Game of Cones spurs epic search for frozen treats is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. By Pamela A. Keene For a really cool way to enjoy frozen treats around Lake Lanier this summer, play “Game of Cones,” a new promotion created by the Lake Lanier Convention and Visitors Bureau. From the end of May through October 1, participants can go on an ice-cream and summer treat scavenger hunt for a chance to win prizes. “We’ve concocted this fabulous way for locals and visitors to learn more about local businesses and what they have to offer,” said Stacey Dickson with the Lake Lanier Convention and Visitors Bureau. “With nearly a dozen locally created and/or locally sourced cool treats to choose from, this is a fun way to get out to see the area, learn about special offers and discounts, and enjoy some amazing summer sweets.” Here’s how the game works: On a smartphone, download the Flok app from iTunes or Google Play and join “Game of Cones.” The free app is a loyalty cardbased program that registers users for notifications about special offers and promotions. “All of our locations will be giving discounts
and offers throughout the next several months,” Dickson said. “Each time you make a purchase at one of the businesses, you can get your card punched. When the card is filled, you can win a prize.” Using a play on some of the features from “Game of Thrones,” the CVB has created three geographic areas where summer treats can be found. In The North, visit Jaemor Farms for its soft-serve ice creams made from peach, strawberry and pineapple fruit puree. Sweet Acre Farms Winery has created a frozen wine slushy and Mountain Fresh Creamery offers 25 flavors of fresh-churned ice cream. Queen City (Gainesville’s official nickname) is the showplace of homemade milk shakes at Collegiate Grill, coffee and smoothies at Sweet Magnolias, Jake’s Ice Cream at Inman Perk, and goodies created by Atlanta’s King of Pops at Downtown Drafts. Check out La Mejor De Michoacan on Atlanta Highway for icy and creamy pops, plus home-made ice creams including pineapple and chili pepper. Explore Beyond the Wall in

downtown Flowery Branch for hand-churned small-batch gourmet ice cream at Liberty Candy and New Orleans Snoballs at Calliope Sweets. Head toward Braselton for frosty beverages including Cha Cha Chai, frozen cupcake and frozen mocha with toasted marshmallows. Mayfield Dairy located just off I-85 offers tours and tastings of its fresh-made ice cream. “All people need is a smart
phone, or pick up a wallet card at any of the participating locations or at the Welcome Center at Hall County Government Center in Gainesville on Browns Bridge Road,” Dickson said. “See how many of these treats you can try out and enjoy this summer.” For more information about Game of Cones and the area’s various locations for tasty frozen treats, visit www.discoverlakelanier.com.

It’s about the kids: Here’s where the money goes from the Family Poker Run By Pamela A. Keene The Pirates of Lanier Poker Run has always been about the kids. From the time it was founded eight years ago, original board members were adamant that the funds raised would be donated to children’s charities and stay local. But just who are the charities that benefit from the world’s largest charity poker run? And what do they do that makes them special? Lakeside on Lanier takes a look at the four charities who receive funds from the annual Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run. While you may be familiar with the names of the organizations, here’s a bit more about these charities and the work they do in Hall County, North Georgia and across the state. Camp Sunshine A young Ronnie Gordon was a camper at Camp Sunshine, diagnosed with leukemia. For his father Dan it provided an opportunity to give back. While Ronnie was a camper, Dan would volunteer at Camp Sunshine. “He helped us quite a bit, said Sally Hale, who’s been with Camp Sunshine since it was founded in 1987. “When Dan and other board members were considering which charities to support, Camp

We’ve been able to reach an audience who didn’t even know about us before, thanks to Lanier Partners. To learn more about Camp Sunshine, to volunteer or donate, visit www.mycampsunshine.com. Camp Twin Lakes Nestled within Fort Yargo State Park near Winder, Camp Twin Lakes hosts more than 10,000 young people and adults each year who have serious illnesses, disabilities and other life challenges. Summer is the busy season, when more than 3,500 campers from 60 partner organizations arrive for weekend and week-long sessions to use the facilities and resources at the camp. Sunshine was suggested. We’ve been associated with Lanier Partners ever since. Camp Sunshine provides support for children with cancer and their families, working in tandem with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and its AFLAC Cancer Center to offer nearly 150 programs each year. From summer camp at Camp Twin Lakes for young cancer patients to trips for teens to places like Washington, D.C., its programs are comprehensive and far-reaching. “We have camps and programs for families, teens and siblings of cancer patients, Hale said. “And we offer yearround recreational, educational and support programs to help
children with cancer have opportunities for normal development. Camp Sunshine is one of many organizations that uses facilities and resources at Camp Twin Lakes. It sends 400 children to summer camp there, but beyond camp, the programs and services at Camp Sunshine help all year round. “The funds from Lanier Partners helps us in so many ways, Hale said. “In addition to the fees we pay to Camp Twin Lakes to send our campers there, we have other expenses, such as program supplies, medical supplies and costs to train volunteers and staff. Camp Sunshine also provides scholarships for graduate campers to help de-

