Concept

Parcursul volumetric

The last project of my forth year revitalizes an area located on the „periphery of the centre” of Bucharest by creating a space where several groups of neighbours can become a community. In the analyzed area, the most common type of buildings have two floors and mostly a residential function, however, there is no green area or urban space where the whole community can meet.

The project includes a set of services, each floor is divided into three major functional areas. On the ground floor, the lobby and the area for children are divided by the vertical circulation package. In Prima propunere, desi respecta regulemtul de constructie din zona, crea o bariera foarte puternica la strada. the south, there is a makerspace Volumetria creaza o curte interioara ce poate fi observata din exterior din doua sensuri, insa spatiul nu se simte inca alwith an exhibition area visible from comunitatii the street. The office area is on the Eastside, and its function also corresponds vertically on the upper level. Upstairs there is the library with its reading space, and the south part is reserved for the coffee shop and its two corresponding terraces. Initially, I wanted to design three volumes connected by light courtyards and skylights, but finally, I opted for a fluid shape made out of curves that touch the blind walls at certain key A doua propunere reuseste sa o ofere gradina interioara comunitatii, insa chiar daca este retras de la limitele de proprietate, volumul de la strada creaza "ecrane" inestetice care distrug caracterul bulevardului. De asemenea, intreg points, thus forming the courtyards volumul nu se integreaza firesc in volumetrie. that acquire the functions of the adjacent spaces.

Visuals

Volumetria finala prioritizeaza nevoia de un spatiu public vegetal a comunitatii, dar si amplasamentul cladirilor extistente pe sit de-a lungul istoriei in detrimentul regulamentului de zona protejata.

The project responds to the needs of the community, trying through its integrated functions and its volume to develop welcoming spaces for all of the locals. It prioritizes the garden in the spatial scheme, giving it the central position, aligning all the other spaces around it.

Adaptive and Kinetic Pavilion for an Aerospace and Robotics Exhibition Institut of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK), Universität Stuttgart Jun.-Prof.Dr.-Ing. Maria Matheou | Dr.-Ing. Walter Haase, 5th Year (Erasmus) The primary aim of this design studio was to create an adaptive and kinetic Pavilion that follows the guiding principles of modularity, flexibility, deployability, adaptivity, interactivity, and transportability. In its contracted form, it should cover a minimum of 60 m², extending up to 120 m². In my proposal, I integrated all of these requirements through a linear structure that folds into itself designed parametrically through Grasshopper. It creates three main different spatial configurations, each of them responding to a specific exhibition layout. The pavilion can be electrically independent and can adapt to a variety of urban and natural sites. After researching various actuation methods, I opted for a simple mechanism composed of automatically actuated panels with aluminium frames and metal hinges. There are two types of panels used. The large majority of them are made of glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) a synthetic material made from recycled plastic or from sugar canes. The second type is polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) plates, which have the ability to switch between a transparent and a translucent state through an electrical connection. The wires are hidden in the aluminium frames, along with the ones needed for the wheels with integrated motors (similar to those used for hoverboards).

Regla is an industrial neighbourhood of Havana that has many ample deserted industrial areas. We have chosen such a site which was formerly a bus depot and is now no longer in use. We have created a masterplan of the area which introduces large green urban islands with a multitude of functions, each of them designed in close relation to the buildings in its vicinity. We decided to revitalise the old bus station through a process of restoration and adaptive reuse, while also designing a new building and small shading structures scattered in the area. Our main idea is to create a multifunctional start-up incubator where individuals are offered better technical conditions to harness their already existing great potential. The project brings locals and tourists together, in an otherwise not so touristic region of Havana, through its educational and cultural character.

Rethinking hotels

Hotel for athletes Carrer de la Séquia de la Cadena 4, Valencia, Spain Lect. PHD. Arch. Haytham Zeki Studio, 4th Year

The assignment was designing a hotel on a site chosen by the student after an ample urbanistic study. Due to the multiple sports centres and sports recovery centres in the area, I decided to build a hotel for athletes to meet their temporary accommodation needs. I aimed to design interesting perspectives from the park area and the boulevard, thus obtaining two main volumes. In the basement, there are technical spaces, the parking area and the hotel’s kitchen. The ground floor is completely public, locating the dining area, coffee shop, fitness room, spa and library. The accommodation function occupies the first floor, except for the extremities of the volume which hold the conference room and the entertainment area. The second floor supplements the number of rooms and offers a large terrace divided into two areas: the coffee shop and the running track.

