INTRODUCTION On the background of the competition program the proposal of the revitalisation of Trygve Lies plass is based on two main themes; namely motion and emotion. When you travel or are in motion, you experience it as a spatial journey, but mobility is more than flow of people and how effective we can get from A to B. It is about associations, that not only depends on the spatial context and social situations, but the qualities of the transport and communication. Problems surrounding congestion and mobility therefore have to take our emotional experience of movement into account. The urban picture, especially in motion, impacts our thoughts, feelings and behaviour more than we might think.

CONCEPT The challenge is how Trygve Lies plass can be transformed into a green mobility hub that reduce socio-cultural challenges and add value. To examine Trygve Lies plass as a smart hub, it is not enough to look at economical, environmental and social sustainability. We have to explore the physical, mobile and psychological sustainable values as well. None of these values are necessarily more important than others and should be seen in parallel. The main themes of motion and emotion will be seen through these six values, and are the gel that holds the design together. This can only be achieved if people and their quality of life are put first. The legibility and sensorial surroundings of Trygve Lies plass are more important than the matter of time it takes to move through the site, because the perception of movement is more important than the functional efficiency of getting from A to B. So by having sensorial and interesting surroundings, the time of transit will also feel shorter. This means that the square not only will work as an efficient mobility hub, but also will be a successful urban space that is liveable and pleasant to be in. We have therefore worked with language of space, clarity and legibility that the users can easily comprehend as part of the bigger picture. It is important to make a square that is barrier free, both physically and perceptionally.

STRATEGIES A transparent square Create a TRANSPARENT and interactive relationship between inside and outside, that lead to a commercial regeneration. The design of the square shall accommodate needs of local businesses to further develop and establish attractive new services. A welcoming square The site will be designed with a WELCOMING environment that connects green transport thinking with green design, meet the future climate change and handle the rainwater locally. An attractive square The square shall be an ATTRACTIVE link where people can meet, exchange ideas and transfer between transport modes. An accessible square An open and highly ACCESSIBLE square will lead to a more user friendly, efficient, comfortable and secure environment that are easy to read. This again will encourage walking and bicycling. A liveable square Make the square into a LIVEABLE, multifunctional space for everyone, and enhance public amenity and social values, by providing safe, comfortable, interesting streets and squares to the pedestrian. A square that enhance well-being To create a bright environment that focus on peoples WELL-BEING, with good readability, restorative effects and exciting waiting time.

6

HIERARCHIES Social objectives and networks comes before commercial objectives to restrict barriers to movement and create well-being. People, atmosphere and social life should be in the centre before transportation, infrastructure and programming. Transport systems should serve people, not infrastructure, since transfers is mostly on foot.

By designing a place for disabled people rather than commuters, the standard of the site rises.

By designing for easy way-finding and access, the square becomes a more pleasant connections and attracts more users of all age groups. This again is economically beneficial for commerce and retail.

7

DESCRIPTION STRUCTURE & SPACE | Welcoming shapes The square will first and foremost have open, coherent and organic shapes and expressions, whichever direction you come from. It can resemble a golf course type landscape with curves rather than sharp angels, that the human mind prefer. This will immediately make the square feel more welcoming. The emphasis has been to focus on physical comfort, ease of access and legibility. The square is divided into three parts that overlap each other; the main transit zone in the south, the core in the middle and the park in the north. The layout has been strategically designed so people can “see without being seen” and have their “back against the wall”.

The park

• The transit zone: All the bus traffic is gathered on Bygaten, causing a fluent transition to the core and metro/mall. This is spacious and open to make room for travel, boarding, waiting and information.

The core

• The core: This space works as a link between the transit zone and the park, between bus and metro, as well as the inside and outside of the metro/mall. Having a civic space outside the entrance will further define the transport hub, and becomes a medium for connection. The space will work as a multifunctional space that accommodates space for life with seating, meeting, trade, outdoor dining and parking. The main entrance to the metro must be visible, open and articulating.

The transit zone

Three areas

8

The square will have a form of airiness to it, with simple lines and readily comprehended routes. Consumers are influenced by the quality of design, or else they wont use it. Therefore, the place has a keen focus on aesthetic configuration, with interest at the arrival and departure point. It is a fine balance between order and complexity. Too much order makes the place boring, and too much complexity can make the place hard to comprehend.

