When last I wrote, it was the New Year and I was anxiously waiting to attend the 2007 Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Minority Business Person of the Year Awards Ceremony. You see, my good friend and colleague, Ms. Celia Renteria Szelwach – who also happens to be an incredible writer – had nominated me for this coveted title… I was very honored – to say the least… Who wouldn’t be? When her nomination made me a finalist, I felt I would burst… Then on Thursday, February 15th, 2007 … Burst I did!! I sat at my table surrounded by a few close friends as we excitedly listened to the vibrant and energetic tones of Mr. Arthur Porter, former publisher of the Tampa Bay Business Journal, as he read the list of nominees… In a suddenly silenced room – stilled by that famous pause for dramatic effect…I heard the words…“And the winner of the 2007 Minority Business Person of the year award in Business Services is --- Jolie Gonzalez of Latin Times Magazine!” For several moments, I swear… I thought I was having the most fantastical dream! “Am I dreaming?”… I thought to myself. Sure, I wanted to win, but I also recognized I had just competed with some very qualified and deserving individuals, AND WON!!!! I won…! WOOHOO!!! And it felt great! I still remember my friends at the table repeating to me - “Get up… You won!” “I knew you were going to win!” “You won!”… As I sat glued to my seat in a glorious hazy cloud of pride and elation, and then in one single moment, I became unglued from my seat and floated on that infamous cloud nine towards the stage. As Arthur Porter handed my award to me, I laughed as he jokingly whispered “I never thought I would be giving this award to another publisher!” to which I quickly responded “That’s why I thought I wouldn’t win!” I walked to the podium and looked down at my award and in that one moment, before I even spoke a word, I could remember my first issue & my first cover… My first client & my first event! My first fall and how I managed to get back up… The hard times & the great times! All of it –and I felt so happy, I was doing what I loved most in life, and I was being honored for it and I was happy! To my family, friends, clients and readers, thank you for always being there. –I am living proof! If you set your mind and heart toward pursuing a dream – there’s absolutely nothing you cannot accomplish. I urge you to challenge yourself everyday. Strive for more – everyday! Reach for your dreams everyday… And everyday - your dreams will reach you!

Ms. Mary Weizmann, Associate Academic Dean of the school, and Mr. Zaruba Academic Dean presented the honorary degree to Semprit for serving as a Mentor for Children, her leadership roles in Banking and at the Tampa Bay Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Semprit indicated that this award also belongs to all those who have sacrificed many things to give to others, as well as, the Hispanic Chamber and that she was very honored by this dedication. During the commencement speech entitled “You are a Gleaming Star”; Semprit provided a very eloquent and emotional position as to how important it is for young Hispanics to be committed to staying in school and going to college. She indicates there is a responsibility that people like herself have to encourage others to continue their studies. She shared with the
audience how a Puerto Rican girl raised in the South Bronx, New York can make it through as a single mother, working a full time job and college and become a successful professional, leader, and a role model. It was not easy! She says, “When the atrocities of 911 occurred it was very trying for everyone but she with her classmates made a promise to give back when they graduated to ensure America continues to strive and they each have kept their promise.

Hispanic Credit Card is on the way!
A new credit card developed by Gratiscard, Inc. and funded AOL co-founder Stephen Case is ready to carve a niche in the credit card industry. The GratisCard is offering merchants a lower processing fees than that of Visa and MasterCard. To entice merchants to accept the GratisCard, the company plans to charge just 0.5% of the cost of a purchase. Visa and Mastercard debit cards charge fees at a rate of 1.75%. GratisCard will use the Internet to lower transaction fees paid by retailers and, Case hopes, increase access to credit and debit cards for lower-income shoppers as well as consumers with bad credit. Sources say that besides, the GratisCard offering cheaper transaction costs, it will also offer consumers and retailers another hot feature: better security, GratisCard is anonymous, and cards contain only a 16-digit verification number, transactions are encrypted. The GratisCard corporate offices are located in downtown St. Petersburg, FL., they have had success in Philadelphia, where the GratisCard has become the official card of the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Jason freyre One hundred- seventy-five company employees, 80 trucks and trailers, and 300 owner operators, just to throw out a few numbers is where this business only begins to thrive. Words such as “fair” and “honest” are voiced when talking about this flourishing business known as the one and only Jason’s Hauling Inc. Always being known as “the little guy” in this business, Jason Freyre, Owner of Jason’s Hauling, a Tampa, Florida based construction trucking fleet, has taken his business to soaring heights and helped the other “little guys” to do the same. With a dream for aviation is his future, Freyre took off on his first solo fight, piloting himself to Venice, Florida and back to St. Petersburg. After a miscalculation of a landing location he decided his dream was simply that and went back to school to pursue a degree in business. Working for his father while finishing up school from 1987 until 1990, Freyre learned the ins and outs of the trucking business and began to build up yet another dream. A few business classes at Hillsborough Community College and components of hauling construction materials, and Freyre was on his way to owning and operating his own business. Branching out from his father this small but proud owner of his first truck, started his own company, Jason’s Hauling Inc., right out of his own home.
By: Danielle Freyre A one man venture who did the bid estimating, executed all administrative operations, drove the truck as well as maintenances leaving him with revenue of $66,000 by 1992. Being not exactly the dream he had hoped for, Freyre impelled himself a little more, moved from home to small office in the Drew Park area of Tampa, purchased a second truck, employed a driver and still carried out all administrative duties. By 1993 Jason’s Hauling had reached $1 million in gross sales and hired vital clerical aid. From 1993 to 1998 Jason’s Hauling grew from $1 million to $7 million and investing in his business was his number one maneuver. Being certified by the FDOT to haul asphalt and operating on a 24- hour basis in West Central Florida, Freyre planned to expand state-wide. Now here he is seven years later and a company expanding faster than he could have ever imagined. Awarded the Hispanic Entrepreneur Businessman of the Year Award in 2004 by the Hispanic Tampa Chamber of Commerce, he is well known for the assistance he’s provided over the years to Hispanic newcomers. Hauling construction raw materials, road asphalt and demolition waste, this company employs over 80% of minorities, in-house and subcontractors. Developing more than ever, Jason’s Hauling Inc. is now in four locations in the West Central Florida region and continues to inflate. Four office locations are available to give you the “fair and honest” business you deserve.

