Corps holds Master Plan update meetings this month By Pamela A. Keene As the next part of the development of a new Master Plan for Lake Lanier, the Corps of Engineers will hold four public meetings at the end February. They are open to the public, who will be encouraged to give feedback on the latest Proposed Management Actions that will be the framework for the initial Draft Master Plan. Here are the meeting dates: • Dawson County, February 24, 6 to 9 p.m., Kilough Elementary School, 1063 Kilough Church Rd., Dawsonville • Hall County, February 25, 6 to 9 p.m., Hall County Gov Bldg., 2875 Browns Bridge Rd., Gainesville • Forsyth County, February 26, 6 to 9 p.m., Central Park Recreation Center, 2300 Keith Bridge Rd., Cumming, and; • Gwinnett County, February 27, 6 to 9 p.m., Lanier Project Management Office, 1050 Buford Dam Rd., Buford. To recap the project to date: Initial stakeholder meetings were held in November 2017 and initial public meetings were held in February 2018. Comments and issues were collected during those
meetings. A Recreation Carrying Capacity Study also has been conducted. Information collected from the initial stakeholder and public meetings, along with data collected from the Recreation Carrying Capacity Study, has been analyzed and the Corps of Engineers has developed Proposed Management Actions to be included in the Master Plan update. These Proposed Management Actions will be presented to the stakeholders for feedback on Feb-
ruary 5 and 6. The feedback will be considered and the Proposed Management Actions will be revised if necessary. The revised Proposed Management Actions will then be presented at the public meetings identified above. Comments and feedback received from the public at these meetings will be considered and the Proposed Management Actions will again be revised if necessary. Once the Proposed Manage-
ment Actions are final, the Draft Master Plan will be written and an Environmental Assessment will be conducted. It is expected that the Environmental Assessment will be completed by the end of September 2020. During the Environmental Assessment process, the public will have another chance to provide comment virtually when the Environmental Assessment is posted on the internet. The website address will be advertised at the appropriate time.
By Pamela A. Keene At the end of February, Corps of Engineers Lake Lanier Natural Resource Manager Nick Baggett is headed to the US Forest Service. Baggett will serve as Natural Resource ManBaggett ager at the Gainesville office for the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests. “This will be a new adven-
ture for me, because I started my career at Lake Lanier in 1991 as a park ranger and stayed here for 10 years the first time,” Baggett said. “I’ve always worked with the Corps in the Southeast, so moving into the US Forest Service will be another chapter in my life.” Baggett, a native of the Alabama Gulf Coast, graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in parks and recreation administration. He also worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Southern Alabama in Mo-
bile, studying recreation resource management. Right out of college, he was hired as a park ranger at Lanier where he served for 10 years, working in both shoreline management and park operations. From 2001 to 2005, he served in the South Atlantic Division offices in Atlanta as a project manager for the Regulatory Division of the Savannah District. Keene Moe Lyons was 16 when he purchased his first vinyl record in 1974. “It was ‘Rufusized’ by Rufus featuring Chaka Khan,” says Lyons, who owns Moe’s Record Shop on the east end of Flowery Branch’s Main Street, near the shores of Lake Lanier. “I still have the original at my house, but we have a couple of them here in the store.” As far back as the late ’70s and early ’80s, Lyons had dreams of opening a record store. By 1985, he was hired as Christmas help at a Record Bar store in his home state of Kentucky. Most recently, he retired at age 60 from

Hall County Water Treatment after 18 years. He opened the store in April 2019. “I guess you could say I have a music addiction, but I really like to share music, especially on vinyl,” he said. Lyons has been collecting albums for years and now has more than 6,000 albums at home in addition to the 4,000 to 4,500 in bins at the store. Located in the former location of Lakeside Market, the store is filled with bin after bin of vinyl, sorted by genre and alphabetized by artist. Ask him about almost any artist who has recorded an album and he can walk right to the proper bin and quickly pull

out an assortment. He’s got rock ’n’ roll from early Capricorn record acts to some Beatles, plus jazz, country, hip-hop, blues R&B, alternative and just name it. Most days, the turntable is spinning. It’s a Technics he’s has since 1989 or 1990. Lyons often posts covers of albums on Facebook that he’s playing that day so that people can drop by and hear their favorites. The store also sells Audio-Technica turntables with USB connections. “Sometimes people just drop by to talk about music and that’s great,” he said. “I don’t proclaim to be a music expert, but I really do like music. Right now, we just deal in vinyl, but we did have a guy come in a while back and asked if we had any 8-tracks because he had a player in his truck. He left his number after I told him I had a few at home, but he never came back. I wonder if anyone else even has an 8-track player anymore.” Aside from albums, Lyons occasionally purchases CDs, but he said it’s been a long time, thanks