Keep your eyes on your Lowrance HDS and when you see a shallow (20 foot or less) tree, power up and “jump” your rigs over the trees. We use 1 ounce buck tail jigs on a 3 ounce 4 arm frame. Pearl or chartreuse worms or chad bodies are the preferred trailers. Vary your speed between 2.7 to 3.4 mph. This report was filed by Ken West, www.bigfishon.com, 404 561-2564. Contact us on our web site. Crappie fishing For the avid crappie fishermen who don’t mind dodging the traf-
fic on the lake, crappie fishing remains good. The early morning bite is best, from 30 minutes before daylight to about 9:30 a.m.; later if cloudy. Target deeper docks with structure below the surface, especially if you can find a dock with a sizable brush pile just outside it, which is an added bonus. The docks that are producing have 20 to 30 foot depths, and are closer to main creek channels. With this condition, these fish have the best of both worlds, the cover of the brush pile, then the shade of the dock during the middle of the day. If you can find a dock with an active beaver, that is even better, as fresh vegetation is continuous. Look for limbs and branches sticking out of a dock. Also target submerged brush piles in at least 20 to 30 feet of water. Fish the brush pile from all angles. This time of year, the fish are holding tight on the brush. Soft body and hair jigs are producing fish. Because the fish are deep, the sensitivity of the bite seems less, so watching your line is very important. If you see or sense any unusual movement, set the hook!
For the night owls, bridge fishing is picking up. The sign of a good bridge is if you see dangling ropes from above. That typically means it is being fished by regular night fishermen. You will need a fishing light, and it can easily take an hour or two for the light to draw the bait and the bait to draw the crappie. So be patient, stay safe, and wear your life jacket. This report was filed by Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler s Club, www.laniercrappieanglers.net. LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Venue manager resigns to begin new career path By Jane Harrison The Gainesville Hall ’96 Board is seeking a new Lake Lanier Olympic Park manager after Morgan House announced he is leaving his position to pursue a career opportunity in real estate. House served three years as the park’s first man- House ager, helping transition it from a jointly managed Gainesville/Hall County park to a private nonprofit facility. He agreed to stay on at the park until a suitable replacement is found and to assist in training the new manager. Reached by cell phone while he was moving docks after a national canoe/ kayak competition, he spoke about how he grew in the job that took him from Olympic hopeful paddler to the board room. “I’ve learned so much here. It’s been an amazing experience working with so many different people, from athletes to government officials, local and international. It’s been great,” he said. House, 30, became the face of LLOP after GH ’96 tapped him over a field of more than 50 applicants from around the country in 2014. During his tenure and leadership, GH ’96 invested $1.1
million renovating LLOP to host the 2016 Pan American Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships along with 2016 and 2017 American Collegiate Rowing National Championships. Highlights of his work include the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 1996 Olympics (Rio on the Water) and securing the bid for the 2018 World Dragon Boat Championships. Additionally, he introduced the community at large to the park, venturing to bring concerts, movies, weddings and festivals to the plaza overlooking the Olympic channel that once inspired his own Olympic quest. After attempts to qualify for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics as a Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club athlete, House laid down the competitor’s paddle to coach the local team and later applied for the manager slot. “He was certainly the right guy at the right time,” said GH ’96 Board Chair Mimi Collins. “While we celebrate Morgan’s successes and the lasting legacy he has created here during his paddling and professional career, we are saddened by his departure.” Collins said House informed her of his interest in a new career path a couple of weeks before his announcement at the May 19
board meeting. “Gainesville Hall ’96 has begun a succession plan for the park’s leadership and will execute a search for Morgan’s replacement over the next few weeks,” she said, adding that the board’s utmost concern is continuity and stability for the park. She expects House to stay involved in preparation for the 2018 Dragon Boat World Championship, for which he submitted the winning bid. Collins said the board has “nothing but accolades and positive feelings” for the manager that ushered a new culture into the park where Olympic paddlers and rowers competed in the 1996 Games. According to a GH ’96 press release, under House’s management LLOP has seen an increase in rental and park usage and expanded visibility. In 2014 LLOP’s economic impact was estimated at $4 million. Today, the economic impact is $10 million providing significant community exposure and business opportunities. House, who already has a real estate agent license, said he expects to work for a local office of Keller Williams Real Estate. He added he will stay active with LLOP and in his own athletic endeavors as a paddler and triathlete.

