A Letter From The Editors A term that represents something that is badly put together. The editors of “Incondite” feel this is an appropriate title considering what the media has done to today’s popular culture. We try to capture the other side of pop culture, by talking less about the mainstream and focusing more about the underground aspects of it. In this issue, you’ll learn more about a local, teenage band called The Diving Captain on page 5, and if you’re an art fan, you can check out the “Chalk Master” article by Daniel, on page 24. If you’re in need of a new hairstlye, check out Ashley’s hair-style guide on page 27, Johan’s “Drinks Down” article for a captivating opinion, page 36. And if you’re in to movies, go read Hallie’s movie review over Knowing on page 21! Each member had their own idea on what kind of magazine we should create; music, food and fashion were all thrown out there. In the end we decided to combine every one’s idea for our magazine and “Incondite” the pop culture and entertainment magazine was created. We worked hard on this magazine, so as you read our magazine, enjoy it!

Ween to the Extreme

By Daniel G.

“Out of nowhere, out of a total musical vacuum, out of total darkness comes one, ONE, ONE, ONE, one ray of light. And its f*!&king Ween.” That’s what Black Flag front man Henry Rollins had to say after one of American rock band Weens’ earliest performances in 1990. Ever since, Weens’ odd and experimental music has attracted fans and gained them some worst enemies. But no matter what the haters say, the fans will always stand up and speak their minds. “They’re artists, they’re true artists because they do things in a spirit of adventurous experimentation. They

3

know that a lot of those things are going to work out terribly, but they don’t care, they get up and just keep playing,” said Corey Snyder, an avid Ween fan, disk jockey, and high school English teacher. The Ween lovers are a very interesting group of people. Ween has always had a love/hate relationship with the world, you either love them to death, or hate them. It’s difficult to find those who say “yeah, they’re ok, I listen to them sometimes.” The fans say this is because Ween always plays different genres; they never stick to one idea. The haters accept this theory, but because of the weirdness and crazy ex-

perimentation, they claim that Ween is making fun of music and trying to give the genres a bad name. Ween made their first single in 1993 with their song “Push th’ Little Daises” from the Pure Guava record. But many fans say their next record, Chocolate and Cheese is their definitive best work, including Corey. “And finally, I got Chocolate and Cheese…Somebody just gave me a copy. So I’d thought that was the most brilliant thing I’d heard in forever so then I was sold, I got way into them.”

However, there are also the fans lot of hate resides. that say it is impossible to pick On the opposite end of the a favorite. They claim the music spectrum, the haters are just is so diverse that even trying to as (maybe even more) plenty pick a favorite would be one of as the fans. Excluding Planet Earth Althea’s formulation of her CD By: Hallie C.

I

I“t’s too early for autographs,” Althea says, sporting a black sweater and jeans, her hair in a tight ponytail. Althea was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but came too Austin when she was still very young. Her full name, Althea Soucie Garza was considered to long to be memorable thus the stage name, Althea Capra was born. After a semester of high school spent working gigs and writing new songs, her new CD is almost done. Althea’s band, which consists of a funkbass player, a gospel style

home-schooled piano player, and whichever drummer happens to be available at the time, has all their songs recorded. The main problem is, “The way a CD works, since we’re not spending all our time in California all our recordings are done in local studios, which aren’t as high-tech,” Althea says. The new songs still need to be remixed, rerecorded, and some tracks changed before it can be released. “The people in California were going crazy ‘cause of the Emmys,” Althea said. But according to her, now that things

are calmed down she expects things to move along much faster. “Everything in the music industry runs on an opposite sleeping cycle than school,” said Althea. To compensate, she had begun the AISD Virtual School Program, which allows its users through a school issued laptop, too complete school assignments on their own schedule. It is similar to Rosetta stone, except pertaining to all subjects. But that was earlier this year. With more free time Althea has returned to school for all her classes

with the exception of Planet Earth and a song-writing elective. It is still uncertain at this point as to whether she will remain at LASA next year or return to the online schooling. But that was earlier this year. With more free time Althea has returned to school for all her classes with the exception of Planet Earth and a song-writing elective. It is still uncertain at this point as to whether she will remain at LASA next year or return to the online schooling. “If anything it’s very inconsistent. My life’s very unpredictable right now,” said Althea. One of the large problems with going to school is that she sometimes has to go anywhere from a few days to a whole week without school to record, write, or play her songs. Because of this Althea goes to tutoring to makeup work regularly, but it is often rather challenging to balance. “I could postpone tests but they pile-up,” Althea sighs, the hardest class to keep up with being math.

