BizBlock Becoming Culturally Competent By Celia Rentería Szelwach
Authors like Thomas Friedman claim the world is becoming flatter, more interdependent, and increasingly more competitive due to technology and ease of movement across international borders. According to DiversityInc magazine, by 2050, persons of diverse origins will comprise 50% of the population. It sounds like our world is rapidly becoming a vibrant blend of cultures, beliefs, values, and people doesn’t it? But what are the implications for our working lives? Among marketing professionals, it’s common to hear about cultural misunderstandings that result in lost revenues, negative brand image, and decreased market share. International relations are often strained through mishandling of crosscultural negotiations. Now, cultural mishaps are becoming not only brand-threatening, but lifethreatening as well. Healthcare professionals are researching and evaluating healthcare disparities among multicultural patients and discovering that quality of service delivery often depends upon understanding the cultural beliefs and perspectives of patients and their families. Although it seems like a straightforward concept,

culture has many facets which can unite or divide us. Like an iceberg, culture has certain features we can see, but many components reside below the waterline. It’s the factors below the waterline that often result in misunderstandings, conflict, and missed opportunities. The process of developing cultural competence requires patience and a willingness to honestly assess personal and organizational commitment to culturally competent outcomes. Change begins with the individual, relies on team commitment, and ultimately requires support from the organizational culture in order to achieve a sustainable impact. How can you leverage the effects of globalization and changing demographics by improving your level of cultural competence, or your knowledge, skills, and abilities to work effectively with and influence multicultural consumers, coworkers, and stakeholders? Try these: 1. Complete a self-assessment like the Discovering Diversity Profile® to determine your current skill levels in cultural competence. Create an action plan to build your strengths and improve weaker areas. Mariela Dabbah first came to the U.S. in 1988 as a tourist from Argentina. After receiving her green card, and starting several companies, she began to write books aimed at helping other Latino immigrants in the assimilation process and achieving success in America. Dabbah recently shared pointers from her book Cómo Conseguir Trabajo en los Estados Unidos,Guia para Latinos at an event sponsored by Barnes & Noble and The Tampa Bay Chapter of NSHMBA ( National Society of Hispanic MBA’s). Dabbah explained that networking is crucial to successful career and professional advancement. Mariela’s Top 5 Rules of Networking:
2. Develop a network of multicultural professionals who can introduce you to their culture. www. TampaBayin.com is a great place to start connecting with career experts and resources. 3. Attend cultural competence workshops or lectures offered by your employer or community. 4. Learn and practice a new language or read books about cross-cultural topics and people. 5. Join chambers of commerce and associations that reach diverse markets. 6. Ask a multicultural executive or coworker to show you the ropes and be an informal mentor. 7. Make presentations to coworkers about your culture for heritage month celebrations. 8. Volunteer and participate in ethnic events to learn more about multicultural communities. Be open to new experiences and surround yourself with people who think differently and can share the beauty of their cultures with you! Call or email (preferably call) the people you have promised something to. Do whatever it takes to keep yourself on the radar. 4) Leave your ‘comfort zone’: The bigger you network, the more opportunities you have to grow. Socialize in places where you don’t usually hang out. 5) Be prepared: Know how you will introduce yourself, what you have to offer, and your short and long-term goals for every event you attend. Que Viva La Raza En La Florida y en el Mundo! In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin Times Magazine would like to dedicate this feature to the many Hispanics/Latinos living in the United States. Hispanic Heritage month began on Friday, September 15th and runs thru Sunday, October 15th, 2006. This month serves as a celebration of our culture. May our language, our foods, and our customs continue to prosper as one, and let us remember always that it is through this unity that we have achieved our strength. The word “Hispanic,” once used as a reference to people originating from Spain, has today taken on new meaning, because in modern-day America, the overwhelming majority of the U.S. Hispanic population actually comes from Latin America.
sailed from the island of Puerto Rico to the east coast of the United States to land on what is today called Florida. De Leon claimed the peninsula, which he thought was an island, for Spain, thus becoming one of the first explorers to stake a Spanish claim in North America. The Spaniards first established a permanent settlement in Florida in 1565. In that year, the Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded St. Augustine in Florida. This was the first permanent European settlement

