Minorities on the RUN!

History in the making, the 2008 election will have three Minority Democratic Presidential Hopefuls!

Meet New Mexico, Governor Bill Richardson

Albuquerque Democratic Governor Bill Richardson has said he’s proud to be the first democratic Hispanic candidate to run for president. (The first Hispanic Candidate to make a bid for the Presidency was California financial consultant Benjamin Fernandez who ran in the Republican presidential primary in 1980.) Gov. Bill Richardson said he is taking the first step toward an expected White House run in 2008, offering extensive experience in Washington and the world stage as he seeks to become the first Hispanic president.

....................................

Meet U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton From New York

New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton hopes to become the first woman U.S. President! In what many conservatives regard as a nightmare scenario -- President Hillary Rodham Clinton -- is increasingly seen by veteran Republican politicians and strategists as virtual inevitability. “She’s at the highest point that she’s been right now at 35 percent,” said Andy Smith of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, which conducted the poll. “There’s a lot of interest in her recently.” Hillary Rodham Clinton would appeal to women, Hispanics and African-American voters alike.

....................................

Meet U.S. Senator Barack Obama from Illinois

Illinois Senator Barack Obama hopes to become the first AfricanAmerican U.S. President! He is hailed by his supporters as the hope of an increasingly multicultural nation, a political phenomenon who can wow white voters while carrying the aspirations of African-Americans all the way to the White House. The black author and essayist Debra J. Dickerson recently declared that “Obama isn’t black” in an American racial context. Some polls suggest that Mr. Obama trails one of his rivals for the Democratic nomination, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, in the battle for African-American support.

editor’sletter ¡Hola my fellow Tampeños... ...y welcome to another edition of Latin Times Magazine!

2007 promises to be our most exciting year of growth so far! 2006 went by in a blaze of glory and lights as Latin Times Magazine experienced a huge year of growth. In recapping an incredible year, we watched a lot of changes in our community; Locally, we saw the creation and revival of many great community organizations such as HYPE, (The Hispanic Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs) a wonderful organization which caters mainly to the needs of today’s young Hispanic business professional; and The Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce of the Gulf Coast, both of which I had the pleasure of sitting on the board of directors for in 2006. Nationally, we saw a true union of Hispanos throughout the United States and in huge immigration marches, and the world hailed the arrival of yet another Latina Ms. Universe! Fidel Castro passed the reigns of power over to his brother Raul Castro, Hispanic Governor Bill Richardson announced his bid for the US Presidency and US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton announced her candidacy for the 2008 presidential election. (I know she is not Latina, pero, she is a woman!!!) As a proud Tampeña, I am thrilled that I have had the extreme pleasure of serving the Tampa Bay community by providing you with local news and information in 2006! What did this year bring us? Latin Times Magazine had a very exciting year as we spread our wings and created a new market in Metro Orlando; establishing a presence with our publication and producing the successful Latin ConneXions events there. Latin Times Magazine was also awarded the 2006 Media Supporter Award from the Tampa Bay Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. I was awarded the 2006 Hispanic Business Woman of The Year by the Puerto Rico Cultural Parade Committee; and most recently, I was nominated and announced as a finalist for the 2007 Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Minority Businessperson of the Year Award. (it was a very busy year!) The winner of the Minority Businessperson of the Year Award will be announced on Thursday, February 15th, 2007 @ the Quorom Hotel located at 700 N Westshore Blvd. in Tampa. I hope that you will come out and show your support for all the finalists that evening. To obtain information on how you can attend this exciting evening, please visit Tampabay.bizjournals.com. (I am hoping to see you all there!) ¿Y Que Más? My year brought me many joys, success, growth and even a huge HEADACHE(S)! Despite the challenges I faced, I pushed ahead because I believe that if you want something bad enough and you have faith in yourself, you can make anything happen. Que Dios los Bendiga..... Spanish Heritage Project “The Love of Spain”

By MARY BRADBURN, President of the “AMERICAN IDEALS FOUNDATION INC”

recorded his efforts in the Congressional Record.