On a day-to-day basis Althea is supposed to do one to five hours of vocal exercises, though it sometimes isn’t equivalent to that amount of time. She plays the guitar, piano, and harmonica, all of which she taught herself to play; though singing remains her favorite musical instrument.

“I felt silly running around telling people how great I was.” -Althea Capra “I’ve been [singing] forever, but I’ve been performing since I was ten,” Althea said. Her rising fame has not increased her ego and she has not pointed out any new performances she has to anyone other than her good friends or those who ask. “You sit next to someone at lunch and you don’t suddenly tell a huge story,” Althea points out. When she first began performing at clubs she

spent a good deal of time handing out fliers and trying to gain a familiar audience. Althea said, “I felt silly running around telling people how great I was.” Some people don’t always want the latest news. “Most people you talk too either want to know everything or have little or no explanation,” Althea said. But despite this Althea gathers a good audience and many new fans when she performs at her regular locations; the Nutty Brown Café and Ruth Maya to name a few, but she won’t be performing again soon because of the recording and CD production. Althea plans on returning to LASA though is still unsure. “It’s kind of strange not knowing” she says. She wants a bonified record deal, so the return to school is to be or last. If she does return though, next year she’ll be selling her new CD and taking the long put-off Planet Earth class; finally.

Thirteen-year-old Alina Vega sits at her kitchen table, dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, rehearsing her lines for her upcoming musical, Wanda’s World. She is involved in a local theater group called Zachary Scott Showstoppers. “I’ve always loved acting,” she said, “I haven’t been involved in theater that long but I hope I can do a real main-stage musical.” Alina has been interested in choir and theater since she was a little girl. Someday, she dreams of becoming a professional performer on Broadway. “I know a few people who have gone and done professional musicals,” she said, “I hope to get into that.”

Believing In Broadway By Ashley L.

Alina is working very hard managing school, theater and everything in between. Starting back in September, she has been rehearsing four hours or more every week. This might not sound like much to the average person, but in rehearsals it’s tough. “Lately [rehearsals] have been increasing because of the production. They are intense,” she said. “The choreography is pretty hard, and vocally it’s hard.” In a way, Alina started theater to challenge herself at something that she loved. Alina was considering school choir and theater, but Zach Scott hit it out of the park for her. “I thought about doing choir at school, but the mu-

sic didn’t seem challenging enough,” she said. However, Zachary Scott was. “It’s hard. You have to drink a lot of water!” Although Alina has been around acting and film her whole life, that isn’t what got her started in theater, it was summer camps at Zachary Scott. “I started when I was really young doing one weeklong summer camp every year,” she said. “Then I got invited to a special summer camp and one a year later. Then I got a letter in the mail saying ‘You’ve been accepted to the Zach Showstoppers’”. Her first production, called Wanda’s World, opened in January of 2009. “It’s a musical about

a girl named Wanda who struggles to be accepted,” said Alina. “She has a fantasy TV show, called Wanda’s World, and is able to make her fantasy become a reality.” In this musical, Alina plays a sports announcer in the song, “Blow Them Away”. In other scenes, she plays a jock. “I actually really do enjoy sports,” she said. “So I think it does relate to my personality.” Alina isn’t the only person in her family that has to make sacrifices for theater. Her parents and younger brother, Will, also dedicate a lot of their time to watching performances and taking her to practices. “It’s a performance every Saturday and Sunday, three a weekend,” she said. “That definitely eats up all of our time.” Alina’s dad, Sebastian, gets involved with Zachary Scott, too. As a filmmaker, he has filmed movies like Spy Kids and Grindhouse. “They [Zachary Scott] asked him to videotape because they know that he has a history in film,” she said. “A few other things we have done extracurricular in theater, he’s videotaped too.” Sebastian’s career in filmmaking has helped to inspire Alina, and may have even caused her interest with acting when she was a young

Knowing Although it doesn’t reach apocalyptic proportions, this film still provides a good movie expericence

