N AT U R A L WO N D E R S The landscape surrounding Laughlin is a startling contrast between desert and water. Tucked amid the granite canyons and primitive backcountry are desert treasures just waiting to be discovered. For the outdoorsman, whether hiker, biker or off-road adventurer, the possibilities are limitless. A few local favorites include the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, the Hualapai Mountains, Black Canyon and Grapevine Canyon.

LAKEâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

Two powerful forces molded this hospitable landscape - nature and technology - one over millions of years, the other in the last few decades. Lake Mead National Recreation Area provides spectacular scenic vistas of the lakes and rugged and isolated backcountry. Striking and dramatic physical features include deep canyons, dry washes, sheer cliffs, distant mountain ranges, the lakes, colorful soils and rock formations and mosaics of different vegetation. A network of backcountry roads has been developed to provide access to the lakeshore and other areas of interest in the backcountry. Approved roads are signed with yellow arrows.

GRAPEVINE CANYON For centuries, Native American tribal shamans have visited Grapevine Canyon to receive and renew their powers. The site represents the largest concentration of petroglyphs in southern Nevada and contains rock art many believe to be more than 1,000 years old. A result of hundreds of years of ceremonies, many of the markings are covered over. Geometric shapes, human figures and animals can be deciphered in the many markings. After a short 1/2 mile hike from the trail head, thousands of petroglyphs come into view, beginning at eye level and extending up the canyon wall, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more to this desert canyon than culture. Wild grapevines cover large sections of the canyon wall and during rainy seasons, three separate, spectacular waterfalls cascade from the walls. If you visit Grapevine canyon please remember this is a holy site for the Aha Macav people. Leave no trace.

HUALAPAI MOUNTAINS The Hualapai Mountains, located near Kingman, are where area locals go to escape the heat. Encompassing more than 2,300 acres with elevations ranging from 4,984 to 8,417 feet, visitors can easily experience the cool and clear beauty of pine country. Hualapai Mountain Park was first developed during the early 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and is now maintained by the Mohave County Parks Department. The roads, trails, picnic and camping areas, along with the stone cabins and pavilions, are still much as they were 50 years ago, helping to give the park its own unique character. The name “Hualapai” means “pine tree folk,” and is derived from the name of the Indian tribe that once called these mountains home until they were relocated by the military in the 1870s. There are plenty of hiking trails, picnic areas, camp sites, horseback riding trails, ATV trails, group recreation areas, scenic look-out areas, wildlife viewing and more. Hualapai Mountain Park is located 14 miles southeast of Kingman, Arizona, at 6250 Hualapai Mountain Road. For more information, or to make reservations, call 928-681-5700.

BLACK CANYON Not only can you find rivers and lakes near Laughlin, desert springs abound. The springs found in Black Canyon, with water temperatures ranging from about 55 to 136 degrees, come in many forms — large seeps with wet rock faces up to 100 feet long, spring fed brooks that discharge into the Colorado River and those that discharge water from the Black Canyon walls directly. A few of these features, such as Nevada Hot Spring and Arizona Hot Spring, can be reached by hiking. Others such as the springs in Boy Scout Canyon, can only be reached by boat. Nevada Hot Spring, accessed via a trail head located off Highway 93 on the Nevada side of Hoover Dam, is located within Goldstrike Canyon. This spring (actually series of springs, located on Bureau of Reclamation land) produces a number of picturesque pools of varying temperatures, as well as lovely waterfalls. Arizona Hot Spring, located about 4 miles south of Hoover Dam, can be accessed via a scenic hiking trail located off Highway 93 on the Arizona side of the Colorado River. It produces fairly constant 111 degree water that drops through several small pools.

LAKE HAVASU NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Protecting more than 30 river miles and 300 miles of shoreline, the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1941, is home to thousands of birds and animals who rely on the life-giving waters. A great river in a dry, hot land attracts wildlife and people like a powerful magnet. Today, many thousands of visitors annually flock to the refuge to boat through the spectacular Topock Gorge, watch waterbirds, or hike the Havasu Wilderness Area. A favorite for many visitors is the 4,000-acre Topock Marsh, created from a historical river meander in 1966 when the South Dike outlet structure was constructed. Presently, the marsh represents over 40 percent of the remaining backwaters of the Colorado River and serves as a critical resting place for migratory waterfowl and a home to resident songbirds, waterbirds, and other wildlife. This area is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Kayakers and canoers enjoy the solitude of the marsh and the limited availability to motorized boats.

