INSIDE THIS ISSUE Could ACFS group be answer to water wars? The week that Florida Gov. Rick Scott filed suit in U.S. Supreme Court over Georgia’s use of water in the Chattahoochee and Flint system, 56 members of the ACFS governing body, including 14 from Florida, unanimously approved a resolution asking the governor to delay the lawsuit and further legal action. Fall boating brings fun, cautionary advice while out on the water November can be a great time to take the family and friends out for a day of recreational boating, picnicking, leaf viewing and generally having a great time. Air temperatures are just right to brisk and water temps are still in the moderate range. At the time of the writing of this article, Lake Lanier is slightly above normal pool, a rare occurrence this time of year. While recreational boating slows down during November and December, fishermen and some boaters with heated cabins will still find their way out on the water for a day of relaxation and fun. Boating accident statistics give us a warning, however, about boating during October, November and December. I have access to U.S. Coast Guard boating accident statistics for 2012, and they give us reason to be concerned. Trauma, drowning and hypothermia continue to rank 1, 2 and 3 as causes of death. The highest percentage of accidents resulting in death occurred in October (25 percent), November (22 percent) and December (26 percent). The other nine months ranged from 11 percent to 27 percent (February). Hypothermia is not “freezing

To learn more about cold weather boating and other important facets of recreational boating, consider taking our one-day “About Boating Safety” course being offered at Lake Lanier from February through October each year. booth at the Atlanta Boat Show January 12-15, 2012. We hope to again be located in the lobby area of the Georgia World Congress Center next to the Coast Guard traveling exhibit, and will have ample free safe boating brochures available. You will also be able to speak with our knowledgeable Auxiliarists on duty should you have questions. Roy Crittenden is the Public Affairs Officer for Flotilla 29.

Shore Sweep 2013 a sweeping success

Youngsters at Clark's Bridge Park wrestle with a chunk of Styrofoam during Lake Lanier Association's annual Shoresweep last month. Executive director Joanna Cloud said the event was "one of our best yet!" She said volunteers brought 58 large pieces of Styrofoam to Port Royale Marina alone. "We also saw lots of tires, a large tree, a paddle boat, and a porta-potty among the items hauled in," she said. Cloud estimated the effort collected 30 tons of trash by about 1,000 volunteers.

November 2013

November means it’s time to change strategies By now the torrid and dry days we experienced from August to middle September are a fading memory. Late fall is in full effect. One good thing about our part of the world is that it’s almost never too cold to fish. While things are shutting down up north (until the ice sets up solid, mind you), November can be a great month to enjoy some serious action with bass in this area. Mornings are fine and crisp and air temperatures are often Indian summer perfect from mid-morning through late day. If the weather is overcast and stable, there’s often a huge bonus of stripers schooling on the surface sure to interrupt even die hard bass anglers. In a nutshell, November is a great time to be out on the lake. The colorful fall foliage, even past peak, makes for a fine backdrop no matter how the day goes. While bass are moving progressively deeper with cooling water temperatures, the first half of November can offer some very good fishing opportunities in the shallows as well. This action is all about covering water. Both primary and secondary points in creeks are the most productive targets. Boat docks, blow downs,

bluegill. An added bonus is that they are very snag free thanks to standard weed guards. When you’re casting to the shallows and up to 10 feet deep, tie on a Bitsy Bug in a 1/8th ounce size. This is a very effective diminutive finesse style jig produced by Strike King. It goes without much debate that nearly all jigs are much more effective when paired with trailers. Several brands of mini plastic crayfish trailers work very well with the Bitsy Bug. Remember that a trailer should complement the jig and not overpower it. In our area, the top Bug colors are green pumpkin and watermelon. Lighter jig and trailer combos are best fished on medium action spinning tackle with eight pound test line. This choice facilitates side arm casts that can skip the lure far back under boat docks. While most jigs are crawled slowly along the bottom, there is a different approach. Some are designed to swim along with a slow retrieve. The swimming jigs typically have heads that are much less rounded that conventional types and offer more colors that represent baitfish. They can be presented shallow or deep. Few anglers take advantage of

this specialty lure. That’s something to keep in mind. Later in the month, go with heavier jigs designed for deep water presentations. One staple variety for our area is the soft plastic skirted twin tail grub. These are also known as spider jigs and some still refer to them as Creepy Crawlers (a long since discontinued lure by Zoom Bait Company). These migrated to our area slowly across the country from the western United States some time back. They are highly effective and really shine when rigged on football style lead heads. When picking a lead head, the 3/8th ounce weight is a good rule of thumb unless you’re fishing pretty shallow or over 30 feet deep on a consistent basis. Hot brands include Yamamoto and Chompers. By the way, the action producing tails on these plastics eliminate the need for trailers. Split rings add action No mention of bass fishing in late autumn would be complete without a reference to jigging spoons. Anglers typically love or hate this technique. It involves confidence in your electronics and the discipline to stick with a plan. When you hit it right, the See Fishing, page 11

Lanier Fishing Report

Continued from Page 10 results can be just about overwhelming. After that, you love it. Some practice and time devoted to spoon jigging will help you shave a lot of time between those seemingly magic spots. When the fish are really stacked in an area, and bass are predominant, it’s not unusual to catch stripers, crappie, or even the odd walleye or carp. Jigging spoons are ridiculously simple in design. Typically they’re oblong shaped slugs of lead or steel with a treble hook at one end. Normal weights are one half to one ounce. White and silver or all chrome are the only colors you will need. The Flex-It Spoon by Barry’s Bait Company has been immensely popular in our area for the last 18 years or so with good reason. They are compact and a slight bend (keep it very slight) to the body imparts greater action on the fall. Spoons by Hopkins, especially the Shorty 45, are bass catchers of lore. These are expensive to lose however and Strata Spoons seem to fool the fish just as well at a fraction of the price. A couple of modifications will make your spoon fishing more effective. If your lure choice does not come equipped with a split ring at the line tie, add one. You’ll get more action. It’s also worth the time and small expense to replace the typical forged treble hooks with premium wire models. They will turn more strikes into solid hook

ups. Also, when you get snagged, they are much more forgiving and will often bend before the line breaks. Jigging is actually a pretty easy technique. While you can sometimes catch fish as shallow as 25 feet, deep water presentations of 30 to 45 feet are much more typical. Free fallin’ Several situations come to bear for lure presentation. Use your electronics to find the tail end of submerged timber in creeks and coves. These are always worth checking out. If concentrations of baitfish are present, you may have found a hot spot. Points, especially those with sharp drops on the sides are good bets as well. Once again, baitfish will always give any piece of structure a huge edge. I’ve even caught lots of fish in areas that were far from great in terms of structure or cover. Lots of baitfish proved to be the key. Often it pays to slowly idle around and scout with your electronics. If you don’t have the latest high dollar unit, don’t fret. Knowing how to read the unit you own is more important. Good anglers have been using basic depth finders to identify spoon jigging hot spots for decades. I highly recommend using marker buoys to mark high potential targets. Toss these a few yards off to one side for a visual reference. See Fishing, page 12

