Gov. Deal, REACH to be honored at Lanier Islands’ concert

By Pamela A. Keene An event not to be missed, the September 13, REACH for the Stars benefit concert features three musical acts in a special tribute to Gov. Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal. It takes place at Lanier Islands’ Peachtree Pointe amphitheater and newly renovated pavilion.

The Thursday night concert will be headlined by Nashville songwriter and Albany native Dallas Davidson. He’s been prolific with more than 100 of his songs recorded by such famed musicians as Brad Paisley and Keith Urban with “Start a Band,” Blake Shelton with “All About Tonight,” Lady Antebellum with “Just a Kiss,” and Josh Turner with “All Over Me.” “This is a chance to honor the legacy that Gov. and Mrs. Deal have created for Georgia,” said Jennifer Herring, senior vice president of College Affordability Initiatives at the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC).

In addition to the REACH Program, GSFC administers more than 20 state financial aid programs, including the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships. “They have both been so involved in educational initiatives, plus they

have truly given of themselves to the state over the past eight years.”

Named the 2012 American Country Music Songwriter of the Year, Davidson had a recordbreaking nine No. 1 hits over two years, and so far, a total of 13 No. 1 hits. Davidson is bringing his All-star Nashville Band to the Lake Lanier REACH concert.

Opening acts are Smith & Wesley and the ever-popular Banks & Shane.”

Tickets are on sale at lanierislands.com/REACH at $50 for lower stage seats in Peachtree Pavilion and $35 for the lawn.

One hundred percent of ticket sales will be donated to REACH Scholars.

“Hall County and Gainesville City Schools are both part of the REACH program,” Herring said.

“The money raised will support REACH Scholars across the 134 participating school systems.”

REACH: Creating a Path to Success The REACH Georgia Scholarship program began in 2012 as a two-year pilot program with five school systems: Rabun, Douglas,

Dodge, Quitman and Bulloch counties and a group of 35 students. AT&T was the program’s first corporate sponsor with a $250,000 donation to fund scholarships.

“With the projected incoming class in October the program will have or is reaching nearly 1,700 students, many who will be the first to attend college in their families,” Herring said. “All REACH Scholars are part of the free or reduced lunch program See REACH, page 8

Peachtree Pointe transformed; debuts at REACH concert

By Pamela A. Keene For special events, meetings and weddings, Peachtree Pointe at Lanier Islands just got better.

The pavilion has been enclosed, carpeted and air-conditioned.

“We are excited that our first official event at the new pavilion at Peachtree Pointe will be the REACH for the Stars concert on September 13 to honor Gov. and Mrs. Deal,” said Missy Burgess, director of public relations and partnerships at Lanier Islands. “It has been updated to be state-of-the-art, with two new wedding venues – The Waterfall and The Sunset – plus

we now have a private kitchen and food and beverage on site.”

The renovated pavilion, located at the back of the amphitheater, can seat up to 500 people banquet style. It can also be divided into two separate venues. Both have bride rooms and other amenities. It will also be used for meetings and other special events. “The renovated pavilion will be a real gamechanger for us,” Burgess said.

“And we are pleased to be able to pay tribute here to Gov and Mrs. Deal for all they’ve done for the state of Georgia. It’s going to be a great evening.”

REACH Scholars, who start with an academic coach and mentor in 8th grade, have access to $10,000 to attend any 2-year or 4year institution in the University System of Georgia, the Technical College System of Georgia or eligible independent private schools in Georgia. Throughout their last five years in school, they are paired with mentors and are required to maintain a GPA of 2.5 through graduation.

“We have also seen great success with the first two classes of REACH Scholars, as the average GPA of those graduating is 3.3,” said Gov. Deal. “Further, many colleges and universities recognize the value of the program and match or double-match REACH scholarship funding to provide

scholars with additional resources to achieve success.”

With the addition of 31 new systems during the 2018-2019 academic year, the program will serve nearly 1,700 students in 134 school systems across the state.

The goal of the program is to be in all 180 school systems by the 2020-2021 academic year, serving almost 3,000 students.

“The REACH Program is an investment in some of our state’s brightest students. REACH Scholars come from low-income families and sign a contract in which they promise to maintain good grades, uphold good behavior, meet with mentors and devote themselves to completing high school,” said Gov. Deal.

“Through this program, we are providing REACH Scholars with the encouragement and support to finish high school strong and move on to lives of success, no

matter what their background may be.”

