep us informed throughout our extremely long and difficult sale show her high professional manner. It would not have happened if it had not been for Beverly!”

Buy a “Short Sale” w/Beverly Jeff & Alicia Knowles, Buyers “Being first time home buyers we were very pleased with the help that we received from Beverly. We really appreciate her patience and the time she put into finding us a home with our crazy work schedule. She accommodated us at our convenience. Beverly, you are really great at what you do!”

Alexis Chambers, Buyer “I was referred to Beverly Williams by a family member who is also a Realtor. He had the utmost confidence that she would be able to help me find what I was looking for within my price range. The house that I put the contract on happened to be a FORECLOSURE. My experience with Beverly was great but my experience in buying a foreclosure was a nightmare! Without Beverly's persistence in dealing with the bank's Realtor and the Attorney for the Bank I still may not be in my home. I really couldn't have gone through the process without a Realtor. Beverly went above and beyond to help me get this home. I actually closed 2 months after putting a contract on the foreclosed house which is almost unheard of in today's market. Buying a FORECLOSURE is a stressful process… and I could not imagine getting it done without Beverly's assistance.”

Bart & Claudia Hodges, Sellers “We would recommend Beverly Williams to anyone wanting to sell their home. Other agents we spoke with wanted us to list our home for lower than our selling price, but Beverly recognized the value of our home. She developed a beautiful brochure that showcased the assets or our home and looked great on her website. Her marketing efforts paid off in a quick sale in a slow market. Beverly and her excellent staff stayed in touch throughout the process and were great to work with.”

Buy a “Fannie Mae” w/Beverly Bryan Morris, Seller “Beverly, I cannot even begin to adequately express my deep appreciation and gratitude for all that you did to help me through this grueling house-selling process. Your very high level of expertise, knowledge, and professionalism were why I wanted to work with you, but I was continually grateful for your warmth and heartfelt friendliness during those times when I got discouraged. I am firmly convinced that I got the best representation from initial listing to final closing because I was working with you. Thank you so very much for all of the extras including all of the marketing that you provided. Keep up the hard work, and best of luck in the future. Thanks again a hundredfold!”

Lanier fishermen start crappie club to build habitats, host tournaments By Pamela A. Keene There’s a new fishing club on Lake Lanier. Targeting “Crappie” or sometimes “Croppie,” or “Paper-mouth,” the club’s name is Lanier Crappie Anglers. “Crappie fishing can be enjoyed by adults and children and it doesn’t require high-dollar boats, expensive electronics or costly rods and reels,” said Dan Saknini with the club. “Another positive is that you can be away from the main lake traffic, fishing in the backs of creeks.” The Corps of Engineers has placed fish attractors in various locations around the lake that are geared toward crappie. Additionally, the club will be installing bamboo habitats during club work parties. The club saves the GPS locations of the habitats. The club had 22 anglers at its first meeting and organizers expect it to grow quickly to 50 or 60 people. Meetings – on the last Wednesday of every month – are being held at Hammond’s Fishing Center, 4255 Browns Bridge Rd. in Cumming. Keith Pace, a long-time professional crappie guide, is in

White crappie. charge of the club. Crappie is also an “eating” fish and the club plans several fish fries throughout the year. Starting in February the group will have a monthly-low cost tournament for those wishing to compete. “Our goal is to improve the fishery by creating more habitats for crappie and to get crappie fishing on Lanier to be more of a year round sport and not just a spring

time fancy,” Saknini said. “Crappie can be caught year round on Lanier and with just a little work you can have ‘honey holes’ to fish any time of the year and catch fish.” Club dues help cover the cost of concrete, buckets and other cost associated with placing the structure in the lake. When a member’s dues are paid and the member attends a work day they will receive the current list of fish attractor locations.

• Fishing Continued from Page 5 nothing like one of these to provide hours of supervised fun and add to the building blocks of responsible behavior. Youth bows follow a similar theme. These range from foam arrow models suitable for indoor play to those that are perfect for target practice in the back yard. If you’re looking for more indoor fun, try the Duck Hunter Xtreme. This was hot last year and now it’s better. A soft and comical looking mechanical duck flaps around in the living room as the hunter fires at it with a toy gun that emits a signal like your television remote control. When the lightweight duck is hit, it shuts down and falls to the floor. This year there is an added twist: a second person pilots the duck to evade the hunter. I can see how this could be huge fun for the kids, dad, the dog, and the cat (sorry Mom). On a similar theme, a new game has hit the street this season. It’s the Indoor Skeet Shooter. I think this one will be hot. It works on the same principle as the duck game. The signal from the gun causes the reusable soft flying targets to break apart

Advance Marine Services, Inc.

when hit. This one could also be fun for dad. For the younger set, kid’s tents are always a hit. Small and inexpensive models can be set up in nearly any room and provide hours of fun while “camping out.” Yes, these do come in pink. Adventure play sets consisting of toy trucks, boats, people, and animals compliment the camp site perfectly. These days, some of the vehicles are even remote control. Retro toys are a ton of fun. Try balsa gliders, wind up planes and boomerangs for starters. I gave my nephew a boomerang last year. My brother still thanks me.

In closing, I hope these thoughts will make your shopping easier this year and provide some nice things for the ones you love. In addition to the reverence it deserves, this time of year is all about enjoying family and friends. A bit of giving is very nice as well. Have a very Merry Christmas and happy new year. From mountains to the sea, Georgia’s hooked on fishing

Only state in nation to boast presence of six species of black bass Georgia has a diversity of bass that continues to reel in anglers from across the nation. As the only state in the nation with six of the seven black bass species, Georgia stands out as a bass angler’s paradise. This fall, regardless of where you are in the state, bass fishing opportunities abound, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division is providing anglers with some helpful bass fishing information. “Bass are a favorite species for anglers, and while people are most familiar with largemouth bass, it is by no means the only bass angling opportunity in the state,” says John Biagi, the division’s chief of Fisheries Management. “We encourage all anglers, beginners and experienced, to get out this fall, enjoy the weather and fish for bass - and don’t forget to take a kid fishing!” Several species of black bass are fall favorites, including largemouth, smallmouth, shoal and spotted bass. Redeye and Suwannee round out the six available black bass species in Georgia. The knowledge of where to go

Jim French

is just part of the ammunition necessary to becoming a successful bass angler – having the right equipment is the other component for success. For species such as largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, the division recommends using a six-foot medium action, spinning outfit spooled with eight to 10-pound test line. Next, you need to determine if you will be fishing top-water or deep-water. The top-water bite typically is best in the early morning and late evening. During fall, bass key in on shad forage while feeding up for the winter. Floating or shallow running baits resembling small shad, minnows or blueback herring will entice bites from all three bass species. For deepwater bass angling, use 1/4 - 3/8 oz. jigheads with your favorite plastic curly-tailed grub or plastic shad lure skewered on it (recommended colors: green pumpkin and watermelon seed), Texas or Carolina rigged plastic worms and lizards, jigging spoons, deep diving crankbaits, live nightcrawlers or minnows. Deep-water angling can be utilized year-

round, but can be especially effective in summer and winter when fish move offshore in a lake or reservoir. Another fall favorite, striped bass, often confused as one of Georgia’s six black bass species, actually belong to the temperate bass family. Anglers can find some exceptional striped bass fishing in Georgia, including native coastal river populations. When fishing for striped bass in Georgia’s estuaries, one should come equipped with a mediumheavy spinning outfit (20-30 pound class) with one of the new small diameter superlines. This will assist in getting the bait to the bottom where striped bass are feeding on shrimp. Effective lures include 1/2 3/4 oz. bucktail jigs, 1 oz. rattle traps and 1 oz. swim shads. For bass fishing throughout Georgia, the division recommends the following fishing spots and the species to pursue at each: • Lakes Hartwell, Nottely and Lanier – Oct.-Dec. is a great time to catch spotted and largemouth bass on these major impoundments. Anglers should target

deeper offshore areas of 10-30 ft. of water and structures such as standing timber, submerged islands with woody cover (brush and stumps) and rocks. Bass will often suspend over open water at these depths, feeding on shad and blueback herring. • Chattahoochee River (below Morgan Falls Dam) – Fall provides excellent largemouth, spotted and shoal bass fishing on the Chattahoochee. Anglers can take many approaches – jon boats, wading and float tubes to get close to their favorite species. Fly-fishing also is a productive method for bass on the river. • Lake Oconee – Fall is a great time to catch largemouth bass on this reservoir. Anglers should concentrate on tributary arms such as Sugar Creek, Lick Creek and Richland Creek. Anglers should focus on depths with less than five feet of water and target the tributary arms where threadfin shad should be migrating. • Lake Richard B. Russell – Largemouth and spotted bass fishing this time of year can be excellent, especially when the water temperatures drop into the

