Message from the SAFAD Chairpersons

Throughout time, Art and Architecture have been the most distinct evidence of the development of humanity. Architecture has persisted as the most important reflection of culture and history. Its role in society is of great significance. Designers are challenged to understand and translate the needs of the client. The translation of the client’s vision coupled with the designers’ response to the opportunity presented can influence the behavior of society in general. We produce graduates who first and foremost can efficiently practice their chosen profession in this country. They will be more prepared to respond to local and international demands. The upcoming freshmen should expect a very challenging life at school. Every subject is important; therefore, they should not neglect any of it. The new curriculum is designed to encourage coordination among faculty members through enabling the students to balance their time and resources. They must persevere and be diligent to succeed. It will also be an advantage if they have a stable support system like their family and friends. Margret Rosario, FUAP, MTE Architecture Chairperson

The arts and design are powerful vehicles for culture, education, entertainment and promotion. They provide visual sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. In the Philippine Tertiary Education, “Fine Arts and Design” refers to a wide range of disciplines defined by the pursuit of aesthetic engagement conveyed creatively through different visualbased media. In accordance to the provisions of Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Fine Arts and Design Program of the University of San Carlos cultivates students who are grounded in the basic tools and techniques of visual concepts to step into powerful roles as responsible and committed individuals to enrich culture, to elevate creative industries and to the develop the heart of community service. The Fine Arts and Design Program’s beautiful learning environment is one that is inspiring, nurturing and collaborative. The students begin their educational experience with engaging curriculum in Advertising Arts, Cinema, Fashion Design and Painting that encourage them to push their limits of creative expression, sharpen their problem-solving skills to

2 come up with design solutions, and develop inspired art and design projects that positively and effectively address society’s needs. Creative inspiration and professional preparation flourish in all classrooms, studio laboratories, other facilities, and support services where faculty mentors are guided with the outcome-based and learner-centered approach to instruction. They guide students to deepen and enrich their passion in art production with research and to adopt efficient art production processes as an opportunity for community service. For upcoming freshmen, make Fine Arts and Design your starting point for professional art practice. There are many opportunities of creative outputs in both local and global sectors. The program prepares talented students to thrive in the professional realm, emphasizing aesthetic pursuits to develop the highest level of creativity, critical thinking, design innovation and visual communication skills. The Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Cinema (BFA Cinema) is an academic program at SAFAD offered since AY 2011 – 2012. Cinema is arguably the most influential art form and one of the biggest industries in the world. This program is designed to teach the next generation of screen writers, editors, producers, cinematographers and sound professionals. It contains grass-roots of producing and low budget filmmaking. A thorough appreciation of cinema history, theory and artistry is also emphasized in the program. In our view, cinema is entertainment, as well as art. All students will complete a feature length narrative screenplay and a thesis film project in their Senior Year.

Considered as the core of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Painting (BFA Painting) focuses on special skills training in painting. The program introduces plural practices in art while placing an important role of academic studies like Art Theory and Humanities. Aside from providing them with the knowledge, skills and proficiency in developing their painting abilities, students also learn other skills in photography, illustration, cartooning and other elective advertising arts.

WHY BS ARCHITECTURE?

WHY BS INTERIOR DESIGN?

WHY BS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE?

I was a child amused by art. I would draw buildings and houses in their most abstract state. I still remember when I first used Adobe Photoshop at an early age on my brother’s laptop; I was curious about how it works, so I asked my brother to teach me. Architecture was the call I’ve been looking for since I was a child and I am happy that I found what I was driven and passionate for.

I initially took up architecture and shifted to Interior Design because of my enthusiasm for aesthetic spaces but through USC’s Interior Design Program, I experienced a paradigm shift in my understanding of what interior design is. Interior Design gives me the ability to transform and redefine experiences enclosed within a space. This course intensively develops my thinking, designing and crafting skills because of OBE (Output-Based Education) approach.

