Scott Budnick, film producer, social justice advocate and head of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, will address Pilgrim School’s 25 seniors in the main sanctuary of First Congregational Church Mon., June 5. Steve Zimmer, Los Angeles Unified School District board member, will address 380 Fairfax High seniors at West Angeles Cathedral Wed., June 7.

Carla Christofferson, executive vice president and general counsel at AECOM, an engineering firm, and former Los Angeles Sparks owner, addressed 99 Marymount High School seniors May 26 at their on-campus commencement. Local graduates reveal their choices for college By Billy Taylor Student selects Ivy League school to study politics Immaculate Heart High School senior Oona Holahan describes herself as “a mid-Wilshire kid through and through.” But this fall, she’s moving to Connecticut to attend Yale University. Holahan first studied at St. Brendan’s for elementary and middle school and then transferred to Immaculate Heart High School (IH), where she has been active on and off campus. This year alone, she was the student body president and the captain of the swim team. And for the past three years, she has served as the Larchmont Chronicle school reporter for IH. “I loved writing my column every month and I loved being able to share a little bit about the great things we do at IH with readers of the Chronicle,” she says. Even for an ambitious student like Holahan, deciding what to do after high school wasn’t easy. “I was never the person who had a carefully constructed plan for my

future,” she says. To prepare for the college application process, Holahan says she started Oona Holahan reading up on schools, doing most of the research on her own. “At the start of senior year, I had a long list of schools I was interested in applying to,” says Holahan. She visited 20 schools, and applied to 12 of those schools. “At the end of the decision process, my top three picks were Yale, Columbia and Georgetown.” Why Yale? Holahan says it came down to researching each school’s political science department, learning more about life on campus, and attending admitted students’ weekends: “I’m excited by Yale’s course offerings, and I absolutely loved the feeling of being on campus. Plus, who could say no to Handsome Dan (the mascot)?” At Yale, Holahan says she plans to major in political science, with a focus on Ameri-

can history and politics. “As for career goals, I’m not set on what I’ll do after college, but I’m interested in careers in public service,” she explains. Not wasting any time, Holahan says she is excited to intern for Rep. Karen Bass this summer. • • • Budding musician finds the right fit in Ohio Larchmont Village resident Eliana Estrada says she is scared to leave home, but “couldn’t be more excited for the next chapter” of her life. Having lived in Larchmont since she was born, Estrada recalls walking to the Boulevard with her family on many Sunday mornings to go shopping or to get bagels at Sam’s: “We’d even rent movies from the Blockbuster that was on Larchmont many years ago!” A senior at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Estrada has served as the Larchmont Chronicle school reporter there for the past four years. “It has truly been an honor to represent my school in the Chronicle!” she says. Notre Dame honors two locals: Rev. Gregory Boyle, architect Martha Welborne

Welborne, FAIA were on the platform alongside United States Vice President Mike Pence at the University of Notre Dame’s graduation ceremonies last month. Pence received an honorary doctor of laws degree. Although many U. S. presidents have spoken at Notre Dame commencements, Pence is the first vice president to deliver the commencement address there. Welborne received an honorary doctor of fine arts degree, and Fr. Boyle received the 2017 Laetare Medal, the oldest and most prestigious honor given

to American Catholics. Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. officiated. Rev. Boyle of Homeboy In addition to the school valedictorian and the vice president, Windsor Square native Rev. Boyle was a featured speaker at the 172nd commencement ceremony May 21. Fr. Boyle is the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries in downtown Los Angeles. Homeboy is considered the world’s largest gang intervention and re-entry program in possibly what is the world’s gang capital. Boyle, often called "Father G," was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1984, and he was set to head a student program at Santa Clara University when a trip to Bolivia, where he met the poorest people in the region, changed his course. “The poor are trustworthy guides,” he said, and “… as luck would have it, [the Los Angeles Archdiocese] needed a pastor at Dolores Mission, which was the poorest parish in the city.” So, Fr. Boyle, who grew up on Norton Ave. and attended local Catholic schools, ended up in Boyle Heights. Jobs for a Future Dolores Mission was set

between two large housing projects in an area home to eight warring gangs when Boyle arrived as the youngest pastor in the history of the archdiocese. He set up a Jobs for a Future program and sent “homies” to felon-friendly employers around town. With funding from Hollywood producer Ray Stark, Boyle set up Homeboy Bakery at an abandoned bakery next door to the mission. The story did not yet have its Hollywood ending, at least not at first. The pastor and his enterprises received death threats and hate mail from citizens opposed to the gangrehabilitation effort. Then the

bakery burned down. Eventually, the bakery was rebuilt near Chinatown, and today the enterprise also includes a silkscreen and embroidery operation, Homegirl Café, a catering business and a farm-totable restaurant. The Homeboy Diner is in City Hall. Fr. Boyle speaks Fr. Boyle’s passionate address to the audience of approximately 24,000 family members, friends, faculty, and graduates in the famous Notre Dame football stadium may have been the best-received speech of the day. Fr. Boyle told the graduating students about communities’ “ability to stand in awe at what the poor

