VISION It’s 2020 and we can say that Roebling’s 1867 section for the Brooklyn Bridge was quite ahead of his time! The proposal reduces automobile loads while enhancing passenger numbers across the structure, avoiding interferences between flows at different speeds. © 2020 GIORI & HERCHA

TEAM DESCRIPTION
ACCESS & SAFETY
“ Two colleagues who met during 2018 at their previous workplace in Budapest “
As an answer to road congestion and interferences we rethink the section, according to each user speed, in a gradient from left to right: An express public transport lane featuring elegant & clean electric panoramic buses equipped from Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn would allow more people to cross the bridge fast at peak hours without overloading the infrastructure.
Koralia Giori
The carpooling lane (HOV) for non-commercial vehicles carrying at least 2 people would be securely separated from the bike path. Passive infrared thermal sensors at the entrances will count passengers in each car, so the improper use of the HOV lane would result in automatically issued tolls for the structure maintenance.
Koralia’s life has been driven by design from a very young age. She studied architecture in Budapest. She has experience not only in designing several types of buildings, but in product design as well. She started to work at one of the market leader architectural companies in Hungary in parallel with her studies. Through her four years of work she had the chance to gain various knowledge in practical architecture. She started to work as a freelancer in Sweden after finishing her complementary design education. Furthermore Koralia established her leather bag brand a few years ago hence her connection to design is out of the box. Her designs were honored with silver and bronze design awards in Italy in 2019.
Above all, user experience across the promenade will be enhanced by custom made strategically placed kiosks, benches and planters that helps interaction between sellers and pedestrians.

INSPIRATION We can not ask this New York landmark to serve a purpose it was not designed for, we can only appreciate it for what it is capable of in its original character.
Laura Hercha Laura Hernández Chamorro is a young Spanish architect who started her studies at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and moved on in order to graduate from ETSAM-Polytechnic University of Madrid. She worked at one of the major architectural companies of Budapest as junior architect, and is a correspondent of Fundacion Arquia blog (Architects Chamber of Spain). As a freelance architectural designer she approaches tasks adding value to the problem solved both for clients and users, and is happy to collaborate with already stablished studios and private clients, in order to deliver specific solutions where quality timeless materials frame people’s memories.
Taking back mobility solutions that were discontinued just because of the “car fever” is the answer to the problem. Human centered mobility requires a collective effort of removing the stigma associated with people not driving cars that has been built up over the last 70 years, but it pays off. With segregated safe passages for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles we can maximize the infrastructure capacity by reducing congestion.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-hercha/
OVERVIEW
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT & SECURITY
We could preserve Brooklyn Bridge as a key mobility infrastructure, bringing back its original section, which coped efficiently with New York City flows before 1950. Segregating users in a gradient of different speeds while freeing up space at the promenade, for the safety and joy of pedestrians and cyclists, can be achieved with two extra trusses which would work as a safe barrier between motor vehicles and cyclists, while strengthening the bridge’s deck, enabling an express bus lane.
The proposal reduces car loads while enhancing sustainable mobility and minimizing interference between passengers. Safer streets, with a gradient of speeds adapted to human pace will generate the right atmosphere for interactions. The subway will always be the fastest way to go from A to B, but the street level has never been about that. Light colored pavement in natural shades on the bridge deck would reduce the Heat Island Effect for all users, stimulating the visual experience together with native xerofile vegetation - already used on the High Line - to create a yearround changing landscape with complementary shades that enrich the commute, at a low maintenance cost. The impact of the project goes beyond contributing to the reduction of sound and air pollution at a city scale level: it protects the legacy of the infrastructure and enhances citizens wellbeing by allowing safe exercise on a daily basis. This will have a positive effect on stress and depression levels, significantly reducing accidents and the chances of developing other health conditions.
HISTORY Roebling conceived the bridge as a collective transport hub, but its section was modified in 1950 reducing the vehicle options to cars. This model has been proven inefficient, with the bridge reaching the maximum load capacity of the structure while serving only half the passengers it used to.
Urban planning can reduce costs in healthcare, and enhance the performance of people’s daily tasks. Increases in citizens’ wellbeing can be accounted for in families and groups of friends who walk and cycle together enjoying the cityscape. A simple head nod, a recognizable face brings back the sense of community.
In the past, cycling up the promenade was a leisure activity for a privileged few; now most cyclists avoid this overcrowded route. This proposal balances ecological & safe commute options, contributing to the legacy of the structure while enhancing mobility by reinventing the former horse-drawn lane for the modern cyclist.
FEASIBILITY While the streets are empty we have the opportunity to implement plans to improve city life without interfering with daily commutes. When people slowly take back the streets they will find a space for all to enjoy in their own way over the East River, and beyond. If the concept is chosen to be developed further, we will need more data of the wire structure for a detailed static analysis in order to confirm that it is a matter of the deck and not of the max. capacity of the wires or pillars. It is worth saying that by switching two car lanes on each side of the bridge for a protected bike-highway and an express bus lane we significantly reduce the car loads while transporting more people without reinforcing the structure. So, if it is a matter of funds, the project can be accomplished in two steps until we can restore the deck to the original section: first segregating the flows with a physical barrier between cars and bicycles, and later on implementing the new truss system. PROPOSED SECTION (OPTIONAL)
External Consultant: Peter Gondar Bridge structural engineer with 7 years of experience in Budapest, who answered technical questions before starting to develop the final documentation of our proposal.

