Existing record is sufficient to resolve water dispute, judge says
By Jane Harrison Special Master Paul J. Kelly, Jr. displayed the expedience and dispatch he’s known for in his November case management order to two long-time water foes. His Nov. 6 order not only informs Georgia and Florida he needs no additional discovery to resolve the long-time water dispute, he also instructs their attorneys how to format footnotes, headings and quotations in responses to his queries. The Special Master’s latest public entry in the official case docket scuttles Florida’s request to submit more evidence that it suffered harm due to Georgia’s alleged over-consumption of water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system, on which Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir. Instead, Kelly insists that the existing record is sufficient. He adds that the “likely additional value of such evidence is outweighed by the significant cost and delay that will accompany producing and presenting it.” Kelly’s halt on evidence-gathering is just what Georgia attorneys sought in an earlier brief
which summarized the case begun when Florida sued Georgia in Oct. 2013. An 18-month discovery period produced 7.2 million pages of documents, 90 interrogatories, 400 requests for evidence admission, 130 subpoenas, and 69 depositions, according to Georgia attorneys. They assert that “no additional discovery is needed because the voluminous record in this case is more than sufficient to answer all questions posed by the Supreme Court.” Kelly agreed. He ordered litigants to cite already recorded evidence and testimony to answer a series of questions by Jan. 31. He wants states’ responses to come from evidence submitted under his predecessor, Ralph Lancaster, who recommended the Supreme Court deny Florida’s claims. Instead, the court in June remanded the case back to the special master and chose Kelly to take it on. “Given the voluminous record in the case resulting from virtually unlimited discovery and a lengthy trial, additional discovery will only lengthen the proceedings, delay the outcome, and increase litigation costs. There is
ample evidence in the record pertaining to Georgia’s water use in the ACF basin,” Kelly writes. He wants Florida to provide specifics about how it “suffered a substantial invasion of rights” and harm from Georgia’s water use upstream. He, like Lancaster, put the burden of proof on Florida to produce “clear and convincing evidence that the benefits of an equitable apportionment decree substantially outweigh any harm that might result.” He wants facts about what caused salinity in Apalachicola Bay, which requires fresh water to nourish oyster fisheries that support the region’s
economy. Additionally, he wants numbers on stream flow volume, costs, and conservation measures from both states. He limits the number of pages each state can submit: 20 pages of findings and conclusions, 40 pages of supplemental papers, due by the end of this month, and another potential 20 pages of response briefs by Feb. 28. The homework assignment gets more specific: “All text must be double-spaced, but quotations more than two lines long may be indented and single-spaced, and headings and footnotes may be single spaced. Font size should be 13-point type.”

His move with his wife Laurel and their children included relocating his business and making more changes. “As my injuries got worse over time, I realized that I couldn’t dive, but I can still supervise,” he said. “We came up here and I decided to move all our equipment up here and start over.” His new business, Bay-Assist, has embraced Northeast Georgia. The company is donating time and services to the community, including providing its skid-steer to the recent Lake Lanier Association Shore Sweep, and assisting with the removal of derelict docks and other work. By Pamela A. Keene In a flash, John Webb’s life changed forever. As a soldier in Iraq serving in the Army, he was hit by a chlorine bomb in 2007. Today, he’s on the waiting list for a double-lung transplant. He’s also owner of Bay-Assist, a marine services, grading and a dive salvage company that got its start in St. Thomas. Webb hasn’t let his injuries slow him down. Once he left the Army, he returned to Savannah, where he had graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University (now part of Georgia Southern University). He had worked with an engineering firm in Savannah before joining the Army, but he decided to take a break. “You can sit around and mope all day,” he said, “or you can get out, work and enjoy life.” For Webb, getting out included leaving Savannah and moving to St. Thomas. There in 2011, he started a charter business, taking tourists on day trips, lobstering and spear-fishing. “I quickly realized there was a need for commercial divers in the marine construction business so I shifted my focus,” he said. “We designed and built sea-water intakes for hotels, rebuilt docks, including a major upgrade from a dock for 1,000-foot, 250-ton per foot design load cruise ships to one that can handle 1,400-foot, 1,000ton per foot design load ships.” The company expanded to the Gulf Coast and globally. Last year, he found out that he would need a double-lung trans-