• The park: There will be a gradual transition between the core and the park, leading to a more enclosed landscape. This will create positive spaces which makes people feel more comfortable. Some of the current trees will be kept, along with a new pond, market, play and rest, this will enhance recreational and restorative values.

INFRASTRUCTURE & FLOW | Shaped by our footsteps The basis for the design of the new Trygve Lies plass is an analysis of pedestrian movement across the square. The built elements on the square are designed to lie between the main flow lines of people and express the daily flow of movement, to make it as optimal and effective as possible. This focus will ease peoples orientation, give breathing space and a sense of direction. Movement in all directions with limited barriers will also generate economic growth corridors. Rather than having to many signs, the users of the square will be guided by the urban landscape and design. To many signs make people frustrated and exhausted. With articulating design that express fluidity and directions, the transit will happen more naturally, and the perception of movement will feel easier. In this case, the square is designed so there are direct sight lines between the bus stop, bicycle parking and metro/mall entrance. In this way the transportation systems can be seen, not imagined. The shared space on the site is an approach to create a safer environment by minimizing the segregation of pedestrians, bicycles and buses. Kids and elderly, together with disabled and visually impaired people, will have difficulties to follow and understand this system. Therefore, it is created routes which is reserved for flow on the pedestrians terms. Space for pedestrians is the key element in shopping streets. If pedestrians can move safely and effortlessly, it will generate more trade.

TRANSPORTATION | Bikes at the centre Walk Walking will, as described in the program, be the highest prioritized form of transportation, because it is healthy and good for the environment. This means that all other form of transportation will give way for pedestrians. Walking can be a barrier for some people, especially if the distance exceed 200 meters. This will not be a problem at the site. But the hight difference at the site can be demotivating for some. Therefore it has been decided to make the altitude difference less steep, to reduce both the physical and psychological barrier. Bicycle The bicycles will have a central role at the site, without creating interaction with the pedestrians or stand in the way. The cyclist will have marked paths through the square. It is essential that the cyclist can come to the site, park their bike and go to the mall/metro/bus in one continuous motion, without having to turn around. This will help on the motivation and make it more attractive to use the bicycle. In the evening and at night the parking will be lit by LED bulbs so people always can find their bike.

There will mainly be five bicycle parking on the square. They are all safe, attractive, sheltered and barrier free, and slightly lowered in the ground. In total they accommodate 250 bicycles, as well as having charging stations for electrical bikes, city-bicycles and space for transport bikes. The main bicycle parking in the middle of the site will mainly be for day parking and is part of the green mobility centre. This will be described further under Activities & Programming. The other four will be for short-term parking. The car park under ground will also accommodate lockable automatic night parking.

Bus The bus stops are placed and designed so they do not prevent the flow of pedestrians. The bus will have dedicated lanes on the same level as the pavement and square, but the platforms will be slightly raised to make the boarding and alighting easier. The concept is that they will be bright and elongated, so they create a sense of direction, feel safe and take up as little space as possible. The electrical charging station is placed on Søren Bulls vei. Car The cars are able to reach the square from S4 and S5. The existing parking garage is kept the way it is under ground, and extended towards south to meet the underground road, and towards east to be part of the new parking garage. Access by foot are in to the mall and on to the square. The use of parking spaces are prioritized for handicapped, car poolers, park and ride users, electric vehicles and service cars.

SURFACE & MATERIALS | Adapted We usually walk with our eyes looking at the surface (for natural reasons and technological reasons). Surface and materials are therefore vital when it comes to movement, but it is also important for the squares environment and identity. High quality materials and light spaces increase peoples satisfaction level. Therefore it has been put focus into robust, durable, attractive and easily maintained materials, that are culturally - and environmentally acceptable.

Illustrates that people are prioritized, but guided and warned by the surroundings.