These days, his favorite genre is jazz. “My top three musicians are Stanley Clark, Chick Corea and Miles Davis, but I also like rock and alternative bands including Led Zeppelin, Eagles and REM, plus Jason Isbell, Drive By Truckers and The Posies. ing on the album is and its quality. “From what I’ve been reading, vinyl is outselling CDs for the first time in nearly 35 years,” he said. “I can’t really explain it, but to me the analog sound quality is better than on CDs. A sampling of fishing information and tips from area experts

Bass Fishing Bass fishing has been steady. Both shallow and deep remain options given the recent warm weather. The warm weather followed by the intermittent cold fronts reposition the fish regularly, making the establishment of a pattern a challenge. Remain flexible as you search for viable daily patterns. Deep and shallow are both valid options on any given day. The rock fish we found recently have been shallow on steeper rock areas. The ditches are still holding fish and they are catchable on some days shallow and also deep. Crank baits, jerk baits, under spins, Damiki rigs, jigs, swim baits and shaky heads are all still viable options for both the rock fish and the ditch fish. The message is that there are many different options and bait choices out there to target these fish located in a myriad of places. Stay flexible and versatile in your

Striper Fishing Striper fishing has been good. Find them in Little River, Laurel Park and Wahoo Creek and you can catch them under the birds. First consistent top water bite in a while. Stripers are growing too. We caught double digits and a lot were 10-plus pounds and a few 15s. Down lines blue backs in the 30 to 35 feet deep. Trolling works but if you’re chasing the birds don’t pull up and just rabbit to them. Change baits then and they will hit the bait that you pulled. We have had four stripers on at one time. Pull Mini Macs and umbrella rigs when the wind picks up. Mini macs 150 feet and umbrella rigs 120 feet back using the big motor around 3 mph. General Fishing Well, the bad part, all of the nice warm weather we experienced, well, we may have a little payback coming. It looks like we go through a period of cooler than normal weather beginning early next week, then moderating to seasonally normal going into the end of January and perhaps the first of February. The big variable
going forward is a two fold result of our recent rain dumps, a rapidly rising lake levels (we’re above full pool as of the end of January). You may need to watch for an influx of muddy water. This may relocate some fish and bait, so factor that in as you look for fish, both bass and stripers. Remember, after that water moderates it
The Arts Council, Inc. has begun construction of a 6,300 square foot pavilion within the Arts Council Smithgall Arts Center property in downtown Gainesville. The official groundbreaking ceremony took place in late January, although construction started several weeks prior to that. “This exciting addition, funded through private donations, expands the positive future for the arts and entertainment hub in downtown Gainesville,” said Gladys Wyant, executive director of the organization. The pavilion can accommodate more than 300 for seated dinners. The surrounding

