We have a selection of high quality events, often showcasing local talent, and covering dance, drama, film, literature, music, and poetry. Saturday 17 July Rockin’ Rhymes Arranged and directed by Caz Rawlinson, this is a sing along concert for all ages, featuring nursery rhymes performed in different styles (rock, samba, funk, swing etc.), a professional jazz quartet, and children from Davies Lane and Dawlish Primary Schools.
The Cult with No Name presents ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ Released in 1920, and directed by Robert Wiene, the German expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari remains one of the most influential silent films of all time. Cult With No Name’s compelling soundtrack instantly creates evocative moods, each piece seamlessly drifting and merging into the next, along a journey that takes in warm ambience, popular song, distortion, and vast, expansive futurist soundscapes. Saturday 17 July The Mojave Collective plus support The Mojave‘s blend of country, Scouse-a-billy rock hits you like a combined slug from Messrs Jack Daniels and Samuel Colt. One review of the band said they “absorb, roll, smoke and then stomp on the doobie of all that is great in the Anglo – American tradition”. Damn straight. The News From Nowhere Club lecture: Libby Horner talks on Frank Brangwyn Frank Brangwyn (1867 – 1956) was arguably the first British artist to gain an international reputation and certainly the first living artist to be honoured with a retrospective at the Royal Academy. He worked briefly for William Morris, and received commissions from Siegfried Bing and Tiffany. Quite apart from his murals which include the British Empire Panels at Swansea, he painted, was an accomplished draughtsman, lithographer and woodcutter, a graphic artist and book illustrator, an innovative etcher, and also designed everything from architecture to jewellery. Monday 19 July Leytonstone Library Playreading Group presents ‘Hobson’s Choice’ Harold Brighouse‘s comedy Hobson’s Choice, set in Salford in the 1880s, is a classic Lancashire play, funny and honest, which has remained very popular down through the decades. London Improvisers Orchestra London Improvisers Orchestra is one of the most exciting groups currently working in British music. Its 35 or so members have created that remarkable thing, a contemporary big band capable of free improvisation. Tuesday 20 July Kate Tempest and the Sound of Rum Described by Scroobius Pip as “the highlight of my listening year” it’s not difficult to see why Kate Tempest is currently hotter than hot. Not bad considering she started out performing her gritty, rap-rhymes at squat parties. Now audiences across the country have the chance to hear her on a nationwide tour, she has just released her first poetry album with record company Pure Groove, and her band, Sound of Rum, have recently signed a record deal. Omar Puente and his Cuban Band Tonight we get in the Cuban groove with singer and violinist Omar Puente, and we defy anyone to sit still for long. Omar plays all over Europe, the USA, and Africa with such musicians as Tito Puente, Jools Holland and Courtney Pine, and teaches in the UK and Cuba. Wednesday 21 July Sheila Collings talks on ‘How To Get On Telly’ Local thespian Sheila Collings, veteran of Eastenders, Last of the Summer Wine and numerous other popular shows, and most recently a “knitting nana” in the Shreddies breakfast cereal adverts, casts a humorous eye over a long television career. The Leytonstone Film Club presents ‘Sparrows Can’t Sing’ Joan Littlewood‘s 1963 film Sparrows Can’t Sing provides a fascinating and raw insight into East End life on the cusp of change, simultaneously looking back to the war, and forward to the Swinging Sixties. Written in 1895, An Ideal Husband was considered by Wilde to be his best play, and its themes of the worship of wealth and standards in political life are as relevant today as ever. And the character of Lord Goring is one of Wilde’s greatest creations – a supremely “trivial” and witty fop who in the end proves far wiser than the supposedly more responsible and respectable characters around him.
