MAMe INTERMODAL HUB REGENERATION ROGOREDO, MILANO The thesis deals with the role of infrastructural nodes of the contemporary metropolis, where mobility represents one of the main challenges to inhabit the territory. The power of Infrastructure is to show the relationship between individuals and the city in a much more emblematic way than what is usually perceived as “urban landscape as it identifies the main characteristic of the metropolitan genius loci: the everyday life of human mobility. The reinterpretation of the infrastructures according to the social and cultural meaning of the public space becomes fundamental to redefine a sense of belonging in a place neglected by the same temporariness of its use. The proposed design consists in the rehabilitation of a strategical infrastructural node (Milano Rogoredo) as an attractive centre and a representative public space in the surrounding urban system, with the aim to generate surplus value able to fund public interventions of reconnection with the territory and the milanese rural context. In fact, the area is elected for its strategic conditions due to its accessibility and the evolving context which represent an opportunity for urban regeneration. Because of the complexity of the transformation, different scenarios were developed to find the most socially, economically and environmentally balanced through a Multicriteria Analysis. The thesis also includes a S.W.O.T. and Stakeholder Analysis, in order to fully understand the strategic area. Moreover, The design part focuses on the new public square of the station and on the rest of public spaces as the backbone for the regeneration. In addition, it provides for a new public complex: MAMe (Mercato Agricolo Metropolitano / Agricultural Metropolitan Market) that will be a distribution point for agricultural products from the Parco Agricolo Sud; and a private one: the new Anas headquarters as a replacement of the old vehicle fleet in bad conditions. Such a new configuration is also able to provide an improved mobility of the intermodal hub, more appropriate to his strategic role. Finally, the design is supported at every stage by an economic feasibility study in order to guide it toward value creation and improve his resilience to unforeseeable economic developments that could happen across a broad time horizon. 7

LE. THERMAL BATH / RENOVATION OF THE ELIOTHERAPIC COLONY BY BBPR LEGNANO, MILANO
new internal distribution
thermal cure hotel medical clinics
The work shows the renovation project of the heliotherapy colony originally designed by BBPR in 1938, under the fascist regime. Currently a forgotten ruin, the colony is still a great example of Italian Rationalism. It was firstly modified in 1955, by being converted in a cure centre for job injuries. In this phase there was a part added and another one destroyed. Since the 1980s the original part of the colony has been left abandoned in a really bad state. The design introduces a new function in the entire architectural ensemble: a thermal centre with cutting-edge therapy, in line with the healthcare vocation of the city of Legnano and the building itself. It hosts thermal cure spaces, medical clinics and a hotel for patients and guests. The addition is strongly distinguishable and constructively separated from the existing surfaces, which remain “frozen in their condition of ruin, with a minimum necessary maintenance. In this way the building gets another life by keeping and showing his historical value, his patina and stratification. 25

CAMPUS -LA GOCCIA- / REGENERATION OF A DEINDUSTRIALIZED AREA BOVISA, MILANO The project circumscribes a portion of the “Goccia” of Bovisa: a big urban void in Milan, by promoting its transformation. The masterplan is composed of linear residential blocks at the edges and singular public buildings in the inner part. The linear buildings on the edge are disposed in order to invite the Campus of Politecnico of Milan nearby. The singular elements are renovated existing buildings (objets trouvés) except for the new library: a public tower that dialogue with the horizon of the city. The library is a monumental door facing the university. It is connected to the campus through a path that crosses the existing gasometer that now hosts outdoor events . It is composed of a dense and regular side with offices and services, and a freer side with the library itself, where the book spaces envelop the reading areas evoking the idea of a multidisciplinary knowledge.

RE. COVER / RENOVATION OF A DISUSED TERTIARY BUILDING VIA RIPAMONTI, MILANO The design provides for the renovation of a tertiary building located in Via Ripamonti, left abandoned since 2004. The architectural complex is composed of a linear building (6 floors) which is facing the street, together with a plate building (2 floors) on the back. The buildings are situated into a developing area of Milano so the functions inside them could change in the coming years. For this reason, the design searches for the maximum internal flexibility through a modular organization of the installations in order to enable different spatial configurations. In addition, the design works on a new envelope compatible with program changes, that improves the quality of the architecture. The taller building, temporarily converted into residences for families and students, communicates with two different realities: the road facade is organized according to a grid that reflects the original structural one, in order to accomodate any internal configuration. The internal facade presents itself with a more domestic image, as opposed to the earlier, more urban and rigorous. The plate building becomes an event space for the city. Since the structures of the buildings are in good condition, the structural design is focused on anti-seismic reinforcement.

PERFORMANCE PATH / INUJIMA ISLAND AS AN ART CENTRE JAPAN
Inujima Advanced Architectural Design Studio held by: Kazuyo Sejima, Lars Jonas Hugo Elding Inujima is a small island of Okayama in the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. It is so small that it is possible to visit it by foot in about two hours. Today, the remaining inhabitants are less than 30 and are all over 80 years old. They all live in the village near to the port. In recent years the island has become a seat of the Triennial Setouchi giving the island an artistic vocation. In the village Kazuyo Sejima started the “Inujima Art House Project in 2010 by transforming empty homes and lots into exhibition spaces. Because of that, the landscape started to change slowly, so that now the island attracts 30,000 visitors per year. Our project aims to promote a new kind of tourism by creating three pavilions where it is made possible to stay for a longer period and do activities related to art and to the Triennal Setouchi. The design also extends the existing paths in order to discover new parts of the island, which are currently difficult to have access to. The path begins at the harbor and develops through the mountains leading to the beach. The first step is the Circus Arena, the second is the Music Centre pavilion which is located between the two existing quarries and allows a view over them. The last pavilion is the Theatre Academy, that works as a node between the existing and the new path. 51