Aqua Terra in Buford gets new owners By Pamela A. Keene Aqua Terra Bistro in Buford has new owners. Dale and Jessica Ozaki purchased the popular restaurant late last year from long-time owner Laurie Attaway. They also own Fish Tales at Hideaway Bay Marina and Pig Tales at Aqualand Marina. “Laurie has always been a mentor to us as we’ve grown our business,” said Dale Ozaki. “When she told us she was interested in selling Aqua Terra to focus on her special event facility in Buford, we knew it was the right move.” The restaurant, which has long been a mainstay in downtown Buford, serves both lunch and dinner. It’s known for its fresh cuisine and upscale dining.
“We’ve kept many of the same menu items that have been favorites with our regulars, such as our tomato garlic spread and seared scallops,” he said. “And we’ve elevated the lunch and dinner menus with new dishes we’ll be introducing in the next few weeks, including veal, halibut, lamb and duck.” The operating hours have been extended as well. Aqua Terra is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 .m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Reservations for dinner, which begins at 4 p.m., are recommended. Water essay nets state recognition for Forsyth County student By Pamela A. Keene Chosen from more than 600 student essays in the 16-county Metropolitan North Atlanta Planning District’s Water Essay Contest, Forsyth County’s Saanvi Warke received first prize. She was recognized recently at the State Capitol and also at the January meeting of the Forsyth County Commission. The 11-year old daughter of Yash and Ashwini Warke is a 6thgrader at South Forsyth Middle School. Her essay, “Value Water, Consider Water, Save Lives,” told how much water her family uses daily and ways that people can conserve water and help their communities. “The Atlanta population continues to grow and we all need to conserve water,” Saanvi said. “Since 2001, the population has grown by 1 million people and water withdrawals have reduced by 10%, which is a very positive impact of water management,” her essay read. She did extensive research and reported about recent droughts and their affect on the state. She also brought her examples down to a personal level, relating how much water it takes to make one laptop computer – 88 gallons –

and how not having a computer would prevent her from reading, researching and writing her essay. “If not for water, I wouldn’t be able to eat the juicy red watermelon growing in my backyard.” She cited statewide water statistics – Georgia’s average rainfall is 50 inches per year – and included resources such as My Drops Count, to calculate a family’s water usage. The essay offered tips: turn off the water when brushing your teeth, choose energy-efficient appliances and fix leaks immediately.
“We are so proud of her,” said her mom Ashwini Warke. “Her writing skills are excellent and I credit her teachers and Forsyth County schools.” Saanvi wants to be an astronaut and study aerospace. She is the oldest of three children in her family. She loves science, math and going to museums. She was awarded a cash prize in the 18th annual contest. two granddaughters in tow. Building a legacy – this was his 20th year (out of a possible 22) participating. The penguin (Tom Diaz of Atlanta) showed up once again along with many first timers. Jim O’Dell, of Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club said jumpers “came

Wintertime on the Jersey Shore is really desolate, especially at my brother Haik’s marina. After all the boats have been hauled out, their masts unstepped and the engines winterized, there is not much else to do. The wind howls down the beach and the waves crash against the seawall and its no longer a warm inviting place to be. One winter my brother and his girlfriend booked a two-week vacation in Jamaica. He should have been suspicious because the airfare was so cheap. Then he realized that the plane was scheduled to take off from Kennedy airport at 6. In the morning! Since he had to arrive two hours early, and it was two hours away, this meant leaving home at 2 a.m. Our friend Tony and his girlfriend Susan decided to host a going away party. Susan would drive them all up to the airport at the end of the festivities. This made sense because Tony drank a bit too much. Susan was not a heavy drinker and tried everything to get Tony to slow down. She hid the liquor – he just bought more. She diluted it with water – he just

Tony woke up many hours later with a world class hangover. He was freezing cold and surrounded by an aura of whiteness. He was wondering if he was dead and finally realized that he was in his own car and it was covered with snow. Beyond that he had no idea where he was. He got out of the car and immediately two junk yard dogs showed up barking and snarling. He was able to climb up on top of a car and wrapping himself in his blanket began yelling for help. Eventually someone came along and rescued him. This was before cell phones and Uber but luckily there was a pay phone at the corner. He began to call everyone he knew to come get him, but the only one who answered the phone was Susan, his now ex-girlfriend who had moved out the night before. She must have been a really nice person because she took pity on him and drove all the way up to Staten Island to get him. I can imagine the atmosphere in the car on the way
home. It was probably chillier inside than outside! Once Haik and friend arrived in Jamaica things got better. Their hotel was palatial, brand new and right on the beach. A steel band was playing in the lobby/lounge area where there was a large rock sculpture which was obviously supposed to be a waterfall. Haik asked the manager why it wasn’t working and was told there had been a disagreement between the plumber and the electrician, and they had both walked off the job just before the hotel opened. Haik asked if he could have a look at it. Now you don’t own a successful marina without knowing something about water pumps and electricity. Within the hour he had not only gotten the waterfall flowing but the decorative lights worked too. The manager proclaimed him a hero, upgraded his room to a suite and gave him carte blanche at the bar for the rest of his stay! While they were there, they got friendly with the steel band members who adopted them and included them in all the afterhours parties. These guys were all See Mendes, page 22

