Florida wants Special Master’s report sent back for reconsideration

is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene Contributing writers Jane Harrison, Millie Adcox Columnists Glenn Burns, Steve Johnson, Mike Rudderham, Ken Sturdivant Travel Editor Bill Vanderford Lakeside is published monthly by Lanier Publishing, Inc. based in Gainesville, GA, with distribution in some 300 locations around Lake Lanier and other areas. Opinions expressed by contributing writers are not necessarily those of Lakeside, its staff or its advertisers. Manuscripts and photographs submitted will be considered for publication. Lakeside cannot be held responsible for such materials in case of damage or loss.

By Jane Harrison Florida implored U.S. justices to decline the report of a federal court official in what Florida claims is its last remaining legal remedy to save the Apalachicola region from devastation. Florida attorneys submitted exceptions to a Special Master’s recommendations to the Supreme Court on the May 31 deadline, asking the court to send the report back to appointee Ralph Lancaster to reconsider. Before issuing his report Feb.14, Lancaster refereed more than a year of costly legal warring between Florida and Georgia over water allocation in the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint River system in the aftermath of an October 2013 Florida lawsuit. The special master, appointed a year after Florida filed suit, denied the Sunshine State’s claims that limiting Georgia’s water consumption along the river basin would fix the water woes downstream in the Apalachicola Region. He stated that since Florida did not target the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the legal matter, the court could not assure Florida the relief it sought by capping Georgia’s water use. The Corps con-

trols water releases into the Apalachicola River in Florida through five dams on the Chattahoochee River, including Buford Dam which holds Lake Lanier, the largest ACF reservoir. Lancaster’s report contends that because the Corps was not a party in the lawsuit, the court could not mandate any change in the Corps operations, thus it could not guarantee that limits on Georgia water use would funnel more water into Florida. In their exceptions to Lancaster’s report, Florida attorneys claimed Lancaster erred in concluding that uncertainties about the Corps’ operations prevented him from apportioning water from Georgia into Florida. The brief pointed to a statement in the Corps Decision of Record authorizing the ACF Water Control Manual, finalized 16 days after the special master sent his recommendations to the court. The Corps wrote: “With regard to the Florida v. Georgia case, (the Corps) will review any final decision from the U.S. Supreme Court and consider any operational adjustments that are appropriate in light of the decision, including modifications to the existing WCM.”

Thus, Florida attorneys argue, a ruling by Lancaster to limit Georgia’s water consumption could influence the Corps’ operation of the river system and could redress Florida’s injuries. Lancaster’s report did not deny Florida suffered harm, nor did it leave Georgia blameless. It cited evidence that Georgia farmers tapped the Flint River with little restraint, the Atlanta metropolitan area was slow to cut water consumption during the 2012 drought, and that Georgia water use was “unreasonable.” Florida also claimed legal precedents do not require injured states to “establish by clear and convincing evidence that a decree is certain to redress that injury.”

JOHN NICHOLSON 678-943-8083 Sales@GvilleWebDesign.com

Early in his role, Lancaster declared that Florida bore the burden of proof that limiting Georgia’s water use would remedy Florida’s harms. Florida sued following the collapse of the Apalachicola’s oyster fisheries allegedly due to low flow of fresh water during the 2012 drought. Georgia must reply to Florida’s exceptions by July 31. After that, Florida has until Aug. 31 to respond. Justices are expected to consider the case in its October 2017 term, which runs through September 2018. The court’s rulings historically concur with special masters’ recommendations, but occasionally render exceptions based on states’ arguments.

8 LAKESIDE

July 2017

What the colored running lights mean on watercraft and aircraft July is a significant month full of celebration and patriotic events. Boaters have the opportunity to enjoy the fireworks show from unique position, out on the lake. It’s certainly an excellent vantage point, with clear, calm weather and surface. There are also many other vessels in your vicinity doing the same thing and that can pose a collision hazard once they begin moving. Red, white and blue always takes center stage during July festivities, the proud colors of our flag ... but that’s not what I am referring to. There’s a different combination of shade: red, white and green. They are the colors of running lights found on watercraft of all sizes, even the wings of aircraft. Their sole mission is to provide the observer the direction of travel, also known as aspect and or target angle, for those with military experience. The following example of this genius system with light demarcation lines provides the very core – extremely important information – for collision avoidance. As stated in the Navigation Rules of the Road, lights should be displayed during periods of darkness or restricted visibility. Actually

most vessels equipped will exhibit them any time they are underway, especially commercial vessels. Lines that separate the colors into sectors have meaning beginning with; Side Lights Red is left (port) Green is right (starboard) Stern Light White Masthead Light

Small, seemingly insignificant, pictures, displayed where they can best be seen at all times while operating underway both day and night, will deliver outstanding results and can help moderate risk when navigating a vessel.

