INSIDE THIS ISSUE Water Innovation Center

When Gwinnett County opened the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center in 2001 to process the county’s wastewater, officials envisioned that it would become a model for wastewater treatment across the nation. Fast forward to 2018. Page 26

Thanksgiving Day races

A flock of turkey trots, gobble wobbles and “can” runs hatched around Lake Lanier about a decade ago. On Thanksgiving Day area runners and walkers hoping to burn some calories before they fill up don’t have far to drive to the starting line. Page 34

Fall at Lake Lanier

The sweltering heat of summer is subsiding and Lake Lanier is magically changing. It is a quieter, calmer lake during the fall season that allows birds, wildlife and fish to again appear in greater numbers. By Pamela A. Keene Pull out your winter gear and prepare for major snow at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands starting November 16 through February 24. No kidding. “It’s going to be big, really big,” said Darby Campbell, president of Safe Harbor Development LLC, developers of Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. “Our License to Chill Snow Island’s six huge, high-capacity snow machines will be producing enough to keep fresh snow for building snowmen, having snowball fights and keeping the giant snow tubing mountain going all winter. In fact, our snow mountain is the longest, steepest and fastest ion the Southeast. We’ve spared no expense to make License to Chill’s Snow Island the best winter destination around.” The company has invested more than $3.5 million in snow machines and another $2.5 million to $3 million to build the large site where the snow mountain tubing will take place. Trees have been removed and the topography regraded to set the scene for plenty of fast-paced snow tubing. Other snow ma-

chines will be interspersed throughout License to Chill Snow Island. “Virgil Williams started the process when he introduced snow to Lanier Islands a couple of years ago,” Campbell said. “We’ve taken that concept to a whole new level, putting in six snow machines, instead of the two that were there in previous years, and these are brand-new high-capacity snow producers that will hold up even if it’s warm and rainy.” This year, a covered ice-skating rink is located near the mountain and carnival rides for all ages will be available, including a Ferris Wheel. With another $600,000 investment, Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is also upping the ante by expanding License to Chill Island from the tunnel all the way down the boardwalk to Landshark Landing with fire pits, Christmas trees and lights, and more food and beverage options along the way. “People will have even more reasons to park their cars and take PHOTO BY ALAN HOPE time to see all there is to see and Construction of Margaritaville’s License to Chill Snow Island well under do,” Campbell said. way in this photo taken in late October. The feature will include what’s See Lanier Islands, page 23 being billed as the fastest snow tubing hill in North America.

By Pamela A. Keene By the time you read this article it will be less than a month until the 2018 Lake Lanier Parade of Boats. Presented by Lanier Partners, this year’s event is slated for December 8, so you have plenty of time to register at www.lakelanierparadeofboats.com, come up with the design of your boat decorations and rally your family and friends to take place in one of the most colorful events on the lake. Ask Lisa Bond. She was the winner of the Spirit Award in the 2017 parade for her sailboat entry. The slip holder at Sunrise Cove created a huge Christmas tree of multi-colored lights. “We used candy-cane accents on the lifelines and the rub rails had white lights outlining the deck,” said the long-time resident of Snellville who moved here from Hawaii with her husband Stuart and daughter Jeanette. “The Christmas parades in Hawaii were always so beautiful. Stuart always dressed up as Santa and we’d sing Christmas carols, and it was so much fun.” Bond said that the Lake Lanier Parade had been on her family’s radar for a couple of years, but with other obligations, the time wasn’t right until 2017. They decorated their 47-foot Beneteau sailboat, got a generator that actually broke last year, and

Crappie fishing We are beginning to catch some bigger fish now. Expect this pattern to continue over the next several weeks. Certain docks and certain brush piles are holding bigger fish. Though you will find fish on both deep and shallow brush piles, it is harder to detect the bite the deeper they are. For that reason, some of us have downsized to a two pound high visibility yellow “Vicious Fishing Panfish” line. I highly recommend it! The quality and the strength of the line is very impressive. Having said that, if you are a regular fisherman, make it a habit to replace your line once a month. This is an inexpensive fishing line, and worth the effort. The fish are holding tight on stand-alone brush piles at 20 to 25 foot depths and the smaller fish are more shallow. Your fishing line will at some point come into contact with the brush pile, which is another reason that maintaining fresh line may save you from losing fish. If you are not losing jigs occasionally, you are not getting into the brush piles

far enough to trigger a bite. A hair jig is my “go-to” bait for fishing brush piles this time of year. The feathers seem to give it more presence, which catches the fish’s interest. One 1/24 ounce is our go-to jig. On a windy day, use the double rig method (tying two jigs to your line about a foot apart), or use a 1/16 ounce if you prefer a single rig. When the bite is really subtle, an old seasoned fisherman’s trick is to use a closed faced Zebco 33 reel and while retrieving the jig, rest the line on the trigger finger of the hand holding the rod while applying slight pressure to the line with the thumb of the same hand. Make sure you are not interrupting the flow of the retrieve. This will help you feel the bite more effectively. How to reduce spiders on your dock 12 LAKESIDE