June 2017
June is a special month for me June is one of my absolute favorite months of the year. It’s the official beginning of summer, that time of year when everyone stops complaining about the cold and begin to complain about the heat! I am not trying to be humorous. OK, maybe a little but it’s true! Summer officially begins at 24 minutes past midnight on Wednesday, June 21st. Do you remember the first day of summer last year and what happened? 2016 was the first time in nearly 70 years that a full moon and the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice occur on the same day. The 2016 summer solstice’s full moon rose just as the Sun set. We won’t see that again this time around but it will of course, be the longest day of the year. We have certainly seen some good rainfall this past spring, however the lake is still way down below full summer pool. For the next 90 days, we will see a lot of evaporation. I bet you have no idea how much water will evaporate from the lake on a single day of sunshine and 90 degree heat. How about more than 100 million gallons! If we get an extended period of dry weather, like we usually do in June, that could really add up. The 90 day outlook, issued by the Climate Prediction Center, gives us a high probability of warmer than average temperatures this summer. Rainfall however,
remains questionable. There are too many variables, like the developGlenn ing El Nino, Sahara dust coming across the AtBurns lantic, and our own climate cycles to make a Lanier prediction. The CPC has Outlook given us a 50/50 shot of above or below average rainfall this summer. As for me, I am sticking with a “persistence” forecast. I believe we will see above average to near average rainfall. I hope enough to compensate for the evaporation with the warmer than average temperatures. One of the most wonderful things I have come to enjoy is being out on the lake at night and watching the June full moon rise. It’s usually great night fishing on the full moon. At least it has been for me. This month’s full moon occurs less than one day after reaching lunar apogee, the moon’s farthest point in its monthly orbit. The moon will be in full phase on June 9. You might notice a small yellow star near the moon that night. That would be the planet Saturn. That is not however, what will make this particular full moon special. It will be the farthest and smallest full moon of the year. Some people call it the “Mini Moon.” No matter what you call it, enjoy the beginning of summer. June is a special month, for sure! The Dam Store to be rebuilt after fire By Pamela A. Keene Nearly four years after a fire destroyed The Dam Store on Buford Dam Road in August 2013, owner George K. Floyd has received approval to rebuild. Demolition began in late May. “We’ll be doing new construction of a single-story building on the existing footprint,” Floyd said. “And the store will be consistent with the former Dam Store, selling bait and fishing
items as well as renting kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.” Floyd owns the Apalachicola Maritime Museum in Florida and has spearheaded several other projects in the Panhandle, including a wooden boat school and environmental education programs. He said that his vision for the rebuilt Dam Store is to connect Buford and Lake Lanier with projects that have been successful in Florida.
“Our wooden boat school in Apalachicola has been well received,” he said. “I hope that we can open a similar program here on Lanier.” Floyd also is working to promote the Blueway Trail that will eventually lead from the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River to the Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. He anticipates that the new Dam Store will be open in the next 12 to 18 months.
‘Use it or lose it’ applies to boating as well How many times have you heard that saying? It’s so true regardless how it is applied. Proficiency in boating is no exception. The concept is the very reason why US Coast Guard licenses or the International Standards are renewed every five years. Think of the amount of time spent on your boat if you are a weekend and holiday enthusiast. How does it compare in terms of time to other parts of your daily routine? Time is marching on ... so should your learning curve. Actual experience is the absolute best teacher of all. Boating safety training should be part of your mariner experience. There are a few different opinions in the professional maritime instructor community about the frequency regarding renewal of license and knowledge. My belief and witness tells me loud and clear that initially, know-how in planning and preparation are the introductory elements to safer boating. License renewal does little to solve that need but there are ways to always

be ready. Best practices often come in smaller portions, the trade secret to boating safety education. Look back and remember how it felt to “cram” for an exam after many hours of class! Now ask yourself ... did I learn anything in the process? Lesser units of training deliver the greatest success: both in duration of the seminar and the mastery of the content. Consider a safety class offered by the USCG Auxiliary, Power Squadron, or other institutions credentialed to offer this service. That’s only the beginning. Something I recommend: dedicate time
out of each trip to go over certain items with your passengers and crew. Such short briefings deliver benefits in numerous ways. Here’s a sample list of topics to cover or design your own based on your specific boating needs: • Life jackets • First Aid Kit • Fueling Operations • Person Overboard • Basic Weather Forecast • Steering and Throttle • Anchoring • Line Handling Take a few moments to go over these items each time you venture out on the water. Not only will it enrich the knowledge and protection of others, you will also garner added expertise of your skill sets as a safe boat operator. Additional information about this process can be found on the internet or contact me for more details. Oars lined the bank during the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta May 13-14 at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. Forty rowing teams from high schools across the Southeast raced in the U.S. Rowing junior regional regatta hosted by the Lake Lanier Rowing Club and Gainesville-Hall '96. Crews launched and disembarked from temporary docks set up along the grassy lakeside. The hosts set up the shoreline staging area because low water level created an angle too steep to connect docks to the platform behind the boathouse. Paddlers make their way across the lengthy and dry shoreline during the USACK National Team Trials.

A matching boat for the high-end sports car Many times a classy sports car is targeted for a matching boat design. Usually the boat has a similar design scheme and will borrow the car’s name. One of the first ones I remember was when Ferrari collaborated with Riva, the noted Italian luxury yacht builder in the ’60s. Corvette had a boat designed and named after it. The boat used the aftermarket Callaway engine and was built in the 1970s. Also Aston Martin/Quintessence Yachts and Mercedes Benz/Silver Arrows Marine had partnerships. Now Lexus has joined the fray with its one of a kind 42’ open sport yacht. The boat has been developed with Marquis Yachts in partnership with the car brand and features a radish gold fore deck that dazzles. The hull itself is equally cool thanks to carbonfiber reinforcing. Marquis Yachts’ familiarity with this material is one reason it was contracted to build the 42. The new vessel has seating for eight with a top speed of 43 knots. The boat is the result of working with diesel center Erabetti Design of Italy and Toyota Marine engineers. The world of luxury automakers has again shined its bright light on boat building for the time being. For more information go to: www.marquisyachts.com. The Bugatti Chiron is a near perfect car that there is, so Bugatti and its new “lifestyle partner” Palmer Johnson collaborated on “Niniette 66,” a trimaran hull shaped with Bugatti’s splashy styling elements. It’s offered with a two tone color scheme like the car. Only 66 will be made with the company’s online configurator where I could imagine what my Chiron-inspired yacht would look like with an onboard hot-tub and champagne bar. To design your own Niniette 66 go to: www.bugattininette66.org. I’ll bet you will have a lot of fun telling people it’s going to be your next boat. What’s next? My guess is a Tesla electric powered luxury runabout. I think that could happen in the near future. Here’s something I haven’t heard of, but it’s bound to follow the cars: an autonomous boat, that’s right one that drives itself. Maybe Google will collaborate with a boat company to build them. Stay tuned! Robots building boats Fiberglass boat building has come a long way from the old bucket of resin and a brush. Grand Banks is a notable builder of trawlers and Palm Beach

