Music has the power to connect with our hearts, our minds, and our souls. It is the voice we use to tell our stories. This season we will draw inspiration from American culture and connect more deeply with the human spirit. In a season full of celebration, each concert will be a unique experience as we present beloved classical masterpieces, some revisited from our previous 19 seasons and others for the first time. Four exciting pops programs will set the tempo for all to enjoy. As we embark on our 20th season, your involvement will help ensure our success while we strive to build the future of the Las Vegas Philharmonic. I invite you to participate in our mission to enrich and educate and to help us write the score for our next decade, starting today. I am looking forward to sharing with you the excitement of the 2018-2019 season and hope you will join me to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this mutual musical journey.

Jeri Crawford, President & CEO

Welcome to the 20th Season of the Las Vegas Philharmonic! It is my honor to present a wonderful variety of classical masterpieces and engaging pops concerts for this exciting milestone. In a nod to our two decades as your symphony orchestra, we will present encore performances of beloved works from previous seasons and welcome back Dick McGee to guest conduct our holiday concerts. We celebrate the 100th Birthday of Leonard Bernstein with an opening night program featuring two of his greatest works. We’ll have fun with concert experiences for you pops-lovers including the film Psycho with live orchestra and the music of John Williams, which audiences went wild for in our 2016 -17 season. I can’t wait to share these experiences with you!

Donato Cabrera, Music Director

“Few of us have the opportunity to participate in creating something beautiful that will move our spirits and enrich our lives. Tonight we invite you to join us in giving birth to a new musical tradition in our community.” Those were my opening remarks as President of The Las Vegas Philharmonic on the occasion of our first formal classical concert, Mahler’s Symphony #2, aptly entitled “The Resurrection.” When Maestro Hal Weller and I began formulating plans for the orchestra back in 1998, we were warned that building a new orchestra would be a risky business. Previous attempts had failed. We were advised that Las Vegas just wasn’t that sort of city. But the old Las Vegas was rapidly changing. Splendid new hotels were being built. Celebrity chefs were opening exotic restaurants and world class boutiques were moving into the city. What better way to articulate this new Las Vegas than with a resident classical symphony orchestra. Our initial patrons, subscribers and volunteers took a huge risk in supporting a cause whose success was thought to be questionable. But together they and the orchestra’s continuing supporters and audiences have proven the naysayers wrong. Today all credit goes to the very many who, throughout all these twenty years, have guided the orchestra, have played for it, listened to it, financially supported it, and invested their time, resources and energy in it to make that early promise an ongoing reality. We asked you back then to accompany us on this journey of exploration, where the only language spoken was fluent mankind. And you did. May the valley continue to resound with the universal voice of music for the next twenty years. Please keep on humming our tune.

Susan Pillsbury (formerly Tompkins), Founding Member & Former President of the Las Vegas Philharmonic

OPENING NIGHT

CELEBRATING BERNSTEIN DONATO CABRERA, conductor JOYCE YANG, piano BERNSTEIN RACHMANINOFF TCHAIKOVSKY BERNSTEIN

Overture to Candide *2007 Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Opus 18 *2001, 2012 Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy *2009, 2011 Symphonic Dances from West Side Story *2012

Timeless stories of forbidden love, an American Icon and Russian Romantics kick off our 20th season. We celebrate the 100th Birthday of the renowned composer, conductor, educator, humanitarian and American treasure, Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein’s West Side Story and Candide are both based upon classic literature. West Side Story is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet while Candide is inspired by Voltaire’s novel of the same name. Joyce Yang returns for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the composer’s most enduringly popular pieces, demonstrating once again, her “poetic and sensitive pianism” (Washington Post). Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy is the product of Shakespeare’s tragedy and Tchaikovsky’s tortured personal life colliding to produce what has been heralded as the first true expression of the composer’s genius.

PSYCHO Film by ALFRED HITCHCOCK Score by BERNARD HERRMANN DONATO CABRERA, conductor Experience the critically acclaimed psychological horror film and its spine-tingling score with your symphony orchestra. Bernard Herrmann was an American composer best known for his collaborations with director Alfred Hitchcock, most famously Psycho, North by Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Vertigo. Hermann received an Academy Award for The Devil and Daniel Webster in 1941; later renamed All That Money Can Buy. Terror and tension are heightened when a large screen presentation of the film meets live music, demonstrating the ability of the score to tie it all together and deliver goose-bumps.

