from 6:00-8:30 The movie “Shrek” will be shown in the lower picnic area and, as before, there will be free popcorn and cocoa offered to members of the community. Downtown’s Music Center revamps its dining options As part of a massive reinvention of the public space joining the various Music Center venues, the entire food program has been reinvigorated to appeal to arts lovers and downtown denizens alike. Kendall’s Brasserie still holds court on the sidewalk level, and Cocina Roja, a Mexican café, continues adjacent to the Ahmanson, but the newly-designed plaza now boasts a number of new dining options. Coffee lovers will be happy to get a locally-roasted caffeine fix at Go Get Em Tiger (a popular choice on Larchmont Boulevard, too). Wine aficionados will find a fine selection at The Mullin Wine Bar, where cocktails and food truck fare are also available. Burgers and brews can be enjoyed at the casual Upstage Burger on the Pavilion’s east side above First Street. The centerpiece of the new food program is Abernethy’s, a lovely blonde wood and white-walled restaurant with an extensive covered patio and an innovative culinary concept: feature a different rising star chef every three months and let him or her shine. Although a revolving kitchen concept has been tried in various permutations in Los Angeles before without long-term success, it promises to be a perfect match for The Music Center — as patrons return for different theatrical productions, so, too, the chef and menu will change every 90 days or so. An impressive group of chefs and tastemakers, including Susan Feniger (Border Grill), Ray Garcia (Broken Spanish), Govind Armstrong (Post and Beam and 8oz Burger Bar), and Russ Parsons (former LA Times food editor), was tasked with identifying emerging chefs who represent the diversity of the food scene in Los Angeles. Abernethy’s inaugural chef, Shirley Chung, was the runner-up on Bravo’s Top Chef in 2016 and is the restaurateur of the Culver City favorite, Ms. Chi Café, where the flavors of her native Beijing fuse with a modern American sensibility. Before ordering at Abernethy’s, you might want to sip on one of the featured $16 cocktails: perhaps Chef Chung’s favorite, the Green Lantern, which combines Chivas Regal with lemon juice and jasmine green tea syrup, or a Hummingbird, with vodka, hibiscus flower tea, Lillet Rouge, lemon juice, raspberry cordial and Pernod. Wines are curated to complement the Chinese fusion menu, with tasting notes that run to berries and citrus. The refreshing wines are also refreshing in price: 10 are under $14 a glass. Of course, food should be shared, and two could make
On the Menu by
Helene Seifer a comfortable meal of three dishes from the dozen savories on offer. We had six — and took home enough for lunch the next day. Chicken potstickers were the most traditional dish we ordered. Five pieces for $11, they were delicious swathed in a pomegranate sweet and sour sauce. The dumpling skin was thin enough to avoid carb overload and thick enough to encase the filling with ease. Earthier, the Beijing lamb belly, $22, lined up small rectangular packets of lamb like so many dominoes. Braised, pressed and seared, the sweet meat was balanced by a black vinegar reduction and ferment-
ed leek sesame sauce. The most delightful dish was the “dancing” eggplant. Short tubes of Japanese eggplant were arrayed like soldiers and dusted with bonito flakes. The heat emanating from the cooked vegetables caused the flakes to gyrate — hence the “dancing” moniker. This dish was videoed more than eaten, however; although visually stunning, it tasted bland. Other plates more than made up for that misstep. The amus- ABERNETHY’S’ revolving star chefs will ingly named Bowl of offer a varied menu. Lipchitz “Peace on Hugs was $12 worth Earth” statue is left. Photo by Tim Street-Porter of comfort. The light meat and bone broth was flavored with ginseng and Roman pecorino and cracked goji berry. Two tender pork ribs pepper pasta. The Northern Chifloated inside. Cacio e pepe was na-style soft noodles ($14 bowl) an Asian take on the famous were bathed in a light pecorino
and tofu sauce with Sichuan peppercorns providing a hint of heat. Soft noodles tend to clump together within minutes of cooking, but the homey taste more than made up for that. It was particularly good when eaten with any of the saucier, heartier dishes, such as the lamb or the kung pao tofu. The $16 tofu came highly recommended — and deservedly so. This was our favorite dish of the night and capsulized the best of Chef Chung’s cooking style. Perfectly fried tofu cubes — crispy and caramelized outside, creamy and delicious inside — held reign over a pool of Sichuan chili-laced sauce with baby carrots providing a bright color pop and hazelnuts adding crunch. I want this every night. At least until November, when the Magic Castle’s Jason Fullilove takes over the kitchen with his fresh take on Soul Food. Abernethy’s, 220 N. Hope St., Music Center Plaza.

YESHIVAT YAVNEH
Hello everyone, My name is Alec Salatin and I will be telling you about all of the events happening at Page Academy this October! This month at Page the events will mostly be an awareness month for fire safety to drug and anti-bullying. Included in the awareness events are the LAFD fire truck presentation, where firefighters show students a firetruck and discuss their responsibilities. As part of Red Ribbon Week we will spread anti-drug awareness. During The Great California Shakeout, we do an earthquake drill. October is not just about awareness events. We also have the fall festival which is lots
Yavneh began the school year with the inauguration of a new program, #RISE, which aims to help students reach their full potential. Each of the letters in #RISE symbolizes a key ideal: The “R” stands for “rigor,” the expectation that students will push themselves into doing more difficult work and taking on challenges. The “I” represents “innovation,” asking students to employ all their creative ideas into cre-

attend. They are also preparing for Halloween by rehearsing for the play that they will put on for the school. On Oct. 27, Saint Brendan School will participate in the Larchmont Fair by hosting a dunk tank and a shaved ice stand! On the day of Halloween, kindergarten through 7th graders will participate in a Halloween parade where they will display their amazing costumes to the whole school. The parade is judged by the 8th graders who will then pick three costumes from each class to win a prize for the most creative, funniest and scariest costume!

