My professional achievements for 2005 / 2006 (so far!) include the HUGE honor of being named Hispanic Business Woman of the Year – 2006, by the Puerto Rican Cultural Parade Organization! I am being honored at this year’s Puerto Rican Cultural Parade which will be held in Ybor City on April 30th, 2006; where over 60,000 people are expected. I was also recently awarded the “Chairwoman’s Award of Excellence – 2005 Champion Media Supporter of Tampa Bay Hispanic Issues by The Tampa Bay Hispanic Chamber of Commerce!

Many years have gone by since I published my first magazine. My journey started in a small apartment in the area of Town and Country (Tampa, FL) in April of 1999. My publication was called C.L.U.B. Magazine (City of Latin Urban Beats) and it was the first bilingual magazine that was introduced to Tampa Bay and Central Florida. My first magazine was only 8 pages, and measured 6" x 7.5" in diameter and mainly offered cultural and entertainment news, with some articles in English and others in Spanish. Those were the days! I have to smile I am being honored at the 2006 Puerto looking back because it has been such a long hard road that I have traveled, Rican Cultural Parade but worth every step that I took — to in Ybor City, I hope get HERE. you can join us on

That is the short and sweet version of the creation and realization of my dream. I have sacrificed a lot to get here and I have learned many valuable lessons, the most important ones being to allow yourself to lean on your team, and not attempting to do everything Sunday, April 30th! I learned many valuable lessons yourself, —not leaning on others leads throughout the years and, ultimately, to setting yourself up for failure, I did that for many C.L.U.B. Hola Mi Gente Bonita de Tampa Bay and welcome to another issue of Latin Times Magazine. This is an exciting issue as we have many accomplishments to celebrate!

In 2004, after 5 years of constant struggle and discouraged, I took a break from the magazine taking a “9 to 5” job, determined to be happy with this typical existence. No luck — I continued to dream, and the desire I felt to create continued to pursue me. My break lasted less than a year, and in 2005 I again began to publish, this time calling my publication “Latin Times Magazine” and bringing together all the exciting features that were a part of C.L.U.B. Magazine and Latin Village Magazine. Today, Latin Times Magazine can be found at over 450 locations, including WalMart, 7-Eleven, Hollywood Video, Bally Total Fitness plus many other convenient locations! In addition, Latin Times Magazine is now also an e-magazine, and has formed strategic alliances with other prominent companies such as TampaBayLatino.com in order to offer my clients more exposure for their advertising bucks. Our networking opportunities continue to grow as we celebrate the birth of Latin ConneXions – a networking social that has been taking place on the 1st Friday of each month – and on Friday, April, 7th Latin ConneXions celebrates our first year anniversary with "El Mercado" a room of exhibitors bringing you cultural treasures! PLUS a LIVE 12 piece band; recording artists Clara Salsa! (Please don't miss this special event!)

Latina Leadership:

By: Jolie R. Gonzalez

How Heritage Shapes Our Values in Career and Life By Celia Rentería Szelwach Aunque yo nacíe en los Estados Unidos, estoy muy orgullosa de me patrimonio Mexicano. My father was born in Durango, Mexico. Like me, my mom was born in Los Angeles, California. I was lucky my Mexican grandparents were actively involved in my early years. Although my parents raised us with English as our first language to minimize the likelihood of discrimination, my grandparents taught me some Spanish and encouraged me to watch novelas. We honored many Mexican traditions while assimilating into the U.S. culture. My family instilled values that would guide me as a leader in my military and corporate careers. Service and Love: My abuelita who spoke very little English taught me about the importance of serving others. She used to wash our kitchen floors by hand and would work from day to night to keep our home clean and happy. As her namesake, I admired her spirit, her humility, and her tremendous love for her family. I took her spirit of service and tough love with me when I led soldiers in the Army. For me patriotism is about service to one’s country, one’s community, and one’s fellow man. It’s about subordinating selfinterest and personal agendas to what’s best for all. Love means compassion and respect for others who may differ from us, a willingness to see from another’s view. When customers know you care and respect their needs and interests, they will buy your services. When co-workers know you value and support them, they’ll follow your lead. Balance: I developed “out of balance” habits early in life. When my grandfather was dying of cancer in our home, I would see him each morning before I went to school. He would weakly hold up his index finger in the #1 sign encouraging me to be the best in school and life. As a high achiever, I’ve learned that it’s easy to drive yourself into the ground trying to climb the ladder and achieve other people’s definitions of success. Why not determine what success means for you and develop a plan to get there? It’s tough to have a