in what would become the United States, even before Jamestown,--the first permanent British settlement in North America-by more than 40 years. The roots of the Hispanic experience in America lie in St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in the United States. St. Augustine served as Spain’s military headquarters in North America during the 1500’s. Florida remained under Spanish rule until 1763, at which time Spain was forced to give the territory to Britain. Spain later regained Florida in 1783, only to sell it to the U.S. government in 1821. As Florida came under the control of the United States, thousands of Americans poured into the territory. Soon the Spanish presence in Florida was overwhelmed by the stream of English-speaking settlers, fast forward to 2006. Today, Florida is home to over 3,000,000 Hispanics with the purchasing power of over $82.2 billion. In fact, the State of Florida has the third-largest Hispanic market in the U.S. after California and Texas. And that, my fellow Latino(a)s, is a review of Hispanic Heritage and our great State of Florida!
Quinceañera
You’re a little girl no longer... but you’re not a woman yet. You will soon turn 15, a magical and wonderful age in which dreams intertwine with reality. It’s a special time for parents to see their daughter bloom as a spring bud and for the young woman to go out into the world, happy and enthusiastic about starting a new stage full of expectations and dreams. For all those reasons, when this moment arrives, it’s time to celebrate! Although it’s true that times have changed, and with them, some customs, the 15th birthday continues to be unlike any other custom. Some still follow their mothers’ traditions and make their society debut, with beautiful and very glamorous gowns; others prefer to go out dancing with a group of close friends. There are not any definitive rules. The only thing you must do is enjoy the moment to the max. Organizing a party seems like a very difficult task, but there is no need for that. Telemundo and Alteration & Creations Boutique will soon launch an area Quinceañera promotion. Do not miss Telemundo’s new show Quinceañera every Saturday at 7pm. What young Latina female has not dreamed about shining like a princess on her fifteenth birthday? Alteration & Creations Boutique and Bridal and Telemundo are launching a promotion that will award prizes to Tampa Bay quinceañeras. Prizes include dresses and the rental of classic black tuxedos on the day of the quinceañera party. Alteration & Creations Boutique and Bridal and Telemundo Tampa are partnering for this special contest where three local girls will win the opportunity to make their quinceañera the fairytale of which they have always dreamed! To participate in the contest, write to Telemundo Tampa, letting them know why your daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece or someone special to you should be selected to win the grand prize. Send your entries by mail to Sandra Sandoval, Telemundo Tampa, 402 N Reo Street, Tampa, Fl. 33609 or e-mail them to ssandoval@zgsgroup.com.

Although Pollyanna Dorough is a grown woman, her faith and unconquerable spirit have given her the ability to see the best in life, as she beautifully demonstrates in her debut album “Wings of Hope.” Already two of her songs, “Fly to Heaven” and “We Will Meet Again,” have been awarded “Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year” for 2004 and 2005 from the “UCMVA Unity Awards.” And her song “Fly to Heaven” was also picked and now appears on the compilation album “A Tribute to Pope John Paul II” which is now available in your local Christian Book Stores. Pollyanna grew up in the middle of five children from Orlando, Florida. She
graduated as a voice major from Westchester’s Conservatory of Music at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York. During that time, she continued to encourage the musical abilities of her younger brother Howard Dorough a/k/a Howie D. of the Backstreet Boys. Pollyanna discovered her song writing ability after losing her sister Caroline to a disease called Lupus in 1998. It was then when she wrote her first song “Fly to Heaven,” which is now the theme song for the Dorough Lupus Foundation. This non-profit organization was established by her family to promote lupus awareness, education and funds for research centers to help find a cure for Lupus. Pollyanna saw an opportunity as a musician to spread the word about lupus through