By Jane Harrison A summer of legal maneuvering stretches before Georgia and Florida state attorneys responding to a federal court officials’ report in a 2013 Florida lawsuit over water. The U.S. Supreme Court expected by May 31 to get Florida’s gripes with Special Master Ralph Lancaster’s ruling that denied the state’s claims. Florida accused Georgia of consuming more than its share of water from the river system that flows through both states and causing ecological and economic harm to Apalachicola Bay. The special master ruled that Florida failed to prove capping Georgia’s water use would remedy the situation downstream.
Lancaster wrote that water flow is controlled by the U.S. Corps of Engineers through five dams on the ApalachicolaChattahoochee-Flint rivers. Lake Lanier is the largest Corps reservoir in the ACF. Florida’s failure to target the Corps flawed its legal strategy. After Florida files exceptions to the special master’s report, Georgia has until July 31 to rebut. Florida then gets another go, with sur-replies due on or before Aug. 30. The court is expected to consider the case in its October 2017 term, which runs through September 2018. Justices often concur with special masters’ reports, but occasionally make exceptions.

By Pamela A. Keene Anglers from across the state will gather at Lake Lanier’s Laurel Park October 25-28 on the road to compete in the Bassmaster Classic. The group is returning to Lanier after several years. “This is a chance for amateur bass fishermen to qualify for the pinnacle event in all of bass fishing,” said Craig Monnin, vice president of the Georgia BASS Nation. “There’s a lot of money on the line for these competitors.” The Georgia qualifier is part of BASS
Nation fishing tournament trail that will culminate in March 2019 with the Bassmaster Classic. Top anglers from the Georgia event in October will advance to the BASS Nation Eastern Regional. Competitors from the 18 states in the Eastern Region along the East Coast will fish against each other in May 2018. This fall’s event will include high school and collegiate competitors in addition to adult amateur fishermen. For registration and more info, visit www.georgiabassnation.com.

Comments sought for security cameras on private docks By Pamela A. Keene The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reviewing its policy about the prohibition of security cameras on private docks. Area residents have until June 16 to express their opinions in writing about the possible policy change. “The Lake Lanier Association is in favor of the policy being repealed,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the organization. “From a public safety standpoint as well as property protection, it would be a benefit for homeowners to be able to install cameras on their docks.” The policy, according to the Corps, was based on concern for individual privacy of people on public land. “With the great majority of people on the lake having mobile
devices with video and photo capabilities, the concern is no longer applicable,” she said. “The ability of homeowners to install private security cameras on their docks has a number of positives, including personal property protection and personal safety. Additionally, with access to cameras, incidents can be documented.” Cloud said that the cameras could also be used to monitor and manage docks when water levels fluctuate, reducing the amount of dock debris. “As you know, our mission is Full Lake, Clean Lake, Safe Lake,” she said. “Allowing cameras on permitted docks helps us address two of our three priorities.” Comments can be emailed to Lanier.docks.cameras@usace.army.mil.

Bald eagle nesting numbers in Georgia soar The number of active bald eagle nests in Georgia reached a record high this year, according to the state’s Department of Natural Resources. Statewide aerial surveys detected 218 occupied nest territories. That eclipses the previous record of 210 in 2015 and marks the third straight year that more than 200 active bald eagle nests have been documented in Georgia. Mirroring a comeback across the species’ range, bald eagles have rebounded in the state from no known nests in 1970 to nests this year in at least 68 counties,
according to survey leader Bob Sargent. In the last 10 years, the number of occupied nest territories in Georgia has almost doubled. “The recovery of the bald eagle in Georgia is a truly inspiring success story. This is a 7-foot-wide soaring example of the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act,” said Sargent, a program manager with DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section. At least 142 of this year’s nests were successful, fledging a total of 218 young See Eagles, page 58