C

omposer/Pianist Robert Moffa, founder of the “AMERICAN IDEALS FOUNDATION INC.,” has created a project that will benefit the Tampa Bay area. The project’s name is the “SPANISH HERITAGE PROJECT,” and the theme is “THE LOVE OF SPAIN.” This foundation is 23 years old, based in Florida and has contributed a great deal to the arts. The goal of the foundation is to recognize all the arts (visual, performing, literary and dance) and promote the artists.

The Spanish Heritage project was a dream of Moffa’s for over 12 years. He first presented the idea to Ybor City resident, musician, and performer, the late Alberto Carbonnal. Alberto loved the idea and met with Moffa several times in Ybor City. After Alberto’s death, Moffa stopped work on the project. When I became president of the foundation in 2004, I was able to revive Moffa’s love and interest in this noble endeavor, “THE LOVE OF SPAIN”. The project will have about a two year journey with monthly promotional activities. The finale will be a two and a half hour performance in Tampa with his own “AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA”. This concert will have dance, classic Spanish music, and the Romantic/Contemporary Spanish music composed by Moffa. October 2008 is the target date for this aggressive project’s finale, of the arts and businesses, recognizing our Spanish Heritage.

y name is Margo Sultenfuss, when I was in the sixth grade, my ninth grade sister and I organized The Gift of Food project to benefit a local food bank called RCS. We had heard about the problems the RCS Food Bank was having in the wake of the 9/11 attack in New York when the director spoke at our church. The food bank feeds 4,000 people monthly, mostly single working mothers and their children, and funds were drying up. We decided to do something and created a charity organized and run by students to raise money for the food bank to buy food in bulk. We thought that our initial goal was ambitious for 11 and 14 year old sisters: $500. But the community surprised us with its generosity, and we raised over $14,500. Excited by the success, we began to recruit friends from local schools to help us. The next year we raised $22,500, and the year after that over $31,000. To date we have raised over $120,000 for the food bank, all the money used exclusively for food, and have 13 core student volunteers. The Gift of Food soon became the food bank’s largest cash contributor, and I was appointed to the board of directors when I was 12. It was interesting to see firsthand what serious business running a charity really is. In 2005, we started an endowment for the Food Bank, planning to raise $200,000.00. The endowment is funded through an annual concert called Summerfest as well as grants and contributions. In its first year the plan generated almost $30,000. This year’s Summerfest Concert will be an International Music and Food festival. This year’s entertainment line-up will feature exciting cultural performances and includes a LIVE performance by the legendary Grammy winner Tito Nieves as well as several other great performers. Join us and enjoy an array of delicious cultural dishes, dance lessons and performances, and an international line-up of performers which includes Mariachi’s, Cumbia Bands, Merengue, Reggae, Salsa and much, much more. This year’s event will also offer an exciting foreign film festival and art exhibits! Event Schedule: Saturday, April 21, 2007. 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM. The event will take place at the Largo Cultural Center and is free to the public. For information on how your company can be a part of this event, please contact: (727) 586-6267.

“Comienza la batalla por el voto

Felicidad La Búsqueda de la

By Celia Rentería Szelwach

I

n this issue of Latin Times, I’d like to share some insights from an incredible movie I saw recently, entitled “The Pursuit of Happyness”, starring Will Smith and his own son. While I won’t give away too many details, I will tell you that the movie (and book) are based on the real life story of Chris Gardner—a salesman, homeless person, and stockbroker. Although I haven’t read Gardner’s book, the movie shared the challenging experiences some of us face in striving to create our own success. To put Gardner’s actions in perspective, I’d encourage you to have a BLAST in pursuing your own definition of happiness:

Be determined and persistent. Regardless of his painful childhood, education, or income level, Gardner took the initiative to change the course of his life. He recognized that to achieve satisfaction and happiness in his life, he’d have to go for it. When he suffered setbacks, he never accepted defeat. .......................................................................................................................

Lift your spirits with family and friends.

