MUSEO MARITTIMO ALL’ARSENALE VENEZIA WORKSHOP 2004 prof. Guillermo Vazquez Consuegra

The project is a long line that extends from the edge of the fondamenta, in the water/earth limit. The same limit that tries to disappear in the continuity of the spaces that are organized in a circular walk through the museum. The idea originates from the discovery of a galley, old ship found far off San Marco in Boccalama in 2004. The building is meant to celebrate this retrieval because it is the testimony of the Arsenale’s past history, site where it was probably built. The Arsenale is going to be transformed in a maritime museum that honors this meaningful area. The entrance is placed towards the corderie and from here it takes form from the land to the water through a sort of plate that anchors it to the

ground and to the octagonal base of the crane. From here a slow travel to the discovery of the galley begins, in fact a sequence of views and prospective allows the visitor to enjoy this important finding. The structure is a septum that extends all the way to the end of the floor in water. The conference room is set at a higher level to be free from the rest of the building. Concrete for the septum and steel for the shell are the material chosen. The lighting is designed with the target of leaving the perception of the walls as hanging elements. The light is reflected by the water towards the ceiling of the galley room creating great lights games and a sense of suspension.

A long covered walk joins the different units and extends in a second body house other functions as the library, meeting rooms, canteen, doctor’s offices and infirmary. A symbolic element is placed in the centre of the area and it is built in wood: the church. Ideas competition in San Marino. The project aims to the requalification of an external walk that connects different historical buildings, among them there is an old theatre, two new theatres developed from an old quarry and the market square.

The project for the city of Marostica, near Vicenza, the city of Palladio, is one of the most stimulating experiences of my studies and it allowed me to deepen a multiplicity of skills. The area is near the ancient medieval walls, towards the west entrance and it comprises a portion of the east land occupied by the dismissed buildings of the popular Azzolin, ceramic factory. The external area is characterized by a public parking that is going to be moved north, in a green area so to free the old fortification. Close to the factory there is the hospital and another factory, Vimar. These two buildings are going to be transformed in commercial and residential blocks. The concept is a green park, a sort of line that

soaks in the area of the hospital. Near this volume a new residence for old people is placed to create a dialogue of functions with a strong connection. The city hall is enlarged through the addition of a new object that hosts the auditorium. As a result, the strip of land that goes from the wall to the city limit is a green tongue in which stores, houses and public offices defines its edge and generate a new prospective. This project of urban regeneration is realized through a system of trees and is open to the main view in a creative sequence of colors and volumes.

PROGETTO PER LA NUOVA SEDE DELL’UNIVERSITA’ IUAV SAN BASILIO venezia PROGETTAZIONE ARCHITETTONICA E URBANA prof. Martino Doimo

The project is located on the terrain of the Magazzini Frigoriferi in the area of San Basilio in Venice. This area was the site of a famous competition for the new IUAV headquarters, won by the architect Miralles but or many reasons it was never built. The complex has at the base level public spaces while the auditorium is a free single volume, long and thin, freely laid over a stone basement. It seats 500 people and it can be divided into two smaller rooms with a sliding floor that can create two separated units. This solution originates from the idea of thin and gentle volumes that offer a great fluidity when all the units are open and connected to each other. The entrance faces the other western Santa Marta building to which it is linked through a new bridge. The

entrance is divided into two separated paths: one leads to the auditorium and the open spaces and one towards the smaller room. The whole volume has a clay shell: defined elements are fixed to a steel understructure that allows the air to maintain a great heating control inside the building in a ventilate façade. The south façade fronts the Giudecca canal and it is wide open: it allows the view of the lagoon but at the same time it is protected by the solar beam with a system of brise soleil. A sort of big glass eye seems to underline the double height of the exposition. In contrast to this solution the other important object represented by the auditorium is rotated compared to the eastern Ligabue building and it is all metal coated.

