CREW HOUSING BY SHELLEY ISAKOWITZ, SMART MOVE

As many of you know, Fort Lauderdale is known as the “Yachting Capital of the World” which hosts one of the largest boat shows in the world every year. As you can imagine our crew houses are at 100% occupancy with a very long waiting list. What this means is Jocelyn, who runs the front desk, and Tina, our front desk reservations team, work vigorously to ensure everyone has a place to stay. no matter how late, they will not leave the office until every single person has been taken care of. Many yachties leave their bookings to the last minute as is indicative of the industry. There is a constant juggle at the front desk, a “musical beds” if you will, in order for us to accommodate everyone as best we can. With a finite number of beds, the front desk feels the air of anxiety and frustration out there. As many of you know, we are different to other crew houses in Fort Lauderdale in that we don’t cram as many people as possible into a bedroom. Our houses have 2-3 people per bedroom. not a single one of our crew houses will have a room with 6-8 people – Smart Move is not that type of crew house.

6

During Boat Show season unless we monitor our crew houses very closely all aspects can get out of control very quickly. Everyone has to take responsibility for their trash, dishes and keeping their personal space tidy. It goes without saying that we do not allow overnight guests. While we hope you land a job quickly and move onto the boat, during your time with us, rules must be followed in order to avoid chaos. We have our cleaning service come in weekly to clean the common living areas and to make sure each and every crew house is maintained. We supply cleaning supplies for the week and in return we ask that you keep our crew houses clean and respected. Being involved in the industry for as long as we have, the culture of a crew house is very interesting especially over Boat show. What we find fascinating and what so many of our tenants do not realize is that while staying in our crew houses many of them are being interviewed, assessed, and evaluated without even knowing it. We have yachties staying with us that are looking for work, have landed a temporary job that hopefully becomes permanent and have been told to look out for more crew or have a permanent job and are looking for more crew. how their roommates conduct themselves while staying in one of our crew houses can be a deciding factor in getting a foot in the door. having respect for each other’s hours and varying schedules during Boat Show demonstrates a level of maturity that many employers are looking for. Crew house behavior and attitude is a true reflection on how you behave in the real world and gives those around you a glimpse into how

respectful you are of their time and space. You don’t really know someone until you have lived with them and it’s important to see what type of person you are and what type of crew member you would be. Once onboard, living in such close quarters for long periods of time you want a person of quality and living in a crew house allows you a peek into what people are truly like. While watching how your roommates behave in a crew house is important, the energy in a crew house during Boat Show is palpable! hopes are high and everyone is networking and looking for a great job. Everybody is up really early and attends all the major parties and networking events. Boat Show days are long and we know the last thing on your mind is paying your rent, so we make staying with us as easy as possible. We email you and call you asking if you want to extend or ask if we can run your card. Prefer to drop off the cash? We know it won’t be during business hours as you are super busy and that is no problem as we have a secure drop box with a security camera so it’s safe. And remember, set your mind at ease as the bed is yours until you tell us you are leaving. We will not rent it out from under you. Staying with Smart Move any time of year but especially of Boat Show is simple, convenient and fun. have a great and successful Boat Show 2015!!

New 52m Beach House Yacht From Kerwin Naval Architects

K

erwin Naval Architects, Inc., in association with CHY Design, are pleased to announce the design release of the second in a series of striking motoryachts, the 52m “Occam’s Razor” project. The design is based on completing an existing hull at Trinity Yachts, in order to afford the prospective owner a savings of about a year in construction time. However, the design can be utilized on other similar hulls or a newly designed one depending on owner preferences. The team members are Fred Hohenadel, an independent designer, Kevin M. Kerwin of Kerwin Naval Architects, Inc., and Bill Coxon, an awardwinning graduate of the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale Marine Industrial Design degree program. The team brings together many decades of experience in yachting, naval architecture, marine engineering, and the latest design methods utilizing 3D modeling and computeraided design. The “Occam’s Razor” project is the second in a series of yachts intended for a private owner who desires more personal interior living space than what would ordinarily be provided in a yacht designed for charter, but still wants to be under 500 tons. Charter accommodations are also available. The concept is that of a casual ocean going family beach house. The master shares a deck with the bridge, and has a very large aft facing private veranda. There are two very generous suites on the lower deck. The yacht features a spacious aft deck,