Lanier Islands is hosting the concert, right in Gov. and Mrs. Deal’s backyard as Hall County natives.

“As residents of Hall County, Sandra and I have many memories in the Lake Lanier area.

We’re looking forward to the REACH for the Stars concert, which will be a great evening of fun and good music,” Gov. Deal said.

By Jane Harrison Taste buds rejoice! The Taste of Gainesville is back this year, promising gustatory delights under an autumn sky on Lake Lanier. After taking a break last year, the Lake Lanier Rowing Club will be spreading the table cloths Sept. 22 for dinner on the plaza at Lake Lanier Olympic Park.

Organizer Sharon Heard expects between 20-25 local restaurants will serve up specialties at one of the season’s most popular lake events. Corks will pop and beer taps flow as four area wine suppliers and one local taproom set up to pour.

“We’ve gotten a great response from vendors,” Heard said last month. The club’s marketing team pitched the event to restaurateurs as a taste test for new recipes and a way to create food memories to lure new diners. “It’s a big marketing opportunity for them,” Heard said.

The food truck craze, which rolls into the venue each month, has put more restaurateurs on the road, she added. More area restaurants have gone mobile,

making it easier to do food prep outside a traditional kitchen.

Participating restaurants signed up by mid-August promise palate-exciting variety, with entrees of barbecue, seafood, chicken, and burgers finished off with fudge, ice-cream, and other sweets. Lula restaurant At The Tracks, Dahlonega’s Fudge Factory, Hometown Grill from Flowery Branch, and Gainesville’s Bunch’s Burgers and Breakfasts are among the newcomers joining regulars like Gainesville Seafood Market, Johnny’s Barbecue, and O’Charley’s.

Vintners from CeNita Vineyards in Cleveland, Kaya in Dahlonega, Sweet Acre Farms in Lula and Gainesville wine shop Wine and Cheese will offer reds and whites for toasting. Tap masters from Tap It will open the spigots.

By Jane Harrison Fury on the water and fun, flavor, and fusion in the grandstands will ignite Lake Lanier Olympic Park Sept. 12-16 in a multi-nation contest unlike any other on the lake. The International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships will bring thousands of competitors and spectators to what organizers claim will be the largest international sporting event on Lanier since the 1996 Olympics.

About 1,000 athletes from 16 countries will sink paddles from long boats in rhythm to beating drums in fast and furious races in front of grandstands with cheering fans drenched in the aroma of exotic cuisine. A fiery opening ceremony Wednesday night will prelude three days of highly competitive racing, including what some describe as “NASCAR” style competition fueled by human strength, not motors.

The Lure of Dragon Boating

With its' over 2,000-year-old roots in Chinese lore, dragon boat racing is now a global phenomenon, with an estimated 72.5 million people paddling these crafts around the world, with a 22 percent increase in participation each year.

Dragon boat races originated in an ancient Chinese fishing village. As the story goes, a well-loved patriot poet named Qu Yuan who lived during the 4th century B.C. was banished by corrupt court officials. Unable to cope with his sorrow, Yuan drowned himself in the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen raced out in their boats in attempt to save him but arrived too late. In order to lure fish away from the body, they beat the water with their paddles and tossed rice dumplings into the river. The dragon boat races are a re-enactment of the attempt to save Qu Yuan and have become a major part of Chinese culture, representing patriotism and group integrity.

Years ago our friend Ray was retiring to the Caribbean. I was extremely jealous as he was a lot younger than me and had a bunch more money.

He and his wife bought a 36 foot sailboat and after several months outfitting it, they headed south. Now the Cruising Club of America holds a race each year from Norfolk VA to the Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda, and they decided to enter.

Since CCA’s main priority is safety, they require all participants to attend interminable safety lectures, have the proper safety equipment on board and undergo an inspection of their boat before being allowed to race.

Ray did just that and within an hour the keel was back where it should be with the bolts all properly tightened and locked down.

He was going to return the tools when he decided he should show his appreciation in some small way.

They had won a bottle of Tattinger’s champagne at a trivia contest the night before, so he took that. When he rowed back to his boat he had a strange look on his face. Hank asked what was wrong and he said the fellow had

just given him a strange look and said something that sounded like “Merde.”

A couple of months later I was reading in a sailing magazine that the Baron Rothschild (yes, THAT Baron Rothschild) was touring his vineyards in the Caribbean aboard his 175 foot yacht the “GITANA.” All I could think of is “Merde.”

Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

Will the rain ever go away?

All summer long, as we all know, we have seen deluge after deluge.

We’ve seen so much rain (we have a 13-inch surplus) that many of us now have lakefront property!

I called to get someone to trim some tree branches away from my house and the wait was five weeks! While many industries that rely on good weather to do business have taken a beating this summer, the tree cutting industry is doing more than very well.

Adding to the bizarreness of the weather this summer, we have seen two tornadoes in August. We don’t usually see twisters spin up without a land-falling tropical weather system. However we did have two from afternoon thunderstorms.

We had an EF-1 in Walton County and another smaller tornado in Banks County.

While it is not unprecedented to see a summer tornado, it is extremely rare.

The weather pattern causing this mayhem in the skies has been more like a winter pattern. We are seeing huge low pressure systems cutting across the northern Rocky Mountains and then migrating slowly across to the Great Lakes, exiting the United States from New England.

These lows have a counter-clockwise spin and begin tugging up plumes of deep tropical moisture as they move across the nation’s heartland. They basically create atmospheric rivers of tropical air over Georgia. Pinwheeling around the lows are

ill-defined weather disturbances that work in concert with the tropical Glenn air to produce incredible rainfall amounts. This Burns summer, it’s not been at all unusual to see storms Lanier produce rainfall of 2-3 Outlook inches per hour! Due to the slow movement of the cyclones, we see endless days of rain and storms. This pattern of above average rainfall will likely persist into September.

I know we’d all like to see some cooler temperatures with humidity levels below the tropical rainforest category we’ve been dealing with all summer. We will … eventually. What I don’t want to see is any landfalling tropical system move into the Southeast. The ground simply cannot tolerate that kind of rainfall. We will be in the peak of the hurricane season this month.

September 10th is the actual peak; thereafter, storms become less frequent, on average.

Autumn begins this month and the autumnal equinox is Saturday, September 22nd. The full Harvest Moon is two days later, on September 24th. I for one cannot wait for Ma Nature to crank down the heat and humidity. It won’t be too long until we begin to see hints of fall color. I am guessing, based on the amount of rain we’ve had this summer it will have a major impact on the fall color. The good news is, fall color usually lasts longer with wet summers. The bad news is the fall color is generally muted and dull. Regardless, I

A steerer and drummer bark commands and beat out a rhythm. Team USA, with about a quarter of its members affiliated with the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, is poised to win the Nation’s Cup awarded the top point getter.

The “Nascar” style 2,000 meter races are sure to stir the water big time. “Our 2,000 meter race is a blast!” said Jim O’Dell, LCKC paddler and Team USA Region Coach. “It is run in pursuit style; slowest qualifier starts first with next

Georgia DNR offers grant for top conservation teacher The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is offering a $1,000 grant to a third-, fourth- or fifth-grade public or private school teacher in the state who demonstrates exceptional energy and innovation in teaching life sciences. Science specialists covering those grade levels also may apply.

The “Conservation Teacher of the Year” grant is coordinated by the Wildlife Conservation Section of DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division. Funding is possible thanks to support from the Section’s friends group, The Environmental Resources Network (TERN).

Through education, research and management, Wildlife Con-

servation works to safeguard Georgia’s native diversity of wild animals, plants and their habitats, while also striving to increase public enjoyment of the outdoors.The purpose of the grant is to recognize and help an outstanding teacher who uses Georgia’s native wildlife, plants and habitats as the context for learning, according to Linda May, DNR environmental outreach coordinator.

Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run raises more than $200,000 for children’s charities

By Pamela A. Keene The numbers are in and they’re looking good. The 10th Annual Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run in mid-July raised more than $200,000 for area children’s charities.

As in years past, both poker hand winners donated their prize money back to Lanier Partners. Robert J. Knapp Jr. won the best Natural Poker Hand, using the cards he was dealt during the on-the-water event. Jarrett Gorlin won the best Improved Poker Hand, using additional cards that he purchased during the

event.

Other winners included: Best Pirate Crew, “Pirates Against Cancer,” Scott Peterson; Best Pirate Ship, “Noonie Toon,” Jay Howell; Best Overall Boat, “Bonds Voyage,” Thomas Bond.

The AVC Sound-off winners were Eric Shahan, 38-foot Fountain, first place; Scott Stinson, 42-foot Mystic, second place; Lynn Christopher, cruiser, third place.

