1 I NTRODUCTION

In need of a hygge? I think we all are after the last twelve months! As the new Fair Director for the Affordable Art Fair Battersea Spring I’m thrilled to welcome everyone to the year ahead with a Spring Collection themed around art and wellbeing. Hygge topped the interior design charts in 2016 as the Danish-inspired way of living, all about simple pleasures. From calming colour palettes to subjects that make you smile, this spring we are welcoming 115 galleries and over 1,000 artists to our usual spot in Battersea Park to help you find that perfect piece to turn your house into an irresistibly cozy, hygge home! The Spring Collection will see the welcome return of several familiar exhibitors alongside some exciting new additions. Lustre Contemporary showcase the talents of Canadian artists, and Galerie Duret and Otomys, both diverse international galleries, will be making their debut UK appearance with us. The return of Platform Projects provides a hand-picked selection of exciting talent, and offers the opportunity to interact with work that would not usually be seen at an art fair. This spring we welcome eight artists including returning Recent Graduate Jonathan Hillson, paperscape pioneer Lisa Traxler and Lumen Prize shortlisted duo Esther Rolinson and Sean Clark. Finally, if all the excitement of the fair gets a little too much then be sure to drop in on one of our workshops – hosted by the likes of Paint Jam London and City Lit. Take time out in a meditation session with a difference, or get hands on in a practical workshop and experience the long extoled virtues of art and wellbeing first hand. Mindful photography will even encourage busy snappers to take stock and appreciate the thousands of images they capture and share on social media day-to-day. Whether you are a first time visitor or an experienced art collector, you’re sure to find art to excite and inspire you – enjoy the fair! Sam Gare Fair Director, Battersea Spring

IN NEED OF A H YGGE? Second to Brexit, hygge was the word on everyone’s lips in 2016. If it passed you by, never fear, now is the time to catch up and kick back with this uniquely Danish concept. Fair Director Sam Gare is on hand to share her thoughts on how art can not only enrich your home but also your mood. How can art transform the home and your mood? In addition to the visual benefits of making a statement, tying a room together and adding vibrancy and personality to your space, for a lot of people art makes a house a home and leads us out of our dayto-day lives. Studies have also shown that experiencing and enjoying art helps to decrease our stress levels - with many of us juggling hectic schedules it can be a brilliant tool for creating a calming environment to help us switch off at home.

BAT TE RS E A S PRI NG 2 0 17

What’s the best way to achieve that feel good factor when purchasing the perfect piece? When choosing something that will have a positive impact on your home, it is important to consider how the piece makes you feel and whether or not it is something you will cherish in years to come. Different styles, materials and mediums can all stir up different emotions, and introducing works with natural elements is a great way to create a relaxing environment. Consider choosing sculptures which incorporate natural materials such as wood. Alternatively, handmade ceramics are a brilliant and quirky way to bring natural textures into the home. If you want something a little bolder, abstract prints or paintings in bright shades are perfect for adding energy to your room and mean you can get away with a more minimal look in your accessories.

7 I N NEED OF A H YG G E ?

1

Have you experienced the positive benefits of art? Personally, I have found that the types of art that have had the most positive impact on my home and wellbeing are the pieces that reflect my personal hopes and interests. Waking up every morning to a piece of work that conjures up a feeling of contentment calms both myself and my home and inevitably leaves me with a smile on my face, and that feel-good effect I am looking for! 1. Joanna Charlotte. Stormy Skies with Dove. Oil and gold leaf on canvas. 100 x 130cm. ÂŁ3,400. FOUR-WALLS.
