INTENSIVE CARE UNITS

In modern operating rooms innovative surgical procedures are being performed. Hospitals are often facing cost and design challenges and daunting technology choices. After a hospital determines which technology and approach will be adopted, an extensive planning process follows. Healthcare planners interview all parties involved to find out how big the OR needs to be, where it should be located, which specialties will use it, what kind of procedures will be performed and how many: what equipment will be needed and where to put it. Ideally, planners should get input not only from the physicians who will perform surgery, but also consider possible future scenarios in case other specialties might need to use it as well. Note: It’s important to involve biomedical engineering (management and maintenance), IT (connection to hospital IT) and the OR manager (OR set-up). The operating room (OR) is a dynamic work environment in which effective team collaboration is critical to surgical outcomes. In this high-risk performance stage, lapses in teamwork can potentially lead to medical incidents.

MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY STEEL Stainless steel, due to its parameters, compares favourably with other materials in both technical and economical aspects. It also has additional high aesthetic value and is environment friendly.

GLASS Glass, apart from its hygienic advantages, has wonderful properties of light transmission that help create healing environments by bringing in more daylight.

TECHNICAL Glass or steel panels can be made with technical supplies module separated. In case radiological protection is required, lead of adequate thickness is used at the backside of the panels and supporting structure. Heating panels are available to replace radiators in operating theatres.

DESIGN ALVO modular walls are available in multiple design options. Graphics can be printed on steel panels, powder coated or behind the glass. Wall panels with LED lighted motifs are installed to bring ambient atmosphere in the room. This is appreciated both in operating rooms where minimally invasive surgeries are being performed, or in ICUs/NICUs and patient rooms to create intimate, healing atmosphere.

MODULAR With modular walls, the surgical space can be perfectly tailored to the user’s needs. Modernization or technology upgrade can be done overnight without disturbing the surgery plan. Modular solutions are also preferred due to their short installation time and flexibility to add new elements to an already existing system.

HYGIENIC Arch. German Haimerl, German Haimerl Architekten, Munich, Germany

The silver ion-based antimicrobial treatment by SanitizedÂŽ is incorporated in the ALVO modular walls and ceilings in order to permanently and reliably protect them against the growth of bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus and echeria coli. Space between modular wall panels (approx. 6mm) is filled with hermetic silicone seal. The seal has antibacterial silver ions additive, and is resistant to UV, detergents, bactericidal products, water, steam and chemicals.

INTEGRATED

Modular technology in walls and ceilings coupled with an integrated video-over-IP technology solution eliminates cables clutter, equipment collisions, saves money and fosters better clinical collaboration. Doors, cabinets, viewing windows, monitors and technical supplies come flush, integrated within the walls of the OR.

DESIGN Individually designed graphics are often printed on modular walls (steel or glass) to make the surgical environment friendly and to facilitate concentration. Modular walls are available in wide spectrum of materials, colors and design options.

ALVO ONLINE CATALOGUE

ALVO team installs a complete surgical environment including medical flooring, general lights, laminar flow etc. All elements of the ALVO modular operating room are available as CAD files in the ALVO Online Catalogue. Our OR planning team prepares visualizations and 3D renderings, as realisitc images sometimes tell more of the space utility than plans.

MODULAR The main questions asked when buying new equipment are: can I share my modalities between ORs? Can I add or change devices on-the-fly? And will it be compatible with future technologies, such as UHD or 4K? Modular, open-architecture solutions are the right choice for hybrid operating rooms.

HYGIENIC

Antibacterial treatment of exposed OR surfaces with Sanitized® solution eliminates infections and boosts clinical outcomes. Treated surfaces are protected against bacteria and fungal growth.

INTEGRATED

Integrated ORs are more ergonomic and managing the OR from a touch screen eliminates the ‘spaghetti syndrome’ and scrub nurses’ movements during surgeries (hygienic reasons). The ALVO Integra solution with topquality Nexxis technology allows you to distribute video, audio and computer data over the IP network in an uncompressed format, inside the OR and between ORs. Surgeons display and share medical images without delay. The system can record voice notes and videos, allows for video conferencing and facilitates consultation with experts outside the hospital.