Lake level: 1071.26 or barely over full pool. Surface Temp: About 70 degrees and dropping with the onset of cold nights and cooler days. Clarity: It’s the same old song. Clear in main lake areas with light color in upper tributaries. Bass fishing has been good. As with last month, a variety of patterns have been producing so it will pay to experiment on any given day. Cranking points with both shallow and deep running plugs has been working. The shallow crankbaits have been producing best very early in the day. Jerkbaits retrieved over points and humps with submerged brush are also accounting for a good bit of action. Don’t worry about the shoreline and concentrate on the cover that you find with electronics. Spider jigs a.k.a. skirted twin tail grubs have also been consistent. Rig these on 3/8th ounce football style heads and cast to the points and underwater humps. Fifteen to 25 foot depths are productive. The drop shot rig is also putting fish in the boat. Smaller finesse style plastics are attracting strikes when used with this presentation. You can also score some strikes by slow rolling the Bite Size Herring or the Snack Size over the same areas. As if this is not enough to make you wonder what to tie on, some topwater activity is occurring as well. Keep an eye out for the surface schoolers through mid-month. Medium size topwaters such as Chug Bugs are excellent picks. Keep one ready at all times. A shakey head rig would probably work too. No wonder we have so many rods and reels! Striper fishing has been fair. The guys who have been catching them have been hitting the creek mouths. Best action is early and late in the day or just about anytime of day during overcast conditions. Some schooling activity has been taking place and these fish will bite a Zara Spook in your favorite baitfish color. If you’re on target quickly with your casts and the Spook fails to get a response switch to a 3/8th ounce bucktail jig in some white variation paired with a fluke style trailer. The Original Fluke and Super Fluke Juniors work well for this application. White Pearl and Albino colors are the standard. Smart anglers are picking up extra linesides by trailing live baits on flat lines trailed about 100 feet behind the boat. When fishing this plug casting/live bait pattern, resist the temptation to put out extra live baits using planer boards. Retrieving two baits is time consuming enough if you’re in a hurry to crank the big engine for a school that’s busting several hundred yards away. If you have another person or two in the boat, everyone should have a pit crew “job” in getting ready for a fast move. The first job for everyone should be donning life vests.

Youth charities net big returns from Pirates of Lanier Poker Run By Pamela A. Keene Three children’s charities are starting the holiday season with more jingle in their pockets, thanks to the generosity of Lanier Partners of North Georgia and the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run this past summer. Members of the group’s board of directors recently presented checks to the event’s designated charities for a grand total of $140,000. Camp Sunshine received $70,000; Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County was awarded $40,000; and Naval Special Warfare Kids was given $30,000 at the recent check presentation held at Lake Lanier Islands Resort. The event’s major sponsor, Dan Jape of Reliable Heating and Air, made the presentations. “We’re speechless. No words can express our gratitude,” said Chief Volunteer Officer/Board President Greg Katulka with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County. “We’re ecstatic to be a benefactor of the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run. This donation will go a long way to helping the young people in our community and the kids we serve.” In return, representatives of the Boys & Girls Clubs presented

Lanier Partners and representatives or organizations receiving funds pose for a group photo at Lake Lanier Islands. The group donated a total of $140,000 to the three groups.

Lanier Partners board members with copies of actor Denzel Washington’s book, “A Hand to Guide Me,” about his experiences as a youngster in Boys & Girls Clubs. “You know, we’re just a bunch of guys who feel good about what we’ve been able to do for children’s charities,” said Rea Williams, outgoing president of Lanier Partners. The 2013 event raised a total of $230,000. Lanier Partners is already knee-deep in plans for the 2014 Pirates of Lanier Poker Run, scheduled for July 17-20. Reli-

able Heating and Air will again be the presenting sponsor. “Our goal next year is $400,000,” said John Woodruff, incoming president of Lanier Partners. “We’re already accepting reservations and encourage people to register early before we reach our boat limit.” The organization is offering 2013 promotional gear, including T-shirts, for sale on its website. Additionally, it has produced a DVD of the 2013 event.

fine choice for invisibility (if it’s even a factor at those depths) and abrasion resistance. If you’re using spinning tackle, lighten the line to 12 pound test monofilament and use a fluorocarbon leader. You will snag spoons on a regular basis while practicing this technique. Good news is that just about all snags can be freed with several very sharp vertical snaps with slack in the line. A vertical posture to the lure is critical to success in this attempt. Remember this and you’ll save money.

In closing, the days are getting shorter and cooler. Don’t let this changes of seasons keep you off the lake. Late fall is an awesome time to have lots of water to yourself and put a lot of bass in the boat. Until next month, take care and be safe on the lake!

• Fishing Continued from Page 11 When you’re a little ways off the shore in the chop, it’s easy to lose your target by a few yards. This can make a huge difference in the result. If you’re paranoid about other anglers spotting your blaze orange marker, paint them green. Just remember that they will be easier to forget as you leave an area. In case you have not figured it out by now, jigging a spoon is about as easy as falling off a log. Bottom presentations are the norm. Simply allow your lure to drop to the bottom and give the rod tip a crisp snap of six inches to one foot. Resist the temptation to over work the lure. Allow the spoon to free fall back to the bottom. The really important piece is that the free fall is controlled with no slack in the line. If the line goes unexpectedly slack during this process, set the hook. In some instances, fish hit mostly on the fall, while at other times you may experience more strikes on the lift. Medium heavy tackle is best for spoon fishing. Fourteen pound test fluorocarbon line is a

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE GH ’96 taking applications for venue manager By Jane Harrison Gainesville Hall ’96 will be taking applications for a venue manager for the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue through the end of November. The position created by the organization to take charge of a multitude of tasks from day-to-day operations to coordinating events is expected to pay an annual salary between $50,000 and $60,000, based on experience. GH ’96 Chair Mimi Collins distributed a three and a half page job description and minimum qualification list to board members at the organization’s Oct. 18 meeting. Hiring of a venue manager was one of the first goals set by the new GH ’96 board, which seeks to develop the Olympic Venue to its full potential. City and county governments pledged a total of $300,000 in Fiscal Year 2014 budgets to help finance improvements and hire a manager at the venue that hosted flatwater canoe/kayak and rowing events in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. According to the job description, the manager would be in charge of or assist with facility upkeep, event scheduling, marketing, financial oversight, public relations, and proposals for events. In addition, the manager would act as a liaison between the canoe/kayak and rowing clubs, governmental agencies, and community groups. Candidates should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or related field and at least four years of facility management experience. Leadership experience at the senior management level is also sought. The board’s recruitment selection committee designed the job description and candidate requirements after reviewing similar positions at other waterfront venues. Collins said the committee is designing a benefit package. She added the manager’s duty description “may change as time goes on.” The position will be posted in local publications and on the GH ’96 website: www.lakelanierolympicvenue.org. Board member Melvin

Cooper suggested it also be advertised in official publications of the Georgia Municipal Association, Association County Commissioners, and state and national recreation organizations. Stacey Dickson suggested postings on Craig’s List and the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Business Link. Candidates would be interviewed by Collins and board members Dickson, Phil Sutton, Kevin Seitz, and Ruth Bruner. Although budgeted, the funds that would help pay the manager have not yet been disbursed to GH ’96 by Gainesville and Hall County governments. Both governments are awaiting completion of a service contract outlining the organization’s goals and business plan. Collins reported “a lot of progress” with the document, which she said would be a single agreement with all three entities. John Ferriss, representing Lake Lanier Rowing Club, spoke about upcoming rowing activities, including a throng of collegiate crews planning to head to Lake Lanier for winter and spring break training. Three northern teams plan to head south in January and February; 20 to 25 crews plan practices on Lanier in March. He expects other coaches will be trying to schedule trips as they get crews organized. “We usually try to limit it to 300 to 350 participants on site per week” said Ferriss, of the popular destination for collegiate training. Thousands of high school and college rowers will launch at the John Hunter Regatta in March. The American Collegiate Rowing Association will host its national championship at LLOV in May. Seitz, representing the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, reported the Canadian National Team has contacted the club about holding its team trials at LLOV. The Gainesville site seems to be a favored destination for the Canadian team, which has chosen Lanier for about half a dozen team trials. US Canoe/Kayak plans its 2014 national championship at LLOV July 31-Aug. 2.

