DONATIONS TO KEEP the funicular railway in operation can be made online at angelsflight.org.
433 S. Citrus Avenue
Online campaign to aid in operation of Angels Flight The nonprofit Angels Flight Railway Foundation, the seventh private operator of the railway, has launched a campaign to raise funds online, according to foundation chair Adele Yellin of Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles. The campaign was promoted at the recent showing of the 1951 film noir movie, “M,” at the Million Dollar Theater. The screening included remarks from mystery writer Michael Connelly, who took time off from the final days of filming the second season of his TV show, “Bosch,” to pro-
mote Angels Flight. Funds for the railway are urgently needed, Yellin says, for ongoing expenses while government officials ponder the private railway’s future. Angels Flight has been idle for two years since a federal regulator forced state regulators to delay reopening. The foundation is composed of philanthropic business leaders who are stewards of the town’s 114-year-old funicular railway on Bunker Hill. Donors may go to angelsflight.org for more information or to make a contribution.

A bronze bas-relief figure of architect Paul R. Williams was unveiled last month at the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center Legacy Plaza at 2500 S. Western Ave. The 9-foot by 7-foot sculpture was lowered by crane onto the Paul R. Williams Memorial Plaza at the 1949 Golden State Mutual Insurance Company, designed by Williams, and new corporate offices of SCLARC, which provides a host of services to those with developmental disabilities. West Adams-based artistsculptor Georgia Hanna Toliver created the sculpture of the 20th century African American architect, the first licensed African American architect west of the Mississippi River. The piece is flanked by large stainless steel panels which tell of Williams’ history. “Williams was an artist. His architecture was multidimensional and so was his life,” Toliver said. “And since this sculpture would be in the heart of the West Adams historic district, what better way to tell his story than through his own artistic contribution.” As a board member of the West Adams Heritage Association (WAHA), Toliver is leading efforts in revitalizing the

(1894-1980) Williams was accomplished in several styles—Tudor, Moderne, Spanish and Colonial. “Williams’s unique vision and design elements made these styles his own. Whether designing modest homes or luxurious estates, they were all designed to suit the lifestyle of the families who would live in them,” said Flo Selfman, WAHA spokesman. A few of Williams’ 3,000 notable structures are: His own home in West Adams’ Lafayette Square (1951). Public housing (1940, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles).

‘It felt like Mayberry’ at Longwood's progressive dinner party By Nanci Leonard Myth: In L.A., no one knows their neighbors because people are constantly moving in and out. Fact: The 18 houses that comprise the 900 block of South Longwood Avenue (Brookside) just celebrated their 37th Annual Progressive Dinner Block Party. For the first 20 years, the
potluck block party was held in the magnificent theater in Bill and Irene Larsen’s backyard. (The family has owned the home for 73 years.) However, the neighbors decided that they would like to visit each other’s homes so a progressive dinner was planned. Once again, as she has done for many years, Sherry Bonanno (the block captain who has
lived with her husband Tom on Longwood for 20 years) planned this year’s progressive dinner Nov. 8. A variety of appetizers was served at Sandy and Bill Boeck’s house; they’ve resided there for 42 years. Then the neighbors walked down the block to Reatha and Owen Smith’s house for main courses; they’ve resided on Long-

Two of the “newer” neighbors, Judy Farkas and John Kellog, moved to Longwood three years ago. Judy still remembers that, on moving day, several neighbors came over with muffins and wine to

welcome them to the neighborhood. Judy commented: “I thought that we bought a house, but, we bought a neighborhood. It felt like Mayberry!” At this moment, there’s one house for sale on Longwood. When the new owners move in, they will probably be surprised to find that, like Judy, their new home includes friendly neighbors and annual progressive dinners.
century, housing styles evolved to American Foursquare, Arts & Crafts and Craftsman. Mother, sister developers While Charles Victor Hall is considered the man most responsible for the initial development of the area located just southeast of the intersection of Adams and Western, it was his mother Eliza Jane Hall and older sister Mary Hall
who were the developers in the family. Taking advantage of the Homestead Act of 1862 (which awarded settlers with free land) they applied for and were granted two 160-acre parcels from what is today Western Avenue east to Normandie, and from Adams north to Washington. The 39th annual block party was held on the 300 block of S. Lucerne Blvd. in October with some 120 neighbors and friends for some good old fashioned neighborly fun. Live music was provided by a dynamic band and delicious Persian food of chicken and luleh kebob, grilled tomatoes and rice was served. Cupcakes from Hansens and yummy Choctal ice cream were a huge hit. Petersen Museum provided a 1934 LaSalle Series 350 Convertible Coupe for all to enjoy. Some neighbors played ping pong while others got very serious competing in an egg toss. Psychic Melinda Hess provided insightful readings while others had their faces painted and their funny bones tickled by Silly Amy the clown. All in all, it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood and we're very proud of our rich tradition. By Robin Jameson

Legends prevail on last days of Pontius Pilate Whatever happened to Pontius Pilate, the man who “washed his hands” and condemned Jesus Christ to death? wonders Peter Fagerholm. There is no factual information, only traditions and legends. One story claims Pilate and his wife became penitent and died in the faith. Another tale has it that Pilate’s later life was so full of misfortune that he committed suicide in Rome. His body was thrown
into the Tiber, but evil spirits so disturbed the water that it was taken out and removed to France’s Rhône River. The most popular legend is that he was banished by the Emperor Tiberius and, after wandering to Switzerland, threw himself into Lake Lucerne, which just so happens to be at the base of Mount Pilatus. His ghost is said to appear annually and whoever sees the specter will die
before the year is out. This saga became so pervasive that by the 16th century, a law was passed forbidding anyone to throw stones in the water for fear of bringing a tempest on the country. I wonder what old Pilate would do if anyone washed their hands in the lake. ••• If someone has a “face to stop a clock,” they’re ugly. Why? wonders Gloria Carr. Expressions like this

abound in our language. I’ve even heard of someone who was so ugly “they’d make a train go down a dirt road” or someone who was so tall “they could hunt ducks with a rake.” The key word in the clock analogy is “face.” Rarely do we find a word with such wide and varied uses. Of course it’s the front of our head; but we also make a face, we put our best face forward, and wipe people off the face of the earth. Printing type has a face; so does a clock, coal and rock. We fly in the face of the enemy, we lose face and judge people on the face of evidence. We make a long face, face our pasts, face the music and get in someone’s face. Buildings face a certain way, and we can even face a wall with stucco. There are face cards, face lifts, face-offs, face plates, face values and face flies. We can face up to something or face out. We can even be facetious if we want; although I promise that is not my intention here. •••

What does my grandma mean when she says, “he’s just trying to get your goat?” wonders Brooke Galsworthy. From early times, the goat
ProfessorKnowIt-All Bill Bentley
has been associated with the idea of sin and evil. Legend has it that the Devil even made the goat in his own image. In medieval depictions, the Prince of Darkness is often portrayed as a goat (horns, cloven hooves, billy goat’s beard). When your grandma uses this expression she’s trying to keep you from giving in to the harassment that’s trying to bring out bad behavior. Professor Know-It-All is the nom de plume of Bill Bentley, who invites readers to try and stump him. Send your questions to willbent@prodigy.net.
