THE OPPONENT
About the RED RAIDERS
Texas Tech was picked fifth in the Big 12 preseason poll behind Baylor, Kansas, Texas and TCU. The Red Raiders finished third last season in the conference standings after going 12-6. They ultimately won 27 games, advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament while finishing at No. 12 in the AP Top 25 poll.
The Red Raiders have won 23 straight games at home, the second longest active streak in the country behind only Gonzaga. Two of those have come this season, dominating Northwestern State, 73-49, and Texas Southern, 78-54.
Texas Tech ranked first in the country last season in defensive efficiency rating and have allowed their first two opponents to score an average of 51.5 points while shooting just 32 percent from the field.
The Red Raiders return only three players, including Kevin Obanor, who was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection. He is averaging a team-high 11.0 points per game. They brought in five transfers including D’Maurian Williams (Gardner-Webb), Fardaws Aimaq (Utah Valley), Jaylon Tyson (Texas), De’Vion Harmon (Oregon), and Kerwin Walton (UNC).
Monday will mark the 10th meeting between Louisiana Tech and Texas Tech. The two squads first faced off twice during the 1939-40 season.
LA Tech trails in the series, 7-2. The first win by the ‘Dogs came in 1982 in Ruston, leading the whole game in route to a 66-60 victory (Karl Malone had a team-high 18 points). The other was a 68-53 win in Lubbock, led by Paul Millsap who had 29 points and 14 rebounds.