By Jane Harrison he trek from the land of anacondas, sloths and little dragon orchids to a new territory of king snakes, white tailed deer and pink lady slippers opened up a world of discovery for David Guzman. After years leading Amazon Rainforest tours in the lush, watery abode of piranhas and poison dart frogs, the native Ecuadorian now points out ospreys and herons to Lake Lanier tourists kayaking on the Chattahoochee inlet. Guzman, 43, naturalist at Don Carter State Park, finds the diverse ecosystem of the north Georgia lake every bit as enchanting as the South American wonderland of biodiversity that first lured him to a career in nature. He’s packed a park calendar with programs this summer and fall to get folks enthused about everything from animal bones to trilliums. “When people get into nature and explore, they get excited and want to know more,” Guzman said. He wants to educate others about the thrill and balm of nature that drew him into the wild as a kid. The story of how Guzman transitioned from guiding tours to the Galapagos, which are among Ecuador’s wildlife-rich territories, to leading paddle trips to Lanier’s Flat Creek Island began in his boyhood home of Quito. “My father died when I was three and my mother raised my brother and I. For a single mother raising two kids, she did well,” he said. In the Ecuadorian capital of nearly 3 million people, Guzman learned English, as required by state schools. “The types of friends I hung around with when I was young were not into partying all the time. We were into exploring nature and going camping, not going to discothèques.” But it was not until college while studying tourism management that Guzman first ventured into the Amazon Rainforest from Quito’s high perch in the Andes Mountains. “I immediately fell in love with it and realized my love of the outdoors would be my career,” he said. He cobbled work boots in a shoe factory to finance his early college education and networked with tour guiding groups to hone his hospitality
T
skills. After earning his degree, which is required to get a tour guide license in Ecuador, he took off on his own expedition, backpacking for two years across South America. Footing it through Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia, he soaked up the cultures, forests, and wetlands of the huge continent. “I explored and learned about people in the countries, their food, different plants and animals, different languages … new dialects I’d never heard. I got to work (tourist-related jobs) in a few places, like the Salt Flats in Bolivia, a hot spot for people from all over the world,” he said. He was awestruck by the vastness of the world’s largest water curtain, Iguazu Falls between Brazil and Argentina, where Devil’s Throat, the tallest of the 275 cataracts, drops nearly half a mile into a misty rainforest abyss. Licensed to lead and enriched from his journey, Guzman freelanced as a tour guide for lodges for six years, taking adventurers to the mountains, coasts and Galapagos Islands. On tours or in his own wanderings, he encountered many of the unique animals dwelling in megadiverse South American habitats: Sloths (“They’re so cute. People see their faces and fall in love with them,”) capivara (“They’re the largest rodent in the world,”)

anteaters, and anacondas. His heart settled near water, where the rainforest beckoned him most. That’s also where he met a young teacher touring the Amazon Rainforest with middle and high school students. The romance that began on water led to wedding vows two years later in a ceremony on a lake in the Amazon. “We put 10 canoes together and a Shaman (healing man) blessed us,” Guzman said. Afterward, David and Kelly made a trip to the courthouse to officially document their union. “Kelly loved Ecuador and was offered a university job in the capital,” Guzman said. After several years, the couple left South America for Kelly to teach in San Francisco. Kelly, who taught science, got a job offer in Georgia at Commerce Middle School, where she is now assistant principal. The move to the states uprooted Guzman from the environment that forged his own career. “In the beginning it was a big change. I was kind of afraid about what I was going to do. It was like starting over again,” he said. They agreed he would go back to school, enrolling first in California and later at thenGainesville College before ultimately earning a degree in Natural Resources Management and Recreation from the University of Georgia School of Forestry. His college internship at Watson Mill Bridge State Park in Comer was a “dream job,” he said. In 2015 he and Kelly visited Lake Lanier to explore the yearold Don Carter State Park. “I saw big potential in this park,” the first on Lanier, with its 1,300acres near Gainesville and Cleveland and close proximity to other environmental-based entities like Elachee Nature Science Center and the Gainesville Garden. He applied for the naturalist position and jumped right in to lead paddling trips, hikes to find native plants, and night walks to see animals near the shoreline. He tapped UGA for unique programs, like “CSI Goes Wild” in which a wildlife specialist performs forensics on animal skulls and feathers. On a recent Friday afternoon, Guzman led families on an “Animals and Their Signs” hike. He kneeled in the mud to help participants make plaster castings of animal tracks. That evening he planned to take beginning paddlers into a quiet cove to learn the strokes that have taken him from rainforest to a manmade lake.

What might seem like an anticlimax, coming from a country where giant tortoises roam and anteaters forage to lead hikes in north Georgia, has instead inspired Guzman. In his college studies and when making rounds at the state park, he’s found that nature always has something new to teach him. Native plants like pink lady slippers and scavengers like opossums are just as fascinating to him as the flora and fauna of his original homeland. He seems almost as excited about observing common corn snakes (“They’re so beautiful!”) as he is about viewing bald eagles soaring above the park. Guzman continues his natural education with everyday encounters outdoors and through stacks of books at home. “We read all the time,” he said. He and Kelly are outfitting their 4-year-old daughter, Gracie, with nature books and excursions for an “active, outdoor girl.” He displays a certain knack with children and their interminable questions about animals and occasional fear of walking a forest trail. Gracie “has taught me to be patient and to listen to them,” he said after a hike with kids who scampered at his heels and excitedly yelped “what’s this?” at nearly every turn. With kind eyes and a gentle voice, he’s escorted second graders on field trips on their first walk in the woods. He’s thrilled to awaken a child’s interest in nature. “I love it,” he said. Guzman also wants to bring more people of South and Central American heritage, like his, into Don Carter. He noted how Hispanic families “love to picnic”
and would enjoy the park’s opportunities for family times. His efforts to increase minority participation include school outreach programs, a new bilingual hike, and activity guides written in English and Spanish. Asked what intrigues him most about his habitat in Georgia, Guzman paused a moment. “The seasons … I had to get adjusted” to a climate far different from the equatorial tropics where daylight and dark hours are equal and the calendar is marked with either “rainy or dry seasons.” For Guzman, last winter meant he had to closet his park uniform and don landscaper’s duds. Fewer people venture to the park in the cold months and the naturalist has to pick up other work until spring. Guzman’s spring activity calendar bursts with the enthusiasm he stored up over the winter. Each week he’ll lead visitors in geocache contests, lakeside strolls to look for wildlife, and treks to find native orchids, plus day and night paddle excursions into the natural resource that launched his life’s work. The calm waters of Lake Lanier that edge Don Carter State Park may not have the breathtaking grandeur of Iguazu Falls nor do they ripple with alligator-like caimans; but as Guzman knows, those who pay attention can get chill bumps spying a white-tailed deer swim across a cove or seeing lavender blooms of wild irises signal spring’s arrival. He’s ready to lead others to natural discoveries that enrich their lives. Note: Activities at Don Carter State Park are listed in Lakeside’s Outdoor Calendar.

