Special Master orders joint memorandum in water lawsuit
By Jane Harrison A court official ordered Georgia and Florida to get their act together to solve a long-running water dispute on the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river system. Special Master Paul J. Kelly, Jr., in his first substantive action in the case, ordered the parties to meet and confer by Sept. 18 and produce a joint memorandum by Oct. 2. Public record of their meeting was not available by deadline. The Supreme Court appointee wants the states to address five questions, including one about settlement exploration, in 40 pages or less to determine the future course of legal proceedings. The case originated in 2013 with Florida’s claims that Georgia siphons excess water from Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers and causes harms downstream on the Apalachicola, which nourishes Panhandle oyster fisheries and wildlife. Georgia and Lake Lanier stakeholders have kept watch on the lawsuit’s potential impact on the north Georgia lake. Lanier, the northernmost and largest reservoir on the river system, quenches much of metro Atlanta’s water needs and boosts the
economies of surrounding counties. Supreme Court justices remanded the case for further evaluation after ruling that the first special master, Ralph I. Lancaster, Jr., used too strict a standard for Florida to prove that limiting Georgia’s water use would ameliorate its woes. The court named Kelly the special master Aug. 9 in a move legal experts widely presume was to save the states’ money. Kelly, a senior U.S. appeals court judge, is on the federal payroll; Lancaster, a prominent Maine attorney, was privately employed. Kelly, reputed for straight-forwardness and prompt decisions, cut quickly to the issues in his September directive. He expects the states to summarize whether existing evidence can answer questions raised by justices in the June hearing. Kelly wants states to reply whether: • Additional discovery is needed, and if so, what specific issues it would address • It’s possible to produce stipulations about facts related to economic issues each state faces due to water concerns • Additional hearings would be beneficial
• Settlement possibilities have been and will be explored fully • The special master should address any other issues. Kelly ordered the states to submit “a joint memorandum to the extent possible, though it may contain independent statements where the parties are unable to agree to the summary.” He stated he would prepare a scheduling order after submission.
Kelly also invited the United States Justice Department, which represents the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to indicate by Oct. 2 whether “it can or intends to provide any further information that would bear on any of the issues.” The Corp, which controls five dams on the river system, was not included in Florida’s original lawsuit, and testified as amicus.
Safe boating course set for Oct. 20 Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Lanier, announces a one-day “About Boating Safely” course. The course is scheduled for Saturday, Oct.20, 2018. This course also serves as a PWC certified course for children under the age of 16. This course will be given at the Bunzi Operations Center, 6595 Lights Ferry Rd., Flowery Branch, Ga., on the left just before the entrance to Aqualand Marina. Classes run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and cost is $30. Discounts available for additional family members. Course contents include:
• Know your boat • Before getting underway • Navigating the waterways • Operating your vessel safely • Boating’s legal requirements • Boating emergencies • Enjoying watersports • State of Georgia regulations Any person born after January 1, 1998, must have completed a boater education course approved by the Ga. DNR before he or she june legally operate a motorized vessel on Georgia state waters. Successful completion of this course june result in a reduction in your boat’s insurance premium.

And it’s already time to register for the Christmas Parade of Boats, scheduled for Saturday, December 8. “We’ve added a new category this year – sailboats – and we’re encouraging people to register early,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, which organizes the Christmas fund-raiser every year. “It’s going to be another great year and we’re already getting excited about the parade.” This year there will be three categories – cruisers/powerboats, with a $75 per boat registration fee; sailboats, with a $100 per boat registration fee; and houseboats, with a $125 registration fee. Registration includes a courtesy slip, side space or mooring at Margaritaville for the evening, two long-sleeve souvenir T-shirts and a tour of Magical Nights of Lights. “Again, we’re encouraging people at each marina to participate,” Geib said. “We will choose first-, second-, and thirdplace winners for the best-decorated boat in each category from each marina, and the first-place fleet winners from each marina will compete for the grand prize at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands.” Boats will marshal at designated points near each marina and proceed down the lake to Landshark Landing at Margari-

Striper fishing Striper fishing is very good. Striper fishing is the best it has been all summer. Fish are suspended in the 25 to 40 foot range over the creek and river channels. This is primarily due to the lack of dissolved oxygen at the greater depths. There are still a few fish in the 80 foot range but it is very difficult to keep your Herring alive at depths below 35 feet. We are setting our down rods at 30 to 40 feet and changing our baits often. Pick up some medium shiners with your Herring in the morning and use them if you are getting short strikes on Herring. The majority of the short strikes have been the smaller Stripers at 30 to 40 foot level. The crowds at the Dam area; Baldridge, Shoal and Young Deer creeks; they have thinned out recently and the fish have scattered from Flat Creek to the Dam in the river channels and
will have to be very accurate! The best bite trending in recent days is probably the spoon bite, especially the Nichols Flutter spoons and the Hawg spoons. These baits are remarkably versatile, and right now are arguably the best bait going. Simply ease up to one of your favorite brush piles and cast this bait on either side of the brush and let it sink to the bottom, then rip it up off the bottom a couple of times and you can often pull a fish off of the brush to take the spoon. You may also want to try pulling right over the brush tops Bass fishing as well. Boating clubs, Marine Max hosts boating safety seminar
By Pamela A. Keene Atlanta’s Boating Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary joined forces in mid-September to present a consumer boating safety seminar at the Marine Max Buford store. More than a dozen people attended, coming from across northeast Georgia. Some were new boat owners; others wanted to update their knowledge of Rules of the Road, on-board safety and Lake Lanier. Bev and Jim Topa boated for years on a small lake in Indiana. They moved to Lake Lanier about 18 months ago to be near their grandchildren, but they waited until recently to buy a boat. They purchased a 22-foot Tahoe center console. “We both are comfortable boating on our small lake back home, but we really don’t know Lake Lanier,” said Bev. “That’s why we wanted to come to this seminar – to learn more about the lake, and to refresh what we know about boating safety.” The majority of participants were females; some were encouraged by their husbands to attend. But the group also included single women boat owners who wanted to overcome their concerns about

