A BEAUTIFUL BACKGROUND
INSIDE THIS ISSUE Lake economy mixed As Lake Lanier brimmed at its highest summer level ever, one might expect a booming lake economy buoyed by high waters. Five top excuses not to wear a life jacket For a number of years the events surrounding the promotion of National Safe Boating Week (observed in May of each year) have stressed the wearing of life jackets by recreational boaters at all times while under way. Consider for a moment the reasoning behind that strategy. According to Coast Guard boating accident statistics for 2011, there were 533 drownings in the U.S., and 84 percent (415) were not wearing a life jacket. The great majority of time, when boating accidents occur, entry into the water is unexpected, providing no time to grab a life jacket. If we have an individual in the water with perhaps a head injury or some other type of injury, that makes it difficult to swim, even if they knew how. Here are more sobering facts about life jacket wear according to the Coast Guard Life Jacket Wear Rate Observation Study done in 2012: • Adults in open motorboats – 5 percent were wearing a life jacket • All boaters excluding PWC boaters- 18 percent were wearing a life jacket • Youthful boaters (17 and younger) – 67.5 percent were wearing a life jacket.

Tie on a tube bait when fishing for bass or panfish Whether you fish for bass or panfish, tube type lures should have a place in your tackle system. While they don’t look like much, these subtle plastics tempt fish in both easy and tough times. They’re great when fish are aggressive and can salvage the day when fish are in a finicky mood. As the name implies, these hollow bodied soft plastics resemble tubes with multi strand tails. All the big names in plastic baits include tubes in their lineup. This lure style originated in the Western U.S. where inspiration for most of our finesse tactics took place. For quite a few years, the hollow bodied baits had a very low profile cult following among successful tournament fishermen. The first tube to get national renown among bass fishermen was the Gitzit produced by master tube bait angler Bobby Garland. For years many bass anglers referred to any lure in this category as a Gitzit. Top anglers were winning tournaments by sight fishing bedding bass with tubes. It’s a highly effective, although somewhat controversial technique. For a lengthy period of time, most folks thought that was the only method for this bait. However,
Tommy Wilkinson Casting Lanier
some very high profile anglers were quietly doing other things with tubes and bringing home the cash. The big secret became widespread knowledge among bass fishermen when Denny Brauer won a Bassmaster Classic by flipping plastic tubes into shallow cover with heavy baitcasting tackle. Of course, the publicity resulting from this changed the world of tubes forever. Rig up with a floating tube The simple tube bait was now on to the radar screen of the average weekend and club tournament bass angler. They purchased tubes like never before and not surprisingly caught lots of fish. Yet, even today, there are still a number of anglers who have not tried or developed confidence in these baits. If you’re among this group, or just want to catch a lot of bass, try a floating tube. It’s really just an-
other Carolina rig. I am convinced that in our local reservoirs, spinning tackle with eight-pound test line is the best presentation tool. Slide a long bodied 3/16th ounce finesse weight up the line about two and a half feet pegging it in place with a rubber T stop. If you don’t have finesse weights, simply use a bullet sinker and barrel swivel to create a leader. On the terminal end, tie a 1/0 or 2/0 extra wide gap hook. The exact size will depend on the brand. Check hooks against tubes when you shop. A 3.5 inch tube works best; avoid flipping tubes because these have more body weight. From a chunk of high floating foam material, cut out a piece around 1.5 inches long about the size and shape of a pencil. Insert this all the way into the hollow tube body. If any protrudes into the tail section, trim to fit inside the main part. Now just rig the bait Texas style and cast to the seasonally appropriate depth range. Note: When you pierce the nose of the bait with the hook, be sure to go through the foam as well. This is a great way to prevent the tube from sliding down the hook. When it comes to color, an earth tone dressed up with
chartreuse dye marker on the tail is a hard combination to beat. This floating Carolina rig is an especially deadly technique in the spring. During pre spawn through post spawn phases it will put a lot of bass in the boat. Try it any time your target zone is 25 feet or shallower anywhere you fish. On the deeper end of this range, it can pay off to increase the weight size for better bottom contact. If this has you wondering about the secret floating foam material, buy one of the “noodle” pool toys for three or four dollars and you’ll be set for life. Heck, just trim a few inches off the end and give the rest to the kids. I have two or three different colors pre cut in my tackle box just for this technique. I like something that sort of goes with the plastic color using a basic light or dark rule of thumb. This is a crazy rig; while you drag it slowly along the bottom, the tube floats high. Every time you move the rod tip it dips, darts, and rises with an eerie natural motion. An entire paragraph on this rig should tell you something: it’s one of my favorite fish catchers. Flippin’ for tubes In shallow areas with stained
water and wood cover, flipping tubes can produce a tournament winning catch. They offer a great alternative for bass that have seen too many jigs. Leave your spinning outfit with eight pound line in the rod locker. For this technique, break out the heavier action rods and 20-pound test line. Flipping tubes are generally a bit longer and bulkier than standard models. They should sport solid heads to keep the bait from sliding down the hook shank. Most anglers rig these Texas style with a bullet sinker pegged snug on the head of the lure. Weights typically start at one quarter ounce. Three eighths is a good all around choice. The specialized techniques of pitching and flipping would require an entire article to do them justice. These are short range presentations launching the bait low and parallel to the surface of the water resulting in almost no splash commotion upon entry. The third basic method of fishing tubes is the casting technique allowing it to swim and fall naturally. This is another finesse technique where spinning tackle and eight-pound test line get the nod. Continued from Page 10 use internal weights made just for tubes. Some of these weights even have built in rattles adding another important dimension. These typically range from 1/16th to 1/8th ounce and slide up into the head of the plastic body. Another superior option is the Woo Daves XPS Tube Weight. Woo is a long time professional veteran and Bassmaster Classic champion who knows tube fishing inside and out. This slide in weight is a mix of plastic and super heavy tungsten powder that can easily be trimmed for the perfect slow or faster fall rate. Don’t forget the panfish When fishing tubes with spinning tackle, which is most of the time, I use medium action spinning rod six to seven feet in length. I will typically spool up with green line. Having seen all colors demonstrated in giant aquariums, I’m convinced (rightly or wrongly) that green is the least visible color. If you’re flipping tubes and watching your line for strikes, switch gear and go for a clear blue fluorescent color. This will stand out above water while disappearing beneath. As far as color goes, when fishing the floating Carolina rig and flipping, I go for melon pepper, green pumpkin, and other dark colors. When casting around docks and swimming tubes I like lighter pearl and
gray or black combinations which resemble baitfish. When rigging one of these two tone colors, make sure the darker color rides on top. All real baitfish have that look for survival reasons. If you also like to catch crappie and bream, minitubes are great. I would go so far as to say that these are a must have for spring crappie fishing. Rig these with readily available 1/32nd to 1/16th ounce lead head hooks. Anglers cast around brush and especially docks simply letting them fall with concentration for light strikes. Since the water surface nearly always has some degree of motion, suspend a mini tube below a bobber and retrieve slowly with long pauses around any visible cover when the crappie spawn takes place. It’s a great way to fill the cooler. In closing, if you have not given tube type lures a serious try, it’s time to experiment with techniques that are new to your game. Rig up with one of these versatile lures but make sure you have enough to share. Your partner will probably want to “borrow” one or two. Take care and be safe on the lake! Tommy Wilkinson is a veteran of the fishing industry and resides in Jefferson, GA.

Elevation: 1073.4 or almost two and a half feet above full pool. This is a true anomaly for this time of year. Less rainfall over the next week may take it down near full pool of 1071. Surface temp: Upper 70s which is a bit cooler than normal for early September. Clarity: Clear in main lake areas with color in upper creeks from steady rain events. Right now bass fishing is fair on the better days. Anglers are having a tough time finding concentrations of fish and catching them consistently in the same areas. It seems that the bass are scattered, moving, or both. There is some speculation on whether a high lake level and slightly cooler water temperatures are contributing factors. Most spotted bass are still coming off deep cover on pronounced structure. Keep your efforts on the brush piles at depths of 25 feet or so. When you find the brush, you’ll nearly always be on a piece of decent structure such as a submerged hump or point. Drop shot rigs and jigs presented in and adjacent to the brush are putting fish in the boat. Live spot tail shiners dropped in these areas can be the cure for a slow day. I’ve also heard that there’s a good sleeper bite for largemouth bass in very shallow cover. Look for areas in upper creeks with color to the water. If you explore this, you may want to toss a buzzbait early in the day and switch to plastics later in the morning. A smaller topwater plug in these pocket and cove shallows could be a good pick if the skies are overcast. This could be a very fun way to spend the day on the lake. Striper fishing has also been fair but pretty consistent. The main areas of action have been the creek mouths. Anglers are picking off linesides by dropping baits on down rods. Target depth is 30 feet plus or minus over bottom depths of 80 to 100 feet plus. Begin your search over any tapering points or submerged humps near the old creek channel. Be sure to switch your baits out often as lively herring are a key to action. No reports on lead core trolling. If you break out the lead core rods, go for eight to nine colors of line as a rule of thumb and rig a one and a half ounce bucktail jig and trailer combo or plastic shad body jig on a 20foot leader behind the main line. Remember that just because no one is talking about it does not mean it won’t put fish in your boat!