With miles of beaches and dunes facing the Atlantic Ocean, the freedom and beauty of walking with the breezes and changing tides of St. Simons Island is a breathtaking vision of the true beauty of Georgia’s most popular barrier island. It boasts a diversity of ecosystems including saltwater marshes, mud flats, tidal creeks, maritime forests, white sand beaches and dunes. Combine this with a magnificent sunrise from a seaside balcony room at the famous King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort and you will think you are in heaven! But it wasn’t always that way at St. Simons Island. Standing on the wall of Fort Frederica scanning the river and the marshes beyond was serious business around 1740. The British soldiers on guard knew that the Spanish-held Fort St. Simons was only five miles away and were painfully aware that war had been declared with Spain. Eventually these English soldiers realized that they would have to fight for their lives on St. Simons Island. Even though the British were far outnumbered, good intelligence, a timely ambush and some skillful maneuvering of ships and men by James Edward Oglethorpe made the Spanish believe that the British force was much larger. Therefore, after the historical, but small ambush, known as “The Battle of Bloody Marsh,” the Spanish retreated back to Florida and were never a threat to General Oglethorpe and his fledgling Georgia colony again. Today, visitors to St. Simons Island can walk the open grounds of Fort Frederica and gaze across the picturesque “Marshes of Glynn” that were made famous by poet, Sidney Lanier, and never have to worry about being fired upon. This immaculate spot is simply one of many that attracts folks to St. Simons. For nearly a century, families from all over the South have

come to this gorgeous barrier island to enjoy the elegant atmosphere, mouthwatering food and antebellum style hospitality at the King and Prince Hotel, which was built because of an insult. It seems that one evening in the early 1930s at the nearby Cloister Hotel on neighboring Sea Island, Frank Horn and Morgan Wynn were tossed out for being drunk and disorderly. Horn was a tall, heavy man and Wynn was a short, skinny fellow, and when seen together, they were affectionally known as “The King and Prince.” So, because of the insult, the two gentlemen founded the King and Prince as a seaside dance club to compete with the Cloister Hotel. The main hotel building with its classic Mediterranean architecture was completed and opened to the public just in time for World War II in 1941. During that period, the new hotel was converted into a training facility for coast watchers looking for German submarines. Following the war, the King and Prince opened to families again in 1947 and has continued to serve as a prime vacation destination in the Golden Isles of Georgia. Renovations and expansions were completed in 1972 and 1983, and the hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 as the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort (www.kingandprince.com). It offers a resort experience with

Southern flair, fantastic and varied cuisine and spectacular ocean views from almost every room. Many golf lovers come to St. Simons just to play the King and Prince Golf Course, which is home of the Hampton Club. This 18-hole championship course is both challenging and beautifully interwoven with ancient oak trees, island holes, views of birds and wildlife in the surrounding marshes and picturesque lagoons. With four signature holes highlighting play on the back nine, the entire 18-hole, Par 72 course combines for an experience that always finds it on golf’s “mustplay” lists. Fishing, birding and wildlife viewing are always great outdoor endeavors when visiting St. Simons Island. This huge coastal ecosystem of salt marshes, tidal rivers and creeks is probably the best rearing ground for fish, sharks and shellfish on the Atlantic seaboard of the USA. Fine dining and local seafood are highlights of any trip to the Georgia barrier islands, and St. Simons has some of the best. Certainly the chefs at the Echo Restaurant in the King and Prince would be in the running in any food and drink contest! Being they are the only seaside restaurant on St. Simons Island, their evening dining is both romantic and mouth watering … and eating locally-harvested breakfast offerings while gazing out to recently sun-lit sea is unforgettable! Certainly more experiences are available on St. Simons Island including visits to the historic