Motors stolen from LCKC coaching boats Originally published online 10/16/2013

By Jane Harrison The Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club had to adjust its finances a bit to replace motors stolen from three of its coaching boats Oct. 13 or 14. The club purchased new motors a day after Morgan House, Youth Special Development Squad coach, discovered the motors were missing. The stolen motors, purchased six months to a year ago, were valued at slightly more than $2,000 each. They were taken some time between 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, and 6 a.m. Monday, said LCKC President David Haack. The coaches’ jon boats were moored at LCKC docks at the Lanier Olympic Venue on Clarks Bridge Road. House contacted the Hall County Sheriff’s Department after he found the motors were gone prior to morning practice. The coaches use the boats to escort young team members in their training sessions and regattas. “They are important for the safety of the kids. They are essential ingredients” when kids are out

on the water, Haack said. He added the unexpected expense of buying replacement motors created some degree of financial hardship as the club shuffled the balance sheet to buy them. The club got the replacement motors in time to resume regular practice sessions and use in the Oct. 28 Halloween Howl Regatta, a small holiday themed LCKC event the kids enjoy each year. Haack said this is the first time thieves have targeted the boats. Hall County Deputy Chad Mann said boat motor thefts are rare in Hall County. “This is the first I’ve heard of it,” he said. It was not known if the thieves accessed the docks by water or land, Mann said. LCKC provided investigators with vehicle identification numbers which can be used to trace the motors if they are resold. Mann speculated the motors could be pawned, sold for scrap or reused. No arrests had been made as of Oct. 16. Haack said the club is “going to have to be a little more cautious” with equipment kept at the venue.

Endurance athletes swim 6.4 miles Bridge 2 Bridge By Jane Harrison Eight endurance athletes have a new perspective on Lake Lanier after swimming 6.4 miles from the Dawsonville Highway bridge to Brown’s Bridge last month. “The entire event gave new meaning to a lake I have spent my entire life in, on and living around. It was a thrill to think, after completion, about the sheer distance,” said Jefferson native Eric Taylor. He experienced the journey between the bridges as few do, stroke by stroke. The 34-year-old triathlete and distance running coach organized the Bridge 2 Bridge swim along with Blaire Bachman, head swim coach at Brenau University, as part of a long range plan to swim the 21-mile English Channel. After finding few open water swim events in the area, they devised their own. “This was the first of many cold water distance swims that will be necessary to attain that goal,” Taylor said. Six other athletes, endurance swimmers and Ironman triathletes ranging in age from their mid-20s to early 60s, waded in with them the morning of Oct. 13 near the big green bridge on Ga. 53 over the Chestatee River. Ginny Crum-

ley, Ken Robinson, Thomas Odom, Joy Kohler, Mark Stautberg, and David Morgan, all Lake Lanier area residents, set off on a clear 58 degree morning for what would be the longest swim most had undertaken. Five hours later they passed around a bottle of champagne on a little beach just south of Browns Bridge. Bachman, who grew up on Lake Lanier near the Olympic Venue, reached Browns Bridge in 2 hours, 53 minutes. The open water feat took her outside her familiar realm of the pool into the deep blue rocked with big boats cruising near the finish line on a sunny Sunday morning. “Open water is both a physical and mental challenge, it causes you to push yourself to limits maybe you thought you couldn't exceed,” Bachman said. The Brenau coach said she and Taylor plotted Bridge 2 Bridge in May, months before former Olympic swimmer Diana Nyad completed her historic swim from Cuba to Key West. “She is inspirational,” said Bachman, whose Lanier trip is likely to inspire her Brenau Tigers competing in NAIA meets. The Bridge 2 Bridge swim-

mers are among several others who set extreme goals on the north Georgia lake. One was Buford swimmer Chris Shoup who swam 43.3 miles round trip between Buford Dam and Thompson Bridge in June 2012. Like Shoup, most swimmers in the early Autumn event were accompanied by a support kayak or motor boat with friends who made sure captains spotted their swimmers. “Boat traffic was light until the swimmers approached Browns Bridge where they encountered some large cruisers and cigarette type boats creating some fun wakes to navigate through,” said Gainesville triathlete and Brenau assistant swim coach Jack Haire, who accompanied Bachman in a pontoon boat and swam alongside her for two 40-minute segments. Ironmen triathletes Crumley and Robinson originally intended to do the event as a relay, taking turns kayaking and swimming. “Then we said, “Why not just try it,” Crumley related. “It was fun … a different type of challenge,” said the finisher of 14 Ironmen who completed a double Ironman in March. She said that unlike her

triathlons and ultra races, in which she digs deep for a sprint finish, she had nothing extra to take under the bridge. “Swimming is my weakest,” she added. She set her strokes toward an unfinished house on a hill, where green framing walls became a target over her destination. “I just kept swimming toward that.” They swam “out in the open, but not directly in the middle” of the lake, Crumley said. Unlike the other participants, she and Robinson did not arrange to have support boats with them, something

they will do next time, she said. As a result, they encountered visibility and nutrition worries the others did not. “One time I looked up and thought, “Oh my, does that boat see us!” Crumley recalled. The two also had to maneuver back and forth from other swimmers’ support vessels to grab nutritional gels, bananas, water and encouragement. “Even in the water, you need something to drink; you get dehydrated.” “It was fun … it was a differSee Bridge, page 44

Time to get ready for the boat shows Boating season is over. I hope you have winterized your boat so you won’t have problems next spring. Now it’s time to get Christmas presents for Captain and crew and get ready for boat shows. The shows will have many new models next year because the boating industry will finish the year 5 percent ahead of last year. Some new models have already been announced. On the entry level models, there are bowriders and center consoles from 16’ to 24’ with 80-150 hp outboards. These make great boats to start family boating on a budget. Check out Bay Liner, Glastron and Sea Ray. In the ski-wake board category Master Craft has a new model with special options. I’m sure Correct-Craft’s Ski-Nautique will have a model equal to the competition and will satisfy skiers and wake board enthusiasts. Another type of boat that is becoming popular is a tugboat type, no frills yacht powered by a single diesel with thrusters for ease of operation. They go from 24’ to 40’ depending on how many crew members you have. These type boats would be great for leisurely cruising or the great loop trip. Another model that is increasing in popularity is the down east or lobster boats. Most are powered by single diesel engines with thrusters, some of the smaller ones (22’ to 27’) by outboard motors. Check out the builder Eastern Boats. To my surprise and I’m certain to a lot of people in the industry, large yacht builders have built spec-yachts for the Fort Lauderdale and Miami boat shows. In fact you might have seen Sea Ray’s two page ad that says the company will introduce a 51’ yacht at the Fort Lauderdale show and 61’ at the Miami show. Meanwhile Bertram has a full page ad urging you to get in line so you can have your 60’ convertible yacht built. Advertising big ticket yachts like this and building them for showing at the boat shows tells me next boating season will be one of the best in recent years. I haven’t heard about any new houseboats as yet, but I’ll bet there will be some with small diesel power which will be much more economical than the popular 454 C.I. engines that powers many houseboats. Lets hope we have great weather and safe boating in 2014. Setting records We usually think about records

