HELLO TRAVELERS The highly anticipated One&Only Mandarina opens its doors Nov. 1. It’s close to Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita but worlds away from the typical resorts you’ll find in Mexico’s beach resort areas. The design predates the COVID-19 pandemic, but the 105 standalone villas are perfect for social distancing, and the rainforest surroundings evoke destinations like Bali and Thailand that are out of our reach right now. Also open for business is One&Only Gorilla’s Nest in Rwanda, the staging area for one of the most memorable experiences available: gorilla trekking. Pair it with the chimpanzees near One&Only Nyungwe House in Rwanda’s southwest, which opens Dec. 1, and you’ll find yourself in primate paradise.

INSIDERS CLUB

Surrounded by tropical rainforests and pristine beaches, you’re easily forgiven for thinking you somehow willed yourself to Southeast Asia. In reality, you’re only about an hour from the Puerto Vallarta airport and a few hours’ flight from home. You’re at One&Only Mandarina, a lush 640-acre resort opening Nov. 1, just in time for a tropical vacation when the weather cools at home. “It’s a great option for those who were hoping for a more exotic trip this year” before COVID-19 closed borders and wreaked havoc on travel plans, said Michael Foley, Americas director of leisure sales for Kerzner International, whose portfolio includes the One&Only properties. Also perfect for the socially distanced world we find ourselves in is that all Mandarina’s accommodations are standalone villas. Some are treehouses 40 feet above the ground. The 105 villas feature floor-to-ceiling windows that show off the natural surroundings. “It’s very different from other properties in the area that have a manicured, country club atmosphere,” Foley said. “It’s very wild, where the jungle meets the sea.” Because of the seclusion, Mandarina has been a popular booking choice for young couples. But with a 42,000-square-foot kids club conjured up by Oscar-winning set designer Brigitte Broch, it’s also incredibly welcoming for families. There’s also a beachside equestrian center and polo field and miles of nature trails through rainforest, flatland and beach. Yes, let’s not forget the beach.

The mile-long stretch of secluded sand includes a swimmable beach, a beach club designed for families and water sports for all ages. There’s kayaking and paddle boarding in the estuary, and ziplines in the rainforest. “It’s the perfect place for having space to yourself and connecting with nature,” Foley said. The pool and restaurants are built into a cliffside, and the zero-waste Treetop bar showcases indigenous flowers, herbs and fruits. Botany experts weighed in throughout design and construction to ensure preservation of the area’s ecology. “We didn’t impact the landscape. If we uprooted a tree, we replanted it somewhere else on property.” The venerable nearly 500-year-old La Abuela — “the grandmother” — tree guards over the forest, and the reception area sits next to some of the best preserved ruins of the Cora people. The spa blends indigenous traditions with modern therapies for a complete holistic wellness experience. Each building is made from clay, wood, precious metal and stone sourced from the local region. Even the sunset lounge, at the end of a 600-foot jetty, incorporates nature, sitting at the center of a long extinct volcano. Speaking of ancient volcanoes, One&Only has farther-flung experiences in destinations we can still travel to, including One&Only Gorilla’s Nest on the edge of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. The resort has been welcoming visitors back since Sept. 1 to connect with the majestic primates in the area.

Here as well, the 21 lodges and suites blend into eucalyptus forest and let nature do the inspiring. In addition to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, the national park is home to more than 300 bird species. The gorillas certainly are the stars of the show, and there are just a few hundred of them left in existence. Treks are often described as “life-changing,” and for good reason. You’re unlikely to forget the feeling of getting up close and personal with these breathtaking creatures.

Starting Dec. 1, you’ll be able to pair Gorilla’s Nest with One&Only Nyungwe House in Rwanda’s southwest. A guided canopy walk is a perfect introduction to Nyungwe’s dramatic wilderness. In the national park, you’ll find 13 kinds of primates, including the area’s famed chimpanzees. One&Only has crafted an itinerary that uncovers the secrets of Rwanda. As with each One&Only experience, it’s a triumph of natural beauty.