suitable for touch and go light helicopter operations, tender storage and partying. The stern has a fold down transom panel that transforms the area into a large swim platform, seating area, and tender embarkation platforms. Other features include an open plan salon and dining area, and a very roomy upper deck which includes a generous lounge area, full grilling facilities including refrigerator, and a large hot tub. A unique future is the solar activated awning style side windows that act as sunshades when required. The yacht also features extensive use of glass bulwarks facing aft on the master and upper decks allowing for unobstructed views, and retractable awnings for the owners veranda and main deck. Kerwin Naval Architects, Inc. have been performing engineering design of yachts and small commercial vessels, plus many refits and conversions as part of over 300 various projects since 1997. Kevin M. Kerwin, PE, President, has extensive experience in the design, refit, and construction of various cruisers, destroyers, submarines, oilfield supply vessels, tugs, fishing boats of various types, sailboats, ferries, USCG patrol and 47’ MLB lifesaving vessels, plus many motoryachts during his long career. He holds Professional Engineer licenses in the states of Florida and Louisiana. The company has designed everything from hull extensions, repowers, full interior redecorations, restyles, cockpit additions and more.

Please see the CHY Design website at www.CHY50.com for more information and illustrations of this and other yacht designs currently available, or contact Kerwin Naval Architects, Inc. at www.KerwinNavalArchitects.com.

NEW BEGINNINGS BY LINDSAY STEWART

nautic Crew Worldwide arrives to offer a renewed existence to what once was. In 2009, nautic Crew International was born from the partnership of two crew members who were ready to set roots ashore but, for their love of the industry, did not want to leave it far behind. For five years they grew their business while building an impressive reputation. And quite simply, one day after much thought, they made the decision to move on to achieve other life goals. In 2014, with heavy but hopeful hearts, the business was sold; all sights set for a smooth and uninterrupted transition. Alas, new management spent an arduous year fighting the odds in a competitive market and nautic Crew International was compelled to close its doors.

This year, at the helm of nautic Crew Worldwide stands Lindsay Stewart, Crew Placement Extraordinaire! If you have any doubt about her title, just ask around. Lindsay is known in the industry to have an incredible knack of knowing which crew best fit into which program for the long haul. Both her crew and her clients credit her for the heart and soul she puts into her work. Although the speed in which she makes placements make it all seem rather effortless, Lindsay works hard not only to maintain authentic relationships, but to understand both sides of the coin: offering her crew what they need for a happy workplace and career progression and what her

clients need in experience, skill set and attitude to round out their team. Accoutered with a degree in human Resource Management from Florida International university in 2007, Lindsay’s first job upon graduation landed her in crew placement. After months of hearing first-hand stories of travel and adventure from crew (undeterred by the “glamourous” work that was actually required), Lindsay had initial plans to sail the seas proper as a yachtie before settling into a land based career. But her desire to stay close to family lead to the ultimate decision to stay ashore. having grown a swift affinity to the people of the industry, Lindsay decided that if she wouldn’t be crew herself, she could facilitate the placement process for crew and clients and be their conduit to success. Lindsay has worked in crew placement ever since. It’s the only industry she knows and she loves it! When the surprise opportunity came round for her to acquire nautic Crew, she jumped at the opportunity to rebrand something as her own. It’s literally sink or swim in the competitive world of crew placement and Lindsay has her suit on and is ready to swim! Find out more about Lindsay Stewart’s nautic Crew Worldwide at www.nauticcrewworldwide.com.

NORTHERN STAR Yacht nORThERn STAR For Sale

Luxury Motor Yacht nORThERn STAR was designed to cruise all oceans of the world with very limited stops. The owner, an experienced ocean and cruising sailor, required top-notch design and engineering coupled with seagoing comfort for his guests and crew. This was achieved by bringing together the huge amount of experience and knowledge possessed by Moran Yacht & Ship and the captain, Craig Franks, to supervise the entire build process. Espen Oeino gave nORThERn STAR a very traditional appearance, reflecting the owner’s style. She is built to the highest technical standards possible and features an abundance of

practical and useful features. Capacious outdoor spaces aft, forward and on the sundeck provide tremendous seating space for open air dining and lounging. The interior, designed by Pauline nunns, can best be described as a grand country home. This traditional styling is complemented perfectly by the exterior, designed by Espen Oeino. nORThERn STAR’s six decks offer her twelve guests an enormous amount of space for both entertainment and relaxation.