being set or trying to set them, with the younger folks. Well, two mature adults (notice I didn’t say senior citizens), are showing the young crowd how it’s done. Diana Nyad swam the 112 miles from Cuba to Key West. She did this without a shark cage. Her first attempt was in 1978, she said her fifth and successful crossing would be her final. During her 53 hours crossing she fought waves, currents, and jellyfish stings. When she walked on to the beach at Key West she relayed theses quotes to the crowd: “Never, ever give up;” “You are never too old to chase a dream;” and “Swimming may appear a solitary sport, but it takes a team.” I bet her trainer is in demand. To prove her achievement wasn’t a fluke, several weeks later she swam for 48 hours in a pool in New York City for a worthy cause. Oh, by the way, Diana Nyad is 64 years young. We mentioned Stanley Paris in one of our last columns and his plan to solo navigate the world. He wants to beat Dodge Morgan’s record of 155 days he made on the yacht “American Promise” in 1986 at 55 years of age. Paris’s Farr design built by well-known shipwright Lyman Morse of Thomaston, Maine. It is 63’ and named “Kiwi Spirit.” The boat is designed for speed, sea kindliness, safety and ease of handling for the solo run. His record attempt will start and finish in Bermuda, the same as Dodge Morgan’s attempt. He expects to start in November and his trip will take him around the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. He thinks he can accomplish a record in 120 days. He has circumnavigated previously and competed in many ocean races. He feels he’s in top shape having competed in Iron Man Contests and practicing good physical therapy. Oh and by the way he is 76 years young. We congratulate Diana Nyad for her record and wish Stanley Paris fair winds and following seas in his record attempt. Gifts for the boater If you have kayak enthusiasts, the Hobie Mirage Sport could be for you. It’s great for exploring,

fishing, or even sailing. Features include Hobie’s Mirage drive pedal propulsion system, two built in rod holders, a retractable rudder, and a Lowrance ready system for installing electronics. It’s 9’7” long, weighs 63 pounds and costs $1,799. Info: www.hobicat.com. Spare air is a 48 liter emergency scuba oxygen canister; the same that was used in the America’s Cup in case of capsizing. It’s great to check for hull damage or put in ditch bags for emergencies. Cost is $300. Info: www.spareair.com What does your boat need? Here are some suggestions you might want to check. How about a new anchor and rode, PFDs, fenders, extra lines, flash lights, fire extinguishers or first aid kits. You might want a hand held radio/GPS for you Captain. Check your marina store for bargains or West Marine. America’s Cup wrapup It didn’t look like it could be done, and odds were against the Oracle team that started two races in the hole due to a penalty assessed for something they did last year on another boat. With all this against them it got down to one race to go with the Emirates New Zealand challenger. Then Oracle got hot and won all the races needed to win the Cup. This race will go down as one of the greatest come backs of all time. New Zealand had been so far ahead that interest in the race had fallen and it would have become a flop, but Oracle’s wins changed that perception on a daily basis. Shortly after the Cup activities were over an Australian vintner, Bob Oatley and the Hamilton Island Yacht Club launched an official challenge for the next America’s Cup. So the next Cup challenge will take place again in San Francisco where the defender’s yacht club is located. I would assume Emirates New Zealand will be back since they came within one race of winning the Cup. The Luna Rossa team that Emirates beat in the Louis Vitton Cup in order to challenge Oracle has not indicated they will be back, but I’d bet they will be. Nothing has been heard from the Artemis team, but I would not be surprised if they re-group and come back. I look for six or seven teams challenging Oracle for the Cup next time. The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup was also part of the races held at the Cup site. Ten national teams of sailors 19 to 24 years of

November 2013

Yes, it was a typical October for Georgia October certainly lived up to its expectations. Our summer humidity moved out. Temps for the most part, were typically cool, and we did not see a lot of rain. I was concerned about Tropical Storm Karen in early October, not so much from the wind, but from the heavy rains tropical systems could potentially bring. With our moist soil from the summer rains, a heavy rain-maker could have caused some serious issues. Fortunately, after states of emergency were declared from Louisiana to Alabama, hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on moving boats inland, and the news media outlets just about calling it the storm of the century, Tropical Storm Karen only brought a few rain showers to the gulf coast with winds in 20 mph range. I certainly loved the kind of weather we had during October. However, I also know October is the calm before the storm. November is a month of transition. Winter weather patterns begin to become more defined. Cold fronts continue to get stronger and more frequent. It is time for the autumn weather wars to begin, the time for air masses to collide. The battle ground this month is the Southeast. During the month of November we often see lines of storms developing ahead of approaching cold fronts. Most of us know these as squall lines. They are in fact, what we call a QLCS or quasi-linear convective system. They are powerful, often containing “bow echoes,” which indicate strong straight line winds. On occasion, when we get enough wind

shear (changing wind speed or direction with height) we will get a torGlenn nado spinning up on the Burns leading edge of the bow echo. They are exLanier tremely difficult to find Outlook because they are very small. They do however create powerful winds of more than 100 miles per hour. These systems will often cross states ahead of a cold front and are easily tracked by our radar. Fortunately, with the new technology we have, we can spot the rotation much better. Even without a tornado, winds can reach 70 mph in the bow echo straight line wind area. These are dangerous thunderstorms. Be aware November can produce the kind of storms we see in the spring. With that being said, November certainly has its fair share of magnificent weather days. It will be getting colder and on average, our first frosts and freezing temperatures can be expected during the first couple of weeks of the month. I know you all want to know if it will be a cold winter. I wish I could answer that right now. However, as I mentioned, weather patterns are just now taking shape for the winter. The Climate Prediction Center gives us, once again, a 50-50 chance of above or below average temperatures and rainfall this winter. We don’t have an El Nino or a La Nina right now. When those conditions exist it makes winter weather predictions much easier. We are currently in a neutral pattern, which tends to complicate things. You may recall last spring when all the tropical weather experts were saying how

bad the hurricane season was going to be. As it turned out, the tropics were as quiet as Lake Lanier during as ice storm! If you would like my humble opinion, I think the western United States will be warmer than average while we here in the Southeast enjoy a good old-fashion, normal Georgia winter with occasional cold fronts, a cou-

ple of days of flurries or snow showers, and no doubt a few days of sunshine and 70s thrown in from time to time. No matter how it turns out, I wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving and a great November. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

South Florida transplants living the ‘Lanier Life’ By Pamela A. Keene Two guys from South Florida have transferred their love of the “Salt Life” to Lake Lanier. Brothers Ryan and Kyle Hewitt kept seeing Salt Life T-shirts around Lanier and figured, “Why not give Lake Lanier’s lifestyle its own name?” “You guys are lucky here, that you can swim, boat and fish in your lake,” Ryan said. “We certainly can’t do that in the Florida lakes because there are alligators, crocodiles and water moccasins in our lakes in Florida. When Kyle and I came up here we fell in love with the place and this is our way of spreading the word.” The brothers live close to Gainesville Marina and met the owners of Skogies last summer. It became the first retail sales location for their “Lanier Life” Tshirts. Featuring an outline of Lake Lanier and the stylized words “Lanier Life,” the shirts are available in several colors for adults and youth. So far, they’ve ordered more than 1,000. “We’re going around to festivals and events around the lake to sell them,” Ryan said. “We’re also creating an online store in time for Christmas, we hope.” Ryan and his wife Martina and their two children now live in the Lake Lanier area. On-board guests can be fun if prepped in advance Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. When it comes to living aboard a boat, let’s just say it is not for everybody. The quarters can be too tight for some and the rocking motion can be quiet disconcerting for others. I guess that is why we have concluded that Sea Island Girl was meant to accommodate eight guests for happy hour and up to six for dinner. We often joke about sleeping arrangements, saying that she can only sleep two (plus our two dogs). To some, especially our family and closest friends, this may seem a bit harsh. Nevertheless, there is sound reasoning and experience to support our logic. Having overnight guests aboard can sometimes become a challenge. Just because someone is a long-time friend does not