“We are so appreciative to everyone who participated in this year’s Charity Poker Run,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier

Partners. “From the support of Lanier Islands and Margaritaville at Lanier Islands to our lead sponsor Premier Surfaces and all the others, it was again another fantastic year.”

Nearly 230 boats from the Southeast and across the country participated this year. The event benefits Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes and Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier.

What’s behind the door? Security

The security of a ship or boat at sea is vital to safety of the crew, passengers, cargo, and environment. Required initial training for commercial mariners is attending a class for Vessel Security Awareness.

The syllabus is offered in two versions, with or without duties.

Not meant to be a cover-all for this level of risk, it does however serve as a great introduction, making crewmembers aware of the need to perform the basics in this mainly collateral task. Although this subject may not have a direct influence or factor in to your experience on the lake, this type of preparation for security is applicable for everyone who ventures offshore.

One situation you can encounter even in this modern age of boating is piracy. This threat is ongoing, not just overseas off the coast of Africa or Asia, but can happen anywhere, and in reality it does. The training text and actual photo evidence in the course describes what to look for as in suspicious behaviors or actions and then reporting those observations to the authorities. There are also dedicated officers that perform this function on the vessel, the company, at the port, and with other agencies.

Different types of weapons used by pirates and terrorists are discussed in class, including WMDs as it pertains to the Maritime World. A large ship carrying millions of gallons of highly explosive fuel, chemicals, or natural gas is just an example of something that has to be protected. The fundamental premise of the training is: “See Something, Say

Something.” Essential information is professionally conveyed to the student but there are a few items that warrant further consideration and know-how that are not covered in the short one-day class. Once the crewmember reports onboard the ship, more related training, specific to the vessel layout, cargo, and voyage route is provided through more extensive personnel drills and exercises. Safety precautions and techniques are taught in an actual environment, a process which proves to be extremely helpful in honing the skills required.

Some of the counter-terrorism practices utilized by companies when a crew is under attack by pirates is to shelter in a safe place onboard the vessel. A compartment or room that is tightly secured through a single main door.

There is one very significant detail to highlight about this type of action and that is; the door is locked … from the OUTSIDE! Given the environment of going to sea, watertight doors on ships should be lock controlled from the outside to enable quick access for damage control, and

something very important called, space accountability.

That actually means that someone else has to unlock the door to allow for a safe exit. Some might consider this setting a good feature of being safeguarded from harm in this bunker like room made of strong steel plates welded together. It does however present a major problem which is: you will NOT be able to get out without assistance. Obviously, there are many reasons this could be hazardous such as, fire, flooding, and ship abandonment.

Acknowledging there is always risk involved on the water, there is a truly remarkable method using a small device that can keep you safely inside, yet exit on demand from behind a locked door. Invented by a professional Chief Engineering Officer, still serving in the maritime industry, it is a simple, cost effective design, easy to install and operate, called Safe Escape Lock. Reflections on the Missouri lake tragedy

The recent tragedy of an exmilitary duck boat on a Missouri lake could easily been prevented.

First and in my opinion, the captain, (who unfortunately was one of the 17 people who drowned when the boat was swamped), should have realized the weather was dangerous, with 65 mile per hour wind gusts. They should never have been on the water.

Second, a military duck boat is not designed for cruising. It was a military vehicle built to take troops to the front when bridges had not been built over rivers and creeks. They could fjord across them to the shore on the other side with 15 to 20 troops on board.

I also find it hard to believe it was licensed to take people on a cruise. There was bad judgment used along the way if that was the case. A duck boat does not have the sea-worthiness of a landing

By Pamela A. Keene ou don’t have to go far to experience worldclass restaurants, live theater, cutting-edge music, significant art, and sports. Just head down I-85 to Gwinnett County.

From a plethora of authentic Korean fare and hand-crafted pizzas to professional theater and music from bluegrass to pop, the towns of Gwinnett have every bit as much to offer, just a short drive away.

On a recent three-day media trip, the folks at Explore Gwinnett showed off many of the county’s assets. Although it was only about 15 minutes from my home in Flowery Branch, we stayed at Sonesta Suites off Pleasant Hill Road. It was a good central location for our adventure, close to I-85 and easy routes to the county’s municipalities.

Victoria Hawkins, marketing communications director at Explore Gwinnett and Jessica Whittingslow, marketing communications manager, and Mary Huff, media specialist with Laurie Rowe Communications created a non-stop schedule to sample local cuisine at three full meals each day, plus a couple of snacks. We didn’t go hungry.