According to a poll cited in Time Magazine’s January 2005 article, “The New Science of Happiness”, connections with children, family, God/faith/religion, and one’s spouse were the top four things in life that brought the greatest happiness. While Gardner’s relationships with his spouse and friends weren’t particularly strong, he drew strength from his son and church. .......................................................................................................................

Adapt to change. Faced with adversity and challenge, Gardner’s humor, flexibility,

interpersonal skills, and smarts enabled him to overcome competitors, unfair circumstances, and even a bizarre interview. The key is personal resiliency or the ability to “bounce back”. To build your resiliency, complete an inventory like the Change Style Indicator (CSI)** to discover how you handle change.

hispano en el 2008”

H

ispanic PRWire.

.......................................................................................................................

Set realistic expectations and priorities. It’s clear from the movie version of Gardner’s life that he acknowledged what was really important to him and created a career and life around what truly motivated him—his role as a dad. Identify what really inspires you, set your priorities, and keep them. .......................................................................................................................

Take calculated risks. While Gardner made some bad decisions, he accepted

responsibility for his choices and resolved to learn from his mistakes. He believed in himself and his ability to create a better life and took the risks he deemed necessary to reach his dreams. Maya Angelou says: It is the belief in a power larger than myself and other than myself which allows me to venture into the unknown and even the unknowable. That says it all, wouldn’t you agree?

My biggest lesson learned is that you have to take steps backwards in order to unlearn old beliefs and behaviors that hold you back in order to move forward. It’s a humbling (and sometimes humiliating) prospect, but the journey is worthwhile for those who are willing to have a BLAST doing it!

LATINTIMES

atinas represent the fastest growing entrepreneurial sector in the U.S. business community

Hispanic Business Women’s Alliance (HBWA) has launched a new, interactive Online Directory of Latina Business Owners and Professionals at http://www.latinamarketplace.com. This online directory will help Internet shoppers easily find and do business with Latina Business Owners and Professionals in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, registered in the Directory. “According to the latest U.S. Bureau of the Census report (2002), there are 540,909 Latina owned businesses in the United States and another 111,287 Latina businesses jointly owned with a male partner. All are excellent prospects to be registered in this new Directory,” stated Lourdes AponteRosario, President of HBWA and Publisher of the Online Directory. It is not generally known that Latinas represent the fastest growing entrepreneurial sector in the U. S. business community. According to the Center for Women’s Research, Latina entrepreneurs are starting businesses at a rate that is fully six times that of the national average. Yet it has not been easy for consumers or other businesses to identify and contact them by City or State. The Online Directory of Latina Business Owners and Professionals will help facilitate the process as more and more companies are registered as a result of HBWA’s collaborative efforts with local Hispanic Chambers of Commerce and Latina organizations.

Jackie Saldaña

Meet Jackie Saldaña aka Jacka Jackie is the visionary behind JACKA DESIGNS, a fashion forward company where fashion comes first. The vision behind her dreams is simple, that Jacka Designs be remembered by everyone long after the day or evening has ended. Jackie was once told “the details of the design” are what makes a garment stand out, the fabric and the colors are part of the design detail, which is appreciated mostly by designer and client. So, when she begins a design she keeps that thought in mind and adds her own unique and edgy, yet sophisticated Latina Flair.

Owner of Fusion Medispa in for the last three years. Mariana has a passion for her field, and keeps current by attending annual Medispa congresses, reading industry magazines & attending educational events Mariana also dedicates her time to putting together brainstorming sessions and picking the brains of other successful business owners. Mariana’s priority is spoiling her clients and her philosophy is simple; your business belongs to your customer not to you. Once you look at your business through the eyes and needs of your customers, they will be happier (and they have been!). Mariana measures her

success by the positive feedback she receives from happy clients and their referrals. How does Mariana recharge her batteries? 1 day each month, Mariana shuts off her phone, puts away her to-do lists and just focuses on spending time with family and friends! When asked who she would have dinner with and who she most wanted to meet. She responded “Margaret Thatcher.” Because she is a world leader, that balanced the diplomacy between the US, and the rest of the world while never losing focus on the needs of her own country.

