No date yet for oral arguments in water lawsuit

By Jane Harrison As of late April, no date had been set for potential oral arguments in the Florida v. Georgia lawsuit over water in the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river basin. Supreme Court appointee Paul J. Kelly, Jr. had posted no response to Florida’s request in March for an evidentiary hearing. Kelly, the second Special Master assigned to settle the water war, already told the two states he had sufficient evidence, but opened the possibility of an additional non-evidentiary hearing. The lawsuit, ongoing since Oct. 2013, has cost each state more than $40 million, amassed millions of pages of documents and digital data, and consumed countless hours in and out of court. Supreme Court justices picked Kelly to bring the matter to a conclusion after remanding the first special master’s recommendations. Special Master Ralph Lancaster, now deceased, presided over two years of discovery and a month-long evidentiary hearing before recommending the court deny Florida’s claims. The Sunshine State accuses Georgia of hoarding water on the
river system that serves both states and causing economic and ecological harm in Apalachicola Bay, the heart of the state’s oyster fisheries. Lake Lanier is the largest of five U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs on the rivers that run from the Georgia mountains to the Florida Panhandle. Florida covets water stored in Lanier, the major water supplier for metro-Atlanta. Florida also wants more flow from the Flint River, tapped by farmers in central and south Georgia. Lancaster’s recommendations chided Georgia for unmetered water consumption on the Flint and slow enactment of conservation measures in metro-Atlanta during the 2012 drought. Nonetheless, he concluded that Florida could not prove that cutting Georgia’s water use would cure the ills downstream. He reasoned that since the Corps holds the spigot on the dams, there could be no guarantee on how much water would ultimately reach Florida. In what many perceive as a legal flaw, Florida did not include the Corps in its lawsuit. Supreme Court justices indicated some sympathy for Florida
and sent the matter back. Kelly got the nod as Special Master in August 2018 and immediately posed specific questions regarding Georgia’s agricultural water use on the Flint and Georgia’s conservation measures. He also asked Florida how much water it needs, how much it would cost Georgia to cut back and how much would Florida benefit from cutting Georgia’s consumption. The states’ responses and rebut-
tals, submitted in February, repeated the same accusations and defenses that have blocked settlement for six years. In its request for oral arguments, Florida attorneys stated they would be “amenable to any argument format that the Special Master believes would be most helpful in resolving the case, but, given the magnitude of the record and number of issues … proposes See Lawsuit, page 22

Registration open for 11th Annual Pirates of Lanier Poker Run
By Pamela A. Keene Registration is open for this year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run, taking place July 18-20. Events will take place at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, Lanier Islands and Harbor Landing. This year’s recipients of funds raised include Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the Edmondson-Telford Center. “As always, our event is all about the kids,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, the non-profit groups that organizes the event each year. “And we are grateful for all our loyal Poker Run participants year after year. It means so much to the children of Georgia to have this kind of support.” Registration is open, and once captains register, they may reserve a slip for the three days of the event. Registrants may check in on Thursday, July 18, at Lanier Islands’ Harbor Pavilion at Harbor Landing. The meet and greet party on Thursday takes place at the pavilion as well. Cheeseburger on Paradise Beach from noon to 3 p.m. with cheeseburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks are free to all registrants. The party includes the annual Pirate Stereo Competition, sponsored by AVC Marine.
The Captain’s Safety Meeting and Auction on Friday night includes dinner and music by Redneck Blonde. Saturday’s Poker Run features multiple card stops and participants can begin anywhere on the lake. Captains and crew are encouraged to decorate their boats and dress up like pirates to be judged for prizes. From 5 to 9 p.m., the Poker Run Casino will be open at Landshark Landing. The backs of the live creeks in the lower lake are still slightly stained. The lake above Brown’s Bridge is also slightly stained and progresses to heavier stain as you approach Gainesville Marina and above. We have entered “the fun zone” for fishing on Lake Lanier! Pretty much pick how and where you want to catch them and go after it. A jerk bait, spinnerbait, fluke, and even some top water have been productive, and of course a worm. Shallow is the word for the fish we have been focusing on – about 10 feet and less. Points, humps, rocks, docks all have fish on them. A Spro McStick is a good choice for the jerk bait. A fluke has been very productive around shallow rock and cover. Also, these baits will work back shallow in the creeks as well. Some days the wood in
these areas is holding fish also, so make sure to make some casts to the now many pieces of flooded cover. When the fish aren’t chasing, the worm on a shaky head is hard to beat. Consider downsizing your worm if the bite is tough or you are missing fish. A weightless Senkos is also a good option in the worm category. “Night fishing allows anglers to enjoy fishing while also escaping the hot days of summer, and is a great example of license dollars at work!” Georgia has 10 PFAs, nine of which will be open to night fishing, including Big Lazer, Dodge, Evans, Flat Creek, Hugh Gillis, Marben, McDuffie, Ocmulgee and Paradise. Anglers should be sure to check the visitor kiosk(s) of any location they visit to ensure which ponds might be open for night fishing. PFAs offer a wide variety of fishing opportunities, from lakes several hundred acres in size to ponds less than one acre. At most locations, anglers can fish from a boat, along the shoreline or from