The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant
A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides Lake level: Down .61 feet Clarity: Creeks stained, main lake clear Temperature: 50s Bass fishing The spoon bite in the timber has been the bomb for us recently! We have had some great days, including one half day trip when we boated 55 fish, with the best five going 17 pounds. Look in the 30- to 45-foot range for the spoon fish, but that can change any day in terms of the depth they are holding based on the bait. Look for the fish to be tighter to the timber on sunny days, and roaming more in those ditches on cloudy days. We have also still been working shallower rocky points with crankbaits, jigs, and worms in the mornings and sometimes throughout the day. When the fish are active, the crankbaits are hard to beat. Try using a deeper diving crankbait, like the Spro Little John DD on those shallow points and keep the bait digging on the bottom. You can cover water quickly and find the aggressive fish. Also, with the cooling water temperatures, look for the jerk
bait bite to pick up soon as well in those same areas, as well as back in pockets. When the bite slows, switch to a worm and jig presentation in those same areas but back out from the shallows. The chasing fish have been in 10 feet or less, and the worm and jig fish have been more in the 12- to 20-foot range, but we have found them to be very shallow at times as well. Look for those worm and jig fish to show up deeper now on some days as well, based on the water continuing to cool. Focus on the shallower rock points in both the mouths of creeks as well as the main lake. Also the mouths of creek pockets in the first half of the major creeks have been productive as well. The creek ditches are holding some fish now in shallower water and we have been catching some on the SuperSpin down in the ditches on some days so count that bite has officially started and ready for training! This is the time to learn those winter patterns: ditch fishing, timber fishing, and spoon fishing. This report brought to you by

There are fish scattered from Vann’s Tavern to Little River and from the river channel to the back of the creeks. The key is to find the areas with the greatest concentration of bait. Look for deep bait from 30 to 50 feet over a 50- to 100-foot bottom. When you locate a high concentration of this deep bait target any fish you mark with herring and medium shiners on down rods. Fish your down rods above, into and under the bait. Also, look for shallow bait from surface to 20 feet and target these areas with free lines and planner boards. Vary the depth of your lines with split shots and distance behind the boat and planner boards. The umbrella rig is working in the areas with shallow bait and makes and excellent search tool. Set your rigs at 120 feet back and pull at 2.8 to 3 mph. Focus on a depth of 30 to 60 feet. We have seen some surface activity early

morning so keep your eyes on the water and target these areas with a buck tail jig and small spoons. Flat Creek, Balus Creek and Two Mile Creek are good places to start your search. This report is from Big Fish on Guide Service, 404 561-2564 or www.bigfishonguide.com. Crappie fishing Fishing remains good to excellent. We prefer fishing with limited breeze on the water. Late fall on Lanier brings challenges to crappie fishing. Obviously, it can be cold, which can make fishing uncomfortable. To top that off, leaves in the water in the area you want to cast, can impact your aim. So, my first tip is to dress in layers to help keep you warm, but also to aid in staying comfortable with the ability to shed layers if the sun or increased activity warms you up. My second tip is to use heavier jigs in windy conditions. We typically use 1/32 or 1/24 ounce jigs on normal days. On windy days we will use 1/16 ounce jigs or tie two 1/32 ounce rigs on one rod to help get the bait where we want it against the wind. There’s no magic to dealing
with floating leaves. You just have to be patient and know that you may have to cast again … and sometimes again … and again to get your jig past the leaves in the spot you want. But this is still one of my favorite times of the year to be out on the water. Pleasure boaters and PWCs have been winterized and are mainly off the lake. Hunters are chasing deer and other prey in the woods. That leaves the fall colors surrounding the lake to the fishermen. So we have to deal with some challenges, but it is definitely worth it! My favorite jig right now is still Bobby Garland. If you prefer hair jigs, Jiffy Jigs are my choice. Always remember that crappie relate to structure, so watching for and finding natural bait around structures on the lake is going to lead you to a fun catch! Brenau students team up to mark storm drains around Lanier