60s. Concentrate on major creek arms where you’ll find bass following schools of baitfish (threadfin shad) as they migrate into creeks. Anglers should also target offshore areas such as standing timber and submerged islands, as bass will suspend over these areas feeding on shad and blueback herring. • West Point Lake – Serious largemouth bass anglers need to head to this lake to test their skills. As water temperatures cool, areas to target include creek mouths and points, the upper end of the lake and around the numerous blown down trees in the water. • Big Lazer Public Fishing Area (PFA) – If you like fishing for largemouth on a smaller lake, give this 195-acre PFA a try. It’s intensely managed to produce extra pounds of bass. In the fall, bass often are caught in shallow to medium-depth water near structure and drop-offs in the coves or off the main channel. • Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center/Marben Farms PFA – Bass fishing always picks up in the fall See Bass, page 21

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

LLRC Women’s Youth Novice 8 places high at Hooch By Jane Harrison The December monthly tribute goes to Lake Lanier Rowing Club’s Women’s Youth Novice 8 boat that finished sixth of 28 teams in the Nov. 6-7 Head of the Chattahoochee in Chattanooga. Seat 6 rower Sloane Rodgers, a senior from North Gwinnett High School, served as spokeswomen for the crew. Crew members: Sloane Rodgers, Amber Rewis, Holly Shilling, Olivia Varnson, Autumn DeLorne, Kelsey Scanlan, Rachel Yarger, Catalina Dunn, and coxswain Nicole Ramnauth. Rowing background: The crew of high school novice rowers from Hall and Gwinnett counties started practicing in September and adapted quickly to the sport, Rodgers said. Prior to the 3,000 meter Head of the Chattahoochee, their only other regatta was the 500 meter Lanier Night Sprints in late September. All but one of the crew rowed in that event. “It was an eye-opener as to what we had to do and how hard we had to work,” she said. The race launch: Said Rodgers – “We were pretty excited (about rowing in the biggest regatta in the Southeast). We were the only novice team to perform a standing shove off the dock (to launch their boat). We had been practicing. We as a team had to balance ourselves. It set the mood for the race. Other teams could not do it. We were so happy! We had to row 6,000 meters to the start. Tensions were high. It was exciting to see all the other boats. The atmosphere was amazing.” The race: “We started out giving our all. We had wanted to impress each other and the other boats. We

started passing boats in the first 500 meters. When we passed the first boat we felt the energy enliven us. We thought, ‘Wow, we can do this!’” Their reaction: “It was an amazing experience. We were so happy after the race,” Rodgers said. Why they do it: Rodgers said she was influenced by her mother’s exposure to rowing in the northern states. “I had been swimming and around water all my life. The first time I tried rowing, I fell in love with it. It’s an amazing sport.” She added that she and the crew enjoy the team aspect of rowing. “It’s team oriented – you have to work together to move the boat.” Goals: Rodgers said she was “really excited” about seeing her crew again after a brief break following the Hooch. They will begin off-water training to prepare for spring regattas. “In the spring we want to get in and place in as many regattas as we can.” Coach’s comments: Coach Jim Pickens expressed pride in the crew that beat other boats from established youth organizations with 100-plus kids. “The biggest thing that makes a difference in speed is depth,” he said. “We had exactly eight girls. We took what we had to work with and they made it work really well. This is the first season (for LLRC youth), technically, to go to Head of the Hooch. This was the first time for these girls to see a (3,000 meter) race course. They were like deer in the headlights. Of the five crews that finished ahead of them, only two were from the Southeast. That makes them in the top three in the Southeast. This was a fantastic first time regatta.”

The LLRC Women's Youth Novice 8 crew launched their Head of the Chattahoochee race with a standing shove, a manouever rarely accomplished by novice crews. Crew members are Nicole Ramnauth, Amber Rewis, Holly Shilling, Sloane Rodgers, Olivia Varnson, Autumn DeLorne, Kelsie Scanlan, Rachel Yarger and Catalina Dunn.

LLRC masters, youth place in Head of the Hooch By Jane Harrison Lake Lanier Rowing Club masters and junior rowers placed well in the Nov. 6-7 Head of the Chattahoochee regatta in Chattanooga. The regatta, held at Ross’s Landing on the Tennessee River attracted more than 9,000 participants and nearly 2,000 boats in the largest regatta in the Southeast. LLRC Head Coach/Executive Director Jim Pickens said he was “happy with individual performances” of both masters and junior

rowers. The regatta results listed the club as 10th place out of 60 clubs competing in the event. It was the first big regatta for the club’s new junior crew, most of whom had never seen a 3,000 meter head race before. LLRC top results follow: • Men’s Master 2: Henry Kannapell, Bob Spengler, 2nd of 11 boats, 18:05. • Mixed Masters 4x: Henry and Cecily Kannapell, Bob and Kris Spengler; 2nd of 15 boats, 16:58.