Governor to speak at state park dedication By Jane Harrison Gov. Nathan Deal will speak at the public dedication ceremony for the new Don Carter State Park on Lake Lanier Sept. 16. The park’s namesake is also expected to attend the event at the 1,316 acre park that opened in July. The governor is scheduled to speak at the 11 a.m. dedication. Guests are invited to enjoy the park’s beach, boat ramps, playground and trails afterward. The normal $5 parking fee will be waived that day. The park at 5000 N. Browning Bridge Road in northern Hall County is Georgia’s first state park on the lake. Its centerpiece is a wide sandy beach and grassy lawn along a cove on the Chattahoochee River. Boat ramps, a fish cleaning station, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, 1.5 mile paved trail and 2-mile wooded trail are among its amenities. The park is named in honor of Don Carter, the longest serving member (29 years) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources board. During his tenure the Gainesville real estate executive helped the state acquire more than 290,000 acres for public use.

Lake Lanier Sailing Community for 15 or so years. The Special Olympics Regatta began when she approached Southern Sailing Club and the group decided to host a fund-raising event each fall to benefit Special Olympics. “Through my involvement in sailing on Lanier, I’ve made many friends and become thoroughly ingrained in the sailing community,” she said. “It’s been a total blast, plus it’s so rewarding to see these sailors give of their time, energy and enthusiasm to support Special Olympics Georgia. “It’s also really great to see the lake levels up this year at full
pool and so many people enjoying the lake this summer,” she said. “This is the only fund-raising sailing regatta on the lake that I know of, and it’s fabulous to see so many people giving back to help our Special Olympians follow their dreams.” This year’s sponsors include Allconnect, Gold level; Rooms to Go Children’s Fund, Bronze level; Troncalli, Host level; and BVI Yacht Charters, Friend level. LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Second stage, more food set for Dragon Boat 2013 By Jane Harrison The 17th Annual Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival is expected to be the biggest yet with more entertainment and food than ever before. A side stage offering continuous performances throughout the day and new food trucks loaded with tasty morsels are planned for the Sept. 14 festival at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. The extra fun and food on and around the Olympic Venue Plaza add to the excitement rising from the water where a capacity 72 teams are expected to race. Known as one of the biggest events on Lake Lanier, the event attracts an estimated 5,000 people in the annual celebration of cultural diversity, competition, and camaraderie. “We’re adding a stage this year so that while racing is going on there will be performances throughout the day,” said Jackson Chang, President of Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival Inc. More food vendors will be setting up too, offering a “Taste of Asia” with cuisine from China, Vietnam, Laos, Japan, and Thailand. With a nod to the Southeast (USA), Chang said funnel cakes will also be frying. “It’s going to be more of a festival this year,” said David Haack, President of the Lake Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. The local club runs the races on water while the festival branch of the Atlanta Hong Kong Information Center sets up activities on land. “It’s one of the most fun events we have each year,” Haack said. Asian song, dance and martial arts performances have traditionally taken center stage during the midday opening ceremony, known as Dotting the Eye of the Dragon. The ceremonial dragon dance and showcase of Asian talent is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. in the lakeside awards circle in front of the plaza. The additional stage with continuous acts will be set up on the side facing the parking lot. Chang is especially excited about a couple of new acts. The Taiwanese Drum Team will hammer

out beats resounding from the 3,000 year history of the art form. “They’re really cool,” Chang said. A Lion Dance troupe from Atlanta will bring its award winning show to the Gainesville stage. At least a couple of food trucks from the metro area are expected to drive up. The Healthy Nut, serving sandwiches, salads and smoothies, and Phoshow, dishing up Vietnamese cuisine, will wheel in among the traditional favorites offering fresh crushed sugar cane juice, egg rolls, fried rice, and that other fried fest fare sprinkled with powdered sugar. When they’re not roaming the plaza stuffing their plates and clapping to drum beats, spectators might look to the water for some fierce competition in 39-foot dragon boats. Teams from corporate, collegiate, club, and charitable organizations will race down the Olympic channel in colorful vessels fitted with fiberglass dragon heads and tails. AT&T, AJC International, and The Home Depot are among corporations sending race crews. Dragon boaters from the University of North Georgia will be newcomers taking on collegiate crews from Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, and Kennesaw State University, among others. Several teams of breast cancer survivors also compete. The event is rooted in Chinese history. Traditional dragon boat races trace back 2,000 years to a Chinese legend that commemorates a much-loved poet who was banished from the main land and later drowned. Dragon boat festivals are among Hong Kong’s most popular events and have developed an international following through competitions worldwide.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE NEWS (CONTINUED)
Governments await Gainesville- Taste of Gainesville tickets will be available online By Jane Harrison Hall ’96 agreement, budget Tickets to the annual Taste of Gainesville and Hall County governments await a formal agreement and budget from Gainesville-Hall ’96 before releasing funds allotted for improvements at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. The city and county approved fiscal year 2014 budgets that designated a total of $300,000 to GH ’96 to use at the aging Olympic facility. GH ’96, the non-profit
group that originally brought flatwater canoe/kayak and rowing to Lake Lanier in the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, recently reorganized to oversee upgrades. Last month it elected officers: Mimi Collins, chair; Phil Sutton, vice-chair; Darla Eden, treasurer; and Stacy Dickson, secretary. The board is slated to meet again Sept. 20, according to secretary Dickson.
LCKC athletes medal in Nationals By Jane Harrison Eight Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club athletes medaled in the USACK Sprint National Championship last month to help the local club to a second place finish. LCKC has won the championship 10 times, but slipped to third in 2012. Coach Claudiu Cuir said his team was in it to win back the top spot, but could not muster enough points to beat the Gig Harbor racing team. LCKC achieved the silver trophy with 382.5 points, behind the racers from Washington with 473.5 points. The Aug. 8-11 championship in Oklahoma City attracted the best flatwater paddlers across the country. LCKC paddlers Chris Miller and Stanton Collins teamed up to win the senior men’s double kayak (K2) 200 meter title in 36.77 seconds. Miller took the silver in men’s K1 200, missing gold by less than a second. LCKC canoeists dominated all
distances in their discipline. Rob Finlayson and Ian Ross finished first and second the K1 200 duel and partnered to win the K2 200 event. Both were set to compete in the World Championship in Duisburg, Germany later in the month. Ross, Finlayson, and Ben Hefner finished 1-2-3 in men’s C1 500. Ross commented after his first race that “everything is coming into place and it’s going well” as the World Championship approached. Finlayson expressed his appreciation for LCKC’s role in his development as a world class athlete. “I love representing Lanier. I’ve been racing for this club for a real long time, ever since I was 14 and I’m almost 25 now. So it feels good,” he said. International Festival downtown to celebrate dragon boaters By Jane Harrison The spirit of the dragon will liven up the Gainesville Downtown Square on the eve of the Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival. An International Festival with music, dancing, and a pep rally for the dragon boaters is set for 6:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 13. The second annual Gainesville kick-off before the big culture fest on the lake is expected to bring thousands of fun seekers downtown for free entertainment. Fest goers can try belly dancing to the beat of
Alchemy Drumming & Dance and swing to rousing jazz, soul and R&B renditions of vocalist Monica Spears. Folks are invited to bring a picnic or dine at downtown restaurants. The International Festival caps off a day of home-grown activity, following the Gainesville Farmers’ Market, which gets under way at 2:30 p.m. “We’ll be moving and grooving until 10 o’clock,” said Gainesville Tourism & Trade Manager Deb Gregson.
Gainesville dining event will be available online beginning Sept. 10 on the Lake Lanier Rowing Club website: www.lakelanierrowing.org. Reservations for the Oct. 5 dinner outing at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue Plaza cost $25 for individuals, $45 table of 8, $50 table of 10. Individuals pay $30 at the gate. Children age 12 and under are admitted free. This year’s traditional feast of local fare is set a week later than usual. “We decided not to go against (the University of) Georgia at home,” said organizer Ann Marie Hynes, referring to Bulldog games in Athens the last two Saturdays in September. She said the club expects at least 35 to 40 area restaurants will dish up their specialties on the plaza. Taste of Gainesville’s favorite troubadour, Walter Beale, will serenade diners along with his band, Chattahoochee Carnivores.
Enjoying 2012’s Taste of Gainesville.
The al fresco dining and entertainment combo has been compared to the atmosphere at Atlanta’s Chastain Park, where concert patrons set up classy candlelit picnics and dine under the stars. No need to bring any food, candles or a vase of flowers to the Gainesville event. LLRC has that
covered … plus they’ll have your table covered, too, in white. Hundreds of hungry diners flock to the lakeside tables each year to sample cuisine from metro Atlanta and north Georgia. Restaurateurs say the event introduces customers to their menus and brings them to their doors for more.
Olympic gold medalist hosts swim event on Lake Lanier By Jane Harrison Eric Shanteau’s connections to Lake Lanier run deep. On Sept. 21, the Olympic swimming gold medalist will return to the shores Shanteau of his childhood with Olympic teammates and about a thousand swimmers for a day of open water swimming. The former Parkview High School standout and unbeaten Auburn Tiger is bringing his Swim For Your Life fundraiser for cancer patients back to Lanier for a fourth time. After successful events that have attracted swimmers from all over the Southeast, Shanteau set a participant limit of 1,000 for the open water swim competition and swim clinics with Olympic swimmers. The competition grew from 75 its initial year to 700 last year. The breaststroke swimmer on the 2012 U.S. 4x100 gold medal relay team in the London Olympics said his own personal story links fighting cancer with the lake. “It’s where I grew up. We had a lake house on Lake Lanier about five minutes by boat from Lake Lanier Islands. After my dad (Rick) lost his battle with cancer, his ashes were spread on
Lake Lanier,” he said. The 29 year old, who retired from Olympic swimming after 2012, will be celebrating his own recovery from cancer when he comes back to Lanier. In 2008, Shanteau was diagnosed with testicular cancer just a week before he qualified for the Beijing Olympics. After consultation with the Lance Armstrong Foundation, he decided to delay treatment so he could race in the Olympics. Less than a week after returning from Beijing, where he swam his personal best 200 meter breaststroke but missed qualifying for the final, he underwent surgery and was declared cancer free on Sept. 15, 2008. He went on to enter the global fight against cancer as an envoy with the Livestrong foundation. He returned to the pool, became a world champion and broke his