We visited two to three destinations each morning, another two to three in the afternoon and

after a serious dinner, experienced the nightlife.

Restaurants provided the anchors for the trip. Uncle Jack’s Meat House in Duluth serves up tasty aged beef, from mammoth prime rib to burgers and seafood.

Modeled after its sister restaurant in Queens, New York, Uncle Jack’s hit all the right notes for the meat-lovers in our group. Try the Applewood Smoked Bacon appetizer served with house-made peanut butter and chipotle maple glaze, or the Long Island duck meatballs. They’ll whet your appetite for what’s to come – USDA choice chops and steaks, specialty sides for sharing including 5cheese macaroni and shredded crispy Brussel Sprouts.

We dined at 9292 Korean BBQ in Duluth, true Korean cuisine prepared at our table, Noble Fin Restaurant in Peachtree Corners, rated as one of Atlanta’s Top 40 Restaurants, and Local Republic in Lawrenceville, a gastropub with beer from many states, regions and countries.

O4W Pizza, a recent addition formerly located in Atlanta’s Fourth Ward, is known for Grandma’s Pie, Jersey style and recently featured in Bon Appetit magazine. It would be hard to choose a favorite because each has distinctive menus.

Baking Grounds in Buford on Lee Street tempts sweets-lovers with colorful cakes, pies, pastries and cookies and serves up a full breakfast and lunch menu. The Blue Rooster Bake Shop & Eatery in Lawrenceville makes chocolatedipped coconut macaroons to die for, plus breakfast and lunch.

Slow Pour Brewing Company in Lawrenceville stays busy with special events and its locally crafted brews. A corn hole contest was taking place during our visit.

Hope Springs Distillery in Lilburn hand-crafts Top Hat Vodka and the legendary absinthe.

They’re the only absinthe producers in the state.

Once you’re become a Gwinnett restaurant expert and picked your new favorites, check out the many activities for families, date nights or just because.

Georgia’s official transportation museum is located in Duluth.

Southeastern Railway Museum (www.train-museum.org) features historic Pullman cars, including the one used by President Warren G. Harding. Each December, the museum’s Polar Express Experience entertains kids dressed in pajamas to watch a special screening of the film with Santa.

The Hudgens Center for the Arts, endowed by developer Scott Hudgens, offers dozens of classes and 34,000 square feet of exhibit and education space; free admission.

In Buford, 15 artists at Tannery Row Artist Colony (www.tanneryrowartistcolony.net) occupy loft spaces with working studios and galleries. Some offer classes, lessons and artist talks.

Works for sale range from paintings and pottery to found art and sculpture. Studios are typically open on the second Saturday of each month and for special events and exhibition that are listed on the website.

Gwinnett is home to the second-largest professional theater in Georgia. The Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville (www.auroratheatre.com) currently has two theater spaces in a historic former church and produces a full season of plays, plus music, comedy and children’s plays. The Aurora is also known for its ghost tours each fall. Plans are for the organization to expand its facilities in the next couple of years to produce even more events.

The citizen scientists explored a northern section of Lake Lanier and conducted experiments aboard a floating classroom launched from River Forks Park in Hall County.

The Chota Princess II, a 40 foot catamaran that’s carried more than 50,000 students for aquatic discoveries, recently moved to a specially-made dock at the Hall County park. Fourth graders from Myer’s Elementary School joined staff from Elachee Nature Science Center, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Hall County government, U.S Army Corps of Engineers, and dock builder Marine Specialties for the ribbon-cutting at the new dock Aug. 21.

Afterward, they strapped on life jackets, strode onto the shiny new dock and stepped into the Lake Lanier Aquatic Studies Program aboard the Chota Princess II. The program has been a successful collaboration between Elachee and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper for 18 years. It serves K-12 schools throughout north Georgia, college and universities, church and civic organizations. Its operational costs are

funded in part by charitable donations. Until last March, the floating classroom docked at Aqualand Marina on the busy south end of the lake.

When the opportunity came for a change, Riverkeeper, which owns the boat, sought a new location. With a go-ahead from Hall County Parks & Leisure and the Corps, work began on a new dock last December.

“The project priorities were that it had to be kid-friendly and kid-accessible with wheel-chair access,” said Marine Specialties Inc. owner Tom Child. The dock, which he said is larger than his usual project on Lake Lanier, “had to be as level as possible so every child can get on and off the boat safely.” Project manager Kyle Davis said the design was tailored for the boat and the park.