balanced perspective when you’re tired, irritable, and not thinking clearly. When I experienced burnout six years ago, I discovered the importance of ensuring balance emotionally, spiritually, physically, and mentally. Good leaders manage themselves effectively and ensure their organizations are healthy. Integrity and Courage: Whether you’re an executive, manager, or frontline contributor, your character is ultimately what defines you. Can your customers, coworkers, and family members rely on you to be truthful and act consistently with your beliefs and values? Do you have a personal code of ethics and are you willing to stand by it when times get tough? Are you competing for the “quick buck” or committed to growing your company over the long-term? The courage to let people know what you will stand for and won’t stand for can make or break your career and your business. Consider leadership decisions at Enron, WorldCom, Arthur Andersen, and Tyco. Trust and integrity impact the bottom and top lines in business. The toughest decisions I’ve made required me to stand up for what I believe in. Once you lose your credibility, you’ve lost your ability to influence others. We called it “choosing the harder right over the easier wrong” at West Point. Learning: I first discovered the value of learning when I was bused to the valley from an inner city school in Los Angeles. Until then, my teachers didn’t really take an interest in me. When I was exposed to new students, new teachers, and different perspectives, a new world opened up. People who saw my potential helped me discover a passion for learning. A willingness to admit mistakes and acknowledge imperfection has served me well. Be openminded not arrogant. I’ve made good and bad decisions in career and life, but I’ve always asked myself what can I learn from this situation in order to become better from it? 12% MONTHLY INCOME Earn $100/mo. on $10,000.00 purchase! Like money in the bank? This opportunity is better than and interest rates I’ve ever received! Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting the driving force behind American Cash Machines. Mr. Gilbert "Bradley" Swarts, whose mother immigrated from Ecuador in the early 1960’s, has dedicated his life to creating wealth for his clients. His company, ACM specializes in developing investing opportunities for serious minded investors. The newest product surpasses all the others in my opinion! My mother –Carmen Santiago, and my aunt Bernadina Santiago have both been clients since I first introduced them to Mr. Swarts more than 3 years ago! Today they are both enjoying 30% Plus RTA. I think this is a big deal, and wanted share this with you. The new product is called a “SMART TERMINAL” and it provides many needed services to the Latino community all over the United States. Not only does the Smart Terminal act as a cashless ATM, it also provides everything from check cashing services, bill payment, pre-paid debit cards, money transfers, cell phone minutes, photo development and much, much more! The owner of this machine in turn receives a percentage of every transaction that this machine generates! Where are these SMART TERMINAL located? You may have seen them recently in convenience stores, gas stations and in areas that are mainly “unbanked”. The term unbanked referring to people who do not have bank accounts. Yes, believe it or not, there are many people around that do not have bank accounts, and 52% of those people are minorities. By providing a valuable and necessary service to our community, Mr. Swarts has developed a business opportunity that is financially beneficial to his investors and and also allows them to a perform a great service to the community! Born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Rita started college in New Jersey but could only last 2 years in the cold weather, transferring to New Orleans where she graduated with a BA in Fine arts. Rita then went to Atlanta to study at the Art Institute where she finished her MBA in Interior Design. Returning to New Orleans, Rita began her career in Computer Graphics/Drafting and Desktop Publishing. In 1986 Rita felt the call of the beach and moved to Tampa working at a simulation company. Rita started her real estate career in 1998 at New Homes America and in 1999 started with Century 21 Elite Locations. Eight years later, Rita says “I’ve discovered that caring for clients is the most important aspect of my job” speaking about the real estate business.