own World and American records. He founded the Swim For Your Life Challenge on Lake Lanier in 2010, two years before achieving his Olympic medal. Shanteau will mark a personal milestone with this month’s event. “It’s my five year anniversary of being cancer free,” he said. He traditionally sets the event around mid-September to coincide with that declaration from his doctors. He said although he has been asked to host the event in other parts of the country, he has chosen only to do it on Lanier. His own closeness to the North Georgia lake and time restraints limit him from expanding the challenge. “It’s a lot of work for myself, teammates and support staff,” he said. Besides his Livestrong work, Shanteau is employed by Boston Scientific helping patients with cardiac rhythm management. On his event website, Shanteau said he started Swim for Your Life “based on the idea that no matter what obstacle a person faces, they can still live the life they have dreamed about.” Participants will race alongside some of the best swimmers in the world and get training tips from swimmers who have fulfilled Olympic dreams. Legendary schooner, crew has been lost at sea A fabled (L.W.L.) schooner “Ñina” that had won many races for current owner David Dyche and previous owners, including the Commodore of the New York Yacht Club has apparently been lost in the Tasman Sea, with all aboard. The schooner was 85 years old, but marine surveys judged her seaworthy. The owner with family and friends was doing a slow circumnavigation of the globe. They had originally planned the Tasman Sea crossing from Opua in the Bay of Islands on New Zealand’s North Island to Newcastle, Australia in January, but the installation of a new auxiliary engine held them up until May, which down under is the winter storm season. They departed on May 29 and was last heard from on June 4th and indicated they had experienced one of the first winter lows with 26 foot seas and 50 knot winds gusting to 70 knots. On June 12th when the yacht had not been heard from, a search was started and covered over 737,000 square nautical miles, about eight times the size of New Zealand. The yacht was equipped with a manually activated EPIRB and spot beacon, a satellite phone and parachute flares. The absence of a distress call suggests Nina sank in a catastrophic event. Lost were Dyche, his wife, and son who was to go to college after the trip. Five others were aboard. The yacht just disappeared with no trace at all. No debris was ever found. Solo circumnavigation non-stop Seventy-six-year-old Stanley Paris will be attempting a solo non-stop circle of the globe in November. The Kiwi Mariner seems well prepared, with his boat “Kiwi Spirit.” He took his idea to fellow Kiwi Bruce Farr, a renowned naval architect. Together they designed the 63’ “Kiwi Spirit,” a fast and very macho sloop. She reportedly hit 27 knots on one leg of her delivery. The boat was built by LymanMorste in Thomaston, Maine. Both Farr and Paris are Kiwis, and in Kiwi jargon those who rise above the rest are called “tall poppies.” That’s how Farr refers to Paris. Paris might be 76 years old, but he’s led an athletic life with one trip around the globe, many long distance sailing races, and swam the English Channel three times. He defines luck “When preparedness meets opportunity.” He will sail from his home port of St. Augustine, FL and sail to Bermuda in November. The

clock will start when he leaves Bermuda. He plans on the trip taking 120 days. If you want to follow him, go to www.stanleyparis.com. We wish him fair winds and following seas. Solar generator “Goal Zero Yeti” portable solar generators are now available. No more noise or smelly fumes. The Yeti 150 weighs 12 pounds and packs enough punch to provide 50 hours of light, 15 smart phone charges, six tablet charges or two laptop charges. M.S.R.P. for the 150 is $199.99 and the 400 is $459.99. Solar panels are sold separately. The unit can also be charged by a wall socket. Contact Goal Zero, Bluffdale, Utah. Phone 888-794-6250 or www.goalzero.com. Center console boats Center consoles originally came on the market in the late ’60s with outboard power. Most were 22’ to 28’ in length; strictly a man’s boat; no head. The selfbailing cockpit boats then added fish boxes, live wells and wash downs. Then along came the rocket launchers (rod holders) in the aft section of Bimini tops. I always wondered how many fishermen forgot about those rods and went under a low bridge? Oops! While all this development was going on, the straight inboard powered center console was introduced. I entered boat building at that time with a 24’ center console powered by a 427 c.i., 325 h.p. Mercruiser Blue Water. It was a fast no frills fishing boat appropriately called “Fishmaster 24.” We built quite a few until I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse for the molds and equipment. The last time I saw one it was a police boat in Naples FL. I know one thing: at 55 knots it was fast enough for the job. About the same time Trojan came out with a 26’ inboard powered with a head in the console. Consoles have been growing ever since. Now the boats have grown in length 30’ to 40’ and have all the comforts of an express cruiser below, even TV and air. Sea Hunt offers one with a hardtop that has a vapor-mist
cooling system. About the only difference between center consoles and the new Cobalt 336 or the Sea Ray 350 SLX is that they don’t have walk around decks and their upholstery is more comfortable. Whichever type you choose, Mama and family will be comfortable for cruising or over nights. Some say these types of boats will take the place of the traditional express cruiser. America’s Cup update The Louis Vuitton Cup finals have been more about survival than sailing. The boat that replaced the destroyed Artemis boat lost two races to the Emirates New Zealand team. The Luna Rossa team that objected to the new safety regulations put into affect after “Artemis’ ” tragic accident with a fatality said that type of racing was like going to a bicycle race and having to put your training wheels back on. Now they have won a race. But all boats have had problems. Defender Oracle broke a rudder in a practice run. Luna Rosa had an electronic problem and had to replace a battery. Emirates had a hydro foil collapse and took a dive. Two sailors fell overboard, but were rescued by the chase boat and are OK. The Louis Vuitton Cup to get a winner/challenger is supposed to be the best out of 13 races. They were supposed to have two races a day, but they are only able to run one due to repairs. These boats ride on hydro-foils out of the water. Picture if you will a chair losing a leg. If it’s the front leg it falls forward and backward if a back leg; the chair being a 72’ catamaran traveling at 40 plus knots. You don’t have to use much imagination to realize what’s going to happen. One writer asked the New Zealand builder if there was any kind of warranty on these boats. He said “Yes, a concrete warranty. The minute the boat rolls off the concrete the warranty is over.” At present the race tally is New Zealand “Emirats” with a 4 to 1 lead out of the 13 races to get a challenger. So there are a lot of races to go. Artemis is not even mentioned. The races which have been a tradition since 1851 are supposed to start September 7th. I was amazed that my September issue of Yachting Magazine didn’t have a mention of the Cup. Maybe they can’t understand what is happening either. The races should be interesting if the defender and challenger can