As everyone settles into their new classroom, gets to know their new teacher, and catches up with their friends, the 8th graders are preparing for the HSPT and the ISEE assessments while starting applications for the high schools they hope to

BISHOP John Taylor (right) formally installs Peter McCormack (left) as ESLA head of school.
ESLA head formally appointed to role Peter McCormack was formally appointed Head of School at the Episcopal School of Los Angeles (ESLA) after serving in the role in the interim for the past year. Episcopal Bishop John H. Taylor presided at the Aug. 29 installation, where McCormack was presented with a tradition-

to see what we can do to help our friends, classmates, and community to have a better year. In the spirit of RISE, Yavneh held an assembly with all students, grades 1-8, assigning each grade to assist one younger grade. The 8th graders also have been enjoying a lunch program, in which we meet with the Yavneh heads of school to discuss

programming and curriculum. One question that is asked of the students at the lunches is, what defines Yavneh? Most answers centered around one theme: “Our teachers have a true passion for teaching, while also building relationships with each of us.” With our teachers behind us, Yavneh students are ready to start the new year!

MARLBOROUGH By Avery Gough 8th Grade
This month has been very exciting month for our Marlborough community. First of all, we started school two weeks ago! It was amazing seeing friends I hadn’t seen all summer. The first week, we got settled

in. We started to memorize our schedules and practice opening our lockers. Also, we had fall sports tryouts. There was volleyball, cross-country, swimming, and tennis. I made it on the purple team, which is the
higher of the two teams. For volleyball and tennis, the 7th/8th grade teams have a purple team and a white team, but for crosscountry and swimming, there are no cuts for the teams, so everybody get on those teams if they try out. At Marlborough, each grade goes on bonding retreat the second week of school. The 8th
grade went to El Capitan in Santa Barbara. We did group activities, and we also had free time to be with our friends and do different activities such as swimming and bike riding. Then in the evening we watched our fellow classmates at a talent show.
A few performances included monologues, singing, and dances. We after made smores and talked before heading out to our cabins. Now as we are heading into our third week, I am very excited to get back in the rhythm of things.

boring community, HSH takes action. We participate in planting trees, painting murals, and volunteering around Los Angeles for various acts of kindness. Throughout the years at HSH, I have done activities and exercises that have helped me develop team building skills, strategic problem-solving skills, and also social skills. As a sixth grader ambassador this year, I look forward to meeting new prospective families at my school. I am also excited for the field trips, fundraisers, events, and social activities in my final year. One of these upcoming field trips is Outdoor Education. Outdoor Ed. is a trip that the fifth and sixth grade classes attend, and this year we are going to Big Bear. It is there where we will embark on different activities, like hiking, exploring, and staying in cabins. The trip will be a good opportunity for our classes, teachers, and counselors to bond and learn more about each other through various activities and conversations.

Hello, I’m Nikhil George, and I am in 6th grade at Hollywood Schoolhouse. Some of my interests include books, movies, politics, technological engineering, basketball, tennis, and soccer. HSH has a departmentalized program, which gives the fifth and sixth graders an opportunity to be introduced early to the responsibilities of a locker, their own Chromebook, traveling from class to class, and keeping track of their required materials for core subjects. In my nine years at HSH, I have learned the importance of living in a community. The core qualities that the Hollywood Schoolhouse community teaches to students are to be safe, kind, and responsible, as well as inspire fearless curiosity and learning among all students. In the neigh-

story here, there is a constant feeling that there’s more there that we don’t know. Director John Crowley does an outstanding job of keeping up the pace, aided by exceptional music by Trevor Gureckis that keeps tension in the movie when you aren’t sure exactly why. All the performances are very good, which is one of the reasons the movie holds interest. If you read the book, though (I didn’t), and know the ending, it might not be as palatable. Raise Hell: The Life And Times Of Molly Ivins (7/10): Runtime 91 minutes. NR. Molly Ivins was a vitriolic political columnist as far to the left as she could get. She was a good writer and had a sense of humor. In addition to calling out the truth about the second George Bush (which was generally discounted due to her known prejudice), she admirably and bravely faced her death with equanimity and humor. It gets 7/10 because it is entertaining, in spite of its fawning partiality. Vita and Virginia (5/10): Runtime 110 minutes. R. The ambience of the period is outstanding. But not only is the film slow and tedious, they cast two beautiful actresses to play two of the least attractive women of the 1920s; so much for verisimilitude. Ad Astra (5/10): Runtime
122 minutes. PG-13. This Brad Pitt vehicle is as absurd as the archaic early ’50s TV series Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. But Tom was before landing on the moon when space travel was truly a figment of the imagination. What’s Ad Astra’s excuse? Hustlers (3/10): Runtime 110 minutes. R. This tepid, watered down, sanitized chick flick of strip club ladies getting some kind of twisted revenge on the men they entertain misses the mark entirely. Excruciating to watch, it has the typically hard-to-swallow slice-of-life dialogue endemic to all these films. Not even Sarah Bernhardt or Bette Davis could make this dialogue digestible. Where’s my Roy Cohn? (1/10): Runtime 97 minutes. PG-13. While this is interesting, it is also so terribly biased and clumsy it should be taught in film school as an epitome of artless advocacy which has no place in a proper documentary. Just one example of its callousness; it makes the gratuitously cruel claim that Cohn’s mother was the ugliest woman in New York. Cohn was a difficult guy with a lot to criticize (that’s an understatement), but he deserves a more even-handed treatment than this one that obviously went into the project with its mind made up and its eye on the target of Donald Trump, who apparently made the titular statement.
