STYLE YOURSELF GORGEOUS! With a successful recent appearance on Dragon’s Den securing a much coveted investment from the show’s entrepreneurs, Julie Cobb’s style coaching business has taken off in big way. She tells The Navan Magazine the story behind Style fish. If you have looked in your wardrobe recently and wondered what the hell you were thinking of when making some very questionable purchases consisting of things that not only have you never worn but that probably never even suited you in the first place, then maybe it’s time you summoned a little bit of inspiration in the form of Style Fish, a unique seven week girly course focusing on all aspects of style, that will give you the confidence to shop for clothes that will show off your true beauty and not leave you cutting up your credit cards! Julie Cobbe started her career in law but soon realised that she was more interested restyling the courtroom than representing the clients, and started a different career path completely! The style queen moved to London where she worked as a wedding coordinator with Virgin brides in London (yes Richard Branson’s baby), working on a number of high profile weddings including that of former All Saint Shazney Lewis, ran a hugely popular wedding website back on Irish soil and she can also take the credit of being a prominent organiser of Billion Dollar Brides, Ireland’s first ever Designer Wedding Dress Sample Sale. Having been exposed to the glamour and fashion of the bridal business Julie wanted to further explore her passion for fashion, and got out her cap and gown again and head back to the books, qualifying as an image consultant and style coach. Style Fish was born!
DRAGON’S DEN Earlier this year, Julie took a brave step and applied to get a chance to pitch to the fire breathing dragons on the RTE programme Dragon’s Den. With some initial criticism from a couple of the spiky business gurus, Julie ended up stealing the hearts of publisher Nora Casey and media tycoon, Gavin Duffy. Appearing on RTE’s Dragons’ Den in March, Julie faced the dragons, along with one of her Style Fish graduates, and convinced Casey and Duffy to invest €30,000 jointly for 40% of her company. Norah Casey said: “Julie has the passion and drive to push this brand forward and I feel I can add real value to her business through our women’s magazine portfolio and events.” Gavin Duffy said: “I can see Julie commanding the screens in the not too distant future advising the nation on their style sense.” Participating in a show like that is a risky move as if it backfires it could seriously damage your reputation,
luckily for Julie she impressed all round. “You don’t know what they are going to throw at you but I don’t think that I was asked any particularly sticky questions. It was a surreal experience. I was running on adrenaline but when I came out, I couldn’t walk down the stairs, I nearly fainted,” she said, adding, “I want to grow the business in Ireland and the UK and develop the online side of things. The dragon’s have access to people that can bring my business to the next level. Things have been moving very closely since the show and I have been working very closely with Norah on a new one day course called Style Safari in Dundrum Shopping Centre. “
THE COURSE Style Fish runs Ireland’s first dedicated Fashion School for women, covering all the most popular One-to-One Consultations (Your Body Shape, Your Colours, Make-up Lesson, Hair Styling, Personal Shopping) over seven weeks. “ It is a fun, Interactive and extremely practical Style Journey, developed to show you how to have confidence & fun with your clothes and make-up, how to develop your style & most importantly to save

you money on Individual Consultations and the wrong choices,” says Julie. The first couple of weeks the course focuses on body shape and colour which is fully personalised for each woman, and for the rest of the time at Style Fish you are building on this. “The third week we look at fashion trends and bring in a lot of clothes from the high street which the ladies can try on. I try to inspire them by encouraging them to put outfits together, think up ideas for mixing colour, accessorising and choosing colours that are right for them and their body shape. The package also includes a make-up lesson on how to change your look from day to evening and achieving a sexy smoky eye! You will of course need a fabulous new hair style to accompany your dashing new wardrobe and flawless skin, and will be treated to a lesson at a top hair salon where you will learn how to blow dry your unruly bangs and finally bust the elusive ghd curls!”
DON’T WORRY YOU WON’T HAVE TO STRIP! Julie says she has received many calls from women asking will they have to bare all in front of mirrors like they do in Trinny and Suzannah’s show, but Julie ensures us that all participants remain fully clothed! “It is a really informal class, better than anything else that is out there because we just don’t bring the women in to have a chat. Women that
come to the class are not bad with shape or colours but we all get stuck in a rut and go towards the same things when we are shopping and sometimes you feel you know what suits you but you are never quite sure,” Julie adds, “We aim to inspire confidence in your style, so you can look in your wardrobe and identify what is not right for you, how you can update the clothes you have.
HEN PARTIES If the whole L plate, feather boa, stripper thing isn’t your scene then consider Style Fish for your last hooray of single life! Julie is also available for private bookings and offers a three hour fun styling session where you can find out your style personality, and avail all be it on a more general scale of the wonderful exercise Julie hands out to having you looking the belle of the ball, or the wedding!