White Yellow (used for commercial towing and public service vessels, flashing). When you see these lights it provides the most important part of visualization of the approaching water craft. For instance, if you see a red light then you are looking at the other boat’s left side and you are obligated to turn right, slow down, or both to avoid an incident. In a head-on situation you would see both red and green, and the white masthead light. White light only would indicate you were observing from astern. There are only three types of situations described in the Rules of the Road. This one graphic, with the distinct colors and division of sectors with lines of demarcation speaks volumes of quick, easy to interpret, information. Propose this idea to enhance safe boating and proper action to operating rules of collision avoidance. Place this small decal in the helm area to provide immediate visual reference. Graphics are universal in nature crossing the boundary of spoken language.

The purpose of the bead is to protect the knot and the size of the hook depends of the size or the bait. The most critical factor in summer time down rod fishing is lively bait. Stripers love to chase their bait so change your bait often. It is time to put your Lead Core and Umbrella rods in the boat and use them in the creek and river channels to get a reaction bite from those 25 to 35 foot suspended fish. Deploy your lead core to seven to eight colors with a one ounce buck tail jig and a pearl or chartreuse 4 inch shad body. Don’t forget to allow enough room to make a wide sweeping turn; your jig is a football field behind the boat. Increasing your speed to 5 or 6 mph will also keep your jig out of the trees when making a U turn. If you want to fish while you are searching an area the Umbrella rig is always a good choice. When you find the stripers you

can pull your umbrella rigs up and put out baits or continue to use you umbrella rigs to catch fish. We are setting our rigs at 150 feet behind the boat at 3 mph. Look for the fish to be at a depth of 25 to 70 feet deep over a bottom of 40 to 120 feet. There are fish in every creek from Browns Bridge to the dam. More teeth being put into abandoned boats removal By Pamela A. Keene With the support of a $25,000 budget appropriation from the Georgia general Assembly in the 2017 fiscal year and several law enforcement and legal entities coming on board, the Lake Lanier Association program to remove derelict docks and abandoned boats is gaining traction. In early June, the association, with the help of Marine Specialties Inc., removed a vessel dubbed “The Titanic Houseboat” from the lake in Hall County. The vessel had sunk at a private dock several years ago and, when the lake is at full pool, was completely submerged. “Now that the boat has been removed, we can follow up with identifying the vessel owner by tracking the registration and hull numbers,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director with the association. “We’re stepping up our work with the DNR and the solicitor general’s office in Hall to pursue enforcement related to the violation of local debris ordinances if the owner can be identified.” Hall County Solicitor General Stephanie Woodard is working with the association. “We have a vested interest in this work, be-

cause of public safety and inherent dangers to humans and property,” she said. “Plus, the environmental concerns include leakage from batteries or fuel, and other contaminates like plastics or metals in the water. We have a gap between public education about the hazards of abandoning vessels and are also working to connect people with the right kinds of resources to dispose of their vessels.” The solicitor general is currently pursuing one case to locate an owner. LLA board member John Barker heads the committee spearheading this project. “We’ve removed four steel-hulled houseboats from the lake since July 2016 and our program is moving along very well,” he said. “We have great partnerships with the DNR, the Corps and local authorities.” The association has developed a structured process for dealing with abandoned vessels and derelict docks. The committee meets quarterly with the Corps and the DNR to go over the current inventory of known boats and docks with issues. “It’s really been working well,” he said. “It’s our goal to identify owners and

get them to be responsible.” He said that he also hopes that when owners are found, they will reimburse the county and other entities for the costs of removal. “We hope that the media involvement in covering these removals will help us educate the public,” Woodard said. “The Lake Lanier Association is to be commended for compiling a list of these abandoned and submerged vessels. We hope to collaborate even more closely with authorities, to clean up these vessels and meaningfully solve this problem.” Contact the Lake Lanier Association at 770-503-7755 to report PHOTO COURTESY OF LLA any submerged vessels or abanThe most recent houseboat removal project took place last month. doned docks.

Responses support security cameras on private docks By Pamela A. Keene By the close of the public comment period in mid-June, more than 250 people had responded to the US Army Corps of Engineers’ request for input about the possibility of allowing security cameras on private docks on Lake Lanier. The current policy of the Corps prohibits cameras. “Most of the comments are in support of allowing security cam-

as well as property protection, it would be a benefit for homeowners to be able to install cameras on their docks,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the association. Baggett said that both the local office and the district office will be involved in the final decision. He said he expects the decision to be made public by the end of 2017.