Records set in rainfall, cool temps Last month was one of the strangest weather months I have ever seen. Our wet pattern continued and on August 19th, we surpassed our average annual rainfall total of 49.68 inches! The weekend of August 17th, we saw the coolest high temperature ever recorded for the date, which was 66 degrees. We shattered the old record of 74 previously set in 1892! So what is going on with our weather? The first observation I can make involves the position of the Bermuda High. The Bermuda High is a semi-permanent area of high pressure that, in the winter months, is centered in the eastern Atlantic Ocean near the Azores. During the summer, it migrates across the Atlantic and sets up near Bermuda. I have seen its position a little farther west than the past couple of years. Normally during the summer we get a southwest wind off the Gulf of Mexico, which sets us up with afternoon thunderstorms. With the Bermuda High being a little farther west, we have not only seen moist air coming off the Gulf, but moisture coming in from the deep tropics. In essence, we have become a tropical rain forest this summer. The air is so loaded with moisture that extreme rainfall, sometimes two to three inches per hour, is the result. With the position of the Bermuda High being a little farther west than in previous years, there is great concern among the southeastern meteorological community. We are now in the peak of the Atlantic hur-
ricane season (the actual peak is September 15th). If the Bermuda High Glenn was centered more toBurns ward the east, then tropical systems that develop Lanier in the Atlantic would Outlook ride around the western ridge of the high and then run parallel to the east coast, most remaining well off shore. However, given the Bermuda High’s current westward position, the western ridge would bring tropical systems right up through the Gulf of Mexico, across the Florida Panhandle, and right up into Georgia. This would not bode well for us at all. Our groundwater tables are full. The lakes are full. The soil is already saturated. Many areas have seen so much runoff from the tropical rains, massive tree roots are now exposed. Our National Weather Service hydrologist, Kent Frantz, is extremely concerned about mud slides. The worst case scenario would be a storm like Hurricane Opal. We would not only see heavy tropical rains but tornadoes and severe wind damage. I cannot imagine the number of trees that would go down in north Georgia. That being said, we could also get a storm like Tropical Storm Alberto in July of 1994. It was a weak storm as far as winds go, but the rains it brought, especially to south Georgia, were catastrophic. Either scenario is something we need to be prepared for. I do have a bit of good news. The longrange 90 day weather outlook takes the above average rainfall and brings it more to our west and northwest. The Climate

• Shanteau Continued from Page 17 As of late August, Shanteau was confirming appearances from eight Olympic swimmers, including Alyssa Anderson, Kathleen Hersey and possibly Amanda Weir. The event will be emceed by former Olympian and masters record holder Rowdy Gaines, NBC television swimming commentator known as the fastest human in the water in the 1980s. “We will have one gold medalist per stroke” conducting swim clinics on the beach after lunch, Shanteau said. Participants will split up into four groups and rotate for a 15-minute lesson with each Olympian. The morning’s racing includes 1 kilometer and 5 kilometer swims in Sunset Cove between the beach and opposite
shore for ages 12 and older and a 500 meter swim for juniors. The time limit for the 1 K is 60 minutes and the 5K is 2.5 hours. Racers start in stages, with the age 18 and younger group beginning before the masters. Participants should choose a distance they are comfortable with and not expect a rest area. Open water swims are very different from pool swims and do not offer a respite between laps. Shanteau said there will be 15-20 safety vessels (kayaks, paddle boards and personal watercraft) on patrol to assist if anyone has a problem or swims off course. Keeping active, busy and picking up a few bucks in the ‘after years’ Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002. Retirement. Now that is something that many long for, but if you are one of those people that could never sit around and do nothing like some, there’s got to be a way to spend your time doing something productive, and maybe picking up a few dollars on the side. Spend your retirement years living on a boat? We have been fortunate enough to do just that. As unorthodox as it may seem there is a large contingency of cruisers working or volunteering while traveling around the world. First solar lights installed on hazard buoys By Jane Harrison Flashing lights on hazard buoys on some sections of Lake Lanier now alert boaters to dangerous conditions they may not otherwise see in darkness. A cooperative effort between federal, county and local groups brought light to 20 markers in six areas of Lake Lanier. Most sites are located in Forsyth County, which contributed $20,000 to the Solar Lighting Program initiated by the Lake Lanier Association. Officials from LLA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 29, Hall and Forsyth counties, and Marine Specialities, Inc. were on hand at Tidwell Park Aug. 23 for the unveiling of a buoy light near the boat ramp. LLA President Val Perry said the lighting program grew from safety concerns in the aftermath of boat accidents on Lanier last year. The lighting project, along with stricter boating under the influence standards, boater education requirements and life jacket rules for children, are among the safety initiatives enacted since last year on the North Georgia lake.
“The marker lighter system will make it safer for people driving boats in the evening,” Perry said. He added the idea hatched in early summer when the safety alliance and Corps sought a way to put lights on hazard buoys that indicate submerged trees, outcrops of land, and other dangerous conditions for boaters. LLA member Bill Tannahill chaired a committee that researched solar lights and interacted with other entities to begin the pilot program. LLA hopes to expand the program to other lake areas, including creek inlets and bridges, when additional funding becomes available. Forsyth County donated $20,000 for the first lights, which were installed at no charge by Tom Child of Marine Specialties, Inc. The flashing orange lights beam one second on, three seconds off only in darkness. “This allows maximum use of light at night with a minimum charge during the day,” Tannahill said. Corps Operation Project Manager Tim Rainey said “it is wonderful LLA can accept donations for the acquisition and mainte-

USCGA Flotilla 29 officer Joe Edwards described the light unveiling as a “historic day” Lake Lanier. The lighted buoys are the first on the lake. LLA Executive Director Joanna Cloud said the safety alliance will seek funding from other lake area counties for addi-
tional lights. She added that the organization is working on an “Adopt a Light” program to get contributions from groups and individuals. Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Lanier cruise full of facts By Jane Harrison Tourists cruising Lake Lanier with Chattahoochee Riverkeeper founder Sally Bethea learned some surprising facts about the lake’s water quality, history and other issues. Among those revelations was the finding that the harmful nutrient level has risen along with the lake level this summer. About 45 passengers aboard the Chota Princess II toured roundtrip between Aqualand Marina to Buford Dam Aug. 3 in the Riverkeeper program conducted by Bethea and CRK Programs Director Jason Ulseth. “It is our mission to get people out so they can know about our river system and how all the pieces fit together from the lake to the Gulf,” Bethea said. The Chattahoochee River environmental watchdog organization conducts 10 expeditions a year, including paddle trips and creek side hikes. It was the first outing on Lanier for about half a dozen passengers curious about Georgia’s largest water reservoir. Many on board drove from metro Atlanta to cruise the north Georgia lake
that provides their water. On the rainless Saturday morning, a rarity this summer, they marveled at the size of Lake Lanier brimming at more than a foot above full pool. “It’s beautiful and much bigger than I imagined,” said Roberta Cook, founder of the River Line Historic Area group. She came for her first look at the lake which feeds into her Cobb County community. Ulseth reported that the spring and summer rains that raised the lake to its highest average summer level carried a disturbing element. The level of chlorophyll a is up 30 to 60 percent from last year, he said. High concentrations of the algae-like substance can deplete oxygen level and encourage algae blooms that cause fish kills, odor and foul tasting water. Ulseth said that contrary to popular non-scientific belief, heavy dousing of rain does not infuse the lake with fresh, pristine water to dilute pollutants. Instead, the deluges wash runoff from agriculture, fertilizers and wastewater processors into the lake. Results from CRK’s 10 testing sites on Lanier reveal

chlorophyll a levels from April to July were at least a third greater than the same period in 2012 when rainfall was half of what fell this year. Ulseth said other indicators of water quality are pretty good. With the help of volunteers, he submerged a black and white disk to test water clarity at a site in view of the dam. The secchi disk was visible to a depth of three meters, a positive sign of lake health. The dissolved oxygen
level of 7.7 milligrams was also good, measuring above the 4 mg. state standard of what fish need to survive. Ulseth demonstrated water quality tests for passengers on one end of the boat while Bethea shared facts about her organization and the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin on the other. Bethea said the non-profit CRK has protected the health of Chattahoochee through lawsuits that caused cities and counties to
tighten wastewater treatment standards and a hotline for the public to report suspected spills and pollution. If an individual sees dead fish, muddy water, or “something bad” on the water, they can report their finding on CRK’s hotline. “We know who to call. We’ve been around a while; we’ve filed a few lawsuits,” Bethea said. The 7,000 member organization established in 1994 is a See CRK, page 42