PUBLIC SQUARE - SWIMMINGPOOL AND BEACH ZATTTERE venezia WORKSHOP 2006 proff. Durish+Nolli

The project stands in the area of San Basilio in the Fondamenta delle Zattere and is bound to be a public place. It has a long form that faces the Giudecca Island where important buildings as Mulino Stucky and Redentor’s Church offer a spectacular view. The Giudecca canal is well travelled in fact all the routes of water buses cross together with the little ships and the big boats that go to the harbor. The Fondamenta is characterized by a double condition: on one hand there is a frenetic movement of who quickly crosses the area and on the other hand the orientation towards the sun gives the perfect condition for a lighted and windy coast spot. The area has become the ideal stop for the tourist who wants to rest after a long walk or for the local who wants to

sunbathe always enjoying a magnificent view. The project aims to give a public urban beach in an historical city: sun is always guaranteed, shadow is supplied by the trees, clean and fresh water can be found in the long swimming pool and the bar gives the opportunity to meet new people. The shape is of a raft and it replaces the concrete slab that actually occupies the coast. This brutal addition is ideally hollowed to become a pool. This basin is placed exactly at the edge of the shape and it allows to face the landscape while swimming, relaxing or resting in the lounge chair on the other side of the platform under the shade of white tents. In the underwater part there is a night club in which a touching game of light enriches the inner spaces.

CENTRO DI RICERCA E SVILUPPO IDEE TRONCHETTO venezia LABORATORIO DI PROGETTAZIONE 2 prof. Giuseppe Longhi, Sergio Pascolo e Luigi Schibuola

Venice can be considered a huge university campus due to the constricted dimension of the city that permits quick movements of people back and forth different urban spaces. This characteristic makes Venice the perfect city to host educational functions, laboratories and research centers. Exactly all these features, combined with the desire of adding a new area to be destined to these activities near Cà Foscari and Iuav, are the reasons why this is the good site for a project of renovation. The research centre is meant to be a creative environment in which the inputs of all the disciplineds involved are perfectly integrated and allows the generation of new ideas and new studies thanks to the constant interaction of the community members. In this perspective there

are rooms for teachers, laboratories but also an auditorium, a library and a screening room. The most advanced technology allows a rapid communication between all the students and the teachers. At the same time the development of concept and the immediate diffusion of new ideas are easy and quick in an intense working experience. The project is a strip that raises from the land creating the space of the main hall. It faces the lagoon and it is open with a greenhouse made of semi-transparent solar panels. This façade is the device that embodies the energetic efficiency that the whole building wants to represent. A green sloped roof contributes to create an urban park and it is crossed by a second volume in which there is room for the students and their private studies.

Views, overlooks, stones, vegetation and different floors are the main elements of the project. These are the key, the spur and the hint that the site suggested at first sight because those are the elements that most characterize it. The strategy of the settlement originates from a path that leads to the top of the hill where the site is placed. This path contains a series of themes, each one is an occasion of remark: the project is defined by two volumes, two lines, one that rotates compared to the other and generates the big square from which it is possible to look towards Riva, towards the Lake Garda and towards the town of Campo. The central square testifies the two elements that most of all characterize the site: stones and olives trees. It seems that it has its origins in

a subtraction that leaves in the middle the rock of the mountain, a sort of quarry interrupted by some trees. The buildings follow the north-south axis and offer the main facade to the west, where the lake is the breathtaking background of each apartment. Every unit has big openings and tries to find a relation with the sky with an inner patio that brings light to the rooms but at the same time it creates the right ventilation for a climate sensitive design. Some elements with collective services complete the system: a supermarket, a bar, a laundry and in particular a library that is oriented toward Campo that will be destined to a colony of artists.

MUSEO DELLA LAGUNA DI VENEZIA E CENTRO VISITE LAZZARETO venezia LABORATORIO DI PROGETTAZIONE 2 prof. Stefano Rocchetto, Claudio Menichelli e Francesca Vergine

The project relates to the reclamation of the Island of Lazzareto in Venice. At the moment he area is dismissed and has a great potential to be one of the most important meeting site of all the city with the addition of a Museum, a research centre and a guest quarters. In the guest building the young researchers, from Italy and from all over the word, can be hosted for a specific time in order to focus on their job. The touristic target suggested to transform the entire area in a sort of floating garden, protected by the brick walls and completed by a series of other complementary facilities. The project also considers envisage the restoration and the restoration of the existing building through an attitude of respect of the historical elements: the new structures as the

museum, the auditorium and the bar are all objects that are simply added to the existing volume for a deference distant but also for structural reasons. The auditorium is like a folded paper which welcomes the public and allows a good acoustic environment because of its organic form. The red color is a design element in the setting of the different track, a real guide through the exhibit and it represents a true reference for the visitors. A stone path crosses the whole park and it creates little squares and connection to the buildings: a line that changes its thickness and its track to get closer or to sign a distance to the different entrance of the island. A green island faces the lagoon and represents a special spot, a privileged view to relax and to be inspired.

