From this port city, it is a short transfer to Taormina, resting 820 feet above the sea and overlooking imposing Mount Etna. In the early 20th century, Taormina became a colony for expatriate artists and writers, including D H Lawrence. Highlights of any tour of this city would include the remarkably preserved Roman-style Greek Theater, whose acoustics are still appreciated in performances today; the splendid 15th century Palazzo Corvaia; and the Odeon, a small Imperial Age theater set amidst colorful public gardens.

VALLETTA, MALTA ARRIVES: 8:00 AM DEPARTS: 6:00 PM Malta’s major port and capital, the entire city of Valletta was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The centerpiece is the impressive 19th century Mosta Dome, visible from anywhere on the island, with its inlaid marble floor and the gilded, carved stone flowers set around the interior dome. For a tranquil afternoon, stroll the San Anton Palace Gardens, artistically laid out in Three Villages - Attard, Lija and Balzan. Or, for spectacular vistas, take a day tour to Dingli Cliffs, which offer striking views of the sea and rugged coastline. PORTO TORRES (SARDINIA), ITALY ARRIVES: 7:00 AM DEPARTS: 4:00 PM Wander through the lovely town of Porto Torres and find yourself surrounded by a vast collection of Roman antiquities. For instance, you may walk the hallowed grounds of the Basilica di San Gavino, one of Sardinia’s most important Romanesque churches. The church, which stands on an ancient pagan burial ground, is dedicated to one of the great Sardinian saints, Gavino, commander of the Roman garrison at Torres during the reign of the emperor Diocletian. At the Archaeology Park & Museum, view the excavated remains of Turris Libisonis, the ancient Roman city on which the modern day Porto Torres stands. Highlights include numerous ceramics, busts, marble statues, mosaics, and an impressive Roman bridge.