• CRK Continued from Page 39 member of the international Waterkeeper Alliance. It promotes conservation, education and seeks to influence public and private initiatives to protect the river and its tributaries. Bethea said next legislative session CRK will push for passage of HB 549 which would establish statewide emergency response procedures to deal with pollution caused by spills or illegal discharge, such as the one that killed thousands of fish on the Ogeechee River last year when a textile processor illegally let industry by-products into river. Additionally, the river watchdog plans to mount opposition to SB 213, the Flint River Drought Protection Act, which Bethea said “threatens the basic water rights system in Georgia.” Bethea said CRK also voices its concerns to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on various issues, including the Corps’ revision of its 40-plus year old water control manual for Lake Lanier. The organization generally opposes the construction of reservoirs, such as the proposed Glades Reservoir in Hall County,
which Bethea labeled a huge waste of taxpayer money. “It’s cheaper and smarter to look at the feasibility of using this lake better than damming up rivers,” she said. She said that the state does not have the oversight and information network it needs to enforce current environmental standards and promote environmentally friendly practices. She decried the lack of scientists and environmentalists on Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division board, which she said is “all political.” The EPD is “hamstrung in so many ways” due to its composition and lack of staff, she said. In Georgia’s private sector “there are companies who realize that sustainability and going green are great for their bottom line,” she said. CRK promotes wise use of the Chattahoochee watershed, which is the smallest to serve any metro area in the country. The Chattahoochee supplies water to four million people and 70 percent of metro Atlanta. Those on board the CRK catamaran departed with a head full of facts from the three-hour tour.
Patrick Thomas brought 6-yearold daughter Ava for her second excursion on Lake Lanier. He wanted her to see the source of her drinking water and get a perception of the lake and river system that bring it to her.

Happy Madison leaves legacy for Lake Lanier Islands, North Georgia By Pamela A. Keene The movie stars have come and gone, but there’s still evidence of their nearly four months in and around Lake Lanier. Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison production company left Flowery Branch better than they found it, choosing the area for the majority of filming of “The Familymoon.” Originally called “Blended,” other filming locations included Buford, Lawrenceville, Gainesville, and eventually, South Africa. Sandler and actress Drew Barrymore and their families were spotted across North Georgia, not only on the various sets of the film, but also dining out at area restaurants and enjoying free time at the lake. By now, word has spread that one of the film’s beneficiaries was Four Seasons on Lanier neighborhood, where the production company built a softball field that was used for at least a week of shooting. When Happy Madison left, the field remained. The production company’s crew spent more than 90 days at Lake Lanier Islands Resort, some arriving as early as April to prepare for the filming. The resort not only served as home base for most of the cast and crew, it will also be seen in the
film. “They shot six times here at the resort,” said Kelley Wilson, Legacy Lodge sales manager. “And they also spent time at the park. People knew they were here and came out to see them.” As part of the film, the production company used the wave pool at LanierWorld. But the waves weren’t big enough, so Happy Madison donated $37,000 to enhance the wave action. “They put money into the wave pool for a scene in the movie.” Blended’s wrap party was also held at the resort’s Legacy Point, a catered affair attended by more than 200 people from the cast and crew in mid-August. This was the first time that a movie has been filmed at Lake Lanier Islands Resort, Wilson said. “We would love to have more movies. It’s certainly good for business.” Filming also took place at Riverside Military Academy, Green Street Circle and Green Street in Gainesville, Mall of Georgia, and other locations. Sandler and crew were spotted at various eateries including Fish Tales in Flowery Branch, Mellow Mushroom and Pasquale’s in Gainesville. The film is set for release in May, 2014.

Fairy tales really do come true at the lake
‘Something Blue’ creates destination weddings at Lake Lanier Islands Resort Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene ittle girls spin dreams and hopes about their big day almost from the time they can talk. All the grownup girls in pretty dresses, surrounded by friends and flowers, getting ready to wed their soul mates is the stuff that fairy tales are made of. And so it is at Lake Lanier Islands, especially since the Williams family took over management of the 1,100-acre resort several years ago. Oh, there have always been weddings at the Islands but not until about three years ago did the concept of waterside weddings blossom. “Mr. Williams is the visionary for Something Blue,” said Karl Owara, director of catering and weddings. “And he’s always about doing things to right way from the beginning and that has been his goal with hosting weddings here at the resort.” So, weddings and special events have now gone beyond the ballroom at Legacy Lodge (the Is-

land’s hotel) to nearly 20 venues that include floating platforms, rustically elegant pavilions and grassy rolling hillsides. Using both permanent structures and tents, the islands can accommodate weddings with up to 500 guests. “There’s something about the water that’s romantic,” Owara said. “Lake Lanier is the closest thing we have to a beach in Atlanta, and with the ease of traveling to and from Atlanta by air or automobile, more and more couples are selecting Lake Lanier Islands for their destination weddings.” All a wedding party needs can be provided at the resort – lodging for family and friends, activities like horseback riding, golf, or boating in the days leading up to the wedding, a wide variety of catering choices from light buffets to lavish sit-down dinners and even romantic suites for the honeymoon. “We provide a one-stop destination for the rehearsal dinner,

the bridesmaids’ luncheon, the ceremony and reception and even a post-wedding brunch before the couple leaves for their honeymoon,” he said. Recently, the resort hosted a wedding for a bride who lived in Houston and the groom lived in New Orleans. “The family lives in Atlanta and having a destination wedding at the resort worked perfectly,” Owara said. “They turned their destination wedding into a family reunion and stayed multiple nights.” The former hospitality center between Holiday Marina and the front gates of the park has been converted to a wedding paradise where brides and grooms, parents and friends meet with staff to plan their big event. The interior is dressed with tulle and organdy, setting the scene for what’s to come. From the time they enter to meet with a wedding specialists through all the details of the event, brides receive personal attention to create a wedding event that’s uniquely their own. Four wedding specialists on staff are available to meet with brides seven days a week in twohour appointments that include tours of venues across the property. “On Saturdays, our specialists may each have as many as six appointments,” Owara said. “We take all the time that’s necessary to ensure that all their questions
are answered.” Decisions to be made include selecting the wedding venue, the type of reception, the menu and various other details. The resort can provide brides with officiants, florists, decorators and coordinators/planners to manage the tasks leading up to the wedding. There’s even a contact for someone who will bring white doves to be released during the ceremony.