WATER RECREATION Laughlin may be situated in the middle of the Mojave Desert, but it is surrounded by water recreation opportunities. With the Colorado River flowing by and Lake Mohave only minutes away, the hard part is deciding between fishing, boating, jet skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing or tubing.

Boating, jet skiing, skiing...

Those who already own their toys need only registered vehicles and a place to dock. Those looking to rent a little fun for the weekend or a couple of hours have plenty of options. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which includes Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, offers concessions supplying houseboats, ski boats, jet skis and float trips. Boating of all kinds is allowed in Lake Mohave, so long as safety laws and regulations are followed.

Canoeing and kayaking... River guides are available to launch and pick up canoes and kayaks along the Colorado River and Lake Mohave. Popular trips include Davis Dam to Rotary Park in Bullhead City, Topock Gorge, Black Canyon from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach and still water tours of Lake Mohave. With cool water temperatures year round, kayaking and canoeing can be had 12 months a year.

Fishing...

Largemouth bass, striped bass, channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill are found in both Lakes Mead and Mohave, as well as the Colorado River. Rainbow trout can be found in Lake Mohave and record breaking specimens are often caught at Willow Beach. Cottonwood Cove, Davis Camp and Katherine Landing offer great bass and trout fishing. A trout stamp is required in addition to any other use stamps if you intend to catch and keep trout in Lake Mohave.You may purchase licenses from the concessionaires at the marinas or at local bait and tackle shops. No matter where you drop anchor, fishing licenses are required. If you will be fishing in the Colorado River or on Lake Mohave, make sure your permit allows you to fish in both states.

Scuba diving...

Explore the emerald world of Lake Mohave or the moving waters of the Colorado River with an airtank and scuba equipment. Whether an experienced diver or a novice hoping to get their fins, Lake Mohave offers several diving scenarios. Buses, boats and other underwater adventures await. Scour the bed of the Colorado and see evidence of a bygone steamboat era. Or stumble upon modern pirate booty — lost keys, jewelry and sunglasses.

FISHERMAN'S ACCESS PARK

Fisherman's Access Park in Laughlin, in between the Laughlin Bridge and the Riverside Resort has been redesigned with several cosmetic improvements and upgrades to better serve more people at a cost of $5 million. The remodeling project for Fisherman's Access Park was a joint public-private venture between Laughlin founder Don Laughlin and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. In addition to new asphalt, improvements include reducing water use for grass; making the park more ADA compliant; reconstructing the launch ramp, providing a dedicated law enforcement and new public-use dock; picnic ramadas, a redesign of the Flag Plaza in conjunction with the Laughlin American Legion; providing additional parking spaces for vehicles with boat trailers, and providing an area for people to fish from the bank.

DAVIS CAMP

No matter whether you're looking to put a boat in the water, a campsite with amenities so you're not quite "roughing it," a place for the kids to burn off some energy splashing around or you'd simply like to find a quiet spot under a tree to enjoy a juicy novel, Davis Camp is that place. Nestled in between the Laughlin Bridge and Davis Dam on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, Davis Camp is the place to relax for a few days or enjoy an action-packed weekend on the river. Maintained by the Mohave County Parks Department, they offer vacation homes for rent, spaces with full hookups for trailers or RVs and they have plenty of campsites along the palm-tree lined beach for campers and tent spots. There is a sanitary disposal (dump station) for park guests, along with shower buildings and laundry facilities. Day use is permitted in the picnic areas, along with swim beaches, fishing along the shores and a boat launch. Pyramid Canyon Loop Trail The half-mile trail is accessible and leads to picnic areas, a splash pad, 3 accessible fishing piers, and 1.5 miles of shoreline access. Located just below Davis Dam, it’s a great spot for family outings. Riverwalk Exploration Trail This accessible 2 mile trail provides access to picnicking and shade shelters, fishing, and the Colorado River. This trail is great for bird watching, biking and a leisurely walk. Horseshoe Trail An equestrian 2.75 mile trail that allows cyclists, and a more challenging hike. This trail features scenic vistas of the Colorado River, Davis Dam, Lake

