sweet disposition

08

Summertime is my favorite time of the year. To me it means warm days, lounging by the pool, quality time spent with friends, traveling and lots and lots of ice cream. Some of my favorite memories growing up have stemmed from the adventures and experiences I went through during my summers, and this edition captures that emotion. Earlier this month the beautiful city of Savannah was seen through the eyes of one of the Nylon Girls. I love that the Nylon girl can be anyone and that she isn’t afraid of who she wants to be. Like in 4:1 (see page 12)and in Hybrid (see page 24) you can see her personality and style shine.

She has fun whether its with her friends playing billiards shown in [Latifa’s Editorial Name] (see pg 32) or even lounging by herself by the pool like in Summertime Solace (see pg 48). This month we interviewed two emerging artists photographer Kristopher Dobbins interviewed by Laryssa Tertuliano and the fashion designer, Stephanie Larck of Jaseeo interviewed by Latifa Simmons - their passion for their crafts is truly inspiring and I encourage everyone to look them up through social media.

charm If you are into a little bit of history and paranormal activity, Savannah is the place for you. In recent years Savannah has tried to find a way to keep its authentic and historic charm, but provide a modern experience for those who visit. In the downtown area, you can find independent businesses, galleries and restaurants that attract people from all walks of life. Take a trolley tour and see all the major historic sites, or just walk around and see where it takes you. Bonaventure Cementery 330 Bonaventure Rd. Going to the cemetery isn’t

Forsyth Park Drayton St. & E. Park Ave “The Central Park of

Savannah” is the perfect spot torelax with a picnic and a stroll. It’s a shared favorite of locals and visitors because of its beautiful tree lined sidewalks and fountains and because at any given time the park becomes the hosts of concerts, plays, music festivals and even an outdoor movie theater a few times a year.

SCAD Museum of Art 601 Turner Blvd. SCAD owns a few

galleries in Savannah but they are all incomparable to their museum of art. It was a former train station turned into a museum and in 2011 it was renovated with the help of the schools architecture department. They have works of art of all different mediums. For the fashion enthusiast it holds a gallery space where Andre Leon Talley curates exhibitions of famous designers work such as Oscar de la Renta, Francisco Costa, Ralph Rucci and is currently exhibiting Vivienne Westwood’s greatest pieces up until September.

River Street

It’s the one-stop-shop for

the Savannah experience. It has a lot of historical value, a beautiful view of the Savannah River and Talmadge Bridge. Great southern food. Shopping. And good music ranging from bohemian to country. Throughout the year River Street is the host of many fairs and activities but nothing compares the St. Patrick Day’s weekend celebrations when millions of people flood the streets of Savannah and head to River Street to celebrate with some green beer.

typically on everyone’s top list of places to visit while on vacation, but when in Savannah, the second most haunted city in America, it can only make sense. A lot of important people that contributed to Savannah’s history lay there, but what really attract people to visit are the stories of paranormal activity that have been documented there. So if you want a little spook make sure to visit Gracie during your visit to Bonaventure.

Kristopher Dobbins IN CONVERSATION WITH LARYSSA TERTULIANO

Specialized in Editorial Portrait & Fashion photographer based in Texas. He earned an award for the most Outstanding in Photography (Kilgore College, 2013). And he had his portraits in exhibition such as #CreativesRising digital; Times Square, New York City. LT: Why did you choose photography? KD: I chose photography because Rufus Lovett, my mentor whom I love to death. He just left an imprint on me that photography is more than just a photo. The way he is passionate about photography made me want to be just as passionate about it. He showed me the skill I had and now he is watching me grow. LT: What do you like to photograph most? KD: People. I love portraits. I love when people tell me they are not photogenic and then after they see the photograph they are like wow that’s me? It makes me feel like I’ve shown them a hidden part of themselves. LT: How would you describe your style as a photographer? KD: My style as a photographer is more classical. It’s very simple and has stylized portraits like Richard Avedon and Arnold Newman.