TATION
LIFE IN BACKNANG WEST 2050
CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM
Sustainable community built around the 15 min. WALK CITY concept. The technological habits implemented during the times of a global pandemic were meant to stay. Decreased commuting in favor of semipresential or remote work, led us to a more ECOLOGICAL use of resources and time. This work-life balance allowed many to leave the big city center, in favor of areas richer in GREEN SPACES where one can easily keep in contact with the family, SOCIALIZE and EXCERSISE.
The concept gives a second life to the existing infrastructure, by upgrading the thermal performance and facades of the buildings with TROMBE WALLS, which has not only economic advantages, but a positive impact on the sense of local identity amongst the community. Backnang West's industrial fabric will host the collaboration, retail and leisure activities of the upcoming centuries, serving as a base grid for the new development.
RESIDENCE
TIMBER + CONCRETE
Quality housing for students, young adults, families and elders became a priority: homes increased their floor areas in order to host separate spaces for HOME-OFFICE, integrating TERRACES and BALCONIES as a norm. The aging population will live close to their relatives with children, while higher education students and young adults would settle near COFFICE spaces, not necessarily moving out of town once they start their career.
An effective and ECOLOGICAL alternative to traditional reinforced concrete structures. This proposal is solved with REINFORCED CONCRETE vertical communication cores + substructures and MODULAR STRUCTURAL TIMBER that allows the rise of upper, residential stories at a fast & safe pace, with a much lower carbon footprint than reinforced concrete or steel structures.
EDUCATION & COFFICE
Waterproofing below the street level is solved with in-situ reinforced concrete substructures, which host the technical installations of the new buildings (heat recuperation pumps, water management...). At the ground floor we can find RETAIL and BIKE PARKING facilities, whose ceiling is the last reinforced concrete slab, serving as Fire Protection of the above timber structure.
In the upcoming "liquid world" people will seek a spot to work & learn outside their home-office because of the human factor. It won't be a company office or university building, but co-working spaces and shared libraries, decentralizing the knowledge and economic centers. The new synergie centers are equipped with bike parking & showers.
RETAIL & FOOD PRODUCTION S-Bahn
A premade online shopping list allows the basic durables to be home delivered. So you can greet the neighbors at the boutique downstairs, buying local fresh produce (e.g. microgreens) or specialty goods on the way to our daily tasks. Backnang West allows people to commute without hustle looking for a car parking spot, which actually encourages "window shopping", supporting the local business.
OUTDOORS & SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
N
Paths among trees allow the daily tasks to be done within walk, run and cycle distances. The TRANSPORTATION HUB provides an underground parking for residents and commuters, where everyone can shift to public electric bike/cargo or 24/7 bus service. Existing streets are lighted and paved as a shortcut walk & cycle route to the S-Bahn. Docks for kayak, canoes and stand-up paddle make them another healthy means of transportation among the Murr.
The Glulam frame (GLT glue laminated timber + CLT cross laminated timber) solution for RESIDENTIAL use is much lighter than traditional method and generates a much more comfortable environment to live in. In case of exposed structural timber, the areas will be equipped with automatic sprinklers systems and fire propagation stopping measures. All solutions will take care of fire transmission through the facade with noncombustible/ self-extinguishing materials or vertical partitions.
FACADES In case of unified lots to build the new development as a whole, facades are CAREFULLY DESIGNED featuring PLANTERS, BALCONIES & TERRACES. The proposal seeks a more heterogeneous look, alike the traditional organic urban fabric generated with smaller private developments.

Both houses follow the same concept and appear different as each users needs and taste. The process is much shorter. We already know each other and are familiar with the regulations and lot. The aim was to process permission and construction plan together.