Power by 2 CAT engines, she can reach a top speed of 17 knots and has a range of 6000 nautical miles. Advanced sound and vibration features guarantee an extremely quiet ride, while her ice strengthened hull design and stabilization system provide for maximum comfort both under way and at anchor. nORThERn STAR is a yacht built for pleasure, but above all other considerations, it is a vessel intended to be self-sufficient during extended voyages on the high seas.

We recently sat down with President Andrew Cilla and newly minted VP Jason Dunbar to discuss the history and philosophy of Luke Brown Yachts.

For those new to the yachting game, where does the name Luke Brown come from?

Can you compare Luke What is unique about Brown Yachts then to Luke Brown and how what Luke Brown Yachts might they differentiate is today? from competitors? Andrew: We have grown from humble beginnings and have remained humble throughout our expansion of offering more sales and brokerage options as well as offering our expertise to clients wishing to build their own custom yachts. While our clientele has grown, so has our company with twenty full-time brokers and additional administrative staff who offer years of practical experience and knowledge to their clients. But our philosophy has always remained the same! We maintain a traditional heritage and our mission is designed around organic growth that stems from keeping the client happy. Looking after our clients is looking after our business.

Andrew: We offer the best personalized customer service along with a wealth of experience from myself, Jason, our brokers and admin staff which has helped our soaring reputation. We have customized software that allows us to match the client with the best broker who will have the strongest knowledge and experience pertaining to that customer and vessel thereby offering the client with a tailored experience. I am personally involved in every deal and if a client’s broker is unavailable or simply would like to speak further with me, I am always just a phone call away.

Andrew: Luke Brown was a boat enthusiast from Cleveland, Ohio who, like many of us who have entered the industry, quit the corporate world to pursue his dream of working and living on the sea. In 1969, he turned his hand to yacht brokerage, set up in Fort Lauderdale and began the business of selling offshore sail yachts and trawlers, growing the business to include power and sail yachts of all sizes. In 1977, as the youngest broker in the firm at age 27, I was lucky enough to purchase the company and continue its expansion under the Luke Brown name.

Jason, what is your Luke Brown story? Jason: In 1995, I was working in Miami as a captain and just wanted to break into a brokerage role. I sort of thought I would just walk in and get the job but that was not the case! They initially told me that no positions were available and I walked away disappointed. But several weeks later, I got a call. I’ll admit to walking in prepared with a list of requirements I “needed” to take the job. But listening to Andrew speak of the company and its client relationships . . . I’ve never worked at a company before that was so client-centric. In my experience, the client-centric approach is practically unheard of. Elsewhere, office spaces are filled with boards posted with financial targets and the brokers are numbers driven versus cultivating client relationships. When Andrew was done talking, I threw all my “requirements” out the window and I just said YES! to the job. now, twenty years later . . . the rest is history.

Congratulations on your recent promotion to Vice President! What does the future entail? Jason: It feels fantastic to be such an integral part of Luke Brown’s future vision! Andrew has been a fantastic mentor and he’s done a wonderful job of branding the client-centric philosophy throughout the company and all his relationships. That business culture is what makes us so successful and I want to carry that through and continue to instill that into our younger brokers.

What is the most What does the future important event on hold for Luke Brown the Luke Brown annual Yachts? calendar? Andrew: Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, of course! As Fort Lauderdale is the yachting capital of the world, naturally is has the best boat show of the world and it’s excellently well run. Filled with the world’s most prestigious yachts, it follows also that FLIBS attracts the best of the newest and most experienced talent in the industry. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, from crew to owners: really, anyone and everyone connected to the industry. Much of our success comes from nurturing our relationships in and around the show which fosters our personal peak business time of February/March.

How many boats does Luke Brown Yachts have in the show and where can they be seen? Andrew: We are showing twelve vessels at this year’s FLIBS. Most of them will be located on Las Olas Marina B Dock and a few others along Bahia Mar Marina B Dock.