Minimum releases continue at Buford Dam, lake level rises By Jane Harrison The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continued only minimum water releases from Buford Dam last month as Lake Lanier crept closer to full pool. The Corps returned to normal operations on three other reservoirs the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee Flint river basin which reached full pool by June 1. However, with Lanier still down about six and a half feet, the Corps was allowing only what was necessary to flow through Buford Dam. Corps officials reported the federal agency is releasing about half the average volume of water from Lanier that it would allow if the lake were full. “Near normal rainfall over the past two months, along with prudent water management, have enabled Lake Lanier to rise” more than 2.9 feet to elevation 1,064.5 feet, said Lisa Hunter, Corps Mobile District Public Affairs Officer. The reservoirs in the middle and lower basin – West Point Lake, Walter F. George Lake and Lake Seminole – reached their full summer levels, while Lanier remained lower than its 1,071 feet full summer elevation.

PARK INFO

“Releases from Lake Lanier will continue to be just for waterquality and water-supply requirements at this time,” she said. With the other reservoirs at or near full summer levels, the Corps “should be able to meet downstream needs with normal basin inflow for the foreseeable future,” she said. Drought operations initiated April 4 were suspended on those reservoirs. The only change in flow from Lake Lanier is increased output required for minimum flow downstream at Peachtree Creek. Minimum flows at Peachtree Creek were increased to 750 cubic feet per second on May 1 from 650 cfs, said Tim Oberle, Mobile District Deputy Public Affairs Officer. He explained the newly enacted Water Control Manual for Lanier calls for an increase from the minimal release of 650 cfs between November and April. The Corps’ current goal is for minimum releases from Buford Dam to provide no less than 750 cfs between May to October. The volume is measured about 40 miles downstream from Buford Dam in the Chattahoochee River, just upstream of the confluence with Peachtree Creek.

Oberle refuted local hearsay that the Corps was allowing Lake Lanier to remain low to facilitate bridge construction on Ga. 53, where work continues on Boling Bridge at the Hall-Forsyth County line. “That rumor is not true. Bridge construction would not impact Corps of Engineers operations on Lake Lanier,” he said. Nor has bridge construction on Lake Lanier affected Corps’ management on the ACF in the past, he added. Lake Lanier’s mid-June level remained in the Corps’ Action Zone 4, or just above Drought Zone. The classifications, ranging from Zone 1-4 with the lowest being Drought Zone, guide the Corps’ about the volume of water to release for power generation and other needs downstream. “With Lake Lanier in Zone 4, the current generation is approximately 0-2 hours per day which reflects a daily average of 5601500 cfs,” Oberle said. “The flow, during drought operations, (is) the same … . If Lake Lanier were at or near full pool (Zone 1), during summer months, the normal generation would be approximately 2-3 hours. This is approximately 1500-2000 cfs average daily flow.”

July 2017

Be lightning aware this summer It was certainly great to see above average rainfall last month. Even though our Lake Lanier basin is relatively small, persistent, almost daily rainfall, has kept the lake levels from dropping too much this summer. I expect above average rainfall to continue during July with above average temperatures. As we all know, July is the hottest month of the year. While it may be hot on the ground, it may not be the case well above ground. I frequently see temperatures this time of year at the 15,000 foot level in the 5 to 15 degree range. When temperatures get that cold with elevation that quickly, the atmosphere becomes very unstable. Monster summer storms quickly evolve in this type of environment, leading to power straight line winds and large hail. While wind and hail are certainly formidable threats to your safety, it is the lightning in summer storms that proves time and time again, to be the most threatening. Georgia Tech has been doing some amazing research on lightning and has now developed the Georgia Lightning Mapping Array. Lightning and its behavior can now be tracked and portrayed in three dimensions and in near real time. This lets us as meteorologists, correlate storm structure with lightning. You might be amazed to know that a lightning bolt is about as big around as a piece of chalk. It looks much larger be-

cause it is so very hot, about 50,000 degrees! About 70 percent of all Glenn lightning strikes occur over land. However, Burns only 25 percent of all lightning flashes are Lanier from cloud to ground. Outlook The rest are intra-cloud or cloud to cloud. There are also two types of lightning. The most common is the negative lightning bolt that delivers an electric current of about 30,000 amps. Then we have the positive lightning strike. This is less common but mostly responsible for all the lightning fires we have every summer in north Georgia. What we are dealing with is an electrical charge of 300,000 amps! About 5 percent of all lightning is positive. A negative lightning strike originates from the base of a thunderstorm. A positive strike originates from the top of the anvil-shaped cloud of a thunderstorm and can travel as many as 10 miles from the parent storm. Many times a positive strike will occur in areas experiencing clear skies or only slightly cloudy. This is called a bolt from the blue and can contain a billion volts of electricity! As a result of their great power and lack of warning, you can imagine why positive lightning is so dangerous. Objects struck by lightning experience heat and magnetic forces of great magnitude. The heat created by lightning currents traveling through a tree may vaporize

Missy Burgess back at Lanier Islands By Pamela A. Keene A little over two years ago, a mainstay at Lanier Islands retired. Missy Burgess, who had worked at the resort since 1998, decided to take some personal time. But now she’s back at Lanier IsBurgess lands in a brandnew job as manager of public relations and sponsorships. “Mr. Williams and Grier (Todd) stayed in touch with me regularly about my coming back to the Islands,” Missy said. “The time was right in May, so I’m back and remembering all the wonderful things I love about this place and all the people here. And I’m so happy to see the many new things that are here since I left.”

