Instinct why the octopus ?
The octopus is the one of the most fascinating and beautiful creatures I have ever seen. It is a metaphor for certain characteristics I admire — instinct, creativity and reason. Instinct is a natural impulse, also known as a ‘gut reaction’ — It is the feeling I rely on the most in my design choices. The drawing of the octopus was included to show my love of working with other artists and that collaborations can create not only a richer project, but allow for me to be more adventurous with my designs. I would like to thank my dear friend Briana Kranz for her beautiful illustrations and for speaking the same language.

objective
Where do I even start with this one? It is my favorite project in the book, so it’s number one. This was my first attempt at illustration and it made me fall in love with it and have a new found respect for all illustrators. I love Patagonia’s “Live Simply” line and wish that they did more illustrations, so I decided to add a more kid and outdoor activity directed line within Live Simply.

objective
The company was up to me to choose, and I opted for Maersk shipping line because of having spent so many years living by the bay, I would constantly see the huge shipping barges with their cool, graphic logos on the containers coming in and out of the bay. It was definitely an abstract company, but since Maersk is a Danish company, I thought why not give it an Ikea feel and it would then allow for more innovation on how to light the lamp. Each of the ‘container’ lamps is individually lit by an LED light charged by an 8V battery that can be switched on and off individually as well. The containers are all linked together by an acrylic poll that allows them to spin freely on each other as well as come apart, which plays into the ‘Kompas’ idea, and how the shipping barges are constantly traveling in all four directions. Also, 54degree1 is a coordinate of the Maersk headquarters in Denmark. Finally, each container is made out of frosted acrylic plates with the grooves carved in.

objective
Tampax has looked the same for the past 30 years and I thought the brand could use a facelift, a sassy one to be exact. I wanted the new look to take the roll of the sophisticated yet endearing best girlfriend who thinks you are fabulous all of the time, keeping the vibe playful and sexy, just how every woman should feel.

There is nothing like the satisfaction of painting a room yourself, and Ace Hardware wants you to know that! These paint cans were designed with the idea of taking all of these modern day people and having them step back into the olden Americana times and slow down by doing things with their hands again, like painting that floral wallpaper bathroom...

2 Low-End Wines, 1 High End Wine
Tom McNulty
objective
Camelliaaaa, you’re breaking my heart! Ok, not really, but Camellia has a cellar and they make wine up in Healdsburg, California. It is a family run vineyard and inn, which is a cute, pink Baroque-style house with antique furniture and lots of floral, lots. I decided to give the wine an offbeat style by spray painting the two low end bottles a cream and having the “Camellia” silhouette stay clear and become a window into the bottle. I felt that this gave the wine an antique yet flirtatiously modern feel.

objective
To try and encapsulate the Coen Brothers in one print project could never do them proper justice, but I made an attempt to capture how I feel about them, which is nothing but admiration! This project was to design a film festival for a chosen director (research consisted of lots of movie watching) and to give it a theme. I felt that a common recurring theme in the Coen movies was the “Rise of the Underdog, and their many misadventures on their paths to whatever they seek.

objective
The infamous ‘Pack 4’ group project. This project taught me more in the one semester than my four years combined. Students are divided into teams of four to work in collaboration to create a house of brands and a branded house for Costco. Along with the redesign of Costco’s house brand, Kirkland and to create four private labels to be sold at Costco. solution
Our solution to the challenge was to immediately organize Kirkland’s wide range of products into graphicly organized subcategories: home, apparel, food, paper goods, cleaning, and bath. As for the private labels, we felt a food court was necessary, but wanted to make it as enjoyable as possible, therefore creating Ollie’s Baking Co. We also created 3 lines of products: a high end kitchen line called Counter 74, an eco-friendly kids line called NocNoc, and a line of power tools called Burley Knapp.

Michael Osborne
objective
We wanted the consumer to be able to see the product that they are buying, in each packaging system for the Kirkland line, the product is clearly visible. In instances where the entire product cannot be shown, the product is clearly photographed and enlarged and completely covers the outside of the package, allowing you to know immediately what is inside. page

objective
Ollie’s was our “Williams-Sonoma”-esque line, a line that is from one store, but has a different look and feel throughout the products. Ollie’s is the in-house Costco bakery and we felt that we could really just have fun with the different was of packaging basic products. The main aesthetic of all of the designs was to be somewhat rustic, yet refined as well as come in wholesale sizes.

objective
Everyone loves a little splash of color, especially orange. We wanted Counter 74 to appeal to the young, working professional who is starting to purchase all of those kitchen items, but doesn’t necessarily want to head to Martha Stewart. Counter 74 is bold, sleek, yet inviting. We believe in quality and style should go hand in hand, plus a little bit of fun.