Rosario Dawson
Horoscope Highway By: La Chic A’Divina
Note: Written in Spanglish
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Rosario Dawson was born on May 9,
1979. New York-born and bred actress Rosario Dawson made her screen debut in Larry Clark’s controversial “Kids” (1995). Rosario was literally picked off the street to play Ruby. Dawson -who is of Puerto Rican, Cuban, Black, Irish, and Native American heritage -- had never acted before being cast in the film. Following “Kids,” she next appeared in Spike Lee’s, “He Got Game” (1998) and that same year starred in “Side Streets,” a series of vignettes about life in New York’s five boroughs. Faithful to her New York roots through and through, Dawson has continued to star in films set in her hometown, including “Light It Up” (1999), a drama that cast the actress as an honors student caught up in a hostage situation, and “Down to You” (2000), a romantic comedy in which she played a freewheeling stoner. After jamming with “Josie and the Pussycats” (2001) and landing on the “Sidewalks of New York” as a teacher dealing with a failed marriage. In 2002, Dawson had the distinction of appearing in two different science-fiction comedies that met dissimilar fates at the box office. She stepped into the female lead in “Men in Black 2” after Linda Fiorentino decided to opt out of the successful sequel, but Dawson also appeared alongside Eddie Murphy in the infamous bomb “The Adventures of Pluto Nash.” She continued to move between big budget films like “The Rundown” with more independently minded efforts like “Shattered Glass.” In 2004 Dawson took on the part of the feisty woman who marries “Alexander.” She showcased her versatility in 2005 by appearing in two very different films. She took on the part of HIV positive drug addict Mimi Marquez in the big-screen adaptation of “Rent,” and played a hardened prostitute in Robert Rodriguez’ “Sin City.”

Aries, a great summer awaits you! In your career, you feel driven to express yourself now y there isn’t much that will prevent you from reaching your goal. In romance, though you are attracted to the idea of romantic amor, you could be overly aggressive without even realizing it. Check out the other person’s feelings before you reveal too much, or you just might find yourself in an embarrassing position.
Scorpio (October 24 - November 21) Your feelings can get you into trouble as you entertain a variety of possibilities. You are feeling more flexible than usual right now, and may offer someone more choices than he or she wants. Others may be hesitant to make a commitment for fear of your response. The best thing that you can do is to assure them that you are willing to go along for the ride at this time.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Taurus, your familia loyalties may come to the forefront of your life - motivating you to make a difficult choice. Circumstances might require you to become an anchor for others at this time. Your direct actions should be based on deep convictions.
Gemini (May 21 – June 21) You are ready for some hot summer fun, but an inner voice reminds you that too much fun is not what you need at this time. Most likely, you won’t listen to this voice of reason, pero you should probably consider changing your plans and playing later when your work is done.
Cancer (June 22 - July 22) Cancer your summer is going to be a mixed time for Career and financial gains. Keep a watch on your expenses and respect elders and things will move fine. You may have a setback /separation with your amor. You will feel a bit sluggish.
Leo (July 23 - August 22) Leo, you will be full of energy this summer and will take on tasks involving serious physical efforts. In order to spare your health, be sure to avoid overestimating your strength. An older relative may invite you over for a chat, avoid arguments!
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) You are soon due to become better off. Your finances may not improve automatically, you may have to put in some serious effort, pero at least you will have the opportunity to make that effort. A door will open and with a chance will arise. Within reason now you can find whatever you seek - be it love or money. Choose wisely.
Libra (September 23 - October 23) Libra, we can’t all know exactly where we are going - or when - or even why. Life has to keep us guessing or we would end up in a very dull world. Pero uncertainty is a double-edged sword, verdad? Too much awakens anxiety, just as surely as too little is a little boring. Be brave this summer, don’t let a challenge scare you away, it might certainly be worth the effort.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) Sagittarius you have strong inner resolve that you can rely on now -- no matter what is happening in your outer life, inside you stay strong. Life is changing quickly, and you might not yet fully understand how these changes will affect you. Don’t try to stop the process. Room is being made for new opportunities that will soon enter your vida!
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) You have the endurance to hold your own in many situations, even in the stormy seas of change, and things are certainly changing for you. You can feel it in the air and on the ground and it does seem benevolent. Be ready to bailar with the unknown, for if you try to ignore the music, it will just have to play louder and louder until you cannot shut it out.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)
Calmate, Aquarius, your emotional anxiety may come to the surface, because you are having trouble deciding what is the most sensible of action in your love life. Although romance can be exciting now, it’s also unsettling -- and you just might not be ready to sacrifice your peace of mind for a bit of pleasure. Recuerda, the current situation is in flux and the stress won’t last long.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Just a few weeks ago, you were twiddling your thumbs. Now you are using them to grip tightly to the handlebar of life’s speedboat! At work, you are breaking records for speed and efficiency. You are making things happen! You have a lot on your plate but you can absorb and digest every last bit of it as long as you break it up into bite-size pieces.