By Bev Knight One of the most common complaints of lake residents is the uncanny ability of spiders to cover your dock in webs. In planning for a day at the lake, most of us have swept down a hundred webs on the dock only to find them right back in the same place the very next day. Frustrating, right? While they help control the pest population around your dock by eating bugs, they are still an annoyance that most of us would like to minimize. You may be inclined to reach for a can of Raid; but, that could pollute our lake and is definitely NOT allowed by the Corps of Engineers. Here are a few natural ideas that might help minimize your spider population. One easy solution is to introduce a colony of ladybugs to the area around your dock. These are nature’s vacuum cleaners for unwanted garden pests. They eat spider eggs and baby spiders. They also eat aphids, spider mites, scale, many soft-bodied insects and even mildew. Did you

know you can order live ladybugs on Amazon? For a little over $5, you can get 1,500 live bugs to help minimize your spider problem. Before you release them, spray the area’s vegetation with water because they are more likely to stay if there are wet plants in the vicinity. Then release them and watch them go to work. This is a great project to do with kids. It teaches them that nature has an incredible way of balancing the populations of its creatures, and that there are definitely alternatives to chemicals in controlling pesky critters. Another option is to create a natural spray that repels spiders. You may have heard that a simple mist of peppermint oil, water, and a few drops of detergent will repel arachnids. But there are other elements that are also repugnant to spiders. All of these would be mixed with water to make a spray then sprayed in a fine mist directly on the surface where the spiders spin their webs. Examples include boiled tobacco, pepper, cloves, turmeric and more. Certain essential oils can

also be used. They need to be in a glass spray bottle because some react to plastic, and be sure to Google the essential oil you are considering to make sure it isn’t toxic to fish. It’s a tiny quantity, but you still want to be mindful of its impact on the ecosystem. Add a few drops of dishwashing detergent and spray away. To spiders, that would be like building your home on a skunk’s nest, so hopefully they will choose to relocate in the woods where they can flourish. We all want to keep the lake clean and free of chemicals. With a little effort, you can redirect your local spider population to the nearby woods where they can eat all the insects they want. Then you can enjoy your dock without getting a face full of spider webs. Bev Knight is the lead agent for Lake Lanier specialists the Good Life Group, Keller Williams Lanier Partners. • Parade

Continued from Page 8 will be done on the day of the parade. “It will be fast and furious starting early on Saturday morning,” Bond said. While encouraging more sailors to take part, she and her family said they will be glad to have more sailboats on the water this year. After all, the parade is for a good cause. “We had such a good time at the parade last year that we participated in this summer’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run, which also benefits children’s charities,” she said. The 2018 Parade of Boats takes place on Saturday, December 8. This year there will be three categories – cruisers/powerboats, with a $75 per boat registration fee; sailboats, with a $100 per boat registration fee; and houseboats, with a $125 registration fee. Registration includes a courtesy slip, side space or mooring at Margaritaville for the evening, two long-sleeve souvenir Tshirts and a tour of Magical Nights of Lights. Boats will marshal at designated points

November 2018

near each marina and proceed down the lake to Landshark Landing at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands for public viewing and the awards ceremony. Participants from private docks can join in the marshaling area of the marina of their choice. The event raises money for children’s charities, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier, Toys for Tots and Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes. Sponsorships for the event are available and include – depending on the level – boat parade entries, raffle tickets plus recognition in the Captain’s Goodie box, brochures and event program. More information and registration forms are available at www.lakelanierparadeofboats.c om. “Anytime you can support local causes, especially those that benefit children, it’s good to participate,” she said. “We have a special needs grandson, so children’s organizations are near and dear to our hearts. And it’s all about giving back.”