Gainesville Garden concert tickets on sale
By Jane Harrison Country tunes and Bayou Soul will shake the blooms at the Gainesville Garden of the Atlanta Botanical Garden in two summer concerts set in the Ivester Amphitheatre. For country singer/songwriter Smith, the Gainesville concert hits close to home. The Jefferson native, hailed as a self-made music success, started out as a Social Studies education major at the University of Georgia while keeping a hand in the local music scene. After teaching geography, history and guitar at North Gwinnett High School, he left campus to pursue a music career at age 28. He self-produced nine albums with indie labels until he signed with Sugar Hill Records in 2015. His Sugar Hill recordings include

Lanier’s Olympic Park is the place to go this summer
By Jane Harrison The action’s heating up this summer at Lake Lanier Olympic Park where concerts will rock, bikes will roll, and boats will quake the waters at the once neglected lakeside venue. Add to that the aroma of food truck fare, a relaxing mid-week glass of wine, moonlit paddle tours, and an alladult field day challenge for a fun-packed season at one of Lanier’s community gems. The site of the 1996 Olympic rowing and canoe/kayak competitions is having its most activityfilled summer since its revival nearly six years ago. That’s when a re-energized Gainesville-Hall ’96, recently re-branded as the Lake Lanier Olympic Park Foundation, injected new community enthusiasm into the Olympic relic. LLOP Executive Director Robyn Lynch talked with Lakeside News last month about some upcoming events she’s most excited about and other new activities to keep the venue hopping. • Wine Down Wednesdays, Food Truck Fridays. The success of Food Truck Fridays, the last Friday each month springfall, led to a salute to making it through Hump Day. On the last Wednesday, wine drinkers can raise their glasses for a low key mid-week respite on the Olympic plaza overlooking the lake. Local restaurant, 2-Dog, will pour the wine and serve appetizers. Come back on the last Friday to chow down and toast the weekend with food truck dinners and live music.

Running into dragons on the lake while volunteering at the LLOP I love to volunteer. It makes me feel good, and it’s a lot of fun. You never know who you’ll meet or what you’ll encounter that wouldn’t ordinarily cross your path. One of my regular “gigs” is driving a referee boat or safety boat at the Olympic Rowing Venue in Gainesville. I arrive at 6 a.m. to be out on the water by 6:30, and usually work until after 6 at night. It’s really exciting to be “up close and personal” with all of these Olympic class athletes at their National Championship Qualifying Competition. The boats range from the one-person canoe, kayak or racing shell, to the 40-foot long eight-person shell, which can achieve speeds upward of 15 mph. The course runs for about three miles up a narrow part of the lake, with eight narrow lanes, sort of like a swim meet but much longer. The lanes are separated by small orange buoys every 20 yards or so. When viewed looking directly down the course as from Clarks Bridge, they look like airplane runway landing lights. It takes a

Survivors who compete regularly all around the world. Within the past year they have competed in places such as Florence, Italy. The local organization was started several years ago, modeled after other clubs around the country. Their goal is to help women move from merely surviving to thriving through support, friendship, laughter and exercise. They also increase community awareness of breast cancer issues and of the important role of exercise in maximizing quality of life after breast cancer. It seems the exercise you get while paddling is not only benefi-
cial all around, but extremely good for the muscles affected by breast cancer and members of the club have had much lower recurrence of the disease. Its encounters like these that make it so much fun volunteering. Sometimes it is hard work and time consuming, but you never know what interesting people and unexpected adventures you’ll run into. Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

