By Pamela A. Keene Brian Whalen of Flowery Branch walked away from this year’s Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier Grand Prize of $10,000 last month. He was among the thousands of duck adopters for the annual event, which this year broke records. “This year’s event was the most successful ever,” said Brenda Bohn, development and communications director of the Northeast Georgia organization. “The weather was ideal and we had an excellent crowd.” Kids’ activities and an assortment of food and beverages kept attendees entertained at Lake
Lanier Olympic Park. Musician Jake Dupree performed. Houseboat sunset cruises raise funds for Annandale Village By Pamela A. Keene Three houseboat cruises this summer will raise funds for Annandale Village of Suwanee. Organized by Tom Stepnowski, owner of Lanier Boat Charter; and community volunteer Todd Sorenson, they will take place monthly – June 17, July 22 and August 19. The “Taste of Brew” cruises will feature 3-hour sunset cruises and tastings of beers created by Monkey Wrench Brewery in Suwanee. “We wanted to help out this worthy organization that serves adults with developmental challenges and traumatic brain injuries while providing a recreational event for people around the lake,” said Stepnowski. “Now that COVID-19 is getting under control, this seems like the per-
fect opportunity to bring people together for a good cause.” Stepnowski is providing a houseboat in his fleet, his 55-foot Song of the Chattachoochee, and the brewery will host tastings of select beers. “Munchies from Pig Tales is included in the $75 per person price,” said Sorenson, who is retired from a career in high tech sales and marketing. “And we’re limiting each cruise to 32 people to ensure social distancing.” The cruises will depart from Aqualand Safe Harbor Marina’s courtesy dock. Let your jig sink and give it time to get down to the fish and retrieve your jig slowly. The most productive jig colors are chartreuse and green (blue grass) and the White with chartreuse tail (monkey milk). Recently I was 50 percent minnows and 50 percent jigs. I’m using ATX lure company’s plastics that can be purchased locally at Sher-
ries Bait and BBQ or the Dam Store. I use the K9 5 pound test high visibility yellow braid for my line (unless I am using a bobber) and a Piscifun reel on an Acc crappie Stix. I use Garmin Live Scope and the Navionics Boating app. This crappie report was filed by Captain Josh Thornton, 770530-6493.

Lanier boater invents tool to help riders board boats, jet skis By Pamela A. Keene If you’ve ever been challenged to get back into a boat or reboard a jet ski, Bill Tannahill has invented a solution. His Nautical Boarding Strap, which comes in two sizes, can be attached to boats and jet skis and remain in place to assist with boarding. “Made of UV protected nylon, the strap won’t damage boats because there are no metal parts or snaps to scrap the sides,” Tannahill said. “It can attach to the ring on the back of a jet ski, the seat or handlebars, and on any of the connectors on a boat.” The straps come in 18- and 42inch lengths; the shorter one is designed for jet skis and the longer one can be used on boats. Custom sizes are available. “The boarding strap eliminates the need to lower a ladder or step into the water,” he said. “All you have to do is grab onto the strap to pull yourself up to board.” Tannahill first made prototypes and tested them in Lake Lanier. “Frankly, it’s easier to board using the strap than a ladder.” Bill and his wife Diane have lived in Cumming on Lake Lanier
since 2003. They often take their grandchildren and adult children boating on their pontoon boat or jet ski. They moved to Georgia from Los Angeles where Tannahill had served in the Los Angeles City

Recalling the story of a unique business model I grew up in a small New Jersey seacoast town. Due to its proximity to Manhattan, it had been a summer resort since the mid 1800s. The year-round population of about 2,500 swelled to over 8,000 in the summer months. A hotel was established right on the waterfront at the turn of the last century. It was in a great location with a large parking lot, and it had a liquor license. Then in the mid 1970s, after a slow summer season the old hotel burned to the ground. This freed up a much sought after and hard to get liquor license. Since the township would not issue any new licenses, the only way to get one was to buy one that already existed. Then an entrepreneur proposed to buy the property including the license. He had purchased a large barge at auction for next to nothing and wanted to moor it to the property’s waterfront. This barge had been converted into a floating restaurant with a nautical theme. I happened to be on the Township Variance Board at the time. What the new owner would need was a variance to transfer the hotel’s liquor license to the barge