Let The Pootoon do the dirty work on your marine toilets By Pamela A. Keene The Pootoon on Lake Lanier is more than a mobile pump-out service. The company also provides repairs and inspections for marine toilet systems. “My wife Tessa and I were on our way back from a cruise to Cozumel about 18 months ago and started talking about starting a business on the lake,” said company founder and owner Michael Moon. “We realized there was a market for a company that combined pump-out and repairs. Then Tessa came up with the name.” The company currently operates a pontoon-based traveling pump-out and repair business on the lake. The couple lives in Cumming and travels the whole lake, with customers in marinas and private docks. He can also provide services for boats in private driveways and dry storage. “We’ve put a lot of hours on our motor since we launched the business,” Moon said. We’re on our second outboard motor and our third impeller since last spring. In addition to pump-outs,

Moon said that he sees many marine toilets that need repair, toilets that some boat owners would rather get rid of than bother with fixing them. “Sometimes it’s just a replacement of a joker valve, a duck-bill valve or a toilet bowl gasket to get it back in operating condition,” he said. Moon spent a dozen years in the automotive service industry, working most recently with Infiniti. He recommends regular marine sanitary system maintenance to avoid issues. “Coming into winter, now is a good time to have your system checked out,” he said. “It can catch problems before they become worse.” He also says that proper winterizing will help prevent issues using RV antifreeze. To help with odors, he recommends using a holding tank deodorizing product. “Be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle,” he said. “Most people just dump the product into the tank after they’ve been pumped out, but you really need to use it in between pump-

Bin There, Dump That solves construction, junk haul-off problems

By Pamela A. Keene You can’t help but smile to yourself at the name of the company: Bin There, Dump That, a waste disposal company that specializes in roll-off dumpsters for residential service. The firm’s bright lime-green containers can solve problems from collecting move-out garbage to providing a repository for home-remodeling construction debris. Kevin and Jessica Stearns opened the East Metro Atlanta Area franchise of the national company about 20 months ago to serve northeast Georgia, including Hall and Forsyth counties and areas around Lake Lanier. “Whether you’re cleaning out your garage or basement, remodeling a kitchen or bathroom or just need a dumpster for a project, we can be there on the same day, as long as you call before 2 p.m.,” Stearns said. “And we show up with clean, nice dumpsters in a variety of sizes.” Dumpsters from 4- to 20-yards are typically placed in a driveway. The company puts protective boards beneath the dumpster to protect the concrete from breakage or cracking. Once the client has finished with the dumpster, the company hauls all the contents to the landfill. Staff from Bin There, Dump That even cleans up the site. “We’ve seen some pretty nice

Bike Night turns into gift of a van

What started out as an idea at a Buford American Legion Bike Night several months ago turned into the gift of a pre-certified 018 Kia Sedona Mini-van specialized van for a single mom and her three children. Thanks to the advocacy of American Legion member Derek Dugan, his fellow motorcycle-rider veterans and 11@11 Business Development Group people started working to secure the donation of a van to Tammy Puckett. She’s the mother of Sarah, Austin and Connor, all of whom have special medical conditions. One of my faults (although I prefer to call them “character traits”) is that I’m prone to prejudge people when I first meet them and therefore probably miss out on a lot. One incident that comes to mind occurred years ago when I owned a 40-foot wooden yawl. She was built of cedar planks over oak ribs in the Lawley yard at Neponset, Mass. in 1916. Of course she required a bit of maintenance and each year spent some time hauled out in the shipyard. During one of these haulouts I was taking a break and sitting around BS-ing with some of the ship’s carpenters, when this one old guy says “I went sailing once and I’ll never do it again.” All I could think of was “Here comes another boring story about how the boat heels too much or it’s too much work or the wind died etc, etc.” But when he explained that he had gotten a job oystering aboard a 70-foot skipjack in the Chesapeake my ears perked up! As a student at the University of Maryland I had worked oystering on the Chesapeake during one summer “break.” He said that on his first day on

His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

Hurricane Michael causes catastrophic damage As I ended my article last month, I said we would be watching the Gulf of Mexico intently during October for any tropical development. I was especially curious to see what would evolve as far as tropical weather systems. Last month, the Gulf of Mexico was VERY warm. In looking at the average temperature over the past 30 years, I noticed the water temperatures were running about 2-3 degrees warmer than they would typically be at this time of year. Down in the Caribbean, there was a weather disturbance that caught my eye around October 1st. There was no wind shear anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico. The water was extremely warm. I knew, if it moved from its proximity to land, all it could do was get stronger and more powerful. On October 7th, after a week of simmering over the warm water, it became a tropical depression. The National Hurricane Center gave it an 80 percent chance of becoming a tropical storm at that point. Everything I saw pointed to strengthening. There was nothing to stop it. It took a day to become Tropical Storm Michael and a day later, it was Hurricane Michael. The development was quick. Now we had to figure out where it was going to go and what the conditions would be like in the atmosphere ahead of the storm. That job went to the Hurricane Hunters. The Air Force sent up its P3 Gulfstream IV jet to sample the air and atmos-

