Poppin’ Planets By Evelyn Ivey
The Sun Without a doubt, the largest object in our solar system is the sun. The temperature is 15.6 million degrees. It contains more than 99.8% of the total mass of the Solar System.
Mercury Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Mercury is the eighth largest planet. Mercury has now been visited by two spacecrafts.
Venus Venus is too hot for rain. Venus has no moons. Venus has clouds, but not like the Earth’s cloud. They have sulfuric acid and not water.
Earth We live on Earth. Most of the mass of the Earth is in the mantle. The Earth is the densest major body in the solar system.
Mars Mars is much smaller than Earth. The surface of Mars is about the same as the surface of Earth. The orbit of Mars goes just inside the asteroid belt. Mars really does have water, but it’s under the surface in the form of ice.
Jupiter Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. Jupiter the largest planet. Jupiter was first visited by Pioneer 10 in 1973.
Saturn Saturn is a gas planet. Saturn is made of things that are lighter than water. Saturn's rings are made up mostly of ice water.
Uranus Uranus is a giant gas planet. Uranus has been visited by only one spacecraft. Uranus looks like it’s on its side right-side up.
Neptune Neptune is made up of many kinds of ice and rock. Neptune was visited once and everything that’s known about it comes from that visit. Neptune has 8 moons that we know of.
Bye-Bye Pluto Pluto is a dwarf planet. Pluto has one moon. A space craft has not landed on Pluto.