The Islands can provide a horse and carriage for the bride and groom. Owara said that the initial appointment may include the bride and groom, the bride and her mother, the bride and both mothers, bride and maid of honor, and sometimes some of the bridesmaids. “This is a big decision about where to marry, so we welSee Weddings, page 51

come the brides to bring whoever they want to meet with us. Typically, the staff recommends selecting a date and venue at least six to nine months in advance, although dates in June – the “wedding” month – tend to fill up early. The bulk of the weddings take place from May through early November. With such a large number of venues, the resort has hosted as many as five weddings on one day. “Because locations are spread out, there’s little concern for overlap,” he said “We have plenty of room and ample staff for each event and plan accordingly.” When the Islands made the move to develop outdoor venues, the first to be created was Legacy Pointe, with a beautiful pair of open-air gazebos joined by a graceful archway. A backdrop of hardwoods with the lake beyond, the site is popular also because of three-peaked tented pavilion is perfect for lavish or informal receptions. Next came PineIsle Pointe with its rolling meadow that leads to a sweeping view of the lake. Nearby – just a short walk – receptions are held in the climatecontrolled pavilion that includes a large stone fireplace that’s used when the nights are cooler. Other venues include the floating
Venetian Pier, guests seated under cover as the bridal party approaches across the dock; the Carriage House near Sunset Cove; the Summer House with a pool and deck; or Legacy Courtyard, directly behind Legacy Lodge. Of course, couples can also select an indoor venue for their ceremony and/or reception, such as the Grand Ballroom for larger weddings, the Magnolia Room for intimate ceremonies, or the Veranda Room. Weddings can also be hosted poolside at the Conference Center. For the more adventuresome, choose the Island Princess, the resort’s 85-foot yacht with enclosed seating on the main level and upper deck with separate bar. The 75-foot Island Queen also accommodates rehearsal dinners, wedding ceremonies and receptions, and both can include sunset cruises. The resort’s Spirit of Lanier paddleboat can accommodate 40 guests. “Several years ago, we were doing only about 30 or 40 weddings a year,” Owara said. “We’re expecting to host somewhere around 200 this year, because of all our new venues and the romance of the lake. Weddings are such an exciting time in a couple’s life, and we’re so pleased to be a part of the beginning of their lives together.”

Two shore clean-ups aim to pick up tons of trash By Jane Harrison Volunteers will take aim at rusted shopping carts, old tires, and general refuse released by careless hands in two Lake Lanier area clean-ups this month. Both events are expected to remove tons of trash from Lanier and its tributaries. The first on Sept. 21 targets Flat Creek, an inlet notorious for collecting run-off from litterbugs on city streets. Volunteers in the Rivers Alive Adopt a Stream Clean-up organized by the City of Gainesville and Keep Hall Beautiful will meet at the Flat Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (2641 Old Flowery Branch Rd.) beginning at 8:30 a.m. Make a reservation by calling (770) 532-7462 or sign up at www.facebook.com/GainesvilleWater. Participants should wear closed toe shoes and clothing for muddy conditions. Nest record for Georgia’s loggerhead sea turtles Loggerhead sea turtles nesting in Georgia have hit a new high for the fourth straight year. Sea Turtle Program Coordinator Mark Dodd of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said on Aug. 13 that more than 2,141 nests – last year’s record total – have been documented on barrier island beaches. The count had reached 2,242 by that morning, according to www.seaturtle.org. While nesting season is nearly over, the total will not be final until fall, as scientists use genetics to identify 11 “unknown” nests. This summer marks only the second time since comprehensive surveys began in 1989 that the federally threatened reptiles have laid more than 2,000 nests in Georgia. Nest totals have also climbed steadily since 2009, the longest such span in 25 years and an encouraging change from the usual up and down fluctuations in loggerhead nesting. DNR analysis last year showed that the increasing trend is statistically significant. “We feel like we’re seeing the continued recovery of loggerheads,” said Dodd, a senior Nongame Conservation Section biologist with the DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division. The health of this iconic species affects coastal environments and economies, an impact heightened in a state where more than 30 percent of residents 16 and older take part in wildlife-watching activities.
Dodd credits the recovery to a wide range of conservation measures, from Georgia Sea Turtle Cooperative members using wire screen to shield nests from predators to commercial fishery regulations reducing sea turtle deaths off Georgia’s coast and far into the Atlantic Ocean. The Sea Turtle Cooperative is a network of volunteers, researchers and agency employees who patrol barrier island beaches daily during the sea turtle nesting season, protecting and managing nests. Dodd cautioned that the current nesting run still falls shy of federal recovery benchmarks: a two percent annual increase for 50 years resulting in a statewide total of 2,800 nests a year. But he’s excited about the apparent rebound, particularly after a slow start to the nesting season had some turtle watchers thinking 2013 might be a down year for loggerheads. And while nesting comes to a close, hatching is in full swing. About 23 percent of sea turtle hatchlings on Georgia beaches have dug out of their sand nests and headed toward the surf. The hatching success rate – hovering at about 60 percent – has been boosted by the lack of tropical storms swamping Georgia so far this summer. Dodd said two major factors affect sea turtle hatching success rates: predation, mainly by feral hogs and raccoons, and tropical storms, including the stormspawned tidal surges that inundate nests.

The changing real estate market on Lake Lanier If you were around Lake Lanier in 2008 and 2009, you probably remember the dismal real estate market. We were living through a catastrophic recordbreaking drought, and the great recession was in full swing. Many homeowners with upside-down home values were facing foreclosures, and home buyers were few and far between. Thankfully, so far in 2013, it’s a brighter day. Lake sales trending up The beautiful lake has been above full pool all summer, so lake enthusiasts are re-energized about Lanier. Interest rates, though starting to rise, are still very low. Thanks to the recession, lake home prices remain 25 to 30 percent below their peak in 2007. People considering putting their homes on the market have been forced to do renovations to be competitive, so there is a larger percentage of up-to-date houses available. The result? A much improved Lake Lanier real estate market. In the first seven months of the year, lake sales were up 30 percent over the same period in 2012. The average number of days on the market for a lake house has dropped to 157. That’s
a 43 percent decrease from its peak value in 2011 of 275 days. The average price for a lake house is reasonably healthy at $464,000, but the price points that make up that average have changed a little. Higher priced homes are starting to sell again, and final sales prices are coming in much closer to list prices. The accompanying graph shows the number of lakefront homes with private docks sold in the JanuaryJuly period since 2008. Hot markets As you can see, the number of lake homes sold is definitely rising. The next logical question is which markets are the hottest for Lake Lanier sales? Not surprisingly, Gainesville, which is the largest city on the lake, has the most homes sold so far this year with 69. Cumming is second with 29, and Dawsonville is third with 14. The accompanying pie chart shows a breakdown of where these 2013 lake homes sales were located. Financing Mortgage bankers and real estate agents are often asked the most common way that buyers finance their lake homes. About 65
percent take out a conventional loan with at least 20 percent down. Another 10 percent use other categories of loans with less than 20 percent down. These financing options normally require mortgage insurance which adds to the cost. But the most notable trend of this past year is the number of cash buyers who have purchased lake homes. Fully 20 percent of lake home purchases are made by cash buyers. Most experts believe that this is the result of lessons learned in the recession about buying within your means and not beyond. The rest of the purchases were made through FHA, VA and other special financing programs. Most popular price points Because there are more people who can afford the less expensive properties, those will always be the most popular price points. However, we are starting to see more buyers in the jumbo price ranges ($500s and up). Here is a breakdown of the number of sales in the first seven months of 2013 by price range. Price Range Lake Homes Sold $0-300k 28 301-400k 34

The inventory of available lake homes exponentially exceeded the number of buyers. That competition among sellers resulted in a huge drop in home prices, and buyers were
often able to request virtually anything they wanted as part of the sale. In today’s market, we are seeing a shift from a buyer’s market to a seller’s market. There are more buyers than there are “musthave” lake homes; therefore, we often see multiple buyers for the best valued properties and full or greater-than-full priced offers. It’s important to define what a “musthave” lake home is to today’s buyer. In most cases, it is an updated home that is competitively priced. It must have a lake view, reasonably easy walk to the lake, See Real Estate, page 71