Andrew: We aim to remain smart about our business and strive not for mass but for quality. The industry shows that the mid-size companies remain the most successful in terms of longevity. They may not be as cash rich but they remain stable and better able to weather financial storms. We continue to aim for organic growth and maintain our strong reputation by providing stellar customer service. We continue to integrate younger staff into our philosophy and business, as Jason and I started relatively young, and have them mentored by our team of heavily experienced members so that the Luke Brown heritage will remain reliable and effective for another 50 years. Sounds like a great business plan to us! Andrew has plans to continue mentoring Jason and the rest of the team, eventually making way for Jason to fill the president role in another ten years or so. That’s a great succession plan which spells great news for Luke Brown and their clients. For more information, please visit the website at www.lukebrownyachts.com. Interview conducted by John Martin. WINDOW TREATMENTS Window treatments are often one of the more challenging items owners, captains or chief stews have to tend to. Specialty shapes and pitched angles create limitations for both form and function. here are a few commonly-used window treatments with their pros and cons: Wood Blinds have been used for decades and for good reason – they can generally be cut to fit most specialty shapes, have a wide range of species and stain options, can make use of a retention or guide wire to alleviate movement, and offer the ability to raise/lower (depending on the shape of the window) and tilt open/closed for privacy. A couple of drawbacks to consider: wood blinds can be noisy in rough conditions and they are not a sufficient blackout (room-darkening) treatment. Cellular or honeycomb Shades are another popular choice. Cellular shades also have a wide range of color options and are suitable for angle-cut windows. Cellular shades are available in translucent or blackout options, of which the latter helps reduce uV rays and heat. The primary limitation of honeycomb shades is they are either up for viewing out or down for privacy – there is no tilt ability. Sheer horizontal or “Silhouette” Shades offer the best of both worlds. Sheer horizontal shades feature horizontal vanes of fabric suspended on both sides by sheer fabric. This allows for a lightfiltering “sheer” effect when the vanes are flat, and when the horizontal vanes are tilted closed, provides privacy and room darkening. Sheer horizontals are available in a range of neutrals and some colors and are suitable for angle-cut windows. The primary concern when considering sheer horizontal shades is the space available for mounting the shade head rail as it is fairly larger than other window treatments. Roman shades allow the owner and/or decorator to get creative with fabric. With countless fabric options and many styles of Romans available, this window treatment is perfect for the expression of personal style. Blackout lining can be added to the fabric for room darkening, and a wire retention system may be used to keep the Romans in place while at sea. Similar to honeycomb or cellular shades, Roman shades do not offer tilt-ability.

These are a few of the more common window treatments used on today’s yachts. The “right” window treatment depends primarily on functionality – the space available for installation and operation. Once functionality has been determined, form – or desired style, color and features come into play. Fabrics and custom window treatments available through Yacht Décor, Inc. www.yachtdecorinc.com

VARIABLE REFRIGERANT VOLUME TECHNOLOGY THE WAY AHEAD Is the technology that is revolutionizing the market. What is the best system? Direct expansion with a self contained unit or chilled water? The self contained unit offers more cooling in a smaller size but the compressor is noisy, continues to start/stop and can’t accurately control the cabin temperature. Chilled water fix the start/stop trouble but the thermal inerthia of the water require 40% of power more than DX and the loop temperature can’t work at 40∞F due to freezing point of the water and can’t provide accurate dehumidification. Termodinamica provides the compressor stage in an engine room and it connects with 2 pipes of the refrigerant line and all the air handlers in the boat. The compressor works at variable speeds (500-6000rpm) providing the best related cooling power. Every AH installs an Electronic Expansion Valve (EEV) that, with 500 positions manages the direct refrigerant flow in the AH and the coil working temperature in the range 14∞ to 60∞F in cooling and 68∞ to 130∞F in heating

ROOM TEMPERATURE

LOWER TEMPERATURE (comfortability decreased)

Reaches a more comfortable temperature faster

Given that power cannot be adjusted, the desired temperature is slowly reached and can be rarely maintained.

A comfortable temperature is constantly maintained.

COMFORT

INVERTER Air conditioning HIGHER TEMPERATURE (comfortability decreased)

Cooling capacity is controlled; Power consumption is contained; Comfortability is increased.

Room temperature becomes too cool, after awhile the room temperature becomes too hot and so on…

STANDARD Air conditioning

A boat with this extreme and wide temperature range can quickly reach the desired temperature in Florida, but also at the North Pole. Our system accurately controls humidity, when the temperature set point is reached the air diffuser will be provided with the desired air at the right temperature.

