NEWS AND NOTES
20-GAME LEAGUE SCHEDULE
Advertisement
With the departure of Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion to the Sun Belt, Conference USA went from a 14-team league to an 11team league.
As a result, the Bulldogs will take part in a 20game conference schedule for the first time in program history (had been an 18-game league schedule since 2014-15).
HOMETOWN KID
North Louisiana has seen its fair share of great basketball players. However, it is been rare to have a Bulldog from Louisiana Tech’s hometown of Ruston.
And for the first time since 2008, a Bulldog calls Ruston home in Jordan Crawford. The guard was a four-time state champion at nearbly Simsboro High School.
north carolina duo
The majority of Bulldogs have always hailed from the home state of Louisiana and the neighboring state of Texas. Of course, Florida has been a popular state to pick players from as well over the last decade or so.
This season though, the Bulldogs have the addition of Dravon Mangum and Quandre Bullock, both of whom are from North Carolina.
Prior to this season, there had been only two Bulldogs to have ever called North Carolina home. That has doubled this season.
conference series history
With the Bulldogs success in C-USA, its no surprise that they lead in every conference series history since joining the league.
LA Tech leads UAB, 9-7 LA Tech leads Charlotte, 9-2 LA Tech leads Florida Atlantic, 8-3 LA Tech leads FIU, 6-4 LA Tech leads Middle Tennessee, 6-3 LA Tech leads North Texas, 10-9 LA Tech leads Rice, 14-2 LA Tech leads UTEP, 10-6 LA Tech leads UTSA, 12-4 LA Tech leads WKU, 7-5
dominant in c-usa
LA Tech currently has the most overall wins and the most conference wins since joining Conference USA in 2013-14 (records do not include this season).
The Bulldogs victory over USM on Jan. 13, 2022 turned out to be their 100th C-USA victory. It took them only 145 games to get there, the second fastest of any team in league history.

THE THE OPPONENTOPPONENT About the blazers
Preseason favorite UAB got off to a hot start in 2022-23, winning 12 of its first 14 games including victories over South Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina during the non-conference. But the Blazers come into Ruston having lost three straight, all in conference to Florida Atlantic, FIU and WKU. The three losses were by a combined seven points.
Most recently, UAB suffered an 80-78 loss to WKU this past Wednesday in Birmingham which was the Blazers first home loss of the season. It snapped their 11-game home winning streak.
UAB averages 86.1 points per game, the second most of any team in the country. The Blazers have eclipsed 80 points in 13 of their 17 games this season. They can score it at all three levels, but are exceptional at getting points from the free throw line (rank sixth in the country in free throws made per game with 18.2) as well as scoring in transition (rank 23rd in the country with an average of 15.4 fastbreak points per game).
Defensively, UAB ranks fourth in the nation with 41.2 rebounds per game and are one of the top teams at forcing turnovers with an average of 15.9 takeaways per contest.
Reigning C-USA Player of the Year Jordan Walker is the leader for the Blazers. The guard, who was recently named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 watch list, is the nation’s third best scorer currently at 23.8 points per game. He has posted 12 20-point scoring performances this season and also ranks third in the country in most made three-pointers with 70.
LSU transfer Eric Gaines is the other part of UAB’s dynamic backcourt. He is averaging 11.7 points per game while also leading the Blazers in total assists and steals.
UAB received nine of the 11 first-place votes in the C-USA preseason poll. The Blazers won 27 games a year ago, a season where they also won the C-USA Tournament title and reached the NCAA Tournament, in Andy Kennedy’s second year as head coach.

LA Tech had gotten the better of UAB in recent years, winning five straight in the series. However, the Blazers swept all three meetings last season, including an 82-73 win in the C-USA Tournament Championship. It marked the first time since 2012 that the Bulldogs went 0-3 against an opponent in the same season.
The Bulldogs do own a 6-1 mark versus the Blazers at home, but it was UAB who came out on top in the last meeting in Ruston. UAB jumped out to a 15-2 advantage and held the lead almost the whole game. Amorie Archibald and Kenneth Lofton, Jr. combined for 51 points, but the ‘Dogs had a tough time stopping the Blazers who shot 50.0 from three and made 21 of 24 free throws. Jordan Walker finished with a game-high 36 points.