Welborne The other, still current Windsor Square resident recognized at the 2017 Notre Dame Commencement was Martha Lampkin Welborne, FAIA, who received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from her undergraduate alma mater. A Notre Dame graduate with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, Welborne is the senior vice president for corporate real estate and global facilities with The Walt Disney Co. Previously, she was the chief planning officer for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, where she helped develop the long-range future of local transportation. Before that, she was managing director of the Grand Avenue Committee, overseeing a $3 billion project to revitalize downtown Los Angeles, including the creation of Grand Park. After Notre Dame, Welborne earned master’s degrees in architecture and city planning from MIT, was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and (Please turn to page 14)

(Continued from page 2) Estrada has been busy this year “writing college application essays, practicing the violin to prepare for conservatory auditions, and maintaining good grades in school.” If that wasn’t Estraenough, da says she also is Eliana Estrada involved in many “outside” music activities, such as holding the position of principal second violin in the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, a part of the Los Angeles Dream Orchestra, and tutoring other music students as part of the California Scholarship Federation. When it came time to apply to college, Estrada says she narrowed her options to a list of 14 colleges, ranging from music schools within universities to independent music conservatories: “Of the 14 schools I applied to, I was asked to complete the next round of auditioning at 12 of them. Of these 12, I traveled to eight,” she says. Estrada was accepted to 11 schools, but says a final decision was “very difficult.” In the end, she decided on Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. “The minute I stepped on campus, I knew it was the school for me. Between the welcoming and support-

ive environment, the eager music students milling around, and the amazing faculty, I felt an instant connection to it,” she explains. At Oberlin, Estrada says she is eager to explore early music, specializing in baroque violin, playing on period instruments and learning music history: “Attending Oberlin will help me prepare for a career as a professional musician.” • • • In pursuit of a military service academy, career Since fifth grade, Loyola High School student Justin Joo has had a dream: to study at a service academy. He is focused on making a career out of military service. A Koreatown resident, Joo attended St. Brendan School through the eighth grade and transferred to Loyola, where he stayed busy with a number of activities. “During senior year,” says Joo, “I was president of Justin Joo the Loyola Science Club, played lacrosse, practiced kendo, did community service at St. Vincent de Paul, worked at the Beverly Hills Small Animal Hospital, and was actively involved with the Boy Scouts.” When it came time to think about life after Loyola, Joo identified and (Please turn to page 7)

GRADUATES OF 2017 (Continued from page 6) applied to 13 universities. But he admits that he was “mostly concerned” with only two of those schools: West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy. His decision wasn’t made any easier after finding out that he had been accepted to both: “I was very torn between the two schools and withdrew most of my other applications,” says Joo. To help decide, Joo says he visited both campuses, but ended up choosing the Naval Academy “because it offers more options in terms of military service selections.” What does he want to study? “I don’t have a specific major in mind,” Joo says, “but I do know that I want to be selected as a naval aviator upon graduation.” • • • Top two choices prove difficult decision Marlborough School senior Grace Atlee was already committed to USC when she got the news: she was accepted to Princeton. Now what to do? “Though I was thrilled to be admitted to Princeton, I was conflicted,” says Atlee. “I never thought I would make it off the waiting list, and I had fallen in love with USC, specifically the Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism.” A Hancock Park resident, Atlee attended St. Brendan School until seventh grade, when she transferred to

Marlborough. It was there, according to Atlee, that she found a wonderful community of students “whose drive and wide array of interests provided a constant source Grace Atlee of inspiration.” She says it pushed her to be a better student, friend and competitor. While at Marlborough, Atlee served as the All-School President, a member of the varsity volleyball team, co-editor-inchief of the yearbook, and on the leadership team of the Girls Go Global club. “I was busy in high school, but I enjoyed every moment of my experience,” she says. In all, Atlee says she applied to 10 colleges, but after learning that she was accepted to her top two choices, she had a big decision to make. “My family and I decided a visit to Princeton was in order because none of us had experienced the campus and we were curious to see what sort of environment it was,” she says. Atlee was so impressed with what she found, she committed to Princeton on the spot. “The professors and curriculum appealed to me in that they emphasize critical thought and research,” says Atlee, “and the people I met were intelligent and focused yet charming and fun-loving.”