her music, and she began writing and recording additional songs to create her debut album “Wings of Hope.” A portion of the proceeds from the album sales are benefiting the Dorough Lupus Foundation and its mission to help others. With time-off from the Backstreet Boys, Howie jumped in to encourage his sister in the studio, writing and recording as the Executive Producer of the album. “I’ve been blessed to feel Pollyanna’s uplifting spirit my entire life,” Howie says. “I want others to hear and fall in love with her and her music the way I have.” To learn more about Pollyanna, hear her music or order your own autographed copy of her album “Wings of Hope,” visit: www.Pollyanna.net. “Beisbol:” America’s Game
The game once known only to residents in North America has grown significantly since its early beginnings in the 1800’s. For decades, the game of baseball has been recognized as the “National Pastime” for the United States, providing entertainment, and memories that live on from generation to generation. Every spring, Americans look forward to heading to the ball park, smelling the grass and dirt and grabbing a hot dog and cracker jacks. For the past 15 years, the game of baseball has become more global. Some of the biggest stars in Major League Baseball have come from countries like Japan, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. This was especially evident at this summer’s World Cup Games hosted in Japan, Puerto Rico, and the United States. The World Cup games featured teams from Europe, Asia, and the America’s. The demographics of today’s game of baseball have changed. Latino Americans have been playing in the Major Leagues since 1902 with their presence growing in greater numbers every season. Today 25% of players on Major League rosters are Latino. That’s 204 players, including 91 from the Dominican Republic, 46 from Venezuela and 34 from Puerto Rico. According to ESPN Sports Poll, more U.S. Hispanics are fans of MLB than any other professional sport and the concentration of the MLB fan base in the U.S. that is Hispanic has grown over the past decade. Since 1996, the percentage of MLB fans that are Hispanic has increased by 31% from 9.5% to 12.4% (ESPN Sports Poll), and today
nearly 6.4 million Hispanics consider themselves Major League Baseball fans (Simmons Research). The biggest impact came during the decade of the 60’s and 70’s where future Hall of Fame caliber players began their careers. Players such as Roberto Clemente and Orlando Cepeda (Puerto Rico), Juan Marichal (Dominican Republic), Rod Carew (Panama), Luis Apparico (Venezuela) and Tony Perez (Cuba). Today, seven Latin American-born players are among the 258 players whose bronze plaques adorn the walls of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, there can be no doubt that their ranks in that shrine will swell in the coming years given the impact Hispanic players are having in the Majors today. Five of the past seven Most Valuable Players in the American League were Latinos, including Dominicans Miguel Tejada, Alex Rodríguez, and Vladimir Guerrero the past three seasons. Venezuelan Johan Santana was the AL’s Cy Young Award winner in 2004 after compiling a

20-6 record with a 2.61 earned run average. Ozzie Guillen, a native of Venezuela, become perhaps the most visible part of last seasons breakout year, in becoming the first Latino manager to win a World Series. This year Latinos will make more contributions as in past years. Look for the Latin American players to produce big during the 2006 playoff run and during the World Series. Latin Times Magazine would like to thank all the players for contributing to Hispanic Heritage!

One of the companies present was Western Union who had a great giveaway that was among the most popular items at the fair. It was a bandana with the name of different Latin American countries displayed on them. The Western Union line was very long as everyone wanted a cool bandana! And, what was great about the bandanas, the W.U. people would find your country and fold the bandana so your beloved country would be displayed prominently in the center of your forehead. It was perfect for everyone until Puerto Rican, after Puerto Rican, after Puerto Rican, after Puerto Rican (you get the picture) would get to the front of the line, only to find out that Western Union had chosen not to include Puerto Rico on their bandana EVEN THOUGH the event was held in a predominantly Puerto Rican community! Upon investigating the situation, Western Union Representatives informed us that Puerto Rico is not a country where many people wire money to or from therefore they had opted not to include it in their promotional items. Surely there was space on that bandana to put another itty-bitty ol’ flag on there!? Big Mistake... Apparently Western Union has no interest in conducting business with the Puerto Rican community… Not Cool, Western Union, Not Cool.
BochincheBlvd Need a new workout routine? Try Pilates!!
In 2006, everybody wants results so Pilates exercise can give you firmer abdominals, and improve your posture. You will achieve muscle tone that will lead you to increased vitality and if you stick to it you will look and feel younger….the natural way!! Are you ready to start? Take a deep breath in
through the nose; DEEP. Now exhale out through the mouth as you would when you are blowing air into a balloon. As you exhale, press the abdominal muscles into your spine. That is what we call in Pilates “navel to spine” and is a great way to tone your abdominals and bring oxygen to your body. Repeat three times. In Pilates training, it is not the quantity but the quality that counts. Now you are ready to join a class and learn how to put together the breathing with the movement. There are many great books but I recommend you to join a class to have the instructor watch your form and teach you modifica-
tions… You will have fun learning more and more about your body and the way it can move!! I hope to hear from you…e mail me your questions……let me know how I can help you achieve your fitness goals…my e- mail address is wilda@sa lsaandsoulfitness.com. I will see you in class!! Tropical Surf & Turf To celebrate its new, perfectly-paired Steak & Shrimp Combo Mambo, Pollo Tropical teamed up with legendary surf & turf authority Ron Jon® Surf Shops in creating a charity event that was sure to ride a big wave of tropical flavor and community philanthropy. The Pollo Tropical Steak & Shrimp Summer Surfing Contest took place August 11, 12 and 13 in three Florida coastal regions – but not in coastal waters. The contests utilized a patented RoboSurfer® - which has a 5’10” pro surfboard that is affixed to a programmable, mechanical base that simulates wave speeds of up to nine feet. A cold-air inflatable ocean ensured a safe surfing environment.
Winners of the three regional events advanced to the finals, which were held in Sanford, August 13 immediately following the regional contest. Each regional contest awarded more than $1,000 in Ron Jon surfing merchandise prize packs. Ethan Wade, the Grand Prize winner of the series, won a limited edition Ron Jon / Pollo Tropical signature surfboard as well as a four-day, three-night surfing safari in Rincon, Puerto Rico - courtesy of Spirit Airlines and Rincon Beach Resort.
The contest took place at Pollo Tropical locations in South Florida, West Palm Beach, and Central Florida. The winners for each region were Andrew Cuevas, Jose Roque and Ethan Ward, respectively.
Hispanic Vs White Vs Asian Vs Black Vs Hispanic? It’s the Battle of the Races….
One day before the official kick-off of Hispanic Heritage month, (which runs September 15 thru October 15, 2006) Thursday, September 14th, CBS premiered its 6th season of its pioneering reality series “Survivor” which is premiering its 2006 season by capitalizing on what could very well be America’s oldest and dirtiest subject in history, that of race and discrimination! Brilliant concept or a low blow by network television? With tensions so high in the world in regards
to race, especially that of immigrants and with most of those seeming to come from Latin countries, it still takes lots of “cojones” to pit race against race on prime time Television and on a reality series that encourages you to be very competitive and “real.” Remember that these contestants are not actors but regular people just like you and me. As we already know, Survivor audiences will be following their “favorite” teams closely and, I am curious, will this type of program insight hatred? Racism? Or worse…..!? The first episode of the race-based competition opened with online bookies offering 7-3 odds of the white team winning. To follow this season of Survivor stayed tuned to CBS. By: Jolie Gonzalez