driving a boat, docking and being out on the water. One participant commented that he realized “there are a lot of people out there who just don’t know what they’re doing,” he said. “I don’t want to be one of those people.” The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Dave Fuller and Frank Taylor with Atlanta’s Boating Club shared the presentation duties, with plenty of hands-on activities and props. They demonstrated proper fitting techniques for life jackets, showed the various kinds
of personal flotation devices and safety equipment. Both clubs also provided information about their educational, social activities and volunteerism at the lake. Membership is open to the public. Pamela A. Keene In honor of Veterans Day, the Cherry Cherry Band brings its Neil Diamond Tribute to The Venue at Friendship Springs in Flowery Branch on Friday, November 9. Steve Kelly, who has been performing the singer’s music since 2005, and his 9-piece Cherry Cherry band perform across the country, from the Pacific Northwest to the Southeast, doing 75 to 100 shows a year in concert halls, benefits, corporate events, casinos, outdoor venues and private parties. “People just love his music, it’s classic,” Kelly said. “I’m always amazed the broad appeal of Neil’s music, and we always have three generations in our audiences – grandparents, parents and children.“ Kelly’s Cherry Cherry Band exactly replicates the charts sung by Diamond, with trumpet, horn and saxophone players, horn players, keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar, bass and percussion.

Community unifies for successful Dragon Boat World Championship By Jane Harrison The Lake Lanier community forged another international bond last month in a sport that demands unity, rhythm and spirit. Local hospitality, organizational prowess, and world-renowned facilities merged in the successful hosting of the International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championship Sept. 12-16. The event at Lake Lanier Olympic Park brought in more than 1,000 athletes and support staff from 11 countries at the first ICF Dragon Boat World Championship in the Americas. Tourism officials estimated visitors from around the world boosted the local economy by an estimated $3 million, filling hotels, stores and restaurants across GainesvilleHall County and into Gwinnett County. “I’m most proud of the way the community came together, from the volunteers to businesses
to the corporate sponsors,” said Robyn Lynch, LLOP Executive Director. She praised the organizing committee from GainesvilleHall ’96 for securing team accommodations, transportation, and meals and running races on time while beaming with Southern hospitality. German athletes toasting American craft beer at the opening ceremony expressed the widefelt sentiment of camaraderie and celebration. “This is great fun with nice people all coming together … it’s like a big party for all the countries,” said Sabine Winkler. Teammate Elke Sudholt concurred. When the grandstands erupted with joyous dancing to Elton John’s “Philadelphia Freedom,” played by a glitter-clad Craig A. By Jane Harrison The teams bringing the most athletes took top awards at the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships last month at LLOP. The 113-member Team USA edged out the German squad of 114 for the Nation’s Cup honoring the team with the most points. The Czech Republic, with the next highest number of athletes, 76, won bronze. Led by many local athletes associated with the Lake Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, the United States brought in the most medals with a total of 24. Germany was a close second with 23 medals, and the Czech Republic placed third, bringing in 20 medals. Teams with a large number of participants filled boats in a wide range of races covering 200, 500 and 2,000 meters. The top teams put paddles in the water in every category: men, women, and mixed in junior, senior and masters divisions. Team USA Coach Mike Blundetto and Southeast Regional Coach Jim O’Dell, who steered

About a quarter of Team USA members currently paddle or previously trained with Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. USA athletes took medals across the board, from junior to master’s 50+. The team collected 8 gold medals, 8 silver, and 8 bronze. Second place finisher Germany actually won more golds, 16, and achieved 5 silver and 2 bronze. The Czech Republic took 4 golds, 13 silvers, and 3 bronze. Team USA Master’s Coach Mas Nash said having the championship “in our own backyard” definitely helped. “In the ICF all the Worlds are usually so far away – Hungary, Milan, Poland, Russia. Because it’s in the U.S., it’s so convenient. We don’t have to travel so far … it’s wonderful.” Other teams and medal counts: Hungary 18, Canada 11, Italy 10, Philippines 9, Switzerland 3, France 2.