Missy’s history began with the Islands in 1998 when she was hired as golf tournament manager and later golf sales for PineIsle golf course. She was there when ownership transitioned in 2008 to the Williams family and many renovations, improvements and investments began to reshape the 1,100-acre vacation destination: the creation and rebranding of Legacy Lodge, the addition of the Legacy Villas, the redesign of the former Emerald Point Golf Course into Legacy on Lanier golf course and the opening of LanierWorld. She worked in special events and sponsorships as the resort expanded, with the creation of a full entertainment district along its white-sand beaches. Sunset Cove has become a focal point of activity in the Island’s Full Moon Parties, new restaurant and eatery

options, weekend movies, concerts and regular events. Over the years, she has cultivated numerous relationships with business owners, corporate sponsors and supporters of Lanier Islands across the state. “I really love working with all our sponsors and creating events here at the Islands,” she said. “Except for all the new things here, it’s like I never left.” Missy has been married to Banks Burgess of the well known Banks & Shane band for a number of years. “I’m so proud of Lanier Islands and all there is to talk about here for families and for business people,” she said. “It’s a great asset to the area and the Williams family is so involved. If people haven’t been here in a while, they need to come back and see everything that’s here. This is like coming home for me to be back.”

P.T. boats have a fascinating history P.T. boats (short for Patrol Torpedo) have always fascinated me, not just their speed, which is exceptional at well over 40 knots, but their history in the missions they had in World War II. They were probably one of the best designed and built wooden boats ever to be constructed. Companies like Higgins and Huckins built them. There were many stories, hazardous sorties at sea searching for the enemy, making a strike and exiting at full speed. Many of us remember Jack Kennedy and P.T. 109, John Wayne in “They Were Expendable,” and Ernest Borgnine in “McHales Navy.” Now you can ride on a P.T. boat at the World War II Museum on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans for $350. For details, visit www.pt305.org. Their replica has the 3 Packard V12 engines, with machine guns. It’s billed as the “world’s only fully restored combat-veteran P.T. boat in operation today. PT 305 is also known as the USS Sudden Jerk by her crew. When I had Harbour Yachts Sales in Florida I had a customer with a P.T. boat. One day the older gentleman arrived at my office in a chauffeured driven Cadillac. He told me a story about him and his two childhood buddies that liked to fish. They all went off and made their fortunes and retired. They bought an old P.T. boat and made a fishing boat out of it. They took out the three Packard V12 and installed 8-71 Detroit diesels, fishing electronics and a diesel gen/set. Since his buddies had passed on, he wanted to sell it. So I went up to Tarpon Springs where it was docked and checked it out. When I stepped onboard I couldn’t help but stop a moment and imagine the history of the vessel. They were extremely well constructed. I found the log book on the bridge. The entries made from selling the catch wasn’t enough to support the boat, but at least the three of them had some fun. I sold the boat to a commercial fisherman who thought it was a great boat and he made good money with it. If you do go to New Orleans and take a ride on P.T. 305 send Lakeside a photo. I also ran across another boat similar to a P.T. boat, built more like a Coast Guard cutter 83’. It belonged to the Southern Yacht Brokers Association and one month we had our meeting at the Clearwater Yacht Club. One of the Ft. Lauderdale brokers said they were coming by boat, but

Mike Rudderham Captain’s Comments

they didn’t say how large or what make. When they arrived it was an 80’ wooden boat called the “Stinger.” Turns out it was the lead boat in the “Bay of Pigs” fiasco. It was called Stinger because it was attack ready. It had numerous machine guns on both port and starboard sides which were nicknamed stingers. This was a vessel with quite a history. Bugs be gone After you’ve had a great day cruising you anchor in a favorite cove and sit in your boat’s cockpit to relax. Just about the time you are about to enjoy snacks and a cocktail, here come the mosquitoes to the party. Well, Thermacell R45 repeller is designed to repel all manner of mosquitoes. It creates a 15’x15’ zone of bug free protection. It’s good for a flybridge, cockpit or sundeck. Simply turn it on and the zone check monitor shows blue when the device has been activated. It also has a belt clip to help protect you when walking around the decks. Cost is only $35 and you won’t smell like mosquito repellent. Details: www.thermacell.com. Toyota test This summer Toyota will be conducting a feasibility study of hybrid boats leading up to and coinciding with the Tokyo Bay 2020 Olympics. They are utilizing two types of power generators. A 265 H.P. gas inboard and a 48 H.P. electric motor and the Ponam 28V boat. This could be the sign of big things to come across the entire industry. Stay tuned. Marlin bill dangerous? I have often wondered if any bill fish have ever charged a boat’s hull and penetrated it. In Costa Rica where bill fishing is popular they have, indeed, had this happen with cold molded wooden hulls. In fact they carry emergency plugs just in case. Attacks from angry bill fish are par for the course for top game boats in prolific waters. Can you imagine telling your insurance company that hole in your hull was made by a fish? Boat inspections Most boats built today are all fiberglass or a derivative like carbon fiber. They don’t offer many