14th annual Polar Bear Swim sponsors, jumpers sought By Jane Harrison It’s time to get start getting acclimated for New Year’s Day at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. That’s when area “polar bears” are expected to line up on the boathouse docks to plunge into the frigid lake in the 14th annual Polar Bear Swim. The event, put on by the Lake Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, is set for 2 p.m. Organizer Tim Watson hopes that 150 to 200 New Year’s celebrants will take the leap. Traditionally around 100 jumpers, some clad in costumes, Speedos, or bikinis, jump into the lake in the tradition that draws a frenzy of area media crews. Prizes are awarded for the best costume, best jump, and oldest and youngest jumper. Early registration at $20 for individuals (postmarked by Dec. 20) is currently under way. Family registration, limited to four immediate family members, is $50. Registration forms are available in this edition of Lakeside News (see right) and from LCKC at www.lckc.org or (770) 2877888. After their jump, participants get to warm up with a dip in a hot tub and refuel with a bowl of chili, a hot drink and dessert. Plus, they get a Polar Bear Tshirt to commemorate their daring deed. Swimmers should bring a towel, change of clothing, flip flops or water shoes. Watson, who is organizing his third Polar Bear Swim, said the elements are part of the attraction. Whether it’s a bright sunny day or a gray afternoon with a wintry mix, the mood is generally cheerful, despite some healthy trepidation about lake water hovering around 40 degrees. “A mid day swim, hot food, and a lot of people having fun” combine for a great event, Watson said. As of early December, LCKC was still offering Polar Bear Swim sponsorships ranging from $500 to $100 for company logos on the Top sponsors also get to serve 2011 T-shirt, signs and banners, as celebrity judges for best jumps Continued from Page 18 and free jumps. and costumes. • Men’s Masters 4x: Henry Kannapell, Bob Spengler, Phil Sutton, Morgan Mellette, 10 of 17, 16:58. • Women’s Masters 4x: Pam Piper, 14th annual Polar Bear Swim Lauren Pickens, DeEnna Walters, • When: 2 p.m. New Year’s Day Sandra Stoessel, 12 of 24, 18:29. • Where: Lake Lanier Olympic Venue Boathouse, 3105 Clarks • Women’s Masters 8: Jayne Berry, Bridge Rd., Gainesville Inez Grant, Pam Piper, Eileen • Cost: Early registration, postmarked by Dec. 20, $20 Varnson, Kris Spengler, Cecily individuals; $50 families, $25 individuals after Dec. 20. Holiday gift ideas for the captain and crew The Christmas season is upon us and we have to decide on gifts for our Captain, first mate and crew. Here are some suggestions that should go over big on Christmas morning. One gift that I think every boater should have is a membership with Boat/U.S. It offers towing service and discounts at marinas in the U.S. that can save you money when fueling your boat. There are discounts at West Marine when you spend over $250, discounts on cruises such as the Star Sailing Clipper Cruise. The Boat U.S. Magazine which has articles that will inform, entertain, and protect you and your family. The cost is only $24 per year and you will find as I have it is well worth it. If your Captain performs boat maintenance, then a Snap-On general service tool set in a carrying case would be a great gift. This 71-piece high quality set of tools will help any Captain perform most maintenance projects. Cost is $340 and it has a lifetime warranty. Contact Snap-On Tools at 877-762-7664 or www.snapon.com. Every boat needs a good spotlight on board. Stanley has an ultra bright five watt L.E.D. waterproof spotlight. It delivers 200 lumens and can do so for up to 10 hours of continuous use. It is also water resistant. Contact Stanley Tools at 1-800-262-2161 or www.stanleytools.com. The cost is $60 so why not buy two? Every serious boat mechanic needs a good volt-ohm meter to trace electrical problems with onboard systems. The MM2000 Multimeter measures AC/DC voltage to a 1000 volts and AC/DC current to 10 amps. It comes with a thermocouple and test leads. Contact Klein Tools at 847-821-5500 or www.kleintools.com. If you boat offshore, a must is a P.L.B. (personal locator beacon), or EPIRB. Both will send your location to satellites to ensure a quick rescue when you are in a mayday situation. These are available through West Marine. Several units are offered from $300 to $1,500. Select the correct one for your offshore excursions and you will feel safer when cruising out at sea. Any sensible Captain who cruises offshore regularly will always carry a ditch bag. Those who don’t have one should definitely get one for his safety as well as his crew. If you have one, maybe some items might need to

Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments

be brought up to date. Here’s a list of what should be in a floatable ditch bag: • Waterproof hand held VHF radio • P.L.B. (personal locator beacon) • Flares • Strobe • ACR c-strobe • Powerflare safety light • Signal mirrors, whistles • Rope (to keep crew together) • Knife • First aid kit • Drinking water • Sunscreen Now you might think “I’ll never need this,” and you may not. But if you do it sure will help while you are waiting for help to arrive. Remember when you read the headlines of those lost at sea verses those rescued usually a ditch bag was the difference. For those who like to read, a copy of “Chapmans” might be appropriate. It will answer any questions regarding rules of the road. It would also be helpful for anyone taking U.S.C.G Auxiliary or Power Squadron boat courses. For fishermen a new book called “A Passion for Tarpon” by Andy Mill would be a great gift. It’s also recommended as a great and fascinating read by well known fisherman Lefty Kreh. Contact Wild River Press at 425486-3638 or www.wildriverpress.com. Other items that would make welcome gifts: handheld VHS or GPS units, replacing required U.S.C.G. equipment on board, anchor and rode, fire extinguishers, flares, fenders, boat hook, lines, and life jackets. Maybe you have a youngster who needs a life jacket that will fit properly. Get one with a character they can identify with and they will wear it. Maybe you have someone who is a “tough buy.” A friend of mine from Australia has The Australian Catalogue Company which has something of interest for kids or adults from Australia. Their warehouse is in Jackson, Ga. so you won’t have shipping from Australia. They have Christmas stockings with Australian goodies to boom-a-

rangs to stuffed toys - Koala bears, kangaroos and other animals native to Australia. Contact 1-800-808-0938 or www.aussiecatalog.com. If you want a boat for your family, the Atlanta Boat Show will be January 13-16, 2011. Only four days so mark your calendar and watch for special prices on boats in the show. Those of you who have a crew that likes t-shirts, maybe one with their favorite catch displayed on it. Contact: Anglers Center at 877-254-3183 or www.anglerscenter.com. Here’s another source; Blue Water Shirt Club at 1-800-990-8337 or www.bluewatershirtclub.com. Some of them will put your favorite photo on a t-shirt for you. Whatever you decide to give or you receive let’s hope it makes a Merry Christmas for Captain and crew. America’s Cup Most sailors and yachtsman are familiar with all the lawsuits and arguments leading up to last America’s Cup which the winner brought back to the U.S. Now the 34th America’s Cup races will again be sailed with catamarans and fixed wing sails. The boats will be 72’ and are designed to travel at twice the speed of the wind. Personally I prefer the mono-hulls and the talent it took to pick the correct sails, but we are in a new era and mono-hulls will be history. I’m sure there will be a lot of pros and cons before the next cup race in 2013. Fast ‘toons Recently I reported about pontoon boats approaching the 100 mph mark. I predicted it wouldn’t be long before they broke that barrier. Well, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout provided the setting for this to occur, and a 27’ Playcraft Powertoon surpassed 100 mph. The same weekend Southbay ‘toons did the same. Running barn doors at that speed is hairy and dangerous. It wouldn’t surprise me if the next thing we hear about fast ‘toons, will be a blow over. Let’s hope they survive and the nonsense of fast ‘toons ends. They are for relaxation, not speed. Laura Decker Fifteen-year-old Laura Decker who set sail on her solo circumnavigation from Gibraltar earlier this year and reached the Canary Islands to wait out the Atlantic hurricane season has set sail again across the Atlantic Ocean. Laura is not trying to set a record, just a solo circumnavigation, and if she

does she will be the youngest to do so. On November 11, she wrote on her blog that she was next heading for the next Cape Verde Islands, Sao Nicolau and planned to be there by Nov. 18. Check out her blog at www.lauradekker.nl/English/Home.html. New Year’s resolutions Let’s start with slowing down at “No Wake Zones” and also at times when it’s courteous to do so. • Don’t take up all of the dock when fueling or mooring to go to a restaurant, leave room for others. • No beers for the Captain unless you have a designated skipper. • Take a U.S.C.G. Auxiliary course or Power Squadron course. Completion of a course will likely give you a 10 percent discount on boat insurance. • Get a U.S.C.G. Auxiliary boat inspection. This will let you know your boat is in compliance with regulations. • Be courteous, have fun and return to port safely. Fish thief In the 1970s I lived in the Northwoods of Wisconsin on Black Oak Lake, which was close to the town of Land O’Lakes. When winter arrived (about the end of September), fishermen were counting the days till the ice was thick enough to fish over their favorite hole. When it did the lake in front of my house looked as if 50 outhouses had appeared, actually fishing shanties. That’s when we knew fishing season had started. The catch was bass, walleye, lake trout, or bream. I had a very large one year old black Labrador retriever that was full of himself and would re-

trieve any thing I could throw. I called him Johnny Rebel and tied a red neckerchief around his neck. He would frequently check out and visit the ice fishermen. One day a fisherman caught a nice walleye and threw it on the ice; you don’t need coolers at winter temperatures. Johnny Rebel saw this and figured the fish was fair game to bring back to his master. The fisherman would see the thief and jump on his snowmobile to retrieve his catch. Johnny would scratch at the back door and about the time I’d open it the fisherman would arrive and not too happy about the situation. I would offer the fish back and apologize for my dog’s behavior. They said they didn’t want a fish that had been in a dog’s mouth. So I appeased them with a gift of a six pack of beer, a common rate of exchange in Wisconsin which helped the situation and all was well until the next time Johnny Rebel saw a fish tossed on the ice. This same scenario repeated itself throughout the winter and I gave away many six-packs, but I also had some great fish dinners. I’m convinced that black labs stay in their puppy stage for at least two or more years. It sure was a sight when I’d look out over the lake and here comes Johnny Rebel with dinner in his mouth with a snowmobile in hot pursuit. Don’t forget the 49th Annual Atlanta Boat Show on January 13-16, 2011 and it’s only for four days this year. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you at the boat show. LAKESIDE 21