Lighthouses have always enthralled me. Starting with the Pharos of Alexandria, which was one of the wonders of the ancient world and guided ships safely into harbor for hundreds of years until it was finally toppled by an earthquake, up to modern times when they’ve been made obsolescent by Radar, GPS and SATNAV. I grew up literally in the shadow of the Twinlights of Navesink, which at 209 feet above sea level is the highest point on the Atlantic coast for 1,000 miles each way. (There are higher places inland, but they cannot be seen from the open ocean.) The Twinlights are composed of two towers set about 50 yards apart so as to form a “range,” i.e. when you line them up, you can plot a course directly thru the Verrazano Narrows channel and into New York harbor. From the top of either tower you can see the torch of the Statue of Liberty, which is also considered a lighthouse as her full name is “Liberty Enlightens the World.” As a 5-year-old I remember my father, who was friends with the lighthouse keeper, took me up into the South tower which had

the larger of the two lights. I recall seeing this gigantic array of glass lenses and thinking “Gee, this thing is so big, I could stand upright inside of it!” Several years ago I revisited the lighthouse museum where the lens is on display and you know, it’s still so big, I can still stand upright inside of it! A word about lighthouse lenses: They were developed by Fresnel, a French engineer in Napoleon’s army who was put in charge of the lighthouse service in the early 1800s. He assembled a series of lenses that would concentrate the beam of light horizontally instead of shining out in all directions, sort of like an early form of laser. The most powerful ones go up to 9,000,000,000 candle power and are called “First Class.” They include Boston Light, Fire Island Light, Barnegat
Light (which was designed by none other than Robert E Lee as a young engineering officer right out of West Point), Cape Hatteras Light and the Twinlights of Navesink. The beams of these lights were so powerful that they could be seen 22 miles out to sea, and were actually extinguished during WWII to keep German submarines from making accurate landfalls from 22 miles offshore. Each light has a unique phase, or time sequence when it alternates between lighted and dark. Some also have different colors or various combinations of colors, allowing seamen to tell which light they are looking at. This is usually accomplished by having the lens or combination of lenses rotate at a set speed. My favorite light is located atop the cliffs at Gay Head on the western end of Martha’s Vineyard Island, Mass. The place got its name hundreds of years ago because of the brilliantly colored clays in the cliffs, (I’m sure there is a group somewhere collecting signatures to have the name changed because it may offend someone.) This light has a rotating set of lenses that flash red, dark, white, dark, green, dark,

When you lay underneath it on the grass on a misty night, each beam of light looks like the malevolent gaze of some primordial monster scanning the sea looking for prey! Here on Lake Lanier we have our own beloved lighthouse at channel marker 5FB on the southern shore of Aqualand Marina. Many years ago I met a fellow whose family used to own Aqualand and he told me how the lighthouse came into being: When a small airplane crashed into the lake, he had the only barge big enough to carry a crane to pull it out of the water. When asked what he would charge for the job, he said nothing, he just thought it would be an interesting project. As he was chatting with the airplane owner he mentioned that his biggest problem were the waves that come rolling in from the “Atlanta Ocean” which, when the wind is out of the west, start building up in Cumming and by the time they reach Aqualand, they play havoc tossing the boats and docks around. The Corps of Engineers said he could build a breakwater but the cost was prohibitive. The plane owner hap-

He said “What you need is Haulbacks.” He then explained that a cement truck holds about nine cubic yards of concrete, and if a job only uses seven yards they have to haul the remainder back to the plant and dump it. Sometimes it is used to make the huge blocks you see as barriers during construction on highways, or various other things but most of the time the excess concrete is simply dumped. Recapping the storm that was Hurricane Florence This past July in Severe Weather Center 2, we were tracking day after day of torrential tropical showers and storms pretty much every afternoon. The rainfall rates per hour were astounding, sometimes 2-4 inches per hour. The reason we saw that kind of rain were twofold. First, it was July, our hottest and most humid month. Storms had a lot of “juice� to drop heavy rain. Second, the steering currents this summer were weaker than what I would consider typical for summer. I mentioned to my colleagues that I hoped we did not see any hurricanes move inland toward us or we could end up like Houston and Hurricane Harvey, where a nearly stalled storm dumped historic rainfall. Most of August remained fairly calm as the eastern Atlantic was concerned. The sea surface temperatures off the coast of Africa were downright chilly and not conducive to tropical storm development. All that changed around August 30th when a robust tropical wave moved off the west coast of Africa. Even with the cooler ocean temperatures, the wave began to wind up and soon we had tropical storm Florence with a lot of ocean to continue to grow. Grow it did. At one point the hurricane hunters estimated winds at just below Cat 5 strength, at 155 mph. We were dealing with a monster but where would it go? The initial American model, the GFS, showed it moving toward New England, maybe staying away from the U.S. mainland. The
European model, the ECMWF, had a different scenario. It had pegged Glenn the storm to hit the U.S. mainland, somewhere in Burns the Southeast. As Florence continLanier ued its trek west, models Outlook were showed it likely to remain a major hurricane and were coming into alignment as to where it might hit. The Carolinas were in its sights. Prior to landfall, when the storm was still hundreds of miles off the coast, I was watching it here in the Weather Center. Something was happening to the storm. It was becoming lopsided. Strong southwest winds were shearing the storm clouds. Florence could be weakening and indeed it was. The next advisory now predicted it would weaken into a Cat 2, still devastating, but far from Cat 4 devastation. As we all know, it hit near Wilmington as a Cat 1. The European model, prior to landfall, showed it moving inland near Wilmington and then taking a jog to the south toward South Carolina and maybe even impacting Georgia a little. The storm was now slowing to less than a 5 mph forward speed. At that point I knew North Carolina was going to be in trouble. It was not going to be from the wind, it would be from the water. Storm surge and astounding rainfall were going to be the major players. The prolonged inland surge of ocean water was not going to let the rainwater flow back into the ocean. The rain was predicted accurately; 20-30 inches over 2-3 days, as it