CruisinLaCalle Willie Colon’s Live Performance at The Hard Rock LIVE!
Hillsborough County Hispanic Advisory Council Awards Dinner Congratulations to Deputy Juan Gonzalez who was honored!
Great Friday Nights continue @ Mirage
It was like a blast from the past when the legendary Willie Colon stepped out onto the stage of the Hard Rock LIVE. The crowd yelled, cheered, danced and some even looked a little sad. This was Willie Colon and most of us had grown up listening to his music in the 70 and 80’s when he was partnered up with such legendary performers as Hector Lavoe and Ruben Blades. Willie performed many songs from his huge list of hits, including “Gitana,” “Catalina,” “Pedro Navaja,” “Periodico de Ayer” and closed up with “El Gran Baron.” Willie looked a little older, pero he blew that horn like it was nobody’s business! He still knows how to put on one heck of a show!

“Salsa Caliente” in Tampa, Florida By Rosa Mercado
There once was a time 10 years ago when Erika Occhipinti had no clue about salsa-dancing. That was then. Fast forward to today – 28-year old Occhipinti now owns her own dance studio – Salsa Caliente in Tampa, Florida. The petite brunette born in Chicago, and raised in Tampa shares her skill with hundreds of students every week at Studio Inc. Night Club and Swing City Dance Studio. “It is the most passionate, sexy and fun form of dance,” Occhipinti said. “Latin clubs are much more fun that American clubs.” It all began with her college roommate at USF, who used to play salsa music. It peaked Occhipinti’s interest and she
began going to Latin clubs and learning to salsa dance. “I started taking “Rueda” lessons from an instructor from Miami,” said Occhipinti. Rueda is the popular Cuban salsa style where couples dance circular-style while continuously switching dance partners. Occhipinti was hooked. She was then offered a job by Salsa Heat based in Orlando, Florida.
Occhipinti shares instruction with Co-Director Juan Paredes and Instructor Mike McElwreath, in classes that are arranged by various skill levels.
Since then, Occhipinti has taught and performed at Salsa Congress events in New York and Orlando in addition to opening her own salsa dance studio six years ago. At Salsa Caliente, Occhipinti & her fellow instructors teach “New York” style salsa. Most salsa studios teach either the New York or L.A. styles. Occhipinti said the New York-style is more cool, laid back and sensual. “New York style is more linear – you dance on a straight line and do ‘spot’ turning - which means the girl stays in the same spot when she’s being turned,” explained Occhipinti. “LA-style is more flashy, and uses flips and dips.”
And for those who are intimidated by the thought of dancing solo? Edna Pabon, Assistant Instructor, said that’s not a problem here. “You don’t have to bring a partner,” Pabon said. “Classes are structured so that you continually rotate dance partners.”
• September/October 06 • Abraza El Calor De Tu Cultura!
“It’s so satisfying when you see students who start out knowing nothing & then progress into a good dancer,” Occhipinti said.
Pabon started taking classes a year ago after a break-up, and soon found she had a new passion – salsa. “It just gives you an incredible feeling!” Pabon said. For more information on Salsa Caliente’s classes, visit www.salsacaliente.com.