Lake advocacy is major role for Lake Lanier Association By Joanna Cloud Executive Director The Lake Lanier Association serves as the voice of citizens around the lake and across the region, striving to represent all aspects and users of the lake, from recreation to fish and wildlife to homeowners. The association seeks to use a balanced approach to protect Lake Lanier, recommending reasonable solutions to issues that affect the lake, such as water quality and water quantity. The group of homeowners which originally started the association has evolved and grown to a large organization with a variety of missions and programs, acting as an education and knowledge resource for many government and private groups interested in the health of the lake. The group is comprised of lake residents, individuals, families, businesses, boaters and fishermen dedicated to preserving Lanier for future generations. In recent years, the association has successfully represented the lake in several legal actions, including the proposed discharge of 40 million gallons a day of treated waste-water into the lake by Gwinnett County and the on-

Lake Lanier Association News & Information

going tri-state water negotiations. The association is managed by a volunteer board of directors that meets monthly to coordinate projects for the association and address challenges facing the lake. It has a paid executive director who manages the administration of the association, creates a quarterly newsletter and coordinates board projects. Among the most visible projects of the Lake Lanier Association are: • Shore Sweep, a massive volunteer clean-up of the shoreline and waters of Lake Lanier, held annually for the past 22 years and fully staffed by volunteers – from scout troops to church groups, with more than 1,000 volunteers per year collecting more than 300 tons of garbage since the event’s inception • Adopt-a-lake, an orchestrated

lake-wide water testing program, also run by volunteers, to regularly monitor and report the quality of water at various pre-determined sites • Political candidates forums – public meetings to allow constituents to learn where candidates stand on issues that affect Lanier • Public programs – meetings, including our annual meeting, to inform the public about issues affecting Lanier • Agency monitoring – continued awareness about actions of various public and government agencies that may affect the quality of the lake • Legal actions, when necessary – joining with other organizations, such as the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, to ensure that the lake will be protected from further pollution • Newsletter – informational newsletter to our membership of 2,500-plus families and/or businesses (representing 5,500 people) throughout the Southeast to keep them updated on issues such as the tri-state water negotiations. Members of the association’s board of directors serve on various advisory panels and in gov-

ernment-appointed positions that involve Lanier. The group encourages interaction with other environmental and conservation organizations. Founded in 1966, the Lake Lanier Association is the oldest volunteer group working to protect the high water quality as well

as water levels and to preserve its valuable legacy for future generations. It is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization. MORE INFO: www.lakelanier.org 770-503-7757

•Bass Continued from Page 14 as bass become more aggressive when the water temperature drops. Bennett and Fox lakes are the best place for “lunker” size bass and anglers should concentrate on fishing flooded timber and calm waters in the mornings for their best chance at this PFA. • Lake Walter F. George (Lake Eufaula) – Fall largemouth fishing is typically good on WF George. Fish can be found schooling in creeks and can be caught early and late near shoreline vegetation. As the weather turns cooler, fish associate with the numerous ledges and docks found throughout the lake. Recommended lures include

crankbaits, jigs and spinnerbaits. • Toccoa River - The Toccoa River watershed is the best place to hook a homegrown smallmouth. They are present in the river just upstream (south) from Lake Blue Ridge, in the reservoir itself, and in the warmer, lower half of the lake’s tailwater near McCaysville. Tossing a herring-imitating crankbait or a live crawfish toward rocky banks and points in the reservoir is a best bet for Georgia bassers wanting to add this species to their list of caught fish. Although fishing was slow at times because of cold weather, the second annual Gold Rush Cup Fly Fishing Challenge did provide an exciting finish. Corey Roberts pulled in a 24-inch rainbow trout with only five minutes left to compete and wrapped up the title for himself and his Team Rio teammate, Jackie Gooch. Winners of the Amateur Challenge, which was held for the first time this year, were Wes Neal and Kevin Kiley, who called their team Hooch. Corey Roberts also captured the award for Best Angler in the professional division with 117 inches caught. The Best Angler in the ama-

teur category was Wes Neal, who had 44 inches of fish caught. The two-day event, which featured the Amateur Challenge on Saturday and the Gold Rush Cup Challenge on Sunday, was held at Frog Hollow on the Chestatee River in Lumpkin. Sponsoring the event was the Gold Rush Chapter of Trout Unlimited, which is based in Dahlonega. December 2010

The ‘D’ word is creeping into the picture December has arrived and the holidays are upon us. It is truly and great time of year. December is also a very challenging month for meteorologists. We can and do, see wide swings in the temperature. By this time last year we had already seen bitter cold and several snows. This year, with La Nina getting stronger, we will not be seeing the extreme cold settle in and not move out until spring, like we did last year. I don’t know about you, but my heating bill last winter looked like a second mortgage! Our winter will be warmer than average and drier than average. I think I am glad I did not get the boat shrink wrapped this fall. We have a very good chance of seeing 70-degree temperatures this month. I have seen a considerable amount of research on the current La Nina. I have also read some predictions from very prominent meteorologists who are predicting it might last two years! This certainly does not bode well for us. December through April the leaves are off the trees preventing evapotranspiration. (Evapotranspiration is water lost to the atmosphere by two processes-evaporation and transpiration. Evaporation is the loss from open bodies of water, such as lakes and reservoirs, wetlands, bare soil, and snow cover; transpiration is the loss from living-plant surfaces.) For most of the United States, evaporation returns less moisture to the atmosphere than does transpiration. Transpi-

ration from trees and vegetation accounts for about 67 percent of the Glenn water vapor in the atBurns mosphere, while 29 percent results from Lanier evaporation from bodies Outlook of water. Without leaves on trees, the ground can hold more water and will obtain a good soil recharge from rain. However, without much rain, we will not see the soil moisture recharge and the end result is another drought. With the water war between Georgia, Alabama, and Florida still not resolved, levels at Lake Lanier may not recover from the drawdown this fall. Our State Climatologist, David Stooksbury, agrees with this assessment. Our only hope is that our new governor will find an amicable solution with the two other states. As I mentioned at the beginning of my column, we will likely see above average temperatures this winter and spring. This could also be a major contributor to a future drought. The warmer the weather the more evaporation we will see from our area lakes. So, while we will all no doubt find huge savings on our heating bills this winter season, the lack of normal rainfall and above average temperatures will be working in concert to begin our next drought. We are already seeing evidence of this happening in south Georgia where drought conditions are steadily worsening. These drought conditions are continuing to expand to the north. I hope some of these predictions are wrong but the signs are all