Everyone loves black, but it is a difficult colour to wear for most colouring unless you have very dark hair and eyes as it can be very harsh and draining on us. Be careful about the colour that you are putting up close to your face as it can change how you look dramatically. Start off and choose classic pieces like a black dress and a good pair of jeans that you can build on. A black dress can be worn during the day at work and you can really play it up with accessories and shoes for a night time look. We have had so much money for so long that are used to going out and buying clothes without really thinking
about what we need, resulting in a very mismatched and confused wardrobe. All items that you are spending money on, especially now, literally need to earn their keep in your wardrobe. Julie tells me that she gets such a buzz from seeing women really enjoying the class, seeing their confidence developing and getting to know each other as the weeks go on. “It is a real fun girly evening Class is built for every age group, shape and size. If you think that you need a little inspiration and direction to make the most of yourself then this might be for you.” It is that absolute belief and confidence in the difference Style Fish has made in women’s lives that helps you get past the fear of walking up those stairs for Dragon’s Den.” Julie guarantees you will walk away feeling excited about your Style, your Make-up, your wardrobe & yourself! Style Fish is passionate about helping women to feel confident about their style, to inspire creativity and to show women how they can have fun with style and to really understand what suits them – not just to be told but to actually really learn how to put it all together! It is a really exciting time now and the response since the show was aired has been more than I ever expected. “You may be wearing the same clothes in one week as was in week seven, but in week seven you will be walking with your shoulders back, smiling.” At just 28 years of age and in the midst of the worst recession ever to hit Ireland, Julie Cobbe has succeeded in building a credible and brand going forward with two dragons on board. HOW ANTI- GRAVITY YOGA IS TURNING FITNESS ON ITS HEAD! By Sally Harding Forget everything you have ever heard about fitness because a new mind blowing technique is taking Ireland by storm and you have never experienced anything like this in your life! Antigravity Yoga is a revolutionary regime designed to increase your overall health and physical agility using an anti gravity hammock. It was created by champion gymnast, acrobat and Broadway dancer Christopher Harrison and has become such a phenomenon in the states that people are queuing around the block to get into a class… literally! Christopher was a former champion tumbler gymnast who moved on to become a top dancer on Broadway where he merged his love for both dance and acrobatics and founded “Antigravity” an aerial arts Performance Troupe in NY who have choreographed dazzling stage routines for stars like Pink, Mariah Cary and 50 Cent. . As a professional acrobat, Christopher began to feel the wear and tear of many years of dedicated training and performing on his muscles and decided to travel to India to study yoga before returning to NY to put his new found knowledge into play.
GENESIS Back in the big apple Christopher’s aerial company had been working hard to constantly try and defy gravity, when he suddenly got a light bulb moment and realised it would be a whole lot easier if you could just hang from the air! “In 1993 I saw a circus that had a beautiful hanging fabric and I instantly said I have to have one of those. It looked amazing but we didn’t know exactly what to do with this piece of material so I had the idea to loop it.” AntiGravity was the first company to use the apparatus looped as a hammock and thus the AntiGravity yoga hammock was born. “Our performers found that working this apparatus gave them a great core and upper-body workout and after long flights we couldn’t wait to hang upside down in the hammock for relief. After a while we didn’t need our chiropractors anymore, says Christopher.”
ROAD TO IRELAND And now, the first time ever in Ireland, Antigravity Yoga classes are available
thanks to Laura Armada Buch and her innovative company Labfitness, in Drogheda. And when I paid a visit recently to Laura’s studios, she soon had me hanging from the rafters in one of these amazing hammocks. Laura Armada discovered this technique back in 2008 when she travelled to New York in search of new trends to add to the ever expanding Labfitness timetable, which offers the widest variety of formats in the country. After just one session, Laura knew she had found the next big thing and almost three years later... it has arrived in Ireland. Anti-Gravity creator Christopher has been so impressed with the Drogheda Company’s development of his brand that they have also been offered the master license for the UK, which means all instructors in both the UK and Ireland, will be trained by Labfitness. The technique is a cross between yoga, dance, gymnastics, Pilates and aerial arts. AntiGravity has created a complete workout that is certain to get you in shape while realigning you from the compression of gravity. “The main benefit is that is decompresses the spine. We sit all day and our hips and back get tight and when we run and walk we are also compressing. . This is the one thing you can do to decompress

your spine. You can perform advanced yoga Inversions without neck or back compression refreshing every system in your body,” says Christopher.