He tried desperately to stop them but it seems none of them spoke English! Pretty soon he was overloaded. The boat began taking on water and was in danger of sinking! At this point the other vessel cast off their lines and took off for parts unknown at high speed. There was no alternative but to send out a “Mayday” call to the U.S. Coast Guard and wait for assistance. When they arrived, they found a half-sunk boat floating around amid a bunch of bales of marijuana and one very scared guy frantically bailing with a five-gallon bucket. I do not know
which would be worse: explaining what he was doing to the Coast Guard or explaining it to the drug dealers. When everything was finally sorted out, he wound up in the slammer and all his fancy toys were seized and sold at auction. The restaurant sat vacant for a few years until the barge finally sank and the township had to pay to have it floated and towed off to the scrap yard. By then I was no longer involved with town government, so I didn’t even get a chance to say, “I warned you!” Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

Fill ’er up: Rodney Hellemn lives life to the fullest Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene ver since he was a little boy, hanging around his father’s lawn-mower repair shop in Norcross, Rodney Hellemn loved to tinker. He also liked to collect things. Both of his childhood hobbies are still a huge part of his life. When he and his wife Gina built their home five years ago on Lake Lanier, he made sure he had plenty of room to showcase his collections and do restorations. The home includes a separate workshop, styled like a 1950s Sinclair Gas Station, complete with old pumps – and retro prices of .29 9/10 a gallon for Power-X and .25 9/10 per gallon for Dino – a service bay and an office with, of course, an old Coke machine. “I restored my first Coke machine when I was 12 years old,” Hellemn said. “I asked the salesman if he had an old drink machine and he just gave it to me. I still have that machine, plus several others from different decades, snack machines, juke boxes and pinball machines.” His shop/garage is laid out like an old gas station; you can walk into the office from under the gaspump awning, then turn right into a large workshop. There, he restores older jukeboxes, motorcycles and vending machines, some older than he is. Popcorn anyone? “Here’s my latest acquisition,” he said proudly as he pointed to a 1946 Manley Popcorn Machine, the kind those of us in our 60s remember from Saturday morning

trips to small-town movie theaters. He nodded and smiled when the reporter mentioned those matinees shown for the admission price of six RC Cola bottle caps. He and Gina frequently travel to coin-operated shows, swap meets and vintage events across the country. “We’re always looking for something special, something vintage to work on. And if you have something to sell, just give me a call at 770-945-9524.” Several display cases with horizontal revolving shelves showcase old movie and concert tickets, pen lights, novelty cigarette lighters, campaign buttons and even his commemorative ring recognizing him as a 50-year attendee/spectator of Gator National Racing in Florida. Walls are graced with posters, gas station signs, motor oil advertising; the room is filled with works in progress, including old pinball machines and a 1978 Honda Minitrail 70 with part of the original license tag on the back. “There’s just something about restoring these old machines, cars and other treasures,” Hellemn said. “I just love taking something with such a history and resurrecting it. Those were simpler times, when kids loved to drop a coin in dime-store boat machine for an imaginary adventure or when a Coke cost a nickel.” In a climate-controlled space, he walks past a pristine 1970 white Pontiac Trans Am Firebird with a blue stripe purchased new at Tabor Pontiac in Buckhead.

boat. “We used to go to Summerland Key in the summers and this bar is a recreation of my father’s boat.” Receipts to hotel keys The room is filled with Lake Lanier and family memorabilia. He picks up a high-school graduation program from Chamblee High School and points out his name. In the same case, he brings out a sale receipt from Bob’s Mower Center, which his father opened in 1967. “We did some work for (Atlanta radio personality) Neal Boortz and he paid us with a $500

credit for legal services,” he said. “It’s right here, and I guess he still owes us because we never had to cash it in.” There’s a key fob and key from Lakeside Campsites, formerly located outside Safe Harbor Aqualand Marina on Lights Ferry. “Yeah, we used to go there, too, and I have just always kept hotel keys. Even though the place is gone, I still have the key. And I’ve got a Trans Am keychain
from years ago from Bald Ridge Marina.” The basement includes a home theater decked out with movie posters, plus a recreation room with more games. Outside there’s a coin-operated boat on a stand. “That’s for the grandkids; I usually keep a roll of dimes so they can ride in it.” Staying busy When he’s not collecting, See Hellemn, page 51

