ABOUT ME I’m Laura, an active and diligent architect from Finland. I’m interested in making the future a better (or less worse) place for future humankind through new innovations, cooperation between fields of work and ecological designs. My design style can be charactarized as controlled chaos, deconstruction and ugly pretty. I have a passion of looking beyond the aesthetic qualities of the built environment and rather more at the substance and essence of our surroundings. I hope to make a difference in shifting the architectural discussion towards a sensible and achievable future.
PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS Podcast 2019 – Perspectives on Ecological Building A podcast series (in Finnish) where I act as the executive producer, interviewer and content creator. The purpose is to succinctly present different ways of how to incorporate sustainable building methods into projects through interviewing experts. It is aimed at building professionals but can also be listened to by a broader audience. During its three seasons, many topics have been discussed including natural building materials, circular economic practices in the built environment, biodiversity in urban spaces and future visions for building.
Thesis 2018 Circular Economy and Architecture - sustainable principles for future design A research oriented thesis that acts as an introduction to sustainable building design for planners and architects. The aim of this project was to bring awareness to the subject of sustainable design in a modern context and gather this information into one place. Many of the ideas presented are ones that have been around for as long as people have built buildings such as material scarcity, resource efficiency and reusing existing materials while reducing waste. Essentially it comes down to how to use these methods in the built environment for any change to happen.

Chinese culture is known for its respect for tradition as well as its innovations and grand scales. Shanghai functions as a melting pot for old and new, ancient and young, small and massive, east and west, wet and dry to name a few. To counterbalance the concrete jungle, an oasis of peace and slow living is missing. As a reminder from the past, a rural landscape in an urban environment would be reviving old traditions in a busy surrounding. Thus a platform of activities is created to slow down theRECYCLING everyday life into a peaceful garden of blank space that people bring to life.

Some functions that could be hosted in the park are urban farming, public gardens, workshop spaces, exhibition spaces, a small events center as well as outdoor sports and activities like tai chi and yoga. The abundance of plants and nature calm the mind and work as a therapeutic reminder that life and nature should work together. The surrounding vegetation is indigenous and suitable for the local climate. The city is industrial in its smoothness and lack of handiwork so the park acts as a fusion of surfaces and materials coming together and a man made human scale is all around.
NEW WINDOWS
The public urban park is a symbol of timeless nature and mindfulness mentality. It beautifully demonstrates the ever changing cycles of nature that are separate from the construct of time created by humans. Disconnecting helps to connect.
Inspired by rice terraces, the Urban Canyon consists of two green terraced structures made from concrete filled bamboo stems and light weight wooden floors. The structures are open and airy with transparent walls to let in light and unhindered views. Taking advantage of the nearby water, a sophisticated rain gathering system utilizes rainfall to the area and leads it down towards the river via a new canal as well as acts as a water tank for watering the urban farming plants.

Places that inspire to thrive are located around the village encouraging a novel productive living concept. Nature and livelihood are interwoven and the boundaries between each is slightly blurred. There are ample opportunities to be a guest or resident that is able to have a bountiful and lively time that feeds a mentality which is open and dynamic towards the future of living in a productive village.

PAINTING - art as a hobby /lifetime
From a young age, I have found myself at home with art. Drawing and painting have always captivated me. I enjoy playing music (piano, guitar and percussion) as e w ll as singing and lately also dancing has stolen some of my free time.