problems. But older boats that have fiberglass over wood need checking to be sure no separation has occurred. If it has it needs to be corrected immediately before dry rot starts. Check transom and any hardware like tow rings, engine bolts, etc. Anything that was installed through the transom should have been coated with a sealer. If you find problems, repair correctly and make sure you use sealer. Check your deck to hull joints along with hatches. Repair any problems you have so you won’t have any major problems on the water. Replacing a wood covered fiberglass transom is a big job and is expensive. Checking these items will make sure you have safe cruising and longer boat life. Laughing after boat shows Most boating writers give a list of some of the boats they checked out. It’s impossible to cover all boats even if you are trying to pick the most popular one. Invariably, in the next month’s magazines’ Letters to the Editor section there will be a few readers who will ask: “Why didn’t you pick a Hinckley like I own?” Another might say he’d like to see a Boston Whaler, because he owned two of them. The truth is there is hardly a bad boat among all boats if they are being used properly. Myself, I like Bertrams, I’ve fished them and sold them. But it doesn’t mean that a ChrisCraft, Hatteras, or Viking isn’t a good boat. Remember, buy the boat that’s in your price range that will do the job for you and you will be happy. Houseboats and cruisers Boats that stay in the water should be hauled once a year if in fresh water. The hull needs to be cleaned, which will give you better economy. All thru-hull fittings should be inspected, and any faulty ones should be replaced. If your boat is in saltwater you have to haul every three months or so to stay ahead of barnacles. Also, some new bottom paint could give you more time between hauls. Don’t forget to check your props for damage and zincs for wear and replace when needed. Log everything you have done in your maintenance log and mark the date you need to haul the boat again. Practice safe boating. Be courteous and I’ll see you on the water. Mike Rudderham is a veteran marine surveyor with more than 40 years experience in the marine industry.

A LANIER JEWEL ON THE NORTH END Chattahoochee Country Club undergoes $3 million renovation Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Jane Harrison oaters navigating the variegated shorelines between Boling Bridge and Thompson Bridge might miss a Lake Lanier jewel almost hidden from the main channel. Thousands of motorists driving by daily never enter a cul-de-sac behind a “CCC”-etched stone marquee. But beyond that sign, tucked into a lakeside cove, an amenity-rich peninsula awaits an exclusive set. The Chattahoochee Country Club, steeped in Gainesville history, adorned in elegance, and coveted for classy charity galas, is completing a $3 million renovation aimed at turning the oft-overlooked north lake venue into a destination by water and land. “People don’t drive into our cove. Boaters think we’re just another neighborhood community with docks … I don’t think people understand our amenities,” said Matthew Collins, Chattahoochee Country Club general manager. “People just don’t know about us.” The members-only oasis on the sparsely developed north shore has undergone a make-over aimed to satisfy long time patrons and bring in a younger crowd.