Swim buoy lines on dry ground at most Lanier beaches By Jane Harrison It’s a longer walk than usual to the water this summer at Lake Lanier beaches, where swim buoy lines rested on dry ground just before Memorial Day. The drought that dropped the lake eight feet below full pool created more room for beach towels and sand buckets, but shrunk designated swimming areas down to nothing at Corps parks around the lake. “All our beaches are that way at this time,” said Lanier Chief Ranger Chris Arthur. “Until we get rain, it’s going to be that way, unfortunately,” he said. “All our day use parks are still open regardless,” he added. “A lot of people don’t go straight to the beach.” When they’re not picnicking, fishing or fitness walking, there’s plenty of sand to sunbathe in at the near 20 Corps beaches. Those wanting to get their feet wet need to take heed of potential danger where the land meets the water. The Corps does not prohibit beach-goers from stepping over the buoy line to get in the water. However, there’s a risk. A steep drop off often lurks beyond the line. Feet easily slide on the slippery red lakebed into deep water. Arthur strongly recommends anyone getting in the water to wear a life jacket and to use extreme caution. He said the Corps provides loaner life jackets
at all its parks. On a hot Sunday afternoon in mid-May, children scampered past the white sand at Little Hall Park into the mud rimmed water to cool off. Parents of two young girls strapped life jackets on their kids before they joined others playing in shallow water. The swim line laid useless on the sand. Julian Valdez, of Commerce, brought his wife, mother and three kids to the beach at Don Carter State Park the Saturday before Memorial Day Weekend. The family trekked across the sand past the swim line and hiked through weedy growth to the water. “It’s a little challenging, the water’s so low. And it’s muddy. You can definitely see the
effects of the drought,” Valdez said. “But as long as the kids enjoy themselves, we’ll try to make do with what we’ve got.” Denise Hogan, of Gainesville, had the same idea as her young daughter joined a friend at the state park beach. “They’ll amuse themselves and amuse us,” she said. She observed that the water was “down to the clay” underfoot in the shallows. “I’ve watched the lake go up and down over the years,” she said, adding that she worries it could sink to the historic 20 feet below full pool recorded in 2008. At River Forks Park, leased by Hall County, goose tracks outnumbered footprints on the expansive beach. The machine-smoothed sand extended

to a narrow brown rim at the water’s edge. The maintenance crew did pretty good work blending the sand into the exposed lakebed on the gradual slope. The park has no swim buoy line, which didn’t matter to the dozen or so Canada geese floating near shore on a sunny Friday afternoon. “We’ve got some swings, a pier and sand volleyball” at War Hill Park, said Lisa Henson, Director, Dawson County Parks & Recreation Department. She said folks don’t need to get in the water to enjoy the county-leased park, where the swim line only floats when the lake is at full pool. She also recommended anyone getting in the water wear a personal flotation device. Arthur said the Corps replenished sand, removed rocks and

glass, and inspected all beaches at the beginning of the season. It does not install additional sand to cover up exposed lake bed when the level is down. It’s a different story at Lanier Islands Resort, where a half mile broad strip of white sand foots beach-goers all the way into the water. “The buoy lines are out there,” said Missy Burgess, Resort public relations director. “We have more sand than most beaches. We’ve been doing this so long, we’re experienced when the water level gets low.” It helps that Big Beach has a gradual slope and plenty of sand that extends into the lakebed. Despite the drought, “we’re excited and ready for the season,” Burgess said. “When it rains a little, we’re always glad … especially when it happens at night.”

Make your landscape inviting and welcoming with pergolas A garden gate, a graceful pergola or a simple pathway of stepping stones can make your landscape welcoming and inviting. Adding a hardscape element provides a focal point, a designated entry point or a place for enhancing the colors and textures of your yard, especially when you bring in vines and trailing plants. If you have a second-floor deck with a patio below, consider using the space between the vertical supports as the framework for your pergola or archway. This can create an inviting entrance to your outdoor living pace. Perhaps a free-standing pergola with a bench or swing is more appealing? If so, select a spot that would work for a rock pathway or stepping stones to encourage people to walk up to it and sit for a bit. Building the foundation Whether you choose a pre-fabricated pergola or design and build your own, consider the style and construction in relation to your home’s exterior. Redwood is an excellent con-