Sea Scouts form ‘ships’ near Lake Lanier

Groups are seeking new youth members in Gainesville, Forsyth counties By Pamela A. Keene Youth ages 1 through 20 now have a marine-related scouting program on Lake Lanier. Sea Scouts has recently formed two “ships,” or units – one in Gainesville and one in Cumming/Forsyth County. These coed programs are designed to help young people learn about all things marine. The Gainesville unit, Ship 27, meets at the American Legion Post 7 off Riverside Drive. Started late in the fall, it’s now up to 12 members. “We’ve got a good start and a great project to work on,” said Charles Desaussure, assistant district commissioner for scouting in Gainesville. “We didn’t have a ship here and it’s an excellent way to teach young people about leadership.” Desaussure, who grew up sailing, works with Ship 7 Skipper (adult leader) Ted Golab. The youngsters are currently restoring a 30-foot Sea Ray boat that was donated to the group. In work sessions, they’re cleaning up the boat, refinishing the teak and getting the

boat in tip-top shape in hopes of reselling it to earn money for the group. The unit also has three small sailboats that are being used as teaching tools – a Santana 21, a Santana 10 and a Shock dinghy. Recently, the group went sailing on a big boat on Lake Lanier. For some, it was their first time on the water, and each had a turn at the wheel of the boat owned by Stephan DeBlasio. “They had a great time out on the water,” Desaussure said. “It was an amazing experience for them.” Sea Scouts, associated with the Boy Scouts of America, has been in existence in the United States since 1912. It had its beginnings in Great Britain, when Lord BadenPowell realized that older youth needed an outlet beyond Boy Scouts to learn about boat management and seamanship. Lord Baden-Powell's older brother, Warington, wrote a book called Sea Scouting and Seamanship for Boys that made its way to the United States. Over the years, one of the peo-

ple most responsible for the development of Sea Scouting was Navy Commander Thomas J. Keane. Between 1922 and 1925, he completely revised the Sea Scout program. He wrote the new requirements for advancement and changed the Boy Scout nature of Sea Scout uniforms into the seagoing uniform that Sea Scouts still wear today. Throughout the 1940s, Sea Scouting continued to serve the boys of America who were interested in the lore of the sea. Sea Scouts all over the nation participated in flood relief and community service. The Gainesville group is actively seeking additional members, setting up booths at area high schools and other public events. Desaussure said that the target number for the Gainesville ship is 24 active Sea Scouts. Sea Scouts is open to young men and women ages 13 through 20. They can progress through four levels – Apprentice, Ordinary, Able and Quartermaster. A Quartermaster level can enter military service as an E3.

Sea Scout ship 27 "Flying Dutchmen" taking some R&R aboard sailing vessel Gisela after a hard work day. “At this level, they are able to handle a vessel and plan and navigate a trip,” said Kip Peterson, former commodore of the Atlanta Squadron of Sea Scouts. He currently serves as the chair of the task force for the National Sea Scouts Committee to Marine Sciences and Industry. He is also chair of the national Sea Scouts Underwater Archeology Program. “I look at Sea Scouts as an opportunity for young people,” Peterson said. “When we had the

Atlanta ship there were several members who had high achievements. Four went to the Naval Academy, two were accepted into the Merchant Marine Academy and six have gone on to careers in ocean engineering or marine biology. It’s a wonderful program for young people to build knowledge and confidence.” MORE INFO: www.seascouts.com

There’s nothing like a Lake Lanier Christmas Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. Where are all of Santa’s little helpers when you need them? The summer heat has dissipated and I am at the lake tending to a lot of boat projects before putting her to bed for the winter and there are just not enough hours of daylight in the weekend to even put a dent in all that has to be done. But it was a great summer on the lake. The lake level was up there, and the kids brought their friends along most every weekend to share in the family fun. We did a lot of waterskiing and tubing, and everyone enjoyed riding around on the two Sea Doos I bought at the last boat show hoping it would keep the kids involved with us for another year. Occasionally we had a few of our friends come up for the day, when

Georgia’s angler award program continues Each year, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division recognizes anglers for outstanding and state record catches. Anglers who catch new state records or those who catch a fish that meets or beats a specific weight or length limit for that species (angler award) are eligible for recognition. “Georgia has tremendous opportunities for anglers – making it a great place whether you

are just wetting a hook or trying to reel in a new state record,” says the division’s Fisheries Management Chief John Biagi. Fish must be caught in Georgia during the legal angling season for the species taken in accordance with all fishing laws and regulations. Fish must be caught on sporting tackle and be hooked and landed by the entrant (bush hooks, trot lines, jugs, baskets, nets, etc. are not considered sport-

The fish must meet either minimum weight or length requirements for that particular species, as noted on the minimum eligible weights chart available online or in print at any division Fisheries office in the state. In order for a harvested catch to be recognized, anglers should follow these steps: • Do not clean or freeze the fish • Keep the fish cool, preferably on ice. • Weigh the fish as soon as possible on scales certified accurate to the nearest ounce by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in the presence of two witnesses who are over the age of 18 (witnesses must provide names/addresses and telephone numbers and may not be members of the angler’s immediate family). Scales that meet these requirements typically are found at grocery stores, WRD offices, some marinas. • Take the fish to a division Fisheries Management Office as soon as possible and have it positively identified by a Fisheries biologist or technician. • Complete an application and

Angler award applications must be received by Jan. 15, 2011 for fish caught in 2010. In order for a catch and release fish to be recognized, anglers should follow these steps: • Measure the fish to the nearest inch with a standard, Englishunit ruler or measuring tape. • Submit a clear photograph of the fish for proper identification and length verification (the photo should at least show the entire length of the fish and the ruler or

Owned and operated by Jason Jimenez, who studied in culinary school for four years, the restaurant is already making waves on the dining scene. Jason and his father Sam, who’s been in the Mexican restaurant business for more than 20 years, created the menu that includes puffy tacos, carne asada (marinated steak), fiesta and taco salads. “We make our chips and tamales here,” Sam said. “And we egg-batter our rellenos, poblano peppers that are filled with cheese, chicken, beef or shrimp. Our salad shells are baked not fried, so we have a healthy approach to our menu.” The taco salad comes with a choice of ground beef, fajita beef or chicken. Jason developed the signature desserts that include apple chimichangas, Texas mud pie and vanilla bean flan. The restaurant has the NFL package and big-screen high-definition televisions. The Tamale Factory, located at

2475 S Waterworks Rd, is open seven days a week. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday noon to 9 p.m. MORE INFO: 770-904-4449 www.tftexmexgrille.com

New treetop adventure comes to Lake Lanier Islands By Pamela A. Keene Imagine zipping along at treetop level across the shoreline of Lake Lanier. It’s not your imagination; it’s the new zip lines at Lake Lanier Islands Resort. Opened in November, there are currently two zip experiences with plans for two more courses to be installed by early next year. The first is a mini-zip experience, called The Express Tour, 30 minutes of zipping along four lines and across one sky bridge. The landing decks are lighted for the ultimate in nighttime zipping. The adventure begins at Grand Hall, near the location of Santa’s Village with Magical Nights of Lights. Open nightly from 5 to 10 p.m., the Express gives visitors a taste of things to come. Passage is $20 per person until the first of the year, when the cost per person goes to $30. The second zip line course is a 1.5- to 2-hour ride with seven zip lines and two sky bridges. Open by online reservation, the cost is $50 per person. It begins near Legacy Lodge and will soon be paired with a sister zip line that goes over and under the Legacy.

Construction will begin in January for the Sunset Cove Tour, a 3.5 to 4-hour adventure that will have a long dual zip at the end. It will have 10 to 12 zip lines in varying lengths, plus two to three sky bridges. “We’ve been talking about this for a while,” said Greg Peck, who along with business partner Shane Sullards, operates the Island’s ropes course for corporate team building. “We saw zip lines as something fun for families and for our corporate retreats, and it’s already been a success.”

