Public Safe Zone

The Project for this studio was a new learning centre complex as part of the University High School campus, Story street, Parkville. The brief included general learning areas, a renaissance centre and a sports department. My response, The Safe Zone acts as a central hub for the diverse Parkville community. Featuring a cinema, cafĂŠ, gym and plaza, all accessible to the public from Royal Parade, the

building emphasises the importance of community involvement in creating a successful schooling environment. Privacy and safety is also important in a school, hence careful planning has allowed for three distinct zones, public, semi-public and private. The private features include classrooms, computer labs, study spaces, a library and project rooms running over an inspiring three-story atrium space.

VANTAGE POINT

The brief for this studio was to create a structure using a grasshopper technique that inspired an interaction between human and animal that would not usually occur in day-to-day life. Our Design aims to create a codependence between human and owl in the Ceres Environmental Park. The primary function of the design is to create a vantage point for the southern boobook owl to hunt from within the park, where there is an abundance of food source,

such as mice and insects. These are often considered pests in the agricultural practice, so by introducing the owl into the park we are creating a relationship of mutual aid between human and owl. The organic shape of the design creates interesting interactions with the ground plane, creating walk ways, areas to climb and places to hide. Made from bamboo, the structure fits well with the natural philosophy of the Environmental Park.

The brief for this studio was to create a Boat house in the style of a master architect, situated on the south banks of the Yarra River. I took inspiration from the Tadao Ando, in particular his Church of Light in Osaka, Suntory Museum in Osaka and Poly Theatre in Shanghai. My design responds to the panoramic views of the city skyline by taking the form of a triangle opening up the view. Taking inspiration from Ando’s planning, the boat

house is separated into its three main functions, boat house, café and restaurant, which all take very strong geometric forms within the broader triangular geometry. A reoccurring theme in Ando’s work in the strong relationship between building, man and water. I’ve tried to recreate this in my design with a long axial path flanked by pools of water that lead from the back of the site, through the building and out to a public plaza that steps down to the river.

The brief for this studio was ‘a pavilion for secrets’ located on Herring Island in Melbourne’s Yarra River. My overarching idea for this project was buried treasure, as I stumbled upon a children’s pirate party when I was visiting site. I therefor wanted to make the experience of finding and moving through my pavilion similar to that of a treasure hunt, where little pieces of the puzzle are slowly revealed and the excitement of not knowing what’s at the end of the journey keeps you going. 01m

The pavilion in located at the end of a path that circles Herring island, therefor after exploring the island you will stumble across little pieces of the pavilion, like scattered pieces of treasure that lead you up a hill and underground into the pavilion. Once in the pavilion you are met with spectacular views of the river and platforms leading down to the water’s edge where you can rest after a long day of exploring.

SECTION MODEL AND AXONOMETRIC

This subject consisted of two major assignments an axonometric drawing and a sectional model. For both assignments I was assigned a section of a large building, and from the shop drawing and architectural, civil and structural drawing sets I had to create an axonometric drawing of my section that showed how it was constructed. This was done by peeling away materials in certain places to see what is underneath. Particular emphasis was placed on how building elements are joined together to create structural continuity. The second assignment was to build a model of the section using materials that represented the actual materials that the building was made from. Again the idea was to show how the building had been constructed by peeling away elements. AXONOMETRIC 1:100

SECTION 1 1:200

SECTION 4 1:200 For this subject we created a flip book that showed a building in section at 12 different stages of construction. To do this we had to understand the order of what happens on a building site all the way from the geotechnical report and the excavation of footings to the final touches like landscaping and light fittings. We then broke the list of things into 12 stages which, using a drawing set,

SECTION 8 1:200

we drew 12 sections showing the building in construction. The idea was at the end you could flip through the 12 stages and see the building from start to completion.