By Jane Harrison A submerged grid of pipes, culverts and conduits may be out of sight, but catchy new markers around Gainesville urge residents and passersby to keep in mind that what’s on the surface ultimately flows into Lake Lanier. Twenty-Five Brenau University freshmen spent a sunny October afternoon affixing flashy disks adjacent to storm water drains in the Academy, Washington, Prior, Boulevard and Spring Street area to let people know that what goes into the drains eventually ends up in the lake. The markers, which sport a fish illustration in the middle and “No Dumping, Drains to Lake” along the circumference, aim to educate people that effluent and pollutants that flow into the storm drains get washed into their main source of drinking water. “It’s like connecting the dots,” said Dale Caldwell, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, who coordinated with Brenau’s Freshman Seminar and City of Gainesville water resources staff to supervise the project. The effort aims to help people connect street side storm drains and parking lot grates with the water source that
quenches their thirst, supports wildlife, and floats their boats. In the Brenau area, run off flows through underground creeks and pipes that don’t follow the lay of the land, Caldwell said. Pavement and buildings long ago altered the natural drainage into a complicated system that flows into Limestone Creek, a northern tributary of Lake Lanier. Gainesville Stormwater Coordinator Jennifer Flowers distributed maps to students showing dozens of drains on and around campus. “A lot of people don’t realize the water that goes into them is not treated,” she said. The stickers “raise awareness about where it goes,” she said. The city’s Department of Water Resources secured funding for the stickers. Flowers said she hopes more local groups will volunteer to put the markers in other places around town. She demonstrated the rather easy task, showing students how to scuff pavement with a steel brush, squeeze glue onto markers, and press them into place. Three groups set off with maps to attach markers near dozens of drains on campus and nearby sidewalks. Lila Weaver, official with the
college of Business and Communication, said the Freshmen Seminar segues students from high school to college by giving them opportunities to volunteer in the community. She, Caldwell and Flowers accompanied groups on the mission. Students shared the work, with one doing the scraping, another squeezing the glue, and a third putting the sticker in place. Attaching each sticker took about five minutes. Within half an hour, it was hard to find an unmarked storm drain near campus. Flowers said the markers should stay in place 25 years. Start a new tradition at Jan. 1 Polar Bear Plunge By Jane Harrison Ever pledge to try something new every day? Blair Hickerson has. And the first day of 2019 she’ll plunge right into that resolution. Hickerson, director of the 21st Polar Bear Plunge at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, hopes other families will join hers Jan. 1 in starting a new holiday tradition by jumping into the cold waters of Lake Lanier. “My two sons are in high school now and I’m hoping we’ll start something new now that they’ve aged out of old family traditions” like sitting in Santa’s lap. “It’s something we can do together for the next 10 years,” she said. For many lake-area residents, the first day baptism is already on their to-do list. Some, like Gainesville city councilman George Wangemann do it every year. Some dress up in silly costumes (chickens, Father Time, and Super Man) to start the year with a frigid laugh. Show-offs do fancy flips, swan dives or canopeners. Old and young take the dip. The best costume, most impressive jump, biggest splash and oldest and youngest jumpers get accolades and awards. All participants get a commemorative Polar Bear T-Shirt, bowl of homemade chili, cup of hot chocolate and a warm reception at the LLOP boathouse, where they can also take a hot shower to thaw out. The Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club initiated the rite of passage 20 years ago to raise funds to purchase boats and supplies.

Through the decades, winter hardy polar bears have cracked through ice-coated water, leaped into the foggy unknown and shivered in blowing snow. Other times, scantily clad jumpers basked in bright sunlight with temperatures in the 50s. LCKC had to postpone the plunge in 2016 after record December rains flooded the docks. The club has moved it to the deep channel in the shadow of the Olympic tower during drought years. There’s no way to forecast what 2019 will bring, but its safe to predict that the rainy autumn assures there’ll be plenty of water to jump in behind the boathouse. “I hope it’s not like last year,” said Hickerson. Snow and cruel cold kept many would-be participants warm at home. The best

years have brought more than 200 to the LLOP docks. “Seventy-five would be great,” she said. Traditionally, participants line up on the dock behind the boathouse and an announcer calls groups or individuals for their fleeting moment of fame. Some hold hands. Others dive solo. A quick splash, a flailing of the arms, and a grimace later and they’re clambering up the ladder into a fluffy towel or bathrobe. Hopefully, they brought those, along with some comfortable dry clothes. Hickerson confessed 2019 will be her first plunge. “I expect it will be cold and invigorating.” She also expects to have a good hair day. “I am good about jumping in the lake without getting my hair wet.”