EXERCISE FOR BODY AND MIND The AntiGravity founder says it’s about working on the mind and spirit as well as the body. “At the beginning of class we bring everyone back to remember who they were before they were given a name or a ethnicity and at the end we remind ourselves that we are at one with the entire universe,” Christopher adds “the atoms and particles that make up our bodies are not that different from the atoms that make up the stars. Sometimes when you take your mind to that place you expand the reality of the world and the things that bug you on a day today basis don’t seem nearly as big.” Antigravity Yoga has exploded so much in the states that, at first, fitness studios did not know how to handle the demand. “ When they started this first in New York it was such a sensation that they had to change the entire way you sign in for a class because there were cat
fights in the lobby over who was going to get in,” laughs Christopher. The showbiz world can’t get enough of Christopher’s brainchild and he was asked to design an entrance for Jane Krakowski in the Broadway revival of NINE in which she emerged from the rafters in an Antigravity Hammock onto Antonio Banderas, a performance that won her a Tony Award. Never to be out done, Mariah Carey followed suit and immediately contacted AntiGravity insisting she had to have a hammock in her show! “For Mariah’s charm bracelet tour we took the hammock and made it into a giant M where she got in the middle and had butterfly wings, she thought it was fabulous,” says Christopher.
ANTI - GRAVITY YOGA AT THE GRAMMYS Most recently Pink stole the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards with an act on an AntiGravity Hammock. The act combined their Aerial Carousel with the Antigravity Hammock delivering an upside down pose called the chandelier!
The Americans have certainly taken Antigravity to their hearts, but how does Christopher think we’ll fair out in Ireland? “Really interestingly, the place where it has really seemed to take off is Ireland. The Irish are a very hardworking people especially the women, and to know that they are coming in to class to get time to rejuvenate is amazing. You are challenging yourself to do something new and different outside of your comfort zone and whenever we do that we grow.” “I visited Ireland last year and I found it to be not only beautiful but truly magical, not just because of the landscape but because of the people. The Irish are going to adore this.” Labfitness founder Laura added, “We are absolutely delighted at the way Anti – Gravity has been such a success here and we plan to open studios nationwide over the coming months. We are also thrilled to be opening our first studio in London in June! We have just finished an intense four day instructor training course where we had 12 instructors from all over Ireland and we are so excited at the prospect of potentially creating 60 jobs over the next couple of years.” To find a class in your area or to train as an instructor log on to www.antigravityyogaireland.com

TOP TEN SULTRY SUMMER MAKE UP TIPS We have the here top tips to ensure you’ll look your best no matter how hot it gets this summer With summer just around the corner you’ve probably been through your wardrobe and dusted down your summer clothes but what about your make-up bag? Now is the perfect time to give it a summer makeover.
1. ESSENTIAL PROTECTION
Protect your skin from damage this summer by using a moisturiser with an SPF factor of 15 or higher. Use it daily and you’ll help to combat those early signs of aging such as sun spots and fine lines. Remember that you’ll be exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays even on a cloudy day. Apply your SPF moisturiser to a clean face and allow 10 minutes for it to absorb before applying your foundation.
shades that have been specifically created to suit your skin tone.
4. THE EYES HAVE IT
Eye shadows in lighter, neutral shades are perfect for the summer. If it’s really hot and you don’t want to go to the effort of applying a full make-up, a touch of mascara and a little eye liner will ‘open’ up the eye and bring your face to life. For a lighter, more summery appearance, swap your black mascara for one that is either brown-black or brown. To complete your look remember to have your eyebrows professionally shaped.
5. ESSENTIAL WATERPROOFING
There is nothing worse than running mascara, so if you’re planning a beach holiday or going to a wedding, consider your choice of mascara with care. Waterproof mascara is great, but you’ll probably need an oil-based eye makeup remover to take it off properly so that you don’t get an unsightly build-up. If you don’t want the hassle, it’s worth getting your eyelashes professionally tinted. If you’re particularly fair and have very light eyebrows it’s worth getting them dyed too.
6. FRESH AIR
2. LIGHTEN UP
When the warm weather hits you might find that foundation and powder feels too heavy on your skin. For a fresher, lighter look switch to a tinted moisturiser, apply with a damp sponge and you’ll be sure to get an even look. A little concealer dabbed under the eye will give added radiance.
3. FAKE IT
On a lovely summer’s day there is nothing better than the appearance of a healthy glow to make you feel better, and one of the easiest ways of achieving this is with bronzing powder. If you’re worried that you’ll choose the wrong shade of bronzer and end up looking orange instead of sun-kissed, many skincare companies have a range of
7. HOLIDAY GLAM
Make the most of your newly-acquired tan by using a Glow highlighter on your cheekbones and brow. With its subtle pearlescent lustre it looks amazing on tanned skin and you can even use it in the daytime to help keep your holiday glow when you return to work. For a touch of instant evening glamour apply the Glow highlighter to your shoulders and decolletage.
Being out in the fresh air can take its toll on your skin and that includes your lips. If you’re sunbathing, it’s important to remember to use some lip balm to keep them soft and supple. When you’ve got a slight tan, a touch of lipstick or lip gloss is often all you need to face the world.
8. CHEEKY CHEEKS
If you don’t like using fake tans and bronzing powders, the easiest way to achieve a healthy natural glow is with blush. Whether your blush is an ultra-fine powder or a light cream, the rules are the same. Apply it along your cheekbones or the apples of your cheeks, depending on your face shape. Remember to build up the colour gradually until you get the soft natural glow that you’re looking for.