O

by Hallie Cox

On Saturday nights action movie lovers make their way to theaters with groups of friends or family to see the latest film. In the 1950’s it was Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous movies, in 1979 it was Star Trek, in 1990 it was Edward scissor hands; through the years while effects have grown better, peoples tastes have not much varied in action. If you are one of the lovers of these action films with great story lines and unexpected endings, you might want to check out Knowing. In Knowing, an elementary school class opens up a time capsule made 50 years earlier. Caleb Myles (Chandler Canterbury) finds a list of “random” numbers written by an unsociable child from the time it was made. His father, professor Ted Myles (Nicholas Cage, best known among teenagers for his role in National Treasure), discovers the numbers correspond to precise dates

of events that had occurred in the past 50 years. And with his discovery, Ted Myles realizes that the remaining numbers predict future disasters. The movie evokes many different emotions and doesn’t follow the usual tendency of action films to be entirely set on the “saving the world” objective. While it isn’t by many viewers, found extremely captivating, or even compare to movies like the most recent batman movie, it is generally agreed that the movie’s special effects (especially in the case of the disasters which are almost life-like in their amazing realisticness) promotes a positive opinion. Many critics dislike the plot’s absurdity, favoring only a few select scenes, such as the disaster scenes and ending, if anything at all. Online raters on the website Rotten Tomatoes give it a general rating by critics of about 4/10 and by fans about

7.7/10. Although it is only considered an ok movie, anyone who enjoys movies like Jumanji, Armageddon, or others incorporating apocalyptic and disaster topics or scenes would likely also enjoy this movie. With great acting done by all parts, some __. Such as Canterbury who gave a serious acting job not normally supplied by such young actors; it further creates the illusion that the viewer themselves are experiencing the events first-hand, often strongly relating to the emotions felt by the characters. You share their fear, confusion, and pain, their reluctance and reminiscing. The movie incorporates many different, and sometimes subtle, themes. It involves the idea of a higher power, even with unusually strong perspectives on who or what God is and expressing a somewhat alternate Adam and Eve idea. Ted Myles doesn’t believe in God and even rejects his pastor father,. While in the beginning, God is only a minor topic discussed on occasion when relating to Ted Myles’ father, it becomes more related to the story line as the movie progresses. Those familiar with the movie Signs may recognize the idea that there is “no such thing as coincidence” in this movie. There are several mentions as to the question of whether everything occurs strictly by chance, or if every event occurs so that the next event may. Because of its multiple themes Knowing can be interpreted in many different ways, allowing for a wider range of viewers to enjoy it. Overall, while this movie doesn’t have games boards that bend reality like Jumanji, or mind twisting physiological parts like Alfred Hitchcock’s movies, it still contains some worthwhile scenes and is worth the money you pay. Check this movie out at your local theater or, if that is unavailable, wait for it to come out on DVD.

High School Musical Havoc

After providing viewers with High School Musical 1 and 2 as well as three seasons of Hannah Montana, on its regular channel, Disney Channel thought that it would be okay to charge viewers movie ticket prices to see High School Musical 3: Senior Year and Hannah Montana: The Movie in theaters. Newsflash, Disney Channel, it’s not. To be fair, many Disney Channel series, such as Even Stevens, have also been made into full-length movies. The only difference was that the charge that came with them was the cable payments, not theater tickets. High School Musical 1 and 2 aired on Disney Channel and in the viewers’ homes , no gas or movie ticket necessary. High School Musical 3: Senior Year was released October 18, 2008 to theaters all over the United States, but with a price. The target audience for HSM and Hannah Montana includes preteens and younger children, with some high school viewers here and there. These viewers do not have the money to pay to see these movies in theaters. They are completely reliant on their guardians to pay for the movie and provide transportation. In this way, kids and teens who cannot pay to see the movie in theaters are put at a disadvantage. For young viewers who really do enjoy these movies, this is extremely disappointing and unfair, especially since they have been able to get the first two High School Musical movies for free. Many parents would not pay for their kids to see High School Musical or Hannah Montana: The Movie in theaters.