• Movement The goal is that the surface will guide people as effective as signs and signals by using visual contrasts. The surface are in general light, matte and a bit rough paving stones, to be more slip resistant. It will still be comfortable for wheelchairs, prams and bicycles. Soft, noise absorbing materials and vegetation will be used to reduce the reverberation time, as well as noise cancelling surface materials. To illustrate movement paths, the paving will show a direction by adding them sideways. To illustrate stay, the pavement is darker. This will be used where people can sit, at the bicycle parking and at the bus stop. These nuances will then differentiate between movement and stay. The bus paths have darker edges so pedestrians and bicyclists are aware of the possibility of buses crossing the square. This is also the case for the bicycle paths, that have red edges, the same colour as a normal bicycle path. • Environment For environmental reasons it is used permeable ecological paving stones that are designed to reduce storm water runoff and pollution. It is also desirable to reuse/recycle timber, slate or other building materials from local buildings. • Identity Considering the identity of the place, it is sought to achieve a visual language with a blend between nordic coolness and references from around the world, to provide local identity that is accepted by the community. This means that light, matte colours, hardwood, glass and greenery are combined with colourful furniture and equipment that reflect and enhance an international identity.

12

FURNITURE & EQUIPMENT | Urban mood The square is designed with strategic places seating groups to amplify an urban mood, with high degree of functionality and ease of replacement. Some furniture are more fixed, while others can be moved around to adapt to certain situations, like a festival. Having places to sit and watch helps to get a better understanding of the overall picture. This is one of the activities that describes what it is to be human. The benches are made of wood to be comfortable both in winter and summer time. In addition to the furniture it will be secondary seating, like stairs and edges. The agora, the clock and the statue of Trygve Lie are among the landmarks that make the routes more memorable. Art can entertain the passengers, raise the spirit and encourage reflection. A centrally located clock and electronic screens with real time information above entry points, are essential at a transport hub. The statue reminds people of the history at the site.

COMMERCE | Transport attracts investment The mall will direct people between the bus stops, bicycle parking and metro. This has the potential of diversifying income. A very important strategy is to open up the mall, making it more extrovert towards the square, and having commercial space outside. In this case the market, the kiosk and outdoor serving. This makes a better relation between commerce, transportation and flow. Markets can, however, provide a structure and a regulatory framework that helps grow small businesses (job creation), preserve food safety, and make a more attractive destination for shoppers. Companies want to be located where there are good transport connections, not just roads, but rail, bus, cycleways and walkways. It is possible to give economical support to the local companies because of their location close to the public transportation systems. The market value of the site can be expected to grow by making it resilient to climate change. The urban environment which is already an attraction for visitors, can then be reinforced and maintained in the future.

The market and an extroverted mall will benefit from each other.

14

UNIVERSAL DESIGN, SAFETY & SECURITY | A place for everyone To get as many people as possible to use the site and public transportation, universal design is necessary. First of all the focus has been to avoid barriers, level changes and stairs. This makes it physically possible to use the site for everyone. People have different levels of mobility and fitness, therefore the emphasis has been to create level surfaces, smooth pavements and seating areas for less mobile people such as those with disabilities, children and elderly. Rounded corners reduces the risk of impact damage to the interchange and injury to passengers. Navigation is made easier for everyone by having linear lines (platforms/sight lines etc.), guidelines for visually disabled people, spacious multipurpose areas, elevators, road studs, tactile warning pavement, HC parking and less signs. But instead of having a “one-size-fits-all” design, it has changed to an adaptable one. Responsive street design is used to adapt to peoples need. This includes brighter street lighting, audio information and more places to sit. It means that light will shine brighter when people are in movement. Solar LED lighting will for example mark the bicycle path in the dark. The open space on the square can facilitate a variety of activities and needs. To make it into a safe and comfortable environment at all times it is important with “eyes on the street” and light. The surrounding buildings, especially the mall, will have people overlooking the square. The presence of furniture, bicycle parking and the agora, will also generate a feeling of people present, and make it more comfortable. With high-quality design and an open landscape with no backsides or dark corners, there will be more social behaviour and fewer places for muggers to operate. Another strategy to make people feel safe is to create a form of community at the site.