Continued from pg 13 - Arlene Segovia. named Ad Infinitum Advertising Services. As a managing partner, Arlene handled the account service and media placement for Charles Schwab in Latin America and developed media strategies and plans for larger agencies pitching new business in the Hispanic market. During the same time period, Arlene was recruited by the CEO of Latina Magazine to help grow the circulation and the sales revenue from the state of Florida. Two and half years later, Latina’s Florida circulation grew approximately 11% and sales revenues shot up by 150%. A graduate of the University of South Florida, Ms. Segovia has more than 10 years of experience including work in the general, U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets and has established herself as one of the brightest minds in a highly competitive market. su llegada preguntaba “ ¿dónde están los puertorriqueños?”

It is a well known fact that the tragic shooting death of Tejano singer Selena triggered a reaction within the Latino community that can only be compared to the reactions of the deaths of Elvis Presley or John Lennon. Selena’s music crossed cultural boundaries to touch the lives of young and old alike, Selena was also considered a role model for life off-stage, she was family oriented, active in anti-drug campaigns and involved in AIDS awareness programs.

Welcome to Recuerdo Road..... By: Jolie Gonzalez

Recuerdo Road was created for our heroes, icons and “roadpavers”. It is important that we remember these individuals and that we teach our youth about the courage, intelligence and strength of our people, by honoring them in remembrance as we reflect on the trials and tribulations that we as a “people” have overcome and focusing on the triumphs and lives of truly great Latinos!

Latin Times Magazine: In your opinion, did the movie accurately capture the life of SELENA? Suzette: A lot of people ask us that and I would have to say yes, although it’s very difficult to put 23 years of your life into 2 hours and 10 minutes of time. Latin Times Magazine: In your opinion, what makes SELENA a Hero not only to Latinos but also to the world? Suzette: I am honored at the fact that you see her as a HERO, Thank you! I feel the world can connect with her, and my family because we are simple people who like everyone else had a dream and passionately pursued it. Latin Times Magazine: After her death, how has the family coped with her loss? Suzette: It has been a long difficult journey without her. Our heart aches for her; there is a constant emptiness we feel. But through our belief in Jehovah God we draw our strength. Just like everyone else who has lost a loved one knows that time does heal, not that you ever forget, but you learn how to live life again somehow. In closing, I asked Suzette one last question. Latin Times Magazine: If you could speak to SELENA one last time, what would you say to her? Suzette: If I could speak to her again, I would tell her that I miss her so much and I would probably just hold her and never let her go.

Black Palm Restaurant By: Vernoica Diaz !Que Rico! Is the first thing I have to say about Black Palm. The moment I walked in I felt like I was on vacation on a tropical island. The soft wind and the aroma of the delectable Latin cuisine fills the air. Their main entrance is into the outdoor dining patio with a huge palm tree all lite up with a small stage for their live Latin performer. As you proceed to walk in further you will reach the indoor dining room with a beautiful bar area, decorated with very colorful 3-D art work that you are able to view with the 3-D glasses that they will provide.

You can say that Black Palm is a Latin fusion restaurant, a combination of Columbian, Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican and other Latin American countries. The man behind the magical restaurant is Lui, he’s the owner and chef. Lui is a native Columbian that recently relocated to Florida from Texas. He immediately fell in love with the Pass-a-Grille location, while on his honeymoon and had a vision for an incredible restaurant. He studied Culinary arts in France for two years and he has more than twenty years experience within the restaurant industry. Black Palm is located in Pass-a-Grille on historic 8th Avenue. Come and meet Lui and his crew. Enjoy a night of great food, service and not to mention the live entertainment on the weekends. Don’t forget to mention to Lui that you heard about Black Palm from Latin Times Magazine and his two best clients, Max and Veronica!

The Black Palm is a romantic, sophisticated yet comfortable atmosphere infused with delicious cuisine. Enjoy a mouth watering Ceviche, an intoxicating Paella or an Arroz con Pollo so smooth and light that I can guarantee that you will not leave a single grain of rice behind.

Rican community, and once again, the Hispanic community will give testimony to the fact that we are a market to be reckoned with, when it comes to the almighty dollar.

Central Florida’s Puerto Rican Community welcomes el boricua, CARLOS ARROYO, to the Orlando Magic!