Get ready for a hot summer in Georgia It was a long, cold, and ugly winter that lasted right through our spring. Summer is here and we are finally seeing some good old fashion Georgia heat. After experiencing such a cool spring season, I did not think we would see a warm-up like we did late last month with those record high temperatures. In looking ahead at the new Climate Prediction Center 90-Day Outlook, we can expect the temperatures to remain above average for the summer. There were a few meteorologists I know talking about a possible drought this summer, but the 90-day rainfall outlook is showing above average rainfall to continue. Our lake is at full summer pool and there it should stay for the summer. While we begin summer with warming temperatures, the outlook for summer storm frequency will be going up with the afternoon heating. I have seen a real increase in lightning over the past several years. I have tried to do some research to learn why but have not seen any plausible explanations. I have my own theory however. As I pointed out, temperatures will be warmer than normal this summer. I believe the increased heat is causing thunderstorm clouds to rise even higher than they normally would. I won’t go into all the meteorological processes, but there’s a lot of cold and ice up there, wreaking havoc on electri-
cal charges within the cloud. What concerns me the most, is the increased Glenn numbers of positive Burns lightning bolts in recent years. These are much more powerful than the Lanier typical negative lightning Outlook strike. A negative strike comes from the bottom of a thunderstorm and is about a million volts with 30,000 amps. A positive lightning bolt leaps out of the top of a thunderstorm cloud and is a billion volts with 300,000 amps! What makes them even more dangerous is they can travel 20-25 miles from the parent storm. Even though it may be sunny over the lake, it would be wise before you take the family out, to check the radar and see where the storms are and where they are moving. In addition to the summer storm season gearing up, hurricane season is also beginning. We expect an above average number of tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic. Here are the names for the 2021 season: Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Elsa, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Julian, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Victor, and Wanda. This month the area to monitor is the Gulf of Mexico for tropical storm formation. In July, that area shifts into the Caribbean, from the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, northward to off the coast of Florida and the Carolinas. Then in August and September, the region of formation is off the

Henry (Hank the Yank) Cowen made me a believer in the art of fly fishing Lakeside is pleased to announce that O’Neill Williams is bringing his column entitled “O’Neill Outside”’ to our newspaper and website. He has 40plus years of broadcasting his experiences fishing, hunting, and just plain living via TV, radio, and social media. We bounced around from cove to cove, peering as quietly as possible into the flat water where the little creeks fed the great lake. The shad were there all right, flashing first left then right, sometimes breaking the surface veil as predators loomed underneath. Just what was it that forced the activity, bass or stripers? We hoped it was stripers. On this day, Henry Cowan, a New York Yankee on our southern lakes, and I are searching the up-lake waters of Lake Lanier for striped bass. Interesting isn’t it that a striper is a true bass but a bass is a sunfish. Anyway, this flyfishing stuff is a bit new to me, however. This is my first attempt to catch one of these line-sided champions on a fly. I have often thought little of this fly-rod business; usually concluding that one could do better with conventional tackle and

Saying goodbye to a Lanier landmark - Browns Bridge’s green trusses By Pamela A. Keene By the middle of June, one of Lake Lanier’s most enduring landmarks will be no more. The familiar green trusses of Browns Bridge are being removed as the widening project nears completion. “The contractor, Scott Bridge Company, is currently working to remove the green trusses from the bridge,” said Natalie Dale,
spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Transportation.“This work is ongoing, and it is expected to take about three more weeks to remove the green steel truss portion of the bridge.” People driving across the new lanes will soon be doing doubletakes as they traverse the lake via Georgia 369. Boaters, many of whom rely on the green steel framework to guide them up or
down the lake’s channel, may also find themselves checking their GPSs to verify their location. The contractor is responsible for the removal and disposal of the former bridge structure. The project, with a contract completion date of June 29, 2021, is replacing the existing two-lane steel truss bridge over Lake Lanier. The original structure was built in 1955.