Movement paths

15

COMMUNITY & IDENTITY | Integrating space Because of immigration, globalization and new technology it is inevitable with general and functional design. But that does not mean that the result have to be boring. The new Trygve Lies plass will have an environment with optimal level of complexity, trying to increase peoples well-being. To integrate all kind of people can be hard, but it is always some elements humans have in common, and that include trade, nature and water. The square is a place for transportation and trade, but also a place where people can gather and come to rest. By having access points in every direction, identity and community can be created together with the wider surrounding. People will be able to identify themselves with others as well as the surrounding environment. A social regeneration and welfare can also create dignity and hospitality for travellers, but acceptance of strangers happens more gradually.

Meeting areas

16

The site is sufficiently varied, with offerings that attract many different users. The presence of trade, services, cultural facilities, various dining options and events will draw people. Children and elderly are prioritized. Informal meetings will happen between inside and outside the shopping mall, cafĂŠs, community halls, the library, etc. These places are adapted for stay and seating opportunities. Local exhibition and places for students to work are also part of the plan. A good solution would be to have free wifi. This will lead to more people in the square and people working in the square, which again gives a feeling of more safety. Facilities and availability for more people make it easier to accept each other and can generate a sense of ownership. Having more of these opportunities at the site, can hopefully create the feeling of community (emotion in motion) and the reputation and image of the place is bound to change.

NATURE & GREENERY | Doubly

Reed

Nature playground

Reed

As mentioned the existing birch trees will be kept. They are an important asset for the identity and atmosphere of the square, and can also remove toxins from the air, have an restorative impact on humans, be valuable for birds and animals (biodiversity), and take up rainwater.

Wetland

From the street you can not see all of the greenery at the site. The roofs on the bicycle parking are covered with grass and moss and will attract more city birds. In addition to providing a beautiful green touch, at least viewed from the mall, the grass will also absorb rainwater. The park is designed with both grass and reeds on the ground. The grass will be the main surface in the “forest, while the reed will be used as a visual addition and a place to store stormwater. The greenery, together with the water, will provide recreation and a sensual event giving rise to reflection, which is a prerequisite for our daily life, especially in the stressful environment our cities are. The park will be the green oasis at the site. It will promote health and activity, recreation and restorative values. Greener surroundings makes us feel happier and safer, and tend to lower rates of incivilities and crime. Children will be able to play with the water or at the nature playground.

Greenery

Illustration showing the stream with waterplay and nature playground

17

CLIMATE & HYDROLOGY | Water as a tool The stream have been lifted above ground, adding another dimension to the site. The main task of the the stream is to work as a wet pond, handling the rainwater from the roof tops and the surface. The pond will always have permanent water, together with the waterplay. When it rains, the park, green roofs and other greenery will take up water. When they can not handle the rain, the pond will be filled. The water will be led to the pond in water drains. Under heavier rainfall, the wetland next to the stream will come into use. Here the water can be filtered or cleansed by the vegetation. Under extreme situations, the reeds, as well as the grass can handle more water since it lies lower in the ground. By having this water more visible in the city, more people are aware of nature and climate, and hopefully get more knowledge about climate change. It is possible to reuse water for cleaning, local plant irrigation, fabric cooling, and toilet flushing (rain/roof water). This all depends on how the surrounding buildings will turn out. Hopefully the square will have as much natural light and ventilation as possible, creating a good local climate that can take advantage of the sun.

Hydrology

18

ENERGY | More self-sufficient The site, together with the new building structures, should be more self-sufficient. The big amount of roof space on the mall can be equipped with solar cells that contribute to the buildings energy consumption (including the mobility centre). The roof should also have white surface to prevent heat islands, and have space for greenery and roof terraces. And if possible let in some direct sunlight. This is the intended solution on the square, letting light into the parking garage under ground. The openings will also create better ventilation and articulate floors below. Street lighting can use solar energy, or even wind energy. Solar roadways can also be tested. This can be used as lighting, but also warming to get rid of snow. Snow and ice can be dangerous and are not ideal to promote bicycle use or public transportation. At the same time snow have a calming effect and can reduce noise and reverberation time at the site. Instead of using wind energy and solar panels with limited product lifetimes, geothermal systems can be a good choice. Since the temperature under ground are relatively stable, it can be used as heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Having green materials and green energy sends out an important message to the users, just like hydrological solutions.