GLASS, MOZART & BACH DONATO CABRERA, conductor SIMONE DINNERSTEIN, piano MOZART GLASS BACH MOZART

Overture to Cosi fan tutte, K588 Piano Concerto No. 3 Concerto for Keyboard No. 7 in G Minor, BMV 1058 Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K550 *2008

Mozart’s opera Cosí fan tutte premiered in 1790 in Vienna, Austria. A comedic opera (opera buffa) whose title roughly translates to “they’re all like that,” deals with the themes of love and fidelity and in the 19th and 20th centuries was considered by some to be risqué. Philip Glass’s newest piano concerto was commissioned by a consortium of orchestras, including the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and composed for phenomenal pianist, Simone Dinnerstein. Concerto for Keyboard No. 7 is speculated to be Bach’s first attempt at a full harpsichord concerto. Symphony No. 40, written in 1788, is sometimes referred to as the “Great G Minor Symphony,” and is one of only two minor key symphonies Mozart wrote.

AN EVENING OF BRAHMS DONATO CABRERA, conductor DE ANN LETOURNEAU, violin ANDREW SMITH, cello BRAHMS BRAHMS BRAHMS

Academic Festival Overture, Opus 80 Concerto for Violin and Cello in A Minor, Opus 102 *2010 by De Ann Letourneau, Andrew Smith Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Opus 98 *2004, 2011

The mastery of Johannes Brahms is celebrated with three of his greatest works written during the height of his fame. A prolific and innovative composer, he composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano and organ, as well as voice and chorus. Academic Festival Overture is half of Brahms’s musical “thank you” to the University of Breslau, in response to being awarded an honorary doctorate. Our own Concertmaster and Principal Cellist feature in the composer’s double concerto for violin and cello, his final composition for orchestra. Symphony No. 4 is Brahms’s final symphony.

TIME FOR THREE DONATO CABRERA, conductor RANAAN MEYER, double bass NICK KENDALL, violin CHARLES YANG, violin Time for Three is a group that defies any traditional genre classification, happily and infectiously. With an uncommon mix of virtuosity and showmanship, the American trio performs music from Bach to Brahms and beyond as well as playing originals and their own arrangements of everything from bluegrass and folk tunes to ingenious mash-ups of hits by the Beatles, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and more. This performance will include the orchestra in addition to the members of Time For Three. Please note the later start time for this concert.

Scherzo Capriccioso, Opus 66 The Hiawatha Melodrama (after Dvořák) Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Opus 95 “From the New World” *2004, 2011

The second year of “Music Unwound,” funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, explores Czech composer Antonín Dvořák and his time spent in New York in the late 1800s while directing the National Conservatory of Music of America. Dvořák absorbed the music of African Americans and Native Americans, and the spirit of their music pervades his Symphony No. 9, the “New World Symphony”. This performance will be the culmination of a week-long series of events in conjunction with UNLV. For more information, please visit www.musicunwoundvegas.com. Kevin Deas has gained international renown as one of America’s leading bass-baritones. He is perhaps most acclaimed for his signature portrayal of the title role in Porgy and Bess, having performed it with many illustrious orchestras in North America.

Our American German Cultural Exchange Fellowship is made possible by the generosity of German Philanthropist Mrs. Dorothee HenningsHoltmann and honors cultural unity while showcasing American and German soloists exchanged between the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Cottbus State Theater Orchestra. Violinist Thomas Reif is highly sought after for his versatility and has performed with orchestras throughout Europe. Beethoven’s 9th was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony (thus making it a choral symphony). The Las Vegas Master Singers, our Chorus-In-Residence, join acclaimed vocalists Felicia Moore (soprano), Kelley O’Connor (Grammy ® Awardwinning mezzo-soprano), Sean Panikkar (tenor) and Raymond Aceto (bass) on Beethoven’s final symphony.