DESIGN Collaboration between surgeons, pathologists and radiologists during surgery depends on the space planning and room atmosphere a lot, where crucial decisions need to be taken. Colors and lighting of the room should facilitate concentration.

22

HYBRID OR PLANNING

Before planning a hybrid operating room, a detailed plan of its utilization should be established. The demands of usage determine the necessary resources – location, space and imaging equipment required. Careful planning and professional expertise are fundamental for every hybrid room project.

MODULAR HYGIENIC INTEGRATED DESIGN ALVO DOOR SYSTEMS Used by everyone throughout the operating theatre, OR doors can be a source of cross contamination and infection. For this reason, automatic sliding doors have become a preferred standard. Sliding doors occupy less of the valuable space than hinged doors and produce less air disturbance when opened or closed during surgery. Door handles of manual doors can be delivered with Sanitized® silver ions protection or made of antimicrobial copper Cu+. ALVO MEDICAL offers a wide range of both manual and automatic doors, sliding and hinged with may design options. The glass in OR doors can be individually designed in many shapes and sizes. Printing hospital’s logo or name of the department is also possible. ALVO MEDICAL OR doors can be made of: • stainless steel • stainless steel powder-coated (available with graphic prints) • steel powder-coated (available with graphic prints) • glass (available with graphic prints) • electric glass (milky glass / transparent glass) X-Ray shielding with lead plates is available. The surrounding frame is adjusted to allow the easy installation in all types and thickness of walls. The spread of infection can be controlled by using touchless sensors, that allow touch-free opening and closing. Both OR doors and integrated blinds can be controlled via ALVO INTEGRA OR solution.

HERMETIC DOORS The ALVO hermetic sliding doors are used for imaging labs, hybrid operating rooms, isolation wards, and mortuaries.

FIRE DOORS The ALVO fire doors have been tested to provide protection in terms of fire resistance and, critically, to compartment hospitals, as they rely on phased evacuation of patients, in case of fire. Fire doors by ALVO MEDICAL are integral to safety solution offered to the healthcare sector.

26

HUMAN ORIENTED DESIGN

We take a human-oriented design approach when developing new medical products. To truly understand what the top tasks of the surgical teams are when they enter when thy enter preparation rooms and how well these tasks can be performed, we use ethnographically informed research and co-design sessions. By moving design activity into the OR routine, we believe our products are great pieces of furniture which help to prevent the spread of infection.

29

MODULAR Intensive care units (ICU) and neonatal intensive care units (NICU) designed by ALVO are ergonomic and adaptable, with the capacity to maximize the use of space, time, equipment, communication, and staff integration. With modular technology system elements can be added and merged with the already existing setup. Media and supplies come integrated, flush in modular walls and ceilings, making it easy to clean and maintain.

HYGIENIC

Vital touch surfaces of ALVO products incorporate Sanitized速 technology for antimicrobial protection. The Sanitized速 hygiene solution in combination with the required cleaning contribute to a significant improvement in hygiene safety.

INTEGRATED

The patient and staff entry points are crucial in design, since they will dictate the sterile field location and, in turn, flow of sterile materials. In order to ensure that clean areas will remain clean, pathways of clean supplies must not intersect pathways of contaminated supplies.

DESIGN Nature-inspired motifs correlate with therapeutic and supportive environments. Room solutions provided by ALVO Medical contribute to making intensive care units and patient areas a better place, for patients, their families and the nursing staff.

30

PATIENT OBSERVATION HEALING DESIGN

In patients’ recovery areas and intensive care units (ICU), creating a sustainable and healing environment is priority. Friendly design, access to daylight, patient monitoring solutions that protect patient’s privacy at the same time, significantly reduce the anxiety of the patient and his family, and make the stressful work environment of the staff a better place.