Bob & Carolyn Wilson Cruising Wilsons

make them a good bedfellow. We all have our quirks and habits with which we are quite comfortable, but at times these can be troubling for others. My morning routine is not that unusual. I go to bed earlier than most and usually rise around five or six in the morning. I fix my coffee and enjoy watching the morning news on TV. However, when guests are aboard, the sound of someone moving about the boat, or the volume of the television can waken a light sleeper. Another example would be if our guests partied a little too late for our tastes, and we had an early departure and a lengthy journey the next morning. There are many other scenarios, all of which suggest the importance of choosing your overnight guests carefully.

Anytime guests are invited aboard a number of parameters must be set. First, there is only one captain on board who has the responsibility to ensure the safety of the crew. He, or she, has the final word. Secondly, it is best if all guests are familiar with the proper operation of certain onboard equipment, especially the head. And finally, guests should only participate in any boat handling chores when requested to do so by the Captain, and only when they fully understand what is expected of them. During our travels we have seen multiple problems arise when these guidelines are not made clear. An overly zealous guest, wanting to do his part, pumped diesel fuel into a water tank. Another tossed a dock line to a dock hand without securing the other end which contributed to the boat making a hard landing and subsequent hull damage. Alcohol often plays a role in causing most accidents and drownings, especially when the intake is not monitored carefully. When we have guests aboard we typically provide them with

certain guidelines in advance i.e. itinerary, use a soft sided bag to carry clothing, and wear boating shoes, not black high heels. Upon their arrival we will provide them with a tour of the boat to point out certain features that will make their stay more comfortable and instruct them on donning a lifejacket and the use of other safety equipment. In most instances, they have questions which we find best to address before setting off. As most everyone wants to help out it is fun for them to take them helm for a while, and when conditions warrant we give them an opportunity. Based upon our experience, we prefer to handle the docking and maneuvering of Sea Island Girl ourselves, mainly because we have developed a routine and have been successful.

Occasionally we will have an experienced guests assist. We find that even the most novice guest can enjoy a few days on the water when they fully understand and follow a few simple guidelines. Some of them have gone on to buy a boat of their own and with the help of a few pointers that we passed along, are having on-board guests of their own. We have determined that some of our happier days on the water have been with guests with similar boating experience. They understand most aspects of boat handling, and to us it is comforting to just sit back and enjoy being on your boat, with someone else at the wheel. - Until next time, Bob & Carolyn Wilson

Could ACFS group be the solution to tri-state water wars? 56-member body makes progress by mandating unanimous votes to approve actions By Jane Harrison or more than 20 years the waters from three rivers have rolled through Georgia, Alabama and Florida carrying a chorus of politicians croaking battle songs from Southern river banks to the U.S. Supreme Court. While governors’ official lyrics resound with the words “fight” and “frivolous” in the latest stanza of a dissonant water wars cacophony, a collection of independent voices is tuning up a difficult harmony invoking the sounds of science, consensus, and lasting resolution. Although little heard amidst the public clash of legal armor, the ACF Stakeholders (ACFS) have brought water users from each state to the table since 2009 to work toward a data driven plan to share the water from the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint river basins. Lake Lanier is the major reservoir on the system that flows from the mountains of North Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico. Florida governor silent The week that Florida Gov. Rick Scott filed suit in U.S.

F

Supreme Court over Georgia’s use of water in the Chattahoochee and Flint system, 56 members of the ACFS governing body, including 14 from Florida, unanimously approved a resolution asking the governor to delay the lawsuit and further legal action. As of late October, Gov. Scott had not responded to the resolution, which ACFS sent to him via email and regular mail. He is also thought to have been contacted by representatives of Florida government who were at the meeting in which the resolution was passed. “I don’t know if he has not received it or just intends to ignore it,” said Billy G. Turner, AFCS Chairman from Columbus. “That is his call; but ACFS will be moving forward either way. It would just be much better if we didn’t have the concern of the use of our data and reports against each other in a legal action.” Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens was expected to file a response to the lawsuit in the Supreme Court by Dec. 2 The suit claims that the Peach State’s “unchecked and growing consumption of water” threatens

the economic future of Apalachicola, which needs freshwater flow from Georgia rivers to nourish the oyster industry. The lawsuit is “targeted to one thing, the future of Apalachicola,” Scott said in an official statement. Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal fired off an official statement of his own, calling the action a “frivolous waste of time and money” that neglected Georgia’s attempts to reach an agreement. ‘No comment’ from government No official from either state – governors, attorney generals, or environmental protection directors – would speak to Lakeside about the litigation or the ACFS resolution. Nor would they respond to inquires about their familiarity with ACFS, an organization of tri-state stakeholders whose efforts to work together offer stark contrast to litigious warring of politicians. Betty Webb, administrator of the city at the center of the lawsuit, was among those who voted to request legal action be put on hold until ACFS could complete research on a Sustainable Water Management Project (SWMP).

She and other ACFS board members from the Apalachicola region declined to comment on what was described as a tense session during the ACFS quarterly meeting at Unicoi State Park. “To say that the lawsuit creates tension is certainly an understatement,” said Wilton Rooks, an ACFS executive board member who also serves as vice-president of the Lake Lanier Association. He said the fact that all ACFS members – local government officials, power producers, farmers and oystermen, manufacturers and conservationists – approved the resolution is a “fairly significant step.” Must be unanimous vote “Everybody has to agree 100 percent,” Rooks said of the ACFS rule that respects each individual’s right to a good night’s sleep after a vote. The group “functions under the rule that any action could be stopped by just one member in the 56 saying ‘I can’t live with this decision,’ ” Turner said. ACFS negotiations can hinge on compromise, even sacrifice, in an effort to reach consensus. They have found their way to

agreement on difficult decisions through guidance by the ACFS administrator, who is a staff member at Albany State University, and a Washington, D.C. based public policy dispute resolution organization. Rooks indicated the group navigated toward consensus on the resolution after weathering the first reactions of some calling for immediate withdrawal of the lawsuit. Instead, they agreed to request that the Florida governor take a look at the scientific model for sharing the water, due by June 2014, and then decide whether to continue legal action. “We firmly believe that any solution to this dispute will happen in a conference room, not a court room, and will rely on scientific data rather than legal debates,” Turner said via email. He added the organization raised about $1.5 million of non-governmental funds to perform a scientific model of the entire river system. “Through the consensus based process we have compiled more than 1,000 pages of data and documents about the ACF basin and See Water, page 44