Pressure-treated lumber painted to match the trim of your home, complimented by crosscross lattice work, can offer a strong support for roses or cross vines. Many retailers – both in-store and online – sell vinyl pergolas, archways and gates that can be easily and quickly installed. Select a color that blends with your home’s colors and style. Selecting the materials is an important first step in adding any hardscape. Remember that once
the plants or vines have established themselves on the pergola, you’ll be limited in doing routine maintenance. Choose the material based on the types of plants you hope to use. Perfect plants From climbing roses to vines like Carolina Jasmine or Confederate Jasmine, nurseries and box retailers offer a wide range of colors, scents and growing habits. Choose plants for their bloom cycles or their scents. Will they be green all year or do they lose their leaves in the winter? Lady Banks Rose is a beautiful bloomer with clusters of yellow blossoms in the spring. But once it has flowered for the season, all you’ve got left is cascading branches of green. Carolina Jasmine, with its delicate baby-powder scent, also blossoms in the spring, then provides an evergreen backdrop for the rest of the year. Confederate Jasmine has strongly scented white starshaped flowers that repeat all summer. Make sure you like the
fragrance before committing to this plant close to your home. It may be more suited for another place in your landscape as a conversation starter to admire from afar. Crossvine, similar to trumpet vine, has deep orange trumpetshaped blooms in late spring. It’s another evergreen that may need a bit of pruning from time to time to keep it from taking over the space. Coral honeysuckle is another fast-grower with a sweet scent and pretty yellow, orange and red blooms. You can train it to fill in empty spaces by regular pruning. Clematis, with its beautiful and varied flowers that range from doubles and triples to larger saucer-sized single blossoms, can come back year after year. Google pergolas to view the different types, designs and uses. You’ll be surprised at the number of choices that can add beauty and value to your home’s landscape. Pamela A. Lakeside reporter’s traveling notebook
Heading south to new lands and a different culture By Pamela A. Keene When you arrive in a new (to you) country at midnight-darkthirty, it’s hard to imagine what’s in store for the next three weeks. But when you fly to Quito, Ecuador, non-stop from Atlanta, it’s pretty darn dark and very late before you arrive at your hotel that’s an hour’s drive from Ecuador’s newest airport. That didn’t stop my husband Rick and me from embracing life on the equator in March with five days in the Amazon headwaters on the Rio Napo and eight days on a 16-passenger ship island hopping in the Galapagos, and some spoke-and-wheel adventures from our home base of Quito, the country’s capital. Rick had lived for a while in Ecuador and he had visited the Galapagos on a live-aboard SCUBA diving boat, but this trip was a first for me. After three weeks in Southeast Asia last year, I was ready for a trip that didn’t involve significant time-zone changes. Ecuador was just the ticket. In standard time it’s just the same as home. Daylight saving time began in the States while we were there, so it was only a one-hour difference back here in Flowery Branch. Of course, our flight home left South America at midnight, so we outsmarted Atlanta’s rush-hour traffic by landing around 6 a.m. So much for body clocks and normal sleep for a few days! Quito Located between two mountain ranges at 9,350 feet above sea level, Quito is the highest capital city in the world. Agriculture is a major economic driver, especially the florist-quality longstemmed roses grown in hundreds of greenhouses that dot the mountainside. Ecuador provides the lion’s share of all roses imported to the United States and Russia. We visited Olde Town Quito, several magnificent cathedrals, the botanical garden and an arts

clinic, digging yucca roots and sharing a mid-day meal with a multi-generational family who opened their home to us. Rubber boots were our mainstay in the rain forest, and because of the weather – damp with intermittent showers – we wore them anytime we were not in the lodge or our thatched-roof quadruplex cabins. Otherwise, we all walked around in socks or flip flops. This was not a trip for fashionistas; light-weight hiking pants
and quick-drying shirts, plus ample applications of sunscreen and bug spray helped protect us from the elements. Night hikes, several canoe rides into the rain forest, a widewater river trip to see parrots and parakeets feeding, an early-morning climb up a soaring observation tower to see toucans and other wildlife, excellent freshprepared meals in the lodge’s open-air dining room were just a few of the experiences during our See Amazon, page 60

school that teaches music and dance to people with disabilities. We shopped at the local markets, ate Italian food several times at a restaurant across from our hotel – it was really good! – and took a trip on our own to Ambato and Pillaro by public bus and later traveled with our group from Overseas Adventure Travel to Otovalo in our air-conditioned van. In Otovalo we visited a quinoa farm and even had the chance to hand-thrash our own from recently picked crops. The side trip also included a stop at a row of open-air flower shops where the country’s fresh-cut hybrid tea roses were sold in dozens for a just a few dollars. We were told that the best ones are shipped to Russia and the United States; the ones we saw were the rejects, but they were every bit as beautiful in a rainbow of colors and floral creations. Once again, we were guests in a private home for lunch, conversation and an insider’s look at the culture. The wife, Janice, took us on a tour of her compact garden that had more than 150 species of plants, fruits and vegetables. The side trip also included shopping for native crafts, including beautiful alpaca scarves and hand-made woven hammocks. Our trip to Otovalo gave us a chance to see a bit of the country away from the big city where the pace was slower. In all, we stayed in Quito three different times during our visit. It proved to be an excellent base for our travels on the mainland. The Trip to the Rain Forest You’ve heard the saying, “You can’t get there from here,” and it’s really true in Ecuador. We

flew by small commercial airline from Quito to Coca, then boarded 26-passenger motor-driven canoes for the two-hour journey on the Napo River in the Amazon Rain Forest. The Napo Ecological Lodge, nestled in a small village inside the Yasuni National Park, was our home for several days, where we spent our time visiting the local school and the medical