Prediction for summer: Yep, more rainfall
As many of you know, I have been forecasting the weather here for a very long time. I have been the Chief Meteorologist for WSB since 1983. I have pretty much seen it all. Or so I thought. It began last summer. Enormous amounts of tropical air were billowing into north Georgia. The air was hot on the surface, as we were in the low 90s. The day before I had noticed a minor weather disturbance heading in our direction. A weather disturbance in the summer is basically a pocket of cold air aloft, which causes the air to become “unstable.” Warm air and muggy tropical air will rise quickly when surrounded by cold air. As it rises, it cools, condenses and forms into giant thunderstorm clouds. Our QPF model guidance (quantitative precipitation forecast) showed about an inch to two inches of rain was possible between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. The afternoon storms did blow up as expected. We were watching the estimated rainfall data coming in on our dual-pol Doppler radar. What we saw buy the end of that afternoon was astounding. Rainfall estimates, along with rain gauges, showed rainfall amounts of 4-7 inches! This has been ongoing since last summer. Astounding rain-
fall amounts and our climate is changing. I can tell you first hand it is Glenn happening. Burns Let’s take a look at last month. You remember that last tornado and Lanier severe storm threat we Outlook had right as we headed into Easter weekend. Again, QPF rainfall forecast showed 1 to 1.5 inches of rain for the entire event. When it was all said and done, 4-6 inches with isolated 10 inch totals were the rule. Flooding was catastrophic in many areas and flood warnings continue four to five days beyond the rainfall. Many areas saw an entire month’s worth of rain in two to three hours! Lake Lanier is up two feet above full pool as we head into summer. The Chattahoochee continues to flood. We have some serious issues. We may have to lower the lake levels much more than we are doing now to prevent more serious flooding. The outlook for May is calling for above average temperatures and more importantly, above average rainfall! I think we’re going to see these incredible tropical rains and continued flooding into the summer. Climate change is real and it’s happening.

Members brought rakes, chain saws, trucks and gators to clean up the shoreline from recent high lake levels. “The high water really seemed like the lake was purging itself of garbage and debris,” said Chris Ferris, club manager. “That means that we need to be diligent to keep the shoreline clean. We have about 11,000 feet of shoreline here at UYC, and we are dedicated to being good stewards of the lake.” He said they removed items that ranged from limbs and debris to Styrofoam and old tires. “We also gathered biodegradable items to use in our on-property compost pile that’s used on our landscape,” he said. Club members also worked on the organization’s 36 sailboats in the UYC Maritime Foundation’s junior program, boats either built by club members or purchased through donations. They rigged all the boats, inspected them for needed repairs and cleaned them for two weeks of coaching in June. This year’s UYC Maritime

While LandShark Bar & Grill has been open all year and the attraction had a very successful winter season with Magical Nights of Lights and Snow Island, behind the scenes additions have been percolating. Opening day is Saturday, May 4, but you can already experience LandShark Bar & Grill, which is open year-round, including the Wednesday night Low Country Boil starting May 1. “We’re kicking everything up another couple of notches,” said Bucky Perry, director of operations for Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. “From opening Phase I of our brand-new luxury RV resort, opening the first phase of our new docks at Port of Indecision Marina, enhancing our restaurants and adding more places to play, now there are even more reasons to come out and enjoy all there is to experience.” Safe Harbor Development, operating as Islands Entertainment LLC to manage Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, has continued its investments in making the destination a focal point of the Southeast. According to management, it’s just the beginning. “There are more than 12 million people within a three-hour drive and we want them to choose Margaritaville for their recreation and entertainment,” said John Lush, chief operations officer at the April meeting of the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority. “People will continue to see improvements and expansions. We’ve tried to touch every
phase we manage.” Lush said that Jimmy Buffett came to Margaritaville last fall. “He really likes this property and all that we’re doing,” Lush said. “He has even agreed to donate his Airstream trailer that will go on display at the new RV Resort so that people can have their picture taken with it.” Lush showed a slide of one of Buffett’s seaplanes and said that it may possibly be put on display here. Waterfront RV Resort opened in late April, as the first-ever RV park associated with Margaritaville in the country. “We want the resort to become the crown jewel of the company,” Lush said. It has more than 50 30- to 50foot concrete pads, each with 30and 50-amp hookups, plus water, sewer and free Wi-Fi. The sites, nestled beneath hardwoods and pines have firepits. “We’ve installed restrooms and showers; the laundry has televisions,” said