19

EXPERIENCES | Time & restoration

Soundscape | Current

One of the values we have tried to work in is psychological comfort, sensory delight and the feeling of well-being. This means that the square should have an restorative effect so people can feel that they are in a different place and can take a “break” from the busy mobility hub. The meeting with the park will emphasize and reinforce a kind of educational sensuality that invite reflection by highlighting nature, rainwater and the city’s many circuits. The site is designed with human scale, which is important for people’s well-being. Moving through the site will provide changes from light to shade, hot to cold, from noise to silence, and different smells and engaging streetscapes. At the same time the emphasis has been on the presence of time, and make the time go faster while waiting. By having entertainment, memorable experiences and things to look at on the route and by the transportation stops, the time feels shorter. The space is also easy to read, by having good view, articulated entrances and few signs. One important factor that often people forget is the aural quality or the soundscape. Responsive sound and light will be used to add a sense of fun and curiosity. Imagen walking on the square, and the reeds suddenly light up in contact with people or rain, or even artificial sounds of birds or songs.

Soundscape | Future

light that shows the metro (from above ground) - light above ground that illustrates the rail • Before The situation at Trygve Lies plass today, is that people have to deal with a good deal of traffic noise. That makes the site quite unconformable sometimes. Most of all bus, but also taxis, private cars and transportation of goods dominates the site and put the pedestrians second.

Use smartphone to listen to how the square sounds in the present and how it will sound in the future.

20

• After The new Trygve Lies plass will give people and their senses more space. In that way people also feel more safe, and it will probably be beneficial for the community, trade and life in the streets. We sense a great deal with our ears, therefore it will be a great advantage to relax and listen to the natural sounds undisturbed by external, extraneous noise.

ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMMING | Multifunctional & mixed-use Green mobility centre The current parking garage will be reused/remade as a green mobility centre to a great extent. Only the surface parking will be taken away. One half will be made into a plain surface, while the other will be changed into the main bicycle parking. This will have room for around 160 bicycles. In addition there will be made a lockable automatic night parking on the level below. A big benefit with the main bicycle parking is that the “roof” can be used as a normal surface, and the bicycles fills less space in the landscape visually. Here it is possible to sit and play. In the winter time it will look much like a snow cave. For it to be rewarding to use the bicycle and to take public transportation the commuters will be able to work, read, eat, use the laptop by the mobility hub and on the square. It can also be possible to have a lockable closets for clothing and equipment, a fitness room and toilets. Both the mobility centre and the transit zone will accommodate tools and pumps for the bicycle users. A traffic counter and a bicycle store are also recommended features to have at the site to promote bicycle use. The Agora The Agora will be a place for art, music and culture. This will be an installation where people can gather with friends and neighbours, and even an installation that attracts new people. Both the structure itself and the immediate space around it. The Agora can be used by everyone from the local schools or clubs that want to host shows and performances, local artists that use it for exhibitions, to the Furuset festival. The central location makes people interact with it every day. By inviting the local people, it will enhance the feeling of ownership towards the place and decrease the risk of the place being vandalized. A clever way to use the Agora and the space around it is interactive art. This invite the audience to be take part of the installation. The art piece will not always be virtual, but it either connects or “asks” people to join in and to interact. People have a chance to take an active role, for example with use of sensors that react to heat or motion. This is a fun way to experience new places and meet new people, and will become a new meeting point. The social setting that occurs creates trust and could tear down boundaries and prejudices between cultures and different age groups.

THE MALL & METRO STATION | Outside the competition area The new mall will have dramatic impact on how the square is used. Buildings have to be designed to support places. Open and lively facades causes more people to pause, look around, walk and absorb the cityscape. The mall should get vertical facades that are more transparent and can be opened up, which will make a better and easier connection between inside and outside. It is important that the major route are lofty allowing light and natural ventilation. By guiding people inside the mall we can get better use of space, better connection between inside and outside, shorter distances (people will chose it anyway) and better customer bases. It is recommended that the closest store to the main bicycle parking facilitates a bicycle shop with rental bikes. By opening up the metro it gets better ventilation as well, and better availability in case of fire. It has to be easy to find the way to the metro, unlike today. Therefore it has to be identified as an urban space where people can see their goal. This will enhance the feeling of safety and security.

The main entrance to the mall/metro should have an inside/outside feeling.