Learning about outdoors inspires new park naturalist By Jane Harrison A wonderment about the outdoors drew a home-bodied Vianca Milian to an early career in natural resources. The Iowa native recently moved to Gainesville where she started work in May as the park naturalist at Don Carter State Park. After two months exploring Georgia’s only state park on Lake Lanier, Milian still marveled at the lake’s vastness. “I haven’t worked at a park with a lake this size,” she said, pondering her past experience patrolling and maintaining two state parks in Iowa’s prairies. “There’s so much to learn.” Milian, 22, began interpretive programs for park visitors last month. “I love seeing people come out,” she said. Although the park filled with beachgoers, boaters and campers last summer, it offered no naturalist-led programs. Park Manager Steven Emery said the local respite, like many Georgia parks, did not hire a naturalist last year. He looks forward to seeing Milian bring back educational opportunities. “Hopefully (programming) will bring guests out who would not otherwise come,” he said.
For instance, one of the new naturalist’s first excursions appealed to history buffs. “The history hike seems very popular, with people interacting,” she said. In the short trek, Milian reveals the park’s transition from a Chattahoochee River outpost with at least three homesites to its development and opening as Georgia’s newest state park in summer 2013. She even hints about an old gravesite on park property. Other programs focus on wildlife, such as owls. Milian leads participants to dissect owl pellets to discover what the nocturnal raptors have been eating. The activity brings out numerous fun facts about the big-eyed park residents. Additionally, Milian enjoys hosting Nature Jeopardy, Scavenger Hunts, and Ecology Games, all aimed toward educating visitors about the park’s natural environment. Plus, she guides hikers on park trails, where she has helped install new markers identifying native plants and trees. “There seem to be a lot of opportunities to do a lot of different things,” she said. Milian said she likes meeting
people in her “Roving Ranger” excursions to the beach and campgrounds on Friday afternoons. She noted that although her former home in Iowa contrasts deeply with Georgia’s woodlands (“There are a lot more trees here!”), the community is similar. “People who come out to state parks are excited about being here,” she said. Milian indicated she is sad she will not be leading some of the park’s most popular outings: paddle trips. She said that unfortunately the training course for canoe/kayak guides is not offered this year. However, the park manager may continue the paddling tradition on Dog Creek and to a deserted island near the park. The naturalist admitted she has much to learn about her new digs, especially when it comes to fishing. “Typically that’s the first thing people bring up,” she said. She added that she welcomes the opportunity to learn about locating, baiting and catching fish on Lanier. “I like being outside all the time, learning about everything around,” she said. She’s game for any fishing tips guests might offer.

State park on Lanier a popular summer destination By Jane Harrison The surge of visitors longing for outdoor fun who discovered Georgia’s only state park on Lake Lanier is coming back this summer. As of mid-May, cottages and campsites at Don Carter State Park were fully booked every weekend through August. The sandy beach, fishing pier, hiking and equestrian trails and boat
ramp beckon metro Atlanta dwellers, locals, and out-ofstaters to the 1,316-acre park on the calm north end of the lake. “Last summer we were busier than probably we ever have been,” said Park Manager Steven Emery. When surrounding states shut down their parks during the coronavirus outbreak, people flocked to Georgia parks for out-
door outings and camping. As a result, many discovered the jewel on Lake Lanier. “I’m glad we remained open. People had an outlet for outdoor recreation,” Emery said. “People that never heard of us before had the opportunity to get to know this park.” This season the visitors center is open and the park has hired a
new naturalist for weekend programming. Last year, guests checked in for campsites and cottages on the park website. There were no interpretive programs. “So far, it’s busier this summer than last,” Emery said. He urged

State offers simple ways to be ‘bearwise’ to avoid problems A bear on the back porch, a bear in the trash, or a bear destroying a bird feeder are all relatively minor situations and almost all could be avoided by Becoming BearWise, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. “Avoiding problems with bears is usually simple, though it may not always be convenient,”
says Adam Hammond, WRD’s state bear biologist. “One of the six BearWise Basics is about securing food, garbage, and recycling. When bears have access to human-provided foods, regardless of the source or the intent, they will take advantage of them, and that often leads to further problems.” Why is it such a big deal? Rose Lane wins Residential Beautification award Rose Lane, the home of Rick Fulgham and Pam Keene in Flowery Branch, is this year’s recipient of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Residential Beautification Award. Named in memory of Pam’s mother, whose given name was Rosa and who grew roses, the 3-acre property features 60 hybrid tea longstemmed rose bushes, more than 100 native and standard azaleas, plus 50 camellias, five varieties of hydrangeas and many other blooming plants. The back yard is crossed by dry creek beds lined with river rocks. “Mom taught me about gardening from an early age, and even though gardening in Georgia is much different than in Northeast Florida, once you’ve gardened, it’s hard to give it up,” says Pam, who is a national gardening journalist and Hall County Master Gardener. “Our goal was to have interest 365 days a year, and we’ve accomplished that.” In addition to flowering shrubs, trees and plants, Rick and Pam have multiple raised gardens to grow tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables. Their blueberry orchard yielded more than 100 pounds of fruit last summer.
When Pam’s not writing for regional and national magazines, she spends time in Rose Cottage that Rick built for her. She says with a smile, “Just don’t call it a ‘she shed’.” And once you’ve seen it you’ll agree; it’s filled
with her mother’s wicker and provides a quiet place to relax with a cup of tea and a good book. Pam is senior reporter and the author of the monthly Curb Appeal gardening column in Lakeside on Lanier.
Pelican Pete’s gets new courtesy dock By Pamela A. Keene When customers come by boat to eat at Pelican Pete’s, they now have a dedicated courtesy dock for parking. Located closer to the restaurant, the lighted dock has a covered walkway and 21 double slips with side-ties to provide parking for about 50 boats. “This gives our Pelican Pete’s guests their own parking when they come by water,” said Brent Pearson, operations manager of Port Royale Marina off Browns Bridge Road. “By providing a dedicated courtesy dock, we’re also freeing up space for our dry-stack and gas
customers.” Pelican Pete’s has expanded its menu this season. Its raw bar features oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail and peel-and-eat shrimp in half-pound and one-pound options. Entrees include Georgia Peach BBQ Platter, Nana’s Jerk Chicken and PecanCrusted Salmon. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m. Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks. GHSA hosts first statewide sanctioned high school fishing championship