9. TIP-TOP TOES
You’ll want your feet to look their best if you’re wearing sandals or flip-flops this summer. Build time into your weekly beauty routine to pamper them. Remember to use a pumice or foot file to keep them free from dry skin and unsightly cracked heels and moisturise regularly to ensure that skin appears smooth and supple.
10. AND FINALLY...
If you are going to be spending large amounts of time in the sun, whether in the garden or on the beach, make sure you invest in a bottle of sun tan lotion, a floppy sun hat and a pair of sun glasses to help protect your skin from potential sun damage.

SUPER NEWS ON SUPER FOODS!
Summer is finally here and even though the weather hasn’t caught up with seasons we are all too conscious of not only shedding a few pounds but of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We are all so quick to hop on the bandwagon of new fad diets that promise to work miracles in just a week, but in reality the road to total health is not in a diet pill or any one magical food. There are foods, however, whose nutritional content is so powerful and the benefits of eating them so amazing, that they are often referred to as “super foods”. Here is an expert’s low down on what foods could change your life!
TOP 10 SUPER FOODS FOR FAMILIES! 1. Ready Brek
– best source of calcium for growing bones! 1 bowl of Ready Brek made with hot milk contains the same amount of calcium as 3 full glasses of milk!
2. Red meat
– packed with highly-absorbable ‘haem’ iron. Iron is required to make Haemoglobin, which helps carry oxygen around the body. Half of all toddlers living in Ireland eat insufficient iron on a daily basis. Lean steak mince is excellent value for money, packed with iron, and very versatile – so why not include it in the family dinner menu 2 or 3 times a week e.g. Bolognese, lasagne, shepherds pie, savoury mince, meat balls, homemade beef burgers or chill con carne! These dishes are very popular with kids so when cooking any of these dishes, cook in bulk & freeze a few extra portions for another day!
3. Fish – the ultimate Brain Food for kids!
Research shows that children who received adequate Omega 3 in the womb showed have advanced attention spans than children who did not receive enough Omega 3. Studies have shown that Omega 3 (found in oily fish) results in significant improvements in spelling & reading in younger children. Fact!
4. Bananas – loaded with
energy - especially for exercise or sport. They also keep you healthy from the inside out!
5. Fresh fruit juice – Packed full of vitamins & magic ingredients called ‘antioxidants’! Try to buy a high quality fruit juice which you will find in the chill cabinet in the supermarket. Watch out for the phrases ‘freshly squeezed’, ‘freshly pressed’, ‘not from concentrate’, & ‘no added sugar’ to find the least processed & most nutritious juice. A small serving with meals (100mls, or 4 oz.) is more than sufficient to boost iron absorption from a wide variety of foods. Try to discourage kids from drinking too much fruit juice as it can contribute to dental caries.
6. Tomatoes
are packed with a powerful antioxidant known as Lycopene. The food with the highest concentration of Lycopene is tomato purée, so try to remember to add it to as many dishes as possible when cooking at home!

- strawberries, blackberries, cranberries, raspberries, loganberries, gogi berries & blueberries! Packed full of antioxidants to help prevent illnesses when you are a grownup. Berries can be expensive, so buy in season and watch out for in-store special offers. Remember ‘a little goes a long way’ so a handful will do - add to breakfast cereals, porridge, milk puddings, yogurt & smoothies. Serve with a little ice-cream for a treat! to national nutrition research, almost all adults living in Ireland still consume potatoes regularly! We still love the humble spud!! Fish is a rich source of Omega 3, which is best described as a true Brain Food! Omega 3 “good fat” cannot be made by our bodies so we need to consume it. Rich sources include salmon, fresh tuna, herring & mackerel.
FACT – Omega 3 is essential for brain development, brain function, concentration, learning & mental health. Eat fish at least twice a week as part of the family diet. If you are not too keen on fish, include foods which are fortified with omega 3 e.g. Omega milk, omega light milk, omega spread, fish fingers with added omega-3.
About 75% of the brain is developed in the womb and the baby gets Omega 3 fats from the mother’s diet. DHA Omega 3 in FISH is essential for your baby’s developing eyes and brain. Try some fresh oily fish (salmon, mackerel, herring, trout & tuna) this week!