Physical model

The window from each room has shutters whose shading can be modified by guests as needed, thus achieving a high degree of comfort and a compositional dynamic of the facade. Both by location and by volumetric solution, the building aims to reactivate an urban space that has undergone successive demolitions.

In 1998 there was a plan to widen the boulevards, but 1,651 houses had to be destroyed. The organization “Salvem el Cabanyal” opposed, fighting a legal battle with the mayor’s office. The mayor’s office set up several public corporations that forced homeowners to sell their homes at low prices, buying 500 such properties. Ultimately, in the 2000s these houses were abandoned. Even though the courts did not allow it, the mayor’s office used its influence in the local and regional council to change a series of laws that could demolish 125 houses, 28 of which were decorated in the style-specific cabanyal.

On the Black Sea coast, there is a line of fortifications built in the two World Wars by the Germans to stop a possible Russian attack from the sea. All these bunkers were abandoned and many of them were swallowed by the sea. This project proposes the reconversion of these constructions, offering them useful functions that would benefit the seaside area (coffee shop, reading area, a dock for fishermen and visiting centre). A wooden construction was built on top of one of the bunkers. This should have been a temporary installation, but it was kept as a panorama point, despite its bad structural condition. To keep this function, I proposed a metal structure in the continuation of the bunker containing a coffee shop, but also a panoramic area above it, accessible at any time from the higher elevation of the land.

Visuals

In time, the bunker slipped into the sea and buried itself into the shore. I thus opted for its erection and the introduction of a support structure. I also designed a terrace in the remaining footprint. I thus obtained three points of perspective: from the sea level, above it, in the continuation of the bunker, and on top of all these constructions, for a panoramic overview.

Ground level

Inside the bunker, I proposed a space for tourist information and an exhibition area about the history and realization of these constructions.

Individual Housing One-family home Dragos Voda 18, Bucharest, Romania Prof. PHD. Arch. Iulia Stanciu, 2nd Year

The challenge of this project was to build an individual house for a family with two children on a site specific to the outskirts of the centre of Bucharest. This lot has the approximate dimensions of 30m in length and 6m opening to the street, being surrounded on all remaining sides by blind walls. Thus, I had to reinterpret Bucharest’s specific typology of the wagon house. I did not want to forgo the garden, which is such an important element of house living, to the detriment of the built space. I thus managed to propose the division of spaces through the planted areas themselves, creating a visual delimitation by the size of the tree crown. On the ground floor, the windows are made from movable glass panels that can be opened. Consequently, the boundaries between the natural and the built environment become very blurred, inviting the garden inside. From a functional point of view, the building proposes an office area accessible from the entrance space, the dining area in the garden, in close relation with the vestibule and the access area, the kitchen area with the indoor dining space and the living area which opens onto the garden. Upstairs, the vertical circulation node functionally separates the volume into two areas: the one for children, with the two bedrooms and the two study areas, and the master bedroom with its terrace.

Educational centre School for the Dramatic Arts Bd. Ferdinand I 60, Bucharest, Romania Lect. PHD. Arch. Andra Panait, 3rd Year

I designed a school for the dramatic arts since there are multiple acting workshops in the area that require a permanent space. Thus, the building could be used as a traditional learning place (high school with vocational profile), but also as an alternative space where anyone is welcome to study the dramatic arts. The two main volumes cover the blind walls and create a path inside the plot. The structure towards the street contains the public part of the ensemble, namely: the lobby area with a high ceiling with half floors where photography or painting exhibitions are organized, the performance hall with a rehearsal room and storage areas, and the restaurant open to the garden. The other volume is designed for classrooms. The two structures are connected through the library. In the basement of the complex, there are technical spaces, a parking area and the restaurant preparation space. The access to the parking lot is made from the adjacent street, under the steps that have multifunctional use. They can function as outside meeting space for young people or urban furniture, as well as bleachers for spectators when outdoor theatre performances are organized in the specially arranged area. Access to the classrooms can be made both from the boulevard and from the adjacent street.

Resulting work from the “Viaggio in Italia - Chasing Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities” workshop organized in the 1st Yeat. My team chose the invisible city of Valdara, represented through the urban aesthetics of Venice. Thus, we combined the artistic emotion given by the writings with the meanings and the admosphere transmitted by this real city, resulting in an architectural paper object without a beginning or an end, without edges, forever continuing its dynamic where the upper-city becomes its reflection in the water and vice-versa. The original city is no longer known, the observer can no longer distinguish the real from the imaginary. The city is forever lost in an infinite loop.