SPORTS ROOM

What testimony, you ask? The testimonials will be televised for all to see. I predict that attendance records for the Orlando Magic home-games will soar with the proud Puerto Rican community showing their support in masses at the home games. This is just what Orlando needed, already being deemed by some as “Little Puerto” for the large ingestion of Puerto Ricans relocating to this part of Central Florida. The Magic are getting a point guard already known for his solid playmaking ability, in Arroyo, who is from Fajardo, Puerto Rico. He now becomes the fifth point guard on a 15-man roster, but the Magic’s first point guard with that old-fashioned mentality of orchestrating an offense by passing first and scoring second.

By: Már/Ló

“His greatest asset is, he will run your basketball team as a true point guard,’’ said Magic Coach Brian Hill. “He’s not a scoring guard. He’s not a shooting guard. He’s a point guard to run a basketball team.’’

Carlos Arroyo has parted with the Detroit Pistons and joins the Orlando Magic basketball team. This is a little bit of history-in-the-making for the Puerto

“We’re getting a point guard now who can do things that some of our others don’t do,’’ said Magic Assistant General Manager Otis Smith.

Arroyo, 6 feet 2 and 202 pounds, also is a betterthan-average defender. He led Puerto Rico to a surprising sixth-place finish at the 2004 Summer Olympics and to a third-place finish at the 2003 Olympic qualifying tournament. It beat the USA at the 2002 Pan American Games. Arroyo, who became the sixth player from Puerto Rico to play in the NBA, is extremely popular in his homeland. The Magic would love for him to be successful here because he could become a big draw at the ticket window with Central Florida’s burgeoning Puerto Rican population and, according to a Magic spokesman, the team unexpectedly sold 150 single-game tickets just on the morning of Thursday, February 16; Arroyo was drafted by the Magic the previous evening, Wednesday, February 15! Yes, it’s time we add a little adobo, sazon y sofrito to the Magic...If only we could get Daddy Yankee to sing the National Anthem at one of the home games....and have El Gran Combo perform during half time!

I felt like I was back in the 1980’s all over again when Bon Jovi performed for a sold-out crowd of over 18,000 at the St. Pete Times Forum Friday night. Most of the fans were not teenagers, but people in their 30’s and 40’s with their own kids in there arms. Lighters held up high flickering on and off. In the mid 1980’s Bon Jovi was seen in tight leather pants, colorful scarves, ripped shirts, big hair and eyeliner and that was the norm. Their live performances is what made them famous on MTV with hits like “Runaway”, “You give love a bad name” and “Wanted dead or alive”. Last year they came out with “Have a nice day” the name of this tour and their #9 album. The music has gone thru some subtle changes in the past two decades but it still follows the formula that made the band a success in the first place: crunching hard-rock. Oh yeah the best part, Jon Bon Jovi!! He was a hottie back in the eighties, but he is even hotter now. I waited over 20 years to see him, at 3 feet away from the stage, it was all definetly worth the wait.

Passion, energy, and emotion! By: Shea Williams Music can evoke all of these into your heart if applied correctly and Steven Tyler lays it on thick. Aerosmith live at the St. Pete Times Forum on the night of January 17th proved to be “Amazing”. From the first song “Helter Skelter”, to watching Steven sip his bottle of Coca-Cola side stage, I was hypnotized. This band delivers everything that you could want in a musical experience, instrumental magicians and a voice coming from the lips of one of the sexiest men on earth. Each song was delivered as if it were on fire, wild and consuming. It is as if for that moment, when Aerosmith takes the stage, they become one man, no, one Deity of rock having gelled all of their individual talents. Like a muse at midnight, Steven Tyler prowled the stage in his uniform of gypsy chic couture, and signature draping scarf on the microphone stand. His hair hung wildly about his face, as if it too, was so moved by his performance that it wanted to dance about feverishly on his head. Among the songs performed, I took special fondness to “cryin’”, which, I have to admit was exactly what I was doing as Steven sang. It was moving how Aerosmith gave me, pitch by pitch exactly what I sing to on the radio. Now that is a good live performance. Well I think that a question was answered that night at the Forum a question that has been asked more and more lately....Is rock and Roll really dead? The answer.... “Dream On”.