So enjoy the read and introduce them to your daily routine! Here are some simple tasty Dinner recipes:
Tasty Turkey Burgers GLUTEN FREE
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
A lower fat alternative to beef, these tasty turkey burgers with the added crunchiness of grated carrot and spring onion, can be enjoyed hot or cold as a main meal or just a quick bite. Makes 6. Notes: Delicious served between lightly toasted Juvela Gluten-Free Fibre Bread or a Gluten-Free Fibre Roll with a dollop of tomato ketchup. Cooking methods can dramatically increase the fat content of a meal, so grilling these burgers rather than frying them in oil is a much healthier option. Ingredients:
500g (20oz) pack turkey mince 4 spring onions, finely chopped 1 medium carrot, grated 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 1tbsp mixed herbs 1tbsp Juvela Gluten-Free fibre mix
Stuffed Green Peppers
Cut the bell peppers in half lenghtwise and remove cores, seeds and ribs. Rinse the peppers under water. Heat the veg broth to boiling. Place the bulgar wheat in a heatproof bowl, pour the broth over it and let is soak for 5 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375f Heat olive oil in saucepan, add onion, garlic, celery and parsley and cook. Mix in the bulgar wheat, beaten egg, salt and pepper. Spray the outsides of the peppers with cooking spray then place them in a baking dish and spoon the filling inside. Cover the peppers with foil and bake until cooked and almost soft about 1 hour 15 minutes. Spread the tomato sauce over the tops of the peppers and sprinkle the cheese until brown 3-4 minutes.
The benefits of strength training for women are so powerful! Strength training has been overlooked as a viable weight loss method for way too long. Women are beginning to realise just how important a proper strength training routine is for their overall health. Below are some of my favourite benefits that women will get from training with weights. 1) Increased Metabolic Rate - Here is one of the most important benefits of strength training for women. We always want to discover the secrets to weight loss… well here is the first secret! Strength training increases your metabolic rate by increasing the calories you burn on a daily basis. The more calories you burn, the more chance you have to drop body fat. 2) Increasing and Restoring Bone Density - Strength training prevents and fights osteoporosis. 3) Increased Lean Muscle Mass - Note: You will not get big and bulky by strength training! You simply do not have enough testosterone in your body. Yes, if you train for hours and hours and dedicate your life to becoming a bodybuilder you can bulk up. But simply lifting weights as part of a regular strength training routine will not cause women to bulk up. With that said, for every pound of lean muscle mass that you have, you burn 35-50 calories per day! 4) Injury Prevention - Strength training strengthens our muscles and tendons. The stronger we are the less chance of an injury. This is especially important, as we grow older. 5) Improved Balance - Especially important as we grow older. Strength training builds a strong foundation. Strengthening our legs and core section means an increase in overall balance and coordination. 6) Decreased Risk of Coronary Disease - Strength training can reduce your blood pressure. It can also decrease your cholesterol levels. These benefits of strength training for women alone are a great reason to begin your program today. 7) Feeling Better and Looking Better - I don’t think it is much of a secret that we all want to look great. We are all searching for ways to look young. Strength training is a vital part of a fitness routine.

PUT SOME STYLE IN YOUR STEP AT TRACEY’S DANCE BOUTIQUE! Local dancer opens Meath’s only dancewear store
Being involved in an activity like dance is a fantastic opportunity for kids, fostering confidence, teamwork and pride in a child, however, all of the necessary dance attire that has to be sourced can be bit of a headache for parents and dance instructors alike. Dance has rocketed in popularity in recent years and now thankfully, those in the business can purchase top of the range clothing locally, thanks to Tracey’s Dance Boutique at 40 Trimgate Street Navan. Tracey Carty was only too aware of the demand for good quality dancewear at affordable prices having started her own stage schools in Longford and Kinnegad and also being a professional dancer herself. “I know from the kids in my school and from a lot of people in Navan that they have to go to Dublin to buy dance wear as there is no other specialised dance shop in the area. The majority of dance schools require that you have the
appropriate clothing, for example, for ballet you need to have a leotard and the right shoes because it’s safer for dancers to have the correct footwear,” says Tracey, adding “ A lot of dancers buy goods online and that can sometimes be unreliable with dance shoes because some of them need to be a size bigger than your normal size or they might be a different fit to your normal shoe so you really need to be able to try them on.” As well as providing the appropriate clothing and footwear for dancers of all ages, Tracey hopes that her boutique will build a good relationship with local stage and dance schools. “We are trying to encourage all of the dance schools and teachers in Navan to call into us as we have a notice board up where they can advertise and put their flyers and they can also let us know exactly what they need for their class.”
all of the major theatres in Ireland and touring America with Tony Kenny and Dublin’s Traditional Cabaret. Her “Evolution” Stage Schools have also been very successful and Tracey hopes that this latest string to her bow will take off just the same.
No stranger to the stage herself, Tracey trained in the famous Billie Barry School and has been dancing professionally for a number of years performing in

“We have the full Pineapple clothing and footwear range which is currently the most popular dance brand. This range also includes clothing and footwear for the non dancer. We also stock Capezio, Bloch, Freed, Katz, So Danca, Goleen and many more. “I hope that Tracey’s Dance Boutique will be a great benefit to dancers in the area and that we develop a good rapport with dance schools. It is very much needed in the area and we are delighted to be open.”