COMPLESSO RESIDENZIALE E COMMERCIALE ROVIGNO croazia PROGETTAZIONE 1 prof. Pierantonio Val

The area is a long and thin piece of coast in front of the Rovigno hills. The complex develops in two directions: one is the line that runs parallel to the coast and the other is its perpendicular. In this way it is generated a deeply connection with the sea, essential element which keeps everything together. The image of the tower is a white screen signed by little line openings towards north and it completely opens towards the sea and the old city centre up to the hill through long windows and loggie. The principal volume is a parallelepiped for triplex type house while a high tower for duplex apartments crosses the other elements and balances the whole complex. The last floor is a free and covered floor: at night it becomes a “lighthouse” and during the day it blocks the view

of those who look at it from the hill of the old town. This double relation creates a dialogue between the house tower and the bell tower at the two ends of Rovigno marking out the city limits. In the water the second level has big flats: a double height enhances the space of the living room and it is shown in the façade with a wide window while a patio allows the lighting of the double room. The patio generates also a link with the sky on one side while the terraces view is shifted towards the sea with a rotation of 90 degrees. Wooden brise-soleil screen the openings and stone walk articulates the passages. The project tries to keep together the geometry, the space relation, the functions and the view in a synthesis that is expressed in the shape of the different objects.

1 2 ALTERNATIVE nice, UN PARCO COME CENTRO BENESSERE FUSINA venezia TESI DI LAUREA di Lara Moras e Francesca Moro relatori proff. Giancarlo Carnevale, Gianna Riva e Fabio Peron co-relatore prof. Esther Giani

A park in the lagoon , a privileged point of view to look up to Venice, the possibility to forget for a while the frenetic daily routine and to find time for oneself are the key elements of this bold projects. Nowadays it is very difficult finding time and space to relax and think about life and relationships. If in the past the classical idea of otium was a habit that couldn’t be passed up on because it was a sort of duty towards themselves to be fully conscious and to realize the essence of human being, in our time we need an education to otium to find again the intimacy of ourselves, a sort of kτημα ες αει, a forever possession. The balance between personal and social moments is embodied here in the project by a centripetal movement in fact the there

is a track, a real architectural walk, that joins the four natural elements: water, air, wind and fire. There four elements are represented as four steps, each one of them has a different function and them all focus in a centre that is a symbolic building for collective meeting, the heart that bonds and rejoins these levels. The main idea comes from an original and unusual approach through the use of a pretext, an image found by chance in the picture of the first visit of the site. We so saw something meaningful in a tree trunk cut and its concentric rings. With the climate analysis and the context consideration, this image has was distort, twisted, molded so to be merged with the area.

In this process we found the hierarchy of paths, green areas and buildings that dialogue with the liquidity of the lagoon and its game with lights, its elusive borders and continuous changes. In the project there is a parking for cars and buses at the north entrance, and an area for water buses and ship towards the lagoon. The guest rooms and the apartments are placed in the east side of the area so that they can look at Venice as a morning inspiration. In the centre, the most organic and plastic form is the Spa, the key element of the whole project. An area with greenhouses finds its space in the western limits. Connecting element of this system is the park that is designed with the study of its facility, its changes during the year and its complementary object as a picnic areas, bike sharing and panoramic viewpoints.

The entire complex is ruled by regular shake and plastic shake that gives the rule that is able to organize the whole system and at the same time it is always the original idea that came from the first image of the trunck. How Focillon wrote on “Vita delle forme”, Architecture is an art connected with the land and every site has its own need and its own character that have to be listen to be involved in the project.

MATRICE TIPOLOGICA padiglioni per lo sport

MATRICE TIPOLOGICA padiglioni belvedere PARK FACILITIES: Every area of the green park has complementary functions as relax pavilions, spaces for random encounters, for sports activities and panoramic viewpoints. In this typological matrix there are all of the possible combinations for sports

and viewpoint. The first is a sort of snake that extends through the grass and the hills putting together open and close spaces. The viewpoints use the same base unit of the square but it is reinvented in different solutions trying to establish new connections with the water.