I enrolled in Landscape Architecture with the help of a faculty member who presented me the profession. There are only few Landscape Architects in the Philippines with whom I can compete. Foreign tourists and even locals appreciate landscapes more than buildings and structures.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN SAFAD I received my first achievement during my second year when I was able to garner the third place in the Architectural Model Making Competition and was recognized during the Design Awards that year. I also got the first, second, and fourth places during the same annual recognition during my third year. Seeing my works being displayed and recognized motivates me to work harder each and every day. Exchange student in University of Pécs, Hungary and member of USC-SAFAD Team for Philippine Pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale (2018).

ACHIEVEMENTS IN SAFAD Delegate of USC at AIDIA International Student Workshop in Changchun, China, working for Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation, Inc. and under IDr. Ryan Mantuhac for apprenticeship, and member of the organizing team for Cebu Design Week. Participation in both local and international competitions such as Robinson’s Guitar Design Competition and JIPA’s (Japan Federation of Interior Planner’s Association) Interior Planning Competition.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN SAFAD Bronze Award in Design Awards 2016. Auditor for the Landscape Architecture school organization – USC Circle of Landscape Architecture Students (USCCLAS) in 2017. Exchange student at a workshop in Fuji Women’s University in Sapporo, Japan. Gold Award in Design Awards 2018. President of USCCLAS.

WHY BFA - ADVERTISING ARTS? I chose the Advertising Arts program because it’s the perfect marriage between marketing and art. The course provides a large spectrum of subjects like photography, video arts, copywriting, animation and art direction. I chose SAFAD because of the culture, the creativity, and the people. For my future plans, I want to do more for events that help showcase Cebuano culture, as well as work in a magazine or a publication as a regular contributor for feature articles and help our family business. ACHIEVEMENTS IN SAFAD I’ve written for Lantawan and helped get more artists to showcase their works in the gallery. I’ve found myself a vocal and active seat in the SAFAD council as the President of the Advertising Arts Association while maintaining a good Grade Point Average all throughout.

WHY BFA - FASHION DESIGN? A Fashion Design is a program tackles the art of designing beautiful clothing and fashion accessories, trend forecasting, visual merchandising, Public Relations, and more. This program looks at the work of famous fashion designers over the centuries and the culture of time to show students how great fashion has become. I know I’ve always wanted to work in the fashion industry and that is why I got here in the first place. ACHIEVEMENTS IN SAFAD At this SAFAD program fashion shows involve each student. This is where we showcase the remarkable creativity of student artists and fashion designers. During this year’s “Transcendence Graduation Fashion Show” at Radisson Blu Hotel I was awarded Best in Thesis – Silver Awardee. Since garment designs need a cooperation of several people, I do know that I have to thank to so many people for supporting me.

WHY BFA - CINEMA?

WHY BFA - PAINTING?

BFA Cinema is my calling. There is so much work to revive the Cebuano Cinema. I want to contribute to it. I realized that I cannot do this just from a YouTube tutorial. Our program teaches us not only technicalities of the equipment but also the back story of filmmaking. Filmmaking is a process. What prepares us for this process is a quality university education. Theories and deep, relevant professional information play an important role here. Key differences between professional filmmakers and amateurs call for the intensive study which USC-SAFAD offers.

I was introduced to the great painter Juan Luna when I was younger. I knew about him but not in detail. When I learned that his painting Spollarium was the catalyst for the Philippine Revolution, I understood that I had chosen the right path.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN SAFAD I bagged the first place of two of the four categories during SunStar’s photo contest last 2016. I was able to work as a brand ambassador for local and foreign companies like Daniel Wellington, Spotify Asia, and Huawei Mobile Philippines.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN SAFAD My paintings were awarded during Pintal and Cristobal Espina Arts Awards (2014, 2015, 2017). On a national level, back in 2014 I was a semifinalist (oil category) in Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) painting competition and a national finalist in 2018 in the ‘watermedia on paper’ category.

Background for SAFAD

I have developed my love for architecture since grade school. I was so fond of observing landscape, structures and especially buildings. With our drafting class in high school, I realized that my interest for designing buildings and structures was my passion.