For me, however, the King and Prince, beaches, marshes, old oak trees and the slow movement of time and tide take me back to simpler time in my youth when my family would visit this magical island during the summer break from school. Sure there are new businesses and different people, but
the natural beauty where sea, sky and shifting sands meet has a soothing effect that transcends all time. I’m happy to know that such a place still exists in more than just my reveries! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.
Atlanta Boat Show back in familiar location in Hall C February 2020
By Pamela A. Keene Moving back into Hall C at the Georgia World Conference Center was a boon to the Atlanta Boat Show this year. After having to juggle show space in 2019 because of the Atlanta’s hosting Super Bowl LIII last year, it was apparent that exhibitors and the public enjoyed being able to stretch their wings again for the four-day show in mid-January. “The show did really well this year,” said Kevin Murphy, man-

ager of the Atlanta Boat Show on behalf of the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association. “More than 170 exhibitors really filled the building with boats. A number of exhibitors and dealers expanded their space, plus we had many new products.”
The Lake Lanier Association showcased many of its initiatives, including Shore Sweep and its campaign to raise awareness about the 100foot rule. Cynthia Cochran, Jess Grogan and Sheila Davis took a break to pose for a photo.
The event showcased more than 700 boats, from pontoons to cruising yachts and jet skis to a 41-foot full-keeled sailboat. “This was the first time in a number of years that we had a sizable keelboat on the floor,” he said. “We are still hoping to expand our draw to the sailing community, but we realize that it’s costly for dealers to bring their boats from the coast.” Other highlights included the world debuts of new boats from two manufacturers: Nautique and Mastercraft. Organizers are looking ahead to further expansion for the 2021 show. “We have already reserved Hall B and Hall C, which will add 100,000 more square feet to next year’s show,” Murphy said. “Some exhibitors have already reserved their spaces. “And for consumers, just get ready to batten down the hatches for an even better Atlanta Boat Show in 2021.” The Atlanta Boat Show benefits the Marine Trade Association of Metro Atlanta. The 2021 Atlanta Boat Show takes place at the Georgia World Congress Center January 14-17.

Keep an eye on the sky this month I hope your holidays were great and you are enjoying this “winter” weather! On my way to work today I was thinking about what I would write about. I passed by a couple walking their two dogs along the side of the road. I could not remember when I ever saw anyone walking in shorts this time of the year! When we are in a neutral pattern, that is, without an El Nino (eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean cooling) or a La Nina (eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean warming) we generally see a lot of rain. We were in a pretty good drought this fall and now we are enjoying a nice rainfall surplus! That worries me. We are heading into the wettest months of the year and the ground simply can’t hold much more rain. Many trees are still dormant and there is nothing to soak up the rain. In February, we average 4.6 inches of rain. Our average for March is 5.5 inches. For April, we average 4.3 inches. That’s about 14 and a half inches. With a continuation of above average rainfall expected, we are going to see some flooding. Creeks, rivers, and streams have been at near flood stage or over since the heavy rain began in January.
You should prepare for your home. Make sure your gutters are all Glenn cleaned out. Address Burns any problem areas where you had flooding issues. Lanier I know we are going Outlook to see a lot of rain in the months ahead. It may not be all rain. Thunderstorms will also be rumbling in with the parade of fronts expected. Some of these storms will likely produce tornadoes. I have seen a general uptick in tornadoes this time of year of the past several years. Cobb, Fulton, and Coweta counties were among the hardest hit. Straight line winds are also a major concern. With all rain and saturated ground, it does not take much for trees to fall. Even healthy trees can come down. I want to make sure you are adequately warned when severe weather approaches. A weather alert radio is your best bet. There are many of weather apps for your phone, including ours here at WSB. Ours is free of charge and it is actually me that will alert you when severe storms are approaching. Be safe everyone. Severe storm season is getting under way this month. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