The year 2018 proved to be a devastating period of time for boating accidents throughout the country. The tragic events all caused by different factors, most connected by one common thread: not wearing a life jacket. Personal Flotation Devices, also known as PFDs, are the invention of genius. Evidence of their existence and use dates back many years to improvised apparatus, some made from hollow dried animal skins tied together to trap air inside used by Norwegian seafarers. The first flotation device sold at retail in the 1800s was constructed of cork providing even more buoyancy. Fast forward a few hundred years and there have been vast improvements in the technology ranging from thermal protective immersion suits to upside down looking versions of life jackets called U-Float. Mae West was a nickname that was bestowed to the lifesaving cover, referring to the Hollywood actress of movies and stage during WWII, by both sailors and aviators alike. INK children’s museum damaged by floods, seeks donations to reopen
By Pamela A. Keene Gainesville’s INK Children’s Museum suffered water damage from its sprinkler system when it was activated during a small fire in its pottery studio in early September. Clean-up is ongoing, and museum officials are seeking inkind and financial donations to reconstruct exhibits. “About half of the exhibits were damaged from the water, including the train and airplane exhibits,” said Mandy Volpe, executive director of the museum, who was interviewed at the end of September. “At this point, we’re still doing clean-up, but we know from the extent of the damage, that we will need in-kind and financial donations to make it possible for us to reopen.” INK, the brainchild of founder Sherri Hooper, was started in 2002, first occupying space in the First Methodist Church of Gainesville, which is now owned by the Arts Council. Group collects nearly 70 tons of trash during annual cleanup By Pamela A. Keene This is one of those statistics that challenge people’s thinking: This year’s Shore Sweep broke all records for the amount of trash collected in its 30th anniversary years, hauling off nearly 70 tons. “It’s getting pretty obvious that there’s more trash and the things we’re removing are bigger,” said Bonny Putney, who chairs the Lake Lanier Association’s Shore Sweep and has been involved with the lake clean-up for at least a couple of decades. “This year, some of our sites didn’t even shut down until 6:30 that night.” The event attracted a good number of volunteers at 11 collection points, including members of Atlanta’s Boating Club and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. School groups and scout troops also turned out to help. Russ Patrick is the new leader of The Tigers of White Oak Elementary School in Sugar Hill. He
and his son Jackson, 7 and a firstgrader at the school, showed up early at Big Creek Park, where Jackson got a surprise for his community service. The two found a pair of boogie boards on the beach within a few feet of each other. Jackson proudly carried one of the boards, while his dad carried the other, along with a bag of trash. “This is my first Shore Sweep,” Jackson said. “And look what I found – this boogie board is really in good shape. We can use it at the beach, the pool and the lake.” The other board was tattered and ended up in the discarded trash. Jack McClure, leader of Pack 1545 at White Oak Elementary, brought out 15- to 20 young scouts who piled onto the pontoon boat provided by Marine Max. Volunteers from the Lake Lanier Association manned the
tent with the T-shirts, which participants received when they returned with full trash bags. Most were Shore Sweep veterans, but new to Big Creek. Two new sponsors helped at Big Creek – Pootoon, a service that provides mobile pump-outs and head repairs, and Bin There Dump That, specializing in residential dumpster services. Bin There donated many of the dumpsters for the event. And Putney’s call-out for a skid-steer at Big Creek was answered by another new company on Lake Lanier. Bay-Assist, owned by brothers Kenneth and John Webb, brought its equipment to assist with moving large objects. “We just moved the business up here from St. Thomas,” said John. “In fact, we’re still waiting for the container with the majority of our equipment.” Based in Dahlonega, the company specializes in towing, salvage and other marine services. On a recent evening cruise on the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s Chota Princess II, marine artist Anne Brodie Hill took a photo of the sunset over Lake Lanier. “The colors and the way the sun was shining on the lake, it was perfect to paint,” she said. She decided to donate the original painting to the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper for its September Patrons’ Dinner, the group’s largest annual fund-raising event. Cooler weather gardening chores and tips lay groundwork for next season As the temperatures cool, it’s a great time for gardening. From “the best time to plant trees and shrubs” to just being able to work outdoors without the sweltering heat and humidity, get out your gardening tools, trimmers and gloves and lay the groundwork for a beautiful landscape next spring. Planting trees and shrubs Trees and shrubs go dormant in the fall and winter. That means you can install new landscape materials now. As the weather cools, the trees and shrubs will have a better chance of acclimating to their new locations. And while they will require regular watering, it’s much less stressful on them to plant them in the cooler seasons. The secrets to success include selecting the right location in terms of sunlight and space. “Research the mature size and light requirements of trees and shrubs as you’re choosing the site and make sure that you select the appropriate site,” says Suzanne Brosche, owner of Art of Stone Landscaping, based in Dahlonega. “Trees need to have room to grow without being crowded. Plus, if they’re planted too close together, they will slowly compete for the nutrients in the soil and it will affect their overall health.”