ENERGY SECURITY IS A KEY NATIONAL STRATEGIC ISSUE – SEAI At an energy security conference this morning hosted by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), and opened by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Mr Pat Rabbitte TD, concerns were expressed on Ireland’s continued reliance on imported fossil fuels, particularly at a time when Ireland’s oil security has decreased due to imports from volatile markets outside of Europe. Statistics presented by SEAI this morning show that Ireland’s import dependence for energy remains at close to 90%, while the EU average remains at 55%. Our reliance on imported natural gas continues to increase, however our security of gas supply is improving thanks to additional liquefied natural gas capacity in the UK and the continued progress towards commercial production in Ireland from the Corrib Gas Field. Additionally, our increasing use of renewable energy has seen it now become Ireland’s main source of indigenous energy supply.
supply is emerging globally as a key concern. Nowhere is this issue more relevant than in Ireland where our reliance on oil accounts for over half of all energy consumption. Energy security is now a key strategic issue for Ireland.” Continuing, he said: “Global concerns in relation to energy security relate particularly to the risk of disruption related to oil, where prices are high, and demand is likely to considerably outstrip supply in the coming years. While this has potentially significant social and economic implications for Ireland, our large renewable energy resource, aligned with a greater immediate emphasis on energy efficiency across the board, represents a path out of our dependence that also offers opportunities for enterprise and export growth.”
Commenting Professor J Owen Lewis, CEO of SEAI said: “Security of energy
BETTER ENERGY WORKPLACES 2011 FOR BUSINESS AND PUBLIC SECTOR Under the Government’s Jobs Initiative, the ‘Better Energy – The National Upgrade Programme’ was launched by the Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources on 11th May 2011. This new programme aims to deliver a major increase in the pace, scale and depth of sustainable energy investments in upgrading existing buildings and facilities.
Within this programme, financial support is available through the Better Energy Workplaces scheme, for implementing a wide range of qualifying sustainable energy upgrading projects in the public, commercial, industrial and community sectors. Such projects may comprise individual or packaged measures aimed at achieving lasting savings in energy
usage for thermal, electrical or transport purposes. The main focus of the support will be on achieving delivery in 2011 of sustainable energy (mainly energy efficiency) investment projects of differing sizes and complexities.

HEATING UP HOME INSULATION MARKET The retrofit insulation sector is growing steadily, powered by the range of grants available through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the growing appreciation that improved home insulation offers a great return on investment. Cosihomes, a company to the forefront of this trend, was launched almost three years ago as a division of long-established and highly reputable firm Derchil. ‘‘We initially established Cosihomes as an external insulation company, but already it has evolved into a onestopshop for all retrofitting measures,’’ said Dermot Byrne, managing director of Cosihomes. ‘‘Cosihomes provides the complete range of services which are grantaided under the SEAI Home Energy Savings Scheme. Attic insulation is still very popular, [as are] cavity wall fill, boiler and heating control upgrades and, of course, internal and external wall insulation.’’ The company has a new showroom and offices based in Ashbourne, Co Meath ^ however, it employs a network of installers all over the country for a nationwide service.
Scheme was an SEAI initiative to upgrade the energy- efficiency of homes suffering from fuel poverty nationwide. ‘‘Thiswas avery rewarding scheme for us to work on. It opened our eyes to the living circumstances some people still endure, including houses without any heating system or any insulation. Given the last two tough winters, you can imagine how difficult life must have been in such households. After the work was completed, the change to clients’ quality of life was immense.’’ Apart from participation nin this national initiative, the vast majority of Cosihome’s work centres on carrying out insulation works that qualify for the SEAI homeowner grant scheme, on behalf of individual homeowners. ‘‘In general, enquiries are brisk and I believe that is due, not only to the popularity of the grant scheme itself, but also to Cosihomes’ growing reputation,’’ said Byrne.
‘‘Although the bulk of our work is carried out in the Dublin area, we have co pleted external insulation projects in Cork, Galway, Sligo, Waterford, Louth and everywhere inbetween,’’ said Byrne. Cosihomes has already earned a strong reputation for the quality and integrity of itswork.
‘‘Reputation is everything when it comes to external insulation. A standard threebedroom semi-detached house could cost €10,000-€12,000, less the €4,000 grant. With this kind of investment people are entitled to be extra careful. We find a lot of our work comes from customer referrals. ‘‘External Insulation totally changes how the fabric of a building works, and it is important that an installer understands this if they are to give you the best solution possible. This is why we are actively carrying out research with Trinity CollegeDublin to access its exact effects.’’
‘‘We were recently part of the largest deep retrofitting scheme undertaken in the country. The Warmer Homes
Cosihomes was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the External Insulated Renders Association (EIRA).