Photo available in High School Musical 2 CD cover.

by Ashley L. Kerry Long, a mother of a fourteen-year-old girl and twelve year old boy, says that she would take her kids to the theaters but wouldn’t give them extra money to see the movies; that’s what allowance is for. Still, nothing is ever really free. The average cost of cable is around fifty dollars. However, when people pay for cable, they are already paying to support the channels they subscribe to. Most of these channels, such as Lifetime or Nickelodeon, don’t start making movies or shows that are available on the channel, and then make viewers pay to see the sequels in theaters. Viewers aren’t the only people paying money to the entertainment industry. Producing a movie is expensive, too. Everyone on set has a specific job- -whether it be acting, choreographing, or being on the makeup crew- and has to be paid. However, the High School Musical movies were not so expensive that Disney Channel was actually losing money; the corporation actually made $1 billion, with a production budget of $4 million on the first High School Musical alone. High School Musical 1 and 2, as well as three seasons of Hannah Montana, have aired on Disney Channel, available to all with a subscription to Disney Channel (usually through the cable companies), without the extra cost of a movie ticket. Many Disney Channel movies and series have been turned into movies, very few of which have ever required a viewer to pay to see the movie in theaters. Although High School Musical 3, within the first week in theaters, had made $42 million, the best opening ever for a musical, it put its youngest viewers at a great disadvantage.

Chalk Master: Julian Beever Who The chalk-master’s name is Julian Beever. He is based in Britan, where he grew up. He does not only chalk art, but murals and freelance projects for companies as well. Many of his non-chalk drawings have a musical theme or an inner meaning.

Where Even though Julian is based in Europe, he travels all around the world to do his art. Often, he will do his art in a place where his art has a special message or meaning. His “Make Poverty Hisory” drawing was drawn for the music event Live8 to support the poverty campaigns.

By Daniel G. What

Julian’s chalk art is called anamorphosis, which is drawing a 2d picture that looks 3d when viewed from a certain angle. These drawings look very real when viewed from the correct position.

Why Julians art has been used mainly for entertainment, but it also has a deeper political and social meaning. As I said before, his “Make Poverty History” drawing was made to spread the message of anti-poverty campaigns and to give the world the message of peace.

George Szepesi is an architect/artist who is filthy. He finds art in your old trashcans. In Szepesi’s studio the phrase, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, is put to good use. He works with junk so much some would say he is a garbage man. This kind of art maybe isn’t the art that some would want to display in their living room. Some don’t see garbage as art but this new type of art is quickly gaining popularity. “First let’s understand what garbage is. It’s not pizza bags or an old cup from a fast food restaurant; it’s the process of transformation,” he said. He picked up a knife, a bottle, and points to a refrigerator and says this all turns into garbage. “It’s a process that nature does. Everything is going to be garbage one day. Everything in museums is garbage but I use selective garbage,” said Szepesi. Szepesi has been an artist/architect for more than 35 years. He attended The Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT; this is where he got his inspirations for his garbage-art. At the time when this new type of art wasn’t so popular and it was new, he created his own style. “At the time when I was a student at MIT, all I could do was take pictures of garbage covered in snow, but I liked how pristine and clean the garbage was when it was covered in snow,” said George. The art was so different yet graceful to him. Even after he left MIT he decided to stay with the new type of art and expand on it. He made a new company called Egabrag, which is garbage spelled backwards. He got the name from when he was a student at MIT. When he is designing a building he tries to use as much recycled materials as possible to keep with his ideology of garbage. “I started to understand the transformation of matter. I can’t say

how I choose my art, I am just observant of everything that is around me,” explained Szepesi. Szepesi not only make sculptures or installations with garbage but also uses photography with garbage. He tries to come up with new ideas for art with garbage because he likes to keep things new and interesting. “Sometimes I take pictures of telephone poles. There are staples on the poles that are left behind after a notice of a lost cat or a garage sale is put up. The paper is gone, the information is gone, but the staple is still there. To me that is garbage”, said Szepesi. The day that I interviewed Szepesi he slammed his finger on the car door and it broke his finger in two places. He went to the hospital and got x-rays of his finger. He asked them to put it on a CD and I asked him if he is going to make art with those pictures. “Of course!” exclaimed Szepesi. Szepesi is a pioneer in this new type of garbage art. As this new type of art gains popularity, other artists will begin to see its creative and artistic value. But Szepesi says his art is different than most others. “Other people use what they call as found objects which they call trash. Artists in all times have used some sort of garbage in their art because artists see the beauty beyond.”

Operation Overrated: High Fashion By: Erin DeConcini

By realizing line and took look at prices and this, I came to see if maybe I was wrong about - Plus Sized Model Size: 8 one conclusion: - Average American Woman Size: 14 high fashion. What I found the high fashion in that online catalogue was world is overrated. a little shocking! A bikini was Other than extremely rich people and those who risk $405, a shawl was $1,505 and a floral hat was $310, throwing themselves into massive debt by buying high these were some of the cheapest garments on the fashion clothing, nobody can afford it, not to mention online store. The thing that was most shocking from you have to be a size two or four to even fit into the this experience was not the pricing of the clothing, but clothing. The fashion world just isn’t built for average that I could get a highly similar bikini at Target for $20 people. and one of those floral hats for $10.