By Pamela A. Keene Sixty-six teams of high school anglers gathered at Laurel Park the second Saturday in May for the first-ever Statewide Georgia High School Association Bass Fishing Championship. Teams converged from across the state, bringing boats, coaches, parents and friends to watch the event. The winning team was Davis Madden, Fisher Faulkner. Their winning catch was five spotted bass totaling 20 pounds, 3 ounces. They represented Evans High School in Augusta.
Teams from across the US will converge on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, SC, for the 12th Annual High School Fishing World Finals and National Championship. It

National fishing and boating week begins June 5 You probably don’t need a reason to go fishing and boating … but just in case you need one how about this: National Fishing and Boating Week begins June 5. “Boating and fishing are great activities that you can enjoy with your family and friends and that provide many benefits,” said Scott Robinson, Chief of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division’s Fisheries Management Section. “Benefits include connecting with family members, providing an opportunity for stress relief, and actively supporting conservation efforts with the purchase of a fishing license, equipment and boating fuel.” National Fishing and Boating Week began in 1979 and was created to recognize the tradition of fishing, to broaden the spirit of togetherness and to
share the values and knowledge of today’s anglers with tomorrow’s anglers. Two free fishing days! In the spirit of introducing new family members or friends to the sport of angling, Georgia offers two fishing days, Saturday, June 5 and Saturday, June 12. On these days, Georgia residents do not need a fishing license, trout license or Lands Pass (WMAs/PFAs) to fish. Where to celebrate There are so many great places to fish in Georgia, from trout streams in North Georgia, to large
reservoirs, to lazy rivers in the south part of the state. You can always start at one of the 11 Public Fishing Areas (www.georgiawildlife.com) or at one of many Georgia State Parks (www.gastateparks.org/) that offer fishing opportunities for family and friends. According to the National Fishing and Boating Week website, one of the main reasons people don’t go fishing or boating is because no one has invited them. Summer fishing day camps offered at Go Fish Education Center The Go Fish Education Center is hosting four Fishing Day Camps this June and July. Limited space is available and preregistration is required. Camps are designed for youth, age 7-15, who would like to get outside and learn the basics of fishing. Participating kids will learn how to fish, receive safety tips, casting instructions and how to clean your catch. They will also learn about fish biology, habitats and conservation – all through guided instruction, tours and educational activities. • Session 1: June 15-17; 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily • Session 2: June 22-24; 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily • Session 3: July 6-8; 9:30

Kitchen cabinet trends for 2021 include several factors Kitchen trends tend to stick around a little longer than bathroom trends. But with that being said, microtrends are always changing as new products, colors, finishes and features enter the market. When it comes to kitchen cabinets, you can’t go wrong with a classic white look. Although door style trends have changed, white kitchens have been around for decades and tend to have a classic feel. Some of my favorite whites for kitchen cabinets are Pure White or Greek Villa by Sherwin Williams or Cloud Cover or White Dove by Benjamin Moore. These options are slightly offwhite but provide a timeless feel without going too stark or sterile. If you love white cabinets but want to make the space feel more your own, consider adding an accent color, either to a hood, some open shelving or an island. Grays have been around for a while now, but we’ve seen them working their way out in turn for warmer or more nature-inspired tones. Warm grays and browns, natural wood tones, greens, and earthy reds have been showing up in kitchens lately. Blues, of course, are still in the