Parade of Boats fast approaching; register now
By Pamela A. Keene In the true spirit of the holidays, this year’s Parade of Boats will sparkle from start to finish. Houseboats, cruisers and sailboats – all decked out in twinkling lights, Christmas trees and holiday finery – will make their way across Lake Lanier to Margaritaville at Lanier Islands on Saturday, December 8. Fireworks will cap off the evening over the snow-covered License to Chill Snow Island. Parade sponsors are also awarding a new Yamaha Wave Runner through a ticketed giveaway.

The Yamaha giveaway is made possible by Yamaha and Park Marine. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased online at the event’s website. Spectators coming through the gates at Lanier Island will receive discounted admission to the islands when they bring a new unwrapped toy to be donated to Toys for Tots. The event also raises funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the Hall County Sheriffs Youth Home. “It’s going to be a great event,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, which sponsors the event to raise money and toys for children’s’ charities
in North Georgia. “With all the activities at License to Chill Snow Island and the big fireworks show, it will be a fun evening to say the least.” Spectators can view the decorated boats as they approach the docks at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. Once the boats park in their slips or moorings, visitors can walk the docks to see the boats up close and chat with the crews. Boat owners will gather in front of their home marinas (or at the marina of their choice for people with private docks) to be judged. Then they will be marshalled across the lake to Margaritaville for final judging of the top marina winners. Prizes will be awarded for the

A parasail is a specially cut parachute that is designed to be towed behind a boat in the fashion of water skis, except instead of being on the surface of the water you’re at the end of a tow rope about 150 feet above it! Back in the early 1980s very few people had seen or even heard about a parasail until one was featured in a James Bond movie. (I may have mentioned that my brother owns a marina and bar on the Jersey Shore that is THE place to go in the summertime and during the winter attracts a faithful gang of locals somewhat similar to the old “Cheers.”) The gang at the marina saw the movie and we all thought it would be a cool toy to play with. My brother Hank and I were both single at the time, so we thought it would also be a way to attract members of the opposite sex. We located an outfit in California that made parasails and ordered one. It seemed to take forever to arrive and when it finally got there it was the beginning of April and the water was still pretty cold. Since I was the only one with a wetsuit that fit me, I as chosen to take the first

site and everyone thought I was a celebrity, however undeserving. After a couple of beers, we decided to take another flight. The takeoff went much more smoothly than the first and I was beginning to feel that we could do this as regular entertainment sending the entire gang aloft once the weather got warmer. As I confidently sailed along 150 feet above the water, I noticed that my brother Tim, driving the boat, was not paying attention to the channel markers and was heading into shallow water. I tried signaling and yelling as loud as I could to no avail and the next thing I knew the boat ran aground stopping instantly. Now a parasail is designed to hold a person aloft while being towed forward. When the forward towing force stops, it does not have enough lift to keep the person up and comes down like a stone! This wouldn’t have been a problem if we had been over deep water, but it was my luck to land in 18 inches of water on a top of a sandbar! OOF! I gave it the classic parachute landing hitting with my feet, ankles, knees, hips and shoulders and rolling to absorb the shock, but it
still feels like I’m two inches shorter than I used to be! We decided to call it a day and headed back to the launch site to pick up the gang, only to find two Marine Police boats waiting for us. They had gotten about a dozen phone calls from concerned citizens reporting everything from a plane crash to a paratrooper invasion! (This happened to be during the Falkland Islands War when Argentina invaded the British owned islands in the south Atlantic). We told them we weren’t Argentinians, we were Pollocks which seemed to satisfy them, but then they wanted to inspect the boat to see if we had enough life vests. When everyone told them that the gang had been ferried there in two trips they let us alone. Now back to the marina and bar for a handful of Advils washed down with copious amounts of Irish Coffee! Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