pheric conditions in the environment ahead of the storm. There was Glenn nothing but bad news coming back with the Burns telemetry. There was no meteorological reason to Lanier stop it from becoming a Outlook monster. When the first advisory came out, the projected path took it through the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico, crossing the very warm Loop Current. In addition, there were several warm water eddies, with surface water temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. The warmer the water, the more “octane for a tropical system to develop. And develop it did. By October 9th, we had a major Category 3 hurricane and it was getting even stronger. By the 10th, when it made landfall, it was a CAT 4 with sustained winds of 155 miles per hour and wind gusts of 175 miles per hour! It was a beast that was 400 miles wide and looked like a buzz saw on the satellite pictures as it cut a direct path through the Gulf of Mexico, toward the Florida Panhandle. As it was about to make landfall, I told my colleagues here in Severe Weather Center 2, I was seeing something I had not seen since Hurricane Andrew hit Miami in 1992. There were little perturbations rotating around the eye wall of the storm. I knew I had seen them before. They were vortices of powerful winds rotating around the eye. I knew the devastation was happening at ground zero, in this case Mexico

Be expertly prepared for ‘The Johnson Curve’

Each and every time you set out on the water there is the chance of something undesirable happening. Safe boating is a duty achieved by experience and proper application of training. There are basically three levels of risk when it comes to vessel operation, regardless of RISK location and type of boat. This premise also incorporates the use of advanced marine electronics versus more of a visual method of directing the vessel. It’s a comparison that needs to be understood by anyone in charge of navigation. The first is the GREEN sector to the left of the gauge, the beginning of the curve. Calm weather and smooth water, all systems functioning as designed, voyage plan being followed, the driver at the helm is capable and properly trained. The main method of piloting is visual reference, also utilizing GPS charting on a multi-function display, practicing with other sensors if equipped to learn how they operate. An update on the America’s Cup races

The 35th America’s Cup races were held in Bermuda during the summer of 2017. The series started in 1851 and is sometimes called the United States’ oldest sporting event. A tractor with hay-rides will travel along the holiday-themed beach, and kids can have their photos taken with Santa under the Fin Dunker near Landshark landing. The Cat 5 ride will also be open with a winter theme. “When we were building the Island at Pigeon Forge, the biggest thing I saw was that people really needed something to do in the winter, so we’ve activated Margaritaville at Lanier Islands to create even more to do,” Campbell said. “In Pigeon Forge, there was a huge increase in traffic and energy. That’s what it will be like at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands this winter.” The company has pumped up Magical Nights of Lights drivethrough with plenty of new twists. Nineteen new light displays have been added, many with tropical themes to reflect the Buffett lifestyle. The display area has expanded to include the beach, and some of the most popular displays, such as the “12 Days of Christmas” have been updated. A peek at what’s new for spring By Pamela A. Keene Big plans are in the making for more improvements at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands in 2019, with a projected expenditure of another $10 million. “The Point of Indecision Marina will be expanded to include 500 in-the-water slips and dry storage,” said Darby Campbell, president of Safe Harbor Development LLC. “We’ll be moving the transient docks to make way for permanent slips.” Additionally, the company is building 160 new RV pads in the

campground. Campbell said that talks are under way to convert the giant snow mountain to a zorb ride in the warmer months. And he said he hopes that the attraction will offer activities for Halloween in 2019. “The idea is to create a year-round destination here,” he said. “We want people to come here any time of year.” As of late 2018, Safe Harbor Development has invested nearly $12 million in creating and branding Margaritaville at Lanier Islands.

Gwinnett to build world-class Water Innovation Center

From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene hen Gwinnett County opened the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center in 2001 to process the county’s wastewater, officials envisioned that it would become a model for wastewater treatment across the nation. Fast forward to 2018. Ground was broken last month at the 700-acre complex on what will become a destination for water-quality research, education and studies for businesses, municipalities and companies around the world. “It’s huge,” says Gwinnett Commissioner John Heard. “When we were working on the litigation with the Lake Lanier Association and others about discharges into Lake Lanier, we were able to reduce the amount of phosphate discharge to just 0.08 milligrams per liter. That’s among the best level anywhere in the country, except for a plant in New Jersey that matches us.” The maximum acceptable level of phosphorus/phosphates in water is 0.1 milligrams per liter, according to the Water Research Center based in Dallas, Pennsylvania. Phosphorus is known to cause algae blooms and accelerated aquatic plant growth that hinder the oxygenation of water