It features two 50 foot docks and a double door boathouse lit by sky lights. There is currently no electricity on-site.

Jason Ulseth, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, described River Forks Park as a perfect place to host the program. “It has everything we need,” he said, including nearby restrooms, a pavilion for onshore education, and easy access for schools around north Georgia. Plus, it offers more privacy than the former Aqualand site, where the marina bustled with expensive leisure boats and tourists.

Park adds Hall County Parks and Leisure Services to this educational endeavor and gives this important program an excellent home base,” said Andrea Timpone, Elachee CEO/President.

She said the program connects children – many of whom have never been on a boat before – with the lake that provides water for much of Georgia. “Many of them, number one, didn’t know there was a lake here; number two, haven’t been on the lake; and number three, didn’t understand their drinking water comes from Lake Lanier.”

Departing from the dock after the ribbon-cutting, Chota Princess II captain Mike Tracy steered up the Chattahoochee River arm toward a quiet cove. En route, passengers spied two ospreys in a large pine, where one tore at a trophy striped bass. They viewed

With the strong and steady hot summer and early fall, most of our annuals, perennials and vegetables may look a bit peaked this month.

But you can stretch the growing season out a little more with some simple tips.

There’s still time to fertilize your annuals and perennials for a bit more bloom. For quick results, choose a water-soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Grow. It can be applied using a hose-end sprayer or by mixing it according to the package instructions into a watering can and applying to each plant.

You can also use a granular fertilizer, but be sure to water it in well. Good choices include Milorganite, a slow-release organic fertilizer, or any of the Espoma “tone” types, which are also organic. The company makes different formulas for particular situations. For instance, “Hollytone” is great for acid-loving plants, such as azaleas, camellias, evergreens, hollies and blueberries. “Plant-tone” for flowering plants and “Garden-tone” for vegetables both work well as all-purpose fertilizers. They’re safe to apply, they’re slow-release and provide plants with more nutrients

By Pamela A. Keene Lake Lanier Olympic Venue was hopping on August 25 as the Lake Lanier Association celebrated the 30th birthday of its signature event, Shore Sweep. More than 350 people, many who came by boat, showed up to enjoy food, water slides for kids, the Tap It Beer and Wine Truck and free food. The Fly Betty Band provided the musical backdrop for a day on the lake.

“We had several hundred people sign up to help with the main event on September 15,” said Bonny Putney with the Lake Lanier Association. “It really helped generate awareness, enthusiasm and more volunteers for our event in September.”

Prizes were awarded to various attendees, including Mike Nix, who showed up in the oldest Tshirt, from the 1995 event.

Putney said that the group is still soliciting volunteers for the mid-September event, from individuals to help at the 11 designated collection points to people with boats to assist on the water.

She said they are also specifically looking for someone to bring a bobcat to the Big Creek location on September 15 to help with moving larger objects. Those interested in volunteering can report to a designated location the morning of the event.

Last month, we looked at kitchen design and remodeling trends, but another popular area to remodel right now are bathrooms; specifically, master bathrooms.

The request I get the most from clients looking to remodel their bathroom is that they want their master bath to feel like a spa.

What does that mean? They want large, luxurious showers, updated fixtures and lighting, transitional or modern style and, most importantly, an open, clean feel. Technology is also being integrated into the master bathroom more and more, and many people are planning ahead and redesigning their bathroom to allow for comfort and aging in place.

First, let’s discuss showers.

Many people are taking their oversized garden tubs or outdated jetted tubs out of the master bath and replacing them with a large, tiled shower. gether, unless you’re going ultramodern). White has a clean, classic feel that never seems to go out of style. For the master bath, you can create a timeless look with clean lines, simple design, and classic, neutral colors. And don’t be afraid to bring in some warmth with wood or tile accents. Also think about bringing in your personality through towel colors, accessories, or trendy lights and plumbing fixtures, as these items can be changed out easily when you tire of them. Most importantly, if you’re thinking about a master bath remodel, look for an experienced designer or remodeler to help with planning the perfect, personalized space.

New special master named in Fla. vs Ga. water rights battle 52 LAKESIDE

By Jane Harrison The federal judge appointed as special master to oversee a water rights battle between Florida and Georgia prides himself for timely case management. That quality, and his compensation through the federal payroll, may save the two states some bucks in the next round of the legal showdown that began in 2013.