Each applicant to EIRA is vetted to ensure they deliver the right standard of works. In addition, Cosihomes was recently awarded the coveted ISO standard for Quality, Safety and Environmental achievements. This ISO accreditation underpins the company’s credentials and also offers re-assurance to customers. ‘‘We always advise people to seek three quotations. They must ensure that contractors are SEAI and NSAIregistered in order to qualify for grants. A full list of what to look out for can be found on the Energyquarter.ie website,’’ said Byrne. ‘‘Our dedication to delivering a quality project within a reasonable timeframe, which should be no more than two weeks, [sets us apart]. Also the range of finishes that our 15mm Mineral Parex Lanko breathable system offers means we can replicate any finish, smooth plaster, dry dash, wet dash, ashlar cuts brick slips, etc ^ and this is important from a planning perspective. ‘‘Finally, our ability to give people the opportunity to visit Ireland’s only dedicated external insulation showrooms means they can see our range of finishes firsthand. You wouldn’t buy a kitchen without visiting a showroom, so why treat the outside of your home any different?’’

PENNEYS SUMMER 2011 Penneys Summer 2011 collection dishes out an exciting heady kaleidoscopic mix of colour and bold excitement that is born out of creative experimentation and natural curiosity to travel. The summer collection features distinctive prints with silhouettes that are both functional and incredibly exotic. Daring, eclectic, passionate and playful; a sun kissed free spirited Summer collection unfolds. Colour is a constant; vivid fabrics and bright bold patterns are a staple for this independent travelling spirit. A joyful explosion of madcap mix of colour neon brights and tutti fruity colour mixes with full on colour blocking. The forthcoming hues of summer also embrace the sea and allow us to dive into the depths of summer at full swing. Expect warm teals and varying shades of turquoise and baby blue whilst white is worn throughout the summer season. Expect a unique style channeled by a feminine, eclectic, clashing, youthful edge. This season we find ourselves again mixing and matching for an inimitably stylish summer vibe. The 70’s still remains a key inspiration with
looks that cross from hippy boho to a more sophisticated inspired luxe safari style. It’s a strong season for print, with confident, unexpected pattern clashes confirming the optimist mood.
HEAT SEEKER Heat Seeker demands we recharge our batteries from the energetic sun. This collection goes where the sun goes. Obsessed with light and the effect it has on colour, everything is whitened by its force. There is purity in the palette of clean fresh white. Use white to represent a blank canvas on which to layer thisseasons earthy tones. Key items are minimalist separates, tunic dresses and romantic floating skirts, summer knits and silk blouses. Denim has taken its inspiration from western movies and traditional 1950’s cowgirls. Sand becomes the new khaki and is complimented by our pretty sun drenched shades. Looks are layered with different levels of the same shade, the movement is enhanced by trims such as fringing, which is synonymous with the 1970’s influences. Think tassels, drawstrings, chains, and antiques jewellery as details on garments all sashaying, long and flowing.
GLOBAL TRAVELLER Whilst Heat Seeker is constantly on the road, Global Traveller has done her travelling and along her ways has collected beautiful iconic wardrobe pieces which she treasures dearly. She now can afford the luxury of hand picking and choosing at random from her wardrobe to create a truly original and exotic look, where she can exhibit at her own leisure. This is a radiant and sunny palette consisting of burnt reds and tangerine oranges, and with a spicy seduction that brings together a forceful character. Think rich nut meg and cinnamon browns, punchy turmeric, spicy saffron and hot paprika worked together in a mismatched combination. Pants and skirts are loose and voluminous, and wrapped and folded at the hip to give shape but ultimately comfort. This girl then adorns her body with an accumulation of jewellery, and the tops off her look with a pair of high platform sandals. Altogether an energetic and graphic wardrobe drawing from mixed influences, which is simply folded or tied for an ease infused elegance.

GETTING EVEN WITH THE BANKS!
In 1995, Patrick Combs, a university student heavily in debt, lodged a fake cheque he received in mail as a joke. Five days later, to his astonishment, the cheque cleared and $95,000 became legally his. What followed was a David V’s Goliath-like real-life adventure of dramatic show downs with the bank, national legal experts begging to get involved and world- wide media attention resulting in events that would change his life forever. Sally Harding spoke to the man in question as his one man show, “Man 1, Bank 0 thrilled audiences around the country including a fantastic show at the Solstice Arts Centre recently. What would you do if you received a junk mail cheque in the post? Most of us don’t even bother opening such mail anymore but Patrick Combs, an American born motivational speaker explains that a playful stunt followed a story that Hollywood would struggle to concoct. Man 1, Bank 0’ explains the astonishing legal twists which ensued after the incident; and worldwide media coverage (including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Good Morning America and calls from Letterman & Leno). Man 1 Bank 0, his first solo show, has enjoyed smash hit, sold out runs OffBroadway in New York, at the Just For
Laughs Festival in Montreal, at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, at HBO’s Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, at the NZ Comedy Festival in Auckland, and at more than 200 theatres around the U.S.