With a passion for angling, Dayton launches Get Kids Fishing Foundation By Pamela A. Keene Just 18 months ago, Dave Dayton’s vision of getting kids and their families to share fishing experiences was but a dream. Since that time, Get Kids Fishing Foundation has helped kids learn to fish at Lanier and in South Florida, through the support of local fishing organizations. Most recently, the Lanier Striper Club helped Get Kids Fishing host a striper and spotted bass event on Lanier in mid-November, with nearly 75 people – including kids – taking to the water. There were 20 boats with captains fishing in the event, which was won by Clay Weldon. Second place winners, Sam and son Ryan, fished with Joe Kuhr of the Lanier Striper Club. “We had a great time on the water,” said Kuhr, who serves as an adviser to Dayton’s group. “It’s always so much fun to see young people catch fish.” The first annual Get Kids Fishing Tournament was supported by the Lanier Striper Club’s Funfest, with profits from that summer event being donated to Get Kids Fishing. Port Royale Marina served as the headquarters for the

day; Chick-fil-A donated lunches. The Lanier Striper Club has been active in supporting Get Kids Fishing. Other clubs around the lake are working with the group as well, including the Oakwood and North Georgia Striper clubs. These organizations joined with Get Kids Fishing last spring and took 30 kids from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for a fishing trip. “We had 24 boats and people who volunteered their time, donated gas and bait and helped these kids have a great time on the water,” Dayton said. “It’s amazing and incredible what all these groups are doing for us.” Dayton, who works at Home Depot, is seeing his dream become a reality. “I’ve always has a passion for fishing, since I was 5 years old, and I really enjoy seeing youngsters get excited about catching fish,” he said. “It’s good to get them outdoors doing something besides computers and video games.” Get Kids Fishing encourages kids to fish with their families. “We ask that a mom, dad or mentor come out with each youngster,” Dayton said. “I’m frequently sur-

prised that so many people tell me they would love to fish with their families but they just don’t know how. We give them that chance.” Dayton’s group partners with fishing clubs to take kids and their families out on the water in various events throughout the year. Staff, boat/fishing captains and volunteers help them learn the ropes. Plans are in the works for an event next spring for youngsters that are part of programs with the Gwinnett and Hall sheriff’s departments. “We’re always looking for more clubs to partner with, including river and other bass clubs,” he said. “I see this program growing to a national level sooner rather than later and I have no doubt that will happen.” MORE INFO: 770-831-2828; www.getkidsfishing.org Above from left, Clay Weldon, Get Kids Fishing Founder Dave Dayton and Lanier Striper Club President Buck Cannon celebrate Clay's firstplace win at the mid-November fishing event. Right, Sam Touchstone and his 15-year-old son Ryan caught a 22-inch striper to snag second place in the recent Get Kids Fishing event on Lake Lanier.

Elachee Nature Science Center hosts duck stamp art tour

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR’S GREETINGS FROM LAKESIDE!

Elachee Nature Science Center once again is hosting the Georgia Junior Duck Stamp Art Tour through December 23 with 100 winning entries from throughout the state, including several local winners in four different grade levels. The winning entries represent the best of over 701 student entries from 48 different schools throughout the state. The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program (JDS) is an integrated arts and science curriculum that teaches wetlands habitat and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school. Utilizing scientific and wildlife observation, each student researches a selected type of waterfowl to portray in their original artistic design. Each state’s Best of Show winner is entered in the national contest. The purpose of the contest is to promote conservation and preservation of wetlands and waterfowl habitat through arts education. Colin Williams, a 15-year-old from Savannah, was chosen as the 2010 Georgia State Best of Show winner. Williams’ oil painting de-

piction of a Blue-winged Teal duck, entitled “Bobbing Blue” was also entered in the national contest. Prizes and ribbons are also being given for the best student conservation message that expresses the spirit of what they learned while researching and planning for their Duck Stamp Contest artwork entry. This year’s winning conservation message was submitted by 9-year-old Will Newbury from Monroe, “Land, water or air – for the ducks we should care!” Junior Duck Stamps are sold by the U.S. Postal Service for $5 per stamp. Proceeds from the sale of Junior Duck Stamps support conservation education, and provide awards and scholarships for students, teachers, and schools that participate in the program. Stop by to show your support of our talented young artists and look for our local winners from Oakwood, Flowery Branch, Gainesville and the metro-Atlanta area. The Junior Duck Stamp artwork is available for viewing Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. as well as Saturday, November 20th and 27th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission: Adults,

Colin Williams, a 15-year-old from Savannah, won 2010 Georgia State Best of Show for his depiction of a Blue-winged Teal duck. $3; children 2-12, $2; children under 2 and Elachee members, free. This year’s winners and their families can call 770/535-1976 to receive free one-time admission to visit the exhibition and center. The exhibition will also be included with admission to Elachee’s Winter in the Woods Holiday Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Elachee Nature Science Center, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, is one of the premier environmental education centers in Georgia, serving over 35,000 students and an additional 30,000 visitors to the museum and preserve each year. MORE INFO:770-535-1976; www.elachee.org

Longtime Lanier favorite Third Coast Grille closes By Pamela A. Keene After 14 years, Third Coast Grille has closed its doors. Owner Laurie Attaway said that the popular restaurant fell victim to the economy. “We’re an independent restaurant and we just couldn’t compete with the national chains,” she said in a telephone interview the day after closing Third Coast. “We didn’t have deep pockets like they do and it was getting to hard to pay our bills and compete with national restaurants.” Attaway also attributed some of the challenge of keeping Third Coast open to the Gulf oil spill, which jeopardized the oyster supply. “People would come here for

the oysters and they just got too expensive.” Third Coast Grille opened on Holiday Road 14 years ago. It moved into a brand new location, built from the ground up, four years ago and seemed to have a steady stream of customers. The restaurant served its last customers on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. “I’d like to thank all our loyal customers for their support over the years,” Attaway said. “And please, please come and see us at Third Coast Grille has closed. Aqua Terra in downtown Buford.” and Monday through Sunday 5 to Aqua Terra Bistro, also owned 10 p.m. by Attaway, opened 11 years ago. Winter hikes reveal hidden views in the Georgia mountains By Jane Harrison Thousands of leaf lookers flocked to the North Georgia mountains as sourwood leaves turned crimson, hickories shimmered with gold, and bronze crowned the mighty oaks. Now that all the pretty leaves lay crackled and brown underfoot, a stark new beauty awaits, unmasked, along the hiking trails in the Georgia mountains. When the trees disrobe in fall, the naked beauty of ridges, valleys and cold hardy fauna greets hikers on chilly days. In winter, trekkers no longer need to climb to a high elevation bald or rock outcrop to view a stunning panorama. On numerous moderate trails along ridgelines, foot travelers can see adjacent mountaintops and waves of blue peaks in the distance, often on both sides of the trail. The observant hiker can also find loveliness unobscured at close range. Portions of the Appalachian Trail, Benton MacKaye Trail and other trails that tie into these long footpaths across the Georgia mountains provide access to splendid winter views. Along these trail networks and other lower elevation paths, red par-

tridge berries, shiny rhododendron leaves, burgundy-tinted galax, soft-needled hemlock, and occasional stream-fed icicles form a natural holiday display that quietly rivals colored lights and illuminated Santas. A pilgrimage to enjoy the natural sights of the season can be as brief as a day trip from Gainesville. Dockery Lake Trail, north of Dahlonega and about an hour’s drive from Gainesville, provides a look at winter’s stark beauty, from the frost-reddened galax and shiny rhododendron at trailside to the tree-stubbled rounds of Buck Knob and Pigeon Roost mountains in the near east. Walking along the ridge crest, one can see peaks in the Blood Mountain Wilderness near the trail terminus at Miller Gap, where it meets Section 2 of the Appalachian Trail. Waters Creek and her tributaries serenade hikers with a sparkling seasonal carol in the lower elevations. An out-and-back trip on Dockery Lake Trail, approximately 7.2 miles round-trip, might take a moderately fast hiker about four hours, including a 20-minute stop to eat a sandwich, gaze at the scenery, and take a few pictures.