A long, cold, wet winter on the horizon As we moved into mid-October and temperatures across north Georgia were still in the 80s and 90s, my colleagues and I were wondering if autumn temperatures would ever arrive. In November, all that changed as we went directly from summer heat to winter cold, just like last year. Something else has also been occurring, pretty much on a weekly basis as we moved through November. We have seen a “wedge” of cold air about every four to five days blast into Georgia. If you are not familiar with a “cold air wedge,” let me explain. The official terminology is a CAD, or Cold Air Damming. When cold high pressure moves out of Canada and then temporarily stalls in the mid-Atlantic or near New England, it will send down a very cold, shallow, and dense layer of cold air. Since it is shallow, the northeast wind drives it south with the southern spine of the Appalachian Mountains acting like a dam, funneling it in to Northeast Georgia. The cold air gets trapped and is “wedged” in place. At the same time, above the wedge, around 5,000 feet, we have a southwest wind coming in right off the Gulf of Mexico. This results in clouds, rain, mist, and drizzle. In the winter, it will often result in ice! You’ll recall on November 13-15, we had three straight days of rain, totaling more than 5-6 inches in some areas. With temperatures in the 40s we had no issues other than flooding. Imagine if it
was winter and we had freezing temperatures! We would have a major Glenn ice storm that would be nothing short of cataBurns strophic. I am sure you have Lanier seen the NOAA Winter Outlook Weather Outlook. If not, NOAA gives us a 50/50 shot at above or below average temperatures. I am not buying that. I have seen many signals that are telling me we are going to have another brutal and long winter. What do I mean by a long winter? Remember last winter and how cold it stayed through much of spring? Area farmers really got hit hard with several freezes going into the growing season. I think the same thing might happen this winter. We may actually see the coldest temperatures of the winter in February or even March! Would not be at all surprised if freezing temperatures last well into April. I am not trying to spread gloom and doom but I certainly want you to be prepared. Ice is going to be a major concern for us in the normally colder locations around the Lake Lanier basin. Gainesville along with Athens are the areas that can bear the full wrath of ice storms. If you are wondering about snow, I believe it would not be out of the question to see frequent flurries and possibly several measurable snows between December and April. Although there are some signs of a warmer early December. What makes me think we will see frequent snows? How many storms have we seen evolve

Flat Creek restoration project nears completion
By Pamela A. Keene Flat Creek, which runs into Lake Lanier, has a new lease on life. The restoration of nearly 1,800 linear feet of the creek that flows through an industrial area of Gainesville is expected to be complete by the end of this year. “The project will take care of the damaging run-off along Flat Creek that was causing sedimentation,” said Don Dye, assistant director of the department of water for Gainesville. The banks of the creek have been lowered and recontoured to reduce the steepness; 2,000 tons of rip-rap will help reduce erosion. “We’ve also done extensive planting along the banks to help slow the water down and cut down on erosion,” he said. “The roots will help hold the soil in place over time.” Native plants installed include 600 shrubs, 220 maple trees and 10,000 live willow stakes that will root and grow. A number of rock structures were built from more than 300 tons of rock to encourage oxy-

genation of the stream water. Dye said that the project was a long time coming, with initial conversations taking place 10-12 years ago. It was tabled because of the Great Recession. Issues with easements and funding had to be resolved as well. The work began in January
2018 and is expected to be complete by the end of the year. In all the city’s cost will be approximately $834,000. Clean Water Consultants handled the project, which was also a partnership between the City of Gainesville and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Time to winterize your boat so it will be ready to go next season. Go to your computer log that lists the items to be checked on your particular boat. Outboards and inboard/outboards need to have the props removed and check for mono-filament line on the prop shaft which can cause seal wear and cause lower unit oil leak and water to get in the gear case. That can cause considerable damage and failure. Also, if the prop has grounded send it off to be reconditioned. An undamaged prop can increase efficiency where your boat will operate as designed. Your fuel system filters and water separators should be checked and cleaned. Add fuel tank additives to keep fuel clean. Oil should be changed along with a new filter. Check electronics, repair or replace those not working properly. Grease all steering