Jackie’s passion for fashion comes from the women in her family. Being a 3rd generation seamstress she has taken her families’pastime a step further. Her teachers were her mother, grandmother and aunt all who worked in garment factories for many years during Jackie’s youth and made “one of kind outfits” for friends and neighbors for their special occasions to earn extra money. These strong women showed Jackie how to use a sewing machine and taught her “the details of the design is what make the garment standout” they have been and still are her daily inspiration.

the “flair” dancing deserved. It was during those days that Jackie decided to get out her sewing machine and make an outfit for that evening. Much to her surprise, Jackie was approached by several salseros with interest on her newly created outfits.

Jackie was born and raised in one of the biggest fashion capitals of the world, New York, relocating with her family to Tampa, Florida in 1993. Being Puerto Rican descent; and a Salsera at heart, Jackie was never really able to find anything to wear when going out that had

In creating Jacka Designs, Jackie has worked hard many days and many nights. She is pursuing her dream with love, dedication and a passion you can see in every intricate detail of her designs.

Jackie’s business has grown throughout the years, she started creating outfits only for herself, and today, Jackie is designing outfits for both men and women: Her line includes dancewear, business suits, men’s wear and to ball gowns.

The Devil Rays start playing March 2, against the New York Yankees at Progress Energy Park in St. Petersburg. The Rays’ will introduce to the fans a reason to cheer in 2007 with a new and exciting new look. The newest addition of young talent is five time Japanese All Star Akinori Iwamura, a third baseman free agent import from Japan with plenty of promise. Congratulations to the Indianapolis Colts in winning the 2007 Super Bowl against the Chicago Bears 29 – 17. This is the first Super Bowl title for the organization, the city and the fans of Indianapolis since the team moved from Baltimore before the start of the 1984 season. The victory did not come easy for the Colts in the first ever Super Bowl played predominately in the rain. The rain affected

both teams making the ball hard to handle causing back to back fumbles in the first half of play. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Coaches Tony Dungy (Colts head coach) and Lovie Smith (Bears head coach) made NFL history in becoming the first African American men to coach and lead their two Championship Teams to Super Bowl XLI. Both men considered a class act throughout the league and in their communities, broke racial barriers inspiring young Americans of all ethnic and racial backgrounds to go after their own dreams. la Casa de sus sueños

A

Caliente

Telemundo’s Conga Caliente Festival which was held at Al Lopez Park in Tampa, FL, was a HUGE success!

The

Chicana A middle aged Chicana had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table, she had a near death experience and the Creator appeared before her. Seeing the Creator, she asked, “Dios mio, is my time up?” Dios said, “No, mijita, you have another 43 years, two months and eight days to live.”

.............................................................................................................

Los

Romeros

What an incredible concert by Los Romeros to a full house @ El Centro Asturiano in Tampa, FL!

The Chicana decided to stay in the hospital and have the works done; face-lift, liposuction, chi-chi lift, nalga lift and pansa tuck. She was all excited because she knew she had a long life ahead and wanted to look bien chingona! After her final operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way to a taqueria, she was hit and killed by a bus. Arriving in front of the Creator, she demanded, “Orale pues...que paso? I thought you said I had another 40 years to go? Why didn’t you pull me out of the path of that pinche bus?” The Creator replied, “Orale chica, I didn’t recognize you!”

he Gift of Food project is a charity organized and run by students to raise money for the RCS Food Bank to buy food in bulk. Last year the RCS Food Bank in north Pinellas County helped an average of 4,000 people per month. Two-thirds of the food was distributed to children. Since 2001 we have raised over $140,000 for the food bank, all the money used exclusively for food. The Gift of Food has become the food bank’s largest cash contributor with your help. In the past, The Gift of Food has raised the money with

the design, printing, and selling of holiday cards. In 2005, we started an endowment for the Food Bank, planning to raise $200,000.00. The endowment is funded through an annual concert called Summerfest, as well as grants and contributions. To date we have raised almost $30,000.00. The ultimate goal is to get the event established, finish funding the endowment, and then have the proceeds from the event become an annual revenue source for the entire RCS organization year after year.