Bucky Perry, director of operations. “With community areas for people to gather and all the amenities of Margaritaville, staying here will be a fantastic experience.” Phase 2, planned for sometime this summer, will add approximately 70 RV sites. The Stables nearby are now managed by Margaritaville. It is being rebranded with the Margaritaville tropical theme. The facility is already offering camps for youngsters. Guests can also sign up for horseback rides on the trails along the lake’s shores. For the past couple of months, contractors have been building new concrete 60-slip covered docks that will become the Port of Indecision Marina. Located where the former beach courtesy docks stood, the marina will eventually include approximately 180 slips and 250 dry-storage spaces for year-round rental, probably by the end of 2019 or early 2020. “The first 60-slip dock was scheduled to open at the end of April or early in May,” Perry said. “Another 60-slip dock will be open by the end of May or early June. By late 2019 or early 2020, we will add 50 more slips.” The courtesy docks, now being called LandShark Landing daily docks, are being moved closer to LandShark Landing and expanded from 96 to 185 slips. They are available on a firstcome, first-served basis at a cost of $15 per slip. They can also be reserved online. “Raging River, clearly our
most popular ride in 2018, is being renovated and we’re enhancing the moving sidewalk that we used for Parrot Mountain snow hill for Raging River as well,” Perry said. “Paradise Beach additions include beefing up the floating aquatic adventure in the lagoon, adding an oversized swing and other components.”

Organization’s annual meeting details lake’s economic impact
By Pamela A. Keene More than 400 people gathered at Aqualand Marina for this year’s annual meeting of the Lake Lanier Association in mid-April. The event, which has grown in attendance over the past six years, showcases the work of the 2,500member group that has significantly raised its profile through public-facing initiatives. Following the afternoon’s vendor fair and “A Taste of Lake” restaurant samplings, Association President Wilton Rooks reported about the 53-year-old organization’s ongoing programs, including Abandoned Boats and Derelict Docks, Solar Lights, Shore Sweep and general advocacy for the lake. The groups’ current initiatives include awareness for the 100foot rule that requires boats slow to idle speed within 100 feet of other boats and stationary objects; ongoing maintenance of the nearly 300 solar lights installed by the association on the lake to help with night-time navigation; shoreline protection/rip-rap installation on five islands with permits for seven more; and Shore Sweep, set for September 14, 2019. “As our signature initiative, Shore Sweep continues to be very successful,” Rooks said. “In the past 30 years, our volunteers have easily pulled more than 1,000 tons of trash, debris and garbage from the lake.” Funding for the group comes from main sources: 54 percent from personal memberships, with an increase in 2018 of nearly 350 new memberships; 25 percent

serious bodily injury or death. In his role with the Georgia General Assembly and various committees, Morris is also the incoming chair of the Lake Lanier Legislative Caucus. Safe Boating Week is May 18-24
By Pamela A. Keene The start of the summer boating season is a good time to honor Safe Boating Week. From May 1824, various groups across the nation, including those on Lake Lanier and in Georgia, will recognize the national Safe Boating Campaign. Friday, May 17, is an event called “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work.” “It may sound strange, but if you’re committed to boating safety, it’s a great conversation starter with co-workers and friends,” said Chuck Kelemen, commander of Flotilla 29/USCGA on Lake Lanier. “And if you’re not comfortable
wearing your life jacket to work, just take it with you.” According to the USCGA, more than 70 million Americans are recreational boaters. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, machinery failure and alcohol use as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents. “The purpose of Safe Boating Week is to raise awareness of boating laws and safety,” said Barbara Tyson, commander of America’s Boating Club Atlanta. “Boating safety and education are two of our main missions and we encourage people to be mindful of how See Safe Boating, page 60