HOW IT BEGAN

Development of the project concept started in 2000. Nevada’s Clark County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution supporting increased recreation opportunities at Davis Dam in Laughlin, Nevada in August 2001. Clark County and Bureau of Reclamation signed a Reclamation Recreation Purpose Lease on December 16, 2009, for 1,191 acres of land for a regional park, special events area, golf complex and other facilities. Clark County and the National Park Service signed a similar land use agreement on May 18, 2010.

was awarded again in 2013. The AGO mission is to foster a 21st century approach to conservation that is designed by and accomplished with partners for the benefit of the American people. One of AGO’s objectives is to engage, educate, and employ young people. Another is to reconnect Americans with their outdoor heritage and recreation opportunities on public lands.

NEARBY AT T R AC T I O N S ROUTE 66 With the longest continuous stretch of Route 66 just minutes from Laughlin, it would be a shame to pass up this preserved piece of American history. Stretching from the Black to the Upland mountains, “The Mother Road” meanders from Oatman to Kingman, south to Valle Vista and Hackberry before making its eastward voyage to Peach Springs and Seligman. Enjoy the journey with a stop at the pass where the weather challenges motorists to make the climb without overheating their engines; scout a vintage gas station that opened its doors when Route 66 was seen as the highway to a better life; meet the “Angel of Route 66,” Angel Delgadillo, who is credited with bringing life back to “America’s Main Street”; and take a moment to explore the Keepers of the Wild Nature Park, a retreat dedicated to saving captive wild animals.

OATMAN One of Arizonaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most charismatic Old West towns, Oatman was once a thriving mining metropolis. Men grew rich from the fertile mines of the Black Mountains and the town flourished under their largess. Opulent hotels and saloons lined the streets and Hollywood movie stars, such as Clark Gable and Carol Lombard, used the Route 66 stop as a getaway from the hustle and bustle of California. The Oatman Hotel is still standing and is said to house the ghosts of the two lovebirds. No longer the rich gold mining town of its heyday, Oatman retained the charm that attracted settlers more than a century ago. Home to begging burros, gun fights in the street and sassy ladies, the town attracts visitors from across the globe.

GRAND CANYON WEST Less than 120 miles from Laughlin, beyond the hills of Kingman, sits one of Mother Nature’s greatest wonders — the Grand Canyon. The West Rim, home of Eagle Point, the 4,000-foot-high glass-bottomed Skywalk, Guano Point, the Hualapai Tribe Indian Village, Hualapai Ranch and Yellowhair’s Trading Post, is often overshadowed by the North Rim, but more and more visitors are flocking to this untarnished, natural wonder.

LOC AL WILDLIFE A diverse group of plants and animals call the Mojave Desert home. Copious amounts of water in the desert environment lend to a heterogeneous population of furry, prickly, hardy and abundant wildlife. Birdwatchers from across the globe flock to the Tri-state to observe the numerous species who call the vibrant river valley home, including bald eagles, thrashers, black tailed gnatcatchers, roadrunners, ospreys and falcons. Many only winter in the desert but several remain year round. Birds aren’t the only winged creatures calling the Tri-state home. Laughlin hosts 17 of the region’s 28 bat species, including the myotis brown bat, spotted bat and Townsend’s Big-eared bat. While in Laughlin also look for desert tortoise, beaver, big horn sheep, mountain lion, jack rabbit, badger, raccoon, fox, skunk, wild horse, wild burro, bobcat, gila monster, chuckwalla, sidewinder, Mojave rattlesnake, western diamondback, scorpion, tarantula and horned lizard. F O RT M O J AV E INDIAN TRIBE Avi Kwa Ame, the center of creation for the Aha Macav people, stands proud and tall in the Newberry Mountains, looking down on the reservation of her people. For thousands of years, the Aha Macav have called the fertile river valley home, beginning with Matavilya, creator of the people and the vibrant river valley. According the Mojave culture, Matavilya placed the plants and animals along the river for the Pipa Aha Macav and instructed them in the art of civilization. Prosperous farmers by the time the Spaniards began exploring the Southwest, the Aha Macav, or the Mojave as they were later coined, established villages and trade routes stretching to the Pacific Ocean. One hundred years later, as the American frontier opened and hordes of settlers drifted west, the Mojave resented the influx of disease and loss of land. They resisted the inflow of migrants crossing the Colorado River on the California Trail, resulting in the establishment of Fort Mojave as a military outpost in 1859. Spanning land in Nevada, California and Arizona, the current boundaries of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe extend along the Colorado River, covering 41,914 acres. Home to 1,120 people, the tribe is one of the wealthiest in the Southwest. Agriculture is the basis for the Fort