and harm fish and wildlife. The US Geological Survey, the science agency for the US Department of the Interior, has cited several cases in Georgia as examples of issues regarding phosphorus from point-source (water treatment plants) as contributing to excess phosphorus in area lakes and rivers. The USGS shows that the amount of phosphorus in the Chattahoochee River upstream of Atlanta, i.e., from Gwinnett and other sources, has historically been far less than from waste-water treatment plants downstream of Atlanta. The Wayne Hill Water Resources Center currently treats 35 million gallons per day of wastewater, including screening and dirt removal, primary clarification, biological nutrient removal ,secondary clarification, 0.045 micron membrane filtration and ozonation before the treated water is discharged into Lake Lanier not far from Buford Dam. Water from the plant can also be discharged into the Chattahoochee River. The center has become a model for other communities. “People from around the globe have come to the Wayne Hill Pant to see how we’re able to do what we do,” Heard says. “With that in mind, we in Gwinnett decided to

look at ways to incubate and start businesses around the technology of the Water Resources Center. that’s the idea behind our creation of a Water Innovation Center here.” Ground was broken in October for a $60 million facility to be built on the campus. Officials predict that the center will be one-ofa-kind in the nation. The county has partnered with a number of agencies, educational institutions and organizations to make the center a reality, including the Georgia Institute of Technology, The University of Georgia, Johns Hopkins University and the Lake Lanier Association. “Already we have 10 businesses interested in setting up incubators, new studies and lab work,” Heard said. “Our conservative estimate is that the center will create 5,000 jobs when it’s complete and create a campus of

water-related businesses that will attract world-wide attention.” Heard said taxpayers were not providing the funding. Instead, funds are coming from water and sewer use charges. In addition to the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center, the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center is located on the campus. It opened in 2006 and serves as a public gateway to the resources center and a focal point of education about the heritage and environment in Gwinnett County. “The goal is to tie in with the Gwinnett Environmental and Her-

itage Center, including providing education for youngsters through school programs and visits there as well,” Heard said. “But the Water Innovation Center will go way beyond that, looking at issues related to water treatment technology. For instance, water from the F. Wayne Hill Center will be piped into the center to analyze different stages of processing to continue to improve technology around water quality.” Tours of the center can be arranged through the Environmental Heritage Center by calling 770 904-3500.

By Pamela A. Keene Many people in Gwinnett County and surrounding areas know about the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center as a place where school-aged children take field trips to learn about water and how it has affected the history of Northeast Georgia, that is, IF they know about it at all. But it is so much more than an educational center. Opened in 2006 on a 700-acre wooded campus that is also home to the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center near I-985 near Ga. 20, the facility holds secrets to the forebears of the area as well as in-

teractive science and nature exhibits for all ages. The EHC, as it’s called by area officials and locals in the know, hosts public events throughout the year, including the upcoming Holiday Arts and Crafts Show on December 1. With arts and crafts vendors, family activities, breakfast with Santa and rides on the GEHC Holiday Express, it’s a chance for people to get to know a valued local resource. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge. “The EHC is an oasis of nature, right next to the Mall of

Georgia, and it has many activities and events to offer people of all ages,” said Jason West, manager of the facility. “As an educational, environmental, science and social studies showcase, it is a treasure in our community.” The EHC’s main hall highlights how water shaped Gwinnett from the time of the Native Americans to the development and operations of Lake Lanier. An adjacent exhibit room, Discover H2O, provides hands-on experiences that explain the workings of a wastewater treatment plant, show the affects of erosion on the

damage that looked like a tornado hit. The vortices I saw on the satellite did exactly what they did in Miami after Andrew, flattened everything. It was the 3rd CAT 4 hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in two years. In just a few hours, peoples’ lives were turned upside down. People that chose to stay say they will never do that again. Most thought they would lose their lives. If there was a bright spot, it was that Michael was a quick

mover and did not linger for days like Hurricane Florence did in the Carolinas. Rainfall was not a problem with Michael, it was the storm surge of up to 13 feet in some spots and those CAT 4 155 mph winds. Each hurricane or tropical system is unique with its own set of perils. It will all be over by the end of this month, when hurricane season ends.

Local Thanksgiving Day races burn holiday calories 34 LAKESIDE

By Jane Harrison A flock of turkey trots, gobble wobbles and “can” runs hatched around Lake Lanier about a decade ago, offspring of an Atlanta tradition. On Thanksgiving Day area runners and walkers hoping to burn some calories before they fill up don’t have far to drive to the starting line. Long-time running enthusiasts in Cumming, Gainesville, and nearby communities got tired of trekking south every year to run the Atlanta Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon, so they started races in their own backyards. They ditched the 5 a.m. alarm, MARTA train rides, long lines at porta-potties, and sleepy car trips back home for a closer, more family friendly holiday start. Ginny Crumley, co-owner of Georgia Front Runners, and a group of 15 friends ran Gainesville’s first Turkey Trot nine years ago. Instead of heading to Atlanta they took off from Gainesville’s Riverside Drive on a challenging loop course near home. “We made our own tshirts,” Crumley said. Eventually, Crumley’s t-shirt company would make Turkey