By Pamela A. Keene Any fan of Jimmy Buffett knows the term “Parrot Head.” Back in 1989, a group of Atlanta Jimmy Buffett fans formed the first official Parrot Head Club to honor the singer. Little did club founder Scott Nickerson know that he planted the seed of a movement that now includes more than 200 Parrot Head Clubs around the world. In addition to the bonds of Buffett’s story songs, many of the clubs focus on community service, raising money for causes including breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and other causes. Statistically, the organization’s charity work is impressive, having raised more than $53.5 million since the group started gathering statistics about its charitable causes in 2002. Among the 200 chapters, members have contributed more than 4.2 million volunteer hours as of 2018. Parrot Heads in Paradise Inc., www.phip.com, is the official umbrella website site of the clubs, sanctioned by Buffett himself. Its purpose is to bring Buffett fans together locally and at the annual Meeting of the Minds to be held in, of course, Key West, October
31 through November 2, 2019. The site also has individual club information and says that members will “engage in activities that are charitable, educational and that promote the general welfare of the community.” Parrot Heads in Paradise is a not-for-profit organization that works with community and environmental issues and provides social activities for Buffett fans and those interested in the tropical lifestyle. According to Billboard, Buffett has only logged one No. 1 solo hit on Billboard – “Margaritaville” in April 1977 on the Adult Chart, and two No. 1 duets on the Country Charts – “Knee Deep” with Zac Brown that reached No. 1 in May 2011 and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere”
with Alan Jackson in June 2003. Buffett doesn’t need charts and statistics. He’s known around the world, his popularity soaring by word of mouth and hundreds of millions of loyal fans who turn out for sold-out concerts, many dressed in tropical clothes and funny hats bedecked with parrots, lobsters and other exotic animals. His fans know all his songs by heart. In fact, Buffett even released an album, “Songs You Know By Heart,” released as vinyl on January 2, 1985, and as a CD on October 17, 1990. By Jane Harrison About this time of year, many folks drift into “lazy days of summer� mode, dreaming of sunning and cruising on Lake Lanier. But, for others, the warmer weather heats up the adrenalin. Lanier’s proximity to Atlanta and the mountains is drawing the latter in back-to-back athletic events the first two weekends of June. More than a thousand cyclists and hundreds of multisport athletes will stage their races and recoveries at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia and Tri the Parks multisport races. “When I think of Gainesville, I think of Lake Lanier, the crown jewel of the area,� said Franklin Johnson, BRAG Executive Director. When plotting routes for the event’s 40th anniversary ride, Johnson was lured by LLOP’s unique setting on a peninsula with an amphitheatre. Less traveled rural roads, ample space for camping, and a welcome from local tourism boosters put the venue on the BRAG map. Ann Carr, co-owner of Tri the Parks, said “name recognition� drew a sell out crowd of cyclists, runners and swimmers to the or-

ganization’s first races at LLOP last year. The vast majority of participants come in from metroAtlanta to hit the lakeside starting line. Spectators can view the entire swim portion from the grandstands, a perk rare to the sport. “The course is beautiful,� Carr said, and local support is ample to meet multisport athletes’ needs. She praised LLOP Executive Director Robyn Lynch. “She’s incredible. Whatever we needed, she was happy to help with.� She also commended local law enforcement and boat patrols for ensuring participants’ safety in sports set on open water and open roads. BRAG returns to Gainesville It’s been 13 years since the week-long bike tour has stopped in Gainesville, where in 2006 and 1998 cyclists set up camp on the grounds of Gainesville High School. On June 2, they’ll wheel to the lake for their first overnighter after a 70-mile hilly trek from Ellijay. Johnson expects between 1,200 and 1,300 bikes will roll in the anniversary ride that covers “the full breadth of Georgia, from the mountains to the coast.�
The route from Ellijay, where the tour kicks off, follows an indirect route on back roads and state routes, heading into Hall County on Ga. 136 (Price Road), crossing through Murrayville, and traversing North Hall’s foothills en route to the Clarks Bridge venue. The elevation profile spikes and dips all the way to LLOP. Every 12-18 miles cyclists can refuel at SAG (support and gear) stops and hop on a SAG wagon if their legs give out. “It’s not a race,� Johnson said. “We definitely want to stop and smell the roses.� When they roll into LLOP, cyclists can wash off the road dust and sweat in portable showers, take a splash in the lake, and mosey up to the BRAG Bar. Some will unpack carry-on tents; others will claim their gear from the baggage shuttle. A few, maybe 20 percent, will luxuriate in local hotels. Like many BRAG stops, LLOP will throw a celebration at day’s end. After an afternoon of BRAG-activities (bike trivia, one legged bike races, yoga and massage), cyclists can chow down on food truck fare and shake a leg to favorite local rockers, The Fly

The cycling brigade departs en masse the next morning with police escort into downtown Gainesville before heading toward Covington. They’ll travel to Milledgeville, Swainsboro, and Hinesville until the spokes stop near the sea at Darien June 8. BRAG’s a rite of summer for many of its participants, some of
whom have pedaled it 30 consecutive years, Johnson said. “It’s quite a tradition for a lot of folks and families. Engagements have been made‌and probably some divorces, too.â€? “Everyone meets a BRAG friend on the ride. My mom’s been riding it for 17 years and has her BRAG friends,â€? he added. Are you looking for a way to get advice and ideas about improving your gardens, yards and landscapes? Then plan to attend the Hall County Master Gardeners’ Biennial Garden Walk on Saturday, June 1. Four private gardens and two public gardens will be open for tours – three in Flowery Branch, two in Gainesville and one in Talmo. All are owned and/or maintained by Hall County Master Gardeners. Rick and I are honored to have our gardens at Rose Lane included again this year. It will be the third time that we have been on the Garden Walk, and it’s always a treat for us. It’s a chance to show off our yard, but it’s also a hard-stop deadline to get our spring gardening chores completed. When you have several hundred people coming to your house to see your gardens on a specific date, procrastination isn’t allowed. People who have come here the two previous times tell us that they enjoy seeing how our landscape has matured, what we have added and how we have incorporated combinations of native plants and trees, hybrid tea roses,