• Eagles
Continued from Page 30 eagles, an average of 1.5 per successful nest. Four nests appear to have fledged as many as three young. In 2016, 149 of the 201 occupied nesting territories were successful, fledging an estimated 240 eaglets. The dip in fledgling estimates this year compared to 2016 does not concern Sargent. He explained that adults were still incubating eggs in many southwest Georgia nests during the follow-up flight in March. Since fledging of nestlings from those eggs, although likely, could not be assumed, those numbers were not added to the total. The Nongame Conservation Section monitors eagle nesting through helicopter surveys in January and again in March and early April. The initial flights are focused on finding all active nests: those with eggs, eaglets, an adult in an incubating posture or evidence that eagles have been prepping the nest for use. The second round of surveys is aimed at determining the reproductive outcome of those nests and checking recently reported new nests. Factors feeding the national bird’s recovery include a U.S. ban on DDT use in 1972, habitat improvements after enactment of the federal Clean Water and Clean Air acts, protection through the Endangered Species Act, increased public awareness, restoration of local populations through release programs, and forest re-
growth. In 1989, the Southeastern recovery plan set 20 occupied nest territories in Georgia as a goal. “It was an especially low bar in terms of measuring success because the species was in such dire straits here,” Sargent said. Yet while the recovery of the bald eagle is encouraging, “there continue to be reasons for concern,” he added. Along Savannah River reservoirs, for example, nest numbers are lower than expected. One reason why is avian vacuolar myelinopathy, often referred to as AVM, a neurological disease deadly to coots and the bald eagles that prey on them. This winter, 10 eagle carcasses were found at Clarks Hill Lake (Strom Thurmond), an AVM hotspot. The cause of death for those eagles that could be necropsied was AVM, Sargent said. Sargent also reiterated the unexpected downside of an increased eagle population, including more birds being hit by cars as eagles, mostly sub-adults, eat roadkill; incidents of eagles being shot; and, birds suffering lead poisoning after ingesting fishing sinkers or scavenging animal carcasses containing lead shot, bullets or slugs. The public is encouraged to report eagle nests via www.georgiawildlife.com or call 478 994-1438.

• Amazon Continued from Page 55 time there. We learned about the delicate balance between the commercial oil business, another economic driver for the country, and the environment. We slept in thatchedroof cabins with private baths, our beds draped with mosquito netting and an overhead fan to keep us relatively cool at night. All meals were freshly prepared and introduced us to local cuisine of plantains (a variety of banana), potatoes, beans, rice, fish, pork, chicken and vegetables. We never had a chance to get too hungry. The days were filled with our own adventures, including several hours in open canoes going through a narrow river where we saw crocodiles, native birds and even a swimming panther crossing in front of our boat. We learned about harvesting and processing cocoa beans and even ground our own. Until then I didn’t know that chocolate is a major export from Ecuador and countrymen take great pride in its quality. One afternoon, the women of the village hosted us with ceremonial dancing. We were invited
to join in and then to hear about their business enterprise of making crafts and jewelry. In the matriarchal society of the Amazon, the culture is very supportive of women businesses. Our visit to the Amazon headwaters was short, but our guides Diego and Maria made certain that we had an immersive experience that gave us a glimpse into live along the river before we headed back to our motorized canoes to return to Coca and our flight back to Quito. Lumpkin County has a golden history and much more During the 1800s, gold was discovered in the hills and streams around the town of Dahlonega. In fact, the quest for that precious yellow metal was partly responsible for the Smith House, which today is one of Georgia’s most famous eateries. In 1884 Captain Frank Hall purchased an acre of land east of the town square and found a rich vein of gold ore. The city officials, however, wouldn’t allow a mine just one block from the public square. So the captain built his house right on top of the gold so the Smith House still stands on that vein of Dahlonega gold. The riches in Lumpkin County today consist of wine, food, art and scenic byways. Therefore, no trip to North Georgia would be complete without first visiting Dahlonega and spending a day on the courthouse square. It has the most wine tasting venues in Georgia, great art and plenty of history. My suggestion is to acquire an elegant room at the Hall House Hotel (www.hallhousehotel.com) overlooking the famous square and decorated with art by hotel owner Mike Miller. It’s the perfect place to stay in the center of the action. In just one day in downtown Dahlonega, one can breakfast at the Picnic Cafe, eat lunch at the famous Smith House (www.smithhouse.com), taste wine in all of the tasting rooms and see more quality art than you could imagine by just walking near the square. Top all that off with a fabulous halibut dinner and fine wine at the Back Porch Oyster Bar (www.backporchoysterbar.net), then proceed across the square for an evening of entertaining music at the Crimson Moon Cafe (www.thecrimsonmoon.com). Before going into the countryside to explore the wineries and gorgeous landscapes of the

Dahlonega Plateau, which is a narrow, northeast-southwest part of the northern foothills of the Georgia Piedmont, check out the beautiful Cane Creek Falls inside Camp Glisson near Dahlonega. Entering Montaluce Winery and Estates (www.montaluce. com) in Lumpkin County reminds one of the elegant beauty of Tuscany in Italy. The estate structures, winery and restaurant have that old world feel in a spectacular postcard setting, and thanks to a delightful Aussie winemaker named Tristen, the wines are excellent! From there, travel into the heart of the Dahlonega Plateau to another stately place with a more California style, operated by an elegant lady named Cydney. Her Frogtown Cellers and Vineyards (www.frogtown.us) feature estate grown wines that have achieved recognition and acclaim from national and international wine critics, writers and judges. Less than a quarter mile away at the famous Three Sisters Vineyards (www.threesistersvineyards.com), owner Sharon Paul will introduce you to some fabulous wines and allow you to photograph her beautiful barn. Though her Fat Boy wines are famous, her Chestatee White wine is one of the best in the state!