Lake economy mixed after rainy summer on over-full lake By Jane Harrison As Lake Lanier brimmed at its highest summer level ever, one might expect a booming lake economy buoyed by high waters. But, many lake area businesses report the rain that raised the lake above full pool since early spring has plummeted their bottom line for the season. Some business owners even assert that they do better during drought-ridden summers enriched with golden sunshine, a rare sight during this peak season when many a weekend lake outing got rained out. A major bright spot in an otherwise dreary 2013 summer emerged with a rise in lake home sales. The rainfall that filled coves and floated docks created a gorgeous lakescape that lit up home sales around the lake. And folks who enjoy looking out on the blue view from their dry living rooms are getting set to hit the water when the sun comes out. Businesses that build and repair docks report a record year that hints that even though people may not be getting out on the lake, they’re thinking about it. That could form the silver lining to this cloud-filled summer for years to come. Businesses that rely on recreation seekers for income were hit hard, especially in July. “The
Fourth of July is like Christmas for us,” said Missy Burgess, spokesperson for Lake Lanier Islands Resort. “The July Fourth weekend was the absolute worst we’ve ever had. It rained every day, all day.” People don’t go to the LanierWorld beach and water park when it rains. Nor do they mingle at Sunset Cove, rent boats at Harbor Landing, play golf or ride horses. “The rain in July really impacted our recreational business,” Burgess said. But, it did not impact the hotel, where group and business bookings, as well as weddings, kept guests coming in. Burgess expected hotel reservations this fall, plus the resort’s concert series and popular Magical Nights of Lights holiday tour offer a “good chance to recover” from the slow summer. Smaller recreation outfitters, like Hammonds Fishing Center, are also looking to off-season and non-traditional sales to help out. “Thank God I put hunting in. If not for that we would be struggling,” said Tim Hawkins, manager of the family owned store. He hoped hunting supplies, school apparel, and the store’s staple, fishing gear, will even out flat sales of float tubes and water toys, which dipped to half of normal.
Seth Wolcott, district manager of West Marine, said that sales of a non-traditional item, stand up paddle boards, have helped balance the season. He said purchases of the popular flatwater surf boards show that “people are trying hard to get in the water” during a summer that left many a boat tied to the dock. Area marinas report that boat slip and dry stack occupancy has been stable or up a little over previous years. Gainesville Marina President Philip Burton gave Summer 2013 a “mixed review.” He calculated sales are off 10 to 20 percent in some departments, while others remained steady. “Gas sales are struggling to stay at par (with past years),” he said and boat repair service is lagging. “Quite frankly, people are not using their boats as much … so they don’t have the tendency to break” or need fuel. Boat sales, though, are about three to five percent higher statewide, said Burton, an officer of the Marine Trade Association of Metropolitan Atlanta. He speculated that if not for the heavy rain, boat sales might have risen to double digits this summer. He added that since his marina’s rental boat fleet is small, his business did not suffer as much as others.

Courtesy docks across the lake have shown more vacancies this summer due to the abnormal rainfall, especially during weekends.
Brent Pearson, Operations Manager of Traina Enterprises, which owns Port Royale, said that although slip and stack occupancy is up a little at the Cumming marina, small boat and personal watercraft rental is off about 20 percent from last year. “It’s definitely because of rainy weekends,” he said. Boat sales and service remained about the same. Pearson and Burton share views about lake level and sunshine. “We would much prefer to have sun shining and dry summer months, even if it means lower water levels, for our business. People use their boats a lot more when it’s dry and hot, even with low water, “ Pearson said. “In fact the water level has really been too high this year for some of our summer season. Make hay while the sun shines
Such was the hope of other businesses looking for a dry, warm autumn to make up for lost revenue. “We’re hoping for better weather. We’re keeping positive … the lake is fuller than ever, we’re hoping that will allow boaters to come out more in the fall,” said Janet Bennett, who runs Aqualand Marina’s Dockside Grill with husband, Chris. She estimated about 80 percent of their diners come by boat and their number rises and falls with the sun. “We either have a tremendous drop” when the rain comes down, or “record days” when the sun comes out, she said. “We’re balancing out.” The same was true at Fish Tales Lakeside Grille at Hideaway Bay Marina. “When the sun is out, we have experienced record crowds,” said owner Dale Ozaki. He added that last year’s drier summer created a “perfect scenario” for a restaurant on Lanier. “Experiencing a drought during the summer allowed us to have great boating weather almost every weekend. Our sales grew drastically,” he said. He indicated that an increase in diners coming from land has off-set a decrease in boat traffic. Business volume is actually up 12 percent, he said, attributed to 60 percent of customers coming by car. Normally, the majority of diners arrive by boat. “We will continue to focus on growing land traffic and know that under prime circumstances, the boaters will come in record numbers,” he said. Boat business on the full lake, as Burton noted, has been good. “It’s been far better than at low times,” said Brent Danneman, See Economy, page 63

Birthday fishing bonus for boat owners
• Economy Continued from page 50
owner of Park Marine. “A full lake makes the boat business, of course I’m a little prejudiced.” He said he’s seen a rise in jet boat sales (“dominating the market”), pontoon and deck boats. People who are buying the boats are among those buying houses, installing new docks, and spiffing up old ones. Frank Norton, Jr., whose The Norton Agency in Gainesville tracks region real estate trends, reported lake home sales up 12 percent over last year thanks to a better economy and a full lake. The average price, $480,000, is up five percent. A total of 120 lake homes across all price levels were purchased the first six months. “Of course good water is still the selling feature especially now that buyers can look up property on satellite,” he said. “A full lake has helped the situation pretty substantially and publicity (about the lake being full) has calmed people’s anxiety that the lake won’t always be down 15 feet” as it was
during drought times, he said. The summer rain “hasn’t slowed down the looking,” he added, especially by those seeking “a long haul investment.” “People are enjoying the lake, seeing how beautiful it is brimming to the top,” said Norton, whose perspective comes from 57 years of living on or around Lanier. He added that the estimated 10,000 homes that front Lake Lanier and 20,000 others with lake access contribute substantially to the tax base and economy of surrounding counties. Lake related businesses directly linked to an up tick in home sales are benefiting, or at least breaking even. “New people are coming in, buying older homes and fixing up their docks,” said Tom Child, owner of Marine Specialties, Inc. He estimated customer demand for new docks and repairs will help balance out a loss in sales for rip rap and shoreline steps, which cannot be installed when the water is up so high. He predicted overall sales would be about the same this year
as in a drought year. “It’s very rare the stars align and we have a good economy and average lake level,” he said. “After 26 years of doing it, we roll with the punches.” Brandon Elliott, in charge of residential services for Browns Bridge Dock, said this has been “the best year ever” for dock repairs. Crews have been busy fixing docks damaged by falling trees and installing new docks. “We sold a bunch in August and orders are still coming in,” he said. This indicates to him people are thinking about getting out on the lake and will launch when the weather’s right. That’s been Burton’s observation at Gainesville Marina. He said the number of folks who hang out around the marina docks is the same as last year. “There are not as many people getting out on the water … except when the sun pops out. It can be a cloudy, rainy afternoon and then the sun comes out and you don’t know where they all come from … the boats start rolling in.”
Thanks to a new program that started in July, Georgia residents who have a boat registered with the state can fish on their birthday and for two days after as part of their boat registration fee. It’s a three-day bonus for the state’s 300,000 resident boat owners. The offer from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources also covers use of some DNR shooting ranges, plus some other sporting privileges. To take advantage of it, boat owners just have to get outdoors. When they do, whether its bream fishing on a family ski trip to Lake Lanier, bass fishing at Paradise Public Fishing Area, birding at Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area or shooting at the Yuchi WMA range, they’ll join more than 2.75 million Georgians who fish, hunt, shoot or take part in other wildlife-related recreation. Boating is a bridge to fishing (a 2010 survey ranked fishing as the second-most popular boating activity). And with DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division focused on increasing participation among the core groups it serves, the birthday offer for boat owners is an obvious one.
For Georgia, that recruitment can have a far-reaching impact. In 2011, anglers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts spent nearly $4.6 billion in the state, a 2011 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey found. People involved in the outdoors also are more likely to support land conservation and donate their time to conservation efforts, according to a report by the Recreational Boating & Fishing and the Outdoor foundations. The birthday bonus is a threeday resident combination license that not only allows Georgians 16 and older who own a vessel and have a valid, current registration to fish in fresh and saltwater for three consecutive days (starting on their birthday), it covers many other recreational opportunities. These include fishing at public fishing areas, accessing state lands where a Georgia Outdoor Recreational Pass is otherwise required, hunting small game and feral hogs on private land, and using shooting ranges where a WMA stamp or GORP is needed. The license is good for the primary boat owner’s birthday during the three years the boat registration is valid.