By Pamela A. Keene hile he may not be known by name, for the past 23 years, Robert Estrada has rescued stranded boaters on Lake Lanier. As one of the most successful inland waters’ licensee for TowBoatUS, Estrada has seen it all, from helping boaters who have run out of gas to working with local law enforcement on search and rescue missions when tragedy strikes. Back in 1993, Lanier Harbor Marina owner Barkley Geib hired Estrada to help around the marina. Little did either of them know that their plan to help boaters at Lanier Harbor would turn into a long-standing awardwinning business serving boaters on Lake Lanier. “Actually, Mike Burgamy from the Georgia Department of Resources suggested to me that we needed a towing service on Lake Lanier to help with boats that had broken down,” said Geib, who now manages the marina at Lanier Islands. “Robert and I talked – he was working with me at Lanier Harbor – and decided to offer towing. At that time, Scott Sears, who also worked with us at the time, worked on the marina management side with me. “Robert got his US Coast Guard Captain’s license and became the go-to guy in the towing business. In fact, in the beginning, we all got our captain’s licenses and took shifts.” They started with an 18-foot center-console Wellcraft and operated out of Lanier Harbor. Several years later, they applied to be a TowBoatUS licensee. “At first, I just thought we were going to help the marina’s tenants, but word got around that
we towed boats out of Lanier Harbor, and we started getting pretty busy,” Estrada said. “It has blossomed into a decent business.” Geib and Estrada knew each other from their days in the hospitality and restaurant business. When Geib purchased Lanier Harbor in the early 1990s, he soon hired Estrada to come to work with him. “Our operation was one of the first fresh-water TowBoatUS licensees in the country,” Estrada said. “From the beginning, it wasn’t a hobby for me; it was a fulltime business.” Over the years, he added boats and when Lanier Harbor closed, he began relationships with other marinas around the lake. Geib sold his share of the business to Estrada in 2008. Today, Lanier TowBoatUS operates five boats and has six captains, including Estrada, who work regular shifts and respond on-call as needed. Boats are based at Holiday Marina, Hideaway Bay, Sunrise Cove Marina and Port Royale, virtually covering the lake. Captains, all holding US Coast Guard Captains’ Licenses, include Rick Dieumegarde, Mike Cochran, Zack Baxter, Don Smith and Randy Kapalako. Dieumegarde has been with Estrada the longest, having joined him 15 years ago. “I love what we do,” Dieumegarde said. “With so many boaters on the lake, this service is definitely needed, and it’s my way of giving back to the community.” Dieumegarde said that when calls come in, the captains gather information from the caller, and

in some cases, are able to help over the phone. “If someone says they can’t get the boat to start, we get them to check to see if the boat is in gear or if the kill switch has been pulled. But we are always ready to come out and assist.” The captains are not mechanics. “We leave that to the experts,” he said. Dieumegarde cites the old adage when reflecting about his job. “Even if someone is broken down or needs our services, a bad day on the lake is better than a good day at the office,” he said. “We want people to be able to enjoy their time on the lake and do what we can to make that happen and make their day better.” He said that he and Estrada are more like brothers than boss-employee. “Robert is like the brother I never had,” he said. “He’s great to work for, because of his patience, his character and his demeanor. I really admire the way he treats people.” In addition to providing towing services, the Lanier TowBoatUS gives back to the lake community. It has been actively involved in the Lake Lanier Association’s Abandoned Boats and Derelict Docks program from the beginning of that initiative. It’s not unusual to see the bright-red TowBoatUS boats on site with Estrada or members of his team helping raise a boat from the lake or maneuver it to be put on a barge or trailer for removal. Christmas Parade of Lights. The Lake Lanier operation and Estrada have earned national recognitions, perhaps more than any other inland TowBoatUS operation. For more than 10 years, the organization has won the BoatUS Dispatchers Award. In 2016, it also received the prestigious Tower Award. “We also have sold the most BoatUS memberships of any other licensee for several years running,” Estrada said. “Even people who don’t own boats buy memberships because of all the benefits and information that BoatUS provides.” According to the BoatUS website, members can access more than 25 benefits and services, including marine insurance, on-thewater towing, on-the-road towing, boat loans, and free boating safety courses, plus savings on travel and at retail locations including West Marine. The organi-

zation offers boating tips, maintenance guides, its hurricane tracking center and the bi-monthly BoatUS Magazine with information for boaters of all levels, travel stories and how-tos for buying boats and accessories. For nearly eight years, Estrada has served on the BoatUS National Tow Advisory Council, working with boating, towing and marine industry representatives from across the county. Membership in BoatUS is $72 per year and includes towing and a number of boaters’ benefits. “It’s a real bargain, because if you use your other insurance, towing can cost upwards of several hundred dollars,” he said. If you’ve got an on-the-water boating problem, Lake Lanier’s TowBoatUS is available 24/7 to assist. But if you want to minimize boating issues, Robert Estrada of the Lake Lanier operation offers these tips: • Keep your battery maintained, putting it on trickle-charge if you’re not going to be using your boat often. Or bring it home to charge it there. • Perform maintenance on a schedule and maintain good written records for routine work, including oil changes and gear lubes. • Regularly check your impeller and change it out if it is worn. • Winterize water-related items, including your water heater, etc. • Turn off the water in your boat if you’re not using it regularly. • During the winter, check your boat in its slip every two to three weeks to ensure that mooring lines are secure. • If we have storms or strong winds, check the security of your boat. Safety first: When checking your boat in the winter, docks and decks can be slippery. Wear your PFD, take your phone with you and let someone know your plans.

