I believe Coca Cola to be one of the strongest brand identities around. Not only can it be recognised by its unique instantly identifiable font, but also through it’s strong use of colour.
Definition: The ‘L’ and the ‘3’ have been combined to create a ligature which means ‘take cover from the rain’. This derives from the german number ‘drei’ which relates to the english ‘dry’.This ligature is pronounced as ‘dreil’: a command used to tell people to take cover.
I was amazed by a new that’s well worth exploring.
Signs, symbols and pictograms are such powerful forms of visual language that over time they have become engrained into our everyday lives.
Their simplicity removes any complications and reduces them down to a single message.
The symbols have become an art form in their own rights and are so strong that they obliterate the need for any writing.
Pictograms allow us to interpret messages clearly and at great speed.
We have now begun our third year as Graphic Design students at Manchester Metropolitan University. Now that I have finished second year I want to continue to produce successful ,well executed pieces of work but more so I want to experiment and create new, interesting project outcomes. I feel that in second year I was able to complete projects well and end the year with a grade that I was happy with but I now want more than that. I want to move forward with my ideas and outcomes and produce work on a much more creative and professional level. I want to end the year with a complete and exciting portfolio full of work that I have enjoyed producing. I feel that I need to further my horizons and experiment with projects even if I have to venture out of my comfort zones. I ended the second year with a first and I want to end my third year with a first.
My sole aspiration is to complete university with a first class degree, which will put me in good stead for future career aspirations. During the summer I had two work placements in the design industry and got a real taste for what it was all about. Even though there were tight deadlines and fussy clients I enjoyed the challenging environment and working as a team. I know that it is what I want to do and I will use third year to work hard and prove to myself and to the tutors that I am and will be a successful designer.
For my personal project, I set myself the challenge of creating an autobiography, documenting the past 22 years of my life, without using type. I knew that creating an information graphic autobiography would be challenging and this was one of the main reasons I chose to do it. I have a great love for information graphics and wanted to produce a piece of work that purely revolved around imagery.

For my last assessment I received 65% which although is good, it is not as high as I would have liked. This has given me the push I needed to try and work even harder to get the first that I really want to achieve. Like in the last project I worked on I want to use my time at University to try out new skills and techniques and gain any more skills that could be transferred into a design job. I want to choose a project that I can become truly passionate about and dedicate my self to it fully. Most of all I want to enjoy the project and create a successful and professional piece of work that will add to my portfolio. I want to get the most out of my final project to ensure that I have a strong portfolio when going out into the real world to look for a job.

I propose that this years degree show revolves around the words ‘Blast Off!’ We are all coming to the end of our time at university and so we will soon be embarking on a new adventure.I like the idea of this year ending with a bang, or an explosion of great ideas and projects. Lets get ready to take off!