hydrangeas, azaleas and other landscape features. The first time we were on the walk, we had literally been living in our new home about eight months. The house took about 13 months to build, and almost as soon as we broke ground, I began moving mature azaleas, smaller flowering trees and other blooming shrubs from our former home a few miles away. We augmented these with foundation plants and flowering shrubs purchased from area nurseries. Over the years, our landscape journey yielded plenty of failed plantings, more than 1,000 of black plastic growers’ pots, ranging in size from 4-inch to 15 gal-
lon, many of which are still stored in our garage. Before that first walk, we built a raised-bed vegetable garden, planted about a dozen blueberry bushes and created two hybrid-tea rose gardens. Since then, we’ve removed about three dozen pines and invasive hardwood trees, planted pecans, pears and figs, and added more than 50 azaleas. Dedicated areas for camellias and native azaleas provide us with successive seasons of blossoms. Over the years, we’ve experimented with perennials, plus beautiful but hard-to-grow Native azaleas. moved to my subdivision home in Flowery Branch in 2001. In 2006, we pruned it back in the winter and moved it to Rose Lane. Even with intermittent shaping, it’s now well over nine feet tall and this year in April was covered with more than 150 blooms, each almost as big as a small football. We also have a bank of about a dozen varieties of native azaleas, in full bloom now. They’ll be gone by the garden walk on June 1, but we plan to include photos of them in our identification tags. Linwood Nature Preserve opens art gallery
By Pamela A. Keene To showcase the beauty of nature in Northeast Georgia, the Linwood Nature Preserve has opened an art gallery. It will make its debut on June 1, at the Hall County Master Gardeners Biennial Garden Walk. “Area artists have captured nature in paintings, photographs and other mediums and this is the perfect place to showcase their work,” said Margaret Rasmussen, founder of the nature preserve. The Bruce Alan Doll Nature Gallery is located in the Linwood Nature Preserve Ecology Center at 160 Springview Drive in Gainesville. The gallery has been named for the late Bruce Alan Doll, Hall County Master Gardener who was instrumental in working with the Linwood Nature Preserve. The past couple of months we’ve focused on cleaning and organizing. But now it’s time to talk about updating your home. When it comes to making updates, there are so many options out there, but which options will have the most impact? Let’s start on the interior of your home. One of the best updates you can make to the interior of your home is new paint. If your home’s walls are tired or dated, freshen them up with a new color. Color “trends” are typically shortlived, so make sure you pick out a color that is true to your style and personality. Whites and grays are not for everyone, and that’s OK! There are an infinite number of options out there. I recommend using a premium grade paint, such as Benjamin Moore, PPG, or Sherwin Williams to get the best results. Cost will vary depending on whether you’re willing to do the work yourself or if you prefer to hire a professional. When painting the walls, don’t forget about trim and doors; chipped, yellowed, or dingy trim needs an update too. This will help your home feeler fresher, brighter, and cleaner. the interior of your home are new window and floor coverings. Spring is a great time to switch out heavy curtains or blinds with something lighter and brighter. Cotton, linen, and silk are all great materials for curtains, and if you’re looking to block out light for sleeping, these can be found with blackout panels, as well. When it comes to floors, hardwoods or other wood-look materials continue to be the most popular. If you want to add some warmth to your wood floors, consider adding or changing out a rug. A rug, along with other accessories, is the best places to bring in “trendy” patterns or colors since they can be changed out easily. You can go with lots of
different materials for your rugs as well: wool, polyester, jute, or cotton, and don’t be afraid to mix up textures. Furniture is another item that can use a fresh update in the spring. If your pieces are looking worn or outdated, consider replacing them with new pieces. There are so many great furniture stores out there for all budgets, and many offer sales this time of year. If you love the style and “bones” of your furniture, such as couches and chairs, another option is to have them re-upholstered. Re-upholstering allows you to pick out a new pattern and/or color for your room, but you don’t have to break in anything new. In addition to the interior of your home, there are also many things you can do to update the exterior. Same as inside, painting can give your home a significant facelift. If it’s been 10 years or more since your home was painted last and you like the color, you may just consider a fresh coat. Otherwise, if it’s time to repaint and you’re tired of the color, now is the time to change it up. Just make sure you get the necessary approvals from your HOA, if applicable.
A rug offers an easy, quick change to switch to a “trendy” pattern.
And when you’re painting the exterior, don’t forget the trim, as well. If you have vinyl siding that cannot be painted, a good pressure-washing will help clean and brighten up your home. Changing up your front door can bring a new look to your home and add curb appeal. This could either mean replacing your door with a new one or painting your existing door a new, bold color. If you have trouble deciding what color to go with, talk with a local designer or visit Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams online and you can find recommendations as to what colors will coordinate with your existing color. Lastly, now is the time to clean up your yard before the summer heat hits. New landscaping can
help change the look of your home as well as give your home some major curb appeal. If you don’t have the budget for new plants, just weeding your yard, putting out new mulch or pine needles and pruning can have a big impact. You don’t want overgrown trees or bushes covering up your beautiful home. When it comes to updating your home, the sky is the limit. Updates can range from new accessories to new paint to a completely re-designed exterior. Just don’t forget, for more time-consuming work or work beyond your skill set, reach out to a local professional for help. It will save you both time and money in the long-run. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m. Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks. Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531. Friends of Lake Lanier seeking members to support Corps of Engineers By Pamela A. Keene For the past two years, a dedicated group of volunteers associated with the Corps of Engineers at Lake Lanier has been working behind the scenes to help ensure a positive recreational experience for the lake’s 11.8 million visitors. Now the group, Friends of Lake Lanier, is seeking to broaden its membership. At a
meeting in mid-April, the group and its Corps of Engineers Adviser Tim Campion reported on its work and successes. Nearly 20 people attended the meeting/open house. “This group has made significant contributions to the betterment of the recreational experience at Lake Lanier,” Campion said. ‘Not only have they been supportive, they’ve also as-