When I was in gradeschool, I was already fond of drawing. When the time comes, I would like to take up Architecture. My teacher told me that many architects nowadays build structures only for the sake of business and don’t mind how it affects others. I want to be a different architect. I want to create a building that helps people, conveys purpose, and narrates a story.

Favorite Building in Cebu

The building that amazes me most is the SM Seaside Mall which shows modern buildings can rise in Cebu. The architecture is unique. This circular structure is just a few miles away from the congested city. This is the first roof deck facility with a garden landscape which is open to the public. SM Seaside faces the sea and its back the mountains. Ayala terraces is also on my list, as I like the aesthetic of a countryside feel in the middle of a bustling and busy city.

How does your School Prepare you for a Creative Program? I participated in a contest of making a render of Casa Gorordo Museum. I did a crayon etching piece of Casa Gorordo that uses the scraping technique and it won Second Prize. I did not expect this since I thought it was not not good enough. I came to realize that I should not belittle myself and compare my piece with others because my piece was unique.

My passion for architecture started in high school. Later, my parents gave me two options, architecture or a medical course. According to them, the medical field would give me a stable job compared to architecture. Later on, they told me that I could still chose from both. I then searched about how the architecture industry works and I was amazed. My passion for it grew more. I idolize Zaha Hadid who incorporated the concept of curves on buildings. I then had gained newfound desire to pursue architecture as my field.

At first, I was interested in medicine due to my mother’s influence, but I quickly found my interest in arts and design. Later, I had realized that I am more interested in designing and building unique structures as compared to medicine.

How does your School Prepare you for a Creative Program? Last year, I had joined the Science Art Scout club which is all about painting. My first painting figure was an owl. I am also interested in pop-up art.

How does your School Prepare you for a Creative Program? I make ordinary things extraordinarily. Last year, I was part of a production of our Campus’ Romeo and Juliet play entitled “The Mask” in which I manually created the materials used in the play. I also experienced creating artworks in our EPE class in which I used a bleach bottle and had turned it into a chair.

One of my favorite local buildings is the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. It’s a very old church from the Spanish period that we can preserve for the future. The church’s pillars and interior show a deep spirituality. The altar is historical and an important part of Cebu’s culture.

Ever since I was young, I loved to play games like The Sims to build homes. I love the art of architecture and I plan to help the poor by designing them homes.

I never thought that my little gestures in art when I was young would nurture my passion for architecture. In my grade school years, my classmates and I were discussing what we would like to become in the future. That’s when I realized that I want to become an architect. The buildings and structures from other countries had inspired me a lot and my goal is to someday design one.

When I was young, I was already interested in designing houses, structures, and pools.

Medicine was my top priority. however my father, who is an engineer, encouraged me to be an architect as his dream was to become an architect. In my grade school years, my supportive father had trained me to use SketchUp which was fun to learn.

How does your School Prepare you for a Creative Program?

I am fascinated by Ayala Mall because of the curvature of the building. I am also amused by deisgn of Ayala Terraces which has a park.

I learned drafting when I was in Junior High. Few of the things I had done during the class were designing architectural structures like residences and doing geometrical drawings.

Favorite Building in Cebu I like historical structures like those in Carcar Cebu and the Yap-San Diego Museum.

How does your School Prepare you for a Creative Program? I learned about drafting in our class in Junior High. During the class, we drew architectural sketches like residences and creating geometrical drawings.

Favorite Building in Cebu

I became interested in architecture because I come from a family of architects, engineers, and bank managers. My biggest inspiration is my grandfather who is an architect, electrical engineer, and mechanical engineer.

Favorite Building in Cebu My favorite building is the Ayala Center Cebu because of how the structure looks elegant, especially the new wing which is like a park that people enjoy.

Favorite Building in Cebu I like modern buildings like the newly constructed SM Seaside Mall. I am amazed by how the structure looks which is not common in Cebu.
