Mott MacDonald response to UK Government’s Energy Security Strategy

“We welcome the renewed political focus on energy and acknowledgment of the need to tackle the challenges of energy security and the climate crisis. The drive to netzero must remain at the heart of the government’s energy policy, along with affordability.

With our industry partners we have been championing the creation of a visibly independent energy body charged with taking a systemwide view. We think that the future system operator has the potential to bring a stepchange in energy thinking in the UK.

News that the government will support eight new nuclear reactors is a positive statement of intent that will help to give the nuclear industry the confidence necessary to invest in the developing skills and capability. We also welcome the ongoing commitment to offshore wind and stepping up ambition for hydrogen. We see these plans as a positive step towards decarbonising the UK power system by 2035, alongside other, much-needed, measures such as improved efficiency, demand side management and storage, digitalisation and community level solutions.”