Those who keep their boats in the water need to haul them at least once a year and clean growth or barnacles if in salt water. Remember to log any replacements or special service to your boat so you will have a record of it. Check out the U.S.C.G. Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadron for boating classes, which upon completion you could receive a 10 percent discount on your boating insurance and you will be a more qualified captain. During the winter months you might want to trailer your boat to Florida to cruise and sight see. Both coasts offer some ideal cruising destinations. Remember, keeping your boat in top condition will ensure safe cruising, so keep your boat and equipment in top condition and you won’t need to call for a tow. Be courteous and practice safe boating.

She Sheds: Today’s answer to yesterday’s man caves

OK. We may be entering some dangerous territory here as I write about a new gardening trend, but bear with me. For years the guys have had their man caves, complete with big-screen TVs, surround sound and a license to have their “sacred private space.” Now it’s our turn. When I tell my friends that my husband Rick is building a garden house for me, people immediately ask me if I’ve seen the insurance commercial about the She Shed that burns down. That’s not really the way to start a conversation. Gardening, and all that goes with it, is a very serious topic. A brand-new book just came about from Quarto Publishing Group, which specializes in all kinds of gardening books. It is called “She Shed Style,” written by Erika Kotite, who also authored “She Sheds.” The hard-cover, full-color book is gorgeous, but even more importantly, it’s filled with all kinds of decorating and DYI ideas to create a personalized She Shed that reflects your personality and style. From building an open-sided potting shed with loads of windows and plenty of shelf space for working, to designing a home-

away-from-home with room for napping, reading or pursuing a hobby, Kotite has captured the essence of all things stylish. She delves into the architectural choices of She Sheds, ones that can range from a simple three-sided cubby in the garden to elaborate stand-alone rooms furnished with antiques, hand-made floor coverings and chandeliers. A She Shed can be as simple as a big-box retailer out-building to a custom-built all-glass cottage. Add an overhanging roof of four to six feet for storing garden tools, or create a patio covered by a pergola and draped with outdoor café lights. Her book illustrates how to incorporate work space for journal-
ing or letter writing, without taking up too much space. Create seating areas that encourage conversation, and add storage by building shelves above windows that can also be used to display your treasures. Hang colorful glass balls or floats from the ceiling at varying heights to provide dimension. Add interior space dividers using louvered folding doors as screens or drape soft fabric to hide clutter. Consider putting in a wood floor and stenciling it to create the look of brick or tile. Window treatments, if you even choose to use them, can be made of dishtowels knotted on wooden sticks or branches. Take an old suitcase, cover it with brightly colored fabric and you’ve got an ottoman. Furnishings can serve several purposes. A table with a shelf below can hold baskets to store supplies. A trunk or chest, repurposed, distressed and painted with chalk paint, can be both a coffee table and additional storage. Shop consignment stores, antique shops and yard sales to find fun and whimsical items. Kotite added an old mantel and a couple of mirrors in one design. In an-
other, she used broken china to create colorful stepping stones outside. Old doors can be retrofitted to provide a welcoming entrance. I found a great Tiffany- style hanging light fixture that’s perfect above a wicker rocker in my little house. Another shopping trip yielded glass containers that I can use for flower arrangements. Souvenirs from my travels, such as a glass ball etched with a shamrock from Ireland, will also have a home in my She Shed. My She Shed has A She Shed. a name. It’s Rose Cottage, to go along with our having named our home Rose Lane in memory of my mother, whose name was Rosa. We have dozens of rose bushes, many of them hybrid tea cutting roses that I share with friends from May through midNovember.