lining between sand-colored tiles. Sunbathers recline in shallow water on in-pool permanent lounge chairs, while hungry swimmers place orders at a snack bar pavilion with an expanded kitchen. Below the planter-lined pavilion, the azure waters of Lake Lanier shimmer. A manicured path leads to the marina compound, where wayfarers on water can disembark for casual al fresco fare at the pavilion, fine dining at the clubhouse or a cocktail at either. Or, they can stay on their boat, phone a meal order to the front desk, and have it delivered to their cabin. A new cruiser dock invites overnight country club stays in slips that accommodate 44’ and 50’ yachts. Built by local marine contractor, Boat Dock Works, the new Dock E is underlain with 2’x 2’ custom concrete pavers, illuminated by pedestal lanterns, and encased in galvanized steel. The pool and marina upgrades, including additional restrooms and bar facilities, contribute to a resort environment rooted in the club’s established infrastructure: a clubhouse that can host 400-person banquets and intimate gatherings in elegant quarters, a lake-view restaurant and bar, a fully equipped fitness facility, and nine tennis courts, three of which are clay. The 18-hole golf course a short distance from the club’s gate is actually owned and managed by the city of Gainesville. The upgrades are fetching a new generation of members, millennials and families with young children. Longtime members are excited about reinvestment into facilities that over the years have PHOTO BY JANE HARRISON survived destruction by fire, colGeneral Manager Matthew Collins lapse under snow, and economic is shown at the new covered dock. ups and downs. “Seventy-five percent of our Renovations finished this sumnew members last year were mer are eliciting attention as the young families with kids,” said 13-acre neck of land transforms Collins, a 44-year-old father of into resort mode for fun-seeking families and boaters looking for a two elementary aged children. that most reside within a 15 mile radius of the club. Club president Don Grimsley, 43, father of four ages 6-17, also reflects the young family demographic diving into the country club life. Compared to the cost of joining other country clubs “it’s the best deal going,” he said. The rarity of its placement on a peninsula with a marina adds value. “I’ve toured a lot of clubs … I think ours is second to none.” Club officials conducted research for two and a half years and got input from members in focus groups to format the club’s first major renovations since a smaller project five years ago enlarged the clubhouse bar. Why now? “It needed it,” Collins said. “The marina was getting old,” he said, plus members wanted a revamped pool and adjoining splash zone for kids. They were willing to finance improvements through initiation fees from new members, monthly fees, and reinvestment of operational profit. “We’re always reinvesting,” Grimsley said. Golf, Lake Lanier and prominent Gainesville citizens figure into the club’s evolution, as presented in a 1950-1986 club history booklet. Chattahoochee Country Club originated in 1950 as shovels broke ground on Buford Dam and Gainesville’s golf course lay in the inundation’s path. The early club centered on a nine-hole golf course the Civilian Conservation Corps built in the 1930s where Longwood Park is See Shore Lines, page 43

Other interesting facts about CCC • The club originally consisted of about 700 acres between Thompson Bridge Road and the peninsula at the end of Club Drive. It club now consists solely of the 13-acre peninsula behind the gate and one acre on Thompson Bridge where the stone marquee stands. “We don’t manage anything outside the gates (except the sign),” said Matthew Collins, general manager. • Gainesville movers and shakers have shaped the club’s evolution since the 1950s, among them: Jesse Jewell, poultry processing innovator; Tom Paris, downtown hardware and self-storage facility developer; Paul L. Turner and John H. Davis, insurance company founders; and others whose names appear on local institutions, roads and businesses (Leslie Quinlan, Bill Slack, Rafe Banks, Charlie Thurmond). • The current $3 million renovation is the second largest expenditure in club history, the first being in the mid-1980s when the club authorized $3.7 million to construct and furnish the current clubhouse, build a new pool, purchase exercise equipment, and upgrade the tennis facilities and docks. • Fewer than 10 people attended the club’s first New Year’s Eve party in 1959 when host Dick Smith grilled steaks, baked potatoes, prepared salads and mixed drinks. The club is now a major destination for social gatherings, charity events, and galas, including Mother’s Day, Easter and Halloween celebrations that attract 600850 attendees. • To become a member, club prospects must get sponsorship from three members and pay initiation and membership fees. Officials won’t disclose the cost of membership. In 1985, when the last major renovations were announced, members paid a $250-$750 initiation fee and $40 per month. Stock fees for members older than 30 ranged from $1,100 to $2,750. • Courses and programs for members include fitness classes, tennis lessons, wine tastings, mixology lessons, margarita mixers, water aerobics, and chef-led cooking classes. • Phase 2 renovations will include improvements to docks adjacent to the new E Dock. • Future plans include expansion of youth tennis and swim teams and art/culture camps for kids. • A strip of land accessible from the club marina compound connects the club to a Corps-owned island on Lake with two miles of hiking trails. - compiled by Jane Harrison

• Shore Lines Continued from page 42 now. Golfers socialized in a clubhouse in an old farmhouse off Pearl Nix Parkway where Centennial Arts Academy was later built. Pro golfer Tommy Aaron, 1973 Master’s champion, grew up in that house. He helped his father, Charlie Aaron, mow the greens. The youngster honed his swing on that primitive course off a dirt path. He likely crossed paths with Jesse Jewell, poultry processing innovator who built the modern industry in Gainesville, and other local businessmen. They wanted a place in the dry to play golf, so they chartered the Gainesville