Trot shirts, jerseys, or hoodies for around 300 participants in three distances: 5K, 10K and halfmarathon. “People run (or walk) it as a family tradition. They do it together,” Crumley said. “They enjoy being together and go home to enjoy a turkey lunch.” Kim Hall, owner of Totally Running in Cumming, started the Tryptophan Thanksgiving Day races for the same reason: to avoid the holiday morning rush to Atlanta. Seven years ago, she organized the first race named for an amino acid prominent in turkey. Tryptophan is linked to promoting emotional well-being and sleep quality. The 5K, 10K and halfmarathon, all on the flat Big Creek Greenway, attract around 1,600 runners and walkers, mostly for the 5K. Hall said she had to cap the 5K at 900 participants. Last year about 250 ran the half-marathon. The 10K has room to grow. “The course is a nice out and back. There are a lot of PR’s (personal records),” Hall said. The tree-lined 12-feet wide greenway on concrete paths and board

walks offers a beautiful late fall route, she added. “It’s very family friendly … huge families come out and some dress up” in turkey hats, pilgrim attire, or movie costumes. “It’s a fun, family laidback event, but we do have some fast runners.” You don’t have to be a serious athlete to participate in either race, as neither has a cut off time. But, those with a competitive nature can run their heart out before they dig in to Thanksgiving dinner. For what it’s worth, as a general rule of thumb, the average person burns about 300 calories per 5K, double that for 10K, quadruple for half-marathon. The average American consumes around 3,0004,000 for Thanksgiving dinner. A holiday morning run or walk might at least burn as many calories as the pumpkin pie with whipped cream they’ll eat later.

Winter color? Try new Cool Wave Pansies and more

38 LAKESIDE

November 2018

A package arrived a couple of weeks ago from a public relations firm with a surprise – a dozen of the newest Cool Wave Pansies. As a garden writer I occasionally receive samples and trial plants with the stipulation that I report back to the growers about results in my Northeast Georgia garden. Wave plants had been on my radar, especially the beautiful Wave Petunias that are available at box retailers and area nurseries each spring, but the Cool Wave Pansies got past me as each fall I purchased four to five flats of pansies to line my front walkway for winter color. Over the past couple of winters, my regular pansies suffered from various setbacks, from deer munching on them to just not performing as well as I expected. Cool Wave Pansies, perfect for containers, window boxes and hanging baskets, are my new goto winter color. My 12 samples, mostly in shades of yellow, purple and white will replace my Kimberly ferns on my front porch as it gets cold. The ferns will be overwintered in the garage – watered regularly and brought outside for some sun on warmer days. In the meantime, the Cool

• EHC

November 2018 Continued from Page 26 area’s topography and how evaporation happens. The concept began to come to life in the mid-1990s, about the same time as the initial design of the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center. When it opened, the EHC was LEED-certified, recognized as a representation of sustainable design, construction and operation, including energy efficiency, water conservation and good use of resources. “It’s partnership among the Gwinnett Department of Water Resources, Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation and other agencies,” said Mark Patterson, deputy director for the Department of Community Services, which oversees the EHC. “It is becoming a world-class environmental education facility, especially because it ties into the Water Resource Center.” The building houses a laboratory and classrooms where students can learn about nature and the environment. Through a recent project, students studying “Keystone” species, those that form the foundation of wildlife in the area, built their own beaver dams. “Putting their hands in the

LAKESIDE 41

mud and sticks to construct a working dam makes the concept come to life, more than just reading a book about it,” West said. “As with all our public programs, experiences are hard to forget when they are memorable.” The center hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year who come for traveling exhibits, educational programs and family activities. Nearly 2,500 volunteers are involved annually.” Beyond educational programming, the campus has more than 10 miles of hiking, biking and walking trails and offers Tree Top Quest, an adventure course. Historic preservation is part of the mix as well. The historic 1800s Chesser-Williams House was moved from the Hog Mountain area to the campus. “Visitors can see the period’s architecture and learn about how people lived during those times,” Patterson said. According to its website the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center is a collaboration of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, Gwinnett County Public School System, the University of Georgia, and the Gwin-

nett Environmental and Heritage Center Foundation. The center’s exhibits were designed with input from Gwinnett County Public Schools to ensure that each exhibit’s content supports the requirements of the AKS (Academic Knowledge and Skills Curriculum) of the Gwinnett County K-12 School System and Georgia Standards of Excellence. Since opening in October 2006, the EHC expanded to work with schools – public, private and homeschool – as well as with summer camps, Boy/Girl Scouts, and daycare/preschool), with growth in its diverse exhibit programming (traveling, art, community, permanent, and juried exhibits), and growth in its rental/special event programming (business meetings, weddings, 5K races, and festivals). Plans over the next several years call for an ADA-accessible treehouse and other improvements to the facility. “People think that the EHC is just a place for school field trips, but it is so much more than that,” West said. “The biggest thing we’d like people to know is that the EHC is for everyone.”