While the game won’t be played until February 3, officials, sponsors, the National Football League, broadcasters and – the list goes on – are coming into Atlanta several weeks before the big game. Designing for entertaining; planning with space and function in mind
The holidays are officially here and that means it’s hosting and entertaining season. This is the time of year when you really get to see how your home’s layout works and what might need to be changed. When thinking about entertaining in your home, the two most important things to think about are space and function. Do you have enough space to host guests and is that space functional? For those that have overnight guests, you of course must think about sleeping arrangements. But, for everyone, the most important areas to think about are the kitchen and living/entertaining spaces. These are the areas where you and your guests will spend most of your time. When thinking about your space and a possible redesign or remodel, the first question to think about is: what is your entertaining style? Some people have large gatherings of friends and family, while others prefer more intimate groups. Will your guests stay inside, or do you want to use exterior entertaining space, as well? This, of course, also depends on the weather. Do you like to host formal din-

ner parties for the holidays or are your gatherings more informal? Will your guests be bringing food for a potluck meal or will you be cooking or having the meal catered? These are all important to ask yourself to determine what type of space you need. The best space for entertaining is a space that matches your style of entertaining. For those that like to host large, informal gatherings, an open concept plan would make the most sense. An open concept plan is one that has a large, open living space that is open to the kitchen and dining area. This space allows guests more room to freely move around and mingle
but also makes sure the host(s) still feel like they are part of the party. This type of plan tends to also lend itself to a kitchen with an island or large peninsula. An island or peninsula is a great area to put out food and drinks or place additional seating. This style opens up the seating options for guests. Everyone doesn’t have to feel crammed into one space and you likely won’t need to bring in many additional chairs, if any, if you have seating in your dining room, kitchen and living room. One thing to keep in mind with an open floor plan is that you will want the lighting style to flow throughout the space, as well as the wall color and flooring. If you have too many styles or colors in an open space, that visually breaks up the space and can make it feel smaller. For those that like to have smaller, more formal gatherings, like dinner parties, an open concept might not be the best plan for you. When hosting a formal gathering or dinner party, you likely will want a formal dining area. Having a separate dining area from the kitchen keeps the cooking process out of guests’ sight or
allows you to bring in a caterer or private chef, and the dining room stays clean and quiet where guests can talk. While the open concept plan is certainly very popular right now, it’s not for everyone. Some people still prefer formal, defined spaces and don’t want everyone to see into their kitchen that can get messy from all the cooking and baking. And just because your kitchen is not open to other areas of your home doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful, updated kitchen. You may want to consider updating cabinets, lighting, work surfaces, and storage so that you have a functional space. In the South, we’re fortunate enough to be able to be outside a lot of the year. Having a covered deck or screened porch adds to your entertaining square footage and allows guests to utilize space outside. However, if you want a
space that truly is for any season or all-weather, then a sunroom is a great option. Adding a sunroom or converting a deck or porch into a sunroom will give you additional space to host guests. Plus, it will give you a space to enjoy and entertain in all year long. If this holiday season leaves you feeling cramped and wishing for more space, consider a floor plan or kitchen remodel or even an addition. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m. Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks. Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531. The University of Georgia’s mystical ‘Iron Horse’

As the first laser-like beams of morning sunlight shoot across the highest point of pasture on a farm off Highway 15 about 10 miles south of Watkinsville, Ga., a huge figure begins to take shape in the misty dawn. This eerie sight has caused more than a few motorists to almost lose control as they catch a glimpse of the mystical vision. The famed “Iron Horse” was created in the old Fine Arts Building on the University of Georgia campus by renown artist Abbott Pattison of the Chicago Art Institute. After completion, the horse was placed in front of Reed Hall (Men’s Dormitory) and within hours of situating the big metal artwork, student and faculty members began gathering around the object out of apparent curiosity. Opinions were voiced about their feelings on the introduction of the horse, and both faculty and students seemed to be split 50/50 on how they felt about it. When the sun set, the rowdy students placed hay, newspaper and old tires around the horse and started a bonfire. As the fire raged around the horse, the more than 500 frenzied students chanted and cheered loudly. The Athens Fire Department was called, but the students tried to keep them away from the blaze. It was necessary for the firemen to turn the fire hoses on the students to allow them to extinguish the growing flames.