sisted with raising funds to help offset costs that we as the Corps simply do not have the funds to take care of efficiently.” The group assisted the Corps in repairing a lower housing on one of the ranger boats last year. “Because of our formalized relationship with Friends of Lake Lanier, we are able to work together to handle smaller issues such as this,” Campion said. “They were able to keep the work local, pay for it from funds they’ve raised and have the motor back in operation quickly.” The Corps has a formalized agreement with the Friends of Lake Lanier as a cooperating association, which means that the group is authorized to perform certain activities that may raise money for projects on the lake. “This partnership is beneficial to both entities,” Campion said. “It’s a way for people to assist the Corps in our mission while having a chance to volunteer at the lake and improve the recreational experience for visitors. “ Over the past two years, the group has provided services to visitors that the Corps cannot provide. Additionally, the group maintains the laundry equipment in the campgrounds and is able to collect those funds to use to the benefit of the Corps. “Without our work with the Friends of Lanier, the funds collected from services, such as the laundry facilities, would be returned to the Federal General Funding Washington,” Campion said. “This is a way to keep some of these funds local, to be used directly for the benefit of Lake Lanier.” The group operates with a
board of directors that meets regularly with the Corps. Chief Ranger Chris Arthur will become the adviser of Friends of Lake Lanier in May. USCGA national officer and Lanier boater Mary Larsen passes away
By Pamela A. Keene Mary Larsen, long-time leader of two Lake Lanier boating organizations, passed away on March 12, in Atlanta. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary hosted a celebration of life for Larsen Larsen in late March to commemorate her achievements and honor her passing. “Every once in a while we get

to witness outstanding people in our lives here on Lake Lanier,” said Flotilla Commander Chuck Kelemen, who has known Larsen for many years. “She performed many jobs with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and on the active side of the US Coast Guard for 38 years, representing not only Lake Lanier but the entire Seventh District of the Coast Guard. She held numerous positions on the national board of the USCGA. She made us proud and we certainly feel her absence.”
Among her service to the national USCGA, she was National Vice Commodore of Atlantic East and District 7 Commodore Commander. Additionally, she was as commander of Atlanta’s Boating Club and also served on two national committees with America’s Boating Club. “Mary’s dedication to Atlanta’s Boating Club and her sunny disposition and sense of humor will be sorely missed,” said Barbara Tyson, commander of Atlanta’s Boating Club. “We