Country Club. It became Chattahoochee Country Club in 1954 after officers found a new site up river. Before flood water started creeping up the Chattahoochee River toward Gainesville, the club’s early members rallied 225 Gainesville citizens to sign guarantee notes of $5,000 and $1,000 to borrow money to purchase 700 acres on Thompson Bridge Road. The club then sold 158 acres to the city for the golf course. An architectural student took on the country club design as a course project. Since the city lacked ex-

pertise to build a golf course, the club did it. Officers raised money, members donated money and civic clubs planted flowers and picked up rocks. Charter member Tom H. Paris, downtown hardware store owner, led fundraising and enriched the greens, so to speak. According to club history, area golfers almost ran Paris out of town when he spread the fairways with Gainesville’s abundant natural resource: chicken manure. By 1960, the club had built a $35,000 lakeside pavilion with a kitchen, dining, and slot machines; two small boat docks; and a beach with a swimming pier. Officers voted to take out the slot machines in January 1961. Fire destroyed the pavilion in April that year, the night after slot machines were reinstalled. Barely a year earlier, the club’s boat docks had collapsed in a March snow storm. The club began its current configuration in the mid-1980s, after it began selling lots on East Lake Drive to a private developer to help finance construction of the current clubhouse. It also built a new pool and authorized about

$3.7 million to get “the total club facilities including the tennis facilities and docks into first class condition,” according to club history. The renovations completed this summer continue that first class tradition, appealing to a new generation of members as well as old timers. “We have two young children and are looking forward to making great memories with them,” said Gainesville insurance professional Brett Turner, 31. “My family is especially excited

about the pool updates.” A jean-clad late-middle aged fellow talking with a sales agent in the clubhouse living room recently expressed excitement about spending sunset years at the club. “I want a place where I can dock my boat, go the bar and get a cocktail, have a nice meal, and maybe get a steam,” he said. Turns out, he’d come to the right place, a slice of land-based comfort surrounded by water where lake lovers, young and old, can experience the county club life.

Home and garden tidbits keep you cool during summer heat When it seems like the only ways to stay cool are heading to the lake and the pool or staying indoors, look inside your home for some timely upgrades and decorating tips. WSB-FM Radio’s Home Fix-It Guy Dave Baker, admittedly not into décor, recently sent out some simple tips to help with decorating challenges and opportunities. Here’s his list of the five most frequent things that go wrong with home decorating with my bit of elaboration (and in some cases advice that I need to take!): Diversify your room lighting – don’t rely on one source of light, especially if it’s an overhead fixture. Add lamps of varying heights, mixing both table-top lamps and floor lamps for a softer look. Lower your artwork – Artwork is meant to be seen; it’s not just intended to fill wall space. Hang the top of the art no higher than six feet and place the center of interest at or slightly above eye level for average-height people. A side note: If you’re hanging multiple artwork on the same wall,

Gilmer County and Ellijay are hidden jewels in the Georgia mountains Mother Nature and so much more are alive and well near the sparkling waters of the Cartecay, Ellijay and Coosawattee rivers in Gilmer County near the historic village of Ellijay. The rivers and mountains of this area are a cool place to spend a few days discovering a hidden beauty that is off the beaten track. Unique boutiques, antiques shops, outdoor outfitters, lodging options and a revitalized downtown create a one-of-a-kind experience less than an hour by car north of Atlanta. Visitors find a destination that includes hiking and biking trails, healthy olive oils, handmade soaps and Himalayan salt crystals at specialty shops in and around Ellijay. One can tube, fish or kayak the rivers or boat on Carter’s Lake. Wherever you go around Gilmer County ... adventure awaits, and you can check out the possibilities by going to www.ExploreTheEllijays.com. Wine has become a huge draw to Ellijay and Gilmer County in recent years, and soon after entering Gilmer County, I would highly recommend a stop at the spacious Engelheim Vineyards (www.engelheim.com) to taste their interesting wines and have an enlightening conversation with owner, Gary Engel. All of his wines are good, but his Sweet Molly, which he says is the “Southern Belle” version of his Traminette, is the best! A great place to stay for the night is the old Martyn Farm House (www.themartynhouse. com) just on the outskirts of Ellijay. It’s a great “home away from home” and they also offer glamping for the more hardy souls. The Martyn House in Towne is their funky but comfortable breakfast restaurant that seems to attract all of the wine and artsy crowd and many of the local business people.

The oldest winery in Gilmer County is the Cartecay Vineyards (www.cartecayvineyards.com) that was built around a chimney left from a burned out farm house. The land had been inactive for a long time, so the vineyard was created by combining the original farm layout with the specific needs of a vineyard. Wine tasting, live music and weddings are an important part of this unique winery. The owner, Larry Lykins, has been very influential in helping other wine growers get started in the area. Most everyone in Gilmer wine country stops for lunch at the Crossroads Grocery to enjoy simple but tasty food and entertaining stories from owner, Ryals Cheek. They are located at: 8994 Highway 52 East, Ellijay. The final winery on any wine quest should be the elegant Chateau Meichtry (www.chateaumeichtry.com) sporting a two-story wine tasting facility and an outdoor deck with a view. The actual winery and home sits high on a hill surrounded by the vineyards and is beautiful to see! Conclude any foray into the Gilmer County wine country in style with a palate pleasing visit to Ellijay’s own, Lee’s on River

The Martyn House farm house, above, and menu, left. Glamping is available at The Martyn House Farm, below.