In an effort to avoid another outburst from the angry students, the “Iron Horse” was put on a flatbed trailer the next morning and hauled away. It was hidden in the woods behind a large barn on the farm of one of the UGA professors until the faculty could decide what to do with this strange piece of artwork, and for several years the great horse was forgotten. Dr. Curtis, however, had not forgotten the unique art object that Abbott Pattison had created, so in 1959, after four years in seclusion, the wonderful “Iron Horse” was moved to Dr. Curtis’s farm on the Greene/Oconee county line. For more than half a century now, the horse has had its own place on a knoll in the middle of a gorgeous pasture on the farm – but not without incident. When it first reappeared, UGA students would regularly come to

the farm under cover of darkness and push the great statue over on its side, but that ended when it received a permanent base. The “Iron Horse” has been draped
with flags on holidays, given wings like Pegasus, adorned with ribbons or wreaths at Christmas and even painted like a tiger before a Clemson football game at UGA. Nevertheless, the stately animal sits on a high plateau where it sees the first rays of the sun in the morning, is silhouetted by blue skies during the day, watches the last flickers of light every day and stands tall under a blanket of stars each night. Anyone traveling along Highway 15 between Watkinsville and Greensboro can see the “Iron
Horse” by looking to the left just after crossing the Greene County line. Its head will be facing toward the south and the waters of the fertile Oconee River less than 1/4 of a mile away, but you can bet that its rear end will always be pointed toward UGA and Athens where it was treated so rudely! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

Keene From the decades-long tradition of Magical Nights of Lights – with plenty of new twists – to the giant “longest, steepest, fastest” snow-tubing ride in North America, Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is kicking the holidays up more than a couple of notches. On a recent preview tour of License to Chill Snow Island for journalists, Safe Harbor Chief Operations Office John Lush painted a vivid picture of winter chills and thrills at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, which began in mid-November. Starting at Landshark Landing, which will now be
open year-round, and heading up Paradise Beach toward the park’s famed wave pool, Margaritaville will be fully decked out with snow, holiday decorations, Christmas trees, sparkling lights, carnival rides and a covered ice-skating rink. Along the way, visitors can partake of hot chocolate and make their own s’mores over 10 open fire pits. Warming stations will be strategically located throughout Snow Island to take the chill off. The Cat4 slide has been modified and covered with snow for a thrilling ride, and on the other
side of the bridge above the wave pool, dozens of trees have been removed, the hill has been regraded, and scaffolding has been added to create the giant snow tubing hill. The snow tubing ride has six 6-foot wide lanes and participants come down the hill on specially made tubes. As riders approach the area of the wave pool, white carpet helps slow their ride. “We cleared the hill in 30 days and graded the side of the mountain to create the snow tubing experience,” Lush said. “We’ve also added a magic carpet moving conveyor belt along the side that

Last summer, CBRE was chosen by the LLIDA board, the state agency that oversees management of Lake Lanier Islands on behalf of the state, to conduct the study that includes several components related to further development of the property, including a hotel and conference center. Research began on August 1,
2018. “We expect the draft report from CBRE in the next week or so,” said Bill Donohue, executive director of LLIDA in early November. “Once it is received, the board and our operations partner, Lanier Islands, will review the draft.” The study will cover market feasibility, concept site plans, construction pricing, financial models and economic impact. A separate component will examine
the impact of a proposed hotel and Legacy Lodge. “The work has come a long way,” Donohue said. “From the progress reports, ideas and concepts we’ve seen, their research has been excellent. We’ll take a couple of weeks to digest the report and have conversations about it.” Donohue said he anticipates that the board may make decisions as early as its December 14 meeting.

same storm that gave us the rain became a nor’easter and clobbered New York City. Less than 2 inches of snow, followed by a cold rain was the forecast. What actually happened was quite different. Six inches of snow and freezing rain shut the city down with numerous accidents and hundreds of trees falling on homes, cars, and powerlines. It was their version of “Snowmageddon.” I am hoping our computer models do a little better this winter. I will tell you something I hope you remember. A week before any potential snow the internet and social media will light up with amateur meteorologists forecasting a snow apoca-

lypse. There will be people from everywhere saying they saw 20 inches of snow or 10 inches of ice was going to happen. Don’t pay attention to any of that. After forecasting winter weather over the past 36 years for north Georgia, I know for a fact we cannot be certain of exact locations, the time of arrival, or how much wintry precipitation we will get until the day before or the morning of, the actual arrival of the storm.