Aligning your remodel dreams and your budget

November 2018

Budgets can be a sensitive subject when it comes to remodeling, but it’s one of, if not the most important conversation to have early in the process. Many homeowners that have a budget do not want to disclose their budget to a contractor up-front thinking that if they do, the contractor will automatically come back with an estimate equal to their budget no matter the scope of work. Even if you don’t want to disclose your exact budget, it’s important to at least provide your contractor or designer with a ballpark of what you’re looking to spend. This will help guide the design process and will let you know if you can afford everything you want or if your plans need some fine-tuning. More often though, I come across homeowners who don’t have enough experience with building or remodeling to know what they should expect to spend on a project. TV shows can be misleading because they rarely show you all the costs associated with the project and, often, materials have been donated for promotional purposes. Also, some shows are centered around “DIY” remodels where the homeowners

Design & Remodel

nMORE INFO: tracytesmerremodeling.com

provide most of the labor, so if you are looking for a turn-key renovation, you can expect to pay a considerable amount more than these shows. Another important consideration when looking at remodeling costs is location; material and labor costs vary greatly in different areas of the country. Lastly, the internet is a dangerous place to try to find out what you “should” spend on a remodel. There are a lot of opinions and calculations out there, but unfortunately, there are too many factors involved to go by a simplified equation. In determining if your budget and dreams are in-line, it’s impor-

tant to meet with an experienced professional as a first step. This initial consultation should not cost you anything and can give you some guidance as to what you can expect to spend on your remodel project. If the number is higher than you were expecting, then you still have the option to refine your design ideas and talk with your contractor or designer about areas to save. After the initial consultation, the next step is the creation of design plans. If you’re planning for a major remodel, as-built drawings will need to be created first. As-built plans are detailed drawings of the existing structure and floor plan. From there, your designer will create design plans for you based on your wants and needs. Make sure you discuss your must-haves with your architect or designer early so these can be incorporated into the designs. This will also allow your designer to suggest ways to save in other areas, if necessary. If you haven’t yet come up with ideas, don’t worry. Collaborate with your designer by looking on sites like Houzz or Pinterest and save those you like.

Once you’ve agreed upon the best plans, next comes pricing. If you’re working with a design-build firm, the design will be followed by an in-house estimate based on the approved plans. If you are working with an independent designer or architect, you will want to send plans to one or more general contractors to provide an estimate. Just be careful if you go this route; make sure you provide a consistent list of details to each contractor to make sure you are comparing apples-to-apples. If the pricing comes back in line with what you are willing to spend, then it’s on to a formal agreement and construction. If not, then it is time to revise your plans. Maybe you don’t want to modify that structural wall after all, or maybe you’re willing to look at other material options. Whatever the case, your designer or contractor should be willing to collaborate with you to make sure

you are happy with the final plans. Here’s the key: talk budgets early with your designer and contractor and be honest. This will guide everything from the design and scope of work to materials and construction. Let them know what you might be willing to negotiate on or if you are willing to do any of the work. Alternatively, make sure you are working with a contractor you trust. Working with a respectable contractor or designer, they will help guide you to what you can afford and come up with the best design solution for you in the end. Highlights of events sponsored by The Arts Council, Inc. and/or $ɤOLDWH $UWV 2UJDQL]DWLRQV

NOVEMBER 2018

November 8th through November 30th, The Arts Council Smithgall Arts Center has the honor of showcasing a variety of visual art created by Georgia Artists with Disabilities. Georgia Artists with DisAbilities, Inc. was founded by the Pilot Clubs of Metropolitan Atlanta in 1985, enabling disabled artists throughout Georgia with the opportunity to display and sell their original art, as well as being eligible to compete for awards. Based on the awards given, artists may also have the opportunity to have their artwork displayed in a statewide tour and exhibit. Many mediums of artwork are included in the show, such as pottery, painting, sculpture, wood carving, photography, metalsmithing, weaving, and others. As GAWD begins making plans for the future, it continue to focus on our theme from our very first year - ³Visions and Dreams, Tomorrowœs Reality.´ Our main goal over the years has been to identify those disabled citizens of Georgia who are creative, capable, and talented in the arts, so that their achievements and talents can be recognized. There are many disabled artists in Georgia who have visions and dreams, but have no way of making them a reality. GAWD helps make them a reality.

