For me, design is more than just choosing fixtures and finishes for a concept, or making sure all clearances and codes are met. Design, for me, is my life. It’s what I breathe, talk, and feel. It’s my happy place. The interest, passion and love I have for design is what I commit to share with the world. Designers are masterful storytellers: their ideas can make us feel comfort, peace, excitement or playful. The ability to share my absolute love and passion to create spaces that will bring people together, inspire someone, or to create a space where a person can laugh, cry and love while being surrounded by the most beautiful of things. This portfolio tells a story. The story of my adventure down the path of turning my childhood dream into a reality. Every page is a lesson of discovery; a story of learning the fundamentals and the technical skills to bring a vision to life. The beginning of my adventure in the world of design, where I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty, acknowledge the detail and understand the complexity of creating a space. To take a journey in art is to follow a path that is never ending; there is always more to know, see and discover. The pages of this book will continue to grow; in experience, in personal growth and in the story of a childhood dream turned reality with endless adventures of discoveries and possibilities.

Quite often, I’ve been asked: why interior design? Questions as such get you thinking back to your youth, growing up and finding out what you are destined to do or to be. I think back to when I was a little girl and playing “house” in the creek behind my house of course wasn’t “house” without assigning different rooms in the trees, collecting moss for beds and mixing mud with water for the most delicious mud pie! I think back to my later childhood when I spent hours building the ultimate seven-story Barbie house with everything Barbie and Ken could ever imagine. I soon moved on to designing the ultimate “mouse house” on paper. Miniature furniture and kitchen designs that included a skittle dispenser and slides to connect the second floor to the first. Why interior design? Design has been a part of my life since I can remember. There is no denying that creating is part of my genetic makeup.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

The design of the exterior view of the house is an impactful modern design that foreshadows the design elements in the interior of the house. Urban sleek landscaping and a small contemporary style courtyard sets the tone for the design and leads clients through the modern front door and into the home. Encouraging movement, the layout of the home encases innovative architecture details to invoke exploration from one room to the next. Contemporary glass walls and windows in harmony with the warm wood tones of the flooring create a west coast ambiance present throughout the entire home. Clean modern lines are contrasted with warm tones and textures for a unique and eclectic design. Every design detail will have a purpose to ensure the client can functionally work and live within the home while appreciating all the small details present in the design.

ORCHID RETAIL SHOP

Orchid is located in the hub of the downtown core, Vancouver. On the corner of Robson and Burrard, Orchid, a two story concrete building with floor to ceiling glass windows surrounding the front of the store is a classy and sophisticated “love shop. Situated on one of the busiest streets in Vancouver, Orchid receives heavy foot traffic throughout the store, this taken into consideration the overall flow and adjacencies within the store played an integral part in the overall design. The design intent and goals for this project was to create a contemporary and sophisticated design by using materials, finishes, and fixtures with lustrous surfaces, posh fabrics, classy fixtures, and chic design details.

Keeping with the fresh colour scheme we emphasized the cooking area by outlining the kitchen floor in green as the cooking kitchen is “where all the magic happens. We ensured all cooking stations had appropriate clearances and sight line to the teacher for functionality while cooking. The clients requirements were met by incorporating food and cookware storage, stainless steel wall paneling and clearances for shipping and receiving products.

The colour scheme of the hotel is inspired by the concept of a coastal sunset. Warm hues of yellows, oranges and cognacs as seen in sunsets and the annual lantern festival will be married with soft hues of blue to mimic the crystal clear waters in the surrounding environment. A neutral colour palette of crisp whites and greys will be incorporated throughout the entire hotel to create a fluent atmosphere and connect the various spaces within the hotel together. Warm wood tones, textured tiles and linen fabrics add visual texture to each space while keeping within the overall theme of the hotel design concept.

ART INSTITUTE OF VANCOUVER

The design concept for the Art Institute of Vancouver expansion is fueled around the concept of bringing people together and creating an environment where students will feel inspired to create anything less than absolute greatness. In doing so, all areas of the school will be designed to cater to the educational needs of the student and will also have a authentic and strategically executed design. Sticking with the concept of “bringing people together,” the Art Institute of Vancouver expansion project, with it’s improved design that will encourage the creative minds of the cities upcoming young and talented designers to get the proper education in an inspiring and innovative design environment..

mission statement The Art Institute of Vancouver goal is to ensure every student who is enrolled into their respective programs will become a creative professional who has created a portfolio that showcases all the hard work they’ve put in through their schooling career. Instructors work hard to show students the importance of good communication skills, a goal-orientated mindset and strong team skills. In doing so, Instructors, majority being individuals who themselves are currently working in the industry, hope to prepare students for the work industry and real life working situations by creating a professional working environment.

ART INSTITUTE OF VANCOUVER

Primary design challenge was to create a learning environment that is not only functional but also one in which is an inspiring environment for students to learn. The following aspects of the design will need to be considered: -Culinary school is merging to the Burnaby campus. Increasing the number of students at the Burnaby location -Additions to the campus must be made and include an auditorium, restaurant, bakery, student lounges, yoga studio, outdoor patio and additional classrooms -More student lounge areas to encourage student interaction Design challenges include: -Entrance and receiving doors to remain at their current location -Lack of sufficient spaces to accommodate fashion shows, art shows, presentations and graduation events -Many classrooms are without natural light

of the school where students will come to learn, be inspired and will walk across the stage at the end of their program when all the sweat and hard-work has paid off. The “sky is the limit” design inspiration is incorporated into the overall design by graphic wall coverings, acoustic ceiling panels that mimic clouds, glass railings and panels, and a cool colour scheme to encourage students to relax and unwind while sitting in on lectures and performances. The space is two stories to utilize the tall ceiling height and to create more seating for auditorium users. The design objective for the auditorium was to create an environment where students are excited to go to and get their full attention to learn and continue to be infused by their area of study.

target market strategy We chose to target the Yummy Mummy segment as we believe that once we work together, they will be clients for life. They have more than one property to work on and they like to keep up with the latest design trends as well as their friends increasing the frequency of remodels. Their large circle of friends will increase our referrals and they are active in the design process. The Yummy Mummy lives a very busy lifestyle and we believe they can benefit from a great design while creating ongoing relationships with them. We will target the Yummy Mummy by participating in the activities that they are interested in and by being present in the media they see. We will join tennis clubs and yoga studios in our spare time. We will speak as experts at home shows and community events and write guests columns in newspapers and magazines that they read. We will participate in charity events and offer our design services as a prize to those who donate. We will be involved as much as we can in home shows and charity lottery home designs that Yummy Mummy’s visit. Using these strategies we will increase awareness, interest, and appeal from our target market. Once we have worked with individuals of this segment we will host parties in their newly designed homes for friends and family. These will be fun, catered events with trendy and fun elements like wine tastings and personal tours on the new design. Once we have secured the market by working for friends and family, we will work on referral basis only, increasing our prestige and fees. We will build loyal and honest relationships and lifelong partnerships with these clients by using the psychological analysis to get to know them so well they feel understood and taken care of. The customer service will be unparalleled and thoughtful. Our strategy is to exceed their expectations in order to ensure repeat business and referrals.