By Pamela A. Keene hris Lovelady is an anomaly in a good way. He has spent his whole career with the US Army Corps of Engineers at one project: Lake Lanier. At the end of February, he’s retiring from the only workplace he’s ever known for the past 35 years. It will be bittersweet for many of the people around the lake who have worked with Lovelady as he moved through the ranks, first as a coop student from the University of Georgia and ending his career as Assistant Operations Project Manager. “I’ve done almost everything at the Buford Dam project, except working in the powerhouse and managing construction,” says Lovelady, whose family moved to Hall County when he was in middle school. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1982. “I have worked on both sides of the project, from park operations and shoreline management, eventually serving in administration and leadership.” Lovelady graduated from UGA in 1987 with a degree in recreation with an emphasis on
natural resource management. He worked his junior and senior years as a coop student at Lanier, finding out then that he’d made the right decision for his life. “In college I tried to volunteer for the National Park Service and the US Forest Service, but neither of them was taking volunteers at the time,” he said. “That’s how I made my way to the Corps, and it was the start of my career.” His love of the outdoors began early. “Our family visited Yellowstone National Park often from the time I was young, and my dad, who was a Delta pilot, helped us learn a love for the outdoors and travel,” he said. “I remember a park ranger sitting on a horse, wearing a straw hat and some kind of uniform. I told my dad then that I wanted to grow up and be a park ranger.” When he graduated, the Corps’ offered him a job as park ranger at Lanier. He was hired by longtime Project Operations Manager Erwin Topper. Starting out on the park operations side, Lovelady managed the campgrounds and parks as he followed a path in recreation. By 1992, he was tapped to move into shoreline management, working there as an area ranger, then in administration at the front desk, followed by time in real estate and natural resource management. By 1997, he became chief ranger over shoreline real estate and natural resource management, where he worked for 12 years. nitaries from the International Olympic Committee arrived up there by helicopter to view the potential site,” he said. “At that time it was just a big parking lot with a boat ramp. They were served big buckets of fried chicken and peaches. That first trip really changed that whole area and still brings international attention to Lake Lanier.” Lovelady was instrumental in shepherding the Corps’ updated Environmental Impact Statement and Shoreline Management Plan for Lanier in 2004. They were the first such updates since 1987. “Both of these were multi-year projects that help us craft a vision for Lake Lanier going forward,” he said. “We did an extensive shoreline usage and dock carrying capacity studies, gathering information about recreation that led to our current limit of 10,615 private docks plus other changes. We held public meetings and considered the feedback and input. It was a big deal that took three to four years.” During that time, the concept of community docks was implemented, allowing for residential developers to install a limited number of slips for homeowners. The Corps closely examined various aspects of how visitation, development and lake access affected the lake and the public lands surrounding it. His work resulted in his being accepted for the one-year leadership program with the South Atlantic Division, headquartered in Atlanta, where he served in 2006.
He also assumed a 4-month temporary assignment as site manager at Lake Walter F. George south of Columbus. In 2009, Lovelady moved to the position of natural resource manager at Lanier, because of his experience at the project. As such, he supervised both divisions of the Buford Dam office, hiring and overseeing personnel, setting schedules, administering budgets, plus managing and assisting with various permitting related to construction. Lovelady’s family lived on the lake, where his mother sold real estate. A former US Air Force captain, his father Parker flew for Delta Air Lines starting in 1964. As a teen, Lovelady had a boat and fished the lake with his twin brother Scott, who now lives in Flowery Branch, and brother Todd, who lives in Oakwood. Lovelady married his highschool sweetheart Sherri Wilson in 1987. An interior design graduate from UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, she and Chris moved to Dahlonega so that she could get her teaching certificate. They moved to Buford in 1990 living near her parents. She also earned her master of education degree and then her specialist degree from Piedmont College. She has taught school in the Buford City Schools for 21 years. The couple have two adult children: John, 30, who lives in Buford with his wife Emily, and Andrew, 27, who lives in Highlands, North Carolina, with his wife Bobbi Jo and their 3-year-

old daughter Ella. Lovelady and his wife are retiring to the mountains of Western North Carolina. “I’ve always loved the mountains and all that comes with it,” he said. “Plus Andrew and his family live there, and Sherri’s parents, Joe and Norma Wilson, are retired nearby.” Now that he has spare time, he will concentrate on his favorite pastimes – church activities, hunting deer, turkey and squirrel, and trout fishing. “We can hear the creek running from right behind our home.” He recalls perhaps one of the most hectic and focused time at Lake Lanier, right after September 11, 2001. “It certainly did put us all on high alert and strengthened our relationships with law enforcement that are still strong today.” Throughout his career, he’s also worked closely with the marina operators, local governments, dock builders and land developers. “I have certainly enjoyed these relationships.” Looking back, he readily admits that he’s grateful for his career and the many people who have crossed his path along the way. “I’ve had a blessed life not only here at Lake Lanier, but overall,” he said. “It has been just perfect for me. I’ve met so many people here in those 35 years and had the chance to do so many things. Now I’m looking forward to kicking back and spending more time with my family.”

