implementation of a 6x6m raster going in depth [3m, 0m, -3m, -6m] creation of an inviting main street to facilitate the access of neighbours and visitors
formation of the residency and facility blocks following the 6x6m raster in three depth levels, creating as well courtyards to facilite the access of light and to create more intimate semi-public spaces
proposed distribution of uses
the design of the several blocks was made thinking about the logical combination of uses and connections between public, semi-public and private spaces. at the same time, the disposition of the buildings, courtyards, underpassages and bridges, do not only allow determinate uses to take place but the possible adaptation of the spaces to the needs and wishes of the users in time. the design of the different blocks was made also with the will of offering a high interior flexibilty through the use of a base module of 6x6m that combined with more modules can allow multiple functions to be installed, as well as the use of light materials such as pannels that permit the subdivision of the rooms to render the desired flexibility of use possible. 15

project details
this part of the plot is regarded as the central hub for the residents’ for socializing, gatherings and other outdoor activities and events. it also works as an orientation point, guiding the residents’ into different blocks. in this new central hub there are few elements planned, such as a big fountain with stairs where people can sit and relax or watch an event, there is also a small forest which can be used for rest and shadow on hot summer days and a covered area that can be used for diverse activities and workshops.
the public park is thought to compensate for the lack of suitable open public space in the neighbourhood and at the same providing different functions, such as a central “performance pit” for musicians, other performances or similar events, a skateboarding area and small sport facilities and playground for children. the cycle path also goes around the park and enters “magdeburgstraße”, part of which is also repaved with paving blocks to better unify the whole plot. this public park would also work as a hub between the residents of this complex and the neighbouring ones.
in its existing condition, running along the plot on “donaustadtstraße“ is a parking area divided by guardrails across its length from the neighbouring lanes. the opposite traffic lanes are separated by a fairly wide lawn of the same length, without any other apparent function. our idea was to connect this lawn to the pavement across the southern limits of the plot. converting it into a wide promenade accompanied by pockets of resting areas with different functions, which would also reach a newly designed public park on the southeast limits of the plot.