Mojave economy, with 15,000 acres of land under cultivation. Unlike most reservations in Arizona, occupancy of tribal land is less than 50 percent Native American. Much of the land is leased to farmers for the growth of soybeans, alfalfa, cotton, corn and wheat. More than 17 miles of the Colorado River runs through tribal land, creating many recreational opportunities for visitors, including fishing, water skiing, boating and hunting. HISTORY Once a motel and bar that catered to gold and silver miners, Laughlin has blossomed into one the fastest growing tourist destinations in the United States. Originally established in the 1940s, the river community was little more than a mining camp. The construction of Davis Dam brought a rush of hard working men to the South Pointe bar and motel, but after construction was completed in 1951, the establishments were abandoned. It wasn’t until Las Vegas businessman Don Laughlin flew over the area, recognizing its promise, that the Nevada community began to flourish. The property was purchased in 1964 and within two years the Riverside Resort was offering all-you-can-eat chicken dinners for 98 cents, play on 12 slot machines and two gaming tables. Guest accommodations were available in four of the eight hotel rooms and the Laughlin family resided in the remaining four. In 1972, the Riverside added 48 rooms. In 1986 the 14-floor high rise was completed. Playing off Don Laughlin’s success, the Bobcat Club (located where the Golden Nugget sits today) opened in 1967. In 1968, a third casino followed. Today, Laughlin is home to 11 casinos, more than 60 restaurants, a museum, boutiques, spas, salons and sold-out events, attracting more than 2 million visitors annually.

AVI KWA AME POW WOW • FEBRUARY Native Americans from across the country gather on the banks of the Colorado River for the annual pow wow, a festival honoring the traditional dance, costumes and cultures of the many participating tribes. The event includes competition in various traditional Native American dances, as well as vendor booths serving Native American food and handmade Indian arts and crafts. It is presented by the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe.

AVI RIVER STAMPEDE & XTREME BULLS MARCH/APRIL These two events combine for one explosive weekend when it comes rodeo action. Enjoy all the traditional PRCA rodeo events like bull riding, bareback and saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping and cowgirl barrel racing along with the premier PRCA-sanctioned Xtreme Bulls event. This competition features the world's top bull riders who have earned a spot in this invitational based on ride scores throughout the year. Laughlin/BullheaD 5K cancer walk MARCH The Laughlin Chamber of Commerce along with chamber and community volunteers have organized this event to raise money to help patients and their families with travel expenses for treatments and with necessary related items to ensure quality of life. RUN LAUGHLIN • DECEMBER COLORADO RIVER REGATTA • AUGUST Laughlin and Bullhead City unite to bring fun to the river. The annual river regatta attracts floats of all shapes and sizes and people from all over the country to celebrate the Colorado River. Thousands hit the water competing or trophies and bragging rights. Festivities kick off Friday with a pre-registration party but the real fun gets underway Saturday, bright and early as participants pull out all the stops when it comes to having fun.

This early-morning half marathon and 5K has participants competing on a challenging scenic course through breathtaking and varied desert landscapes. Laughlin event center The newest and largest outdoor entertainment facility in the area, the Laughlin Event Center is a spectacular venue for concerts, festivals, rodeos, bull riding, extreme sports and other special events.