Those desiring a longer hike may continue on the AT toward Woody or Neels Gaps. Another nearby hike that offers spectacular winter scenery accompanied by creek music and flora is the 7-mile loop combining trials at Lake Winfield Scott, Jarrard Gap, AT and Slaughter Creek. The easy to moderate trails also showcase views of the Blood Mountain Wilderness. For an extra viewing bonus, hikers can add the strenuous one-mile climb to the summit of Blood Mountain on the AT for an outstanding look at North Georgia’s alternately rugged and gentle landscape. This view is accessible year-round, but a winter hike to Blood Mountain’s crown is assuredly less sweaty than during warmer months. About an hour northeast of Gainesville, near Helen, hiking trails offer easily accessible winter scenes. An 8.4 mile out-andback hike on the AT Section 4 from Hogpen Gap, on the Richard B. Russell Scenic Parkway, to the trail shelter at Low Gap reveals a Northeast Georgia vista that includes sightings of Amicalola Falls to the West and Yonah Mountain to the southeast, plus

ASPS now offers advanced boating courses to the public By Lisa Beers The Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron is pleased to announce that our advanced boating courses are now being offered to the public! These classes have historically only been open to United States Power Squadron members, but starting in our January session, anyone with an interest in increasing their nautical knowledge may enroll. The January class session will begin on January 24, 2011. Classes run from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Heiskell School in Buckhead. USPS qualified instructors who are also experienced boaters teach the material. There will be three subjects offered in this session: Piloting, Weather, and Marine Communications Systems. Piloting covers coastal navigation using charts and electronic equipment. Students learn to plan courses and determine their position on the water using terrestrial navigation aids. Weather is a comprehensive study of weather systems and patterns. Students learn the causes of weather phenomena and how to predict weather changes using observations and instruments, infor-

The course covers standard VHF radio, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), FCC rules and regulations, and High Seas radio (MF/HF and satellite communications) Family Radio Service transceivers. The course also covers troubleshooting radio installations. Detailed information about each class, fees, and instructions on signing up can be found on our website at www.atlantasboatingclub.com/public-classes. Membership in the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron is not required to take a class, but as an added benefit, students who decide to be-

come members of Atlanta’s Boating Club will receive a discount off their first year’s dues equal to 50 percent of the cost of the course. This special discount will be valid for up to six weeks after course completion. In other news, members and their guests enjoyed a wonderful day on Lake Lanier Saturday November 6 during our annual Fall Leaf Cruise. Despite the fact that the weather turned very cold for the event, we had a fantastic turnout, with 14 boats and 43 people participating. The day started as we gathered at Pier 29 restaurant in Gainesville, with boats docking up and picking up ride-alongs. From there the boats headed north, passing under the Dawsonville Highway bridge, then Thompson Bridge Road, up into Little River to raft-up. A few boats adventured up to the end of Wahoo Creek as others began setting anchor and joining up side by side. By the time all of our the boats were rafted up, the sun was out and the temperature was very comfortable, a glorious day indeed! After a couple of hours we stared the cruise back down to Pier 29 for dinner together.

ASPS members and guests raft up during November's fall cruise.

Our latest general membership meeting was also a blast, featuring a fascinating presentation by ASPS member Haim Zuckerman who told of his adventures cruising the Adriatic Sea while based out of Croatia. Haim oversaw the building of their latest vessel, and he had many helpful (and highly entertaining) insights into this process as well. We encourage you to look for the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron booth at the 2011 Atlanta Boat Show January 13-16 at the Georgia World Congress Cen-

ter in downtown Atlanta. We will be featuring an interactive fire safety exhibit that’s not only educational but a lot of fun. Despite the shorter days and colder weather, winter still brings many opportunities for education and fun in the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron. Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron members have access to advanced boating classes, social events on and off the water year round, fun and informative monthly membership meetings, and more.

RESURRECTED FROM THE FIRES OF HELL Dresden is a showcase of modern Germany Instead of red roses, the glowing fires of hell descended from the heavens into the middle of the old, medieval city of Dresden, Germany after 10 p.m. on the night of St. Valentine’s Day in 1945. Within hours, the elegance and 2,000-year history of Germanic tribes and the best examples of Baroque style architecture in Europe were burned to the ground by bombs from British aircraft. With the war almost over and the Russian forces within 50 miles of the city, stories abound as to why Dresden was bombed at all. Since Dresden was still intact so close to the end of the war, some say that Churchill did it to give the English people closure for all the bombs the Germans dropped on London. Others claim that it was still a strategic target that saved Russian soldiers from a house to house battle in Dresden, but in truth, we will never know why this cultural work of art was destroyed. To make things worse, after World War II Dresden became a major part of the Russian-dominated German Democratic Republic (East Germany). This puppet government held back free trade, allowed no religion, and kept the people in bondage for more than 40 years. Instead of reconstructing the Altstadt (Old Town) and the famous Frauenkirche (Church of Our

During the time when Vladimir Putin was the KGB (Secret Service) chief in Dresden, civil disobedience began spreading throughout the area, and within a couple of years, Germany was reunified. This brought tremendous changes to Dresden, including reconstruction of the Frauenkirche as a symbol of reconciliation between East and West Germany. Even before the original Frauenkirche was finished in 1743, it became famous in 1736 when Johann Sebatstian Bach gave a recital with the church organ in December of that year. After completion, the unique dome was similar to Michelangelo’s dome at St. Peter’s Basil-

lica in Rome and stood 96 meters above the Old Town. It became known to the Germans as Die Steinerne Glocke (The Stone Bell), and could be seen from vantage points throughout the Elbe River Valley. Using primarily privately raised funds, the restoration of the Frauenkirche was completed in 2005, and is today a beautiful reminder of the resilience of the people of Dresden. This historic church is the centerpiece of Neumarkt Square, which is a part of the urban renewal that brought the Old Town back to life. Another important part of restoring Dresden was the connection over the Elbe River from the Old Town to the New Town. The bridge known as the Augustusbrucke was first constructed in 1727 and later reconstructed in 1907. It is still a picturesque part of the Dresden community, especially when almost 200-year-old paddlewheelers are seen on the river. Despite being the capital city to the state of Saxony, Dresden has a multitude of interesting places to visit and photograph.

is the Innside Hotel. They can be contacted online at: innside.dresden@solmelia.com. Witnessing and experiencing how far the wonderful, welcoming people of Dresden have progressed since the reunification of Germany is almost beyond belief, which makes this old city a “must see” on any trip to Europe! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

One of these is the Zwinger Palace with its several museums and more than 2,000 paintings, including the coveted Sistine Madonna by Raphael. Another highlight is the Semper Opera House which was burned down in 1869 and again during the bombing in 1945. This exact replica was one of the few buildings that was restored during the Russian occupation, and only classic opera is performed within its walls. The history and beauty of Dresden and the surrounding countryside of Saxony is more than enough to make this section of Germany a prime vacation destination. Perhaps the best place to stay near all the action of the Altstadt, the Elbe The Frauenkirche in Neumarkt Square in River, and the famous Frauenkirche Dresden's Alstadt (Old Town).