Lanier’s shoreline trees deserve special mention on Arbor Day
By Jane Harrison They stand in winter, silvery limbs quivering in the breeze or emerald needles glistening above the water. Trees, the silent natural sentries of Lake Lanier, guard 700 miles of shoreline, protecting it from ravages of weather, enriching the soil, nourishing wildlife, and beautifying the lake’s edges. On Arbor Day, Feb. 21, Georgia civic groups, schools and organizations pay tribute to the wooden soldiers whose roots nurture deep environmental, practical, and aesthetic benefits. The trees that reign where water meets land deserve special mention for the important roles they fill in life around the lake. “The trees along the government shoreline on Lake Lanier are especially important,” according to Nick Baggett, Natural Resource Manager. He explained that hardwoods and evergreens help protect water quality, serving as natural filters. Their branches, understory growth, and leaf litter slow down rain, allowing more time for it to soak into soil. Their roots hold soil in place and help control erosion. Wildlife dwells in tree cavities, nests among branches, and feeds
on nuts, buds, seeds and berries produced by trees. Their canopy offers shade, a welcome relief to wildlife and humans seeking respite from sunshine on the water. Successful anglers know where fish hideout among submerged tangled roots and dead tree “fish attractors.” Aside from these practical benefits, trees also offer aesthetic value. “People love natural growth as opposed to manmade” constructs, Baggett said. The majestic beauty of lush green in summer, striking reds and golds of fall foliage, stark grays and whites of sleeping winter skeletons, and blooms and pastel buds in spring create a year-round palette against the lake’s blue backdrop. Since the lake filled in the 1950s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has “managed the shoreline by leaving it natural,” Baggett said. The Corps Forest Management Plan specifies that “forest and vegetative management objectives at Lake Sidney Lanier are to sustain a healthy, vigorously growing, unevenaged, esthetically pleasing forest capable of supporting recreational use.” Achieving that goal means letting nature handle it alone.
The 75-plus native tree and shrub species documented by the Corps around Lake Lanier, from Allegheny Chinquapin to Yellow Buckeye, are left to revegetate themselves. Balance is key, Baggett said. Cutting and planting of non-native tree species is restricted on Lanier. The Corps requires permits for altering government owned shoreline and interfering with the natural course of tree life and demise. Baggett noted that some homeowners move to the lake with the idea they are moving into a subdivision and think they can chop down trees on Corps land to enhance their lake view or plant their favorites to adorn their property. He said the Corps manages natural resources for the public good, not for individuals. He speculated that without Corps’ oversight, Lanier’s woodsy shores could transform “into a great big subdivision.” But, “a lot of people love trees and don’t want to see them cut,” he added. They appreciate seasonal views and privacy that trees provide. Baggett said the Corps aims to keep the shoreline as natural as possible, with no manmade inter-
ference. New tree growth sprouts from “volunteers,” saplings emerging from seeds and nuts dropped by long time natives. When a tree dies, the goal is to let it decay in place, where it might offer a hollow hole for nesting owls, grub for woodpeckers, or organic matter to enrich the soil. He said, “Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future.” The first Georgia Arbor Day was proclaimed by the Georgia General Assembly in December, 1890. In 1941, the General Assembly set the third Friday in February as the day of our state Arbor Day. While National Arbor Day is the third Friday in April, it is too warm at that time of year to plant trees in Georgia. The erratic winter we’ve been experiencing in Northeast Georgia doesn’t need to deter you from getting ready for spring. Whether you’re interested in growing vegetables or flowers, spending a little time with a couple of seed and gardening websites can set the tone for your next six months of productive digging in the dirt. Although the weather has been a roller coaster, you can get a jumpstart on your spring plantings by investing in a good set of grow-lights and a seed-sprouting system. I recently purchased grow-light components – a light stand, the right kind of lights, seed-starting trays with domes, and planting medium – from Park Seed. Their brand is called BioDome; similar kits are available from Amazon or box retailers. And while I was online, I ordered several seed packets: purple krim heirloom tomatoes, midnight snack cherry tomatoes, arugula and buttercrunch lettuce. My plan is to start them in early to mid-February so they will be ready to plant in the garden around mid-April. That’s the time