With one EEV on every AH each cabin can work totally independent from one to another, but with VRV the temperature of every AH is different. Not like chilled water where the temperature is the same for all.

With Termodinamica’s system, only one compressor box can manage all the air handlers in the boat without limitations. When you switch on the air handler it communicates with the compressor box and its thermal power re uirements will be produced at a specific speed. hen ou switch on the second air handler, the compressor will increase the speed to satisfy the desired temperature and so on for the third air handler. Compressor’s wide speed range (500 to 6000rpm) can control very accurately the boats thermal load without energy waste and provide superior comfort with perfect set point keeping. The superior quality of Termodinamica’s system will be over all expectations. Our refrigerant line is smaller than the water lines and its size is compressed between 1/4” and 1î, ver simple to refit ever t pe of boat.

TITANIUM SEA WATER COIL

Totally different from the old co-axial tubes in standard systems, which has low efficienc . Termodinamica’s condenser consists of a fully TIG welded, pure titanium cylinder with a gas flow inside a flooded tube. This special condenser eliminates problems of maximum power absorption with the changing of sea water temperatures like co-axial condensers. This improves the r410a condensation process and increases the efficienc of the s stem with an average of 62%. This has a weight reduction of around 70% Compared to Copper-nickel.

COMPRESSOR BOX Every model is crafted with an advanced design criteria. Materials are chosen for its quality and reliability for marine application but also for its weight. A wide use of aluminum aviation grade anodized with silver and stainless steel 316 offers a superior construction quality, with lower weight than any other competitor.

Use of inverter compressor and titanium condenser Allows an important size reduction.

LA CUCINA VENIZIANA 3471 N FEDERAL HWY, OAKLAND PARK, FL 33306 (954) 990-5435 • WWW.LACUCINAVENEZIANA.NET

RESTAURANT REVIEW BY KARA A. KELLAR didn’t know the name of Chef Fabio’s restaurant for over a year after I first had the pleasure of dining there. La Cucina Veniziana, an Italian restaurant offering unpretentious and elevated Italian fare, is fondly referred to within my circle as simply, Fabio’s. he and his capable team produce the sort of meal that speaks for itself, actually it usually sings. On a typical night you’ll be greeted and seated by one of his friendly wait staff who will walk you through nightly specials and delectable regional wines to pair with your feast in the simple, yet elegant dining room. Without further gilding the lily, let’s talk food. You must start with the Canederly, a Venetian meatball, which is made from various cheeses and cured meats, once cooked it’s then smothered in browned butter and crispy sage. I usually section some off and spread it (Yes, it’s spreadable!) on a slice of crusty Italian bread; there is no comfort food quite like Fabio’s Canederly. If you’re not a fan of bruschetta, you’re reading the wrong article because La Cucina’s bruschetta is nothing short of transcendent. With offerings from burrata to truffles and the ability to build your own bruschetta masterpiece, the only problem you’ll have will be selecting only one to try. Occasionally, Polipo is available which is Fabio’s grilled octopus served with potatoes and arugula. I have tried every octopus dish that has come

across a menu in Fort Lauderdale and this is by far my favorite, and well worth a try. For your main I highly suggest the Coniglio Arrosto, a deboned rabbit roulade stuffed with shiitake mushrooms and rabbit meat served with a shiitake reduction gravy with slices of polenta, roasted tomato, and a spinach timbale. If you’re

looking for something more rustic, the Amatriciana pasta with bacon, tomato and crushed red pepper is simple and delicious, I order it with meatballs and paperdelle pasta. If you’re a fan of duck, the All’anitra, paperdelle pasta with hand-shredded duck and cheese, is a decadent treat. If you’re still in the market for dessert, I highly recommend the velvety panna cotta with berry puree or the tiramisu, an Italian classic. Sometimes, your meal is accompanied with Fabio’s homemade limoncello, also a favorite of mine. no matter your choice of meal, you are sure to enjoy your experience at Fabio’s!

For those who need a convenient meal to go, La Cucina Veniziana has recently launched the Venetian Marketplace. The fresh meals, prepared daily, that contain no fillers or preservatives from the Venetian Marketplace are the ideal solution for anyone from individuals to those responsible for provisioning for yachts and private aircrafts that need Italian food and products on the go.