Judge Paul J. Kelly, Jr., 26year judge on the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Santa Fe, NM, accepted the Supreme Court’s call to replace Ralph Lancaster, Jr. who started evidentiary proceedings in Oct. 2014. The court in July remanded Lancaster’s recommendations and asked for answers to specific questions. It replaced Lancaster last month, assigning Kelly some heavy homework in the complex case piled with millions of pages of evidence.

The original case grew after the 2012 drought dropped levels on the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, and Flint river system that flows from north Georgia to the Florida panhandle. Florida accused Georgia of hoarding water and causing ecological and economic hardship downstream, where Apalachicola oyster fisheries dried up. The lawsuit outcome holds high stakes for Lake Lanier, the northernmost and largest reservoir on the ACF. Florida seeks to limit Georgia

water use in hopes of increasing the flow downstream.

U.S. Justices gave no reason for taking Lancaster off the case, but legal experts speculate it was to save the states money. “My suspicion is it is financial,” said Lara Fowler, Assistant Director of the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment. The senior lecturer and water law specialist cited another water conflict, Texas v. New Mexico and Colorado, in which the court abruptly named a senior federal judge special master in April.

Similar to the Southeastern case, that dispute racked up about half a million dollars for a special master who worked for a private firm. Florida and Georgia split the bill for Lancaster, a prominent Maine attorney and veteran special master, who volunteered to take less than customary compensation. His pay came to just a fragment of the estimated $40 million each state has spent on the case so far.

Chris Manganiello, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Water Policy Director, wondered whether the sudden change will actually save the states money. “On the one hand as the case moves forward it should be cheaper because Kelly will operate on an established federal salary. On the other

“We are left to hope we will spend less than the approximately $10 million a year that has been spent since 2011,” he continued.

Florida conservationists argue that money their state’s spending to fight Georgia for more water could rebuild Apalachicola’s oyster fishery infrastructure.

Georgia at one time paid 40 full time attorneys to sift through evidence that surfaced from city hall basements, farmers’ irrigation logs, hydrologists’ research and megabytes of data.

Fowler added that the states likely feel “relieved they are not paying in legal fees what they were shelling out for the (previous) special master;” however, “they may be tromping out to New Mexico for another trial.”

She alluded to the four weeks states’ legal teams spent in a Portland, Maine courtroom for Lancaster’s evidentiary hearing in winter 2016.

Located just 35 miles northeast of Atlanta, the lake offers some of the finest camping opportunities in the South. The Corps operates 7 campgrounds at Lake Lanier. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m.

Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks.

Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531.

Day Use Fees Day use fees are charged at some park areas which have boat ramps or beach areas. Many weekends in the days prior to super highways, I would drive up old US 441 to the tiny mountain town of Clayton, Ga. before hitting the backroads in search of huge trout in a multitude of productive Rabun County streams. Just the trip to Clayton back then would take several hours, but times have changed.

Even if you abide by the speed limits, Atlanta residents can use I985 and Highway 365 to Clayton in less than two hours and discover a place that offers great wines, tasty food, affordable lodging and a picturesque golf course! This perfect mountain venue is Kingwood Country Club and Resort (www.kingwoodresort.com) on Highway 76 East only two miles from downtown Clayton.

Meticulously sculpted into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Kingwood offers fine and casual dining prepared by an interesting chef named Gus, an immaculate full-service spa, plenty of meeting facilities, a gorgeous swimming and picnic area, tennis courts and a walking trail to the beautiful Laurel Falls. This was not my first visit to Kingwood Country Club and Resort, and it brought back special memories. I was first introduced to this gorgeous golf course when it was still private by the late Mr. Dillard of the famous Dillard House Restaurant north of Clayton. Many years later, I came to the resort with my family to ring in the New Year while listening to great music performed by a friend, so I have a long connection to this fabulous property.

Lancaster not retired The Supreme Court’s replacement of Ralph Lancaster, Jr. as special master caused speculation about whether the 88-year-old was retiring from practicing law. Lancaster declined comment, but the managing partner at Pierce Atwood LLP affirmed Lancaster “remains of counsel to our firm.”

David Barry, partner, would not comment about Lancaster’s dismissal by the court or his performance as special master.

“Mr. Lancaster was deeply honored to serve as Special Master in this case and in the three prior original jurisdiction cases in which he was appointed Special Master by the U.S. Supreme Court over the past three decades,” he said by email.
