ABOUT ME My name is Pham Thi Phuong Nhung. I was born in Pleiku - a highland city in Viet Nam in 1992. The idea to become an architect came to me when I was 4 years old. 17 years later, I hold a Barchelor of Architecture from Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture (UAH) where I received the Nam Long Prize for top 15 highest Graduation Thesis scores in 2015. My target is to become a Design Manager 10 years later. My architecture designs are based on 3 main points: - Each building - very large or so tiny one - should tell a story. - The natural beauty - the beauty comes purely from the spaces of the buildings. - The natural designing process - the relationship between human and buildings - buildings and surrounding.

The story behind this project comes from my observation and searious thinking about my hometown - Pleiku City for many years. Having the similar climate as well as topography and landscape resource with Da Lat City is an advantage for this city to develop an effective environment for human to live and relax. However, as a consequent of industrialization, we can hardly find a building characteristic which adapts to surroundings. But after all, Pleiku is still a young city, so architecture and urban design here has a chance to become better and better, at least like Da Lat used to be. Therefore, I decided to start this project to demonstrate the potential of Pleiku city as well as my interest and abilities in housing design.

THE DESIGN

Nature respect The design of the whole development come from my strong belief: every building should be there for a reason. It should respect the nature and make the nature become more and more beautiful. The nature and the building support each other, become friend with each other and make people who live there realize the important of both building and nature.

Rhythm Buildings heights were put into a rhythm to make them reflect the landscape - which is the feature of highland like Pleiku city. By this, buildings do not defense nature, they combine with nature and become a part of nature

Landscape is not the exception. the artifact landscape should be blended into the nature, like a sculpture which comes from nature the son of nature.

As Pleiku city has a very severe weather with a long term rainning season every year, I decide to add a slide doors system with horizontal louvers on the boundary line of the yard. As the result, people can enjoy the weather on rainy days by opening the main doors, and close the louver ones. It also helps people in the very cold season by working like a buffer to reduce wind and gain heat for inside space.

The bridge between human and nature In higher detail and functional level, I want to focus on the relationship between human, building, and nature. The building should be something that connects people with natural elements.

MIX USE SUNLIGHT TOWER RENOVATION PROPOSAL LOCATION: DISTRICT 1 - HCMC

THE STORY This is my second proposal for this building. The first one, is a modern, simple and functional concept that looks like another highrise in HCMC. And feedback from our client was that “It’s nice, but we want something more than that, something can tell the visitors a story“. It is the time that I have to stop sketching, and start thinking about that existing structure (the structure was already built in this case) and asked myself several of questions, to find a solution, find something that just belongs to this building. And I found that the land lot where it is standing is the characteristic that can make it become different. Being hided behind some townhouses, this building is back to its own world. It is more quiet than those which are exposed to the street.

THE DESIGN

Memories raising I start to develope the idea about the “Memories” of Sai Gon with the vaults. I bring the old element of Sai Gon colonial architecture in a contemporary way, accompanied with the performance of modern louvers. By doing this, the building was mixed between the old and the new, make people to feel something “familiar” but so “clean, simple and modern”. Sensitive elements In more detail scale, the highlight feature is the entrance. Looking from the street, it is just a vault with a tree next to it. It is a very simple concrete vault without any decorative elements added. This kind of abstract bring people the feeling of quiet and peaceful. It attract the people who want to run away from the crazy of urban life.

MASTERS PLAN WORKS

LOCATION: DONG NAI PROVINCE

This masterplan was once approved by Dong Nai Government before, however, after years, our client want to change the previous proposal to another better option. They want it to be more comfortable, dynamic to become a kind of “resort residential region”. Immediately, I remembered about what I learnt before in university the “Cluster neighborhood residential planning. This kind of planning is not only greener, more private and more luxury, but also itself present the “Natural process”.

Cluster concept Our main idea was very clear - providing the cluster planning for all the villa, so each of them has its own green view and be surrounded by tree. Climate adaption Besides, the main entrances of most of villas (80%) and all townhouses were arranged to face the North and South, so that they can have the best sunshades and wind. Central green - natural process In the middle of the whole development, is the central park - which become the public area for everyone. Naturally, it was formed by the spaces between buildings, and has a very natural shape.

This project was come suddenly from one of my friends. She is a young girl who is working in a very dynamic environment - a start up bussiness world. She asked me to make a proposal for her room in our home town - Pleiku city. When I asked her about the requirement, she told me that, she read the book “The Fountainhead before, and want me to do anything that I think suitable for her on my own. After some days thinking about this girl, I end up with this design, which can be described by 3 features: - Bright - Active - Functional