Bicycle bill withdrawn after heated public hearing By Jane Harrison State Rep. Carl Rogers said he expected a large turnout for a hearing he scheduled on a bill that would have required registration tags on bicycles and restricted cycling in Georgia. But, what the Gainesville legislator did not expect was the near silence from area residents whose complaints about cyclists led him to file the bill last spring. Rogers announced he would withdraw House Bill 689 after more than 300 people, predominately cyclists, packed the Hall County Commission Room Oct. 7 in an occasionally revved up hearing with security on hand. Only four of about 40 speakers voiced support of the bill which was run down by cyclists passionate about their sport, Tea Party conservatives who railed it as government over reach, and tourism agents who said it threatened local economies and could even curtail visits from cyclists to Lake Lanier. Cyclists from around north Georgia and metro Atlanta rallied to vehemently protest the bill that would have required a $15 annual or $48 permanent registration fee and a tag on every bicycle riding

public roads. It would have also restricted cyclists riding in groups to single-file lines of four riders spaced four feet apart and put 50 feet between each line of cyclists. Additionally, it would have given state and local governments authority to close roads to cyclists and set times for cycling. Rogers said he intended the bill to address safety concerns reflected in more than 200 messages in two years from cyclists, motorists and property owners. It sat quietly in the House hopper for six months until an Atlanta radio station put it on the airwaves. The bills’ sponsor said his phone line and email in-box lit up for two weeks as word spread. He said he called the public hearing to bring all sides to the table and “find out what you need.” Lee Hawkins and Emory Dunahoo, both from Hall County, co-signed the proposed legislation and listened with Rogers to a hailstorm of criticism spewed forth from opponents in an atmosphere of strained civility. Rogers asked marshals to escort Cumming cyclist Robert Wilhite from the room after his turn at the microphone extended several minutes beyond the pre-

scribed three minute limit. Wilhite, who said, among other things, that the bill would put tags on kids’ bikes, mount a physical hazard on bike frames, and pose a “direct violation to a free society,” left the room without incident as marshals walked him out. An attendee yelled, “Tyranny!” and others hollered for the congressmen to answer Wilhite’s questions. The tense situation provoked some cyclists to later heckle the few speakers who supported the bill. Pam Miller, of Lula, the first to comment, did not endure the interruptions that spiked the speech of bill supporters after Wilhite’s exit. The hilly, curvy roads in northern Hall County are “not designed for cyclists,” she said, adding that more than ounce she’s rounded a curve and nearly hit a cyclist stopped in the road. Cyclists directed ire at Jim Syfan, whom Atlanta media reported had contributed money to the bill’s sponsors. more than $2,000 to Senator Casey Cagle, an avid bicyclist from Hall County. Syfan said he often sits and talks with cyclists who bike near his home on Clarks Bridge Road. “I don’t know how I’ve become the whipping boy for all this.” He said “It’s stressful” getting behind cyclists on the narrow road. Most are polite, he added, but he’s experienced dangerous encounters. “I can’t for the life of me figure out what’s got you guys so upset about registering your bikes,” he said. Clermont resident Calvin Stewart said he was “putting himself out to speak for all the folks who haven’t shown up tonight.” He said area motorists “just want to get where we’re going … on time” and are tired of driving white knuckled and cursing while cyclists ride “chit chatting” side by side on local roads. Many bikers described their activity as did Gainesville rider Jack Griffeth. “It’s not just something we do. It’s not just a casual activity. It’s our lives, a part of us,” said the cyclist who bikes 3,000 to 5,000 miles annually and loves the hills and curves of North Hall. He voiced strong ob-

jections to the bill, which he labeled as antagonistic to motorists and cyclists. He said the proposed legislation offered a “knee jerk reaction” to complaints rather than a realistic approach to improving bicycle safety. Wider road shoulders and maintained bike lanes would help, he said, as would enforcement of the existing law that requires motorists to allow three feet between their vehicle and a bicycle when passing. Several cyclists said law officers seemed unaware of the “three feet law” when they told them about cars whizzing close to their handlebars. Griffeth also admonished cyclists to ride safely by signaling turns, attaching lights, and wearing bright clothing. Rather than legislation, education through cycling clubs, businesses and community groups can create a safer environment for cyclists and motorists, he said. Robert Fitzpatrick, an officer of the Lanier Tea Party Patriots, said he approached the bill “from the perspective of liberty and the unalienable right to go where we want to go.” Fitzpatrick, who is not a cyclist, said the bill is an See Bikes, page 49

Reporter recalls rage, good Samaritans during biking incident seven years ago By Jane Harrison I never knew what hit me. I was pedaling at about 20 miles per hour. The approaching vehicle, heading in the opposite direction, was probably going about 45 mph. Wham! My head suddenly slammed backward as an object hit my face. I somehow kept my balance and looked down as I squeezed the brakes. Blood streamed from the left side of my face onto my forearms, legs and bike frame and spilled onto the road. I looked behind me and saw a dark SUV speeding away. Horrified and bewildered, I began screaming on the side of the road. The next three passing motorists stopped to help, stayed with me until an ambulance came and offered to keep my bike until I could retrieve it. One even gave me his shirt to hold against my bleeding cheek. That Sunday evening, Oct. 1, 2006, I became a target of sociopathic rage, deranged thrill-seeking, or some other demented outlash. Why did this happen to me, a lone female cyclist biking Lula Road in North Hall County? Was the perpetrator angry at cyclists? Hateful toward women? Mad at society? “There are a lot of really mean people out there,” said the Hall County deputy who came to the hospital to ask if I could identify who criminally assaulted me. I could not. Nor could I understand how anyone could commit such a random violent act.

Until then, I had spoken often about the courtesy of drivers in Hall County. “Never had an incident in more than 10,000 miles,” I had said. I’d heard other cyclists mention objects thrown at them and drivers threatening them; but somehow I thought I was immune. After all, I biked by myself, stayed over on the right, and stopped at stop signs. I was, and still am, a polite and cautious cyclist. It didn’t seem to matter. I think that the vast majority of drivers on our roads are like the three who stopped to help me. I will always remember their kindness. The criminal who hit me is a rarity on the pastoral hills of North Hall. I also feel that common respect among cyclists and motorists, along with courtesy, good sense, adherence to and enforcement of existing laws are key to safely sharing the roads. But, the numbness and occasional throbbing on the left side of my face remind me that there are mean people out there whose disregard for other humans and the law threatens everyone on the road and in our community. Every time I look in the mirror and see the asymmetry, undetectable to most, I wish I could have put that felon in jail. Would they have thrown that object if they knew how badly it could hurt a cyclist? Or did they intend to take out a biker? I’ll never know. But I’m still out there!