2007 Season Stats
Baseball
The Baseball season has started and thus far one man is left standing at the top. Not Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants and his chase of Hammering Hank Aaron’s home run record who should attain the record possibly in June, and not Tom Glavin of the New York Mets and his chase for 300 career wins. The man at the top is none other than Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees who has been the hottest player with a bat this season. A-Rod as he is commonly known was born in New York City to Dominican parents on July 27, 1975. Now at 31, the 6’3”, 225lbs 3rd baseman of the Bronx Bombers has been doing just that –staying on top!

US Men’s National Soccer Team played Ecuador on Sunday, March 25, 2007 @ Raymond James Stadium. Final Score was US 3- Ecuador 1.
14 Home Runs, in only 19 games played and 78 at bats. After 13 years in the Major Leagues the native New Yorker is off to the best start of his career. The April start is great, but he will have to continue his constancy all season if the Yankees expect to win the World Series. The Yankees are an offensive force, but are currently suffering from lack of good solid pitching. The Yanks who recently lost a two game series to our very own Tampa Bay Devil Rays and where A-Rod hit two homers, have found themselves at the cellar of the American League East. The highlights for the Yankees so far has been with Mr. April - Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod who is currently batting with a .385 Batting Average and an on base percentage of .444, is projected to have a 60+ Home Runs before the season ends.

El Gran Combo Interview Roberto Germain goes one-on-one with the legendary El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico!
With a “full house” in attendance, the Tampa Bay Hispanic Chamber of Commerce put on a great power networking luncheon in April. Un Gran Dia en Tampa. El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico conocidos como La Universidad de la Salsa performed in front of thousands of fan’s at Bush Gardens Fiesta Latina last April. The Greatest Salsa ever entertained everyone playing some of their biggest hits. Ms. Lourdes Torres and I had the pleasure of interviewing Rafael Ithier (Band Leader-Director) and Charlie Aponte (1 of 3 Lead Singers) just prior the shows start.
LT: The Gran Combo has been performing now for over 45 years, regarding retirement what are the future plans for the band? GC: We plan to continue playing until the year 2010 provided we are all still around and able to perform. We have not given retirement a great deal of thought. LT: Many of today’s top Salsa singers have
recorded songs with some of Reggaeton’s top rappers creating what is known as Salsaton, do you have any plans to record this new sound? GC: We are too old (laughter) to be playing that type of music, but we would not shut out the possibility of doing such a project. The music is very popular, it’s something we would have to consider if there were something good for us to do. Latin Times would like to thank Bush Garden and The Gran Combo de Puerto Rico - Ambassadors to Latin music all over the world for allowing us to have this exclusive interview. We wish all the members many years of continued success.
Julio Aviles, Metro Orlando reporter for Latin Times Magazine went ONE-On-One with Tito Nieves! Did you know that Tito Nieves is a smooth jazz fan? He is! There are just some of the questions that Latin Times Magazine reporters asked Tito during their exclusive interview. The interviewers: Julio Aviles & Pedro Arroyo of Orlando, FL. Who doesn’t know Tito Nieves? The man needs no introduction, El “Pavarotti” de la Salsa, his career spans more than 30 years and yet as our reporters sat with this living legend of Salsa, they were happy to discover that Tito is a very humble and happy family man. Despite the loss of his son, which has made filled him with sadness and depression, Tito continues be the warm, inviting person that he has always been. “I am very much at peace right now, and I dislike surprises, especially when I am home in Orlando” he confided, going on

When Tito was asked about what was to come, Tito shared with us that he was working on a cd production, entitled “haciendole homenaje” con Marco Antonio Solis and Olga Tañon. Tito has also teamed with Sergio George on his next production. They are also working on an “homenaje para Hector Lavoe.” Although on the day of the festival, Tito was a little under the weather-he did not let his thousands of fans down, going on to perform “Fabricando fantasias”.... We would also like Tito and his beautiful wife Irma for taking the time to speak with us. We would also like to thank Sea World and Jessica Zuniga for inviting us to Viva La Musica!