BEST OF SHOW: Fused Explosion by Amy Hunker From rheumatoid arthritis to schizophrenia to stroke, artists around Georgia are overcoming their mental and physical disabilities so they can show off their artistic skills. GAWD also helps create a platform for public awareness of the skills the artists have developed while overcoming the obstacles of their disabilities. This yearœs GAWD exhibition features 46 winning exhibits from more than 300 entries throughout Georgia. The pieces have been judged by a panel with artistic backgrounds. Each artist picks the price for their work of art, and while some choose to not sell at all, most of the pieces are for sale. Fall at Lake Lanier produces unforgettable panorama

50 LAKESIDE

Now is the time that the path of “Old Sol” begins sliding more toward the Southern Hemisphere and the days are becoming shorter. The sweltering heat of summer is subsiding and Lake Lanier is magically changing. It is a quieter, calmer lake during the fall season that allows birds, wildlife and fish to again appear in greater numbers. Kids are back in school, hunters have taken to the woods, football is again part of the weekly routine and the cooler, receding waters have many people putting their boats in storage until next spring. For folks who love the peace and quiet, enjoy the diverse flora and fauna or simply want to fish without huge boat wakes, the fall season is the best time of year! A couple of years ago I found a family of bald eagles in a remote section of the Chattahoochee River above Lake Lanier. Since that discovery, I have had the pleasure of seeing them and sharing their breath-taking presence on many occasions throughout the lake as their numbers continue to increase. Ospreys are also relative newcomers to much of Lanier, but these gorgeous birds of prey have become more prevalent in this part of Georgia since the stocking rates of striped bass were increased. Because ospreys are normally larger than hawks or falcons and have a white head, they are often mistaken for the bald eagle. Upon closer inspection, one can easily see that the osprey has a dark band across its face and a smaller, less colorful beak than his more well-known relative. Also, the osprey has white breast feathers while bald eagles are quite dark underneath. Probably the most unique part of an osprey is the rough textured feet that are perfect for grasping slippery prey. The osprey is the

only bird of prey that is able to grasp with two toes in front and two in back rather than the usual three and one toe arrangement. Ospreys often grab fish that are too big to carry, and they may not be able to let them go, which usually causes these birds to die prematurely. Some experts believe that the excitement of the catch stimulates a locking mechanism in the feet, while others surmise that the claws simply sink into bone and become stuck. Regardless of the reason, occasionally, fishermen catch large fish with osprey feet still attached. Nevertheless, ospreys that survive are magnificent birds that are fascinating to watch as they go about their daily task of catching and eating fish. So, if you are lucky enough to see one of these fabulous creatures floating on the wind currents above Lake Lanier this fall, watch for a few minutes. You might be in for a great show! As the nights begin to feel cool each fall, my seasonal love affair with a beautiful and mysterious visitor from the North begins again. Though I’ve certainly known more than my share of unique ladies in my time, this one can fly, dive, swim like a fish and has a haunting song that penetrates the morning fog on Lanier like the beam of a powerful

searchlight. I’m referring to one of the most fascinating birds in the world ... the common loon! Just a few years ago, loons suddenly appeared for the first time on Lanier’s blue-green waters. Loons are divers that are normally 24 to 40 inches in length and have an elongated body and sharp, pointed bills. They are strong swimmers that propel themselves when diving by using their radically webbed feet. Their legs are attached far back on their bodies, a characteristic that permits ease of movement when swimming, but causes great difficulty when attempting to walk on land. Loons are unique among living birds because their legs are encased within the body all the way to the ankle. They can actually out swim most fish. Loons are also good fliers but become airborne only after an extensive run along the top of the water. In keeping with their uniqueness, loons rarely live or feed in areas that have been polluted. These gorgeous creatures are also very family-oriented, and always mate for life. Often, we at Lanier are privileged to observe parts of their courtship, but they fly back to their homes in Canada, Alaska, or northern areas of our country before actually laying eggs. When most of the jet skis and mass humanity of summer have gone, and the cooler weather brings a quietness to the lake, it becomes an entirely different environment. Soon the sounds of loons, eagles, ospreys and other birds and waterfowl fill the fall air with a symphony of sound and natural beauty that again brings sanity to the beautiful waters of Lake Lanier!

On Lake Lanier - a boat cruising on the lake during a fall sunset; a young eagle; a wood duck reflection; a blue heron skims the fall shoreline; a deer in the woods; a loon makes an early arrival on the lake (clockwise from top).