Parks multisport event at LLOP was the first sell-out in years for the organization that puts on competitions at parks all over Georgia. “Lanier was an incredible event,” said Tri co-owner, Carr. About 400 athletes competed in the triathlon, duathlon or aquabike that started and ended on the Olympic plaza. Carr expects the June 8 races to fill up again this year, possibly by mid-May. Registration deadline is June 1. As of late April, already about 100 participants had signed up, mainly for the triathlon. On race morning triathletes will wade in near the grandstand award circle and stroke toward the first of two buoys on a 600 meter course to the Clarks Bridge boat ramp. After a quick jaunt from the water to the transition area in the parking lot, they’ll strap on their cycling shoes, hop on their bikes and set off on a challenging North Hall 14.7 miler. They’ll spin back into transition and switch into their running shoes for a 3.1 mile trek through a neighborhood off
Clarks Bridge Road. The finish line awaits – the light at the end of the LLOP pedestrian tunnel – near the channel where Olympian rowers and paddlers won gold. Other racing options include a 3.1 mile run/14.7 mile bike/3.1 mile run duathlon and 600 meter swim/14.7 mile aquabike. Relay teams are welcome. Relay athletes can race their specialty and rely on team members to complete the course. Many of those registering early represent teams from metro-Atlanta and Forsyth County. Tri the Parks management chose LLOP by chance a couple of years ago when a partner was driving on Clarks Bridge. “Anytime we go by a body of water on a road trip, we check it out” for tri suitability, Carr said. LLOP has it all: a lake for swimming, at least 400 parking places, a staging ground for transition, plus good roads for biking and running. LLOP Executive Director Lynch described last year’s multisport races as “a really neat event to watch.” The transition area offers a glimpse at the athleticism,

Elachee – A natural for studying nature in our backyard

The language of my ancestors, the Cherokee Indians, had a word “Elachee” which translated to “New Green Earth.” The use of this ancient word is so appropriate for today’s mission of the Elachee Nature Science Center in the Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve. According to archaeological findings, Archaic Indians were the earliest human inhabitants in this area, Woodland and Mississippian tribes took their place and by the 16th and 17th centuries the area became home to the Creek and Cherokee nations. Because the Walnut Creek watershed’s geography was not ideal for farming, the area escaped the 1800s cotton cultivation phenomenon. Nevertheless in 1927, Johnson and Johnson Company purchased most of the Walnut Creek watershed to construct the Chicopee Mill and Village, which indirectly protected the natural forest and its important water source. Chicopee Mill drastically reduced production during the 1970s and donated almost 3,000 acres of the pristine watershed to the Gainesville Area Park Commission. Because of the vision of five local ladies (Becky Geiger, Rosemary Johnson (Dodd), Sissy Lawson, Ellen Odegaard and Julia Cromartie, the birth of Elachee Nature Science and Creative Museum, Inc. was nurtured. During these early days, Elachee had day camps for children on a small patch of woods on Lake Lanier near Woodland Circle. By the early 1980s, Elachee also offered hiking, camping and nature study activities for families. As part of its evolution, its board of trustees more clearly defined Elachee’s mission as a nature ed-

ucation provider, but made finding a more permanent home a priority. Finally in 1984, The Chicopee Woods Area Park Commission gave Elachee permission to build a nature center in Chicopee Woods. Blending the concepts of taking the classroom experience outdoors, Elachee launched its innovative school programs in 1986, serving over 16,000 students from the City of Gainesville and Hall County schools. A 1989 Hall County one-cent local option sales tax raised funds to build phase one of the Elachee Nature Science Center that included the Visitor Center and classroom complex. Elachee Nature Science Center in the Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve opened to the public in 1990. Today, Elachee has become a destination for kids from 9 to 90 to explore and become educated on so much of the outdoor and natural world. Visitors can enjoy the hiking trails, view the natural history and live animal exhibits or learn at the Chicopee Lake Aquatic Studies Center. Longtime Lakeside columnist passes away By Alan Hope Mike Rudderham, who wrote a boating column for Lakeside News for nearly 20 years, passed away on April 18 at Moosehaven in Orange Park, Fla. He was 81. Mike was a marine surveyor for more than 40 years and was a boating enthusiast. He served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Mike entertained readers with his memories of growing up in WisconRudderham sin around boats. His exploits on the water included boat sales, fishing and waterskiing. Mike bought his first boat at 12 years old – a 14’ Carter-Craft plywood runabout. His father allowed him to put his 5 H.P. Johnson motor on it so Mike named it
“Half Mine.” That purchase “led to my water-skiing, which eventually led to tournaments, shows and Cypress Gardens,” Mike wrote back in 2011. Through his voracious reading of magazines and other materials he kept readers abreast of boating trends and most importantly for him, boating safety. And Mike always signed off his columns with “Practice safe boating.” Mike became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose on October 1, 1982 when he joined Griffin, Georgia Lodge #1503. He received his Fellowship Degree on September 26, 1998, and was a member of the 25 Club. Mike sponsored 49 members in his lifetime. Mike was preceded in death by his wife Frances, on April 11, 2005.