The best way to see all that Boston has to offer “Oh my God,” was my stunned reaction when I realized that I had left my bag with over $5,000 worth of camera lenses on the Super Tours bus! As most tourists feel in an impossible situation so far from home, I was terrified! It all happened when I got off of the “hop on-hop off” Upper Deck Trolley to see the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) at the Boston Navy Yard. So, I quickly dialed the phone number listed on the Super Tours guide map and told the dispatcher what had happened. Within seconds, the Group Sales Manager, Marc Dube, called his driver Joey, who secured my bag with the expensive lenses. Less than 30 minutes later, Marc showed up at the Navy Yard bus stop in his personal car with my bag and drove me to the next event on my schedule. This was simply a microcosm of the professionalism and care that I was afforded throughout my series of trips associated with Boston Super Tours. After two failed attempts to see all that Boston has to offer on my own, one phone call to Bob Leikauskas (Master Captain at Super Duck Tours of Boston) was all I needed to assure me the best view of the city, harbor, and surrounding area. All one needs is this one simple ticket: Premium Upper Deck Trolley Tour with Cambridge Loop & Harbor Splash at www.BostonSuperTours.com. Hop On/Hop Off over two days The Hop On/Hop Off package includes a free Super Duck Harbor Splash plus your choice of five more free tours. Purchase a Boston City Pass to go with the Premium Super Tours ticket, and you will have all you need to see and do everything important on your trip to Boston. Here are some of the locations you can visit via a Boston City Pass (www.citypass.com/boston): • New England Aquarium Offering more than 800 species of marine animals. • Museum of Science Explore hands-on, minds-on science. • Skywalk Observatory. Only observatory in New England with 360-degree views. • Museum of Fine Arts. Featuring masterpieces of art from around the world and across the ages. • Harvard Museum of Natural History. Admission to all permanent and special exhibits, as well as special programs at this highly acclaimed natural history museum. Even though money is saved when buying these passes, the best parts are that you bypass long ticket lines, you have your own tour guide and you solve the major problem of getting around in Boston traffic. Renting a car in Boston with its overabundance of vehicles and impossible parking problem is a bad option. Either use Super Tours trolleys, local mass transit, or do as I did ... call Alex with 555 Limo Service at 857-544-6050. with a friendly driver. During my two days of touring in Boston, I was amazed at the historical buildings and artifacts that have been preserved among the modern skyscrapers, which the Super Tours drivers eloquently explained. The walk through a maze of interesting shops and eateries in Quincy Market is a must. Also, nobody should come to Boston without standing on the deck of “Old Ironsides” in the Boston Navy Yard. That old ship once saved our country from the most powerful navy in the world and is still the oldest active naval vessel in history. The Super Duck Splash and Harbor Tour are both entertaining as well as enlightening, and I found the Charles River Cruise by the Charles Riverboat Company (www.charlesriverboat.com) between Cambridge, Harvard, MIT and Boston proper to be picturesque and educational. That company also has an interesting, laid back Sunset Cruise on a real paddle wheel boat in Boston Harbor each evening.
It would take a book to mention all that I saw during my Boston stay, but some of the best other memories were of the New England Aquarium, Long Wharf, the Old State House, Boston Common, the Cheers Boston Bar and Grille, Fenway Park, the Old North Church, the Paul Revere House, the Boston Tea Party Museum, and the Old South Meeting House. What I failed to elaborate in
this article is one of the best experiences when visiting this old seacoast town ... the fantastic food! In my article next month, I will take readers on a culinary tour of some of the tastiest and most unique restaurants in our country! Sawnee Campground will be open this fall, winter
CELEBRATING OUR 19TH YEAR OF SERVING LAKE LANIER!
If you’re looking for camping opportunities this fall and winter on Lake Lanier, consider Sawnee Campground. It will be open on a first-come, first-served basis from September 20, 2013, until March 23, 2014. Campers can select their campsite and pay, review fees, rules and regulations, or obtain maps of the park and lake at the self-service registration station by the campground’s gatehouse off Buford Dam Road. Although the gatehouse is not staffed fulltime, park rangers and camp hosts will be making rounds regularly. Sawnee Campground offers many beautiful waterfront sites from 50 AMP service for larger RVs to primitive pack-in sites for tents. Nearby amenities include grocery stores and restaurants. Easily accessible trails include the Little Ridge Trail to the west and the Laurel Ridge Trail to the east, a four-mile loop that includes excellent views of the lake and crosses through many U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks.
Explaining Rule 7 – The risk of collision At this point in the series on navigation rules I want to change up the delivery a bit and present a simpler way to understand and become confident with applying the law in any situation. The best approach to master the rules and apply them with confidence is to visualize various scenarios that could happen when meeting another vessel. Coming from a different facet of the maritime world, the major thing that caught my attention on the lake was the difference in water conditions, the volume of traffic during peak times, and miles upon miles of similar looking shoreline. As a professional navigator I sincerely appreciate what it takes to become familiar with this beautiful lake. It can demand all your attention to ensure you have a good boating day on the water without incident. Conventional wisdom suggests boaters attend classes, some with a minimum of 16 hours of classroom training in order to get the basic understanding of the navigation rules. All would agree, reading and passing an examination is only the beginning of the process to understanding the rules. The biggest threat out on the water is not the depth, amount of traffic, time of day, condition of

the weather and water … it is the operator, the person in charge. Rule 7, both International and Inland is about a half page of directions on how to assess the risk. Those of you that have taken a Rules of the Road course or exam can attest it is extremely difficult to recall all the exact components of the 38 rules that comprise over 200 pages of the book. The bottom line in Rule 7: Risk of Collision always exists whether from another vessel, grounding, or near the dock and it’s your job to correctly decipher and interpret what you see as driver of the vessel. Here’s the answer to this task: If the object you are looking at does not move laterally, also known as bearing drift, or does have “Steady Bearing Decreasing Range” then Risk of Collision is present.
The simple initial action to reduce the chance of that situation developing is to SLOW DOWN. That will be further discussed in the next article in the series; Rule 8 - Action to Avoid Collision. There is a very innovative and proven method in learning the Rules of the Road. The key to recall is to visualize the information in a graphic format. Not referring to a photographic memory but remembering pictures that have profound meaning in a set order. Based on the premise, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” you can master the navigation rules using this system with outstanding results! This method does not utilize flash cards or diagrams in a book but a very direct, formatted approach employing graphic images. This process has resulted in greatly improving the passing rate of the rules exam and even more importantly, total understanding. Boating education comes in many different packages delivered by some of the best instructors in the business. Consider the benefits of attending a training seminar. If you would like to explore more about boating education please email me. Steve Johnson, US Coast Guard (ret). is with CPO Johnson, Inc.

Questioning a colleague’s dedication to our profession Frogs are committing suicide in my front yard by the boatload, my pool is now an income generating rice paddy, and the trees are coughing and hacking about their rheumatism incessantly. And what I want to know is – who is in charge of the weather around here? Given who I am and what I know, I was quite sure that Mr. Weather himself, Glenn Burns, was the person in charge of the heavens. I mean, after all, he is always on television telling everyone just exactly what is in store weather wise – sort of an omnipotent weather wizard watcher. So it just made sense that I should call him up and get the lowdown before we all drown in our beds. I mean, we are practically colleagues working for this so called newspaper. Simply said, we share the ignominy of having stooped so low as to actually work for this rag. More important, we are comrades in arms as we both obsess

I tried to get him back on track, “Glenn, it’s me, Phillip.” There was a confusing pause. “You know, from the paper.” To which he finally responded, “Oh, you’re from the Atlanta Journal, and you want my comments on the amazing hail stone head.” “No, Glenn,” I responded. We are colleagues at the paper. You know, LAKESIDE ON LANIER!” There was another long embarrassing pause. Then he said, “What is Lakeside on Lanier?” “That’s Alan’s paper, stop kidding around, Glenn. We’re part of a team. I read your column and you read mine, you know, we are professionals.” There was a really long si-
lence, and he asked, “So there is really no ice replica of Guy Sharp?” “No, I just wanted your thoughts on this crazy weather. You should see my front yard. The dead frogs are making my drive way slippery and dangerous. Should we call out the whole weather team to strategize?” That’s when the line went dead. I don’t know what Glenn has against frogs, but I don’t think he should be in charge of the weather with that kind of attitude. I mean, I don’t even think he was listening to me when I asked him if he wanted some rice. Phillip Bond Sartain is a Gainesville, GA lawyer and freelance writer.

and decent water. Other homes are selling, but it’s that combination of features that has been creating a buying frenzy for certain homes. Homes with shallow water, little or no lake views, or list price above the market are still harder to sell. The other homes may be great homes, but it’s the combination of features that sets apart the “must-have” homes and creates the competition among buyers. In recent years, it was very common for buyers to offer significantly below list price for lake homes. Because there were so few buyers, sellers had to counter those offers to try to get the purchase price up to an acceptable level. Today, we are seeing more and more sellers simply reject the low offers. Home prices hit bottom over a year ago, and sellers know it. With the rising home prices, most sellers believe they can wait it out until the market is better. For buyers who spent the recession on the fence, they have probably missed the best deals. However, with
home prices and rates just starting to rise, it’s still not too late. Bev Knight is the lead agent for The Good Life Group, Lake Lanier Specialists with Keller Williams Lanier Partners.
