About the blazers
After coming away with an 81-74 win over Louisiana Tech in Ruston less than two weeks ago, UAB dropped its next two games to Middle Tennessee and North Texas.
The Blazers lost in overtime, 74-73, to the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro, Tennessee followed by a 63-52 home loss to the Mean Green where they scored the fewest points in a game during the Andy Kennedy era. UAB has now lost five of its last six games and sits in a fourway tie for fifth in the league standings along with Charlotte, UTEP, and LA Tech.
UAB has been without the reigning C-USA Player of the Year Jordan Walker for the last three games due to a foot injury. Walker ranked second in the country in scoring at 23.8 points per game, having produced four 30-point scoring performances this season.
Despite their recent struggles, the Blazers still own the top scoring offense in Conference USA at 83.4 points per game. They also rank No. 1 in the league and top five in the country in free throw attempts per game (25.0), free throws made per game (18.5), offensive rebounds per game (14.4), and total rebounds per game (41.5).
Eric Gaines has stepped up offensively in the absence of Jordan Walker. The LSU transfer and preseason All-Conference USA selection is averaging 17.3 points per game over the last three contests, anchoring UAB in scoring in two of those games.
A big piece to UAB’s rebounding efforts is Trey Jemison who has registered four double-doubles in the last five games. He is averaging a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game.
UAB received nine of the 11 first-place votes in the C-USA preseason poll. The Blazers won 27 games a year ago, a season where they also won the C-USA Tournament title against LA Tech and reached the NCAA Tournament in Andy Kennedy’s second year as head coach.