Public art paints the Olympic tower, enlivens downtown Gainesville By Jane Harrison Shades of red, maroon, and pink form the muscular physiques of a rower and kayaker painted on the grandstand wall of the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue tower, site of the first public art project in Hall County. The bold strokes of the characters, which resemble super heroes with hulking shoulders and rippling biceps, stand out against the blue channel where Olympians raced in 1996. The mural painting by Argentinean urban artist Franco Fasoli, also known as JAZ, was part of The Traveling Show, a weeklong visual and performance art program that blended contemporary Fasoli dance, lectures, and paint strokes. The project, spearheaded by The Arts Council of Gainesville, grew out of a $4,000 grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts and matching $2,000 donation from the North Georgia Community Foundation. The funding was split between artists from Living Walls and gloAtlanta, whose creations colored the tower and livened up downtown Gainesville. “The community came together to make this happen,” said Arts Council Executive Director Gladys Wyant. Many partners, including the Quinlan Visual Arts

Center, city and county parks departments, the canoe/kayak and rowing clubs, Gainesville Hall ’96, Vision 2030, Brenau University, Main Street Gainesville, and area restaurants, collaborated to introduce public art to the local community, she said. The journey began after the Quinlan Visual Arts Center was selected for an exhibit of 28 paintings from the state art collection. The exhibit, entitled “Inspired Georgia,” features works from the 1970s to 1990s and runs through Dec. 8. While the Quinlan show spotlights historical art and culture, the tower painting depicts the contemporary craft of Living Walls, a non-profit troupe of international artists who paint murals and conduct workshops, often in urban areas. Fasoli said the Olympic venue on Lake Lanier “was one of the best spots I’ve painted in my life.” He added that the three story wall appears small against the broad water of the Olympic channel. He said the idea for mirrored images of a rower and paddler emerged as he thought about the two sports sharing the same space. He vanquished an earlier vision of a bear on the tower for what he knew would be a more appropriate rendering. He called his creation “an homage to the sports.” He began a chalk sketch the morning of Oct. 19, scaling the

tower on a motorized lift provided by Gainesville and Hall County parks departments. He used rollers, brushes, and a sprayer to apply about three and a half-gallons of red, white and black latex acrylic to the tower wall facing the grandstands and Clarks Bridge Road. He matched the red and white edges of the mural to the adjoining sides bearing the iconic images of a paddler and rower that have long adorned the tower. Living Walls co-founder and executive director Monaca Compana watched from the grandstands as Fasoli put the finishing touches on around 4 p.m. Oct. 21. “This is one of the prettiest settings we have ever worked with,” she said, adding the mural artists usually work in downtown areas. Prior to coming to Gainesville, Living Walls painted two wildcats on a hardware store wall in Clayton, offering a tribute to the high school mascot. The Traveling Show program included a street dance downtown by gloAtlanta, a modern dance troupe whose physicality combines ballet-like grace and writhing energetic movements. Artists’ talks and performances at local schools, the Quinlan and The Arts Center were also planned. As of press time a Mural Reveal and gloAtlanta performance was scheduled for Saturday night at the Olympic Venue.

shared our information with them,” Turner said. ACFS has collected data submitted by water use consultants and research performed by the University of Georgia, Auburn University, Florida State University and University of Florida. Turner and Rooks both expressed concern that information from the unfinished project might wind up in legal wrangling between the states. That worry makes the final phase of the project more difficult for a group that has attempted to be transparent, Rooks said. Rooks said SWMP researchers are exploring possibilities for the Corps to operate reservoirs more efficiently and keep more in reserve to achieve the minimum flow required for Apalachicola’s needs. The Lanier stakeholder said that a growing number of people are saying that the best way to resolve the water conflict is through

Continued from page 42 “overreaching piece of legislation” and that local municipalities are better suited to deal with cycling issues Amy Booker, president of the Dahlonega Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce, said her agency had gotten 1,438 emails from cyclists drawn to North Georgia by the biggest cycling event in the Southeast, the Six Gap Century/Three Gap Fifty. Cyclists bring millions of dollars to the area, she said. They eat at local restaurants, shop in Dawsonville, and play on Lake Lanier. She reported getting email messages that read, “We won’t come there if it’s anti-cyclist.” Joseph Neuwirth, a 72-year old cyclist from Cumming, urged the congressmen to withdraw the bill before it’s considered in the 2014 General Assembly. About a half hour later, Rogers announced he would do just that. The crowd stood and cheered. Hawkins tore up his copy of the bill. Dunahoo said he knew it didn’t stand a chance. Hawkins later commented some aspects of the bill might resurface. “I don’t know where it’s going to go,” he said. “I’m surprised we didn’t hear from more of the motorists” whose messages have been very angry, he said. Rogers surmised the meeting laid out the issues that communities and legislators need to work on to create a safer en-

vironment for sharing the road. Gainesville cyclist Craig Bailey summarized it a different way. “It was a waste of time and money.” He added the legislators could have announced they were going to withdraw the bill when the meeting commenced. Those who were going to gripe would have left, he said, and those who wanted to work constructively on the issues might have accomplished something. Vista Verde Ranch is the best of the West

The cow all the guests at the Vista Verde Ranch had named “Diabolical” had his viciouslooking eyes piercing into mine as he made an instant pirouette, but my anticipation was way ahead of him! Even before his athletic move, I had jerked my horse Gunnar’s head in the right direction and slapped him with the reins to cut off the bad cow. That turned him back toward one of the best cowboys in the West ... Terry Wegener, where he would have no escape! Terry and I had cut this bad boy out of a herd of Texas cows to teach him a lesson and make him behave. We ran him to the middle of a corral about the size of a football field with Terry and his prize horse, Gun Shy Gangster (better known as Gunny) on one side and me and Gunnar on the other. In order to wear the cow down, we cut him off at every angle to keep him between us until his tongue was hanging out. In retrospect, I labeled our efforts ... Cow Soccer! No doubt riding and learning about horses and cows is one of the main reasons that people visit dude ranches in Colorado, but Vista Verde Ranch offers so much more. They truly make an extra effort to let you experience everything that they offer, but will go out of their way to see that all of your other requests are satisfied. Much of the staff is comprised of seasonal young people from all over the country who are checked thoroughly ... including a personal visit from General Manager, Ben Martin. Therefore, the youngsters and the permanent staff all have a zest for life, love to engage with guests in conver-

Though I have ridden horses off and on since my childhood, I learned more about them during my week at Vista Verde than I could have imagined. Just being around Terry Wegener is an education in the mannerisms and psychology of horses. He and his wife are also involved in the training and riding of the Denver Broncos horse Thunder at the football games. The horse program at Vista Verde Ranch is top of the line when compared to any other in the West ... partly because of the very large heated indoor riding area. This venue allows Terry and other trainers like Annie Bolognino from Montana and Nicky Throgmartin from Indiana to work with the younger horses and give special Horsemanship Clinics for guests regardless of the weather. The Mare Barn also gives the breeding stock a quiet place away from the central ranch to deliver and raise the foals. Though Terry is in charge of the breeding and

horse sales, Annie and Nicky primarily work with the younger horses and share this experience with guests of the ranch. Because Vista Verde Ranch is located in the National Forest and has access to the wild and beautiful Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area, horseback riding and hiking trails are numerous, adventuresome and breathtaking! You can even ride your horse to a hidden sanctuary among colorful Aspen trees to partake in Wild Yoga with expert instructor Kelli King. I found the fly fishing and guides at the ranch to be knowledgeable, personable and quite talented in the numerous waters available to anglers visiting Vista Verde. The possibilities range from small creeks to rivers to still water lakes and from very simple fishing to extremely difficult. Rainbow, Cutthroat, Brook and Brown Trout are always possible catches as well as Mountain Whitefish and Grayling. A true hero from the US Army’s Special Forces, Brandon Martin, is the Director of the Fly Fishing Program and a pleasure to be with anytime. His expert fly fishing partner in the program is Bubba Veteto from Colorado who loves to hang out with the chefs in the kitchen when he’s not guiding guests. It would take a book to relate all there is to see and enjoy at Vista Verde Ranch near the famous ski resort village of Steamboat Springs, CO. One of the most important things to know is that any visit to this ranch is AllInclusive ... and they live by that even to the point of free pick up