Son, for $95,000 they will kill you!! “I got what I knew to be a fake cheque in the mail and I had gotten them before so I was feeling a bit silly that day and I really thought that depositing it would be funny to the bank. I never ever thought it would cash because it was so obviously fake. I thought that I made it clear that it was a joke but when I checked my account five days later, I could not believe that the money was there. It was so crazy for a fake cheque to cash but that was just the tip of the iceberg and the least crazy thing that happened!” Combs sent the bank into a tail spin as senior management digested the enormity of the mistake they had just made. A normal guy cashes a fake $100,000 cheque and gets away with it due to their negligence and a number of loopholes in the law. The cheque turned out to be accidently real due to a footnote change in the law a couple
of years previously. When “sample” is printed on an otherwise real cheque, it still qualifies as a genuine cheque. What were the chances! It seems Comb’s mother Patrick summed things up when upon hearing the details of his windfall said, Contrary to being someone that wanted to steal money from the bank, Patrick found the whole situation enthralling and fully expected the bank to call him up explaining the terrible mistake they had made and intended to hand the money back. The bank on the other hand was not feeling so amused “The bank was really being angry at me. At one point, I was actually considering calling the show angry bank,” laughs Patrick, adding, “What they should have done when they realised that they had cashed a ridiculous $95,000 cheque was called me and said, Mr Combs, we notice that you haven’t spent any of the money yet, we have made a terrible mistake could you come in and talk about it. I would have come in and discussed it and most likely given the funds back. Instead, they were yelling, screaming and threatening to send me to jail. I had been a customer for 12 years and even had a card saying that I was a valued client. I became aware very quickly that the banks have mercenaries working for them, men in black suits with no necks, even ex

I’ve been more afraid of doing. I was so afraid of doing this theatre show that I put it off for years,” he adds.
Might Club Might Club is Patrick’s brand new company evolving from his many years in helping people succeed. Might club is a supportive community that encourages creative mavericks to go the distance and achieve their dreams. Patrick says that the key to changing your life is taking the first step and not being a victim to fear. “Resistance is very real. The voice of resistance is going to say, yeah do something you love, but do if after your vacation. It is such a seductive and sneaky voice. The time to start your dream is always now. I know people have such a hard time starting a step because we all need support. navy seals and the first phone call I got regarding this situation wasn’t from a bank manager or a teller, it was from one of these guys trying to intimidate and threaten me. Patrick requested a letter be sent to him to at least confirm that this person contacting him was actually from the bank but to no avail as the bank was not willing to put any such thing in writing about they had messed up. His show is an amazing story of what subsequently happened with Combs acting as 12 hilarious different characters that he encountered during this incredible ordeal.
Inspirational Aside from the phenomenal success of his one man show, Combs dedicates his time coaching and motivating people to reach their potential through encouraging them to get out of the cocoon of comfort so many of us are happy to remain in. As a motivational speaker he has inspired more than one thousand audiences at universities and companies nationwide including Shell, Motorola, Visa, Stanford, Penn and NYU since 1992. His writings, posted on the internet, have been read by millions and designated as “What’s Cool” by Yahoo!
and many more. He is the author of three best-selling books and is also former TV personality for Paramount’s hit shows, Real TV and Hard Copy where he was the star of humorous hidden camera segments. Patrick is co-founder of two global companies, his latest called MIGHT, which helps creative mavericks and the foolhardy ones rock their dreams. And he has appeared on many national TV shows including Good Morning America, CNN, The View and The Late Show.
“Wake up, feel the resistance and do it anyway. I tell people that the most successful people on earth are taking more action than them. Wake up every morning and just do three small steps towards your dream. We will probably go months without taking a step towards our dream. I teach people that they have to learn that resistance is very natural when you want to do something you love. You have to go through it and the reward at the following end is your greatest life.
HBO named the show one of the funniest comedies they have seen when it was first staged in the U.S. September 2003 and Patrick found himself rubbing shoulders alongside the likes of Chris Rock, Jack Black, Diane Keaton, Larry David, Sarah Jessica Parker and many more after this great accolade.
Since Patrick is such an instrument of inspiration for others, I wondered what got him out of bed every day.
“There are so many people that have not chosen a job because they love it but because it’s practical or safe. They want to love their job but it takes courage to choose a job that you love because the more you love a job, the more it will make you afraid,” says Combs, “ That is resistance but the more you feel it, the more that you are pointing in the right direction. There is nothing I’ve ever enjoyed doing more in my life than going to a theatre and telling someone a funny story that makes them laugh but there has never been anything that
“My deepest motivation has always been that I feel that I was born to do something with my life and many times I don’t know what it is. I’m less afraid of failing and more afraid of not doing what I was born to do. I’m so afraid of having regrets in my life that I do what I fear anyway. Although Patrick has no known Irish roots, he says that the Emerald Isle has definitely captured his heart. “It is a land of story tellers and I’m honoured to be here. The show is taking me all over the world and I have performed over 200 shows. What happened in the end? Well I’m in Ireland!!”