Model By Numbers:

People might have started to realize how out-ofcontrol high fashion prices are; in the recent economic crisis, less and less people have been buying clothing from high-end stores like Chanel. New York Times reported that Chanel has already cut back 200 jobs, and that other big-name companies are likely to have to do the same. Perhaps the fashion world needs to think a little more about current-day economy when pricing their clothing if they want business to stay at a steady rate. When doing more in-depth research on high fashion, I stumbled across a Chinese designer named Yumi Katsura. Katsura designed a black and white, lacey corset top that flows into a downy comforter skirt, cut up to just below the crotch. This is an example of an outfit that is definitely unrealistic. For example, imagine wearing Yumi Katusra’s original to work one day. My guess is that that dress wouldn’t be suitable for a working environment. I can also make an educated guess and say that just about nobody would wear such an outfit around their house as casual clothing. Sure, someone can wear it out to a lavish party, but that’s one of the only places one can wear it.

Whitney Thompson, size 10, was the first woman to win America’s Next Top Model as a plus-sized model.

Taking the cost of the clothing and the nature of the actual garment into account are just two things to consider about high fashion. The models are just as unrealistic as the clothing they tend to model. They are stick thin with extreme make up done by professionals, and yet most little girls want to be one. A model’s weight and what is considered “plus-size” has always been controversial, but it’s become even more shocking lately. Recently, the fashion world declared that a woman who wears size 8 clothing is now plus-sized. Is this what should be taught to little girls? That if they aren’t stick thin then they can’t be beautiful and live the good life of a model? I think not. Young girls should be taught to love themselves just the way they are, not brainwashed to believe that a size 2 is the only way to go. The world is obsessed with an overrated high fashion world and this is a problem. NEWS FLASH FASHION WORLD: Make cheaper clothing items, that way just about anyone can afford it, create more attractive pieces, and realize that the models don’t have to be stick thin. But for now; high fashion is a raging fire that needs to be put out.

Drinks Down

U

By Johan G

Underage drinking in a big problem in high school and college students because of the deaths related to underage drinkers. Every year underage drinkers are forced to drink in secret at friends house’s or some other place that they had to drive too, making them have to drive while drunk when they go home. But if the drinking age was lowered then those underage drinkers could drink in a supervised environment making them less of a danger on the roads and to themselves. The legal age for drinking should be lowered from 21 to 18. This means that teens will be able to buy alcohol too. But I think anyone 18 to 21 should only be able buy alcohol in bars or restaurants so there is someone watching them purchase the alcohol. When they turn 21 they can start buying alcohol in stores. Every year 5,000 young people die under the age of 21 die from underage drinking, mostly either from drunken driving or homicide. This is because these people were unsupervised when they were drinking so they couldn’t stop themselves from drinking too much. If the drinking age

is lowered then the underage drinkers can drink is bars or when an adult is supervising the party so they will be safer. This will reduce the number of deaths a year related to underage drinking. If the drinking age is lowered and parents accept that their son or daughter drinks then they will be able to trust each other more. When you turn 18 you are considered an adult. I mean you can do everything that an older person can do except buy alcohol. You can vote, drive, smoke, and even go into the army. Why would you let someone join the army but not give them the right to drink? If someone thinks that they are not mature enough to drink at 18 then why do you think they are mature enough to vote for the next president or be in the army. Also when someone turns 18 they have to be more responsible because at that time most students are going to college and have a job so why not let them drink. Some say that 18 year olds make so many mistakes when they drink but that’s only because they have just started to drink. A 21 year old is going to make the same mistakes if they start to drink. Lowering the drinking age also won’t affect the younger kids as much. Some might say that this will tempt younger kids to try alcohol or make it easy for them to get it but right now teens are already able to get alcohol. Right now 71% of eight graders say it’s easy for them to get alcohol. So it’s going to be the same, even if the drinking age is lowered. Today alcohol is always going to be a problem so having the drinking age at 21 is a bad idea and should be lowered to 18. This will show to teens how important alcohol is and how mature they need to be when they are under the influence.