Father sings tribute to daughter Larchmont real estate agent Bob Day’s new album, “Danbury Express,” is a metaphor for the passage of time, and it’s a heartfelt message to his daughter, Rachel. The impetus behind the recently completed album began five years ago, when Rachel was leaving for Wesleyan University, Conn. “It was a gut-wrenching experience. It was hard to see how fast things go,” said, Day, who grew up on First St. and Irving Blvd. (His father and uncle grew up on Third St. and Lucerne Blvd.) Day played drums and guitar and was in a band in high school, and dabbled in music into adulthood, even producing a ukulele album. The emotional upset of seeing his first daughter leave for college stirred his creative juices, and he credits today’s recording technology — “it offers a lot of independence and flexibility” — and a banjo with leading the way. He was staying at his sister-in-law’s home in Danbury, Conn., on his way to Wesleyan, when he found the banjo in the basement. He came back home, with the gifted banjo in hand, and, in between house showings, the Coldwell Banker Hancock Park South agent was in his garage working on what became the 10-track album. The journey on “Danbury Express” starts with Rachel’s freshman year and culminates at her graduation, with the final cut, “Commencement Day.” Rachel graduated a year ago May. “I’m more emotionally stable” now, says Day. Los Angeles High teacher retires, daughter graduates By Billy Taylor Longtime teacher Kevin Glynn has something special to celebrate. After a threedecade career in education, he is set to retire from the same school that his youngest child, Kathleen, will graduate from this summer. “It’s been a challenging career, but I think I’ve made a difference,” Glynn says of his 30 years of work with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). He spent 22 of those years teaching at Los Angeles High School (LAHS). “You have to make room for the young. I think I’ve done some good work, but it’s time for others to keep aloft the torch of education,” he says with a smile. “It’s time for me to go. I don’t want to be one of those teachers wheezing away in a rocking chair.” For Glynn, a teaching career wasn’t always a given. Born and raised in New York, he attended Colgate University, where he studied English and history. After graduating, Glynn briefly worked on Wall Street “but wanted to get away and see the world.” So he joined the Navy and served as a naval officer on active duty for eight years.

Then one fateful afternoon in San Diego, Glynn saw a flier that read: “Become a teacher now!” There was a shortage of teachers at the time and the call-to-arms was part of the LAUSD emergency credential program. “I came to Los Angeles in August of 1987 and went into the program for about six weeks.” Glynn earned teaching credentials in history and English, and later finished a master’s degree in U.S. History at Cal State Northridge. Still, Glynn says he never thought he would be a teacher “for more than five years.” In fact, Glynn was interviewing for jobs overseas when some-

thing happened that changed his life forever: he met his wife. “It was love at first sight,” Glynn says of Hancock Park native, and Marlborough School alum, Helen Baudistel. “That’s when I decided it was time to settle down.” Settle he did. Glynn asked LAUSD for a new assignment, and after spending two years teaching in Highland Park, he transferred to LAHS in 1995. In 1996, Glynn and his wife bought a house in the Miracle Mile. And they started their family in 1997 with the arrival of their son Thomas, who is now studying biochemistry at UC Riverside, followed by

daughter Kathleen in 1999. When asked to give his thoughts on the impact he had as a teacher over the years, Glynn laughs and thinks for a moment. “Teenagers sometimes have a certain barbaric characteristic to them,” he says. “I suppose, as teachers, we are on the front line of separating civilization from barbarism.” Class with dad For the past three years, Glynn wasn’t the only member of his family walking the halls of LAHS. His daughter, Kathleen, transferred to the school as a sophomore. “When I started at LAHS, I didn’t really know anybody, but all the teachers knew me. “The thing about everyone knowing you, and your dad, means that you can’t get away with anything!” she says. Kathleen attended Cathedral Chapel School until eighth grade and then transferred to Hamilton High School to participate in its Academy of Music and Performing Arts magnet. But after questioning a future career in the arts, Kathleen woke up one morning and told her parents she

was transferring to LAHS. Her parents were stunned. Kathleen was attracted to the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) magnet at LAHS, and she thought the opportunities at the school would better prepare her for college life. “I had really good math teachers and really good science teachers here,” she says. And it wasn’t just the academics. Kathleen learned leadership qualities through clubs like the leadership council, MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) and robotics club and annual talent shows. She even founded a drama club. Kathleen plans to put her high school STEM education to good use this fall as a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, majoring in biomimicry, which she describes as “a fusion between biology and engineering.” What was it like sharing the hallways with dad? “I used to have students come up to me and either complain, laugh or commiserate with me. The other thing they always say to me is that I look so much like my dad. “I’m not sure that’s a compliment though.”

At the Sunday morning ceremony in the stadium, Welborne was one of seven honorary degree recipients, including the vice president. There were 3,171 degrees conferred by Notre Dame this year. That afternoon, Welborne was the featured speaker at the School of Architecture’s smaller graduation ceremony held on the steps of that school’s classical 1917 building, Bond Hall, for the undergraduate and graduate architecture degree recipients and their parents, families and friends. Forty years ago In her remarks, Welborne recounted some of the people and events of 40 years ago, when she was an undergraduate working late nights in the architecture studios of Bond Hall. She spoke of 1975, the year she graduated: “Gerald Ford was president because Richard Nixon had just resigned after the Watergate scandal; the last American troops pulled out of Vietnam months before we graduated; personal computers had not been invented, nor had the cell phone; personal calculators, if you remember them, were brand new, but none of us had them; we used slide rules, I’m serious,” she said. “At Notre Dame in 1975, women had just been admitted as undergraduates three years prior, in 1972, and there were

only 300 of us out of 8,000 undergraduates,” she added. “Ara Parseghian was the football coach; Joe Theismann was the quarterback; and Rudy was actually here then as a student, not as a movie star,” said Welborne. Her three key pieces of advice to the graduates to help them launch their careers were to: “be open to the unexpected and unimagined; find and follow your passion; and flow in your own river,” referring to a story she shared with her listeners. Very proud of her speech and accomplishments and her most recent honor is her husband, John H. Welborne, publisher of the Larchmont Chronicle.
