house restoration freelance project In the heart of the Road to Santiago de Compostela, and a few kilometres away from León, we find this little village , Hospital de Órbigo. With it’s regal Roman bridge, the town itself has been involved in history over its long history. The house to restore is located in the centre of the village, and it’s a very good example of the typical Castillian house. It’s façade is a cultural heritage of the area, and going inside we find a large courtyard, sheltered by thick adobe walls, and a nice corridor . The challenge was big, for we wanted to preserve the typology but also adding some elements to reinforce and update the house to the new comfort standards.

The road to Santiago de Compostela goes across Hospital de Órbigo, so the village is very lively whenever the pilgrims arrive here.

The façade of the building, built in the early 1900’s, is protected by the town planning, as it represents the architecture of the time.

The first inhabitants of the house lived in the adobe house, placed in the rear. Built in adobe walls and wooden floor and roof. Some years after, the family built the haystack and the corridor. Finally in 1921, the main house was built, attached to the corridor and haystack and facing the street, thus closing the whole complex. The last member of the family lived here until the early 2000’s. architecture portfolio

With the restoration of this house we materialize an intervention that enhances the values of traditional construction, respecting the great surrounding adobe walls, as well as original colours and traditional wooden structure.

rowing club final thesis This project consists of a building that will house the rowing club of the Sport Society of “As Xubias”, as well as facilities for the town nautical schools and a lifeguard stand for the nearby Oza’s beach. Due to the strong unevenness of the ground the plot detaches itself from the upper urban fabric, becoming more connected to the coastline, linked to the beach, the estuary and the rocks.

rocks

Reflection is focused in the cliff geometries, so the building belongs to the plot’s

identity by improving it and articulating the water border with the building itself.

path

Enjoy the environment through a continuous promenade that relates the plot and the slope

shelter

In contrast to the open relation with the water, the project searches for protection, creating a courtyard.

sea

The building and the sea are in continuous symbiosis, by this way the project recovers the communication with the surrounding area

perception

Prismatic shapes deep-rooted in the boulders, bathed by the sea and colonized with sea moss.

18

Three volumes come strongly from the ground in a subtle dialogue with the sea, and act as a boundary between the water and the land. Besides, they create an inhabited gap in between, separating the building from the embankment, and creating a walk-through space that will give meaning and continuity to the whole “As Xubias” promenade.

To face the design of the project structure, it was divided into two different systems. Part of the program is half-buried in the land, so many areas will be constructed with loadbearing walls with reinforced concrete on footings. As there are moderate spans, metal trusses will be used.

The design decisions that have been taken, both formal and functional, will shape an integrated project, which will provide identity to the place, fully related to the sea and in constant symbiosis.

This will make that users of the new rowing club, neighbours of As Xubias and occasional visitors can enjoy not only sports facilities, but a comprehensive urban intervention that will revitalize all maritime-urban context in which it is located.

elderly home a coruĂąa We find ourselves facing an abandoned plot in La CoruĂąa coastline. Herein we will insert this home for the elderly, which aims to regenerate the plot while boosting the connexion with the environment and fulfilling the function of social centre, inviting everyone in the neighbourhood to walk in.

Three main ideas are found in this project ; The search of the correct town planning through a proper integration of the project itself. Creating a cross-generational coexistence by means of mixing the functions in the plot. The arrangement of the plot through three open spaces, one of them private and related to the elderly centre, and the two others more related to the city. These interstices won’t be just static spaces; they will work as a walk path. The ground level is also released, opening the vision towards the sea. It creates an elevated platform devoted to neighbourhood communication. It will work as a gathering space where elderly people, their families and rehab patients will interact.

la artistica vigo The plot of “La Artística” shows up as one of the many blocks along Vigo’s coastline, filled up with industrial buildings. These areas of the city are totally closed to the urban activity, and contain both architectural heritage and abandoned warehouses. The purpose of opening the plot outwards was to introduce a programme able to generate activity related to a diversity of sources, commerce, living and cultural programmes. This will generate an assembly of facilities capable of completely transform La Artística.

la artĂstica This is the biggest building in the plot we are dealing with. For many years its four floors were filled with machines which manufactured products made out of tin.

Two of the pre-existent buildings, the Mechanic atelier and the Nº3 building, are preserved as a remembrance both of the industrial past and present of the city and at the same time they are excellent spaces to develop sociocultural activities. These activities will attract a diverse audience such as artists, employees, citizens or visitors Everyone can find their place into the fabulous “La Artistica”.

The new architecture inserted in “La Artística” aspires to heal the architectonic wounds resulting from opening the block to the surrounding street areas. At the same time this new constructions modulates the scale of the public space under a formal language, related with the industrial area where the plot is located.