nMORE INFO: tracytesmerremodeling.com mix, too. Mix and match is certainly an option when it comes to the kitchen but try not to over-do it. If your space is large, you might be able to go with up to three colors for your cabinets, but my rule of thumb is to stop with two. If you introduce too many colors or textures into the space, you could end up with sensory overload and the space will just look busy. Introducing too many finishes can also date the space. Remember, that in addition to the cabinets, you must consider all the other finishes going into the space: countertops, backsplash, flooring, etc., then decide what you want to be your main focal point. Along with cabinet color, it’s also important to consider the
door style and cabinet overlay. For a long time, raised panel doors were at the top. But for the last several years, shaker door styles have taken over. Shaker is still a very popular choice today, whether it be a pure, straightlined shaker or a beaded or beveled shaker; they all have a clean look that can go with almost any décor. Slab doors are getting to be popular as well, as they offer an even more straightlined and modern look. Plus, they allow for some more creativity when it comes to decorative hardware, i.e. pulls and knobs. Slab doors also look great in either a painted or stained finish, not just the high gloss contemporary finishes. Other flat panel (as opposed to raised panel) options are popular as well. As I mentioned earlier, these are slight variations of the common shaker door, but offer a little more individuality. Door overlay is also something to consider when it comes to the look of your cabinets. A traditional overlay was most common for many, many years. Traditional overlay basically means the cabinet doors were spaced apart such that you could see the face frames of the cabinet boxes. These also

Bad farming created magnificent beauty at Providence Canyon State Park Most human errors to the natural lands and environments produce irreparable scars on the land or waters forever, but in the case of Providence Canyon in southwest Georgia, it led to beauty! Poor farming practices during the 1800s caused erosion of the coastal plain leaving massive gullies as deep as 150 feet into the earth’s surface exhibiting clay and sands that explode in photographs with colors of pink, orange, red, white and numerous shades of purple. Though settlers started arriving in the area prior to 1825, the real beginning of Stewart County happened after the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1825 when the Creek Indians were forced to cede all their lands east of the Chattahoochee River. The farmers who toiled to survive during those hard times mainly grew cotton and were not educated about soil conservation practices such as contour plowing, crop rotation and cover crops. They would be astounded if they could see today what they created with their antiquated farming methods. Today, Providence Canyon State Outdoor Recreation Area is a 1,003-acre Georgia State Park. The park is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia and is often called “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon.” The park offers two picnic shelters, three pioneer campsites, six backcountry campsites, a museum and a visitor center with gift shop. Nearby attractions include Florence Marina State Park just nine miles away that has camping and cabins available, George T. Bagby State Park and Lodge with a golf course and Kolomoki Mounds State Park. The canyon has in total about 10 miles of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty that are no problem for experienced

hikers. The best way for most visitors to see the canyon is from the Rim Trail, but it is important to stay behind fences and off the fragile canyon edge. Hikers who explore the floor of the deepest canyons will usually find a thin layer of water along the trail, which is an indication of the water table below. Backpackers can stay overnight along the backcountry trail that winds through interesting tree formations. The rare Plumleaf Azalea that only grows in this region and blooms during July and August when most azaleas have lost their color makes the hottest part of the summer very unique and beautiful! Don’t attempt hiking in Providence Canyon State Park without proper footwear, plenty of bottled water, sunblock, a leash for your dog and some type of hiking stick for balance. Even hiking the more moderate trails can be very hot and tiring, and hiking to the canyon floor is a steep quartermile trek. The park is just south of Columbus, GA., not far from the border with Alabama and very close to beautiful Lake Eufaula. The canyon is an awesome destination for travelers looking for an unequaled experience with magnificent and colorful views. It is a

Hellemn is a home builder, currently building in Jefferson. His company is RWH Homes. He’s kept the same crew for decades. The couple has two adult daughters and two grandchildren, ages 8 and 3. BearWise is an education program developed by bear biologists from each of the 15 state wildlife agencies that make up the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA). The program, anchored by the website www.bearwise.org, offers citizen specific, detailed, and high-quality infor-
mation to help people live responsibly with bears and to keep bears wild. The black bear is a symbol of Georgia’s natural diversity, the only bear found in the state and a conservation success story. Though now considered the most common bear in North America, the species was nearly eradicated from Georgia in the 1930s due to unregulated hunting, illegal harvest - including the killing of bears as “vermin,” and large-scale habitat loss. Sound wildlife management practices have restored Georgia’s black bears to a thriving population estimated at 4,100
bears statewide. Black bears may legally be taken during the hunting season, which occurs each fall in Georgia (www.georgiawildlife.com/hunting/hunter-resources). However, the taking of bears during any other time of the year, or the taking of bears illegally during the hunting season is called poaching.