Street at the 1907 (www.the1907. com). Mouth watering cuisine, fine wines, friendly service and local music in a laid back atmosphere is the perfect way to end a day of wine tasting! Gilmer County is changing fast, but the wonderful folks up there are also trying to maintain a glimpse of their past. It is very different from many small towns in the Blue Ridge Mountains ... including being very pet friendly. I found it to be very welcoming and naturally beautiful with remarkably good wines and mouthwatering food, and summer is a great time to visit this beautiful area! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide. Chateau Meichtry, left. The best place for lunch in Gilmer County wine country, right top. Live music is a standard at most vineyards on weekends, far right. The Cartecay Vineyards were built around this famous chimney, near right.

Lakeside reporter’s traveling notebook

Legendary trip back in time: Galapagos adventure By Pamela A. Keene Expectations became reality as we landed at the airport on Batra in the Galapagos Islands. In the land known for such animal oddities as blue-footed boobies and flightless cormorants, we spent eight days discovering volcanic islands, sandy beaches, underwater reefs, land tortoises and sea turtles, penguin, sea lions and what life is like without predators to make wildlife fearful. As the second part of the three-week journey to Ecuador that my husband Rick and I took earlier this year, we made the central part of the Galapagos Islands home aboard the Galaxy II, a 16passenger private boat operated by Overseas Adventure Travel. Our guide Jessica and our nine fellow passengers made more than a dozen stops along the way, anchoring offshore and taking 8passenger Zodiacs on several excursions each day. We visited inland waterways to see birds and wildlife, walked along lava-encrusted islands where nothing grows except land iguanas, snorkeled and swam with sea turtles, starfish and myriad underwater wonders. On our trip of more than 300 miles by boat, we crossed the Equator twice, and circumnavigated a handful of the islands to visit nearly a dozen points of interest, from the Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz where an active Galapagos tortoise breeding program is under way, and the red-sand beaches of Rabida, colored by high amounts of iron in the sand. We were among the first peo-

Tourism is strictly regulated, and for good reason. As more human encroachment finds its way there, the environmental balance is even more precarious. Tourists must be accompanied by certified guides who agree to abide by the regulations and ensure that their visitors do as well. A huge “push-me/pull-me” debate is evident by the conflict be-

tween the environmentalists and developers. The Galapagos has been repeatedly compromised by the introduction of non-native flora and fauna, upsetting the delicate balance that’s been in place for millions of years. Many of the animals there have no natural predators, so they show no fear when humans come near. We See Galapagos, page 70

ple to see the return of Lonesome George, the famous 90-year-old land tortoise who had occupied an island all by himself for years. He died in 2012 and his body was sent to the New York Museum of Natural History for DNA testing and preservation. My husband had seen George in his native habitat more than a decade ago when Rick was SCUBA diving on a live-aboard boat. It was a great surprise to learn that just 10 days before we arrived on this trip, the taxidermied Lonesome George returned to his native land to a specially built climate-controlled building. The 137-mile long archipelago in the Pacific Ocean that straddles the Equator holds the secrets to survival of the fittest. Little did Charles Darwin know when, as part of a 5-year seafaring roundthe-world journey in the 1830s that he would become a household name the world over. His

theories of adaptation of species are often confused with the theory of evolution, a fine-line distinction among scientists, but noteworthy just the same. As the first-ever World Heritage Site, so named in 1978, the Galapagos Islands are part of the Galapagos National Park Service. It’s also a UNESCO site, protected from development.

• Galapagos Continued from Page 66 were able to walk right up to – but not touch – lazy sea lions basking on benches, land tortoises out for a casual stroll to forage for lunch, and the thousands of land iguanas that blended in with the landscape. Several islands have hotels, restaurants and commercial businesses, including Baltra Island, home of the area’s airport; Isabela; Santa Cruz; and Floreana. A couple of environmental resorts are located on the main islands, but visitors can also stay in hostels. Most of the land accommodations are what some travelers would call “roughing it,” but our time on the ship was very comfortable with chef-prepared meals, cabins larger than most hotel rooms in Europe, and our own private baths. People live simply in the Galapagos where there are two seasons. December to May is warm and wet; and June to December is cool and dry. We were lucky that the rains only came at night; however, the humidity made the temperatures in the 90s seem like a steam bath. Every day held new adventures and discoveries. We walked

I spent my days draped with two cameras and a couple of lenses. Truth be told, I have yet to edit the more than 8,000 images I shot while we were there. I’m saving that task for a cold rainy Pelican. day this winter so that I can relive ALL PHOTOS BY PAMELA A. KEENE my time in the Galapagos.