WELLNESS CENTRE, A SPA IN THE PARK: The Spa is characterized by a sequence of trackes that are always related to the four elements that are the focal points of all the design. It is a volume with a clear organic shape, to be built in concrete that is a liquid material and takes the shape of its container. The wall plug is realized in concrete frame-glass panels with a trapezoidal section as it is illustrated in the schemes. This solution is the result of the

analysis on the technological pack that aims to reduce the transmittance of the vertical wall. A green roof contributes to reduce the environmental impact of the big volume of the pools and it is very well merged in the park. The steps of the wellness, whose shape is based on a cell, follows the rules of the antique roman habits: a sequence of baths in different water with specific temperatures helps the body find its own balance. And so does the mind.

APARTMENTS: A long parallelepiped is the apartment building for about twenty temporary houses to rent for a personal regeneration of body and mind in this alternative centre for the wellness. Three different houses type are studied so to answer to a wide demand. The park is slanted to cover part of the basement which perfectly merges the context.

AMPLIAMENTO DI UNA SCUOLA CONEGLIANO treviso WORKSHOP prof. Pierantonio Val

The enlargement of a primary school is the occasion to add new room over the elements of environment control and renewable resources. The construction of a two levels auditorium offers new space for performances, room for public meetings and play room for the kids in the rainy days. This need allows to add a new architectural element of great relevance. The roof is pitched with two irregular slopes. The cross line of these two slopes generates a hole, a cut that brings diffuse light in the main room. All this movement makes the roof a sculptor object and it is the symbol of the energy conservation because it has solar panels on its surface: the solution is perfectly integrated and originally de-

signed. The existing walk is reinvented for a better connection of the rooms and spaces to enhance the arrangement of the building. The use of color allows to set a theme between the classes and the educational rooms that before were badly connected.

LAVORI treviso STUDIO P&C arch. Lara Moras

FACTORY, GARDEN AND AUDITORIUM The project consists of the construction and enlargement of a productive site of IWIS, also known as Tegola Canadese, famous all over the world for its products in the solar panel business and roof materials in Vittorio Veneto, 80 km north of Venice. The new volume is organized in three levels, one of which is underground. The highest floor has one 35 meter long truss made of prefabricated concrete. In the building, just finished, there are changing rooms for workers, offices and laboratories. The façade is built and realized with stretched steel sheets in which the blue color is the main architectural theme as well as the internal spaces. A tall tower that sticks out from the main object contains a 26

meter high stairs that leads to the roof. Here a green roof with flowers and grass hides the industrial nature of the complex and creates a visual continuity with the mountain in the background. At the ground level there is a walk, always blue, that organizes the pedestrian traffic and a green arrangement through the use of slopes allows the separation from the public street. To complete the project, an auditorium is under designing. This space is conceived as an oval element, a central space for meetings and corporate summits. There isn’t a specific direction or view but it is meant to be a central space in which there is no centrality. The volume of the auditorium is surrounded by an open space and it has modular elements for temporary and permanent expositions.

REQUALIFICATION OF THE MILITARY DISTRICT IN TREVISO The project, whose curator was architect Portoghesi, has the purpose of regenerating this urban site that was an old military base, nowadays dismissed. The area is close to the medieval walls and has a very powerful social meaning, especially for its position. In fact this area is close to the new university campus of Treviso and to the Sile river. The project wants to move the road system in the back of the existing buildings thus the coast is set free. This shift allows to create new green paths along the river with the addition of trees, benches and lights. The historical volumes are to be restored with the addition of other commercial, scholastic and residential functions.

ENLARGEMENT OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL The project wants to restore the classrooms and aims to give a bigger social space for the new dimension of the Institute. The work offers the possibility of improving the internal spaces and designing a colored track to connect the different activities of the school.

UNIVERSITY The experience as tutor at University allowed me to develop my knoledge of architecture and to create the best team work possible. Specifically at IUAV I had the possibility to work with the research professor E. Giani, the dean G. Carnevale and the two international architects Italo Rota and Philipe Rahm. I also had the opportunity to write articles on magaziones and to cure the book Manovre di intezia dinamica based on a collection of thesis on dismissed areas and its requalification through urban plans and architectural design.