Where am I? Trip planning can help out By Steve Johnson Ever asked yourself that profound question “Where Am I?’ while boating on the lake? I have at times. And I am a trained and licensed navigator. OK, some of you have the latest in Johnson GPS navigation, radar, depth, and communication equipment on your vessel, and at a glance you can see the location and the surrounding electronic charted area around you … but what happens

to that capability when the equipment fails, or even worse, it starts giving you the wrong information? From my observation and previous experience, one of the most striking differences I see on the lake compared to the coastal boating environment is that you are surrounded by a tree lined shore, sprinkled with beautiful homes, marinas, docks, and parks making the shore sometimes look the same or visually redundant, to an unfamiliar boater. Without local knowledge it can become a daunting task to find your way. Like

professional harbor pilots, a lot of you know exactly where you are at all times when on your boats because you travel the area often. But visitors to the lake do not share this advantage. To help remedy this situation and assist in the preparation for a day on the water I recommend the use of “trip planning.” This is a crucial and required step in successful navigation on all military and commercial vessels and it helps answer the question, “Where Am I?” during the voyage. During my nautical career my task as a navigation officer was to know when,

Corps begins prescribed fires for environmental benefits The US Army Corps of Engineers began prescribed burns on Corps property on December 1. These will continue through the end of February. Supervised by park rangers, the fires will take place along selected areas of the shoreline or within parks away from residential areas. Rangers will be on site for the duration of each fire. If burns are done inside parks, the park will be closed for the day. Signs will be posted at park entrances to notify the public about the prescribed burns. Safety is always a concern and the Corps continues to undergone training and education to prepare for this project. The Corps will also be working with various partners in the areas where burns are taking place. There are many benefits to prescribed fires, including the reduction of forest fuels, such as leaves and pine needles that accumulate on the forest floor. In addition, prescribed burns reduce the competition between various

Craig Sowers US Army Corps of Engineers

forest plant species. These fires eliminate the low-value poor quality understory species that compete for water and nutrients with the more desirable plants that provide food for wildlife or have timber value. Lands that are burned in this manner have improved wildlife habitats, breaking up the forest into burned and unburned areas. There’s an increase of diversity for a wider range of wildlife species. Burning also increases sources for food for wildlife, opening up areas for grasses and forbs that benefit grazing animals, such as deer. Fire is a natural process in a

forest ecosystem and prescribed fire is a way to return this natural process to our forests in a knowledgeable, controlled manner. Over the years, neighboring jurisdictions have conducted prescribed burns around Lake Lanier on properties that they manage, but these burns have not been done by the Corps in recent memory. Forsyth County has burned in Shady Grove Campground. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has also conducted prescribed burns. If the public sees smoke coming from Corps’ property, they can call the Corps office to check if a fire is being conducted that day. And, as a side note, for public safety, burning on Corps’ property by private citizens is not allowed under any circumstances. For more information, call the Corps of Engineers at 770-9459531. where, and what I was going to see – well before that time arrived. I know utilizing this technique of preparation is not sometimes practical on a day of pleasure boating but general planning before you depart will improve safety and reinforce your knowledge of the area. There are plenty of chart books and other references, and additionally the use of the internet for real time information, including weather, to enhance your day. Even for those that are always on the lake I would suggest looking at the charts before you go and if nothing else it serves to add to your expertise as a boater. When I teach Sea School for license renewal I often see experienced mariners that have become somewhat reliant on all the latest in technology. These advanced systems serve the boater extremely well, but it is still a great idea to understand and practice the basics

of piloting, paper charts, and good practical navigation. It is also required for obtaining or renewing US Coast Guard licenses if that is your goal. The use of “trip planning” is one of many ways to improve your all around boating experience and safety. Additional training, whether for state or federal license, or to just improve your boating skills, can be found in a large variety of educational materials, schools, organizations, and programs that can serve your specific needs. Information is the key to success in the marine world and continuing your nautical education will help you achieve the absolute best in your boating life and serve you for years to come. • Hikes Continued from Page 46 on the forest road back to Ga. 60 provides glimpses of surrounding mountains. Most of these trails involve moderate elevation gain, requiring at least moderate exertion. But, a path into winter splendor can be as nearly as level as an airport runway. A short (5-mile round trip) easy hike on the

Raven Cliffs Trail, also on the Richard B. Russell Scenic Parkway, offers winter wonders along Dodd Creek. The bright reds of hollies and partridge berries amidst Christmas tree-like evergreens and glistening icicles dripping above the creek greet hikers with a setting prettier than a holiday card.

Trail Information: Some trails where hikers can enjoy spectacular winter views include: • Appalachian Trail Section 4, Hogpen Gap to Low Gap Shelter, 8.4 miles round-trip, located on Richard B. Russell Scenic Parkway (Ga. 348 North) near Helen • Dockery Lake Trail, 6.8 miles round trip, located on Forest Service Road 654, off Ga. 60 north of Dahlonega • Lake Winfield Scott, Jarrard Gap, Appalachian Trail, Slaughter Creek Loop, 7 miles, located on Ga. 180 between Ga. 60 and U.S. 129, near Suches • Benton MacKaye Trail, Section 5 6-mile loop from Wilscot Gap to Brawley Mountain, located on Ga. 60 near Morganton • Raven Cliffs Trail, 5 miles round trip, located on Richard B. Russell Scenic Parkway (Ga. 348) near Helen

Hiking tips: • Know your route and allow sufficient time for it. • Do not overextend your abilities. • Tell someone your hiking plans. • Dress appropriately. Be prepared for sudden and extreme weather changes. Dress for the weather to avoid hypothermia from exposure to cold, rain, or heat. Wear proper footwear. • Carry sufficient water and food and first aid supplies. • Hike with a companion. - From Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, www.georgia-atclub.org

Chew softly around loved ones and don’t forget the hungry The holiday season is upon us again. And, of course, at some point in time, I will be sitting down in front of a great mountain of food. That’s the good part. The bad part is that I will be eating it in a sound proof booth in another room. It’s been coming on for quite a while now. Technically, it started with my marriage to a wonderful woman eighteen years ago. But it really didn’t accelerate until the birth of the first of our three daughters. Of course, each birth was a special moment, but unbeknownst to me, there was something really special about my oldest daughter – she was born with super sonic hearing. Her special “gift” didn’t actually reveal itself right away. In fact, I didn’t really hear about it until she became a teenager. Can’t say that I remember the actual moment of revelation, but I recall it was at mealtime. “Dad, what are you doing?” Although that was a typical question raised on a near constant basis by my daughters about practically everything thing that I did,

factory, I decided that it would be better for all of mankind to remove myself from the dinner table than to admit that I was chewing my mashed potatoes too loud. So this holiday season, I’ll be eating in a sound proof booth in another part of the house entirely. And she has vowed to puree my entire menu for me and to provide a straw. On the up side, she did grudgingly agree to let me hold the remote control. Although I sometimes bother my daughter with the way I eat, having enough to eat has never been a problem. Thankfully, I don’t know what it feels like to be without. But even in the best of times, and in the land of plenty, there are people who are not getting enough to eat, who are underfed and under nourished. In other words, this holiday season, there will be far too many who will not know or see a mountain of food except in their dreams.

They will be the young, the old, and the out of work. They will be among us and without us. They will be your neighbors and your friends, and the strangers that we hurry past on the street. And none of them will have any supersonic skills to fall back on at mealtime. When you sit down this year for the many celebrations of the season, don’t forget those left without. If you’d like to help, you can. Make a contribution to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. And chew softly around those you love. For more information on feeding those in need, contact the Georgia Mountain Food Bank at 770-967-0075, or visit www.gamountainfoodbank.org.