ICF Vice-President Thomas Konietzko commended the “excellent preparations” for the world championship of a sport that inspires “a special lifestyle” of social interactions from diverse communities “learning to work with each other.” Former LLOP manager Morgan House, who submitted the winning bid to host the event about three years ago, said he was “excited and amazed” to see it happen. He said the new management and organizing committee took charge to bring it to fruition. Around 400 volunteers worked shifts directing cars, holding boats, delivering catered meals, transporting athletes, and performing other tasks. “It’s amazing … the outpouring of support from community groups,” said Kingsley Peeples, volunteer coordinator. “Churches, schools and businesses sent employees out. It’s a complete community effort.” Technical chairperson Doug Smith and his staff trolled the water and roamed the finish tower to ensure the races ran on sched-

ule and according to regulations. His crew consisted of volunteers like Cheryl Smith, assigned to train eyes on the starting line. Numerous local officials who honed regatta skills with the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club and Lake Lanier Rowing Club poured their expertise into running races practically every 10 minutes – with lunch breaks – for four days. Lynch said teams appreciated the promptness. “They said it was the first (world championship) to run on time. I credit the staff for that,” she said. She found the biggest challenge to be transporting teams who stayed all over Gainesville, from Motel 6 to Don Carter State Park, and in Gwinnett County. “We worked it out,” she said. Team USA won the Nation’s Cup after three days of blistering heat with highs in the upper 80s succumbed to cool rain sprinkles on the final day. The fierce competition on the water coupled with a festival-like atmosphere on the Olympic plaza, where food trucks served barbecue, burgers, salads, and icy desserts and beverage carts poured beer and wine.
The number of spectators, originally predicted to be several thousand, seemed a bit off. Some local attendees – including Richard Smith who happened to ride by on his motorcycle and nearby resident Julie Jensen – dropped in out of curiosity. On Thursday and Friday 3,000 local middle schoolers lit up the grandstands, courtesy of the Ivester Foundation. Gainesville Middle School Principal Misty Freeman said the school partnered with the University of North Georgia to develop a curriculum based on cultures, traditions, skills and physics of dragon boating. The sport dates back more than 2,000 years. The first participants were Chinese villagers who held races in the belief it would show worship to the dragon, a traditional symbol of water. Today the sport seats crews of either 10 or 20 paddling in unison to the beat of a drum in long boats outfitted with plastic dragon heads and tails. Lynch said that after a winter’s break, the next wave of competition will come to LLOP in March with a regional rowing regatta.

‘Aging in place’ adaptable design becomes more popular

As the population is aging, trends in remodeling and design are adapting. ‘Aging in Place’ design or adaptable design are becoming more and more popular and manufacturers are making products to accommodate. Currently, about 15 percent of the US population is age 65 and older, but that number is predicted to rise to 22 percent by 2050. Here in Hall County, the 65-plus population is predicted to outpace the national average and rise to 30 percent by 2030. We have been seeing many Active Adult or Assisted Living communities pop up in Hall County lately. The alternative, when feasible, is aging in place. Aging in place design is centered around the idea that a home can be built or modified to accommodate someone who is aging so that they can continue to live comfortably in their own home. This could be as simple as adding ramps and grab bars to more complicated changes like adding an elevator or remodeling a kitchen or bathroom to make it completely accessible for a wheelchair. Small changes can make a big difference when it comes to designing for aging in place. Things

A comfortable distance between cabinet areas or between cabinets and appliances is also a necessity, ideally 36-42 inches, or more if you are designing for wheelchair clearance and turnaround. Along the same lines, it’s important to round corners of countertops so there are no sharp edges to bump into, and you can also incorporate pull out countertops or cutting boards for work
space at a more comfortable height for someone in a wheelchair. Also, keeping the main sink close to the stove keeps the distance necessary to carry pots full of water as short as possible. Other things we recommend are counter-depth appliances, nonslip floors options, and good lighting. When it comes to aging in place design, it’s not just for seniors. It’s important for anyone to make sure their home is comfortable and functional. Your home environment should not be stressful or unsafe, but rather, relaxing and one of the best ways to make it that way is through better design. Baltic Revisited: Seventeen years after that tragic day 52 LAKESIDE
Editor’s note: Seventeen years ago, Lakeside’s Senior Reporter Pamela Keene filed a story about her experiences around the tragic events of September 11, 2001. For her, the events unfolded one-third of the way around the world, while she was cruising the Baltic Sea. On a German-registered ship, dealing with rough seas, a belowdecks cabin, typical Baltic cuisine, plus seasickness, she took photos of flags at half-staff in cities along the Baltic Coast, bunches of flowers piled at American-associated monuments and received kind words from strangers along the way. The ship was met by a brass band playing the “Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful” at ports including St. Petersburg, Russia, and Stockholm, Sweden. “I remember very little about the ports we visited after September 11 except for the bands, the flags at half-staff and the outpouring of sympathy from native people as we traveled,” she says. “We were all in shock, as was the rest of the world. On that day 17 years ago, I was on a cruise in the Baltic Sea with a small group of other Americans, just leaving Tallinn, Estonia, for an overnight cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia. We reached the ship from the day’s excursion just minutes after the second plane hit. For the rest of the trip, nothing much seemed to matter except being glued to televisions broadcasting the BBC’s version of the tragedy. Fast-forward to August 2018. My husband Rick and I were once again on a Baltic Cruise