All Images courtesy of Kristopher Dobbins

LT: Who is your favorite artist? KD: My favorite artist would have to be Kanye West; even though he is a musician to me his songs are art. The way he presents them are art. He is a very talented person and all his work has a very cinematic feel to it. I love that he is still pursuing new dreams even when people don’t support him or his family. It’s so refreshing to see someone who has “made it” still trying to climb the ladder with the same ambition as if he hasn’t “made it”. LT: Do you have a favorite picture from your work? KD: I don’t (lol). All my photos are like my babies. It’s like having children… you can’t choose a favorite! LT: So, I’m going to choose my favorite one from your work for this interview. What is something that only you know how to do? KD: I don’t think there is one thing I can do that others can’t. LT: How about the funniest situation that you havefaced? KD: (Lol) when one of my classmates told me I inspire them and they wanted to be just like me and I was like all you have to do is shoot and pretend to know what you are doing. LT: I’m curious, where do you see yourself in 10 years? KD: In 10 years hopefully I have at least successful businesses running along with being a household name in the portrait and fashion photography world. andy pruitt shot by kristopher dobbins

a fruity floral affair Closely connected with music and performance, Burberry has launched their new fragrance ‘Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women.’ Burberry designer Christopher Bailey says “Brit Rhythm is aiming to capture the emotion, excitement and attitude attached to live music. It’s really that kind of adrenaline feeling that you get from music. It’s a sexy fragrance because I think there is a sexiness to that kind of rock ‘n’ roll world.” If anyone is a lavender lover out here, this is the ideal scent to wear. Burberry Brit Rhythm introduces an aromatic and fresh English lavender. This perfume smell left us in a spring garden- making us feel breezy and clean. A relief from all those fruity-florals. Jaseeo INTERVIEWED BY LATIFA SIMMONS

Wearing the new American brand Jaseeo will make onlookers easily mistake you for a celebrity. The Jaseeo line is all about demanding attention and showing off one’s essence, a feat that the brand does effortlessly. Stephanie Larck is the founder and creative genius behind the Jaseeo fashion brand. And to think that it all started with her playing dress up with her mother’s clothes and accessories as a child... “Ahh, brings the fondest of memories,” recalls Stephanie. “It marked the discovery of my passion for fashion, [chuckles] as corny as that sounds.” Born August 27, 1984, and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Stephanie is definitely a southern lady with a sweet accent and manners to match. Savannah is home to her personal life and life in fashion. The Jaseeo line is in ways reminiscent to this childhood memory with its vibrant hues. The line’s cool use of denim and leather adds We chatted with Stephanie about her newly emerging brand and her happy beginnings with fashion. Read on to get the scoop on Steph. What do you define as fashion? To me, knowing who you are ensures your confidence in yourself. And when you are confident in yourself, you feel a freedom to wear what is comfortable to you, what compliments your personality and style, and what defines you. That is what fashion is to me, wearing what is you. Where did your love for fashion begin? When I was a little girl, I use to love my mother’s clothes and jewelry. I would play dress up and put on makeup [chuckles]. I’d say my interest grew from there. And at about age eleven or twelve, I picked up the needle and thread. I remember I made a purse out of a pair of jeans for a school mate. My interest just grew more with discovery and experimenting.

046

In your school years, did you use your wardrobe to express yourself? Most definitely! Everything my Mom or I bought for myself, I would change it up by making it how I wanted it to look. When I would get a shirt, skirt, or dress I would run and add to it or take away from it to change it up to my own look. How do you think others perceived you and your craft? I was never afraid to dress or design outside of the box. I’d like to think others knew me to be far from ordinary [grins]. What exactly is Jaseeo? How’d that name come about? The name Jaseeo is a spin off of my daughter’s name, Ja’Sonay. The family and I call her “Jasey” as a nick name and her middle name is O’Neisha. So what I did was link her nickname with the first letter of her middle name, and it sounded very catchy. You know, like, a high end brand name.

How do you see a woman wearing your designs? My designs screams diva. Confident. Self-expression. I want the woman to feel this way and look the part all while walking down the street. She’ll definitely turn heads. For sure. Who were some artists and icons you looked up to as inspiration? From childhood to my teens, I would say Sean (Puffy) combs, Rachael Zoe and Oscar de la Renta. More recently, I would say Jason Wu and Lady Gaga. Who in Fashion, do you believe, is on the top of the game? As for a designer, I would say Jason Wu again. He really is killin’ it right now. I will also say Rihanna is hot right now. She is definitely killin’ it right now. I love her! What other muses and forms of art inspire you and your designs? I really enjoy poetry and music. They really inspire me and relax me. I always put myself in an environment where I can view photography to be inspired too. I love viewing paintings, fashion posters and skimming through magazines to social networks to grab inspiration and see something new. What past decade do you think was great for fashion? Hmm, 2000 to 2010. What was the worst? Definitely 1990 to 1999. What’s your obsession? Instagram. Instagram. Instagram. Oh, and Instagram! What country would you like to someday travel to and why? My all-time dream is to go to Paris and London. I want to see all of the beauty, history, arts and fashion of these cities. Mostly the fashion. I dream to one day expand my business and have the women in Paris and London rockin’ Jaseeo.