Located just 35 miles northeast of Atlanta, the lake offers some of the finest camping opportunities in the South. The Corps operates 7 campgrounds at Lake Lanier. Camping enthusiasts may enjoy the luxuries of fully developed areas with water and electrical hookups or “rough it” at designated primitive areas. Most campgrounds have park attendants on duty to assist our visitors. Camping in undesignated areas such as on the lake’s shoreline and islands is prohibited.

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m. Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks. Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531. Middle East journey filled with the unexpected By Pamela A. Keene Lakeside Senior Reporter Pam Keene and her husband Rick Fulgham spent three weeks in the Middle East recently. They visited Palestine, Israel, Egypt and Jordan. Here is the first of her two reports. hen friends found out we were headed to the Middle East right after Christmas, the first thing they asked was: Why? The easy answer was it was a chance to learn more about this age-old part of the world, to look back at its long history and perhaps to learn more about the prevalent unrest there. What we found was much more complex, exposing us to ancient kingdoms, modern history, and many people who have the same hopes and dreams we do. I had been to Israel, Palestine/Bethlehem and Egypt 20 years ago, but this trip was a first for Rick. We arrived in Tel Aviv Airport after dark and were met by our driver. He navigated the highways, soon crossing the border into Palestine, where the scenery abruptly changed: buildings lying in piles of rubble, stacks of discarded car carcasses, streets – if you could call them that – rampant with potholes, no traffic lights. Our driver got lost three times before finding our hotel. Although we had a rocky start,

going to Palestine helped give us a more complete picture of this part of the world and the depth of the people, the places and the struggles that have long plagued this part of the world. For centuries three religions – Judaism, Islam and Christianity – have been forever entangled. We had a 360-degree living view of four countries tightly connected and intertwined in our three weeks of travel. Our time in Palestine exposed us to the rawness of the countryside that’s mostly desert, hillsides with rows of gray-green olive trees and centuries of religious and cultural history. Our Palestinian trip leader Abi had earned his graduate degree in Biblical history. He skillfully wove a tapestry of Old and New Testament history with modern-day Palestinian sites in a country where Muslims, Jewish people and Christians all live together, sometimes not peacefully. We visited the ancient sites well-known from the Old and New Testaments, including the Mount of Temptation where Jesus was tempted three times by Satan before beginning his ministry. We saw the Shepherd’s Field, where at Jesus’ birth the shepherds’ journey to the manger took place. We visited Hebron on the West Bank, the site of the Sermon on the Mount, Jericho and the settlement of Battir with 4,000-year-old

Faith on display Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, lies within the borders of Palestine, despite the recent answer on Jeopardy quiz show that said Bethlehem was in Israel. We visited there five days after Christmas, where the mixture of Christianity, Judaism and Islam was evident in a surreal sort of way. Manger Square is bordered by the Church of the Nativity on one end and a mosque on the other. Partway between, a 30-foot artificial cone-shaped Christmas tree stood with bright red and gold ornaments. filled with these types of juxtapositions, which as an American drew my attention to the vast differences between the people who live in this part of the world. As we interacted with people along the way, however, it was evident that the citizens in the Middle East, no matter their religion or nationality, were welcoming and receptive to our being there. To our surprise, when we drove up, a huge white disk – probably eight feet in diameter graced with the trademark A of the University of Alabama – greeted us. What a great conversation starter with the owners, whose nephew was currently playing for the Crimson Tide. They, of course, were following US college football, especially in 2019, when Alabama played Clemson for the National Championship. Our time in Palestine also included a visit to a Jewish settlement, where ex-patriot Jewish people from the United States and other parts of the world, created their own oasis inside the borders of Palestine. The modern village with brick homes looked British, with well-groomed front lawns and flower gardens. We spent about an hour in conversation with one of the senior members of the settlement, who tried to explain how people living in the settlement had reached out to the neighboring Palestinians to initiate blended sporting events as a way to build bridges between them. However, because of the long-standing mistrust between the two cultures, the program was