and delivery to the airport that is nearly an hours drive from the ranch. The Lodge and Cabin rooms are authentic log structures with all the comforts seen in other fine resorts with one exception ... no TVs in the rooms. The diverse cuisine created by top chefs can range from simple barbecue to intricate gourmet meals with many different wines. Summer activities include numerous horse-related opportunities, barn dancing, fly or spin fishing, mountain biking, hiking, yoga, cooking classes, wine tasting classes, rock climbing, rafting, local shopping tours, and photography just to name a few. There’s probably not a bad time of year to visit Vista Verde Ranch, but I feel that I hit it at the most opportune moment for the best photography in the early fall. At the beginning of the week, the weather was like summer with midday temperatures reaching into the high 60s and falling to the 40s at night. Soon the mercury began to fall, and all the bright gold Aspen trees changed in two days. During the last part of the week, we were blessed

with a blanket of more than a foot of powdery snow. It was the perfect time to experience the gorgeous metamorphosis that occurs annually in the mountains and valleys of Northwestern Colorado. In my opinion and that of other guests, this is the best, most diverse, and client friendly working ranch in the Western USA. However, it is very busy throughout the year, so reservations in advance are necessary for couples or families. For more information or bookings, go to the Vista Verde website (www.vistaverde.com) or call them toll-free at: 800-526-7433. Just one week in the early fall was a revelation to me of this part of Colorado and gave me a taste of summer, fall and winter on a ranch. Now, my dream is to return one day to experience the winter ski season when the ranch is all decked out for a Cowboy Christmas. Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

Things are returning to normal for autumn operations at the Buford Dam Project Management Office following the recent government shutdown. Rangers are resuming their fall and winter duties, including the processing of applications for the remaining dock permits and other assignments as we begin the 2014 Federal Fiscal Year. Additionally, Sawnee Campground is again open for fall and winter campers to enjoy the quiet time on the lake when there’s not as much boat traffic and the leaves are turning colors. Sawnee is open on a first-come, firstserved basis from September 20, 2013, until March 23, 2014. Then it will close for two weeks in preparation for the summer recreation season. Sawnee will be open for the summer starting on April 10, 2014. Through the fall and winter, campers can select their campsite and pay, review fees, rules and regulations, or obtain maps of the park and lake at the self-service registration station by the campground’s gatehouse off Buford Dam Road. Although the gatehouse is not staffed fulltime, park rangers and camp hosts will be making rounds regularly. Sawnee Campground offers many beautiful waterfront sites

Rule No. 8 – Action to Avoid Collision explained This is the next to the last column in a series focusing on navigation rules. Lakeside incorrectly published the final installment in the October issue. If you missed the final column it can be found in the archives section of www.lakesidenews.com. Taking action to avoid a collision or to reduce the risk of one is basically the process of three tasks performed in this sequence: • Gather from various sources visual, hearing, conventional and electronic navigation • Process the information • Evaluate whether a danger or risk of collision before deciding on what action to take. In Rule 8 it is very clearly stated that if you still need more time to make an assessment on what to do then you are to slacken your speed, stop, or reverse to allow for that to happen. The pages that contain this rule are filled with directives, for example: • A substantial turn is preferred – This will give a visual cue and become “readily appar-

ent” to the other vessel that you are taking action • Your action to avoid does not produce risk of collision with another vessel in close proximity • Action shall be made “positive and in ample time” to avoid a close quarters situation. All of this sounds very simple to learn. The real challenge is to interpret the situation accurately and stay slightly ahead of the unfolding scenario by visualizing the possible outcomes. Excessive speed, especially in unknown waters and congested areas, is the main culprit for collisions. In the navigation rules the obligation to comply includes not only the give-way vessel but the

stand-on one as well and is explained in fine detail in other parts of the regulation. If you as operator of your boat, feel that the action by the give-way vessel is not adequate enough to avoid collision then you are required to take immediate action to avoid. This requirement of action on your part directs the focus to one specific question you should always ask when underway and involved in a Rules of the Road situation: Will the other vessel take proper action to avoid collision? That is difficult to answer correctly and as a skilled and knowledgeable boater you should be prepared to take action just in case the other vessel does not. Action of the person in charge of a moving watercraft, as explained in this navigation rule, is basic common sense. Steve Johnson, US Coast Guard (ret). is with CPO Johnson, Inc. MORE INFO:

The war of the leaves; raking it all in ... at 3 a.m. The street I live on is sort of a war zone. But it is not directed at people. Instead, the annual March of Folly is directed at leaves – that’s right, my neighbors are all crazy leaf killers. It never occurred to me that decimating the leaf population was a precursor to ruling the world. I should point out that these psychotic masters of leaf annihilation don’t necessarily limit their crusade to the months of Fall like most people who have only a passing grudge against Mother Nature. Apparently, it is so personal with them that they have dedicated themselves to a year round vigilant need to banish the leaf population even when leaves are still attached to trees, and thus presenting no imminent danger to, really, anyone. And yet, the crusaders on my street nonetheless feel the need to harass the leaves anyway. This is usually accomplished by cranking up their Uber-leaf blowers and assaulting those leaves careless enough to have detached themselves from their given tree and fallen to the ground.

Phillip Sartain Break from the Lake

MORE INFO: Email: attypbs@mindspring.com Once they crank up, of course, you never hear the screaming of the clumsy leaf as it is carefully corralled and safely extradited to the great leaf pile in the sky. In the meantime, all the remaining blower freaks in the neighborhood have mobilized into a cacophony of permanent ear damage just to signal the alert in the face of a single errant leaf. Given all that, you can just imagine the mania that goes on in my neighborhood about this time of year. And for the most part, I try to be a patient guy when is comes to run of the mill yard maintenance. I don’t have a problem with the leaf commandos and their weapons of leaf destruction.

But I do have, however, an issue with leaf maneuvers at 3 in the morning. At first, I thought it was just someone tuning up for a full frontal assault in the morning, and that it would pass shortly. Half a screaming hour later I decided that I was wrong. Because I could not sleep, and my sound canceling headphones were in the shop, I decided that it would be OK to stroll across the street and see what was up with this particular insomniatic leaf warrior. As is usually the case with these people, not only was the blaring noise at maximum eardrum rupturing capacity, but the guy’s whole house was lit up like an aircraft carrier. Keeping a safe distance, I shouted out, “Hey, how is the blowing going?” With startling quickness, the guy turned, dropped to one knee, and leveling his blower at me with his hand on the switch. “This is a restricted leaf area, you are ordered to leave now.” “Easy,” I said. “Don’t mess my hair up, but can you just put down the blower for a minute?” When

Vesper’s Marine Service

he didn’t respond, I tried again. “Did you know that it is 3:30 in the morning on a week day?” Instead of responding to me, he started talking on a radio and the next thing I know, I hear blowers cranking up all up and down the street. I’ve never been one to back down to a leaf blower, so I stood my ground – besides, I think there’s a law that allows me to stand my ground where leaves are concerned. Next thing I know, someone is standing beside me. “It’s OK, I’ll take it from here.” The guy was wearing jet black cameo pajamas. “He’s just a little stressed. He has

seen so many leaves this year. It takes its toll, you know. He’s one of us, we’ll get him the help he needs.” Being a little spooked by the PJs, I returned home and climbed back in the bed. The blowing had, mercifully, stopped. Rousing herself, my wife asked what was going on. “Nothing much. Just the Black Ops Unit keeping us safe from the blood thirsty leaves again this year.” What a bunch of blowhards. Phillip Bond Sartain is a Gainesville, GA lawyer and freelance writer.