with our friends Terri and Cal Andrews, who also live in Flowery Branch. What a difference 17 years makes. We booked passage on the Norwegian Breakaway, a modern, well-appointed cruise ship known for its cuisine and diverse onboard entertainment. Our balcony rooms on the 10th deck far exceeded my journey from 17 years ago on a German-based ship where my friend college friend Lynda Kirker from St. Augustine and I shared a very cramped below-decks windowless cabin for the week. My first trip with Norwegian proved to be a treat beyond my expectations. Although we traveled with nearly 4,000 passengers, the layout of the ship, the restaurants, the amenities from the pools to the show venues, created a feeling of being on a much more intimate voyage. Norwegian’s new “Free-style” dining has done away with timeassigned seating in the main dining rooms, allowing us the flexibility of accommodating show times and our returns from off-ship excursions. It’s evident that Norwegian knows its travelers; menus were heavily American-based, but several nights of themed dining added such treats as lobster, prime rib and seafood selections. We were also served food specialties from the ports we visited. With more than a dozen specialty dining choices, featuring Angus beef, Italian, a Brazilian steak house, French, sushi and even Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, guests could eat at a different dinner location every evening and never repeat their choices. Again, the food was excellent. The staterooms were roomy, the bathrooms offered good-sized showers, and our cabin steward

surprised us nightly with charming towel monkeys, seals and elephants, a trademark of cruising. The shows were first-class, from the complimentary “Burn the Floor” dance showcase and Broadway’s “Rock of Ages” to the Atrium Café & Bar and Syd Norman’s Pour House where the amazing house band played everything from Kansas to the Rolling Stones, Elton John to Grace Slick. We spent several evenings at Syd’s singing along at the tops of our lungs. For a very reasonable upcharge, we took in Cirque Dreams & Dinner Jungle Fantasy, seated stage-side for a surf-and-turf dinner, followed by extraordinary acrobatics and breath-taking costumes. The next day’s “news” delivered to our cabin tempted us with a full schedule of activities for all ages, plus details on shows, excursions, the upcoming port and promotional opportunities. As we began our trip in Copenhagen, arriving a full day before embarkment, we opted for a Hop-on Hop-Off bus and boat pass that included a 90-minute tour of the city by water and the chance to visit sites along the way at our leisure. Brochures help visitors make the most of the service. After boarding the ship, we traveled to the seaside town of Warnemunde, Germany, then on to Tallinn, visiting a Medieval

By far, the highlight of the trip was St. Petersburg, with two days in port experiencing Peter the Great’s creation of a world-class European city in Russia. We chose ship-sponsored excursions for an overview of St. Petersburg by water and land the first day. The excursion included The Church on the Spilled Blood, built to memorialize the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881. I was eager to see the interior on this trip, because we didn’t 17 years ago. I was nearly overwhelmed by the more than 23,000 square feet of intricate mosaics that covered the ceiling, the walls and floors. It is one of the largest collections of mosaics in Europe. Seventeen years ago, we entered the port at St. Petersburg on September 12 to the sounds of a brass band playing “America the Beautiful.” It’s one of the few memories I have of that trip 17 years ago, because after the tragedy of September 11, everything from that point forward was a blur. And, contrary to what we’d heard, rain was scant. In fact it only rained one morning, the day we visited Catherine’s Palace at the village of Tsarskoe Selo, about a 30-minute bus ride from St. Petersburg. Even then, the skies cleared with plenty of time to walk the beautifully manicured gardens and little palaces and enclosed pavilions that dotted the estate. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m. Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks. Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531. “In the great cities we see so little of the world, we drift into our own minority,” said W.B. Yeats. “In the little towns and villages there are no minorities; people are not numerous enough. You must see the world there where every man is himself a class; every hour carries its new challenge”... this is the feeling I had while visiting small town America in Gadsden, Ala. (www.greatergadsden.com). For a long period following the Civil War, Gadsden was Alabama’s second-most important center of commerce and industry behind the seaport of Mobile. During the span from 1970 to 1990, however, a financial decline occurred, many businesses closed and part of the population moved to other places. The downtown occupancy dwindled to 60 percent, but because of a local Main Street program, Gadsden has seen a rebirth and now boasts more than a 90 percent occupancy that is growing fast. Despite this renaissance that includes a multitude of new restaurants and other businesses that are appealing to both locals and tourists, the Gadsden area has retained its warm, friendly small town atmosphere. This is especially apparent during the many events and festivals that are held in and around the county. One of the most popular of these is First Friday, which draws thousands of people to the downtown area to see very rare and unique antique cars on display in the streets that are closed to vehicle traffic on the first Friday of each month from March to November. Other events including the Downtown Art Experience, the Third Thursday Concert Series and annual history and ghost walks draw crowds to the shopping district throughout the year, as does the Hadrin Center for Cultural Arts, located in an old department store in the heart of downtown. vitalization attracts visitors to its children’s museum, youth orchestra, dance conservatory and art exhibits. While visiting downtown Gadsden, I was fortunate enough to dine at the elegant Blu Chop House (www.bluchophouse.com) that boasts gourmet farm-to-table dining, inspired by seasonal produce from local suppliers. I also had the opportunity to sup at the unique Sugar Moon Restaurant (www.sugarmoon.me) which has four star quality food in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Also, the best place for a home-cooked breakfast is the Choice Restaurant (256-546-9055). Not far from downtown is one of the prettiest and most historical venues for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Noccalula Falls Park (www.noccalulafallspark.com) has a beautiful water fall that drops some 90 feet into the Black Creek Gorge that has caves with Indian carvings. Overlooking the famous falls is the statue of Indian Princess Noccalula who is said to have fallen to her death from the top of the falls over a departed lover. In the park are beautiful rocks and gardens with an array of shrubs and flowers that may be viewed from the park’s paved trail system or when riding the authentic Huntington miniature train. the animals in the Petting Zoo and learn about life in the past in the Pioneer Village. Other offerings in the park include picnic pavilions, souvenir shop and a children’s playground. Noccalula Falls Miniature Golf Course features beautiful landscaping with cascading waterfalls and natural rock formations. The campground has over 120 sites from primitive tent camping to RV sites with complete hookups. A swimming pool, laundry facility, picnic pavilions, playground and rental cabins are available. The campground sits along Black Creek Gorge and offers awesome views of the Falls, the gorge and the creek below. The Black Creek Trail is a 1.7 mile crushed stone path with beautiful scenery along the Black Creek Gorge as it works its way down from Noccalula Falls campground to Black Creek Road. The Trail starts at Noccalula Falls Wedding Chapel and allows over five miles of groomed, singletrack trails perfect for walking, running and mountain-biking. Golf is a big attraction in the Gadsden area with the challenging Twin Bridges Golf Club (www.twinbridgesgolf.com) right in downtown along the Coosa River. Golfers and nature enthusiasts alike delight in the natural beauty and diverse wildlife that are experienced on the golf course. Only about 20 minutes from downtown is one of the most picturesque golf courses in the Southeast at Silver Lakes, which is one of the courses on the Robert Trent Jones Trail (www.RTJgolf.com). This stunning landscape includes 36 holes of forests, wetlands, grasslands

and dramatic elevation changes at Silver Lakes. The Heartbreaker, Backbreaker, Mindbreaker and The Short course provide challenging and scenic varieties of holes to play. Fantastic fishing for largemouth bass and crappie in Neely Henry Lake on the Coosa River in downtown Gadsden (www.cityofgadsden.com) is another huge draw to the area. Many tournaments are held out of Coosa Landing on the east side of the river next to the Broad Street Bridge. They have parking for approximately 125 trucks/ boat trailers plus overflow parking if needed. The bait shop has refreshments, tackle, fishing licenses and restrooms. The absolute best place to stay in the Gadsden area is the Holiday Inn Express (256-691-0225) located just off exit 181 on I-59 and Highway 77 and near a variety of Gadsden attractions. They have the best service you will ever find in a lodging facility and
a full breakfast that will make you want to get up early everyday. Katrina is the morning server in the breakfast area, and she will keep you smiling the whole day! This is but a small portion of what ignited all of my senses during the whirlwind trip in and around the feeling of home in Gadsden. I was about a month too late for the Longest Yard Sale in the world during August (www.127yardsale.com), but like those before me, I know that a yearn to see and experience more of this part of hometown America will bring me back again and again! Is the grass greener in retirement? Ask Greg Wagner By Pamela A. Keene For more than 30 years, Greg Wagner worked side by side with King Green founder Charlie King. Together, they took the company, which started in King’s garage, to become a regional player in the world of lawn care and pest control. The two met as co-workers in the mid-1980s, when both worked for TruGreen. “Charlie was the branch manager and he needed a sales manager, so he hired me,” Wagner said. “I moved to Atlanta from Birmingham, fresh out of college, to work for Charlie and TruGreen.” A couple of years later, when King decided to start his own business, he looked to Wagner and hired him to work at King Green. “I was ready to get out of the corporate world, so it was the perfect time,” Wagner said. “I became his partner and together we just blew the business out of the water. King Green is truly a family business.” King Green opened several divisions in Georgia and the Carolinas. “We became a great employer with between 110-115 employees in three business,”
Wagner said. “Early on, we found out that if we take care of our employees, they’ll take care of our customers. That still holds true today.” Wagner credits King with his vision for the company. “He was really able to build something beyond a mom and pop, providing careers, not just jobs, for our employees, and I’ll always be proud of that.” Personally, Wagner says he’s right where he wants to be. “I was hoping to retire at age 55, but I’m now 57, so I just barely missed it.” Wagner and his wife Michele have two children, Carmen, who plays soccer at Davidson University in Charlotte, and Nick, who attends Colorado School of Mines. Michele is a marketing executive in the power industry. “Michele and I are looking forward to doing more traveling and enjoying life.” Wagner is also an avid golfer and volunteers in the community. These days, Charlie King is semi-retired, too, but he’s not letting Wagner completely leave the business. “One of my favorite things working with King Green
was being out with customers,” Wagner says. “And these days, Charlie and I do a lot of going out and looking at lawns. It’s what King Green is all about.” Today, King Green operates seven locations – Gainesville, Norcross, Marietta, McDonough, Peachtree City and Watkinsville, Ga. and one location in Charlotte, N.C.
